Sally Sue’s Coffee brews more success Home-grown business expands into LaSalle BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com MAGNOLIA — Tyler Reaska, a self-taught coffee roaster and owner of the wildly successful Sally Sue’s Coffee, has not only brought new business to his hometown of Magnolia, but is also expanding his enterprise into LaSalle, and possible well beyond the Illinois Valley. A new Sally Sue’s Cafe is scheduled to open at 728 First St., in LaSalle, on July 27. Reaska is also expanding his roasting operation in Magnolia with the addition of a 1,200- squarefoot warehouse. “We were at five employees, but we’ve added two here in Magnolia, and with the opening of the LaSalle location, we’ll have 12 total. With the way things are going, I’m expecting to need 15 by the end of the year, and it could even be up to 20,” he said. On Saturday, July 6, Reaska was celebrating not only his new LaSal-

le location, but also the addition of a newly constructed patio in Magnolia. Customers can now either enjoy their coffee and food in the comfortable Tyler indoor seating area, Reaska or under a shady umbrella when the weather is pleasant. After successfully providing organic, fair trade coffee to major regional retailers such as Hy-Vee, Schnuck’s, Green Top Grocery, Naturally Yours Grocery, Woodman’s, Valli Produce, Fresh Thyme, Tony’s Fresh Market, Brookhaven Market Place, as well as Illinois Valley establishments such as Bean Box, Uptown Grill and Rawfully Yours, Sally Sue’s customer list continues to grow. “We’ve added more Hy-Vee’s, a handful of Sullivan’s, and will possibly be adding Menard’s,” Reaska said. Sally Sue’s may also soon be available on the East Coast. Reaska said a broker for 1,000 locations in that region is interested in helping to greatly expand Sally

Sue’s customer base. “If that happens, I’ll be very happy. At that point, I might add a few more stores, but that’s pretty much it, I’m set. I’d be content and will get to play some more golf,” he said. “It’s been crazy to keep up with, but none of this would have happened without Tyler. He’s the man of persistence,” Emily Wingate, director of operations and Reaska’s fiancee, said as she served a line of customers. Reaska is also interested in going beyond normal fair trade practices. A premium is already paid for the raw coffee beans used by Sally Sue’s, but that premium goes to the farmers, not the workers. He said he’s hoping to take a trip to the source in the future in order to rectify that. “I’d like to be able to say I’ll buy the whole crop this year if the farmer will agree to pay their workers a certain amount,” he said. More students expected to enroll in 2020 OGLESBY — During Illinois Valley Community College’s July board meeting, it was learned the Transfer Academy successfully launched this summer at Ottawa Center as students banked college credit while still in high school. There are 22 Transfer Academy students enrolled this summer at Ottawa Center from Serena High

School, Marquette Academy and Henry-Senachwine. Streator and LaSalle-Peru High School students are expected to enroll in 2020. “The academy positions students for seamless transfer to a university,” Mark Grzybowski, IVCC vice president for Student Services, said. “The academy allows high school students to be released each afternoon to attend two courses at Ottawa Center, or on main campus,” Quintin Overocker, director of Admissions, reported.

Like all dual-credit students, Transfer Academy enrollees receive a 25 percent discount, and those qualifying for free and reduced lunches pay only a $5 registration fee. Putnam County residents among those honored during D.C. trip BY JERRY LINDSEY and DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com WASHINGTON, D.C. — When Washington, D.C., becomes a subject of the conversation, one often thinks of the red, white and blue, and the patriotic red blood flows a little prouder. The 48th Honor Flight of the Quad Cities recently landed in the nation’s capital, and its guests, including several Putnam County veterans, spent the day adding color to the history of the nation. Nine local veterans were honored: Douglas Ossola, Bill Haage, Jerry Masini, Gary Borri, Larry Botoletto, Bob Hockings, David Thompson, Robert Borri and Phil Euler. Masini, who served with Armed Forces Radio in Saigon from 1962 to 1963, was appreciative of all the local support he and his fellow veterans received. He said the trip provided camaraderie and was a catharsis for resolution and closure, as well as being a lot of fun. He encourages everyone who has served to make the trip. “I have heartfelt thankfulness for the attitude of gratitude of all who greeted us at the airport in Moline, and Washington, D.C.,” Masini stated in an email interview. “I’m also thankful for all of the

• HONOR FLIGHT Continued from Page 4 The Honor Flight program, funded through donations, sends World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans on a free one-day trip to D.C. to explore war memorials and other attractions. Masini said his favorite parts of the flight were the trips to the Vietnam Wall and the aeronautical museum. The exposure the Honor Flights have created is something to be admired and something that those who haven’t made the flight may not be aware of. Every veteran was proudly clothed in a bright yellow T-shirt ador ned on the back with the words “If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in English, thank a veteran.” Accompanying the veterans were volunteer guardians wearing blue shirts with an identical imprint. The attention this group musters throughout the day in Washington, D.C., is best appreciated by the multiple times tourists stop a member and request to photograph the back of the shirt.

