HENNEPIN — Large jobs are always easier when people come together to help, and one of the largest jobs in the Illinois Valley is economic recovery. The North Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation (NCIEDC) was created to help communities pool their resources and move together toward prosperity.

Formed in 2016 by leaders in Bureau, Putnam and LaSalle counties, the NCIEDC is a non-profit partnership of public and private investors focused on marketing the region’s industrial assets for new investment projects which will result in increased tax revenue and jobs.

NCIEDC President/CEO Ivan Baker recently presented updates at the June 12 Putnam County Board meeting and also later during a special presentation hosted at IVCC. “We need to work together to make the economy of the three counties the best it can possibly be. We all want things to be better for the 104,000 people who live here,” Baker said.

He said the corporation is following a proven model that is working across the country, and they’re working not only to attract investments from companies already here, but also from new companies coming into the area. Baker said the tax revenues from both new business investments and the new jobs created by them are vital to provide the services the communities need.

NASA ambassador will visit LaSalle to educate on solar eclipse Solar System Ambassador.

According to the NASA website, the Solar System Ambassadors Program works with volunteers across the nation to share in the excitement of NASA’s space exploration missions and to discuss recent discoveries with people in their local communities.

There are currently 730 Ambassadors in 50 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Guam. The ambassadors are space enthusiasts from various walks of life who are interested in providing greater service and inspiration to their communities.

While we now have a better understanding of what’s happening when the moon falls into shadow and creates a lunar eclipse or when the sun is blocked by the moon causing a solar eclipse, many still have questions.

An upcoming program at 6 p.m. on June 22 at the LaSalle Public Library will provide the curious with answers about the upcoming solar eclipse which will occur in August. “Get Ready: NASA Total Solar Eclipse” will be hosted by James Joel Knapper, a NASA

is meant by “the path of totality,” librarian Donna Blomquist said.

On Aug. 21, residents will have a rare opportunity to locally experience a partial solar eclipse and those who are downstate will experience a total solar eclipse.

For the first time since 1918, a total solar eclipse will cross our country. In Southern Illinois the blackout will last about two minutes and 40 seconds, longer than anywhere else along its path.

However, viewing a partial eclipse with the naked eye is dangerous and care must be taken.

The only way to safely view it is by using specially made solar viewers or filters. You also shouldn’t look at the eclipse through unfiltered cameras, telescopes or binoculars.

The concentrated solar rays will cause serious injuries to your eyes.

According to the American Astrological Society, only three manufacturers have certified their eclipse glasses and handheld viewers that meet the international safety standards for such products: Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics and Thousand Oaks Optical.

Two additional library family nights, which have yet to be announced, will also focus on the total solar eclipse and how to safely view it. These programs are free, open to the public and for all ages. The LaSalle Public Library is located at 305 Marquette in LaSalle. For more information, call 815-223-2341.

Science center/student commons in the works

PERU — St. Bede Academy students, faculty, administrators and board of directors held a ground blessing ceremony Wednesday, June 14, where a new 16,000-square-foot science center and student commons area will soon be built.

The project is expected to be finished for the 2018-19 school year.

The science center will feature state-of-the-art laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics and support other innovative STEM-related courses. The center will also include faculty offices, a conference room and an outdoor classroom equipped with gas, electricity, water and solar panels to conduct experiments. The center will be heated and cooled by geothermal energy.

The commons area will feature a space for students to study independently or in small groups or to simply take a break. The commons is intended to have a collegiate look and feel.

The academy has been working with executives from StudioGC architectural firm, Vissering Construction Co. and JB Contracting Corps. on the project.

The science center and student commons area is Phase 2 of the academy’s Legacy Project, which includes four phases.

Phase 1 was completed in 2014 and included necessary upgrades to the fire life safety systems in the main school building and construction of the arch.

Phase 3 includes construction of a field house and renovations to the Abbot Vincent Gymnasium. Phase 4 includes renovations to classrooms, offices and other essential area of the main school building.

