‘We’re not going anywhere’ Mid American Growers refutes rumor they’re out of the hemp business

kshute@shawmedia.com GRANVILLE – Mid American Growers isn’t going anywhere and they certainly aren’t stopping hemp production at the Granville facility.

President and Chief Operating Officer Anne Hyde said in response to an anonymous letter sent to Shaw Media that Mid American Growers would no longer be a hemp growing facility, that the claim is absolutely and categorically false.

“Mid-American Growers will con-

tinue to maintain focus on our hemp-derived CBD products in 2022 and beyond,” Hyde said. “We are excited about the launch of our new Mid-American CBD line this year and will expand selection moving forward.”

In addition, she said, multiple partners have engaged Mid American to cultivate non-cannabis crops inside its greenhouses.

“Our facility is very appealing to these partners as it facilitates issues with weather-related conditions on the west coast and provides them an optimal logistical market hub,” she said. “ “By adding these new opportunities, we are optimizing the correct amount of space for each specific crop, providing potential for additional jobs in the local community while strengthening our financial position. We will also continue to offer our cultivation program with the IVCC and look for-

ward to continued investment in the local community.”

The course at IVCC, which began last year is called “Introduction to Cannabis Production.” The two-semester program teach students about the production of industrial hemp, but students will also learn about cannabis for recreational and medicinal use.

The IVCC partnership will include internships that will provide instruction from Mid-American Growers cannabis experts on how to handle, study and grow live cannabis plants. According to Mid American Growers, this partnership is beneficial for their operations as well as students because it will strengthen its work force and allow for more production.

The operation already has more than 3.6 million square feet of greenhouse factories on at least 231 acres. It currently operates the largest hemp production factory in the world.

ImAGination Acres provides fair fun with kids activities

khieronymus@bcrnews.com HENRY - ImAGination Acres was busy with kids finding plenty of activities to participate in throughout the Marshall-Putnam County Fair.

During the day, you could see children running through the obstacle course and meeting lots of new friends at the fair. In the afternoons of Thursday, Friday and Saturday, M-P Ag in the Classroom and M-P Farm Bureau had plenty different activities that kids could make and take these fun project home.

On Thursday afternoon, there was silhouette painting with watercolors and seed mosaics where kids could decorate a key chain, necklace, or magnet. They could also create their own slime and take it home.

On Friday afternoon, the kids could join in bubble making, tie-dye socks, and terrariums.

Saturday afternoon, there was a scavenger hunt all over the fairgrounds to find clues and a fun prize given at the end. We also offered string art and a build your own insect kit. All these activities allowed kids to be creative, meet new people and have fun while at the fair.

SPRING VALLEY

SPRING VALLEY — On Tuesday, Aug. 3, neighborhoods throughout Spring Valley are invited to join forces with thousands of other cities nationwide for National Night Out (NNO) – a community crime and safety event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.

Project Success of Eastern Bureau County and the Spring Valley Police Department, under the direction of Chief Adam Curran, and his officers have teamed together to host this citywide public safety initiative.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to come together and to send a strong message that crime will not be tolerated in our communities,” said Officer Josh Pellegrini and Sgt. Sarah Kinkin, event organizers.

Spring Valley Supermarket, Happy’s, Mautino Distributing, Hall Township Supervisor Marty Fiocchi and WalMart Distribution #6092 are also partnering in the venture by providing food and drinks and raffle items — demonstrating their support of an evening which promotes civic awareness and strengthens partnerships between neighborhoods and local law enforcement.

National Night Out will be held at Kirby Park from 5 to 8 pm. Residents can enjoy free swim from 5 to 6 p.m. at Edward P. Coveny Swimming Pool.

At 5:30 p.m., hot dogs, chips, a sweet treat and water will be served to those

in attendance by volunteers of Project Success’ Hall Township Food Pantry.

The Spring Valley police will offer a variety of activities. A Life-Flight helicopter will land on the baseball diamond of Kirby Park (weather permit-

ting) and share the field with a K9 team demonstration. There will be information available on theft prevention, child ID’s, child safety seat check and a variety of other related topics.

Children will enjoy games with prizes, a bounce house and a Big Wheels race about 6 p.m., conducted

by Jesi Dergance of Life Balance in LaSalle.

Throughout the event, participants can take a chance to win from a large assortment of raffle items, including two car seats, bicycles, a PlayStation, a Nintendo Switch and a Hoverboard.

Actively participating in NNO will be St. Margaret’s Health, Spring Valley Super Market, Arukah Institute of Healing, 10/33 Ambulance, Spring Valley Fire Department, AT&T, Jason Schweickert’s K9 Search and Rescue, Freedom House, CPASA and the Illinois State Police.

