GRANVILLE — Granville village leaders may not want to begin paying the county for the dispatching and other law enforcement services they’ve used freely for years, but they’re likely going to begin paying someone.

Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle and Putnam County Board Chairman Steve Malavolti attended the June 19 Granville Kevin Doyle Village Board meeting to further explain the Putnam proposal that previousCounty ly prompted Granville sheriff Police Chief Kevin Moore and board member Jim Petit to speak out against it.

“It’s been brought to me that some people feel this is double taxing, or something like Steve that,” Doyle said.

When a village or town takes on the responsibility of becoming incorporated, they accept certain responsibilities, and one of them, if they choose to have a police department, is to have their own dispatch service,” Doyle said.

The proposal would charge the village a prorated amount of $5,558.64 for 10 months of the 2018-19 fiscal year, $7,633.85 for the following year, and gradual increases to $8,341.73 by the 2022-23 fiscal year.

For this amount, the village would include dispatching; fingerprinting and booking services, use of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office radio frequency and tower; access to their records management; and use of their Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS) terminal.

Doyle said the county has been providing these services free for a long time, but that recent state mandates and other issues have increased expenses to the point where there has to be a change.

“This isn’t a new concept,” Doyle said.

“This has been in the news in the Illinois Valley for probably two years with the Illinois Valley Regional Dispatching. If it was the

responsibility of the sheriff’s office to provide dispatching to all these villages and towns for free, why wouldn’t LaSalle, Peru, Oglesby and all of them say ‘Sheriff, you have Jared Baker to dispatch for us’?” he Granville vilsaid. lage president Doyle reiterated the proposal wasn’t meant to be controversial, but that one of his duties was to be fiscally responsible.

He then reminded the board that when he was previously mandated to spend $6,000 on a new Intoxilyzer, he’d twice asked Granville to assist with the cost, as a goodwill gesture. The village chose not to help, but Doyle pointed out their police department is the second biggest user of the equipment.

Doyle then went on to list a variety of increasing expenses for equipment and services that the sheriff’s office is mandated to fulfill and that Granville regularly makes use of.

He added this proposal has been discussed for several years.

He told the board there were other dispatching services available in the area, such as the Illinois Valley Regional Dispatching and Bureau Emergency Communications (BuEComm), but added he didn’t think agreements with those centers would provide as many services for the amount his office has proposed.

The board was also informed the state has mandated the consolidation of dispatching centers, and that cities, towns and villages across the state are paying for dispatching.

Petit replied, “Before I will approve anything, I would like to see a detailed plan of what you’re doing to cut your budget’s costs.”

Doyle responded: “Jim, in all due respect, that’s like me saying if I get a new tax on a bill, if I lived in the village of Granville, ‘I don’t like what you’re doing with your streets and I’m not going to pay my taxes.’

You can’t dictate how the county spends its budget.”

Doyle then said he didn’t spend all of the sheriff’s office’s budget and that he has made cuts to his staffing, adding the county has repeatedly been left short-handed while covering Granville because the Granville Police Department didn’t have anyone on duty.

Petit then continued, saying he hadn’t seen anything from the coun-

ty except a reduction in hours at the courthouse.

“The proper channel for that to be addressed is at the county board.

Why don’t you go to the county board and address them?” Doyle asked.

Petit then replied that Granville has its own things to work on, and that he wasn’t going to “get his nose” into the county’s issues.

Malavolti then said the county’s spending has been under budget for the past four years. Much of this year’s financial challenges for the county is a result of the state significantly reducing the amount of revenue it was going to provide to Putnam County after the year’s budget had already been passed, as well as multiple reserve-draining expenses over the past few years that couldn’t be avoided.

He added the county’s budget, as well as its audit, are both online and that he thinks the dispatching proposal is fair.

“You’re looking at less than a dollar an hour for dispatching fees,” Malavolti told Petit.

Petit then asked what would happen if Granville chose not to approve of the proposal.

Doyle told him it wouldn’t affect ambulance and fire services, but that Granville’s calls would no longer be going through the sheriff’s office.

