State provides some support to schools

Putnam County School District finally receives $448,298.99

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — It was a short meeting, but it mostly contained good news, at least for a school district in Illinois.

While the Putnam County School District is still owed $609,721.23 in mandated funding from the state, they have received a payment of $448,298.99. This raises the total Corporate Personal Property Replacement Tax payments for the

Superintendent Carl Carlson said he wasn’t sure if any additional payments would be received because the court has ruled Medicaid payments take a precedent over other state obligations, which may put future categorical payments in jeopardy.

The Big House takes the big fall

Landmark being cleared to make way for parking

BY GOLDIE RAPP news@putnamcountyrecord.com SPRING VALLEY — Demolition crews spent Wednesday tearing down the notable white landmark known as The Big House in downtown Spring Valley.

The current owner of the property, Spring Valley City Bank, has intentions of using the location for over-flow parking.

Back in February, Bank President Matthew Merboth first announced plans to demolish the local historic structure.

Before the bank purchased the property, it had been gifted by the Bonucci family last year to Spring Valley Apostolic Tabernacle, which had plans to tear down the structure and build a new church.

However, Spring Valley Council denied the special use permit needed for the project. Council members had concerns about a church being compatible with neighboring residential homes and commercial properties.

The Big House operated as a renown Italian restaurant for years up until Nov. 1, 2015. It was known for its Monday night specials, which drew people from all over the area and beyond.

Ron Thone and his family had ran the business since 1979. The reason for closing was due to Thone’s retirement and the Bonucci family, who owned the property, had no interest in reigniting the restaurant.

The Bonuccis had ties to The Big House dating back to the early 1900s.

“Supposedly, guys in the business of selling booze illegally were frequent guests of the place,” he said. “It’s was always a busy, busy place up until 1980. If there was anything going on in the town of Spring Valley, you could find out more about it there at the bar of the Big House.”

The restaurant was the place the Bonuccis met for big family get-togethers.

“It was a warm, friendly, good place to go. The bonus was always after supper, you could run over across the parking lot and get an ice cream cone for 10 cents,” Bonucci said. “I have a ton of great memories there as a kid.”

The business was passed on to Bonucci’s grandparents and while his dad never had much interest in running the restaurant business himself, the family continued to own the property and his grand-

mother convinced Thone, who was a busboy in the restaurant, to take over management.

Over the years, notables like boxer Jack Dempsey,

Sen. Everett Dirksen and violinist David Rubinoff enjoyed the home-style ambience and cooking of The Big House.

Before The Big House

was a bar and renown Italian restaurant, it was home to Sam Dalzell, who was manager of Spring Valley Coal Co. He built the home in 1890.

New Small Business Development Center welcomes new director Lambert credited with co-founding Startup Peoria

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — Although the local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) had been located at IVCC for 30 years, it closed at the end of 2016 because of funding problems related to the state’s budget troubles.

However, the Starved Rock

Country Alliance (SRCA) has announced they have both a new plan and a new director for a revitalized SBDC .

The SRCA, a non-profit community development group, secured funding through an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant and from contributions from the five communities where the new SBDC’s decentralized offices will be located.

SBDC will maintain an active presence throughout Bureau, LaSalle and Livingston counties by having regular office hours in Princeton, Peru, Pontiac, Streator and Ottawa.

The new SBDC will be led by its new executive director, Amy Lambert.

Lambert began work at the SBDC on June 26. She’ll coordinate personal counseling with those interested in starting new business endeavors, as well as helping existing small businesses with their concerns.

According to a press release, Lambert was central to the development of the entrepreneurial environment in the Peoria area. She co-founded Startup Peoria, now known as StartupGP, and assisted new business owners by establishing a variety of programs to help them with funding, networking and training.

Dollar Tree is a discount variety store chain located throughout the United States. Everything at the store costs $1 or less. There are more than 4,000 Dollar Tree stores in the continental U.S. Dollar Tree stores carry a variety of products, including housewares, party supplies, health and beauty products, toys, gifts, stationary, teaching supplies, books and foodstuffs, according to the company’s website. Peru Mall to lose another anchor in Sears

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com PERU — The prospects of Sears have seemingly fallen from the heights of the famous Sears Tower and the impact of that plummet will soon be felt in the Peru Mall.

Sears recently announced the

impending closure of 43 more retail locations on top of the 265 stores they’ve previously announced. The list encompasses eight Sears stores, including the anchor store in the Peru Mall, the only Illinois closure, and 35 Kmarts.

Sears was founded in 1893 as a mail order company, and through

their catalogs anything a home could need — including the home itself, could be easily purchased.

They began opening retail locations in 1925 and were the largest retailer in the nation until eclipsed

by Walmart in 1989.

