COVID update: Eighth case in Marshall County, 25th in Bureau County

Two men, one in his 40s from Marshall County and the other in his 20s from Bureau County, are the latest positive cases for COVID-19 to be reported by the Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Department.

Both men are recovering in isolation at home at this time.

Public officials at the Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Department are in the beginning stages of the investigation and are working to identify individuals who were in contact with the individuals.

Federal privacy restrictions prohibit the release of any additional information regarding this case. No further information regarding the investigation is available at this time.

There have been 34 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the counties served by the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Department.

Bureau County has had 25 confirmed cases and one death related to COVID19. Marshall County has had eight confirmed cases. Putnam County has had one confirmed case. The first case was reported in Marshall County on March 23.

Hennepin couple awarded Putnam County Rotary’s Service Above Self Award

BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media HENNEPIN — A Hennepin couple has been awarded Putnam County Rotary’s Service Above Self Award.

Jennifer and Rob Spratt, owners of Spratt’s Tap weren’t looking for recognition for feeding the county’s school kids during this spring’s COVID-19 shutdowns, they were just looking for a way to give back to the community.

Nearly 3,000 lunches later though, they’re being recognized by their community.

“When Gov. Pritzker announced in March of this year the closing of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we felt we needed to do something to help the families that would be affected by the closure,” Jen Spratt said.

“Having been a substitute teacher at the schools and having a mother that is currently the secretary at the junior high school, I was aware that many families depended on school breakfasts and lunches to help feed their kids,” she said.

In the beginning, she put on the Spratt’s Tap Facebook page that hot dogs and chips would be available to any student in need of a meal daily at the restaurant, and any student needing internet for online learning

would be able to use the dining room and free Wi-Fi available at the bar.

The first week not many students took advantage of the meals, she said, but the community started to notice the program and donated money and goods. After donations started coming in, they were able to start offering more food varieties and also started to deliver meals throughout the county.

This helped provide the service to more families, while also helping to keep Spratt’s Tap staff working during a very hard time. The Spratts were able to keep their employees on the payroll and tips also were given to them for delivery of the lunches.

In total 2,730 lunches were served throughout the county from March through May The Spratts are lifelong Putnam County residents, growing up in Hennepin and Mark. They currently live in Hennepin with their children, Maggie, 12, and Dylan, 8. Both Rob and Jen, along with their parents, grandparents and now children, attended Putnam County schools.

Rob is currently production manager at Mennie’s Machine and Jen runs their businesses Spratt’s Tap in Hennepin and GPS Gaming in Granville. They have been married for almost 14 years. In June of 2017

Health department administrator urges moving forward with ‘great caution’ As Illinois has moved into Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan, the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments remind citizens that COVID-19 has not gone away.

“For persons at higher risk for serious illness and complications from contracting COVID-19 this is a time for moving forward with great caution,” said Hector Gomez, administrator of the Bureau, Putnam, Mar-

shall County Health Departments.

“For the rest of us, it is a time to realize the risks some of our family, friends and neighbors are still facing and exercise good sense and concern for all members of our communities.

COVID-19 is not gone and there is no cure.”

Gomez explained that “Phase 4 will be the longest of the Restore Illinois phases unless COVID-19 cases increase again to a level that begins

to threaten availability of health care services. Phase 5 will not be attained until there are vaccines or effective treatments or cures available and that will be months, or longer, to reach.”

To prepare businesses and employers to implement new and updated safety guidelines in Phase 4, the state has developed a toolkit complete with signage, posters and other resources to ensure business and

activities are conducted in accordance with the latest public health recommendations.

Phase 4 guidelines include five new industry categories and updated recommendations for the existing categories from Phase 3. Each set of guidelines includes a common set of guidelines that are expected and encouraged among all employers and activity types, as well as workplace and program-specific guidelines.

The new/updated guidelines address: • Meetings and social events.

• Indoor and outdoor recreation.

• Museums.

• Zoos.

• Theaters and performing arts.

• Youth and recreational sports.

• Film production.

• Manufacturing.

• Offices.

• Retail.

• Service counters.

• Health and fitness centers.

• Personal care services.

• Day camps.

• Outdoor seated spectator events.

• Indoor and outdoor tennis facilities.

• RV parks and campgrounds.

