HENNEPIN — Finances, now more than ever, are at the forefront of Putnam County Board’s concerns.

Board members, who worked diligently to slash nearly $1 million from this year’s budget are facing additional financial strains due to COVID-19 related decreases in tax revenue and a recent tax bill error.

Treasurer Kevin Kunkel reported to the board that 2020 income vs.

2019 is about half of what the county was at this time last year as the first installment of tax bills comes due. He said there does appear to be a lot of people delaying payment until the second installment is due in September.

Kunkel also said he believes a number of people are waiting for corrected tax bills, after a snafu in

billing sent incorrect bills to tax payers.

“We’ve sent $21,000 in refunds,” he said. “And we’re fielding a lot of calls.”

Kunkel said the individual errors weren’t large, maybe $50-$60, but that adds up when multiplied by the number of taxpayers. Those who paid in full received or will receive a refund check, those who paid just the first installment will see a credit on the amount due in September.

Kunkel also said sales tax is way down and it will be “interesting” to see what the numbers are by the year’s end. Right now, he says revenue year-to-date is about $1.5 million, while expenses are sitting at $1.6 million.

“We should be OK this year, barring any large, unexpected expenses,” he said, “But we’re going to need to be prepared for next year.”

Sheriff Kevin Doyle reported to the board that traffic has increased at the courthouse with the Phase 4 reopening to the public and he’s employing cost-saving techniques there.

Office personnel have been on hand to monitor temperatures of anyone entering the building, which they’ve cut down to one entrance to better monitor traffic.

The board discussed whether to purchase a thermal imaging camera, similar to those being utilized at other courthouses, but Doyle said at this time it isn’t likely because he’d still need someone to oversee its use.

“We also have to be careful about all our purchases,” board member Charlie Lenkaitis said. “Even if it’s reimbursed 100%, it looks bad for residents to see us spending money, especially if we’re going for a referendum in the fall.”

Master Gardener Program accepting online applications For the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program, the last four decades can be measured by the millions of volunteer hours given to help bring horticultural help to communities across the state.

This year marks the 48th anniversary of the Illinois Master Gardener program. With more than 2,600 volunteers today, Illinois Master Gardeners have given more than 2,309,348 volunteer hours, a value of more than $46 million, to the state.

Today, Master Gardener volunteers — who come from farms, small towns, suburbs and cities — offer numerous educational opportunities related to gardening in nearly every county in the state.

The mission of the Illinois Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.” After 60 hours of training in topics such as vegetable and flower gardening, insect problems and plant diseases, the volunteers participate in programs throughout their communities.

Some of those opportunities may include speaking at garden clubs, civic groups or schools; answering calls or emails at garden help desks; establishing demonstration gardens that serve as educational tools and educating citizens on how to establish community gardens.

You don’t have to be a gardening expert to become a Master Gardener.

All you need is an interest in gardening, some time to volunteer in

the community and a desire to share your knowledge with others. The program is more about connections; connecting people with other gardeners, with their community and with reliable resources for information. Once connections are forged, it’s time to get sowing and growing in our many meaningful community projects.

The University of Illinois Extension in Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties is now accepting applications to participate in the Online Master Gardener Training Program. This online program allows volunteers to complete the training who may have never been able to in the past due to schedule or time conflicts. This online, self-guided course for Illinois residents can be completed any time of day or night.

Set aside about four hours per week for videos, reading the manual and completing quizzes and the training will be completed in 14 weeks.

The 2020 Fall Master Gardener Online Training includes 13 modules — an introduction and 12 subject-areas. Module topics include: Botany; Soils and Fertilizers; Plant Diseases; Entomology; Integrated Pest Management; Annuals and Perennials; Trees, Shrubs and Woody Vines; Lawns; Small and Tree Fruits; Vegetables; Composting/Organic Gardening and Living with Wildlife.

Each module consists of several videos and an online quiz; there-

fore, a strong internet connection is highly recommended. Please note this training is not being offered in local Extension offices, but must be completed through use of a personal computer or other computer access. The registration cost for the program is $300, which includes the Master Gardener manual.

Registration for the Fall 2020 training will be open from Aug. 10 to Sept, 7, and the class will start on Jan. 28.

