Marshall-Putnam Fair kicks off historic celebration

HENRY — The 100th annual Marshall-Putnam Fair kicks off Wednesday, July 14.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday. The Fair Board directors gathered at the entrance of the fairgrounds. President Robert J. Stadel did a welcoming speech, followed by a welcome from the newly crowned 2021 Marshall-Putnam Fair royalty.

Rod Rumbold, chairman of the 100th Celebration Committee, conducted a presentation of the 2021 Fair Board. There was also a recognition of former board members, past and present superintendents, past and present event chairmen, as well as, volunteers.

The winners of the fair essay contest were announced and the winning essays were read to the public.

One of the Budweiser Clydesdales-

then led a parade of off-road vehicles and pedestrians to the back of the fair office where the 75th anniversary time capsule that was sealed in September of 1996 was opened.

This year, the fair will be bringing back many fan favorites including the grandstand event that has appeared at all 100 fairs — harness racing. In addition to the races Wednesday, the public is invited to the kick-off dinner and wine tasting.

Thursday is Family Fun Night; Friday Night Demo Derby; Saturday Night PPL Tractor/Truck pulls; and Sunday Funday including the MP Antique & Stock Tractor pulls and annual car show.

Woodcarver Tim Gill will be returning along with the annual MP Fair Antique Tractor Show. Friendly

Farms Petting Zoo and Pony Rides, ImAGination Acres, livestock shows, exhibitors’ displays, vendors and concessionaires will be set up each day.

Special 100th anniversary events will include Windy City Dueling Pianos and wine tasting. This year’s Thursday night concert features headlining act Tracy Byrd with opening acts Craig Gerdes and the Joe Stamm Band.

The Budweiser Clydesdales will make their first appearance at the fair in over 15 years. There also will be 100 colorful rocks hidden on the grounds that can be returned to the fair office to receive a special prize, one per person.

A lifetime of memories HENRY — Dorothy (Otto) Wilson has a lot of memories of the fair from throughout her 91 years.

Both her parents were fair superintendents, her father of the swine department, which she remembers having at least 500 hogs on hand, and her mother of the culinary department.

Otto herself was superintendent of the floricultural department, overseeing many changes and additions during her tenure including adding design, individual specimens, table settings and mantles.

“I remember there used to be a lot more of an agricultural fair, and a lot more machinery and it was in September, the same time as the 4-H Fair,” she said. “We would get out of

Henry School every afternoon and go right to the fair every day.”

“Some of our favorite memories include taking the kids to the demos on Friday,” Mara McDonough of Wenona said. “Once we arrive, we check out all the tractors, see what great concessions are on the midway, get a bite to eat and make our way to watch the cars get demolished. We always love cheering for our friends who put the time and energy into their cars!”

The harness races are etched as a big part of the memories around the fair.

“Some of my first memories as a child are from going to the fair with my great uncles and cousins and betting a quarter on the harness races.,”

Chauntell Biagi-Bruer said.

Biagi-Bruer’s memories aren’t just personal, however. As head of Putnam County Emergency Management, she said 2016 was an especially memorable year.

“It was July 13, 2016. We were in contact with the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities. They were tracking a storm that had produced a tornado and was headed our way at the fair. We worked with the Fair Board, Henry Fire Dept, BPMCHD, Marshall County EMA and Putnam County EMA. We ended up having to evacuate the fairgrounds and people were able to take shelter at the Henry Fire Dept. It was a night that Dawn, Terry, Kaylee, Rich, and I won’t forget,” she said.

World famous Budweiser Clydesdales arrive at Marshall-Putnam Fair

HENRY — The world-renowned Budweiser Clydesdales showed up at the Marshall-Putnam Fairgrounds in Henry on Sunday afternoon.

The Clydesdales will be on display throughout the entire the county fair, which runs July 14-18.

Admission into the fairgrounds is free and parking is also free.

The Clydesdales will be hitched up and parading around the fairgrounds during certain times and during grandstand events. To see the hitch schedule, visit marshallputnamfair.org.

HENRY — The 2021 Marshall-Putnam “Century-A-Fair” is July 14-18 and offers a large variety of children’s activities.

“Tropical Thursday,” July 15, with Family Fun Night starting at 2 p.m.

Family Fun Night is filled with a large array of entertainment including Ms. Fancy Paints’ Tattoos and Top Hat Productions, Allan Adcock. Mr. Adcock is a very talented balloon artist, ventriloquist, and magician. He will be performing on the stage from 2 to 7 p.m.

The Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau will be returning with ImAGination Acres. Due to COVID restrictions, some of the children’s favorites will be taking this year off, but there will be plenty of fun for all to enjoy.

The area fire districts will again be bringing their fire trucks to the fair to let children check out their equipment and the opportunity to ask a real firemen questions. Trucks will be on display Thursday evening during Family Fun Night from 4 to 8 p.m. Their plans are to also have trucks at the fair on Saturday 1 to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon to 3 p.m. if the trucks and volunteers are available.

In the Hunt Building on Friday, at 1:30 p.m., Bingo Blitz will be offered for children 12 and under. This event is sponsored by Eberle Enterprises, Inc, Eberle Brothers Trucking Inc. and Henry Rotary. That evening, kids can have fun experiencing their own demo derby during the

kids power wheels derby in front of the grandstand beginning at 7 p.m. Eastend Towing and Spirits of Henry are the sponsors of this event.

There is no cost to enter the kids power wheel derby, but they must wear a helmet and provide their own battery-powered vehicle. The MP Fair demo derby will follow the power wheel derby.

Saturday morning offers several children’s contests beginning with the Down in the Barn activities at 10 a.m. in the Hunt Building, sponsored by Eberle Enterprises Inc., Eberle Brothers Trucking Inc. and Henry Rotary. Contests include cutest farmer and longest ponytail for 2-11 year olds. The kiddie tractor pull will be at 11 a.m., with registration starting at 10 a.m. The kiddie tractor pulls are sponsored by Energy Specialists, Peru Waltham Insurance, Family Farms Together and LaPrairie Mutual Insurance. At 3 p.m., children and adults can use their creative side during the potato decorating contest.

Wrapping up the fair is Sunday Funday. Come at noon to partake in fun games and races including bottle ring toss, penny drop, water boat race, Ryan’s squirt gun ball blaster, Red Solo Cup water gun race, horse wrangling, water balloon toss and other fun activities. At 2 p.m., join in on the fun with the fair trivia scavenger hunt.

During the scavenger hunt, children will learn a little fair history as they visit the fairgrounds while building a souvenir craft. Warning: you may get wet, if you choose to play certain games.

Sunday Funday children’s activities are presented by The Ryan and Brittney Leech Family and sponsored by Wilson Insurance.

Hennepin Park District will sponsor Gerrie’s Craft Corner

HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District will be sponsoring Gerrie’s Craft Corner during the week of July 19-23.

Craft Corner will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Hennepin Park District Community Room. Participants will be making a variety of crafts throughout the week. The cost of this activity is free for Hennepin and Hennepin Township residents, and $5 for all other areas.

Participants are invited to stay after crafts for open swim at no additional charge. Children 11 and under may stay up to three hours if not accompanied by an adult and children under 45 inches must have an adult in the pool area with them.

Unvaccinated individuals are asked to please wear a mask for this program.

Seniors are welcome to attend, free, on Thursday, July 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Hunt Building. Doors open at 8 a.m. when seniors will be greeted by local officials of the two counties. Retired Marshall-Putnam Judges Mike McCuskey and Scott Shore will emcee the event, with free refreshments, many donated door prizes for those over 65, and a guest appearance of the fair royalty, all adding to the fun.

The Henry Torpedo Boys will also perform once again, back by popular demand. The group includes Terry Feldott, the proprietor of the Guitar Junkyard in LaSalle on banjo; Rich Selquist of Henry on dobro; multi-instrumentalist Dave “Barney” Erickson of Lake Wildwood on mandolin, fiddle and guitar; Tom Bogner

The group’s fame has grown over the years as they treat audiences to a mixture of bluegrass, new grass and some country.

“We are very much looking forward to performing for our seniors again,” Bogner said.

COVID precautions are in place; vaccinations are very highly recommended; those who have not yet been fully vaccinated (both shots at least two weeks prior to the event) are asked to wear a mask and socially distance, at all times.

Seniors needing transportation to the fairgrounds may call BPART (serving Bureau and Putnam County) at 877874-8813 or Marshall-Stark Transportation at 309-364-2287 as soon as possible to be added to the transportation schedule.

The Putnam County Community Center will also help coordinate transportation to the fairgrounds in Henry.

The Henry Torpedo Boys will perform at the Marshall-Putnam Fair Senior Day event on Thursday, July 15, from 9 to 11 a.m.

MICHAEL A. ELLENA Born: September 26, 1958; Spring Valley Died: March 12, 2021; Rowlett, Texas ROWLETT, Texas — Michael Anthony Ellena, 62, died in Rowlett, Texas, on March 12, 2021, when he lost his battle to cancer.

