news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Calling it “the elephant in the room,” Judge Stephen Kouri at a Thursday, June 28 hearing discussed the challenge of jury selection that will be faced before a trial for Clifford A. Andersen Jr. can proceed in Putnam County.

Andersen, 68, of Clifford Standard is charged Andersen Jr. with killing his sister-in-law, Deborah Dewey, and concealing her body.

Dewey, 62, of Ladd was reported missing in August 2016.

Her body was found on Sept. 12, 2016, in a shallow grave in a yard of a Standard home for which Andersen was caretaker. Police were alerted to the property following an interview with a person who had knowledge about the case. One day after Dewey’s body was found in Standard, police arrested Andersen.

“I think we’ll know by the end of the first day of jury selection whether or not we’ll be able to seat a jury here,” Kouri said during the status hearing on June 28.

Before jury selection begins on

July 9, a final pretrial status hearing will be held at 10 a.m. July 5. On that day, Kouri will make rulings regarding motions on the admissibility of photos and X-rays from Dewey’s autopsy, financial evidence, video surveillance, and the chain of custody of evidence. He’ll also be deciding on the stipulations of jury selection.

In response to the defense’s question regarding the admissibility of conversations Andersen had with his wife, Diane, Kouri said he’d already ruled on that motion. She will be allowed to be called and testify at the trial.

Assistant Illinois Attorney General Bill Elward stated he has a list of approximately 75 witnesses and will be providing the judge with a list before the next hearing. Andersen’s lawyer, Drew Parker, of Peoria’s Parker and Parker Law Firm, said he’ll be calling about 14 witnesses to take the stand.

A change of venue to a Tazewell County courtroom is possible if a jury is unable to be seated in Putnam County, and Kouri was concerned the amount of witnesses being called could negatively impact jury selection.

“I’ve tried over 220 jury trials and never had anywhere near that number of witnesses,” Kouri said.

Elward said many of his witnesses won’t be on the stand long, and that some will bolster both the video surveillance and financial evidence that has been previously challenged Deborah by the defense. While Dewey the judge has previously ruled largely in favor of the defense on those issues, he also left the option for the prosecution to regain their admissibility if stronger evidence can prove their relevance.

Kouri has anticipated jury selection will take up to three days and said it should be known by the end of the first day whether they’ll be able to select a local jury.

Both Elward and Parker were in agreement with the questionnaire for the approximately 300 prospective jurors. Two to four alternates will also be chosen from the pool.

Kouri also said it was up to the lawyers to come to an agreement before the July 5 hearing on whether prospects would be interviewed as a group or one-by-one, saying it’s been his experience individual interviews don’t necessarily mean the process will be slower.

Elward additionally stated during the hearing that the state is continuing to provide discovery evidence that is being shared with the defense.

The need became apparent to the Marquis family during extensive hospital stays and chemotherapy treatment for the daughter of Marquis Energy’s Chief Operations Officer Jason Marquis. Marissa Marquis was diagnosed with leukemia in 2017 at 2 years old and is receiving care at St. Jude’s Midwest Affiliate in Peoria.

During hospital stays, Jason Marquis and his family witnessed firsthand young children without family members by their side to comfort them.

“It’s heartbreaking to see kids alone during medical stays. As a parent, I cannot imagine the stress

of parting with your child during this time,” Jason Marquis said.

“That is exactly why the Ronald McDonald house is needed in Peoria, and we are thrilled to be part of this project to keep families together during medical stays.”

Troubled waters on the Illinois River But Bureau-Putnam Health Department hasn’t received reports of illnesses from algae

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Following the announcement by Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) officials of the presence of toxic algal blooms on the Illinois River, a representative from the Bureau-Putnam Health Department has stated they haven’t received any alerts from the state’s health department.

The presence of the algal toxin, microcystin, above the 4 parts per billion (ppb) health advisory established by U.S. EPA was found after a sample taken near Hennepin indicated an elevated level.

“Most likely the heavy rains will keep people off the water and dilute the concentration of cyanobacteria or wash it downstream all together,” Kurt Kuchle, director of Health Protection with the Bureau-Putnam-Marshall County Health Department, said of the recent weather.

The IEPA lab confirmed the microcystin level in the sample at 182 ppb, well above the health advisory limit. The confirmatory sample taken near Marseilles detected microcystin at 4.75 ppb, just slightly above the health advisory limit.