“The answer is that the most pressing need was to modernize our science laboratories, and it was most cost effective to building the science center than to renovate,” he said. “This plans also allows us to renovate the necessary or affordable number of classrooms based on enrollment levels and/or fundraising successes. Additionally, the proximity of our science programs allows students and teachers to participate in inter-disciplinary projects where teams of students examine several aspects of a given subject or concept. This intentional, holistic approach is happening at universities today.”

Rezin’s Flood Alliance approved for continuing education credits Certified floodplain managers throughout the Illinois Valley can now receive their mandatory continuing education class credits by attending State Sen. Sue Rezin’s (R-Morris) quarterly Illinois Valley Flood Resiliency Alliance (IVFRA) workshops.

This spring, the Association of State Floodplain Managers recognized and credited two continuing education credits per IVFRA workshop.

wants businesses to come here and make money, and they’ll help them make it and are also willing to discuss incentives, they must also show they’re willing to be committed to their communities.

“We’re not desperate, and we shouldn’t be. If they show they’re committed we’ll work with them, but they can’t come in and assume they’re going to get an incentive just because they have a pulse because the Hennepin steel mill site is actually one of the top mega-sites in the Midwest,” Baker said.

Andrea Poole is the owner of the recently opened business at 199 Gooding St., LaSalle.

“I am my own customer. I have tried on all the clothes myself, so I can give customers a real honest opinion on them. I can tell them they fit because I have worn them,” she said.

Poole stocks junior sizes XL-6X and shoes 6 1/2 to 11. “We stress body positivity,” she added.

“We also have nice quality jewelry and wide calf boots.”

Poole has been in retail management for years and decided she has the experience to run her own business when putting together all the jobs she has had over the years.

• Counselor Jane Sack retired May 31 saying in a letter to Associate Vice President for Student Services Mark Grzybowski, “It has been a wonderful career at IVCC. I wish to thank you and all of the administrators, faculty, staff and students, past and present, for the opportunity to learn and grow among the very best!”

Grzybowski lauded Sack’s work.

“Jane educated and counseled students, parents and co-workers for the past 20 years at a consistently exceptional level,” he said.

• Emily Vescogni, director of learning technologies, has announced her retirement effective Jan. 31. She began her career shelving books in Jacobs Library in 1990 and was appointed to her current position 17 years ago.

“Emily made significant contributions to the quality of the college’s online learning program,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs Deborah Anderson.

In her retirement letter, Vescogni said, “Often, I found myself in awe of the faculty who pressed me to think in new ways. That the college attracted many of them to uproot and move to the Illinois Valley is a great gift to the community.”

She added, “Throughout

• Therapeutic massage program coordinator and instructor Cherie Monterastelli will retire July 31. Monterastelli, who began the program in 1999, was instrumental in getting licensure passed for massage therapists in Illinois.

“Cherie is not only an excellent educator and professional, but a true ambassador for IVCC,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran. Monterastelli was first hired as a part-time nursing instructor in 1995.

• Nursing instructor Linda Hanley will retire Aug. 10 after 14 years.

Director of Nursing Julie Hogue said Hanley’s “professional and calm manner is reflected with the patience she displays while in the classroom and clinical setting.”

In her letter, Hanley said, “I have always felt proud to be associated with such a high-quality, respected institution. Meeting the ongoing challenges, both as a nurse and an educator, has been very fulfilling.”

Trustees also approved: • A five-year maintenance agreement with Ellucian for software maintenance including $247,812 for the first year.

• Extending the contract with Daikin Applied Americas for one year of maintenance on three chiller air conditioning units for $33,600.

• The Prevailing Wage Resolution.

• Christopher Dunlap’s appointment as interim director of information technology services following the

PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF retirement of Diann Jabusch.

A full-time employee since 1995, Dunlap has been the associate director of network systems the past 14 years.

