Hegeler Carus Mansion announces 2020 Outdoor Summer Concert Series LASALLE — The 2020 Outdoor Summer Concert Series at Hegeler Carus Mansion, 1307 Seventh St., LaSalle, kicked off on June 19. Grounds will open at 6 p.m. Bands will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Cost is $5 per person and pay is accepted at the gate. Food and drink are allowed. Concertgoers should bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Some nights will feature food vendors. No smoking, vaping, candles, tiki torches, etc. are allowed. Eight-inch circles have been spray painted over the concert yard with 6 feet between circles for social distancing. Additional safety rules are: • Masks must be worn whenever a person is outside a circle. • Concertgoers must self-maintain distance when outside their circle. • More than 10 in a group will not be allowed. Guest can use adacent circles if available. • Contact information will be collected if needed. • Everyone will get hand sanitizer as they come in the gate.

GRANVILLE — The Putnam County Rotary held its annual awards banquet and president’s installation event virtually this year — a different look but proof that the ideals of community service and fellowship continue
in the months ahead. District Governor Bobbi Burke also attended via Zoom, congratulating the club for its endurance and service, and Valentina Daza Gutierrez, who has returned to Colombia after her year in Putnam County as a Rotary exchange student, joined the Zoom meeting from Colombia on the occasion of her 18th birthday. Special recognition was given to Rob and Jennifer Spratt, owners of Spratt’s Tap in Hennepin, for
their volunteer efforts in providing lunches to students in need after COVID-19 forced closure of the schools, supplementing the school lunch program which continued during the shut-down. The club presented the Spratts with the club’s thanks, a commemorative plaque and an honorarium of $100 to the Putnam County Community Center as their charity of choice.

The Putnam County Library District will be reopening its doors on Monday, June 29, for patrons to re-enter the branches. This marks the first time since March, patrons will be able to check out materials from inside the library. Holds that were placed in March before the libraries closed will be coming in transit shortly. Patrons will notice some changes around the library, but the changes are meant to ensure health and safety among everyone. Patrons are required to wear masks when they enter the branches. There will be shields at each desk for safety purposes between staff and patrons. Materials returned will continue to be placed on a seven-day quarantine before other patrons are able to check them out. Patrons should continue to maintain the 6-feet apart rule. The 6-feet apart rule does apply to upcoming programs as well. It is recommended to continue to listen to the programs online preferably. Bernie Egan, library clerk at the Granville branch, is looking forward to welcoming back the patrons she hasn’t seen in months. She said before COVID-19, the library wasn’t just a place to check out books, it
was a community center where people gathered and caught up on the everyday topics. Egan said that camaraderie has been sorely missed and she looks forward to catching up with community once again. The library district is working to do what it can to provide programs in a safe manner. In-person children’s programs have been put on hold, because of a concern for safety among the young children. Online children’s programs continue to be offered on Facebook and Zoom. Egan said she has a book club with 16 members who won’t be able to meet inside the library, but discussions are ongoing about the possibility to meet outside in the park where people can safely social distance and take part in the book discussions. Egan said she and the fellow library clerks are committed to doing what they can to provide a safe environment that offers as much as it can to its patrons. While libraries weren’t listed as essential at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Egan stressed that they are essential for the soul of the community. They have become a destination and many take advantage of the endless resources it offers to patrons. PRINCETON — Friends of 4-H and Extension who help to support outreach educational programs for the Extension Service and 4-H/Youth Development Programs in Bureau County have announced the winners of the cash raffle fundraiser. The drawing was held at 2 p.m. June 19 at the Becker Professional Suites Building in Princeton. Gerri Frank of Beck Oil Co. drew the winning tickets. Four cash prizes were awarded: Judd and Ann Lusher of Princeton, $2,500; Ron Behrends of Tiskilwa, $1,000; Lisa
Tina Dolder, Betty Johnson, Lisa Johnson, Brandy Sandberg, Adriane Shore, Scott Shore and Reed Wilson. Rotary’s new Board of Directors, installed by Club Chaplain Ron McNeill, includes President Tina Dolder, Vice President Brenda Bickerman, Immediate Past President Matt Hostetter, Treasurer Brandy Sandberg, Secretary Scott Shore and additional Board Members Beth Acuncius, Debbie Buffington, Nancy Burress, Ron McNeill and Adriane Shore. Though several year-end projects became victims of the pandemic, the club continued to meet weekly via Zoom, maintaining its ongoing projects, selecting and awarding several scholarship recipients, and successfully seeking a new Rotary District Grant for a project to launch next year benefiting Freedom House. Club projects throughout the past year have included sponsorship of summer and full-year exchange students, support of PCJH and PCHS Interact Clubs, co-sponsorship of Illinois Valley Community College’s new Rotaract Club, volunteer and financial support of the Marshall-Putnam Fair’s Senior Day in 2019, literacy projects including the Third Grade Dictionaries Project, Rotary readers in primary and grade school classrooms, help with Family Reading Night and the
Saletzki of Princeton, $500; and Dave Callan of Spring Valley, $250. The Friends of 4-H and Extension volunteer group thanks the public for their support. The support of all individuals and groups who purchased the tickets will help maintain our county-wide University of Illinois Extension and 4-H Program. All proceeds from the event will be used to support the 4-H and Extension educational programs in Bureau County. The proceeds will be used for local services and programming.

