It’s a record (and then some): Starved Rock, Matthiessen shatter June visitor totals TOM COLLINS Shaw Media

There were backups on Route 178. Utica police ticketed motorists for illegal parking. The lots filled so quickly that closure announcements, once limited to weekends, happened on weekdays.

Many predicted the June totals for Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks would be staggering, and they were right. For Starved Rock, the June totals not only set a samemonth record, but the monthly total was the second most in park history.

Matthiessen, by one measure, had its biggest month ever.

Alvin Harper, site superintendent for Starved Rock and Matthiessen, reported the totals Sunday morning.

Starved Rock posted 363,836 visitors last month, he said, which is 62% above the June average and the second biggest month in park history, behind only July 2017, which recorded 411,708.

And could July set a record of its own? As a frenetic holiday weekend drew to a close, Harper couldn’t rule it out.

“It’s been extremely busy,” Harper said. “We haven’t had to close down Starved Rock, except Friday, but we’ve definitely had large visitor turnout.”

Two hours after relaying that information, Starved Rock was closed. About 11:30 a.m. Sunday, the park office advised that the lots were filled to capacity.

As for Matthiessen, Harper said they’re tweaking the way visitors are counted to get more precise totals. As a result, the June totals yielded divergent figures, but by one measure Matthiessen had its biggest month ever.

Matthiessen’s June visits were estimated at 90,046. If accurate, that’s not only the biggest-ever June but the biggest-ever month in park history.

Utica police fully expected a crush of tourists after the parks were reopened in late May when infection controls eased. Nevertheless, Police Chief Rod Damron momentarily was taken aback by the record-setting totals — until he looked at his incident reports and saw a spike in traf-

fic violations and accidents.

“We handled a total of 14 traffic crashes in the month of June, which is high for us,” Damron said, “and I suspect the month of July will be even higher.”

Both parks were shut down earlier this year by the COVID-19 pandemic, giving park staff a rare window to make past-due improvements such as tree removal and trail remediation. April’s total was zero, while March and May yielded the lowest totals in 30 years or more.

Illinoisans wrestled not only with the pandemic but also a companion case of cabin fever and made a beeline for the parks after reopening. Mother Nature did nothing to dissuade them: June was notably warm and sunny — the U.S. Drought Monitor labeled parts of La Salle and Livingston counties “abnormally” dry — and the Weather Channel showed only four days peaking at 90 degrees or higher.

Utica Fire Chief Ben Brown didn’t need the 10-day outlook to let him know the parks were bustling. His pager rang often enough to let him know Starved Rock was in record territory.

“We had a record for June, too,” Brown said. “We’re already 25 calls ahead of our pace from last year, and we had 50 calls in June alone. We usually run about 400 a year.”

The saving grace has been a lack of falls. The majority of calls have been for on-trail injuries. Brown emphasized he’s aware of tourists going off-trail and risking their lives, to say nothing of the lives of first-responders, but so far there haven’t been any fall-related injuries or deaths.

It will be some time before Utica businesses learn what impact the park’s reopening will have on commerce. June retail receipts won’t be processed and released to the village until after Labor Day. Meanwhile, it had seemed Starved Rock would miss welcoming 2 million yearly visitors for the first time since 2013. That no longer is a certainty.

Starved Rock’s year-to-date attendance remains sharply below average (26.4%), but there were 717,000 visitors in the gates through June 30. At that pace, Starved Rock could crack 2 million with average attendance the remainder of the year.

5 more cases announced

Since July 3, two residents of Bureau County and three residents of Marshall County have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Bureau County cases are a teenage female and a male in his 20s.

The three Marshall County cases are a male in his 20s, a female in her 60s and a male in his 60s.

Public health officials at the Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Department are in the beginning stages of the investigation and are working to identify individuals who were in contact with the cases.

There are currently nine active cases of COVID-19 in the three-county region.

Since March 23, there have now been 42 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the counties served by the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments. Bureau County has had 30 confirmed cases. Marshall County has had 11 confirmed cases.

Putnam County has had one confirmed case.

There have been two deaths in the three-county region related to COVID-19.

the fight against cancer. Every year donations help the American Cancer Society offer cancer screenings, 24/7 navigation and support, along with conducting research for treatment and cures. Cancer hasn’t stopped during this pandemic, but neither will ACS and relayers around the country.