“If you don’t want to join our dispatch, all we need is a number or frequency you want it forwarded to, that’s it. Whether it’s the village hall number or your police chief or sergeant’s cell phone number, whatever it is. You’re under no obligation to come to the sheriff’s office,” Doyle said.

Petit then continued in regards to the cost-cutting measures the village has previously taken and the county’s current financial situation.

Doyle said it was an entirely different subject, and said these issues should be addressed with the county board, not the sheriff’s office.

“It’s as simple as this: you’ve been provided services for a long time, and you’re now being asked to pitch in some,” Doyle told Petit, adding that Petit should already be aware of how to address the county’s budget issues through the proper channels of government.

Granville has been asked to provide its decision by July 1. The board tabled the issue and took no action after an executive session.

Residents should take caution on Illinois River Officials monitoring algal bloom growth Shaw Media Illinois officials are monitoring water conditions on the Illinois River primarily in a stretch from Morris to Lacon, which includes Hennepin, Spring Valley, LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa.

Officials have been alerted to a possible algal bloom on the Illinois River and are actively monitoring conditions to keep communities and residents informed, according to a press release issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

blue-green algae may bloom in these waters. Some blue-green algae can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals, according to the release.

Blue-green algae (also known as a cyanobacteria) are microscopic organisms that naturally occur in lakes and streams.

A blue-green algal “bloom,” which occurs with the rapid growth of algae, has been documented along the stretch of the river between Lacon and Morris. Initial screening of a water sample taken near Hennepin indicates an elevated level of the algal toxin, microcystin.

Additional testing of samples collected will be conducted. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is also establishing a sampling schedule and coordinating visual reconnaissance with its partners for

Algal toxins sometimes produced by blue-green algae can cause sickness or other adverse health effects in people and pets, depending on the amount and type of exposure.

The very young, elderly, and people with compromised immune systems are most at risk.

Adverse health effects attributable to algal toxins can occur from direct skin contact, swallowing contaminated water, or inhaling water droplets in the air. Symptoms of exposure include rashes, hives, diarrhea, vomiting, coughing or wheezing. More severe symptoms may result from longer or greater amounts of exposure.

Sales pitches heard for solar, energy rates, safety system

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The Putnam County School Board has a lot of information to process after its June 18 board meeting in regard to both operational costs and safety.

The board heard its second proposal for a district-wide solar project, its second proposal from a school security company, and a presentation of potential electrical rates in anticipation of the district’s energy contract with Constellation Energy ending in November.

“There’s been a lot of work going on behind the scenes as we’ve been trying to address the operational costs of the district,” Superintendent Carl Carlson said.

“We’ve been transitioning to LED

lighting in our gymnasiums and other major areas of the district, and that’s been lowering our monthly costs,” he said.

Granville resident Lenny VanWingerden, of energy broker Lands Energy, presented information on electrical rates that he believes could save the district substantial amounts.

VanWingerden performed an energy audit of the 13 meters at the district’s four locations and determined they consume roughly 1.6 million kilowatts of energy a year with about 55 percent of it occurring during off-peak times. The district spends approximately $99,000 a year on its energy supply, which doesn’t include taxes, fees or delivery charges.

The district’s current contract with Constellation was signed five years ago with a locked-in rate of .059 per kwh.

VanWingerden presented the board with a variety of options that could lock in a portion of the rates at approximately .03 per kwh during on-peak times and then

“ride the market” for off-peak times. He said such an arrangement could save the district about $20,000 a year in energy consumption costs.

Solar project

Greg Williams, of Siemens, presented its proposal for a district-wide solar project with no out-of-pocket costs for the installation.

“A project like this is good for the environment, it’s also good economically, and it’s good socially because it sets a good example for your students,” Williams said.

Siemens would take advantage of a 30 percent investment tax credit, an advanced depreciation schedule, and renewable energy certificates

to help fund the project. The leased panels at each school would provide approximately 90 percent of the required energy.