Illinois EPA has been conducting

additional sampling to determine if conditions have improved in the river.

Sampling was also done at Illinois American Water-Peoria, the only public water supply using the Illinois River as a water source, which showed toxins are below the detection limit in finished water samples.

A ranger at Starved Rock State Park said they’ve had no reports of toxic algae and added they didn’t expect to see any because of the rapid flow of water through the area.

Algal toxins, such as microcystin and cylindrospermopsin, sometimes produced by blue-green algae, can cause sickness or other adverse health effects in people and pets, depending on the amount and type of exposure.

According to the recent advisory, the very young, elderly, and people with compromised immune systems are most at risk. Adverse health effects can occur from skin contact, swallowing contaminated water, or inhaling water droplets in the air.

Symptoms of exposure include rashes, hives, diarrhea, vomiting, coughing or wheezing. More severe symptoms may result from longer or greater amounts of exposure.

Surface water affected by blue-green algae often is strongly colored such that it can develop a paint-like appearance. nois rivers, lakes or streams are advised to avoid contact with water that: • Looks like spilled, green or bluegreen paint; • Has surface scums, mats, or films; • Is discolored or has green-colored streaks; or • Has greenish globs suspended in the water below the surface Don’t let pets drink from water with any of the above characteristics. If you or your pet have come into contact with water you suspect may have a bloom of blue-green algae, rinse off with clean water as soon as possible. With all activities that involve contact with lake or stream water, wash your hands before eating.

Toxic algal blooms can be caused by high levels of nutrients in the water including nitrogen and phos-

phorous and often develop in areas of slow moving or stagnant water.

According to the EPA, some of the causes of toxic algal blooms include run-off from agricultural fertilization; ineffective storm and wastewater systems; and pollution from fossil fuel-powered industry.

Those who are concerned about symptoms from exposure to algal toxins should contact a health care provider or call the Illinois Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222. If a pet experiences symptoms, contact a veterinarian.

He said if that testing moves along as quickly as the first round, much of the village may be able to be inspected. He added he’s still hopeful a major cause of the past flooding will be identified.

The board discussed the ongoing problems with the waste water treatment plant’s polymer and drainage tiles. Richetta recommended the existing sludge be removed and disposed of by Stewart Spreading, of LaSalle.

Once it’s been cleared out, he also recommended the area below the facility’s drainage tiles be inspected and cleaned to help with the polymer’s drying. Other areas

• Village attorney Brad Popurella reported the revised tax bills have been sent out.

• The board passed an ordinance that will allow the village to be paid franchise fees by Mediacom.

• Public Works Superintendent Sheli Starkey reported the work at the waste water plant is done and also said the new well is operational.

• Ameren will soon be in the village to trim trees.

• Board member Tina Dolder announced the final Field of Dreams will be held at 6 p.m. on July 21 in tribute to the event’s founder, Darrell Alleman.

• Granville will host its first Granville Days 5K Run/Walk at 8 a.m. on Aug. 4 in Hopkins Park, and it will be held rain or shine.

which is well underway, was initially estimated to cost the village $550,000.

However, LaSalle’s Universal Asphalt & Excavating made a bid of $368,231 and they were willing to extend the reach of the project because of the difference.

The village board approved a project extension to Silverspoon Avenue, and it will also include the reconfiguration of the curbs and stairs in multiple areas along the street. Paving will all be done all at once in order to provide a seamless surface and should be completed in time for the annual cruise.

Bureau County Health Dept. urges mosquito awareness at outdoor events PRINCETON — The Bureau County Health Department has confirmed that mosquitoes collected in Princeton and along the Hennepin Canal in eastern Bureau County during the week of June 25 have tested positive for West Nile virus.

These are the first mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile virus in Bureau County this year.

These positive tests indicate that West Nile virus is present in our local area.

“We are urging the public to use

precautions against mosquito bites while attending outdoor events,” said Diana Rawlings, Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Department administrator. “Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches, however, severe illness including meningitis or even death can occur in rare cases.”

People older than 50 or those with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness from the virus.

West Nile virus is transmitted

through the bite of the common house mosquito, Culex Pipiens.

Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds.

Taking simple precautions can help people avoid mosquito bites and help to prevent the spread of West Nile virus.