The American Cancer Society has stepped up to help during the COVID-19 pandemic by keeping the National Cancer Information Center staffed 24/7 so families can talk with and get answers from a live person no matter where they are or what time it is. They are also updating Cancer.org and other social media channels with the latest information for cancer patients direct from ACS public health experts. Hope Lodge Facilities have been made available for health care workers on the front lines of this crisis at no cost. These

are just a few of the many ways ACS has stepped up during this time.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the world’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event to save lives from cancer. For 35 years, participants and volunteers across the world have come together to honor and remember loved ones and take action for lifesaving change.

Funds raised through Relay For Life have funded breakthrough research, 24/7 support for cancer patients and access to lifesaving screenings.

The American Cancer Society’s mission is critical to families facing cancer and their mission to save lives is at-risk. People can help by making a personal donation to the event to help keep the mission alive or by purchasing a luminaria to honor a loved one. 4-H PROJECT SHOW

Illinois 4-H project show going virtual this year The Illinois 4-H youth development program empowers and prepares youth for success by providing opportunities for youth to learn, practice and demonstrate skills needed for home, career and global citizenship.

Youth, organized in clubs, study areas of interest called 4-H projects. Projects include a wide range of interests: animal science, civic engagement, leadership, career development, STEM, environment, creative arts and healthy living.

“In a typical year, these 4-H members would demonstrate their knowledge learned in the project

areas at summer exhibitions of their work,” said Lisa Diaz, University of Illinois Extension assistant dean and state 4-H director. “The best exhibits would then advance to state competition held annually during the Illinois State Fair.”

This year, county 4-H exhibitions have transitioned to a virtual rather than in-person contest.

“University of Illinois Extension is committed to the health and safety of our youth, families, staff, and volunteers,” Diaz said. “Though in-person judging can’t happen, project learning never stopped. Illinois 4-H responded in new ways to reach

youth in new, virtual settings.”

With the cancellation of the state fair, Illinois 4-H is announcing its state general project show will continue in the same virtual format as local county 4-H exhibitions this year.

“Though the format is virtual, 4-H members will still receive expert-level evaluation of their project work,” Diaz said. “All youth will be eligible for awards and prizes, as in the past, and we are thankful for the continued support and partnership with the Illinois Department of Agriculture on this important event.”

The 185,000 members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, including the Chief Senachwine Chapter, will celebrate in the upcoming months the century-old vote in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate to pass a women’s suffrage amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The House voted approval on May 21, 1919, followed by the Senate on June 4, 1919.

Still, the proposed amendment had to be submitted to the states for ratification. On Aug. 18, 1920, Tennessee was the last of 36 states to vote for ratification. The 19th Amendment, granting American women the right to vote, also known as women’s suffrage, was officially adopted on Aug. 26, 1920.

Thus ended almost a century of protest at both the state and national levels.

The struggle actually was highlighted at a meeting in Seneca Falls, N.Y., on July 19, 1848, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke these revolutionary words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident. That all men and women are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights;

that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Stanton went on to list the grievances against men who deprived women from owning property, pursuing an education, suing for divorce, serving on juries and voting. She read her last resolution: “That it is the duty of the women of this country to secure to themselves their sacred right to the elective franchise.”

Then passed 72 years of struggle before the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Meanwhile, women like Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, Julia Ward Howe, Jane Addams and Chicago’s own Frances Willard joined the cause.

The first public protest for suffrage occurred during the national centennial celebration in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, when Anthony and others presented an updated Declaration of Rights to Acting U.S. Vice President Thomas W. Ferry. Female support poured in, but a proposal for women’s suffrage never reached the floor of the Senate until 1887 when it was soundly defeated.

However, women in the West

gained suffrage in newly-formed states like Colorado and Idaho.

At the turn of the century, new suffrage leadership pushed for parades, pickets and marches to gain support for a women’s suffrage amendment. One of the largest was held on March 30, 1913, the day before President-elect Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration. Thousands of participants and spectators enjoyed the enormous parade until chaos broke out with rowdy onlookers attacking the marchers. One hundred women were injured, but interest resulted in an amendment presented to the Senate. It fell short by 11 votes.