GRANVILLE — The LaSalle/ Putnam Educational Alliance for Special Education (L.E.A.S.E.) Cooperative and the Putnam County School District will offer a preschool screening on Monday, Aug. 3, and Tuesday, Aug. 4. The screenings will be held during school hours at the Putnam County Primary School, 400 E. Silverspoon Ave., Granville.

Putnam County children who will be 3 years old on or before Aug. 3 are eligible for screening. The screening will cover small and large muscle development, speech and language

development, hearing, vision, cognition development and social skills development. Parents who have other developmental concerns about their child can discuss those during the parent interview.

All Putnam County families with age-eligible preschoolers are encouraged to take advantage of this screening.

Results from the screening process, along with the parent interview, will be used to determine eligibility for the early childhood program at the primary school building in Granville. Parents are

also required to bring a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, proof of income (i.e. W-2 or the most recent last two pay stubs) and/or any other public assistance documents as a required step to complete the screening process to determine eligibility.

At this time, the preschool program (Preschool for All) is a state grant-funded preschool program from the Illinois Board of Education.

The program offers developmentally appropriate experiences for young children to strengthen their skills for success later on in school. The

program includes hands-on activities presented in a positive, encouraging environment. Each child brings his/her own experiences to the program, which also helps to enhance the program.

Parents interested in making an appointment should call the school at 815-882-2800 and choose option one.

Only one biological parent or legal guardian must be present at the screening with the child. Health checks will be done when entering the building and masks must be worn at this time.

Preregistration is required.

Renowned Princeton artist Kassabaum having a close-out sale

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS khieronymus@bcrnews.com Bart Kassabaum grew up in a big family in Granville. He was 10 when they got their first television, a black and white set, and his dad set ground rules for family viewing purposes.

“Dad didn’t want us fighting over the TV, so you got to pick one show to watch. That was your show and everybody else had to watch what was on that channel,” Kassabaum said.

The show he picked out was the “Jon Gnagy Learn to Draw Show.”

“It was on Sunday morning after I got home from church for a half hour. I loved it,” Kassabaum said.

His parents bought him the Jon Gnagy’s Learn to Draw book and he was hooked.

“My parents saw I had a knack,” Kassabaum said. “That was my tutor. I learned to take circles, triangles, squares and anything else and turn them into 3D objects.

Once you do that, you can draw anything.

Kassabaum, who will turn 73 later this month, turned that knack

into a lifetime art career, one that has filled the walls of hundreds of homes in and around Princeton with his trademark pieces of art.

The renowned Princeton artist said it’s time to hang up his paint

brush. He’s had health concerns and was in a car accident earlier this year and said he had to get things prioritized in his life.

He is in the midst of writing his second book titled, “Becoming Bureau County,” and wants to take time to get that project completed.

“I found out I can’t serve two masters,” he said. “I want to get (the book) done and hopefully be able to publish it this year.”

The first book he wrote in 2017 on Princeton native Richard Widmark, the Hollywood star, was a big success. Kassabaum has sold nearly 1,000 copies of “Becoming Richard Widmark” all over the world, including three in Japan the last month.

“I just thought it was a good time. I’m not getting any younger,” he said. “I have a house full of art and lifetime work of art. I want to see if I can sell it out. I just had to make some of these hard decisions. I don’t want to leave a mess for somebody else.

I don’t want my wife or kids say, ‘Geez, what are we going to do with dad’s stuff.’”

Kassabaum is holding a close-out sale and will lower prices to help make a sale, but said he won’t let his work go for “peanuts” at an auction.

“Otherwise, I’ll give it away to

people who have been customers, family and friends. Anything left over, I’m going to get rid of,” he said.

Kassabaum, who moved to Princeton in 1974, made his name doing duck stamps, on the urging of a Princeton youth, Kimball Bergin.

Kassabaum had just lost his job doing commercial work at Josten’s and his career outlook needed a boost.

“I would have never entered that contest had he not encouraged me,” Kassabaum said. “I had just lost my job at Josten’s. He said you oughta give it a try and enter that contest.

Low and behold, ‘Man, I won.’ And I won every time I entered it. It kind of made a name for me.

“The duck stamps legitimized my work. Even though I wasn’t a big duck hunter, I could appreciate their beauty.”

From there he branched out, picking up local work that has turned into a profession for nearly a half a century. The best part of it all has been all the people he’s met.