• Tracy Antle’s appointment as nursing instructor to fill the vacancy created by Hogue’s promotion to director. Antle, who previously taught part-time at IVCC and was an RN at St. Margaret’s Health in Spring Valley, has 25 years nursing experience.

• Hiring nursing instructor Taylor Myers to fill an opening created by Eris Simons’ resignation. Myers worked previously as an emergency department nurse in Rockford.

• Authorization to continue payment for standard operating expenditures from July 1 through adoption of the budget.

• Transfer of nearly $90,000 from the education fund to the restricted purposes fund to complete the match for the Small Business Development Center which closed Dec. 31.

• An electricity purchasing contract with MidAmerican or Constellation Energy that could save the college up to $8,500 per year through “Day-Ahead Locational Marginal Price Rates.” Midwest Energy representative Gary Gauger presented to the board’s audit-finance committee May 23.

• Purchasing an upgrade for the Secure 32 check printing system for $16,935 from FIS AvantGard.

• Reimbursement for travel expenses for trustees David Mallery, Jay McCracken, Amy Sipovic and Angela Stevenson for training in Bloomington June 2 and for student trustee Matthew Pehoski to attend the Student

Leadership Institute in Bloomington June 1-2.

• Rejoining the Illinois Community College Trustees Association at a one-time, 20 percent reduced rate of $9,067.

• Ryan Ziegler, shipping and receiving coordinator, resigned May 25 and Sheri Mitchum, audio-visual and computing specialist, will resign June 13. A 16-year employee, Mitchum said in a letter, “I truly enjoyed working in education and I greatly appreciate all of the learning opportunities the college has afforded me over the years.”

At 2:49 a.m. on June 11, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department arrested and charged Raymond J. Huffman, 27, of Granville with DUI following a report of an individual sleeping in his vehicle along a road in Granville Township.

Huffman was also charged with illegal parking on a roadway and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Huffman was released on a notice to appear and given a Putnam County Court date

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE ISP releases May activity report LASALLE – Illinois State Police (ISP) District 17 announced during the month of May, troopers handled 1,674 calls for service and assistance. Of these calls, 175 were to help motorists whose vehicles were disabled on area highways.

Criminal activities during the month included 11 arrests for other criminal offenses.

Traffic enforcement activities resulted in 381 drivers arrested for speeding and 106 cited for seat belt violations.

Driving under the influence arrests totaled six, while three apprehensions for other alcohol-related offenses were recorded. Troopers issued a total of 673 traffic citations and 644 written warnings to motorists during the month.

Troopers and weight inspectors issued three citations for overweight violations.

District 17 troopers handled 56 traffic crashes within the three county area of LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam. There was one fatal crash handled by troopers.

Save camping for the lake, not the left lane LASALLE – Illinois State Police (ISP) District 17 reminds drivers the left lane on all controlled access roadways (interstates and highways with on/off ramps) is for passing only.

This has been an Illinois law since Jan. 1, 2004. The law states a motorist cannot drive in the farthest left lane, on a roadway with multiple lanes dedicated to the same direction, unless actively passing. If a motorist is driving in the left lane and refuses to move to the right, when a faster traveling vehicle comes up behind, that motorist can receive a citation. This law is designed to reduce lane changes, keep traffic flowing smoothly, and above all else, ensure the safety of all motorists.

Those drivers who choose to stay in the left lane, no matter what, have traditionally been called “campers.” Just like at a campground, these drivers set up in the left lane and claim it as their own.

One consequence of left lane “campers” is the increased possibility of triggering a road rage incident.

Some drivers think they are making the roads safer by driving in the left lane, slowing traffic down. Studies show this is not the case.

Victims are being re-victimized by the state

t was a day like any other. On Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, dozens of human-service agency leaders attended a meeting in McHenry County hosted by Sen. Pam Althoff to discuss domestic violence. It was a crisp, beautiful fall day with many of us also thinking of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

And like any other day, three women died that day due to domestic violence. No doubt thousands more men, women and children endured horrific

emotional and physical abuse because their abuser made a choice to abuse them.