Two arrested, face heroin charges PERU — Two Peru residents were taken into custody July 18 after police raided their apartment, finding suspected raw heroin and large amounts of currency.

Mark A. Chaparro, 41, of Peru was charged with the Class X felony of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (heroin) with the intent to deliver after being taken into custody at 3:46 p.m. July 18. Shalayna M. Worley, 26, of Peru was charged with obstruction of identification.

The Peru Police Department Special Investigation Unit (SIU) after receiving reports of possible drug activity in and around an apartment in the 1700 block of Walnut Street initiated a several months narcotics investigation.

With the help from the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s office, a search warrant was obtained for the apartment, which was executed July 18

tives, and members of the Peru Police Department Emergency Response Team (PERT). During the course of the search, detectives seized suspected raw heroin and a large amount of currency.

This arrest made by the Peru SIU is yet another arrest as part of the Peru Police Departments ongoing commitment to the community in targeting heroin distribution in the area, said Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei.

“The Peru Police Department with the support from the mayor and city council has committed many resources to fighting the drug problem facing our area,” said Bernabei. “With these resources, we will continue our enforcement efforts and it is my genuine belief that these arrests will continue until such time that we eliminate heroin distribution the community.

ince I focus on the older generation, some things come to mind about our habits! I know! Who wants to talk about “that?” However, we do pick up some patterns that can get us stuck on one theme. One is living and talking about the past.

Of course, the past is a huge part of our lives, and the present is sometimes boring or strange to us, and of course, darn frightening. We see folks, communities and our governments repeating the same mistakes, and we are sometimes really alarmed — since we saw that same thing before, and it really didn’t work well or it had downright tragic consequences.

Our perspective comes into play, and we want to shout to the rooftops: “No! Stop! That won’t work!”

Now, of course, people think they are acting in everyone’s best interest or maybe not. It doesn’t matter. The stage is set, and we have to live with it or through it. We discover that those who do not study history or seek advice or won’t do either, can really set a bad play up on the stage of history.

We know all this because we have seen it play out ourselves.

Maybe that is why we think and talk and live in the past. It is so scary now.

Don’t despair. There are

COMMENTARY Nedda Simon plenty of wise folks out there who are studying history, experimenting with new formulas, exploring new horizons, listening to others who have tried and failed. Great books are being written; wise people are becoming adults with open minds and great ideas.

We need to focus on all the new; listen to the young; and hear what they are doing in the work place. We need to keep

learning, exploring ourselves, and weeding out the boring and wrong notions we have. Ask young people (that would be anybody younger than us!) what they think, dream and wish for our future. We all may get wiser.

The past has its place of course. Hopefully it teaches us, and we must study the lessons.

However, generally, most people don’t care about the past. They need to deal with the present and make it better and set some plans for the future that makes things right for everybody.

We can help them. We won’t tell them “it” won’t work but urge a different solution and help them along with the idea.

PERSPECTIVE We can hope and pray for them and give them encouragement and say, often, “Good job”.

I’m going to try to take my own advice and not bore others with the same story just because I thought it was great the first time 25 years ago. Oh, by the way. To all the parents with kids out of school now, just hold on for a few weeks, and school will start again. Peace and quiet will reign again, and the teachers get to bear up!

Above all, we can remember to be kind.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Shame in Illinois To the Editor, Surely, the representatives of our great state of Illinois are congratulating themselves for finally doing their job! Haven’t you heard the biggest news to come out of Springfield in years?

All the news media is trumpeting this glorious achievement. Yes! That’s right. The state of Illinois — you know, the state with the nation’s most miserable credit — has a BUDGET! Now I don’t mean to be cynical. After all, folks will finally get paid what they have coming after waiting far too long. But shame on the legislators for not paying our bills like any other respectable human being. The hypocrites. They have been more than happy to pay themselves for accomplishing nothing with money we don’t have — as other hard-working folks wait and wait for payment honestly earned.

Not that having a passed a budget is all that wonderful in the first place. A piece of paper with figures and promises and projections. And taking more in tax revenue to make it appear balanced. (Just wish they could show a modicum of wise stewardship with the tax dollars they already collect). Unfortunately, the tax paying citizen will suffer in the end. Again. He is compelled to support a broken state government that refuses to alter course after years of utter failure.

None of the underlying structural problems are being resolved.

More kick-the-can down the road mentality. You know — pass the bill to our kids. And drive more jobs out of state as the corporations are soaked and gladly exit our company.

It takes courage to make the hard decisions that need to be made. Pensions, legal reform, workplace rules, term limits, and redistricting just to name a few.

Sadly, courage is in short supply.

Much easier to go along with party leadership that is so firmly entrenched, it has lost all sense of fiscal reality or moral judgment.

Which brings us to my final point. Our great state — the Land of Lincoln — is the laughing stock around the entire country.