“My customers became friends,” he said.

COVID antibody testing now available at the health department

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Department is now offering COVID-19 antibody testing.

Anybody can be tested. The cost is $50. Those interested have to make an appointment at the health department to receive the test.

Laurie Geuther, assistant administrator for the health department, gave a brief update on COVID-19 testing to the Bureau County Board on July 14.

She said when the antibody testing became available, employees of the health department took the test because Administrator Hector Gomez tested positive for COVID in April.

She was happy to report all the tests came back negative.

She said at the end of this week, the health department will have performed about 300 COVID tests.

“We could open it up a lot more if we had more staff working,” she said.

The health department began drive-thru COVID testing on May 5.

The health department, which covers a three-county region, also has received a $2.4 million grant to assist

with COVID tracking.

“As we know, COVID is going to be around for a long time, and daily we’re talking to schools and communities and fielding a lot of comments from people about what’s being done and not being done,” she said. “This is a serious challenge every day, but I think under good leadership, we’ve done a really good job.”

The County Board on July 14 also voted to extend its proclamation declaring Bureau County a disaster area for coronavirus until Aug. 11.

The proclamation allows the county health department and Emergency Management Agency to coordinate county and municipal resources and response activities needed to protect the health and safety of citizens during an outbreak of the virus.

As of Monday afternoon, there have been 70 confirmed cases of COVID19 in Bureau, Putnam and Marshall counties. Bureau County has had 53 confirmed cases, Marshall County has had 15 confirmed cases and Putnam County has had two confirmed cases. There have been two deaths in Bureau County related to COVID-19.

All active cases are individuals recovering at home.

HENNEPIN — The Putnam County Rotary recently held its annual awards banquet and president’s installation event virtually.

It was a different look, for members, but proof that the ideals of community service and fellowship continue despite pandemic precautions.

Recognition was presented at the June 18 event to outgoing Club President Matt Hostetter with a commemorative desk gift, and a scrapbook commemorating the club’s many successful projects and programs during the past Rotary year.

Hostetter then passed the gavel, virtually, to incoming President Tina Dolder, who this year will face new challenges and new opportunities to help fellow residents locally and even globally in the months ahead.

District Governor Bobbi Burke also attended via Zoom, congratulating the club for its endurance and service, and Valentina Daza Gutierrez, who has returned to Colombia after her year in Puntam County as a Rotary Exchange Student, joined the Zoom meeting from Colombia on the occasion of her 18th birthday.

Special recognition was given to Rob and Jennifer Spratt, owners of Spratt’s Tap in Hennepin, for their volunteer efforts in providing lunches to students in need after COVID19 forced closure of the schools, supplementing the school lunch program which continued during the shutdown. The club presented the Spratts with the club’s thanks, a

commemorative plaque and an honorarium of $100 to Putnam County Community Center as their charity of choice. The Spratts said that with help and donations, they served or delivered a total of 2,730 lunches to students over a two-month period.

Their efforts truly epitomize Rotary’s ideal of “Service Above Self.”

Ten members were recognized for 100% participation, combining project participation and meeting attendance. Those honored were (alphabetically): Beth Acuncius, Brenda Bickerman, Debbie Buffington, Tina Dolder, Betty Johnson, Lisa Johnson, Brandy Sandberg, Adriane Shore, Scott Shore and Reed Wilson.

Rotary’s new Board of Directors, installed by Club Chaplain Ron McNeill, includes President Tina Dolder, Vice President Brenda Bickerman, Immediate Past President Matt Hostetter, Treasurer Brandy Sandberg, Secretary Scott Shore and additional Board Members Beth Acuncius, Debbie Buffington, Nancy Burress, Ron McNeill and Adriane Shore.

Though several year-end projects became victims of the pandemic, the club continued to meet weekly via Zoom, maintaining its ongoing projects, selecting and awarding several scholarship recipients, and successfully seeking a new Rotary District Grant for a project to launch next year benefiting Freedom House.