NORMA ANN STRUBE RUE GRANVILLE — Norma Ann (Strube) Rue died at her home on Friday, June 12, 2020. She was 80 years old. Born in the family farm house in rural Mason County, IL on October 4, 1939, to Glenn and Lela (Osing) Strube, Norma was the middle child of 5 siblings. She graduated from Easton Community High School in 1957 and studied Home Economics at the University of Illinois, later receiving her master’s degree. Norma arrived in Granville, IL in 1961 to teach Home Ec., Family Living, Life Skills, and Consumer Education at Hopkins High School and later Putnam County High School. She served her community as an educator for 34 years, preparing young people with the skills they would need to become successful adults. As Future Homemakers of America sponsor, she gave of her time and experience planning dances and fundraisers. She founded HAPPY, a school organization that combated youth peer pressure

and substance abuse. Putnam County students would remember Mrs. Rue devoting many late hours helping sew costumes for school plays and editing videos for school groups. Norma married Raymond Rue at an evening candlelit ceremony on December 26, 1972. Together, they enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, fishing, camping and boating. More recently, they could be found spinning around the dance floor at the Paramount Club whenever a swing band or jazz combo was in town. As the family’s historian, Norma enjoyed videotaping weddings, taking photographs and bending the ear of anyone who would listen about her German ancestors and the stories of their lives. An amateur genealogist, Norma recorded her family’s history in a bound book of photographs and memories that she shared with relatives and local historical societies. In 2001, Norma joined Redeemer Lutheran Church in Peru, IL. She served faithfully as board member, secretary/ treasurer, and editor of the bulletin. While at Redeemer, Norma started a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) program to help support young mothers in the community. Norma is survived by her husband,

Governor to cancel 2020 state fairs by executive order State Fairs in Springfield and Du Quoin will be canceled this year by executive order of the governor due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The state made the announcement June 12 in a news release, noting the decision “has prompted the Department of Agriculture to offer a safe, creative way to ensure youth exhibitors still get a chance to showcase their hard work.” That will come in the form of a Junior Livestock Expo in Springfield in September. Illinois exhibitors ages 8-21 can show their animals at that event. The 4-H General Project Show will take place virtually, with premiums and ribbons distributed by the ag department, according to the news release. Entry details for the events are forthcoming. The Du Quoin and Springfield fairs attracted more than 600,000 visitors combined in 2019 and are scheduled to return in August 2021. Last year, the Springfield Fair set records for the grandstand and near record numbers for attendance. “The Illinois and Du Quoin state fairs have been some of my favorite
opportunities to celebrate our agricultural communities and the residents who make Illinois so exceptional,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in a news release. “But it’s because the fairs are such a treasure to so many thousands of people that my administration, like those of our neighboring Midwestern states, must make the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 state fairs in light of the risk posed by COVID-19. This is the right choice based on guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health and other experts: we have to prioritize keeping our people safe.” State Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield) took issue with the governor’s unilateral decision to cancel the Fairs by executive order. “I am tremendously disappointed the governor has canceled the 2020 Illinois State Fair,” Butler said in a statement. “Through state law, the General Assembly has mandated that Illinois shall have state fairs in Springfield and Du Quoin. This decision is yet another one in which the governor has exceeded his authority during the pandemic and will be in violation of state law.”