• Reduce the chance of a bite and the number of places for mosquitoes to breed by eliminating shallow containers of standing water and refreshing bird baths daily. Ensure that doors and windows have tight, properly fitting screens. Take extra care during evening and early morning hours when mosquitoes are active, or if possible, stay inside.

• Repel mosquitoes by wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts,

shoes and socks and by applying insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535 according to product instructions. Consult a physician before applying insect repellents on children.

• Report areas where stagnant water has been sitting for more than a week, such as ditches or flooded yards.

KATHLEEN MECOZZI SPRINGFIELD — Kathleen M. Mecozzi, 85, of Springfield, formerly of Hennepin, passed away Friday, June 29, 2018, at Mill Creek Special Care in Springfield.

Kathleen was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Spring Valley to Paul and Beatrice (Kinkin) Podobinski. She married Walter Mecozzi.

Kathleen was a interior designer, master gardener and homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Walter G. Mecozzi of Springfield; one son, Walter Paul (Susan) Mecozzi of Edmond, Okla.; three daughters, Sherry (Ronald) Dose of Lostant, Kathleen (John Brogan) Tracey of New Jersey and Laura (Pete) Nicholls of Decatur; two sisters, Paula

Colby of Hennepin and Carol Rolando of Hennepin; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 3, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hennepin with Father Duane Leclercq officiating.

Burial was in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Hennepin. Visitation was held prior to the service in the church.

ZOEY DORAN LASALLE — Zoey Elizabeth Doran, 3, of LaSalle was called to heaven to be one of God’s special angels on Friday, June 29, 2018.

Zoey was born July 22, 2014, in Spring Valley to Joshua and Jessica (Perona) Doran of LaSalle. She was a beautiful little sister to Alyssa, 14, and Brody Buckley, 12, both at home. She was a lovely granddaughter to Mike Holmstrom of Magnolia and Cheryl Holmstrom of Henry, great-grandmother Karen Holmstrom of Mt. Palatine, grandfather Patrick (Christine) Splillane of California, grandmother Shawna Waite of Peru, great-grandmother Montelou Sprott of Michigan and great-grandmother Nancy Martinez of Peru.

Zoey was a special niece to Lindsay Waite and Fellicia Waite of Peru, and to Michael Holmstrom of Magnolia and Eva Holmstrom of Macomb.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Duane (Humpy)

Holmstrom of Magnolia, and great-grandmother, Betty Perona of Henry.

Zoey enjoyed dancing, singing, picking flowers, catching fireflies and chasing butterflies.

She was a vibrant, beautiful, little free-spirited girl who had so much love to give. She was a little angel to all that knew her with her contagious smile she always had on her face or the way she laughed that made everyone know she was a happy little baby girl. She will always be missed and forever in our hearts.

Visitation and services were held Tuesday, July 3, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville. The Rev. Karen Karczewski officiated at the service. A luncheon followed the services at the Magnolia Fire Station. Cremation rites were accorded. A private ceremony will be held at a later date at the Magnolia Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to her family.

POLICE REPORTS PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF Accidents At 4 a.m. on June 23, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a single-vehicle accident on Route 89 in Magnolia Township. The driver of the vehicle, Jose G. Barajas, 32, of Spring Valley, had left the scene prior to police arrival. Located later that day, Barajas was charged with improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, failure to report an accident to police authority, and driving revoked. Barajas was released with a notice to appear and given a Putnam County court date.

The warm weather has pushed its way into Illinois and it’s the ideal time to fire up the grill while spending time with family and friends.

Whether grilling fruit, meat, chicken, seafood, or vegetables, it is essential to monitor the grill, use separate serving trays and utensils for raw and cooked meat, use a food thermometer, and wash hands frequently to prevent foodborne illness.

One grilling suggestion Lisa Peterson, Nutrition & Wellness Educator with University of Illinois Extension College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, recommends is marinating meat, fish, and poultry before grilling.

“Marinating helps tenderize, moisten, and add flavor to the meat while reducing flame flares from

dripping fat, and black charring,” Peterson said.

The American Institute for Cancer Research indicates marinating meat creates a barrier between the meat and high heat from the grill, reducing the formation of potentially harmful chemicals.

A marinade is a savory, acidic sauce where food is soaked to enrich the flavor and tenderize the food.

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest 5 1/2 ounces of lean protein per day following a 2,000-calorie eating pattern. Lean meat contains less saturated fat and a tougher exterior, making it ideal for marinating.

