‘A great two-day community event’ A preview of 2019’s Granville Days
A balloon artist will be one of the attractions at this year’s Granville Days.
BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — After a very wet, cool spring that delayed summer’s beginning, it can be hard to believe summer is already on the wane. But, one of the best parts of this time of year is the annual celebration of Granville Days. This year there are a variety of family friendly events scheduled throughout the village on Friday, Aug. 2, and Saturday, Aug. 3. “Granville Days is a great two-day community event, and there will be lots of free activities for kids on both Friday and Saturday. It’s going to be great fun for the whole family, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local charity,” Granville Village President Jared Baker said.

Friday, Aug. 2 Cruise Night is the signature event on Granville’s event calendar. From 5 to 8 p.m., there will be a wide variety of beautiful classic cars, trucks and motorcycles lining both sides of McCoy Street. Music will be provided by 3D Sound. There will also be many local food and drink vendors offering to quench your thirst and fill your belly. Children will enjoy the free petting zoo from 5 to 7 p.m., as well as the creations of a balloon artist. There’s a $5 entry fee per vehicle participating in the cruise, which will be held rain or shine. Proceeds will benefit the Putnam County Community Center. A “Presentation of the Flags” will be held at 6 p.m., and the Little Panteras will perform at 6:30 p.m. Following the cruise, there will be a street dance, with music from the Higgins Bros. Band.
Saturday, Aug. 3 Saturday’s fun gets off to an early start with the second annual Granville Days 5K Run/Walk. Early registration can be completed by visiting the village website at www. villageofgranville.org. Race-day registration will be from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. in Hopkins Park. The starting gun goes off at 8 a.m. The course will take participants through the village, and those streets will be closed to traffic during the race.

Continued from Page 2 It begins on East Main Street by Hopkins Park. Racers will head east to Elm Street and then south to Hopkins Street. The course then turns west to Shafer Street and then north back to Main Street. From there, the course runs west to Turner Street and then north into and through the Granville Cemetery. As entrants come out of the cemetery, they’ll turn west onto Hennepin Street, and then south onto Division Street. One block later, the course heads back onto Main Street, where the eastbound route will lead everyone to the McCoy Street finish line. At 9 a.m., everyone can start to register for the kickball games that will begin afterward.

The Granville Fire Department will sponsor water fights at 2 p.m., with registration starting an hour earlier at 1 p.m. From 3 to 5 p.m., there will be a utility vehicle display featuring the Pink Heals Sauk Valley Chapter fire truck. Cancer survivors can sign the truck, or loved ones can leave “in memory of ” tributes. From 4 to 8 p.m., children can enjoy a variety of inflatables. At dusk, there will be a “Movie in the Park,” with free popcorn provided by Axline Pharmacy. The 50/50 raffle drawing will take place at 8 p.m., and winners need not be present. Pastor is fanning the flames of faith
Pastor Deepak Holkar revitalizes Tonica church and now serves Hennepin church, too
Pastor Deepak Holkar is excited to be sharing his faith with the people of both Tonica and Hennepin. Members of the Tonica United Methodist Church have said his faith and enthusiasm for God have been contagious. Each Sunday he holds a service in each community.
BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — The man serving God has traveled far, but his journey of faith has revitalized the congregation of the Tonica United Methodist Church, and now he hopes to do the same for the people of the Hennepin United Methodist Church. Pastor Deepak Holkar was born in Jaysingpur, India, and both his father and grandfather worked with missionaries and cared for leprosy patients. His mother was a nurse, and after completing college, he followed her into the medical field with plans to become a doctor. After completing his training, he relocated to Illinois in 2010 to be with his family who had moved here more than a decade before. While preparing for his exams and volunteering at Advocate BroMenn Medical Centre in Normal, he came to the realization this was not his true calling in life. “I realized I did not have the spark inside me, the passion, for medicine. My mother has it, she’s retired, but she still has that interest, but I remember almost nothing of medi-

cine now,” Holkar said. Instead, he realized his true passion was leading him toward serving others and helping their faith in God grow. His mother wouldn’t have been surprised with this change, however. When Holkar was 3 years old, his mother had a vision of him as a pastor praying for people. He used to deny this vision, but he’s now com-
fortable with his destiny and is fully committed to religious service. He’s now a certified candidate with the United Methodist Church and is a second-year seminary student at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston. He was appointed as Tonica’s pastor in 2018, and the community has embraced him. Karen Steele, one of Tonica United
Methodist Church’s many dedicated volunteers, said their new pastor has revitalized the small church and that apathy has been replaced by energy. “His faith is contagious, you can feel it whenever you’re around him. His passion gets everyone going,” she said of Holkar.