NNO 2021 will serve as a reminder to parents and children to help keep them aware and involved in safety in order to help protect our children.

Nationwide, residents are asked to display their support of the event by leaving porch lights glowing on Tuesday evening.

Chief Senachwine Chapter, NSDAR is pleased to celebrate the passing of the 25h Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on July 6, 1965.

It reads, in part, “In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.”

Passed by Congress 56 years ago, the 25th Amendment resolved some of the continuing issues about the office of the president, especially what happens upon the death, removal or resignation of the president. Also, it solidified the protocol for removing the president if he or she became disabled to such a degree that the person cannot fulfill responsibilities of the office.

Since the founding of our county, the vice president has assumed the presidential office upon the death of a presi-

dent. However, whether the vice president would become acting president when the president became unable to carry on - and whether the president could resume the office upon recovering his or her ability - were two questions that had divided scholars and experts.

Also, seven vice presidents died in office and one resigned, leaving periods of time when there has been no vice president.

But the seemingly most insoluble problem was that of presidential inability. President Garfield lay in a coma for 80 days before succumbing to the effects of an assassin’s bullet. President Wilson an invalid for the last 18 months of his term as the result of a stroke.

Before the passing of the 25th amendment, there were still unanswered

questions: Who had the authority to determine the existence of an inability?

How would succession be handled if the president sought to continue? Would the vice president be considered an acting president or president to end of term? And would happen if the President recovered?

Congress finally sought to address these issues when it proposed the 25th Amendment in the aftermath of President Kennedy’s assassination.

The 25th Amendment addresses vacancies for the office of vice president in addition to that of the president.

The first use of the 25th Amendment occurred in 1973 when President Richard Nixon nominated Congressman Gerald Ford to fill the vacancy left by Vice President Spiro Agnew’s resignation.

In less than a year, the 25th Amendment was used again -- this time when Vice President Ford became president after Richard Nixon resigned. Ford then nominated Nelson Rockefeller to fill the vice presidential vacancy.

SPRINGFIELD – Livestock and poultry producers who suffered losses during the pandemic due to insufficient access to processing can apply for assistance for those losses and the cost of depopulation and disposal of the animals.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Vilsack announced the Pandemic Livestock Indemnity Program (PLIP) in remarks at the National Pork Industry Conference in Wisconsin Dells, Wisc. The announcement is part of USDA’s Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative. Livestock and poultry producers can apply for assistance through USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) July 20 through Sept. 17, 2021.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, authorized payments to producers for losses of livestock or poultry depopulated from March 1, 2020 through Dec. 26, 2020, due to insufficient processing access as a result of the pandemic. PLIP payments will be based on 80% of the fair market value of the livestock and poultry and for the cost of depopulation and disposal of the animal. Eligible livestock and poultry include swine, chickens and turkeys, but pork producers are expected to be the primary recipients of the assistance.

“It is important that people with disabilities get the COVID-19 vaccine,” according to the CDC. “Everyone 12 years of age and older is now eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccination.”

Vaccination is safe and will allow for a return to the normal activities people engaged in before the pandemic, organizers said. An IDHS report from June shows 43% of adults in La Salle County, 47% of adults in Putnam, Marshall, and Stark counties and 44% of adults in Bureau County are fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

According to Yale Medicine, vaccination may be especially important with the new Delta variant, which could spread quickly in areas with low vaccination rates, organizers said.

IVCIL’s priority is to ensure people with disabilities in the its service area have an accessible location to receive the vaccine.

ILLINOIS VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE OGLESBY – Illinois Valley Community College has openings in its Emergency Medical Services courses this fall beginning Wednesday, Aug. 18.

The Emergency Medical Responder course provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to provide immediate emergency medical care for life-threatening conditions until the arrival of other emergency medical services.

Police, firemen, industry, public service individuals and others who may be present at the scene of any medical condition will benefit from this course. Upon completion, students will meet the requirements for formal recognition by the State as a First Responder.

EMT Basic prepares students for the roles and responsibilities of the Emergency Medical Technician. Hands-on training in emergency medical care and equipment is provided. Students must be 18 years of age. Upon completion of the class with a final grade of 76 percent or above, students are eli-

gible to take the National Registry Certification Exam.

Paramedic I covers advanced emergency care of the sick or injured person following the National Department of Transportation Guidelines and is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Areas of instruction includes Introduction to Paramedicine, pathophysiology, medication administration, advanced airway management, patient assessment, obstetrical and cardiac emergencies.

Students must be an EMT or Intermediate, Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider and have a high school diploma or GED. Concurrent enrollment in Paramedic Practicum I is required.