“When grocery shopping, choose meat with a lower percentage of fat and pick select or choice over prime cuts. They contain less of saturated

fat,” Peterson said.

The American Heart Association indicates a diet high in saturated fat raises LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, which increases the risk of heart disease, the No. 1 killer among Americans.

Marinades generally consist of three ingredients: oil, acid, and flavorings such as herbs and spices.

When making marinades at home, a basic marinade is three parts oil and one part acid with the addition of seasoning. Vegetable oil, olive, sesame, nut, or herb-infused oil helps preserve moisture in the meat.

“Red meat typically has enough fat, where oil may not be necessary.

Fish and chicken are leaner, and may benefit from the addition of oil,” Peterson said.

Food safety should be a priority when preparing a marinade.

“Always marinate food in the refrigerator and never use additional marinade that was sitting in raw meat on cooked meat,” Peterson said.

If wanting to use a marinade on cooked meat, set aside extra marinade that has not come in contact with raw meat. Additionally, avoid marinating food in metal containers as the acidic marinade can cause a negative reaction with the metal and contaminate the food.

Tri-DENT agents arrest five Former lawmaker’s STREATOR — Five people were taken into custody on drug-related charges following a Tri-DENT Drug Task Force investigation on June 19.

Brittney N. Savage, 26, of Wenona; Robert Gula, 55, of Streator; and Eric S. Gholson, 35, of Wenona were charged with the Class 2 felony of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (crack cocaine).

Alexander T. King, 28, of Streator was held on a LaSalle County warrant from a lengthy Tri-DENT investigation of heroin sales in Streator where he had delivered heroin to Tri-DENT agents on several occasions.

James R. Stillwell, 53, of Streator was held on a LaSalle County warrant for failure to appear on an unrelated charge.

Tri-DENT Drug Task Force conduced a controlled purchase of less than one gram of crack cocaine from a residence in Streator. Following the purchase, Savage and Gholson left the residence.

Tri-DENT, at this time, in possession of search warrant for the house they left as well as Savage and King, Tri-DENT had Streator Police conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle in Streator.

About 6:46 p.m., the Streator Emergency Response Team as well as Tri-DENT agents conducted a search warrant at the house. During the search, agents located multiple items used in the processing/ packaging or use of crack cocaine as well as items used in the packaging and use of heroin. Gula, King and Stillwell were located in the residence.

wife pleads guilty

BY DAN CHURNEY Shaw Media OTTAWA — The wife of Illinois Auditor General Frank Mautino has pleaded guilty to attacking another woman.

Lena M. Alfano, 54, Spring Valley, was placed on one year court supervision June 22 for knocking down a woman, then kicking and punching her May 19 outside a Spring Valley bar.

According to police, Alfano said she had a grudge against the woman.

Besides the court supervision, Alfano was fined $1,054 and ordered to attend anger management classes and to have no contact with the victim.

Alfano’s husband was formerly state representative for the 76th District from 1991 to 2015 and is now state auditor general.

We mourn the loss of the five people killed at a Maryland newspaper office and salute the staff for their perseverance. Leaders at all levels must work together to end the scourge of mass shootings.

A

n attack on its office that led to the murder of five staff members was not enough to keep the Capital Gazette of Annapolis, Maryland, from publishing its next day’s edition on Friday.

The staff ’s response to the tragedy represented the best of American journalism. It was an honor to their colleagues who were killed: Rob Hiaasen, deputy editor; Gerald Fischman, opinion page editor; Rebecca Smith, sales assistant; and reporters Wendi Winters and John McNamara. It was a commendable show of dedication to their mission as journalists – report on the matters that affect their communities every day.

This newspaper shares that mission. We mourn the loss of the five

people killed and salute the staff of the Capital Gazette for their perseverance, with the hope that those who have survived this tragedy will get the support and care they need.

What appears clear is that the Capital Gazette was targeted for doing what newspapers do – telling important local stories. In 2011, a Capital Gazette columnist had told the story of the shooter’s online harassment of a local woman – how his actions had caused his victim distress and led to a criminal conviction against him.

The shooter sued the newspaper; the suit was dismissed because he failed to understand that in America, a news outlet can not be punished for printing facts – even facts some would prefer not be printed.

The Capital Gazette showed its community the shooter’s malevolent, cruel side. The shooter could not stand it. In attacking the newspaper and killing five innocent people on Thursday, he revealed himself to be not just a menace but a monster.