Want to know how NOT to run a state government? Illinois would be a case study extraordinaire.

But who is to blame? Ultimately, it is we ourselves who are to blame. We have allowed this nonsense to continue for way

‘Too much government’ To the Editor Revamp our Obamacare is a given. Look at the numbers; we had added millions onto the welfare of health care. As entitlements make up by those who had given up to work and pay their own health care. We lost a million Illinois residents due to our Democratic state officials who only know how to raise taxes and not create new jobs.

It’s new jobs that pay the bills and grow the economy.

Those of us who pay the high cost of present health care insurance premiums, shouldn’t. The government has no right to force us. The Amish doesn’t pay this tax. They cover there own needs.

We have too much government, and we need to use our government to protect us from our enemies not tax us out of the state and country. Are we so lazy or ignorant that we can’t see the forest because of all the trees?

I support school funding reform To the Editor, School funding reform is of the utmost importance to all Illinois residents, whether they have children in the public school system or not. The majority of funding for our public schools is supposed to be given by the state government, yet over time the state has fallen short of this constitutional mandate. When that happens, the responsibility is shifted to the property taxpayers, which is why we pay so much more here in Illinois than in surrounding states.

The budget passed earlier this month left many questions in regards to education funding.

Specifically, the budget increased funding for education, but only appropriates that money if the evidence based model is in effect.

Currently, the foundation formula is in state statute, so money

cannot be distributed to school districts until that is changed.

This is a clear example of the majority party using children to further their political agenda.

During the spring legislative session, a bipartisan working group of Democrats and Republicans made great strides negotiating to change current foundation formula to the evidence-based model. Unfortunately, like we see far too often, the majority party walked away from negotiations.

Instead, in the final week of session, they ran their own bill which imbeds a perpetual Chicago Public Schools (CPS) pension bailout into the formula.

School funding reform is about making sure all 852 school districts in Illinois receive the funding they need to educate their students properly. That’s why the proposed idea that 70 percent of the new funding will head to Chicago when they only contain 23 percent of our student population is preposterous. This CPS bailout is not about improved learning for CPS students. This money will not be headed for the classrooms. It is about adults’ pensions, not children’s education.

How does bailing out CPS pensions help students in classrooms anywhere else around the state?

That’s why I have chosen to support bills that truly send the money where it is needed. Both HB4069 and SB1124 provide equitable funding for Illinois Valley schools as well as Chicago.

By sitting back and accepting SB1 for what it is, I would be actively allowing almost $2 million that our school districts deserve, to be sent up to Chicago to correct years of financial mismanagement.

I am focused on ensuring Illinois is taking a fair approach so that all school districts get the critical resources they need to educate our children.

‘A better chance of staying dry’ To the Editor, Illinois is seeing first-hand the havoc flooding creates for people in Northern Illinois. Four counties have been declared disaster areas as the Fox River, Des Plaines River, Chain of Lakes and other waterways have wiped out property and infrastructure.

The state of Illinois has the largest collection of inland bodies of water and rivers in the continental United States. Twelve

percent of surface in Illinois is mapped as a flood plain. My 38th Senate District, which stretches from Bureau County on the west to Will County on the east, has about 130 miles worth of river frontage, one of the most in the state. Ottawa alone is the watershed for 12,000 square miles.

Flooding is serious in Illinois, and it requires a serious approach to deal with it.

Like Northern Illinois right now, in 2013, communities I represent along the Illinois and Fox rivers also lived the hardships that comes with severe flooding. Many neighborhoods, businesses and infrastructure were destroyed.

The Morris Hospital had to close.

Thousands of lives were impacted; property was lost; tokens of precious memories were gone forever; and infrastructure had to be rebuilt. That flood cost LaSalle and Grundy counties alone more than $150 million.

That’s why after that flood, my office teamed up with local leaders and started the Illinois Valley Flood Resiliency Alliance (IVFRA). The IVFRA brings communities, local governments and emergency personnel together as one unit to prepare for and battle floods. It includes LaSalle, Grundy, Bureau, and Putnam counties.

The IVFRA meets four times a year and has resiliency plans in place for the region. Cities in my district have implemented new flood-related ordinances that are helping keep water away from homes, schools and businesses.

There are also now 24 new certified floodplain managers in my district.

The IVFRA has received statewide and national attention. It’s is also now approved as a continuing education credit for certified floodplain managers.

In April, our area saw rising rivers and streams after heavy rainfall. However, after coordinating with members of our Illinois Valley Flood Resiliency Alliance, the impact was minimal. How governments respond upstream and downstream impacts other communities along the waterway.

So, being on the same page as a region has made a big difference.

The IVFRA is truly a model other regions of the state and the country should adopt. It has given our communities a better chance at staying dry.