It was at this meeting that domestic violence agencies learned, for the first time, that there was no appropriation for them in the June 30, 2016, stopgap budget. Sure enough, it was confirmed the following afternoon that there would be no general revenue funds disbursed from the state to these service providers despite their signed contracts with the Department of Human Services.

These violence victims had been forgotten, and service agencies’ worst fears were realized. With zero general revenue funds and not enough private funds to bridge the gap, they were on their own.

Even more stunning than the casualness of the sidebar conversation wherein this bombshell was dropped was the

Some companies do so because paying these benefits would reduce their profit margins, according to federal documents and published reports.

To defend their decision, they say no law technically requires them to pay if a family does not apply for death benefits.

However, this thinking implies everyone is prepared for the inevitable.

We know that is not the case.

Each of us knows a family whose breadwinner died without telling their spouse about a life insurance policy purchased at work, or the young child left orphaned following a tragic accident, or the elderly matriarch ravaged by Alzheimer’s.

If a company must hang its authority upon the word ‘technically,’ than its actions cannot be considered morally right.

That is why we asked lawmakers to remove any ambiguity with regard to paying life insurance benefits.

The House and Senate agreed and sent to the governor HB 302 - The Life Insurance Reform Act. The legislation would require life insurance companies to review their records from the year 2000 to present and confirm the companies are not holding onto life insurance benefits that should have been paid.

To be clear, most life insurance companies cooperate fully with our request to confirm they do not hold life insurance benefits that should have been paid. Sadly, not all companies share that same responsibility. We pursued a legislative change only when the last argument left on the table was couched with the word “technically.”

I hope the governor agrees, and I ask him to sign The Life Insurance Reform Act into law.

realization the poorest communities would suffer the most. This harsh reality is always the case in such funding crises, yet that does not make the 50-70 percent loss of some agency budgets any less devastating.

The most infuriating aspect of this carelessness is that it could have been fixed as early as the beginning of this year and with minimal devastation as a result. Legislative leaders were made aware of their failure to provide domestic violence agencies with their contract funds, and the domestic violence community simply asked to be placed in parity with everyone else who was funded in the stop-gap bill.

It still has not happened.

HB 3259 and SB 1695, which are stand-alone bills, have been pending since early February 2017 and provide a mechanism for full domestic violence funding. Both bills con-

tain bipartisan support and a supermajority of co-sponsors, including three legislative leaders.

Yet, the indifference with which these violence victims are regarded by state government was made excruciatingly clear in the failure of the House Appropriations Human Services Committee to call HB 3259 for a vote immediately following the haunting testimony of the bill sponsor and domestic violence survivor (Rep. Litesa Wallace-Rockford); Isak Griffiths, executive director of Courage Connection in Champaign-Urbana; and transgender survivor, Makalah K., who boarded a cross country bus to escape her abuser and landed in Springfield – the only location she could find for a transgender person.

The hope that existed in the form of SB 6 has died. HB 109 shoved aside domestic violence victims

by offering only one-third of their promised FY ’17 funds and ignored the fact that, unlike the other entities in the bill, domestic violence providers have not received any general revenue funds for FY ‘17.

Moreover, pleas to amend HB 109 so that domestic violence agencies would be made whole in their contracts were met with an alarming level of condemnation. New legislation offered as a budget impasse solution has so many sticking points that a bi-partisan agreement seems like another long shot.

The one-year mark since domestic violence agencies have received any general revenue funds is fast approaching. Some agencies have shut their doors or eliminated staff, and all feel re-victimized by the state of Illinois.

Time and time again, they have been ignored, scolded for asking that

their stand-alone funding bills be called for a vote, told there is no piecemeal budgeting anymore (which is laughable seeing there is no full budgeting anymore, either) or callously reminded that others are also hurting. Some legislators have gone so far as to tell them to stop calling their offices.