Later, following protests in Lafayette Park in front of the White House, hundreds of women were arrested and sent to Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia. There they endured beatings and horrendous conditions. When dozens went on hunger strikes, they were subjected to forced feedings and solitary confinement.

Meanwhile, World War I was raging in Europe. Women were recruited to support the war effort by serving abroad as nurses, switchboard

operators and war relief volunteers plus filling at-home jobs left vacant by men in combat. Women bought and sold war bonds, sewed clothes for soldiers, and raised funds to the war effort. When Wilson reversed his stand by supporting a women’s suffrage amendment, he cited the role women had played in the war.

The amendment presented in the Senate fell short by two votes.

Women then targeted re-election goals by opposing senators and representatives, many of whom ended losing their seats. Another depressing vote in early 1919, which went down to defeat by a single vote, was finally overcome in June 1919. The Susan B. Anthony Amendment, known today as the 19th Amendment, finally passed both Congressional houses.

That November nearly 10,000,000 women exercised their right to vote and elected Warren B. Harding by a landslide. The century-old struggle for women’s suffrage had been successful.

Perfectly Flawed founder appointed to new state committee ALI BRABOY Shaw Media A local man will work toward decreasing opioid deaths in a role he was recently appointed to.

Recently, Luke Tomsha announced his appointment to the Governor’s Opioid Overdose Prevention and Recovery Steering Committee.

Tomsha, who was a heroin user for over 14 years, will serve on the committee as a person with lived experience.

“It’s important to have people who understand the need to lead with compassion. For decades, we’ve criminalized this human behavior, and it has made problems worse,” Tomsha said.

“Outside of adding to stigma, which prevents people from asking for help, it actually increases the risk of overdose death and has created further barriers to people getting jobs, education, housing, financial stability, etc. We need to be reducing barriers to re-entry, understand the reasons people choose drugs, what’s going on and why they use them.

“Most importantly, if people are actively using, we need to make sure people are aware of the dangers and risk and know that they have car-

ing people they can trust to support them when they’re ready for help.

“People don’t realize the impact one death can have, not just on a family, but an entire community.”

The committee guides the work of the Illinois Opioid Crisis Response Advisory Council, as well as overseeing the ongoing implementation of the Statewide Opioid Action Plan.

The ultimate goal of the action plan is to reduce opioid-related deaths, which Tomsha said is a bipartisan issue that affects everyone.

“Fueled by the growing opioid epidemic, drug overdoses have now become the leading cause of death nationwide for people under the age of 50,” the Statewide Opioid Action Plan’s website says.

“There’s so much you can learn by having people with lived experience in the conversation and help meet the needs of this population,” Tomsha said. “It’s refreshing they’ve welcomed our voice.”

He said one of the major issues he wants to tackle in his role is achieving social equity and addressing the disparities that exist when it comes to opioid deaths statewide.

Tomsha acknowledges that his personal situation isn’t universal.

“I have been very blessed with

the luxuries of a supportive family, community, social support, access to education, job, health care, food, shelter, privileges and second chances that many aren’t ever allowed.

“My survival is just one example of what we can hope to see if we can achieve equality in our systems where everyone is given a fair and equal chance.”

He had served on the state’s Illinois Opioid Crisis Response Advisory Council for the past three years.

In this new role, he’s representing

the people of Illinois, he said, not the Perfectly Flawed Foundation, of which he is the founder and executive director.

The nonprofit organization is based in La Salle with the mission of “strengthening communities affected by addiction by investing in children, individuals and education” and has worked to provide youth enrichment, education, peer and family support, harm reduction, public health, advocacy and outreach.

Dave was born December 13, 1953, in Spring Valley, IL to Leroy and Helen (Maupin) Nauman. He married Sandra Baker on October 7, 1972, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Wenona. She survives in Magnolia. Also surviving are his two sons, Ben (Jen) Nauman of Henry and Robert (Danelle) Nauman of Henry; his grandchildren, Kyla, Krysta, Kendra, Samantha, and Jackson; and his siblings, Chris Nauman of Henry and Tom (Vicky) Nauman and Anne Nauman, both of Magnolia.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Richard, Don, Larry, Margie Kennedy and Jeannie Redman.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Henry.