More visitor restrictions loosened at Illinois Valley Community Hospital PERU — Visitor restrictions at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru continue to be eased as the number of new coronavirus cases in the state continues to trend downward. Starting June 15, patients on the hospital’s medical floor and in the intensive care unit are each allowed to have one visitor with certain restrictions. Among them: • The patient must designate who their visitor will be and that person will be the only visitor allowed to see the patient throughout their hospital stay. • The visitor will be required to enter IVCH through the northeast entrance and be screened; afterward, they must wear a mask at all times, even in the room of the patient they are visiting.
In response to the prevention of the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) the Putnam County Community Center is closed to the public until further notice. PCCC staff will continue to provide assistance over the phone or by e-mail at staff@pcaservices.org. Assistance with nutrition & transportation will be uninterrupted. If you are 60+ and have nutrition questions or concerns, we are here to ensure you have food security during this time. To schedule a ride with BPART, call 1 (877) 874-8813.
• The visitor will have to check in at the nurses’ station before going to the patient’s room and they will have to wear a visitor tag at all times. IVCH emergency department patients may be accompanied by one other person who will be screened and required to wear a mask at all times while in the hospital. The accompanying person will not be allowed to leave the ED patient’s room unless authorized to do so by an IVCH staff member. The new visitor rules come after IVCH announced recently that obstetrics patients who have sonogram appointments and all-day surgery patients are now allowed to have one person accompany them into the hospital. During this time, older adults do not have to meet the usual criteria to receive Home Delivered Meals (homebound, frail, isolated, etc.) Temporarily, anyone 60 or older is eligible to receive HDM due to the circumstances caused by the COVID19 pandemic. HENRY — On Monday, June 15, members of the Henry Events Committee were presented the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Community Service Award for their outstanding service to the city of Henry. The presentation by the Chief Senachwine DAR Chapter was held at the Central Park in Henry prior to the BrownBag-It event, featuring Dan Neff and Jim Selquist. The six-member Henry Events Committee has served for 15 years under the auspices of the city of Henry, raising funds, writing grants, arranging for and booking the performers, planning for the food providers, publicizing, and carrying out the events each summer. The committee also works with the American Legion on the Fourth of July activities and organizes the Cruise-In for Henry, an all-day car display event in the park with food vendors and activities. In addition, the group plans and arranges other events as might arise for Henry. Chief Senachwine Community Service Awards Chairman Nancy Gillfillan lauded the hard work of the committee and introduced committee members: Pat Williams, Adelaide Kern, Mary Jane Thornton, Amy Hernandez and Tom Bogner.

Three area girls will attend Illinois Girls State
MAGNOLIA — The American Legion Auxiliary, Magnolia Post 254, has announced Gabriella “Gabbie” Smith, Emma Edens and Chloe Linton will attend Illinois Girls State. Gabbie is the daughter of Adam and Carrie Smith of McNabb; Emma is the daughter of Eric and Michelle Edens of McNabb; and Chloe is the daughter of Wesley Linton and Jennifer Glenn of Magnolia. As part of the premier ALA program, the girls will study local, county and state government processes during the nonpartisan political learning experience. ALA Girls State attendees, known as “citizens,” receive special instruction in parliamentary procedure and organize themselves into two mock political parties. The young women then campaign, hold rallies, debate and ultimately vote to elect city, county and state officials. Once elected to office, dele-

MTPA announces closures MAGNOLIA — The Magnolia Township Preservation Association joins other area nonprofit organizations in their efforts to support the directives of the state of Illinois by closing the museum and Community Room for this summer. Additionally, they have canceled all programs and events. To ensure they are able to keep their facility maintained in the hopes that they can reopen in the fall, the MTPA has secured a grant
from Illinois Humanities. Illinois Humanities activates the humanities through free public programs, grants and educational opportunities that foster reflection, spark conversation, build community and strengthen civic engagement. Illinois Humanities is a nonprofit organization and the state’s affiliate for the National Endowment for the Humanities.