His actions were another example of an attack on an institution of American life by a uniquely American sort of criminal: The mass shooter.

The scourge of mass shootings repeatedly has struck our public schools and college campuses, as well as military bases, Navy shipyards, banquet halls, concerts, any place people gather. The shooters have used an array of different weapons, from assault rifles to handguns and shotguns.

Newspapers serve an essential function in our society, and many reporters in the business long enough have had people threaten or attempt to intimidate them, either electronically or in person.

The staff of the Capital showed that they would not be silenced even by overt violence, the same way that other institutions have carried on in defiance after tragedies.

Our society has a problem. It is one that leaders at the national down to the local level must work together to address, so that the next attack, the next tragedy, may be prevented.

Ensuring public safety is not a political issue, it is essential for our country’s future.

Poetry in motion: Father’s Day at Denny’s restaurant I was motoring down Illinois one recent Sunday and decided to stop at a Denny’s for an early lunch.

You know Denny’s, the chain that “slings lots of hash,” good hash, big plates heaping with eggs, French toast, pancakes, bacon, and tall milkshakes in cream, pink and lime green hues, all topped with curlycue mounds of whipped cream.

The joint was jumpin’, it being Father’s Day. All the tables were jammed with dads, moms and loud little kids. The cashier tried to comfort the impatient, yet polite families waiting for a table. “Won’t be long now.”

Alone, I motioned to the empty, eight-stool counter. “Sure,” the harried cashier nodded. I plopped down right in front of the open kitchen, separated from the four waitresses by a high warming ledge. Heavy plates came sliding precariously from the grill toward the young ladies, waiting with their four-foot wide, I swear, brown trays, each holding enough to feed the Royal Air Force.

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan weathered, inscrutable age. She didn’t move slowly, but rather deliberately— every motion expended had a purpose!

On the other wing was a 30-ish fry cook, who stoically went about his business. Dark of complexion, wearing a tight-fitting, flat-topped, black cap, similar to those I recall Chinese coolies wearing in old Westerns.

The guy kept a flurry of eggs, cakes and bacon coming. The fellow never uttered a word; he communicated with his eyes.

Behind the warming ledge, eyes darted up to the dozen or more computer-generated order slips, hanging precariously.

I saw precious few mistakes in all this (toast too done; forgot the bacon), and they were remedied without a nasty word. Indeed, nary a sharp word was uttered by

the manager or any of the team throughout my stay at the counter.

In the center was the director, if you will, of this symphony, a trim, middle-age man. Like the younger fry cook, of black hair and dark complexion. He kept his eyes on the order slips, grunting short orders to his fellow fry cooks. This guy was good, and his team appreciated him.

Between me and the warming ledge lay the main pathway for the four waitresses. In their 20s-30s, I would guess, they were of varied shapes and sizes. The one African-American waitress had an angelic smile, which she bestowed upon me from time to time, since I was almost in their faces at the counter.

Moving fast, they briefly scanned their orders before hoisting their improbably big trays onto one flat palm, balancing all, somehow, as they rushed to their waiting diners.

And, of course, the dishwasher. A short, wiry, maybe slightly disabled fellow, right out of central casting.

His big smile never faded, even as the orders came flying from all directions.

“We need plates!” “Get more ice.”

The “symphony director” didn’t

have much directing to do. Everyone knew her job, and did it, efficiently. It was, to use a fitting cliché, poetry in motion.

Why do I write about this? I was much impressed with how well this team operated, of how much satisfaction they gave to the diners, getting them their hearty food as quickly as humanly possible, under difficult, hectic circumstances.

I have no idea what the respective members of the team earn; bet it isn’t much. And I am guessing one or more of the waitresses may be single mothers, working this and maybe another job, to try to provide for their youngsters.

They all deserve more, I think. Yet the restaurant can’t afford to be too generous; if it is, they have to raise prices in a brutal, intensely competitive business. And a look around the restaurant gave me a sense that even these moderately priced meals may have been a stretch for some diners. But hey, it was Father’s Day.

Due to the illness of the owner, the Ritchhart Mobile Petting Zoo has had to cancel. On Saturday, July 14, and Sunday, July 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., they were able to schedule Wild Times Exotics. It is an exhibit of various exotic animals, where children can interact and learn about the creatures. HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam Surf’n-A-Fair, set for July 11-15, has many special event activities being held on Saturday, July 14, for the whole family to participate in.