Club projects throughout the past year have included: sponsorship of summer and full-year exchange students, support of PCJH and PCHS Interact Clubs, co-sponsorship of IVCC’s new Rotaract Club, volunteer and financial support of the Marshall-Putnam Fair’s Senior Day in 2019, literacy projects including the Third Grade Dictionaries Proj-

ect, Rotary Readers in primary and grade school classrooms, help with Family Reading Night and the PCES Energy Fair, help with the PCHS Interact 9-11 Red Cross blood drive and Grange Halloween Parade and Party, sending of Christmas notes to all Putnam County seniors over age 80, financial assistance to numerous local charitable causes, sponsorship of Toys in the Pantry and assistance to Putnam County Pantry in distributing Christmas baskets, establishment of two “Little Free Pantries” in Standard and McNabb with help of a Rotary District grant, and awarding of several scholarship grants to worthy graduating seniors.

At Rotary’s weekly meetings held at LJ’s Café in Magnolia, the club had hosted a number of amazing program presenters as well, covering many subjects from economic development to Freedom House, local solar and wind power opportunities to Rotary’s “last mile” efforts to eradicate polio worldwide, news from IVCC and several programs

She was born on March 30, 1932, in Hopewell, IL to Virgil C. and Mildred L. (Thiel) Cross.

Surviving are her children, Deb (Jeff) Hecht of Germantown Hills, Jamie (Debbie) Vance and Pam (Chuck) Ellena, both of Granville, IL, and Victoria (John) Logan of Morton, IL; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Virgil “Sonny” Cross Jr. Dolores was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. She was an assembler at Bassicks in Spring Valley, IL. She enjoyed sewing and gardening and watching and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

French retrial on hold until Springfield answers petition TOM COLLINS TCollins@shawmedia.com The bow-and-arrow killing might be headed to the Illinois Supreme Court, which could mean no retrial this year for suspect Bradley French.

French, 27, formerly of Varna, is accused of first-degree murder after prosecutors said he fired a razor-tipped hunting arrow at Joshua Scaman of Ottawa, killing him. French previously was convicted of Scaman’s murder, but an appeals court reversed his conviction and sent the case back to La Salle County for new proceedings.

Friday, French’s case was brought before a judge, but Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr. was unable to set trial dates. French remains in the Illinois Department of Corrections – no prisoner transfers during the pandemic – and now the appellate prosecutor’s office thinks French’s conviction shouldn’t have been thrown out. The prosecutor’s office wants the state’s top court to consider the reversal before French stands for another jury trial.

French had told the Third District Appellate Court he should have been allowed to present a

self-defense claim to his jury, which Ryan would not permit. The appellate justices sided with French, ruling even if he wasn’t justified in using deadly force against Scaman, it should have been for the jury to decide.

The appellate prosecutor’s office thinks the justices got it wrong and Ryan was correct in denying French a self-defense claim. To that end, the appellate prosecutor filed a petition for leave to appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court.

The state’s top court would first decide whether to take the case – it doesn’t have to. If the Illinois Supreme Court takes it, oral arguments in Springfield and a ruling would be unlikely to happen until 2021.

Friday, Ryan set a Thursday, Sept. 17, status hearing for French. By that time, the Supreme Court should have at least decided whether French’s next hearing is in Springfield or in Ottawa.

Scaman died in 2015 of blood loss from a wound sustained in a parking lot at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby. French told police he and Scaman had quarreled in the hours leading up to their confrontation, to which French arrived armed with a compound bow.

French eventually admitted firing the arrow but said he did so in self-defense. He later was sentenced to 30 years in prison before the reversal earlier this year.

Most classes will be conducted online OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College President Jerry Corcoran outlined the college’s plan to safely deliver instruction this fall on July 9.

“Most of our fall semester classes will be online and blended except for career and technical programs, health professions and science labs,” Corcoran said at the monthly board meeting.

Daily temperature checks will be performed on everyone entering the college at the main entrance or east campus via three stand-alone temperature check units.

“No one will be admitted unless their temperature is below 100.4,” Corcoran said.

In addition, everyone is expected to wear a face covering. Employees may remove face coverings while in their individual offices, but are expected to don them when they depart.

Social-distancing guidelines will require students and employees to maintain at least six feet from each other. Where this is impossible, plexiglass walls will be installed to lessen the need for additional personal protective equipment (PPE).

To allow for social distancing, large rooms such as the Ralph Scriba Meeting Room (CTC 124125), the former Math lab (B-201), lecture hall D-225 and the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre will be used for classes.