The district would be billed .065 per kwh with a 2 percent increase per year for 20 years, which would include delivery and other fees. At the end of the 20-year agreement, the district could either extend it, have the panels removed or purchase the panels. According to Siemens, the project would save the district almost $33,000 at the first year’s rate.

Safety system presentation

Laramie Storm, of Blue Point/Seconds Matter, presented information on its alert notification system.

“Malden and BVHS have already signed up, and other area schools are considering it,” he said.

The system would include training and the installation of both police and medical pull stations, similar to fire alarms; interior and exterior strobe lights; PA upgrades; mobile devices; and software.

She is survived by two daughters, Constance “Connie” (James) Halbleib of McNabb and Eleanor (Ronald) Mecagni of Peru; one son, Gerald “Pete” (Frances) Happold of DePue; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; twin sons, Ronald (infancy) and Robert (82); a daughter, Norma Jean (age 10 months); and eight siblings.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 25, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with the Rev. Ben Carlson officiating.

Visitation was held prior to the services. She was buried next to her husband in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mount Palatine.

Doris Happold leaves behind a legacy that is etched on the hearts of those who had the privilege to love her — for over a century.

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — Betty L. Grasser 93, of Bonita Springs, Fla., died Thursday, June 21, 2018, at her residence.

Betty was born June 29, 1924, in Springfield, Ohio, the only child of the late Harold B. and Blanche L. (Bates) Pence. A former lifelong resident of Springfield, Ohio, Betty had been a resident of Bonita Springs since 1982.

Before her retirement, she previously worked for Wren’s Department Store in Springfield as a purchasing agent and buyer. In her spare time, she enjoyed water skiing and boating on Indian Lake.

She was a member of the Eagles, the Moose Lodge and the Elks. She was also the former secretary for the Friends of the Fakahatchee.

She is survived by her husband,

Wayne E. Grasser of Bonita Springs, Fla.; her three children, Betty V. Patton and her husband, Edward, of Springfield, Ohio, Earl W. Foster Jr. and his wife, Celine, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Vicky L. Gannon of Bonita Springs, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Earl W. Foster, who died in 1986.

Private services will be held by the family.

MCNABB — Surrounded by the love of her family, Doris Ruth (Swain) Happold, 104, formerly of McNabb, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at Heritage Health Senior Care in Peru.

Doris was born to Louis W. and Flora Alice (Noblet) Swain on Sept.

19, 1913, in Brown County, Ind. She married Adolph “Rudy” Happold June 6, 1932, in Mount Palatine.

Doris attended John Swaney High School.

She worked at the McNabb Post Office for 30 years and retired after her many years of serving as postmaster. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Palatine. She enjoyed singing in the choir and was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She loved to travel and took frequent road trips with her husband and other family members. Her love of the Chicago Cubs, word puzzles and chocolate birthday cake was only surpassed by her love for her family.

Doris was loved so very much, by so many people. She had a way of making every moment with her a lasting memory. Her clever stories and charming sayings would bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart. Her laughter was contagious and her love was

WALTER BOUXSEIN HENNEPIN — Walter Michael Bouxsein, 74, of Hennepin passed away Friday, June 22, 2018, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Mike was born April 24, 1944, to Walter Moritz and Lillian Marie (Hamm) Bouxsein.

He married Pamela Cadwallader March 2, 1968, in Hennepin.

After graduating high school, Mike was in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965 and was stationed in Germany. He was a member of Hennepin American Legion Post 1044. He was a mechanic and owned and operated Mikes Shop in Hennepin. Mike also farmed his entire life.

Survivors include his wife, Pam Bouxsein of Hennepin; one daughter, Michelle Bouxsein of Buffalo Grove; one brother, Jim (Gloria) Bouxsein of Hennepin; and two brothers-in-law, Bob Biagi of Hennepin and

MCNABB — Margaret V. Kuhn, 90, of McNabb died Tuesday, June 12, 2018, in her home.