St. Bede Academy celebrates commencement with outdoor, drive-in style PERU — St. Bede Academy hosted its 128th annual commencement ceremony on June 20.

Seniors were able to graduate in an outdoor, drive-in style ceremony, which took place in St. Bede’s student parking lot.

A covered stage was brought in, and seniors were seated in front of the stage, socially distanced from one another.

Traditionally, all faculty and board members would participate in the graduation ceremony; however, because of COVID-19 restrictions, the number of attendees was limited.

Abbot Philip Davey, O.S.B., chaplain, Father Ronald Margherio, Board President Angelo Perino, Principal Michelle Merson and Superintendent Dr. Ted Struck were present on stage as seniors individually picked up their diplomas.

Speeches were given by Valedictorian Macy Bosnich and commencement speaker Davey, a member of the Class of 1965.

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Department is working to get an $817,000 state grant that will be used to conduct COVID-19 tracing.

The grant would be used to hire part-time tracers who would be responsible in the investigation of tracing positive cases back to its origin. That information would then be put into a state system.

Hector Gomez, director of the health departments, said the role of a tracer would involve talking with different people.

“Once you have a positive, you have 24 hours to get that person and start the process right away to see what locations they were at and who they were with and try to contact as many people as quickly as possible so you can to try to stop the spread,” he said.

Gomez said in some cases people may not want to give information or may not be truthful, for whatever reason.

“It’s kind of hard to force someone

to talk,” he said.

Right now, the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments is waiting on approval for the grant.

The requirements of the grant process were changed after their application was submitted.

“They changed what the requirements were a little bit. We might get it back and (have to) make changes,” Gomez said. “(The applications) were due back June 5 at the time and then they extended to the ninth of June. By then, we had already submitted ours.”

Larger health departments are expected to receive more funding compared to smaller health departments, due to population.

If there’s anyone who understands the importance of contact-tracing to combat the spread of COVID-19, it’s Gomez.

He contracted the virus in early April and missed three weeks of work, but is now fully recovered. He is unsure where he contracted the virus.

“I think I’m OK. I tell people, I don’t know what’s going to happen to me 10 years from now,” he said. “Sometimes

prescription medicines and a lot of liquids. He said he had no appetite, because “you have no taste for food.”

He admitted it was ironic that he contracted the virus.

“If anybody could get it, it was me,” he said.

Health department awaiting word on grant

GARY HARRISON Born: March 13, 1937; Peoria, IL PERU — Gary Eldon Harrison, 83, of Peru, IL passed away at his residence with his loving family at his side.

Gary was born March 13, 1937, in Peoria, IL. The son of Alger and Vera (Koch) Harrison. He graduated from Metamora High school and went to Northeastern College in Sterling, Colorado, on a football scholarship.

While in Sterling, he met LaDonna Mae Miles whom he married April 14, 1956, in Nebraska.

Gary returned to Illinois and became a barber in Peoria. Later he and LaDonna moved to McNabb where they continued growing their family.

He worked at B.F. Goodrich in Henry, IL then became road commissioner for Putnam County Highway Department until he retired. Later in life, Gary and LaDonna enjoyed being snowbirds traveling to Jamaica Bay, in Fort Myers, Florida. While in Florida, one of Gary’s favorite hobbies was taking part in their community plays. They also had their home in Peru, IL where they could be close to family and friends.

Gary is survived by his sister, Juanita (Harrison) Gerlach of Washington, IL; his sons, Gary Jr. of New Mexico, Bruce (Patricia) Harrison of McNabb, IL, Bryan (Tammy) Harrison of Cape Coral, FL, and Brad (Diane) Harrison of Peru, IL; and his daughter, Annette (David) Mennie of Granville, IL. He also had 17 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, LaDonna; and his granddaughter, Jessica Harrison.

According to Gary’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. He

will be laid to rest with his loving wife, LaDonna.

Services will be private for the family officiated by Rev. Karen Karczewski.

Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements.

The family would like to thank caregivers from Home Instead Senior Care who always showed love and support to Gary up to the end.

DOROTHY TONARELLI Born: October 25, 1930, LaSalle Died: June 21, 2020, Henry GRANVILLE — Dorothy Tonarelli 89, of Granville passed away Sunday, June 21, 2020, in Country Comfort in Henry, IL. Private family services will be held.