Dave was skilled at many occupations in his life, including auto body repair and carpentry, which he learned from his father. He also spent many years driving a truck, welding, and many other trades as self-employed and at Caterpillar. He owned Nauman Properties, Inc. with his sons.

ing tales of his travels. He traveled to all 48 states on a motorcycle, on numerous trips solo and with friends. He loved to see new places, visiting friends and making new ones across the U.S. He loved traveling so much, that he took to the skies. He made so many sky diving jumps that we lost track. Through lessons, he later learned to fly light sport planes and even went on a few solo trips above central Illinois. And when he stayed home- he never slowed down. You could find Dave in the garage tinkering on numerous motorcycles and tractors. He also loved to be out in his workshop making morel mushrooms and wood bowls.

Dave had many interests which always kept him working on a project — from rock tumbling, hunting and fishing, house restoration, and gardening. There wasn’t much Dave couldn’t do.

He loved helping people and always seemed to be at the right place at the right time. If someone needed something, he was there, from fixing cars for grandkids, teaching new skills, to business advice. Dave was an inspiration to many with prosthetics, as he never let the loss of his leg slow him down. He was also involved in the local Jaycees and the Starved Rock Flying Club.

Growing up across the U.S. from Illinois to California and back, Dave lived a full life. He shared his love of travel with his sons, taking them across the county to visit places in California he had lived. Dave also enjoyed motorcycle trips with them once they were older. e shared his love of travel with his grandchildren too, taking them to Disney World and Mexico. Dave’s garage skills live on in his sons through their careers and projects they tinker on.

ROBERT L. JUDD Born: July 3, 1929; Magnolia Died: July 1, 2020; Spring Valley HENNEPIN — Robert L. Judd of Hennepin went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, July 1st, just 2 days shy of his 91st birthday.

Bob died in the loving care of St Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.

Bob was the “Patriarch” of his large family, consisting of 6 children, 17 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren with one great and one great-great on the way!!!

Bob lived his entire life in Putnam County, being born to Marion Gale Judd and Kate Drager in Magnolia, Illinois on July 3, 1929. Bob was the third great-grandson of Thomas Judd, a pioneer of Putnam County.

Bob married Barbara Ann Grasser in Mt. Palatine at the Immaculate Conception Church on November 26, 1949.

She preceded him in death on March 23, 2013. He was also preceded in death by his son, Kevin L Judd on April 2, 1991, by his parents and three brothers and one sister.

Bob and Barbara moved to Hennepin to run their first grocery store in 1956 and lived in the community they loved their entire life. He and his wife also wintered for many years with their friends at the Landings of Fort Myers Florida.

Bob was a member of the Putnam County School Board for 7 years. He was the Chairman of the Hennepin Public Water District at its inception and served as a trustee on the Hennepin Village Board for many years during the building of the J&L Steel Plant.

He was a founding member of the Edgewood Golf Club,

a Hennepin fireman for over 25 years and a member of the Hennepin Betterment Association, enjoying most of all the annual pig roasts of years gone by. He was an active member of the Hennepin Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus. Bob was a man of faith and is a 64-year member of St Patrick Church in Hennepin. Bob operated the Hennepin Food Mart for over 20 years and founded Hennepin Marine in 1960. He opened and operated Hennepin?s first Laundrymat. He was a founding partner of Judd Construction and was named Hennepin Citizen of the Year in 2017 Bob is survived by three sons and two daughters, Terry (Barb) Judd of Hennepin, Charles (Cheri) of Hennepin, and Mark (Mary) Judd of Hennepin, Jackie (Ron) Vice of Peoria, and Judy (Greg) Boggio of Hennepin.

He is also survived by all of his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, who will always remember the happy life they enjoyed with “Papa Candy.” All of the family rejoices and thanks God for the long and full life that Bob was given, for the discipline he instilled in us, the faith he gave us and for the example of service he showed us.

Due to the present environment, a private funeral Mass will be offered under the apple tree in Bob’s orchard at his home in Hennepin with the Rev Patrick De Meulemeester officiating. Interment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Hennepin.

Memorials may be made to the Putnam County Food Pantry or to a charity of the donors choice.

