Secretary of State extends expiration dates to Nov. 1 Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced expiration dates for driver’s licenses and ID cards as well as license plate stickers have been extended an additional month — from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1.

The new Nov. 1 extension also includes those who have July, August and September expiration dates.

Expired documents will remain valid until Nov. 1 so customers will not have to immediately visit Driver Services facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic or the recent heat wave.

“Extending expiration dates until Nov. 1 means people with an expired driver’s license, ID card or license plate sticker do not need to rush into a Driver Services facility immediately,” White said. “During this current heat wave, I would suggest residents consider delaying their visit to a facility. But if you must visit a facility, please come prepared to wait outside due to social distancing, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time.”

White continues to urge the public to consider using online services when possible instead of visiting a facility in

person because of heavy customer volume. Customers who can conduct business online can go to www.cyberdriveillinois.com to take advantage of online services such as renewing license plate stickers from their own home. People who conduct online transactions will avoid waiting in line at a facility.

White noted that online transactions continue to flourish, with June 2020 seeing an increase of 110% in online license plate sticker renewals when compared to June 2019.

Through July 31, Driver Services facilities are serving only new drivers, customers with expired driver’s licenses or ID cards and vehicle transactions.

Face masks are required.

In addition, customers who must visit a facility to renew their driver’s licenses or ID cards are encouraged to first use the preregistration application online, which will speed up their transaction at the facility.

Gov. JB Pritzker extended the Disaster Proclamation an additional month, which in turn extended the expiration for driver’s licenses, ID cards and vehicle registration stickers.

In response to the prevention of the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Putnam County Community Center is closed to the public until further notice.

Two projects collecting data on location

BY GOLDIE RAPP Shaw Media HENNEPIN — The former LTV and ArcelorMittal rolled-steel plant in Hennepin is considered one of the “most attractive sites” in the state of Illinois when it comes to companies looking to relocate.

“It’s received a lot of attention just in the short time I’ve been in the area,” said Mike Kirchhoff, CEO and president of North Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation, who was hired to the position last August.

What makes it attractive?

According to Kirchhoff, it’s access to the Illinois River, Interstate 180 and railroad; it’s size, which consists of 853-acres of land; it’s 80-megawatt substation; water and sewer hookups ready-to-go; it’s proximity to Chicago and the concrete foundation that was left onsite following demolition of the former mill.

The site of the former steel mill in Hennepin has been a finalist many times among businesses looking to relocate. The regional economic development director is optimistic the site could be purchased within the next five years.

“It says a lot that this site becomes one of the finalist frequently. It’s in indication of its appeal,” he said. “Ultimately, I think we’re going to be very surprised five years looking back.

Despite setbacks with COVID-19, Kirchhoff is staying optimistic about the trends that may come post pandemic. He said there’s been predictions about companies reshoring. Also, there’s a lot of talk about rural areas being well-positioned

Kirchhoff said the millennial generation is also at a point where they’re having children and a home with a yard is becoming more attractive than a city loft. Trends show more millennials moving out of the city and heading toward quieter areas within Central Illinois.

“These are co-factors in companies making site locations,” he said. “We’re ideally positioned to capitalize on those conditions.”

“It’s a quicker build, a cheaper build,” said Kirchhoff, referring to the foundation already set in place. “It’s a site that’s ready to go and everybody is looking for a site that’s ready to go. The attributes of this site are substantial. They put it a head and shoulders above others.”

There’s been interest from companies from all over the U.S., and even some foreign interest.

Currently, there are a couple projects collecting data at the location.

“We’ve talked to several companies who have active projects in advanced chemicals in the recycling space and advanced energy projects,” Kirchhoff said.

But being attractive doesn’t mean it’s going to sell overnight. The site has been on the market for years.

Kirchhoff said purchases of this size don’t happen overnight. For a company to re-locate, it could end up costing billions of dollars. Plus, companies must have definite answers on two things before they commit to relocating. One, it must minimize risk. Two, it must maximize profitability.