Bi-County All-Stars win District 20 title LASALLE — The Bi-County All Star team consisting of team members from Putnam County and Tonica won the District 20 Minor League title on July 19 by defeating LaSalle 14-13 in seven innings.

Other games in the double-elimination tournament were Bi-County losing to Oglesby 8-7 in eight innings on July 13, beating Mendota 6-1 on July 14, beating LaSalle 14-13 on July 15, beating Oglesby 14-10 on July 16, and beating Peru 10-7 on July 17.

For over 20 years the cost of grave spaces at the Granville Cemetery has been $300.00 each. At a recent board of director’s meeting, it was voted to raise the price to $400.00 effective October 1, 2017. We have opened up new sections of the cemetery, the area west of the Mausoleum and south, due to the lack of available spaces for sale in the current sections. You will soon see construction of a gravel road giving access to this new area.

Rotary sees caring side of cancer care PERU — Putnam County Rotary’s “road trip” to the Valley Regional Cancer Center in Peru on July 13 was a journey into the unknown — and a realization of how fortunate residents of the Illinois Valley are to be able to receive highly skilled medical care when and where they need it most!

Located north of the Target store in Peru, the Center combines a highly equipped clinical laboratory, a full range of diagnostic imaging, chemotherapy and radi-

ation therapy, all under one roof — a “one stop shop” for diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancer and blood disorders.

Following dinner catered in by neighboring Jalapeno’s Restaurant, program host Adriane Shore introduced fellow Rotarian Karen Karczewski, clinical coordinator for Valley Regional Health Services, as well as nuclear medicine technologist Michell Heider of Alliance Radiology and marketing specialist Nancy Jack-

son of McKesson Oncology. The three provided a tour of the facilities and explained the services provided at the Center.

Two medical oncologists and one radiation oncologist staff the Center on a full-time basis and are on call for after hours and weekend emergencies. The facility serves hundreds of patients each week, who would otherwise have to travel to obtain similar services in Rockford, Chicago or Peoria, or in some cases out of state.

Online registration opened on July 1. Parents with a Teacherease login can login and fill out the registration forms. Annual memory ride and benefit set for Aug. 19 HENRY — The fifth annual Larry Klein Memory Ride and Benefit will be Saturday, Aug. 19, in Henry.

A memory ride will begin at 11 a.m., with sign up beginning at 10 a.m. at Shandy’s Pub & Grub in Henry. The cost is $15 per participant, which includes a meal ticket. All vehicles are welcome. PRINCETON — For its last production of the summer season, Festival 56 offers “Sweet Charity,” an award-winning musical with a star-studded history. The show runs from July 28 to Aug. 6 at the Grace Performing Arts Center in Princeton.

“Sweet Charity” is based on a Federico Fellini film, “Nights of Cabiria.”

Adapted by Neil Simon, it debuted in 1966 on Broadway with music by Cy Coleman (“Hey! Look Me Over”) and lyrics by Dorothy Fields (“On the Sunny Side of the Street,” “I’m In the Mood for Love”). It was directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse and starred Gwen Verdon.

In the musical, Charity Hope Valentine is a taxi dancer (so named because the girls were hired for time spent with customers on the dance floor) at a Times Square dance hall. Her middle name becomes significant as she bounces back from one romantic disappointment after another. Finally she meets Oscar, the man of her dreams, who calls her “Sweet Charity.”

Will he disappoint her, too?

“Sweet Charity” was nominated for nine Tony awards, has played in

countries all over the world, and has enjoyed many revivals. A 1969 movie version starred Shirley MacLaine and John McMartin and was again directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse.

Registration is open for 5K Run/Walk for the Kids during Ottawa’s Riverfest OTTAWA — Pull out your running shoes because the Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy & Child Development’s (formerly Easter Seals LBC) annual 5K Run/Walk for the Kids will kick off during Ottawa’s Riverfest festivities on Saturday, Aug. 5.

The Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy & Child Development (SRRC) 5K Run/Walk for the Kids starts and ends at Ottawa Township High School, 211 East Main St., Ottawa. Check in and race day registration begins at 6:30 a.m., runners start at 8 a.m. The run/walk follows a USA Track and Field certified course, winding through the historic east side of Ottawa, including the scenic Illinois and Michigan Canal passage.

One hundred percent of all money raised at this event

remains local, helping children in the community to achieve their maximum potential.

Runners will be timed and the top overall female and male runners will receive trophies. Also, runners placing first, second or third in 13 different age categories will receive medals.

LASALLE — The LaSalle Public Library will host bat naturalists Dan and Sharon Peterson at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 27, with a program that will educate and entertain with exciting facts about bat species.

Using an interactive, multimedia presentation, Dan and Sharon will introduce the audience to many bat species of the world, as well as focusing in more detail on species native to Illinois, and dispelling negative myths. Discover how bats echolocate, what kinds of foods they eat, and contributions they make to the environment, to humans, and the places bats inhabit. Learn about the difficulties facing bats and what can be done to conserve these remarkable animals.