OGLESBY - Illinois Valley Community College was recognized for hosting numerous vaccination clinics over the first half of 2021.

A plaque from the La Salle County Health Department, praised the college for its “extended contributions through the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of IVCC’s facilities, staff time, and their coordinated planning were instrumental in (our department’s) vaccination efforts,” the plaque read.

Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Bonnie Campbell, who oversaw the clinics for

IVCC, said 23,579 shots, including first and second doses, were administered at the college between January and June.

At Thursday’s board meeting, IVCC President Jerry Corcoran lauded Health Department director Julie Kerestes and her co-workers.

“They have been magnificent as we’ve worked through unforeseen challenges related to the pandemic. When I learned of La Salle County’s gesture, I thought to myself, ‘My god, it ought to be the other way around, we should be giving them a plaque.’ ”

At 6:07 a.m. one weekday morning, former legendary Hall athlete, state champion and Class of 2020 NewsTribune Sports Hall of Fame inductee D.J. Glynn reached out with a question.

“Are we ever going to have the Hall of Fame banquet?”

His question could not have been more timely or challenging to answer.

It’s the question we’ve asked ourselves for months and something we wrestled with since the start of the pandemic. With the virus running rampant and with size limits on gatherings in place since March 2020, our June 2020 in-person induction banquet had to take a back seat as real life took over.

We sat and watched, patiently waiting and wondering what would happen with our beloved event.

We didn’t want to cancel the Hall of Fame, an event so successful the first year in 2019 that afterward we had people reaching out to us with nominees, information and excitement. But we also didn’t want to wait forever to host our second induction banquet.

Now, however, with life starting to return to normal, I am finally able to answer D.J.’s question: There will be a banquet on Sept. 23.

Nearly 19 months after I first contacted D.J. and all the Class of 2020 inductees, we are able and planning to honor those who have made such an incredible impact on our area sports scene with an in-person induction banquet.

While the final details still are being hashed out, we will hold our event the evening of Sept. 23 at the Illinois Valley Super Bowl in Peru.

We are planning to allow fans and spectators at the event, but we will have limited seating, given the virus has still not completely subsided.

Our Class of 2020 has been renamed the Class of 2020/21, and

It is our intention to select our Class of 2022 honorees later this fall, return our in-person induction banquet to June 2022 and continue our banquet every June going forward.

The excitement thus far has been great, as our inductees are excited to celebrate with us, and some are excited to reconnect with names they’ve known from years gone by.

We will have our Hall of Fame reintroduction announcements starting the week of July 26 in the newspaper and on social media.

Legendary former WLPO and IHSA sports broadcaster Lanny Slevin will return this year to emcee our event.

cellerbrock@shawmedia.com PERU – It would have been reasonable to assume that the District 20 Minor League softball tournament’s winnertake-all championship game on Thursday, July 22 would have been another nail-biter, much like the semifinal on Wednesday had been.

After all, the same two pitchers Bi-County’s Hannah Heiberger and Oglesby’s Brooklyn Pelka – that had combined to allow just six hits with 25 strikeouts in a one-run B-C win were slated to go again for all the marbles.

One could assume that, but one would only be half right.

Heiberger was on fire again, following up her 17-strikeout, one-hit performance the day before by surrendering only two hits – bunt singles by Eliana

Opsal in the first inning and by Cara Kilmartin in the second – while fanning 10 over five innings to shut down Oglesby’s new bunt-oriented strategy.

However, the Oglesby half of the pitching thriller never fully materialized after the first three innings as the better portion of nine walks issued on the night led to a decisive eight-run fourth inning for B-C. It parlayed that rally into a shortened 11-1 victory and the D-20 title at Sunset Park.

Heiberger, who walked just two in the circle, also had two of the winners’ six hits and scored four runs, including the only two she needed as a pitcher on hits by clean-up hitter Kennedy Holocker in the first and third innings.

Heiberger’s double and an RBI hit by McKay Gensini with no outs in the last of the fifth created the 10-run rule ending.

“We just want to keep playing and tonight, our girls came in ready to play and ready to hit, and maybe more important, not at all scared to lose,” B-C coach Jessica Lenkaitis said of the allor-nothing win, which sends Bi-County into the state tournament at Beard-

stown on Saturday against a foe yet to be named. “Hannah did really well again tonight. She knows the defense is there for her and is ready to field for her, and that’s important. And she knows the hitters will come through for her like they did tonight. She has confidence in them and they have confidence in her.

“And we have all the confidence in Kennedy at the plate. She goes up there every time thinking she’s going to hit the ball.”