The Helmer-Shields Funeral Home in Granville, IL is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mrs. Tonarelli was born October 25, 1930, in LaSalle, IL to John and Rose (Sajak) Trebusak. She married William Tonarelli June 5, 1954, in LaSalle, IL. Mrs. Tonarelli graduated from LaSalle/Peru Township High School. She and her husband operated Bill’s Snack Bar in Granville. She also assisted in the operating of the Tonarelli Building Rentals on McCoy Street in Granville for 57 years. She also worked for the Granville Red Fox grocery store and was a bookkeeper for the Standard Oil Fertilizer Plant for 20 years, retiring in 1983 along with her husband.

Dorothy enjoyed traveling the United States and Europe, cooking large meals for family and friends and attending many local fairs and celebrations. She enjoyed treating her family to pasta, pies, candies and pastries she made from scratch for get togethers and

holidays.

She was a member of the Granville American Legion Post 180 Auxiliary, the Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society, Putnam County School PTA, a Cub Scout Leader and Brownie Leader.

Mrs. Tonarelli is survived by one daughter, Julie (Michael) Kelsey of Granville, IL; one son, Michael (Sharon) Tonarelli of Tulsa, OK; one daughter-inlaw, Denise Tonarelli of Minooka, IL; one sister, Donna Kunkel of Rochelle, IL; a sister-in-law, Connie Tonarelli of LaSalle,

IL; three grandchildren, Leslie (Trent) Weaver of Brimfield, IL, Eric (Jennifer) Kelsey of Granville, IL, and Brandon (Meredith) Tonarelli of Glen Ellyn, IL; five great-grandchildren, Lachlan Weaver, Brooks Kelsey, Rhett Kelsey, Elle Tonarelli and Gage Tonarelli; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Tonarelli was preceded in death by her parents; husband William in 2014; son Robbie Tonarelli in 2014; one sister, Angeline Malone; and one brother, Frank Trebusak.

Magnolia man killed in accident MAGNOLIA — A rural Magnolia man died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident that occurred on June 24 on Route 18, east of the Route 26 intersection.

The Putnam County Library District has announced all branches will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, for the Fourth of July holiday. They will continue to have their Magic by Cory program at 5 p.m. on July 4 in Hennepin. The library district will also close at 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 10, for staff training and be closed for the remainder of the day.

Annual Larry Klein Memory Ride and Benefit postponed until 2021 HENRY — The eighth annual Larry Klein Memory Ride and Benefit is being sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the guidelines for social distancing and the recently announced phases, it is highly unlikely they would be able to have 200-plus people together in August.

It takes many weeks to plan stops and secure sponsors, arrange other details, and gather donations for the silent auction and raffle.

It is important to continue to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) so they will be selling shirts. As in

PC equipment turn-in day especially hard to take

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS news@putnamcountyrecord.com The 2020 high school spring sports season will forever be remembered as one with high anticipation and high hopes that turned into much disappointment and sadness.

The Princeton softball team was coming off the first regional championship in school history and geared for another.

The St. Bede softball team hoped to make a return trip to the state tournament.

In track, Bureau Valley junior Kamyrn Kolb, a state champion as a freshman, was looking to get on track after illness sidelined her for competing at state as a sophomore.

Hall senior Marshall Walk hoped to carry over the success of state championships and try to run down another.

Then the nation was shut down by the coronavirus pandemic in March and all those hopes and sports dreams became missed opportunities and “what could have been a.”

Princeton baseball coach Wick Warren found it ironic the day everything shut down.

“It was very sad, We were ready to go and boom, March 13 ... Friday the 13th ended everything,” he said. “Baseball is notorious for superstition, but Friday, March 13, is beyond anything anyone could imagine.”

Warren remained hopeful, keeping PHS’ Prather Field in meticulous shape throughout the rest of spring for the games that never happened.

Uniform turn-in Putnam County baseball coach Chris Newsome always tries to lighten the mood if he sees one of his players having a bad day. There was little he could say when the news broke that the season was canceled.

“Usually this little humor breaks the poor-me outlook, shoulders go back to normal, chins lift up and we get back to normal. When this pandemic caused us to cancel the spring season, there wasn’t a joke or a story I could tell them to get it all back to normal; normal was gone,” he said.