“You put yourself in the shoes of the person in the company whose tasked with making that decision. Let’s say you’re spending a half-billion dollars ... It could be a career-ending decision,” Kirchhoff said. “Because of the amount of money involved in these projects, and because of the risk to an individual’s reputation of career, these are things that take a long time.”

Kirchhoff said he’s worked on projects that have taken up to four years to complete.

John was born on July 6, 1935, in Spring Valley to James and Emily (Young) Petersen.

He graduated from Hennepin High School. John served in the United States Army. He, along with his brother, operated Ayr Haven Dairy Farm and was a self-employed farmer.

John was a member of Hennepin United Methodist Church. He served as the Hennepin Township Supervisor for 44 years. John also served on the River Conservatory Board.

He was an avid Corvette enthusiast and was an owner of 16 Corvettes over the years. He also set up model trains and created a town.

Survivors include two brothers, Larry (Ruth) Petersen of Toluca and Jim (Sharon) Petersen of Hennepin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and close friend Paula.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Putnam County Community Center or donor’s choice.

Pallbearers were Matthew Wink, Bradley Wink, Brian Biagi, Rob Urnikis, Lyle Litherland and Jon Clausen.

MAGNOLIA — William “Bill” Nels Miller, 54, of Magnolia passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2020, at St. Margaret’s Hospital, Spring Valley.

There will be a private graveside service.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Dysartt-Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements.

Bill was born on April 30, 1966, in Peoria to Harry William and Doris (Mowers) Miller. He graduated from Putnam County High School.

Bill served in the United States Marine Corps.

He worked at Metatec and he was also a truck driver and did over the road transports.

Survivors include his mother, Doris Carlson of Magnolia; one son, William LeRoy Miller of LaSalle; one daughter, Terra Jean Miller of Magnolia; one stepson, Terry Walker of LaSalle; one sister, Jane Wright of Rock Island; two stepsisters, Monica Carlson and Sherie Price; nephews, Dalton Schultz of Lincoln, Nebraska; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Kathy Jackson of Magnolia was eastbound on North 17th Road, one-quarter mile west of Route 251. John Munson of Tonica was cutting grass on the north side of the road. Munson crossed the westbound lane and struck Jackson in the eastbound lane. No citations were issued at the time. No injures were reported.

Cruise-in attracts cars from all over Two more car shows planned in July

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS khieronymus@bcrnews.com More than 50 cars from as far away as Joliet, Beloit, Rockford, Tinley Park, Morton and Quad Cities attended the Fourth of July car cruise-in north of Dover.

Chuck Reynolds of Peru was the Best Street Rod winner with his 1931 Ford Street Rod. Event host Scott Bickett said proceeds went to offset costs for the 16th annual toy run to be held Sunday, Oct. 18, at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton.

There are two more car shows coming up in July.

The next show will be Saturday, July 18, at Psycho Silo Saloon, located near the intersection of Routes 6 and 40 in Langley. Showtimes will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Trophies will be presented for trucks, hot rods, classics, muscle cars, modern, Silo pick, Best of Show - Original and Best of Show - Modified.

Rodeo Drive will provide live music on the Silo stage from 1 to 5 p.m.

COVID UPDATE

Four Bureau County cases reported since July 10 Since July 10, four additional Bureau County cases of COVID19 have been reported by the Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Department.

One male in his 40s and three females, one in her 20s, the second in her 30s and the third in her 50s, tested positive for virus. All individuals are recovering at home.

Public health officials are investigating the cases and are working to identify individuals who were in contact with the individuals.

Since March 23, there have now been 52 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the three-county region. Bureau County has had 39 confirmed cases, Marshall County has had 12 confirmed cases and Putnam County has had one confirmed case.

BY KIM SHUTE kshute@shawmedia.com BUREAU — A fire thought to have started from a motel room air conditioner has leveled Jonesy’s Ranch House in Bureau Junction.