The House finally passed HB 3259 the last week of the regular session, only to see it be stalled in the Senate. Gov. Rauner and his allies have failed to step up and right this situation by calling for and delivering action.

Why hasn’t State government righted this wrong? Can anyone in leadership truthfully answer this question?

More importantly, does anyone even care?

State capital full of lazy idiots, Norman says

just finished perusing some articles about how the Illinois General Assembly has gone for two years, and entering into a third, without approving any kind of annual budget for our once-great state.

A real newspaper columnist would write a scathing column about the ineptitude of these highly-paid people not being able to do one of the most basic and important parts of their job. A job that they still take a paycheck for.

Meanwhile, many of the state’s needed services are falling apart and going away due to their inactivity. A good writer would espouse his views and opinions about this subject, but it just makes me mad. So let me tell you about someone I think is much smarter and more valuable to the human race than anyone “working” in Springfield.

My dog, Norman, is possibly the smartest dog ever. He is the Stephen Hawking of the canine world. He just likes to hide his superior intelligence most of the time.

He is naturally inquisitive.

He stares at you and quizzically tilts his head whenever you eat something, wondering when you’re going to drop it. He likes to try to determine what kind of tasty, chewy treats we keep in the cat’s litterbox. He seems to be very curious about crotch and derriere odors. I believe he has kept a Rolodex of everyone’s particular smell. He also spends a great deal of his day wandering around the yard, trying to determine what is on the other side of the grass. Like Einstein searching for answers, he’ll dig up hundreds of linear feet of the aforementioned grass in an attempt to quench his thirst for knowledge. He’s simply brilliant.

The only thing that possibly surpasses Norman’s intelligence is his unquestioned bravery. He has selflessly defended me, my family, and home from several various, possibly terrorist, attacks

The list consists of garden hoses, shoes, American Girl doll accessories, socks, towels, solar lights, hummingbird feeders, eave spouts, wooden trim, vinyl trim, patio furniture seat cushions, patio furniture, welcome mats, watering cans, dog toys, things that look a little like dog toys but are not dog toys, frisbees, bushes, shrubs, small trees, larger trees, really big trees, potted plants, plants in hanging baskets, ground plants, etc. …

The list goes on and on and on.

And on. And possibly on some more.

His new thing is to run a fine-tooth comb through any kind of cardboard packaging dropped off by anyone working for FedEx, UPS or the United States Postal Service.

Like a bomb squad technician, Norman, without any concern for his own personal safety, will systematically dissect and inspect any and all packages

Just the other day, my wife came home to find an estimated 20-foot-by-50-foot section of our front yard covered in a white, cottony substance. Apparently a package had been dropped off containing several milkweed plants that were to be utilized for attracting Monarch butterfly migrations. He must have really taken his time with this one because it was all over the place. You can never be too careful. He is so brave.

Well, I have to go now. Norman has a check-up at the veterinarian’s office tomorrow, and I’m supposed to take one of his stool samples with me.

So I’ll most likely be following him around the farmyard for the next couple of hours with my Ziploc baggie watching his

nether regions waiting for him to squat down and do another thing that he’s really good at. I did the same thing two weeks ago. Not once, but twice. (The first sample just wasn’t one of his better efforts.) From that little adventure I learned to always call the vet’s office to make sure you can get an appointment before you spend the day following your dog around waiting for him to take a … sample.

And by the way, Norman thinks that the Illinois General Assembly is a bunch of lazy idiots. I told you he was smart.

16th annual ‘Kops and Kids’ fishing derby held on June 3 On June 3, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office held its 16th annual “Kops and Kids” fishing derby at the Jeff and Leslie Brooks residence. “Kops and Kids” is a program initiated by Sheriff Doyle and focusing on building a trust and positive interaction between law enforcement and kids.

Approximately 25 children participated in the fishing derby. Each child was provided fishing gear.