• PASTOR Continued from Page 4 “I have been received with open hearts and arms; there is so much love here,” he said of his new home. Holkar said his faith is fed by the dedication and commitment he sees the volunteers give to their church.
“They put in so much time and effort, they do so much, and they are unpaid. Someone would only do this if they have a great love in their heart and that encourages me to help them however I can,” he said. “Every visitor to our church, whenever they have come, they have felt at peace. They may not be able to say what they’re feeling,
but they know there is something. That is the presence of God guiding them,” he said. Holkar is also now sharing his faith and passion with the people of Hennepin. In July, he began serving as pastor to the Hennepin United Methodist Church. Each Sunday, he holds an early morning service in Hennepin before traveling back to
Tonica for a late morning service. To welcome the people of Hennepin into the fold, there will be a combined service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11. That morning, the congregations of both churches will meet in the Tonica Park for a joint service followed by a potluck meal. Holkar said his challenge now is to stay focused and to not get distracted. He said the Tonica congregation has journeyed closer to God, but added there’s still a distance to go. But rather than being discouraged by the road ahead, Holkar advises his congregants to look back to see how far they’ve traveled and accomplished, and to be proud of their journey. He was asked what his hopes were for the people of both Tonica and Hennepin. He said that by the time he leaves this area, he’d like to see them full of faith and “on fire for God.” “God is the same everywhere,” Holkar said.

FRANCIS J. NIEWINSKI MARK — Francis J. Niewinski, 91, of Mark passed away Monday, July 22, 2019, in his home with his son and daughter by his side. Francis was born Feb. 15, 1928, in Peru to Chester and Genevieve (Narczewski) Niewinski. He married Rose Marie Ellena on July 18, 1953, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was a member of the Granville American Legion. He worked at Westclox in Peru and Mennie’s Machine Company. Survivors include one son, Frank (Julie) Niewinski of Mark; one daughter, Linda (Bernard Mertes) Beattie of Mark; five grandchildren, Stephen Beattie, Courtney Obermiller, Michael Beattie, Taylor Niewinski and Alex Niewinski; and eight

Putnam County Rotary hosts exchange student
GRANVILLE — Marta Pinelli of Italy arrived in Putnam County on June 17, greeted by host parents and PC Rotarians Jim and Lara Petersen and family. Marta and Justice Petersen are participants this year in Rotary’s Summer Youth Exchange Program, which pairs high school students to spend eight weeks together, half in each student’s home country hosted by that student’s family and local Rotary Club. Marta and Justice traveled together to Marta’s home village of Visano, in northern Italy, on July 16. The pair was on hand for Rotary’s annual banquet on June 20, and presented Marta’s program the following week to tell club members about her homeland, family, school and favorite activities in Italy. Visano is an agricultural community of about 2,000 population — allowing Marta to easily adjust to life in the Illinois Valley — but with many new experiences including the local cuisine, Fourth of July celebrations, and trips to Chicago and Springfield. Putnam County Rotary participates in both summer and full-year Rotary Youth Exchange programs. This fall, the club will host a full-year Rotary Exchange Student from Colombia, and will take applications this fall for selection of high school students wishing to travel to another country next summer 2020 or for the entire 2020-21 school year. a Historic Vote — Suffrage in Illinois” program will be presented. Prior to 1920, women were denied the vote in the majority of elections in the United States. The struggle for enfranchisement began with the birth of our nation and was strategized differently in local, state, and federal elections. Despite what people today believe to be a straightforward goal, the path to suffrage was infused with sexism and racism. It triggered a fear of feminism and the roots are still seen today. While wealthy women advocates played a vital role in the movement, they weren’t the only ones seeking enfranchisement. From attorney Ellen Martin, the first woman to vote in Illinois, to Ida B. Wells, a woman who did not let racism stop her voice, women’s suffrage has been a battle hard fought by a diverse group of activists. • At 10:30 a.m. every Friday, there will be a story time for children 2 to 5 years old. Training will be held one day a week over the course of 10 weeks, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., from Sept. 3 to Nov. 5. Classroom time will be held in the Starved Rock State Park Visitor Center. Field trips for hands-on training will include Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, Dayton Bluffs, Nachusa Grasslands, and Dixon Waterfowl Refuge. Volunteers completing the training sessions will then work on Extension-approved environmental stewardship and educational outreach projects with other Master Naturalists and local partners. To maintain their Master Naturalist certification, volunteers must complete 10 hours of continuing education, and 30 hours of approved service work in the local area annually. The U of I Extension provides ongoing training and coordinates regular meetings to support Master Naturalist volunteers.

State Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, has been appointed to serve on the House Veterans Advisory Council, which looks at programs and studies conducted in the U.S. on various issues that affect the lives of veterans. “Being asked to serve on this council and contribute to helping all the veterans in this state is a great honor,” Yednock said in a press statement. “There are
a number of veterans in my district, including those at the LaSalle Veterans Home, whom I hope to be able to help.” The Illinois Veterans Advisory Council is a bipartisan group of elected officials and veterans that meets quarterly to discuss the concerns of veterans across the state and to advise the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs on significant issues. Yednock will serve on the council without pay or reimbursement.

Boat races yield a number of champions BY TOMMY ROSE news@putnamcountyrecord.com DEPUE — Racing began the afternoon of July 26 at Lake DePue to begin the 35th anniversary of the PRO National Championship Boat Races. Calling the action from the lakeside, as he has for all 35 years, is Ray Rodda, a former racer himself. Rodda currently resides in Carmel, Ind., but is eager to return every year. “I always look forward to coming back,” Rodda said. “I grew up in DePue, moved (to) here when I was a kid, so it’s always a homecoming to me.” The conditions were war m, overcast and calm when racing started at high noon, but the sunshine and wind increased a bit as the afternoon wore on, causing racers to ease into the first turn off the front straightaway, which saw a few spills in the day. In the C Racing Hydro class, defending national champ Devin Huff of Michigan won the first heat, but Kyle Deptula of Springboro, Ohio, won the second, and Jack Campbell of Indiana captured the checkered flag in the third. Deptula placed third in the first heat and was second in the third, his points combining to become the first title winner of the day. Bradley Dygert of Bristol, Ind., defended his title in the 125cc Runabout, while Ralph Cook of Utica, Miss., won the 850 Modified Runabout. “The 850 Mod was a new class we’ve
invited this year,” Rodda said. “They always put on a good show.” The K-PRO Hydro class, which features drivers ranging in age from 9 to 17, saw its championship won by Cooper Thompson of Fort Pierce, Fla. Thompson also received the “honor” of being tossed in the water to commemorate his first title at Lake DePue. Rodda commented on the performance expected from the machines when racers make their journey around the threequarter-mile course. “The big 700 Runabouts go up to 100 mph, and the RPMs can be as high as 14,000-15,000,” he said. “Spread your thumb and little finger as far as you can, and that’s how wide the propellers are, so they get a run out of them. They are haulin’.” Family celebrations were in order as Tara Cook joined her father, Ralph, in the championship ranks, handily winning the OSY-400 title, though her ride got rougher as mid-afternoon approached and the breeze picked up. “The first one was the smoothest, but none of them were really hard,” Cook said. “I love it (here), it’s my favorite race course.” Cook, like Thompson, also got a toss into the lake to mark her first title at Lake DePue, but her day was not done yet, still set to compete in the 350 Hydro Modified. The 35th anniversary PRO National Championship Boat Races were sponsored by the DePue Men’s Club.

SUE AND WES DIXON WATERFOWL REFUGE
Art stolen from wetlands refuge; thieves strike for second time HENNEPIN — A bronze sculpture of mallard ducks that stood atop the entrance to the Sue and Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, just south of Hennepin, was stolen by thieves sometime between July 17 and 18. “The ornamental sculptures are valuable works of art that were specially made for (The Wedlands Initiative) in honor of the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge’s dedication in 2005,” Paul Botts, TWI’s president and executive director, said in a news release. “The 3,000-acre refuge is private property that The Wetlands Initiative makes
available to the public 365 days a year for hiking, bird watching, nature viewing, photography and more. We are saddened and concerned that this artwork welcoming visitors to the refuge has been taken,” Botts said. The statue was one of a matching pair that adorned the gateway to the refuge created, owned and managed by The Wetlands Initiative. The other duck statue was stolen in the spring of 2017 and has not been recovered. Anyone with information regarding these thefts should contact the Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office.