The Down in the Barn contest will begin at 10 a.m. in the Hunt building.

Starting the day off will be the Cutest Little Farmer Contest. This contest is free to enter for boys and girls ages 2 to 10. Dress as a farmer and bring one object to accent your costume. Judging will be on neatness, creativity and overall effect.

Next will be the Ponytail Contest, for ages 2 to 11 years old. The length of hair will be the chief factor in judging. Hair needs to be in a ponytail, pigtails will not be judged.

Finally a new contest, called Cutest Little Surfer Dog contest, will be held. Dress your dog up for the Surf’n-AFair theme. Dogs must be on a leash and you must clean up after your dog. Prizes will be given in all classes.

Back this year will be the food art contest: Bountiful Fruits Contest, any decorated fruit, fruit art or fruit baskets; The Vibrant Vegetables Contest, any vegetable art or any decorated vegetables; and the Cutie Cupcakes Contest, decorated cupcakes (need at least a dozen).

Prizes for each category include first place, $50; second place, $30; and third place, $20. All three categories are open to all ages. The entry fee is $2 per category. Bring items already prepared for display, tables will be available. Registration and set up will be at 9 a.m. Judging will be on originality, appearance and motif.

MAGNOLIA — Magnolia American Legion Auxiliary Unit 254 announced Taryn Grasser attended Girls State June 17-23 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Grasser is the daughter of Nicole Kays and Bradley Grasser. She is the great-granddaughter of the late Walter “Red” Billups, who served in the U.S. Army as a master sergeant in World War II. Girls State, a week-long program, is a program dedicated to providing training for young women in city, county and state government. They are placed into a two-party system and run for office, campaign, vote and write legislation pertinent to American Legion Auxiliary lllini Girls State, as well as the state and nation.

Along with forming their own government of these three levels, they also heard from guest speakers in political arena (present and past}, veterans and/or active servicemen and women, American Legion Auxiliary members and motivational speakers. Americanism and flag etiquette are taught as well.

Along with educational benefits and the importance of voting and getting involved in community,

Hennepin Park District will host Gerrie’s Craft Corner July 9-13 other areas.

Participants are invited to stay after crafts for open swim at no additional charge. Children 11 and under may stay up to three hours if not accompanied by an adult, and children under 45 inches must have an adult in the pool area with them.

Grasser will be a senior at Putnam County High School in the fall with plans to attend Illinois Valley Community College then transfer to the University of Iowa to pertain a degree and become a pharmacist.

On Friday, July 13, there will be contests throughout the day: Surfboard Follies, Crazy Cookie Decorating and the Beach Search Contest, all brought to you by Granville National Bank.

From 4 to 7 p.m., the IDNR will be providing their conservation education exhibit. Here, children can see and feel real animal pellets and antlers while learning from a conservation officer. On the free stage, from 4 to 7 p.m., will be Mike Wiant, retired archeologist from the Illinois State Museum in Springfield. Wiant has spent more than 40 years studying the history of the Illinois

River Valley and it will be his pleasure to teach you more about any artifacts you may have, including arrowheads. He will also be available to answer questions pertaining to the state of Illinois and its history. Returning this year will be the power wheels derby in front of the grandstand beginning at 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, July 14, beginning at 9 a.m., there will be more children’s contests, including food art contests, Down in the Barn activities, cutest farmer, longest ponytail and cutest little surfer dog. At 10 a.m., register for the kiddie tractor pull and get those muscles ready to pull the sled at 11 a.m. The kiddie tractor pull is sponsored by Eberle Enterprises Inc., Klein Design Inc., Peru Waltham Mutual Insurance, Rathbun Paint and Body, and & Family Farms Together. On Sunday, July 15, children can enjoy the entertainment of the Dance Central Performance Team at 2 p.m. Then at 3 p.m. they can show off their own dance moves at the MP Little Rascals Dance Party. Children can dance to their favorite children tunes and even learn some dance steps.

Stick around because at 3:30 p.m. some of the cowboys and cowgirls from Sunday evening’s rodeo will be there to do a meet and greet. Children can get pictures with a real cowboy or cowgirl, and learn about this exciting event.

The 97th annual Marshall-Putnam Fair will wrap up with the Big Hat Rodeo beginning at 6 p.m. in front of the grandstand.