She was born Nov. 9, 1927, in Peru to Stanley and Veronica (Harczynski) Byczynski. She married Stanley Edward Kuhn April 25, 1947, at St. Valentine Church.

She was involved in many community fundraising events. She worked at Valley Forms in Spring Valley for many years.

She was a member of the former Immaculate Conception in Mt. Palentine and was a current member of St. Patrick Church in Hennepin.

Margaret is survived by three sons,

Dan (Lynn) Kuhn of McNabb, Chris Kuhn of Alhamera, Calif., and Greg Kuhn of McNabb; and two granddaughters, Whitney Campbell and Angela Kuhn.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband in 2002; two sisters, Antoinette Dondelinger and Elizabeth Watts; and one brother, Ray Byczynski.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, June 26, in St Patrick Church in Hennepin with the Rev. Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mt. Palentine. Visitation was held prior to the service.

Single-vehicle crash At 6:43 p.m. on June 18, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Route 71 approximately one-quarter mile west of County Highway 1100 East in Granville Township.

A vehicle driven by Malcolm L. Porter, 37, of Princeton was eastbound on Route 71 when the vehicle left the road and entered the north ditch for

unknown reasons. The vehicle went back onto the road and overturned several times, ejecting Porter from the vehicle.

Porter was transported to St. Margaret’s Hospital where he was pronounced

dead from his injuries. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Putnam County EMS, the Granville Fire Department, the Mark Police Department and the Granville Police Department.

Attractions added for Hennepin’s ‘Thunder on the Illinois’

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Hennepin is ready to light the fuse on a thunderous Fourth of July. The village’s annual celebration, “Thunder on the Illinois,” is Putnam County’s only fireworks display and is well known across the Illinois Valley.

During the June 20 village board meeting, board member Scott Mennie reported that donations had surpassed what had been expected.

“It’s going to be a Kevin good show,” he said.

Coleman “We’ve also added Hennepin vil- an extra band for the lage president dinner crowd, a 50s and 60s band, and we also have additional vendors and will also be live-streaming the fireworks for the first time,” board member Quentin Buffington said later in the meeting.

The presentation of the 2018 “Larry Wilt Citizen of the Year Award” to Fred Lippincott has been changed to 4:15 p.m. on July 4.

The day will include a 5K run/walk, a pancake and sausage breakfast, a car show at Bassi Park, a bags tournament, bingo, a beer garden, inflatables, water fights for children, multiple musical performances and more.

The main event, fireworks over the river, will begin at 9:30 p.m., and a band will resume playing afterward from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Boyle Park improvements The board reported improvements will be made to the bathrooms at the Walter Durley Boyle Park and also approved electrical work at the shelter, which will include additional GFCI outlets, as well as a low-voltage LED light strip along the center line of the interior roof.

“The addition of lights in the shelter will help provide additional safety in our park at night,” Buffington said.

Streets and seeds

Engineer Ken Giordano reported that while the major paving and curb work of the village’s street improvements have been completed to the village’s satisfaction, the reseeding of grass along the construction areas is still a problem.

He said the landscaping contractor did what was supposed to be done, but added, “We weren’t expecting four to six inches of rain in the two or three days afterwards, but there’s not a lot we can do about Mother Nature.”

Giordano has fielded several complaints from residents. He said the contractor would be returning to address the issue and added a substantial portion of the contractor’s fee was still being withheld until the job is complete.

“That’s the one problem we have when we use dirt along the edge of things until the grass grows. But, on the flip side, if we had put rock in, everyone would be picking it out of their yard. This is sometimes the price we pay when we get a lot of rain,” he said.

Fireworks July 4 The main event, fireworks over the river, will begin at 9:30 p.m., and a band will resume playing afterward from 10 p.m. to midnight Hoxsey Lot Striping of Grand Ridge for $5,430.

A bicycle lane will be added along the north side of High Street from Route 26 to Eighth Street. The parking area in front of the village hall, as well as the new parking area near the corner of High and Eighth streets, will also be striped.