The city also has to adjust to the attention the buses receive throughout the day because they are escor ted throughout the national attractions by a police escort that gives the veterans a non-stop journey to their next venue.

Signs of appreciation Noting that sirens and flashing lights may seem like a constant occurrence to the locals, they send a major acknowledgement of appreciation to the touring vets aboard. The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is always a special time of patriotic appreciation for any visitor, but the veterans were notified that the guard on duty will make a special extra tap of his heel during his routine, an offering of appreciation for their service. This special recognition offered an element to the day few others can match because it comes from another member of the service whom they respect so highly. Many small tokens of recognition were offered to the veterans

throughout the day, such as individuals asking to hug a veteran, or a middle-schooler asking to shake a veteran’s hand while saying “Thanks.” Another major impact involving the Midwest veterans was the reception awarded to the Honor Flight participants upon their arrival at Dulles International Airport. Entering the airport, they were immediately greeted with loud cheers, waving flags, thank-you signs and extended handshakes by

locals who wanted to welcome and show their appreciation for the services and sacrifices these veterans had made. The halls were lined with the appreciative welcomes, and it continued throughout the walk through the terminal, concluding as the group loaded onto the waiting buses to begin the day. A similar greeting is always present when Honor Flights return to the Quad Cities International Airport, but to receive it from strangers from halfway across the nation is truly special. The long day finally ended for the group of veterans and guardians, with all owning a renewed appreciation for the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, and all taking home a feeling that the wearers of the yellow and blue shirts from the Midwest definitely added some color to the nation’s capital, and the patriotic red, white and blue that these men and women had served to protect.

WAYNE GRASSER BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — Wayne E. Grasser, 94, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 6, 2019, in Bonita Springs, Fla. He was born in Putnam County. He was baptized and was married in Immaculate Conception Church in Mount Palatine. He farmed for 10 years, then was employed by Ford Motor Co. from 1956 to 1987. He then resided in Florida for 32 years. Surviving are three children, Pat Minks of Palm City, Fla., Rita Grasser (John Nepywoda) of Naperville and Steve (Jill) Grasser of Monee; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Rita Hofer of Hennepin; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Judd of Hennepin and Dean Lechner of Rochelle.

Her favorite motto was “every day is a good day, some are just better than others.” Survivors include her daughter, Jeanne (Gary) Eich of Serena; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lee Ann (late Richard) Weddell; and two sisters, Kathryn Selbrede of Peru and Betty Dzierzynski of Spring Valley. HENNEPIN — Hazel M. Weddell, 88, a resident of the LaSalle County Nursing Home, formerly of Hennepin, passed away Monday, July 8, 2019, at the LaSalle County Nursing Home. Hazel was born Sept. 18, 1930, in Granville to Charles and Velma (Porter) Galiher. She married Richard C. Weddell Sr. Feb. 19, 1949, in Magnolia. Richard was the love of her life. They were married for 67 years before his passing in April of 2017. Hazel attended McNabb Grade School and graduated from Magnolia Swaney High School in 1948. She worked in the OB department at Perry Memorial in Princeton, in the research department at Moews Seed Co. in Granville and at Illinois Valley Community Hospital before she retired. She was a member of the Hennepin United Methodist Church, where she was active in many duties, including singing in the choir. Hazel was an EMT with the Hennepin Ambulance Service for several years. She was also an active member of the American Legion and was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award in 2012 by the village of Hennepin. Hazel enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening and early morning walks.