He was born in Spring Valley, IL, on September 26, 1958, to Tony and Irma Ellena. Mike worked side by side with his father on the family farm and at Ellena Construction. He graduated from Putnam County High School in 1976 and married Gayle (Jones) on February 4, 1978.

Mike quickly made a name for himself in the car business. He started selling cars at Big Billy Barrett’s in Dallas, and then became a self-employed automobile wholesaler. He worked out of the Image 1 building on Northwest Highway in Dallas for many years.

Mike continued to buy and sell cars until his illness would no longer allow him to do so. He loved his profession.

Mike’s greatest passion was time spent with his family. He also played many games of golf and shuffleboard throughout the years. Although he enjoyed the games, it was time spent with friends while playing the games that he enjoyed the most. If Mike was your friend, you had a true friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Irma Ellena; and his sister, Diane Ellena.

Mike leaves behind a family that adored him as much as he adored them. He is survived by his wife, Gayle; two daughters, Shawna and Andrea Ellena; his son-in-law, Stoney Adams; his grandson, Anthony Ellena; his granddaughter, Delaney Adams; his sisters, Helen (Fran) Aimone, Emma Haywood, Toni Sabotta, Kathy (Rich) VanBeuning, Mary (Jerry) Mooberry, Laurie (Dan) Kotecki and Shelly (Brad) Kays; and many nieces and nephews.

SPRINGFIELD — lllinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses and ID cards have been extended an additional five months — from Aug. 1, 2021, to Jan. 1, 2022.

The new Jan. 1, 2022, extension also includes expiration dates that will occur between July and December of this year. As a result, expired driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until Jan. 1, 2022, so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities, especially during hot weather. This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

“Extending expiration dates until Jan. 1, 2022, means people with an expired driver’s license or ID card do not need to rush into a Driver Services facility immediately,” said White. “... if you must visit a facility, please come prepared to wait outside due to continued social distancing efforts, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time. We are allowing more people in the facilities at one time due to relaxed protocols.”

MARTHA ‘MARTY’ J. YAUCH Born: January 3, 1934 Died: July 6, 2021; Peoria GRANVILLE — Martha “Marty” J. Yauch, 87, of Granville passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, IL. Private funeral services will be held. Burial will be in the Union Grove Cemetery in rural Granville. Dr. Ron McNeill will officiate.

Mrs. Yauch was born January 3, 1934, in Putnam County to Orpha and Gladys (Kelley) Holman. She married William Yauch on November 30, 1955, in Granville, IL. Mrs. Yauch was a nurse for Dr. Davito in his office for over 40 years. She graduated from LaSalle/Peru High School in 1952 and graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in 1955. Years later, when it became available, she returned to school for her Bachelor’s of nursing. She became a licensed nursing home administrator in 1973. She was Death Investigator in Putnam County for many years.

Mrs. Yauch is survived by nieces, nephews and chosen daughter, Cathy (Chuck) Oliveri.

Mrs. Yauch was preceded in death by her husband, William, on September 30, 1989; two brothers; one sister; and chosen son, Chuck Zellmer.

Pallbearers will be Doug Holman, David Holman, Craig Johnson, Olivia Lawley, Joe Vishnauski and Jeff Greathouse.

Memorials may be directed to the family for charities of Marty’s wishes.

White noted that Senate Bill 2232, which Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law and had passed the House and Senate by overwhelming margins, authorizes the Secretary of State’s office to extend driver’s license and ID card expiration dates to Jan. 1, 2022. Senate Bill 2232 was sponsored by state Sen. Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) and state Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg).

White continues to urge the public to consider using online services when possible instead of visiting a facility due to heavy customer volume. White has greatly expanded online services and encourages the public to visit his office’s website at www.cyberdriveillinois.com. Many transactions can be conducted online, including the purchase of license plate stickers, obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card, and renewing driver’s licenses and ID cards, including Real IDs, for those who are eligible.

As a reminder, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023.

NEWS BRIEF Lower main parking lot reopens at Starved Rock State Park

UTICA — A portion of the lower main parking lot at Starved Rock State Park is open with limited parking, after recent flooding closed it.

Visitors are encouraged to use the gravel overflow parking lot at the south entrance of the park off Route 71.

The boat ramp at Starved Rock remains closed.

The picnic area closest to the visitor center is open but areas further west towards the boat ramp remain closed.

The Upper Dells portion of Matthiessen State Park now is open.

The Lower Dells containing Cascade Falls and Devils Paint Box remain closed.

The Illinois River at LaSalle fell below flood stage on July 6.