Following the presentation, the Petersons will provide a unique opportunity for the audience by featuring live bats.

Both the Egyptian Fruit Bat and an African Straw-Colored Fruit Bat will provide opportunities for the audience to learn more about these bats, and for many audience members, provide a surprising hands-on experience with these fantastic night animals. The Petersons, in addition to their bats, will bring Baxter, the sweet-smelling skunk and his sister, Bella.

MEETING MINUTES IVCC BOARD OGLESBY — The state budget that survived a veto from Gov. Bruce Rauner last week will bring financial assurances to Illinois Valley Community College after more than two years of uncertainty, IVCC President Jerry Corcoran told the board July 13.

Corcoran credited the college community for remaining optimistic throughout the prolonged stalemate.

“Our students, faculty, staff and board have all handled this unfortunate problem well, without anyone overreacting to a very difficult situation. Similar to what one of IVCC’s state representatives Bob Pritchard (R-Hinckley) said when commenting on why he voted for the budget, I too believe this is what we needed to turn things around and help stabilize enrollment,” Corcoran said.

The college expects to be reimbursed for MAP payments it fronted to students in 2016-17 including

$307,706.92 for the fall semester alone.

In other business, the board approved a tentative 2018 budget totaling more than $31 million.

Revenue for all funds is $31,208,559, a 5.1 percent decrease from 2017 and expenditures are $31,850,619, a 5.1 percent decrease.

Operating budget revenue is $21,354,944, a 3.1 percent decrease from the previous year. Expenditures are $21,431,044, a 3.8 percent decrease. To balance operating funds, there will be a transfer of $87,000 from auxiliary funds for IT infrastructure.

Trustees also approved naming an open “pre-function” area near the Cultural Centre and a pair of adjacent conference rooms for donor and alumnus Ralph Scriba of Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif.

Scriba’s recent $50,000 donation for agriculture scholarships and instructional equipment put his total donations at $250,000 since he

began giving to IVCC in 2013. Scriba graduated from IVCC predecessor La Salle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College in 1951 and was inducted into the IVCC-LPO Hall of Fame in 2015.

“With the most recent donation, Mr. Scriba qualifies for a new level of recognition based on the naming rights policy,” said Corcoran.

The pre-function area and CTC124 and 125 will be named “The Ralph Scriba Conference Center.” A formal naming ceremony is planned for the fall semester.

Trustees also approved: • The appointment of Bonnie Campbell as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs until Deborah Anderson returns. Campbell is the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.

• The appointment of nursing instructor Maddalena Alfano, a parttime instructor in the program and a former clinical education, clinical educator scholar and RN at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

ImAGination Acres is a popular place at M-P Fair HENRY — Many a bushel of corn were loaded onto barges at Acres O’Grain Elevator, ImAGination Acres newest attraction.

The tugboat, Imagination, was in place for them to “push” the barges down the river.

ImAGination Acres is the young children’s play area at the Marshall-Putnam Fair. It is provided

by Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau with the assistance of University of Illinois Extension Marshall Putnam Ag in the Classroom and is made up of a variety of ag-related stations.

Two newly-designed water tables were a big hit with young children. Here, they made a pinwheel turn, floated a ping pong ball in a bird feeder and cascaded water through a waterfall. The Farmer’s Market was located just outside the vegetable garden and “sold” a variety

of produce. Pagano’s Pizzeria, where pretend pizza was made to order, and the ever popular Excavating Sand Pit were never without occupants. Another new attraction this year was the big red barn surrounded by six animal pens containing farm animals. Children hauled bales of straw and hay as well as animals with the tractors and wagons provided. Ag Fun Things to Do, sponsored by First State Bank of McNabb and Marshall Putnam Ag in the Classroom, had children making volcano and polka dot wave bottles and Farmer Mac’s Moon Sand.

Making fluffy foam, baking soda volcanos and mixing colored water to create new colors were additional scheduled activities during the fair. So many people contributed time and money to make possible this popular attraction.

Touting the health benefits of tea A drink that can soothe your soul and help your body at the same time We sip it. We slurp it.

Sometimes on those hot, summer days, we even gulp it.

But regardless of how we actually drink it, tea is known to have properties that can offer one a healthier alternative to other beverages.

According to webmd. com, tea has been regarded as a key to good health for thousands of years in the East, where it’s believed teas is a good component to good health, wisdom and happiness. From that knowledge, people in the western part of the world — which includes the United States — have also found there are many health benefits of a variety of teas.

In fact, studies have found some teas might help with certain diseases of the heart, cancer and diabetes. Some may also help with weight loss, lowering cholesterol and helping with being mentally

alert, primarily because of the caffeine associated with the drink.