The board also approved the striping of the three handicapped parking spots at Walter Durley Boyle Park for an additional fee.

Communications

Village attorney Sheryl Churney reported the state Legislature has recently passed a law permitting small wireless facilities to be constructed within local municipalities.

“This is in connection with the rollout of 4G and 5G phone net-

works, and instead of having the big antennas we’ve had in the past, they’re going to be smaller communication facilities that can be mounted on things like traffic lights, street lights and existing facilities within the community,” Churney said.

By Aug. 1, the village is supposed to pass an ordinance that will likely be based off of the Illinois Municipal League’s model ordinance. Churney added the village can charge for the new facilities, and she thought they would be set by statute.

In other board news • A list of trees that will soon be trimmed by Ameren is available for viewing at the village hall.

• The lights at the ball diamond are being re-lamped.

• The materials for the new entry sign along High Street will cost approximately $2,500. Much of the labor will be completed by the village. The sign will hang from a cedar beam that will be attached to a 3-by-3-foot concrete column installed safely away from the path of traffic.

School finances explained in 700 words Senators Manar, Barickman push for more funding

W

hen I was Gov. Jim Thompson’s aide for education in the late 1970s, there was an adage that only six people in Illinois understood the state school aid formula – and they weren’t allowed to fly on the same plane.

There is a new formula today, just as complicated. And state senators Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill, in Macoupin County) and Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington) would be among those six experts today.

Andy and Jason are highly capable, earnest Eagle Scout types.

Over five years of hard work, they have taken the lead, along with scores of other participants, in crafting a new formula that will use evidence of best schoolroom practices to drive the allocation of increased amounts of state school dollars.

If the state can fund it, which is far from certain, the formula would put much more money into property-poor districts to provide them the teachers, staff and programs needed to give students a good chance at being successful.

Some background: At a statewide average of $13,000 per student times 2 million enrolled in our public schools, Illinois spends from all sources about $26 billion a year on pre-K through

Almost two-thirds of all Illinois school funding comes from local property taxes, yet property wealth is spread very unevenly across the state’s 840, often small, school districts.

As a result, the modest share of school funding that comes from the state is at present woefully inadequate to bring property poor districts anywhere close to spending levels by the many wealthy suburban districts.

Thus, my rural school district spends $10,500 per student while New Trier, on the wealthy North Shore of Chicagoland, spends $25,000 per. (Much of that difference is, by the way, for higher teacher salaries at New Trier.)

The new evidence-based funding model draws upon research findings that show, for example, a 15-1 teacher-student ratio in third-grade is optimal for best outcomes. If a district lacks money for such a ratio, that is figured into how much state support the school will receive.

If a district spends more for administrators than is considered best practice, the district is not rewarded for that spending with additional state money. And so on, across scores of indicators.

Since best practices generally

The former say there is little, if any, positive correlation between spending and outcomes; liberals tend to find some positive linkages. Maybe a focus on spending for best practices will be productive in this regard.

I recall an academic paper some years ago that showed the strongest indicator for student performance was the highest level of education achieved by parents. Barickman said he and his school formula colleagues have been focused on doing what they can to improve education offerings inside the school and classroom.

“There was no consensus on how to address matters outside the school,” he said.

Outcomes aside, I believe that manifest justice calls for providing children with somewhat equal resources for their schooling. In addition, however, we need to figure out what society can do to generate much better, stronger parenting.

This may come about through parenting classes, community leadership, senior volunteers, nonprofit groups, and churches, rather than through government.

I predict that when the focus turns to parenting and educational outcomes, senators Manar and Barickman will be at the forefront of the discussion.

cost more money, the formula will still, as before, attempt to provide increased money for property poor districts. Yet the funding will be based on what a model school district would look like.

In the past, state money has been allocated by Byzantine education politics into transportation, special education and other narrow buckets, unrelated to best practices.

To fund the formula fully will require about $7 billion a year in new money (above the present $70 billion in annual state “all funds” revenue). I estimate about twothirds of that money will benefit downstate school districts, where property wealth is low overall.