Corcoran credited Dean of Workforce Development Shane Lange for leading a committee of administrators and faculty deliberating instructional challenges.

“Shane’s group found reasonable solutions that support the health and well-being of students and employees. Everyone who had something to say was heard,” said Corcoran.

He also noted, “Everything we are proposing is in step with Illinois Community College Board recommendations.”

In a related development, athletics has prepared a return-to-play plan allowing student athletes and teams to “engage in low-risk events” provided they adhere to social distancing, daily temperature testing by coaches, daily COVID-19 screening forms, sani-

tizing hands before practice and wearing face coverings.

In other business, trustees approved:

• Payment of $11,550 in annual dues to the Illinois Community College Trustees Association for legislative advocacy, statewide honors for faculty and alumni, trustee orientation and more.

• A one-year extension of the security contract with G4S Secure Solutions. G4S has provided IVCC security since 2011.

• Three separate contracts with Rehmann Technology Solutions totaling $53,292 including one year of anti-virus software for 35 servers, three years of physical space in Rehmann’s data center and three years of backup service.

• A Basic Dental Office Management certificate. The short-term, 8.5-hour credit program can be completed in the first semester of the dental assisting program and is tailored to students desiring employment in a dental office rather than chair-side dental assisting.

The Princeton Civil War Committee made the announcement on the event’s Facebook page over the weekend stating it could not logistically and safely hold the event in City County Park in Princeton with current state regulations put in place.

The announcement also states the event is “not done” and plans to return next year on the weekend of Oct. 9-10.

“We are all greatly disappointed that this decision had to be made but we will be back stronger and better than ever in 2021,” the post stated.

In the meantime, the committee will work on plans for next year. The group relies on 100% donations and appreciates the community’s continued support of the annual Civil War re-enactment.

Streator neighborhood tavern a trip back in time Stepping into Chalkey’s Tavern is like stepping back through time, and not in a kitschy way that was done artificially on purpose.

The walls are covered in advertisements that look like they’ve been there for decades, and, despite their age, the prices are still correct – a cheeseburger as large as it is on the sign for $5 is a steal.

The burger was delicious, and they’ve been at it for so long the rest of the food probably is, too. COVID-19 has put the clamps on a lot of these smaller places, so they’re limited to burgers.

There aren’t many frills to Chalkey’s. Anyone looking for french fries or onion rings should go elsewhere, but they have great chili and the burgers are cheap. What it lacks in menu size and frills, it makes up in charm.

Upon stepping through the door, customers will be greeted and asked whom they know or whom they’re related to. Streator is a small town, and Chalkey’s is a remnant of the old days, when every neighborhood had a bar that doubled as a limited corner store and restaurant.

Out of cigarettes? Chalkey’s still sells them. Need a bag of chips? They’ve got that, too.

The building is old. Like, really old. Imagine how old it must be, then add 30 years to that. This isn’t even the building’s first stop. It was moved from 913 Johnson St. in the 1920s, when a team of horses dragged it to 12th Street.

It’s looked about the same ever since. Photos published in old Times-Press newspapers from the 1950s could be colorized, and the place would look exactly the same today.

The same old freezer sits on the west wall, and the walls covered in decorations and even the cash register look like they date back to when the building first moved to its current home.

Everything adds up to create charm unlike anything found elsewhere. The

Takeout comes in a brown paper lunch bag, and if you want fries or onion rings, you’ll have to seek another place. atmosphere is something that needs to be experienced firsthand. Finding a restaurant that’s been in one family serving the same food for nearly 100 years is a rarity.

The city of Streator is situated on the Vermilion River. People in the mood for a relaxed summer’s drive can

explore more of Illinois and take advantage of a chance to check out an icon in the community that is easy on the pocketbook.

I travel a lot when I get enough time, and my favorite part is always stopping in the small towns nobody stops in to search for a tavern

or a bookstore that doesn’t see anyone outside of locals.

Those landmarks are what give small towns their personality. If Streator were to be used as an adjective, it’d be used to describe Chalkey’s.

IESA members to learn fate of fall sports

IESA schools will learn no later than July 24 if they will be able to participate in extra-curricular actives this fall.