“There doesn’t seem to be a downside to tea,” says American Dietetic Association spokeswoman Katherine Tallmadge, MA, RD, LD. “I think it’s a great alternative to coffee drinking. First, tea has less caffeine. It’s pretty well established that the compounds in tea – their flavonoids – are good for the heart and may reduce cancer.”

Of course there are still questions about how long a cup of tea actually needs to be steeped to derive the most from this popular drink — as well as questions about how much tea one needs to drink to reap the benefits — most nutritionists believe any tea is primarily a good tea — especially those that are brewed versus bottled teas, which often add extra calories with flavors and sweeteners.

The color spectrum: Green, black and white teas Green tea

White tea

This tea is made with steamed tea leaves, and it has a high concentration of EGCG. While antioxidants from green tea may interfere with the growth of bladder, breast, lung, stomach, pancreatic and colorectal cancers, it is also known to help prevent clogging of one’s arteries, helps to burn fat, work against stress on the brain, reduce risks of neurological issues like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and strokes, as well as improve cholesterol levels.

This tea is uncured and unfermented. One study showed white tea has the most potent anti-cancer properties compared to more processed teas.

Black tea This tea is made with fermented tea leaves. It is known to have the highest amount of caffeine, and it is usually the base for flavored teas like chai and some instant tea varieties. Studies have shown black tea may protect lungs from damage to these organs caused by cigarette smoke. It also may reduce the risk of stroke.

Getting to know herb: Herbal teas Herbal teas are made from herbs, roots, seeds and fruits that are steeped in hot water. It’s known herbal teas have a lower concentration of antioxidants than green, white, black and oolong teas, and according to webmd.com, the make-up of these teas vary depending on what plants are used. Some of the varieties include ginger, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, hibiscus, jasmine, rosehip, mint, rooibos (red tea), chamomile and echinacea. Here are some findings regarding herbal teas:

Oolong tea With this tea in an animal study, those animals given antioxidants from oolong tea were found to have lower bad cholesterol levels. One variety of oolong, Wuyi, is heavily marketed as a weight loss supplement, but science hasn’t backed the claims.

Pu-erh tea This tea is made from fermented and aged leaves.

Thought of as a black tea, its leaves are pressed into cakes. One animal study showed that animals given pu-erh had less weight gain and reduced LDL cholesterol.

Echinacea

Its antioxidants may help prevent complications from diabetes, like loss of vision and nerve and kidney damage, and stunt the growth of cancer cells.

Often touted as a way to fight the common cold, but the research on echinacea has been inconclusive.

Hibiscus

A South African herb that is fermented. Although it has flavonoids with cancer-fighting properties, medical studies have been limited.

A small study found that drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily lowered blood pressure in people with modestly elevated levels.

Rooibos (red tea)

The tradition of High Tea began in England in the mid-1700s. It was an afternoon meal that was usually served between 3 and 4 p.m. and held primarily for men who were working. They ate and drank standing up or seated on tall stools, thus the name “High Tea.” At that time, tea would be served along with cakes, scones, cheese on toast or other pieces of bread.

As time passed High Tea became more of a social event, rather than a working man’s snack. High Tea began popping up on social calendars for ladies and gentlemen throughout England.

Since the evening meal was usually served late — never before 8 or 9 p.m., the High Tea for those not working helped to keep their belly from being empty. Many times it was held prior to playing cards or going to the theater.

If you enjoy a good sandwich now and then, you’ve got High Tea to thank for it. John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, developed the concept of putting meat and other delicious fillings between two slices of bread — a sandwich. These sandwiches caught on quickly for High Teas participants.

High Tea is celebrated around the world in a variety of fashions.

Thinking about health U.S. health care ranked lower than in most developed nations

One thing I haven’t heard much in this latest health care debate is that the U.S. has the best health system in the world. That’s different from the last two times around.

When the nation debated the Clinton health plan in 1994 and the Affordable Care Act in 2009-10, a huge talking point for politicians and special business interests opposed to reform was, “The American system is so good, why change it?�

It’s different this year. Maybe that’s because the public realizes America doesn’t have the best, and their own interactions with what American health care has become tell them a different story. The old talking point doesn’t compute any more.

Of course, we’ve all had some good experiences. And we generally continue to believe the money we spend on super expensive technology and medicines equates to good care even though evidence shows those costly interventions may not deliver as advertised and actually may be harmful.

However, taken as a whole and measured on several dimensions, including access to care, administrative efficiency, equity and health outcomes, the U.S. compares poorly relative to other industrialized countries.

In its latest study comparing the U.S. with 10 other countries – the United Kingdom, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Canada and France – the U.S. ranks dead last. This is the sixth time since 2004 The Commonwealth Fund, which supports Thinking

About Health columns, has done such a survey. “Each time we have managed to be last,� says Eric Schneider, a senior vice president of the Fund.