Jason Barickman attended the tiny Woodland district in Livingston County. Located between Chicago and Springfield, Woodland had just 198 students in its high school this past year.

“Our property wealth was not high,” says Jason. “We were offered only a core curriculum, and the school had a hard time attracting teachers.” (The average Woodland High School District teacher salary in 2017 was $49,000 versus $111,000 at New Trier.)

For the past 2 years and into the future, lawmakers are seeking $350 million per year in additional state dollars for local schools. At that rate, it will take about two decades to reach full state funding of the new formula.

Athletes compete in Special Olympics Several Putnam County athletes competed in the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games held recently in Bloomington and Normal.

Owen Lindstrom won a gold medal in the standing long jump.

Winning silver medal were Alyssa Fluech in the standing long jump and Caleb Haig in the shot put.

Winning bronze medals were Jesse Modaff in the mini javelin, and Devin Masters and Kayte Bernardoni in the unified bocce ball.

Justin Masters placed seventh in the softball throw.

Beth Jackson and Justin Masters were set to run in the 100 meters but didn’t due to the heat index.

Hennepin will host 42nd celebration HENNEPIN — Hennepin’s 42nd July 4 celebration, “Thunder on the Illinois,” will be Wednesday, July 4, in Hennepin.

Several activities being held during the day, including Movin’ for Music, 5K Run/Walk followed by a pancake and sausage breakfast sponsored by the Putnam County Music Boosters. From noon to 4 p.m., there will be a cruise-in held at Bassi Park.

Other activities will be a bags tournament, bingo and beer garden, water fights for children and kids inflatables will be provided.

The Putnam County FFA will be

cooking pork chops, plus several food vendors will be in attendance. The Citizen of the Year will be presented at 4:15 p.m. on the courthouse stage along with performances by the chorus and Little Panteras. Bagshot Row, a 50’s/60’s British Invasion band, will perform at 5 p.m. A golf cart parade will be at 6:45 p.m. and Snap Shot will perform from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Fireworks on the riverfront will start at 9:30 p.m. and the band will resume at 10 p.m. and play until midnight.

Marshall-Putnam 4-H Federation will host blood drive on July 18 HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam 4-H Federation will sponsor a blood drive during the 4-H Show in July.

The blood drive will be from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, in the Anne Building at the M-P Fairgrounds in Henry.

The blood drive is just one of the special events held during the Marshall-Putnam 4-H Show. For complete show details, contact the University of Illinois Extension office, Marshall-Putnam Unit at

To donate blood, call the M-P Extension Office to make an appointment. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. 14th annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition announced Entry forms are now available; deadline is June 30 Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has announced entry forms are available for the 14th annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition.

Winners will receive the Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award.

“We created the Illinois Emerging Writers Competition to promote creative writing and provide an outlet for talented writers,” White said. “Great poems have the ability to enrich and enhance our lives, and I am looking forward to celebrating talented poets with this year’s competition.”

The award is named in honor of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn

Brooks, and is co-sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book.

The competition is open to Illinois residents age 18 and over.

Entries must be postmarked by June 30. Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($500), second ($300) and third place ($100). Winning poems will be submitted for possible publication in the “Ninth Letter,” “RHINO”and “Quiddity”journals and “Poetic License Press”publications. Winners will read their poems at a ceremony later this year at the Illinois State Library in Springfield.

Seniors Day at M-P Fair will feature Henry Torpedo Boy’s musical revue Torpedo Boys, welcomed back by popular demand and known for their fun as well as their great musical talent. In addition to free entertainment lasting until 11 a.m., there will also be free refreshments and many door prizes donated by local residents and businesses.

OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College agriculture program continues to develop more educational opportunities for students including strengthening its relationship with the University of Illinois Extension and the U of I’s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) in crop and soil research.

“This expansion is just the latest example of the invaluable partnership between IVCC and the University of Illinois Extension,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran. “It is particularly timely as this fall we will be offering a new agronomy program featuring a two-year AAS degree along with a university transfer option.”