Multiple charges Billy R. Tillotson, 50, of Bureau,was charged by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office with two counts of failure to signal, driving revoked, and fleeing and eluding at 8:37 a.m. July 9. Tillotson’s vehicle was observed at Old Route 26 and Route 26 in Hennepin, and a deputy attempted to stop the vehicle. Tillotson failed to stop for the deputy and proceeded onto Interstate 180, and then onto Pike Road in Bureau County. Tillotson’s vehicle finally stopped at a residence in Bureau where he was apprehended. Tillotson was observed discarding items during the brief pursuit. Items alleged to have been discarded by Tillotson were recovered along Pike Road. These items will be sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab for further processing. Tillotson was released on a notice to appear. More charges may be filed at a later date. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by members of Tri-DENT, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and the DePue Police Department. Deer accidents At 5:15 a.m. on July 3, Kristen L. Trone, 46, of McNabb struck a deer on Route 26 in Hennepin Township. No injuries were

No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued. Accident At 9:41 p.m. on July 6, a vehicle driven by Brycen D. Kellett, 19, of Peru crossed into oncoming traffic on East 1250th Street in Granville Township and struck a vehicle driven by Lauren A. Calkins, 34, of Granville. No injuries were reported. Kellett was issued a traffic citation for improper lane usage. Warrant arrest At 6 p.m. on July 11, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office arrested Richard E. Farrell, 42, of Streator on a LaSalle County failure-to-appear warrant for traffic violations following a traffic stop on Route 89 in Granville Township. Farrell was also charged with no valid driver’s license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Farrell posted bond and was released.

Preschool screenings on Aug. 5 GRANVILLE — The LaSalle/Putnam County Educational Alliance for Special Education (LEASE) Cooperative and the Putnam County School District will offer a preschool screening on Monday, Aug. 5. The screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Putnam County Primary School in Granville. A parent must accompany their child to the screening. Putnam County children who will be 3 years old on or before Aug. 5 are eligible for screening for fall enrollment. If a child turns 3 after this date, they will need to be screened at a different location after their third birthday. The screening will cover small and large muscle development, speech, language, hearing, vision, cognition and social skills. Parents who have other developmental concerns about their child can discuss those during the par-

ent interview. All Putnam County families with age-eligible preschoolers are encouraged to take advantage of this screening. The results of the screening will be used to determine eligibility for the early childhood program at PCPS. Students not eligible will be placed on a waiting list. The preschool program (Preschool for All) is a state-funded grant program from the Illinois State Board of Education, and all rules and regulations are followed for the grant support. The preschool program offers developmentally appropriate experiences for young children to strengthen their skills for success later on in school. These hardworking, dedicated volunteers are being recognized for preserving and, frankly, saving the home and workshop of renowned decoy carver Charles Perdew and his wife Edna.” Gillfillan concluded, “For all of their labor and love for this historic place, the Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution are privileged to present this Historic Preservation Recognition Award to the Charles Perdew Museum Association Board of Directors.” The certificate is on display at the Perdew Museum, located at 914 Front St. in Henry. Klein family announces seventh annual Larry Klein Memorial Ride & Benefit HENRY — The seventh annual Larry Klein Memory Ride and Benefit will be Saturday, Aug. 10. This year, all proceeds will be directed to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. For information on the organization, visit afsp.org. A memory ride will begin at 11 a.m., with signup beginning at 10 a.m. at Shandy’s Pub & Grub in Henry. The cost is $15 per participant, which includes a meal ticket. All vehicles are welcome. A bus has also been reserved for those who don’t want to drive. To reserve a seat, contact Tracy Wright at 309-363-8811. The first stop will be Hawg House Saloon in Princeton, followed by Dick’s Tap in Ladd, Jamie’s OutPost Parlor in Utica, Clover Club in Mark and Zoomiez on the Water in Lacon. The ride will end

at Shandy’s, with the last bike/vehicle in by 5 p.m. Everyone who preregisters will be entered in a drawing for $50 cash. This benefit will be held “rain or shine” and is open to the public. A meal will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m. with BBQ pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad and coleslaw, and the cost is $10 for those who did not participate in the ride. Rounding out the event will be a DJ/karaoke, door prizes, a 50/50 drawing and a huge raffle with a little something for everyone. Donations are coming in from friends, family and area businesses. Registration is being taken at Shandy’s now until the ride or forms can be downloaded from the Facebook event

page, Larry Klien Memory Ride & Benefit. T-shirts this year are available on a pre-order, pre-pay basis only, and the deadline is Wednesday, July 17. For those unable to participate in the actual event, monetary donations can be made, with checks payable to AFSP, and mailed to: Tracy Wright, 110 S. Selby Ave., Ladd, IL 61329.