Newsome said the next hardest thing was conducting the uniform turn-in.

“We just received two new uniform tops and the guys were pumped to play in the new threads.

Having to turn the uniforms in without ever playing in them was tough,” he said.

The seniors did get to dress up in the uniforms to have some individual action shots taken of them, thanks to Deb Pyszka, Newsome said.

Defending champions The Princeton Tigresses softball returned much young talent from its 2019 regional championship teams, including seven regular starters.

They envisioned putting more numbers of championships on the banner at Prut Gym. It never happened.

“It was weird not to be able to play this year,” PHS sophomore outfielder Hannah Muehlschlegal, who was an All-BCR First Team pick as a freshman. “We all look forward to playing together all year, so it was very disappointing to not get that opportunity. We will miss the seniors next season, but the incoming freshman class has a lot of talent, so I am excited to get on the field next year, make more memories, and hopefully be able to defend our title.”

Sophomore pitcher Katie Bates was unlikely to have been able to pitch this spring due to a shoulder injury, so the canceled season bought her time to recover.

“We were all disappointed that we didn’t get to play our season, because we were planning on picking up right where we left off, but honestly, I had mixed emotions about it,” she said. “It was almost a blessing in disguise for me. Ever since I tore my labrum in my right shoulder last August, pitching was a struggle. I most likely wouldn’t have been able to pitch this season, but with the extra rest and time to build up my strength.

“I’ve been able to ease back into it and get back to where I used to be, which I’m super excited about.”

An eye for state The St. Bede Lady Bruins were coming off third-place finish at state last year and returning six starters. All it needed was someone (senior Hayley Short) to step up to take over the pitching duties for workhorse Abby May and the leadership of 2019 BCR Player of the Year, Maggie Sons.

The Lady Bruins were excited to get back on the field.

“How could you not be (excited),” St. Bede coach Rob Ruppert said. “We were looking forward to good things. We were just getting started.

Man, we had high hopes.

“Obviously, it’s tough to make it back to state.

We set a goal every year. We want to make state and we work our way back - super-sectional, sectional, regional conference. And you take the little victories - the Halls, the L-Ps, the Marquettes.”

Ruppert felt bad for all the girls, especially the seniors, that they didn’t get a chance to play.

“It just stung having that taken away from us, but I also understand the gravity of the situation,” he said. “I think we probably did right from what the government and IHSA did. It’s paying off now, I think. But, still the girls put in a lot of hard work not only in the spring, but, a lot of them play year round and put a lot of effort in it and they didn’t get to use it.”And some of those seniors, it was going to be the last time they were going to play.”

Back on track Bureau Valley’s Kolb was hoping to make up for lost time, her junior trip to state canceled when she developed mono the week of state. She had anchored the Storm’s state champion 4x100

relay and state runner-up 4x2 relay as a freshman, and was putting in a lot of extra work to get back atop the awards podium.

All those plans and dreams came crashing down with the cancellation of the season.

“I was completely devastated when the season was canceled,” Kolb said. “Knowing last season when I got mono, everyone told me I still had two more years to come back and bring home four first place medals. With this season gone I have one more left and I’m going to push past my goals.

“I’m going for state records. I’m thankful for my family who have been by my side helping me train and getting ready for my senior year.”

Like Kolb, Hall’s Walk was a state champion, anchoring the Red Devils’ blue-ribbon 4x100 and 4x200 relays last year. He was getting all geared up for another state run, more on the individual side this year with his relay mates the year before graduated.

“It was very hard to comprehend that I was not going to have a senior season at first, but as time went on I just accepted it more,” he said. “Everyone always remembers their senior season over any other season as time goes on but my class will not get to have that luxury.”

Walk tries look at things in a positive way, because “that’s all you really can do.”

“I am fortunate enough to say I still went out with a “bang” as last year we had an unbelievable end to our season, and I came out of it with two state championships and another individual medal,” he added. “I always tell myself this all could’ve been worse if it were to happen last year, and we wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to compete for our state titles in our relays.

“So there are always the pros and cons, but ultimately I can’t be too upset with it myself because every single athlete had to go through the same situation and fortunately enough I came out on top either way and had a blast with some amazing friends of mine.”