I’ve been writing about these surveys since they began, but this time the findings really grabbed my attention, especially this: In the U.S., 44 percent of people with incomes below the median – about $55,700 in 2015 – reported the cost of care prevented them from getting medical treatment they needed. Twenty-six percent of those with incomes above the median also said financial barriers prevent them from getting care. That means that the high deductibles and high co-insurance that most health plans now require makes it hard to pay for care.

By contrast, in the U.K. only 7 percent of people with low incomes and only 4 percent of those with higher incomes said they had trouble getting care.

Yes, that’s England, the nation whose National Health Service has been much maligned by American politicians over the years.

In this latest survey, the U.K. ranked No. 1 overall and was judged the best when it came to equity and the process of care — preventive care, safe care, coordinated care and patient preferences — and third when it came to access.

People in Britain seem to be doing OK

despite all those queues for services Americans have heard about from the media.

When it came to equity, access to care, and health outcomes, the U.S. ranked last, which also challenges the common assumption we have the best care in the world.

The U.S. has given a lot of attention to health care over the past decade, and the positive changes made by the Affordable Care Act have substantially decreased the number of uninsured and provided generous subsidies to help them buy coverage.

I would have expected our rankings to improve. I asked Schneider about that.

He explained the lack of universal coverage is a barrier, and the cost of care is still too high for too many Americans, even if they have insurance.

Families with incomes in the middle ranges of eligibility for ACA subsidies – incomes of around $60,000 or $70,000 - get small subsidies and face high deductibles and other cost-sharing, a trade-off they must make if they can afford only plans with low premiums.

Our complicated system of getting medical bills paid and the endless negotiations between providers and insurers – in other words, the administrative hassle — is also a huge drawback.

Fifty-four percent of U.S. primary care doctors said insurance restrictions made it hard to get needed treatment for their patients, Schneider said. “That’s a big problem.�

The U.K., Australia and New Zealand shine on this dimension. Schneider said if the U.S. changed the way it pays providers, used fee schedules and global budgets — an amount a country, group

Just as important, Schneider told me, was the lack of U.S. investment in primary care compared to other countries where primary care is more widely and uniformly available. They dedicate a greater percentage of their medical workforce to that kind of care rather than specialty care. The U.S favors expensive specialists.

So does the U.S. do well on anything?

Although we ranked last on overall health outcomes such as life expectancy at age 60, there were bright spots such as breast cancer survival and fewer hospital deaths for heart attacks and stroke.

Those few achievements are simply not good enough.

Don’t take fatigue lying down Have you ever had one of those days where you are so weary, you can’t seem to do anything except binge-watch Netflix?

Sure, everyone gets tired sometimes, and often bounces back after a quick rest or a good night’s sleep. However, if bouts of fatigue occur more often and last longer, you shouldn’t ignore them.

“Older adults may chalk up fatigue to aging, but there is no reason you should battle ongoing tiredness,” says Dr. Suzanne Salamon, a geriatric physician with Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Here are signs that you should take your tiredness seriously:

• Inability to do activities you enjoy.

• Waking up exhausted, even after a good night’s sleep.

• Not feeling motivated to begin the day.

• Sudden bouts of exhaustion that go away and then return.

• Shortness of breath.

This type of fatigue can affect your health in many ways. You may have less energy to exercise. You may have trouble concentrating, staying alert and remembering things. You may anger easily and become more socially isolated.

It’s worth checking in with your doctor Fatigue also could signal a medical condition, according to Dr. Salamon, and you should consult your doctor to see if you have any of the following issues.

Anemia

This occurs when your blood has too few red blood cells or those cells have too little hemoglobin, a protein that transports oxygen through the bloodstream. The result is a drop in energy levels.

Heart disease

Heart disease can cause the heart to pump blood less efficiently and lead to fluid in the lungs. This can cause shortness of breath and reduce the oxygen supply to the heart and lungs, making you tired.

Sleep problems

Sleep apnea is characterized by pauses in your breathing, often lasting several seconds, or shallow breathing while you sleep.

It is common among older adults and those who are overweight.

Another sleep-related issue is an overactive bladder, which forces repeated nighttime bathroom trips.

Either of these can disturb your sleep

enough to leave you feeling tired during the day.

Medication

Certain medications can make you feel tired, such as blood pressure drugs, statins, antidepressants, antihistamines, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and cold medications.

“People react to medications differently and they often end up taking more as they get older,” said Dr. Salamon.

Check with your doctor, especially if you have added a new medication or recently increased your dosage. “Sometimes it helps to take certain medicines, which may cause fatigue, at night rather than in the daytime,” she says.