Firefighters were called to the bar/restaurant and motel about 11:45 a.m. Friday after manager Maricel Delizo said fire was coming from room 110 of the motel, the last room on the upper floor. Delizo said they been to the room multiple times to respond to a complaint about the unit not working and within the hour, the room was on fire.

Mike Jones, who has owned the business for 10 years, said all 17 rooms of the two-story motel were filled Thursday when out-of-state workers, who arrived for a long-term rental. “They lost everything,� he said of the renters. “There’s a guy that doesn’t even have clothes for his baby now.�

Delizo said employees were able to get all occupants and pets out of the buildings uninjured.

By 1:30 p.m., area fire departments from Amboy, Neponset, Wyanet, Troy Grove and Henry were still sending tankers to the scene.

Other responding departments included Bureau, DePue, Princeton, Spring Valley, Manlius, Peru Ambulance, Granville/Hennepin and Putnam County EMS, among others.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS EXTENSION

The 10-acre University of Illinois Extension and Illinois Valley Community College ag research and demonstration plot was planted to soybean in 2020.

Research and demonstration projects include planting population rates and treated vs. untreated soybean seed. Another component included tillage, evaluating no-till against a one pass vertical-till operation.

Daryle Wragge, extension agriculture program coordinator said, “Our seed this year was graciously donated by Lukach Pioneer.”

The research and demonstration plot is a partnership project between the University of Illinois Extension, the Illinois Valley Community College Agricultural Department (Willard Mott and Kathryn Seebruck) and Mr. Luke Holly, IVCC farming tenant.

Again in 2020, weather factored in the delayed fieldwork and planting.

Case IH provided a new variable tillage tool and an experimental 12-row 30-inch planter to assist in the research project.

The Agricultural Equipment Company is also doing extensive research within the plot in the way of mechanical design of seed placement. All of this research will be monitored throughout the grow-

IVCC students earn scholarships to NIU Illinois Valley Community College graduates Devanshi Patel of LaSalle and Jacob Ritko of Streator earned the full-tuition William and Diane Taylor Scholarships to Northern Illinois University.

Patel won the Taylor STEM scholarship, and Ritko earned the accountancy award.

Each scholarship is worth more than $25,000 for the students’ junior and senior years at NIU. Patel, who plans to attend medical school and become a physician, was IVCC’s 2020 Frederick W. Matthiessen Award winner, 2020 Phi Theta Kappa All-Illinois Academic Team member, former PTK president, 2019 IVCC Foundation co-21st Century Scholar, peer tutor and a former emergency room volunteer at IVCH. Ritko, who plans to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting before taking the CPA exam, served as

Illinois Valley League comes to Spring Creek

The Illinois Valley High School Summer Golf League will come to Spring Creek Golf Course in Spring Valley Wednesday.

Tee off times are 8 a.m.

Sponsor Mason Kimberly, the head coach at Hall, said the purpose of the league is to provide an opportunity for all area high school golfers to play in several competitive rounds of golf throughout the summer “in a relaxed and casual environment.”

The league is open to all high school boys and girls. League fees are $70, which includes green fees for all courses, trophies, prizes and season-ending pizza party.

Boys and girls divisions will be split into flights based on 2019 high school scoring averages.

Freshmen and first-year players will be flighted based on scores from first three rounds.

The first league date was July 1, at Edgewood Park Golf Club in McNabb.

Remaining league dates are (8 a.m. tee times):

• July 20 at Wyaton Hills Golf Course in Prince­ ton.

• July 22 at Mendota Golf Club.

• July 29 at Senica’s Deer Park Golf Club in Oglesby.

Holes-in-one at Spring Creek It may have been a late start to the golf season, but golfers at Spring Creek Golf Course are making up for lost time.

There have been four holes-in-one since the Spring Valley course was allowed to reopen during the coronavirus shutdown, two in consecutive days.