The IESA Board of Directors met July 15 via a Zoom conference call to discuss the possibility/practicality of holding IESA activities in the 2020-21 school year and specifically the fall activities of golf, softball, baseball, cross-country and girls basketball. Also included on the call

was the executive director of the IHSA, Craig Anderson.

The IESA said it has sent several emails to the governor’s office and Illinois Department of Public Health seeking guidance regarding interscholastic activity participation and health and safety requirements. It said the answers it receives from these agencies will have a significant impact on the type of activity and/or format of the activity that it will able to offer during this school year.

To date, the IESA said it has not

received answers to its inquiries.

“Our goal is to return to play but as an education-based organization, we must always take into account the health, safety and well-being of students,” said Steve Endsley, IESA executive director. “Because of the ever-changing landscape, the IESA Board simply felt that until we receive answers, it would not be prudent at this time to make a decision to cancel fall activities knowing that a decision like that is devastating to the very students and schools IESA serves.”

Nowakowski signs with IVCC

St. Bede Academy graduate Ellyn Nowakowski recently signed a Letter of Intent to play softball at IVCC. While she did not get her senior season in, Nowakowski took part in the Lady Bruins’ third place finish at state last year.

IVWGI scheduled for Aug. 9 at Prophet Hills

Prophet Hills Golf Club will host the 2020 IVWGI, scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 9, in Prophetstown.

Kathy Potthoff of Spring Creek said the coronavirus pandemic remains a concern, however.

“We all want to be safe and keep others safe. Prophet Hills is preparing to host, but all is dependent on

future Illinois mandates,” she said.

Prophet Hills is hosting the Invitational for the first time since it joined the field in 2016. The standing rules require that clubs that are within a 60-mile radius of South Bluff in Peru, the original IVWGI host course, are invited to participate. The Prophetstown club meets this requirement on the northwest border.

Prophet Hills has been quite successful during its four-year stint, taking home team titles in its first two years (2016, 2017). Many PH golfers have also won individual class awards.

Other active participating clubs are Seneca’s Deer Park (Oglesby), Edgewood Park (McNabb), Hidden Lake (Sheffield), Mendota Golf Club, Morris Country Club, Senica’s Oak Ridge (LaSalle), Spring Creek (Spring Valley) and Wyaton Hills (Princeton).

Spring Creek is the defending team champion. Cheri Russell of Morris won her second title in four years and third in nine.

Entry fee is $65, which includes practice round and tournament free fees, a tournament shared cart,

lunch, appetizers and awards.

There will be a championship, A, B and C flights with divisions for gross team, net team, senior and super senior. Reservations need to be made by Aug. 1.

Tee times for practice rounds may be made by calling the pro shop at 815-537-5226.

Waiting for the next Golden opportunity Kaylee Golden was ready to go bat in her third year as director of marketing and community relations for the Quad City River Bandits.

She spent nearly every waking moment since the end of last year’s season planning for the 2020 season.

Then she got thrown a curve ball in May, falling victim of the many layoffs that hit the sports industry hard at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement came out of left field.

“Our ownership group when this whole thing happened had been reiterating there wouldn’t be layoffs, etc, etc.,” she said. “When it happened, it was very, very unexpected. It hit me like a ton of bricks.

“I had seen a lot of people in the sports industry lose their job. I’m 100 percent not alone in the sports industry or country, obviously. But it was still kind of a hard thing to accept.”

Golden, a 2014 Hall High School grad, hurt for all the people in minor league baseball, especially with the contraction talks that could lead to the elimination of many teams.

“This could have been their last season and they didn’t get that goodbye like they were hoping

they would,” she said.

Golden has returned home to Hollowayville to regroup and weigh her options, waiting for that next Golden opportunity. With a degree in communications and marketing from St. Ambrose University, she would like to stay in the sports industry, but knows that won’t come easy.

“I don’t think the sports industry will even be hiring, for at least a year or longer,” said Golden, who interned with the River Bandits the summer before her senior year at St. Ambrose. “It even got worse this past week with Minor League Baseball cancelling its season and another wave of layoffs.

“I think it will get worse before it gets better.

You know, I’ll see what I can find from there. If I don’t get back in that world, I enjoyed my time in it. Down the road, it would still be something I’d be interested in doing.”

The job with the River Bandits was a lot of fun, she said, while it lasted.