After fishing, a cookout for the kids was held at the Hennepin Park. Each child received a T-shirt and a prize at the end of the day.

Two bikes, donated by the Putnam County Rotary, an IPOD touch donated by

Deputy Josh Randall and a one-year gift certificate to Gramma Rosie’s Sweet Treats was also given away in a drawing. The winners of this year’s bikes were Camryn Christiansen and Brock Boedigheimer.

Sarah Johnson’s name was originally drawn for the girl’s bike and she donated back as she had just won a bike.

As this event is completely funded by donations, without the generous support of our community, this day would not have been possible. Sheriff Kevin Doyle, deputies and staff would like to give a big thanks to everyone that contributed.

Granville Masonic Lodge observes 300th anniversary of first Grand Lodge

BARNES Special to the PCR GRANVILLE — On St. John the Baptist’s Day, June 24, 1717, four London Lodges met at the Goose and Gridiron Tavern as a Grand Lodge and elected a Grand Master to preside over them. Thus was born modern organized Freemasonry as we know it today. This was done to standardize and formalize ritual and ceremonial practices.

The organization of Grand Lodges quickly spread throughout Europe and to overseas possessions including the American colonies. In England, there was a period of furious rivalries between lodges and for a time there were two competing grand lodges. They eventually reconciled and the United Grand Lodge of England was organized in 1813.

It is regarded at the Mother Grand Lodge of all modern speculative Freemasonry. After the American Revolution, Masons in each state

organized its own Grand Lodge. As settlement moved westward, so did Masonry. As territories and states organized and were admitted to the union, so were Grand Lodges formed, usually chartered from a neighboring existing Grand Lodge jurisdiction.

The first Grand Lodge in Illinois was formed by a small number of lodges in 1822. Bro. Shadrach Bond, first governor of the state, was elected Grand Master. This Grand Lodge lasted until only 1827, when it ceased operating, a period that coincided with the short-lived anti-masonic national political movement.

By 1839, Freemasonry was rebounding and the current Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of the State of Illinois was organized in Jacksonville on April 6, 1840.

In 1869, Putnam Lodge 626 of Granville was chartered; it ceased operating in 1871. No reason is given in the annals of the Grand Lodge for its short existence. The current

Granville Lodge 1093 was chartered on Oct. 10, 1922, and meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month at its lodge hall at 406 S. McCoy St. Members of Granville Lodge will commemorate the 300th anniversary by holding a family picnic at the Veteran’s Park shelter in Granville on Saturday, June 24, starting at 1 p.m. Anyone interested in learning more about Freemasonry is invited to attend. Those planning to attend are asked to call 815-481-2292 to let them know how many will attend.

Freemasonry is a non-sectarian, non-denominational, non-theological, monotheistic religious society of men who gather in fellowship and brotherly love. It teaches men to live moral and upright lives by the use of symbolism and allegory.

Gateway Services will hold fourth annual 5K Superhero Showdown Dust off your capes, put your running shoes on PRINCETON — Gateway Services Inc. will hold its fourth annual 5K Superhero Showdown on Saturday, June 24, at the Bureau County Fairground, 811 W. Peru St. in Princeton.

Preservation association will host luncheon MAGNOLIA — The Magnolia Township Preservation Association will be serving a salad luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on June 24 in the community room of the museum building in Magnolia.

Vietnam-era veterans honored PRINCETON — At their regular meeting on May 5 at the Prouty Building, members of the Princeton-Illinois Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored chapter families and their relatives who served in the military during the Vietnam War Era 1962 to 1975.

Since 2013 the Princeton chapter has partnered with the Department of Defense in commemorating the 50th anniversary of

the Vietnam War and honoring those who answered the call to duty and served with valor.

Presented by Beverly Larson, chapter chairman of the Vietnam War Commemoration, 47 certificates of appreciation were distributed to those members attending or absent, recognizing their service members. A packet accompanied each certificate containing the chapter lapel pin and card, two Department of Defense

During the business meeting, chapter regent Diana Williamson announced awards won at the Illinois DAR State Conference in Bloomington April 28-30. Reports were given by six conference attendees. Program ideas were requested for 2017-18.