A Heiberger infield single and a ringing double to right field by Holocker gave B-C the lead in the home first.

In the top of the second for Oglesby, Quinn Entrican drew a lead-off walk, advanced to third on a wild pitch and a steal, then scored on a bunt single by Kennedy Kasperski. However, Kasperski was tagged out trying to score on another ball to the screen and the frame ended tied.

But in the third, Bi-County regained the lead for good when Heiberger walked and lateer scored from third on a Holocker infield single.

“We knew that the Oglesby pitcher was very good, so I was a little bit ner-

vous, even though we’d seen her the night before,” said Holocker. “But once I saw others on our team hitting off of her, I relaxed a little and just did my best … We knew we didn’t need a lot of runs with Hannah on our team. She’s amazing.”

But while Heiberger was dealing, her team exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning, sending 14 batters to the plate without getting a hit. B-C drew seven walks and had a hit batter in the inning. In all, four B-C batters walked with the bags loaded.

“Like I said last night, their pitcher is just really good,” said Oglesby coach Nick Pelka. “With the accuracy and the heat she brings, we had to bring a new strategy tonight, try something different and it worked a little. It gave us a run and some base runners, but hat’s off to Bi-County … In fact, hats off to both teams. They both came out and played well like really good teams should in a big game like this.

“We were getting tired. It was a long season and it’s tough, especially after not having a season last summer. … But the girls played well and I’m proud of them.”

Heiberger outduels Oglesby’s Pelka to set up winner-take-all finale Thursday

cellerbrock@shawmedia.com PERU – With their backs against the wall needing to beat Oglesby on Wednesday, July 21 to force a winner-take-all deciding game in the District 20 Minor League tournament, Bi-County’s Hannah Heiberger was as near perfect in the circle as she could be.

But her effort might have been for naught if not for Avery Lenkaitis.

After Oglesby leadoff hitter Eliana Opsal bunted for her team’s first hit of the night against Heiberger and eventually came around to score the tying run in the top of the sixth inning, Bi-County rallied to load the bases in the home half and netted the winning run on a looping single to right-center field by Lenkaitis, giving Bi-County a 3-2 win and sending it into the championship game.

Lenkaitis’ heroics provided the difference in a pitchers duel between Heiberger and Oglesby’s Brooklyn Pelka, who surrendered just five hits and fanned eight.

However, Heiberger was better, allowing just one bunt single and one walk while striking out a whopping 17 of the 18 outs she recorded in the six-inning affair. The key was she walked only one, though that was in the first inning and it came around to score. Pelka, while not quite as overpowering, walked five, with the winning run scored by Emersyn Carboni in the sixth the only free pass to get that far.

“I was a little nervous, knowing that we had to win,” said Heiberger, who will pitch again tonight, the finale being her

I’m just glad we got the win.”

That lone walk came with one out in Oglesby’s first to Cara Kilmartin, who stole second, took third on a wild pitch, and scored when Quinn Entrican’s grounder was erred.

But Bi-County answered in its half on a one-out single by Heiberger, a steal, and McKay Gensini’s hard hit on the ground that took a bad hop in the outfield for three bases. B-C took the lead in the fourth when Gensini was hit by a pitch, Kennedy Holocker’s grounder was thrown away and Carboni walked, filling the bases. Lilliana Bouxsein then drew a walk to force in a run.

said Oglesby coach Nick Pelka. “Games like this, I don’t think my heart can take anymore … But (Heiberger) is a very good pitcher and it was a good pitchers’ duel. A couple runs here or there and maybe this is flip-flopped. … It was a hard-fought game and somebody has to win and someone has to lose, right? But it’s not over. We’ll come back and get ‘em tomorrow, play just as hard and this time hopefully come home with a victory.”

Oglesby came through with its backs against the wall this time, too. In the top of the sixth, Opsal bunted for the team’s first hit off Heiberger, then stole second and scored on a pair of wild pitches.

In the decisive home sixth, Carboni walked, Jolene Poole was hit by a pitch, and Bouxsein walked, bringing up Len-

kaitis hitting in the No. 9 spot for her clutch hit.

“Yes, that was my daughter,” said a bursting-with-pride B-C coach Jessica Lenkaitis of the game-winning hit. “We had a lot of opportunities to score runs tonight and didn’t always do that, but thankfully we got the one at the end when we needed it. … Hannah is phenomenal. She really is. She has her head in the game on every pitch, and she’s always ready to throw a strike. She puts a lot of work in during the offseason and it shows.

“This was a great win. These girls are fighters. They know they have to win each game to play the next, and we’ll be ready to take them on and do it again tomorrow.”