Shaun D. McCague, 34, of Ottawa was picked up June 25 on an original LaSalle County warrant charging him with one count of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (heroin), the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team (Tri-DENT) said. The charge is a Class 2 felony (punishable with three to seven years in prison), alleging he delivered less than a gram of heroin to Tri-DENT, police said. Bond was set at $500,000.

A second suspect charged in the same investigation is being held in Will County Jail on multiple charges. James M. Casey-Wiggins, 24, of Ottawa is being held on $500,000 bond on the LaSalle County warrant charging him with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (heroin), also a Class 2 felony.

Five Putnam County High School girls planned to attend the Breakaway Teen Camp at Lake Williamson in Carlinville this summer.

That, unfortunately, was canceled by the coronavirus pandemic.

In the place of camp week, the girls decided to run to raise money for missions and help spread the Gospel, coinciding with the nationwide unconventional giving-day that youth ministries are doing.

The girls ran 24 miles in 24 hours while raising donations for missions. Their goal was to raise $1,000 with the money going toward getting clean water in Africa, the girls said.

The group was made up Gracie Cuicci, McKinley Cwikla, Molly Roach, Lauren Faletti and Erin Brooker, all sophomores and juniors at PC, who are all members of the youth group of the People Church in Princeton.

“We want to raise money to meet people where they are and help lead them to Jesus. We want to make Heaven crowded,” Cuicci said.

On their Facebook promo video, Falletti said, “We realized Jesus is enough, and we don’t need the camp environment, even though it is awesome. We need to focus on Jesus in our hometown this year, To accomplishment their mission, the girls each ran one mile at the top of each hour starting at 8 p.m. Monday, June 30, through 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 1 — 24 miles in 24 hours.

They tried to sneak in a couple short naps along the course of their adventure.

“Yeah, we are exhausted,” Cuicci said before heading out for their 5 p.m. run Tuesday. “We all got about two hours sleep between all the running.”

Their lack of sleep was all worth it, as the girls smashed their goal of $1,000 by more than $2,000 with more donations coming in Wednesday.

Spratt’s serves up classics with homemade touch If you’re looking for good food in a relaxed atmosphere, look no further than Spratt’s Tap in Hennepin.

I opted for outdoor dining on this outing to take advantage of the weather. Spratt’s has an assortment of tables with and without shade tents, so you can catch some sun or keep cool depending on your mood.

The menu features some favorite local bar classics: an assortment of fried appetizers, burgers, pork tenderloins, fried chicken, wraps and other dishes, along with an ever-changing selection of specials at super reasonable prices. Sandwiches come with complimentary seasoned fries, and you can upgrade to onion rings or cheese curds for just $2 (trust me, you’re going to want at least one of your party to do this, preferably one who shares).

I brought two people with me for a weekday lunch, so I’d have enough diners to check out a couple menu options.

We started with the tavern mix appetizer for $9.50, which I highly recommend. It’s the perfect size, and has enough options for several people to all get some of what they like. It includes waffle fries, a couple mozzarella sticks, a couple jalapeño poppers, a handful of fried mushrooms and onion rings, cheese curds and regular seasoned fries.

Appetizers come with a choice of sauces: garlic Parmesan, bourbon, buffalo, ranch, chili Thai, bang bang, and blue cheese — we opted for ranch (homemade, with excellent flavor and texture). If, like me, you’re a fan of food as a vehicle to get sauces into your mouth, you’re going to like these.

We also opted for a giant soft pretzel with cheese sauce, for $12.95. There’s no way we needed that much food, but if you have the opportunity to order a pretzel large enough to be served in a pizza box, you should go for it.

I was too stuffed to taste this until afterwards, and considering I’m not particularly a soft pretzel fan, I was pleasantly surprised. The pretzel comes salted, with an extra packet of salt for you friends, and two generously sized cups of seasoned cheese sauce. It’s crispy and soft in all the right ways and I highly recommend.

The tenderloin, unlike your typical Illinois Valley thin-pounded plate-sized sandwich, was a fist-

sized slab of pork. It was a good 3/4inch thick, super juicy and lightly fried in a batter that complemented the pork without overwhelming it.

My friend got it with the works, which included lettuce, tomato, pickle and grilled onions.

The chicken strips order was a generously sized four-piece portion, again perfectly battered and fried.

For just $2 extra, the huge pile of

cheese curds that was substituted for fries was totally worth it.