Illinois & Michigan Canal boat rides in full swing in LaSalle

The Illinois and Michigan Canal boat is welcoming back visitors for the 2021 season.

“The Volunteer” is a mule-pulled 1840’s replica canal boat. Every trip begins with “Mule Tending 101” as period-dressed guides introduce the passengers to Moe the mule. Tales of the canal are told while the deck hand, mule tender, and boat captain guide the boat one mile up the canal to the Little Vermillion aqueduct and back in an hour-long adventure.

Boat rides are typically available 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Rides are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors and $9 for children. Various weekdays are also available, for a full schedule and more information, check out iandmcanal. org/experiences/canal-boat/. Riders can purchase tickets online, pick them up at the I&M Canal Visitor Center in La Salle and then walk or drive down to the boat. The Visitor Center has café beverages, gifts, exhibits and a limited food menu.

“The I&M Canal Boat is a great starting place for exploring the I&M Canal National Heritage Area,” said Canal Corridor Association Executive Director Ana Koval, “You get to

learn about how vital the canal was to making northern Illinois the key crossroads of the American mid-continent and the rise of Chicago from a canal port to the greatest city of the American heartland. Then you can explore 44 other sites that tie into this story, including canal town downtowns, trails, natural areas, monuments, and museums.”

Designated by Congress, the Canal Corridor Association is the only local coordinating entity for the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Area. The CCA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization tasked with maintaining and enhancing the historic, cultural, and natural resources of the I and M Canal National Heritage Area.

Free boating safety classes at Illinois Waterway Visitor Center

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, will offer two free Illinois Safe Boating classes this summer from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 24, and Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center at the Starved Rock Lock and Dam. The classes are open to everyone age 11 and older. Students under age 16 should be accompanied by an adult and pre-registration is required.

Upon successful completion of the class and exam, participants will receive an Illinois DNR Boat Safety Certification.

Located at 950 N. 27th Road in Ottawa, the classroom-based course will include instruction in basic boating safety, equipment and requirements, motorboat registration and titling, navigation, basic mainte-

nance, emergency measures and Illinois and federal boating laws. Noonthe-water experience will be offered during the class. Class materials will be provided but participants should plan to bring their own lunch and drinks.

Illinois law requires anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1998, who intends to operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more, to complete a boating safety course. The class is recommended for people who are new to boating, scouts, families that enjoy weekend boating adventures, or seasoned boaters who would like to brush up on their safe boating knowledge. Anyone over the age of 12 can be certified.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics indicate that of the accidents where the level

of operator education was known, 77% of boating deaths occurred on boats where the boat operator had never received boating education instruction.

“People who go through a boating safety class are more aware of Illinois’ boating laws and safety concerns,” said Park Ranger and Boating Instructor Bob Petruney. “They are also more comfortable operating their vessel and can safely enjoy themselves when on the water.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers encourages all boaters to follow state and federal boating regulations and to wear life-saving personal floatation devices when near or on the water.

Board member ‘always thought of students first,’ IVCC president says David Mallery of Hennepin, a 16-year board member, made his resignation official at the July 8 Illinois Valley Community College board meeting.

Mallery, first elected in April 2005, said in his letter of resignation, “It truly has been a pleasure and privilege to be an IVCC board member, IVCC graduate and parent of two students.

“While I have always intended on serving entire terms, life has altered those intentions. I anxiously await the completion of my Florida home and find it time to recognize that I will soon be unable to legally serve IVCC as an elected board member,” Mallery said.

“Thank you to the 21 peer board members who shared the board table with me over the many years … and while we may have had disagreements at times, I believe we shared a common passion for our students.”

IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said Mallery championed construction of the Student Center as chair of the board’s facilities committee.

“You always thought of students first,” Corcoran said.

In other business, the board approved a tentative $34.4 million budget, up 7% over the previous year because of more than $3 million in pandemic-related federal funding.

IVCC has received $3.2 million from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund to address student and institutional needs resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak.

• Daryle Wragge, a 40-year high school and college ag instructor, lauded IVCC’s ag program in a letter to program co-coordinator Willard Mott and Corcoran. “I am extremely proud of all that you and the college have done to promote, develop, and enhance agricultural education in our district. I have known for years the dynamic potential IVCC has for an outstanding agricultural department. We now are realizing it.”

• An IVCC partnership with Regional Office of Education #35 and the Business Employment Skills Team has resulted in 170 students earning their high school diplomas after having dropped out. Regional Work Study program coordinator Steve Malinsky is retiring after 49 years in education and will be replaced by recently retired Seneca High School Supt.