Low-grade depression or anxiety

Mental health issues often drain energy levels. “You may suffer from depression or anxiety and not even know it,” says Dr. Salamon.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)

This is a complex disorder that causes unexplained extreme fatigue, which can worsen after physical or mental activity and does not improve with rest.

Its cause is unknown, but may be linked to one or more underlying issues.

Some simple ways to boost energy levels

For regular, everyday fatigue, try these tips:

Drink a cup of coffee or tea

A little caffeine can jump-start your day, she says. “You don’t need more than that, but it can offer a mental and physical lift, especially if you have trouble with morning fatigue.”

Go for a 30-minute walk.

“If you can’t get outside, walk around your house in bouts of 10 to 15 minutes, two to three times a day,” says Dr. Salamon.

Take a nap

A midday nap can help overcome tiredness later in the day. Keep naps to about 20 to 30 minutes, as studies have suggested that napping for 40 minutes or longer can have the opposite effect and leave you feeling groggy rather than refreshed. “Also, don’t nap too late in the day or in the early evening, when it could interfere with your normal sleep schedule,” said Dr. Salamon.

Five key questions to help you develop a care-giving plan If you’re taking on the role of caregiver for the first time, you probably have many questions: What exactly will it entail? Where can you find help? How do you even start?

When faced with this kind of uncertainty, the best thing you can do for your loved one — and yourself — is to make a care-giving plan. Of course, your loved one’s needs may change over time, and you can never plan for every last detail or eventuality. But if you begin by covering the basics, you will have an important foundation to build on later.

Close to 49 million informal or family caregivers offer assistance of all sorts to adults in America. Their efforts are vital to the lives of people struggling with illness, disability or the changes that often accompany aging. This report will assist you in meeting the needs of the person you care for while attending to your own. It includes

financial, legal and medical information that’s vital to caregivers, as well as a special section devoted to caring for yourself as you navigate care-giving challenges.

Your initial care-giving plan will largely depend on your answers to these five key questions: For whom are you caring — an aging parent, an ill partner or friend, or a disabled family member?

What precipitated the need for care?

Is the situation time-limited (e.g., for someone who needs care while healing from surgery or an injury) or likely to continue indefinitely?

What care or services will the person need?

Aside from basic needs, what does your loved one want? For example, elderly parents may want to continue living independently at home rather than move in with you or to a nursing home. How can you help the person meet these goals?

As you begin to develop your plan, think about your

own care-giving goals, too. The circumstances for each person and his or her needs will of course vary, but you can definitely make it a goal to treat your loved one with compassion and honor his or her dignity at all times.

Next, have an open, honest conversation with your care recipient about what both of you expect and determine just what issues need to be addressed.

However, an initial plan is just that — a first step.

Change is one of the few certainties of care giving, so it is important to re-evaluate your situation early and often, and to make changes whenever necessary. If possible, it can help to keep a step or two ahead by asking your loved one’s doctors and other experts for their assessment of how the situation might change in another few weeks, months or years.

Recovering alcoholics can be great Dads Six tips to help you parent the right way The night before Michael Graubart’s first of four children was born, he told a friend in Alcoholics Anonymous, “I’m not ready for this.”

He was 41.

Few men are 100 percent ready to be a father when the time comes, but recovering alcoholics and addicts struggle perhaps more than anyone else to get fatherhood right and not repeat the mistakes they witnessed growing up.

“Parenting isn’t a game of perfect, but alcoholics can be perfectionists, and we have to learn to lighten up,” Graubart said.

“We might not have had the best role models growing up, but we can be outstanding Dads ourselves.”

Graubart offers tips on how to be an outstanding father even if one is a recov-

ering addict or alcoholic: • Embrace your manhood.

It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. In our society, people sometimes make fun of the concept of manhood, turning it into a caricature of John Wayne. In reality, true manhood is the willingness to embrace personal responsibility as an adult. Your child needs a man, not a guy, for a father.

• Discipline yourself before you discipline your child.

If you want your child to grow up the right way, you’ve got to grow up first. This means confronting the areas where you may have tolerated your own immaturity because it wasn’t really affecting anyone that seriously. Not anymore!

• Anger doesn’t belong in your home.

The most damaging thing you can do to your kids is use anger on them or your

spouse. Anger terrifies kids without educating them about the right way to do things. Instead of anger, find another way to make your points.

• You will lose every fight with your wife.

If you win, you lose. If you tie, you lose.

And if you lose, you lose. So why bother?

Always reward good behavior and good grades. At the office you can win trips and trophies for doing a great job. I’ve made trophies for my kids for being a “great older brother” or just simply for getting great grades. Everybody loves awards, especially kids.

Your kids don’t need to know everything about you. Don’t over share about your drinking and drugging days. It may be entertaining to you, but it’s usually terrifying to kids to hear what a meatball their dad really was.