The 2018 research project is using a portion of the 153 acres of IVCC farmland south of campus that will benefit from the cooperation of tenant farmer Luke Holly of Granville.

The project, utilizing acreage on the southern end of IVCC farmland along Richard Moyle Highway, will focus on three areas: • The first will involve soybean planting populations. The yield

results of the varying soybean populations will be compared at harvest.

• The second is designed to determine the impact of Dicamba on soybeans. Dicamba is a broad spectrum herbicide widely used to control broadleaf, which has raised concerns about its potential drift characteristics.

• The third will involve the late summer inter-seeding of cover crop varieties into the standing soybean crop to evaluate their adaptability.

Cover crops can play a significant role in management of nitrogen and other nutrients in the soil.

Located on acreage at the north end of the field and just south of the campus is a demonstration plot planted with soybean varieties with different maturity dates. As these plants grow, marked differences in the rate of plant maturity will become readily apparent.

The demonstration plot will be available to IVCC ag students as well as for a summer field day sponsored by the Extension and College of ACES. “Having the opportunity to conduct research projects in partner-

PRINCETON — Festival 56 will present The MOMologues, a comedy that takes off the kid gloves and gets real about parenthood. Show dates are July 3, 5, 14, 17 and 19 at Princeton’s Grace Performing Arts Center. All performances start at 7:30 p.m.

The MOMologues brings area audiences a dose of everyday American motherhood, although the proverbial apple pie may sometimes be the in-your-face kind.

When writer and director Lisa Rafferty was looking for a play about motherhood, she couldn’t find one that told the truth and made audiences laugh at the same time. The only solution was to write the play herself. In collaboration with two other writers/mothers, Stefanie Cloutier and Sheila Eppolito, she created a one-act play about four women struggling with getting pregnant, giving birth, and caring for a newborn. This was the beginning of The MOMologues.

Encouraged by the success of the first MOMologue, the three writers expanded the play into a full-length production. The four moms on stage now had to deal with differences between raising boys and raising girls, picky eating, discipline, and where not to pee.

Then, just as in real life, along came a second MOMologue, Off to School, and a third, The Final Push, covering adolescence to leaving the nest.

Festival 56 is presenting the first of the MOMologues, which has been performed more than 1,000 times across the country and abroad, reminding audiences that no one is alone in this overwhelming, exhausting and hilarious journey. Fes-

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College theatre director Don Grant Zellmer announced IVCC has acquired the rights to present the area premier of “Mamma Mia!,” the hit Broadway musical featuring the music of ABBA. “Mamma Mia!” is slated for production April 18-28, 2019.

“We’re beyond excited for our audiences, community performers and performing arts students to have an opportunity like this,” said Zellmer.

“We’ve been waiting for the release of this musical, and the email announc-

ing its availability (from the royalty company) came in at 1 p.m. We got the OK, and applied for licensing by 3 p.m.

We announced it on our IVCC Fine Arts Facebook page as soon as we received the license. The excitement is unbelievable.”

Auditions, to be held in December, are open to community members as well as students; dates will be announced in September. “Mamma Mia!,” as well as fall productions, will be performed in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre.

Convoy Against Cancer on July 21

LaSalle library will host local authors on July 12 LASALLE — The LaSalle Public Library will host local authors Debra Borys of LaSalle and Marydale Stewart of Spring Valley at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 12. At this informal program, the authors will share excerpts from their newly published novels, “Cry Baby Cry” and “Leaves of the Linden Tree,” answer questions, and talk about their books and about writing.

Borys is the author of “Street Stories Suspense” series, which is based on her own experiences as a volunteer among homeless youth in Chicago. “Cry Baby Cry” is the fourth in the series. Stewart is the author of “The Wanderers.” She has published three poetry collections. “Leaves of the Linden Tree” is the sequel to “The Wanderers.”

Mattern and Kunkel are two of 46 high school seniors and college transfer students across Illinois who will head to the University of Illinois with help from the Extension to ACES scholarship.