“It was a ridiculous amount of hours, but I enjoyed it a lot,” she said. “This season would have been kind of redemption season after we had the flood of last year and lost quarter of our season or more. It hit the team hard, because we lost so much revenue last year.

“But it was fun. I wouldn’t change anything.

Obviously I would still love to have my job. At the end of the day, it was a great experience and I learned a lot.”

Golden has almost gone through withdrawals having put so much time in to her job.

“Losing your job is something no one ever teaches you about,” she said. “I did all the social media stuff, so there’s no such thing as a day off.

It’s like your whole life revolves around it and to have to change that so quickly was kind of hard.

So it’s kind of a muscle memory I’m still trying to break.

“You never know how to handle that kind of stuff, but it’s a learning experience. And I think it helps you grow.”

Golden has found her new puppy, Jo Jo, an 11-week-old chocolate female lab, to be a nice therapy dog.

“She definitely helps. She keeps me busy,” said Golden, who is lined up to return to Hall as an assistant volleyball coach this fall under new head coach Darcy Earley, her former teacher and coach.

‘One way or another, it’s going to happen in Ladd’ KEVIN CHLUM kchlum@shawmedia.com LADD — Father Ron Margherio got involved in Habitat for Humanity through his role at St. Bede Academy helping coordinate service projects.

He volunteered and regularly brought students to Habitat’s current project in Ottawa.

Margherio also invited his brother, Dave, to volunteer.

After the brothers saw the impact of Habitat in Ottawa, they wanted to bring the organization to their hometown of Ladd.

The brothers organized a meeting to generate community interest, and soon fundraising began.

The community’s efforts caught the attention of the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity of LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam Counties.

On Sunday at Memorial Park in Ladd, Sally M. Van Cura, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam Counties, announced Ladd would be the site of the organization’s next project.

“I think it means community involvement,” Dave Margherio said. “A few years back we lost our church, so we lost a little bit of our togetherness. I’ve had a lot of people talk to me already, and they really want to get involved with the project. The whole community — all 1,300 people — will get involved.

“I’m looking forward to seeing something physical rise from the ground in our little town.”

With the project now official, all that’s needed is a lot.

A portion of Sunday’s meeting was spent discussing the best way to acquire a lot so the project can move forward.

Anyone in Ladd willing to donate or sell a lot is asked to call the Habitat office at 815-434-2041.

“It always comes back to the lot,” Dave Margherio said during the meeting. “We’ve been pursuing it.

I think some people are nervous about what kind of build it will be.

They think it’s low-income housing.

It’s going to be a nice house.

“One way or another, it’s going to happen in Ladd. It it’s not donated, we’ll pursue paying.”

Board member Tom Pigati said the biggest misconception is the home is simply given away. He stressed the

“I think there’s some ignorance about what kind of house it will be,” Father Ron Margherio said. “Our job right now is to be PR people. We have to show them pictures [of other Habitat homes] and talk about what we’re looking for and what it can do for the community.”

Aside from acquiring the lot, the Ladd project is in good shape with plenty of community involvement, a strong fundraising effort that already has raised nearly $14,000 and pledges to donate a variety of equipment and services for the build, including rental equipment, landscaping, excavating, electric, floors and a furnace.

That early support is what drew the local Habitat organization to Ladd.

“It was great. During a volunteer (gathering), the two brothers said, ‘We want this for our town,’ ” Van Cura said. “They set up a meeting for me to talk to the community, and everybody showed up. We put out maybe 30 chairs and we kept adding chairs. I started talking about Habitat and the build and what it means to the community, and while I was talking people kept raising

their hand saying they wanted to be involved. You don’t get that from communities. This is a close-knit community. They started their own fundraiser called Club Ladd 89. In order to be a member, you had to donate $89. So far it’s raised over $13,000. Usually communities don’t raise funds. We have to do fundraisers. They stepped forward because they wanted it in their town.”

Once the lot is secured, the process will begin to find a family. The family will be someone from Bureau

County.

After selecting the family, the plan for the house will be formulated.

A committee has been formed that will meet the third Tuesday of every month starting July 21.

“I’m real excited to make Ladd our next build,” Van Cura said. “Of course, we need to get that lot. It’s a great community, and they’ll be working very closely with Habitat for this build. Hopefully, we’ll get this done quickly to give a family a home ownership opportunity.”