The latest came Wednesday when Jerry Joiner of Spring Valley aced the 132-yard, No. 7 hole, using a pitching wedge. His hole-in-one was witnessed by Kim Joiner, Steven Brust and Jenna Parente.

The first hole-in-one came on May 25 when Tyler Dobrich aced the 132-yard, No. 7 hole with his pitching wedge. Grandpa Tom Dobrich witnessed the shot.

On June 11, Dave Enbom sank a hole-in-one on

the 151-yard, No. 3 hole using his 8 iron. It was witnessed by his Princeton entourage of Mike Vrana, Jeff Hunt and Egan Hicks.

The very next day, Connie Banks aced the No. 3 hole from the red tees (135 yards) with her 9 wood while golfing with her husband, Phil, and Bernadette and Dave Savitch.

SVWC outing The Spring Valley Walleye Club will host its 26th annual golf outing on Aug 8 at Spring Creek Golf Course in Spring Valley.

The 4-man best ball scramble will have a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Cost is $75 per golfer, including golf, cart, fried walleye lunch and beverages.

All proceeds will benefit the club’s Illinois River fish stocking program.

Golfers do not have to be club members to participate.

IHSA revises Phase 4 Return to Play guidelines

Less than a week after announcing its Phase 4 Return To Play Guidelines, the IHSA sent revised guidelines to schools Thursday amid reports of athletes testing positive for COVID-19, including prohibiting contact drills and any physical contact among athletes.

This is a significant change from the initial Phase 4 guidelines that were approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health and released Friday. Teams were allowed to begin practices under the

Phase 4 guidelines Monday.

Additional changes include a requirement that all persons must always wear masks. The IHSA clarified later Thursday that athletes are not required to wear masks outside if socially distanced.

The IHSA also clarified that there must be a strict 50-person limit to any indoor activities.

The revisions will mean big changes for programs that had either already started or had scheduled summer camps in the coming weeks.

The IHSA released a brief statement Thursday afternoon citing “an increase in positive cases of COVID-

19 among high school teams around the state” as the reason for the revisions.

“Due to an increase in positive cases of COVID-19 among high school teams around the state, the Illinois High School Association and Illinois Department of Public Health are jointly collaborating to modify the IHSA’s Phase 4 Return To Play Guidelines,” according to the statement.

“The modifications place greater restrictions on coaches and student-athletes in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Important changes include limiting physical contact and an increased usage of

masks. The former restricts schools from conducting contests against other schools in most sports, including 7-on-7 in football.

“The IHSA is working with IDPH to update the guidelines, and will send to its membership, the media, and post on the web as soon as they are approved.”

Kewanee mourns death of basketball coach

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS khieronymus@bcrnews.com Kewanee High School and its boys basketball program suffered a tragic loss off the court.

Shaune Lewis, who has been the Boilermakers head coach since 2015, died the evening of July 2 due to what has been described as a “medical incident” while racing in a heat race at the Davenport Speedway. He was 47.

Many tributes from around the Kewanee community and the Three Rivers Conference were posted on Twitter as the news of Lewis’ death spread.

A 1991 graduate and former player at Kewanee, Lewis took great pride in Boilermakers basketball and was well versed in its history.

“He could talk Kewanee basketball for hours on end, and you already enjoyed listening to him, too,” Henegar said.

New girls coach at IVC According to the Peoria Journal Star, Alisha Morrow has been named the new Chillicothe IVC head girls basketball coach. She previously coached at Washington Central Grade School.

She becomes the fifth IVC coach in eight years. The Lady Ghosts have stumbled since longtime coach Paul Mercer (344-217 in 21 years) retired in 2012, posting a

44-175 record.

Reade passes Legendary football coach Bob Reade, who coached championship football teams at Geneseo High School and Augustana College, has died at the age of 87. He led Geneseo to three state championships in 1976-78, posting a 146-21-4 record.

At Augie, he went 146-23-1 with four straight NCAA D-III titles (1983-86).