Members are encouraged to update yearbook information and to bring books and magazines for donation to the veterans home in LaSalle.

Williamson announced the deadline of May 22 for reservations to the district meeting and mini-tour to be held in DeKalb on June 1. Car-pooling will be arranged. The chapter will again participate in Memorial Day services.

Festival 56 will present ’Disenchanted!’

Performances will be June 23-July 1 PRINCETON — Festival 56 will opens its summer season with “Disenchanted!” a musical featuring an uninhibited bevy of fairy tale princesses who storm the stage to retell their stories for modern audiences. The production runs from June 23 to July 1 at Princeton’s Grace Performing Arts Center and is recommended for adult audiences.

The princess stories range in origin from 5th-century China to 19th-century Denmark.

But they have one thing in common — they were all Done by Disney. And now it’s time for some feisty feminist revenge.

Lavish costumes, bawdy songs and in-your-face parody combine to give audiences a new image of 10 fabled ladies: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Belle (the Beauty

who loved the Beast), Hua Mulan (a warrior princess), Rapunzel, Pocahontas, the Little Mermaid, the Princess Who Kissed the Frog (actually, the little brat threw him against a wall instead), and Badroulbadour (the bride of Aladdin in the Arabian Nights).

The show opens with Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty in “One More Happ’ly Ever After,” or, what it’s really like to be a princess. Other songs include the Disney version of Pocahontas vs. history in “Squaw Girl,” a surprise appearance by Peter Pan in “I Hate Green” and “Two Legs,” about what really happened to the Little Mermaid. Watch for “Beasts of Burden,” with Tarzan’s Jane, and “Finally,” by a princess of color.

Book, music and lyrics for “Disenchanted!” were written by Dennis T. Giacino. The show won the seventh annual New Jersey Playwrights Contest

and went from there to off-Broadway and nationwide performances.

Audience members will learn such culinary tidbits as: Where was the first ice cream sundae created? (hint: it’s the home of the Wildcats), and who invented the first marshmallow? It’s a riddle only a Sphinx could solve.

Yearly Quaker meeting gets underway today MCNABB — The Clear Creek Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) will host its 2017 meeting June 21-25 at the historic meeting house south of McNabb. Workshops and talks by featured speakers are open to the public at no charge. This year’s theme is “Open Hearts.”

The meeting is a retreat for approximately 200 Quakers who attend from throughout Illinois, Iowa and Indiana. It offers workshops, speakers, recreational programs, business meetings, camping facilities, programs for children, and meals prepared on-site.

The Clear Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends is the oldest continuous monthly meeting in Illinois.

The meeting-house at 14365 N. 350th Ave. (“Quaker Lane”) was built in

1875, although Quakers had worshipped at the site of what is now the Friends Cemetery, where Quaker abolitionist Benjamin Lundy is buried, since 1843.

Evening programs are 7:30-8:45 p.m., beginning Wednesday with Zach Moon’s presentation “Such a Time as This.” Moon is an assistant professor of pastoral theology at Chicago Theological Seminary and the author of “Coming Home: Ministry That Matters with Veterans and Military Families.”

On Thursday evening, Clear Creek Monthly Meeting will describe what it means to be a monthly meeting in McNabb, and they celebrate their 175th anniversary this year.

Marshall, who will explore “Knowing, Being, Doing: The Journey toward Opened Hearts.” Marshall is dean of Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Ind. His most recent publication, “Quaker Contributions to an Integration of Spirituality and Leadership,” appeared in the Spring 2015 edition of “Journal of Religious Leadership.”

Afternoon workshops, 2:30-3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will address aging, conscientious objection, landscaping Quaker property, addiction, Quakers and Gaza, refugee advocacy, hand puppetry and yoga.

Alice Howenstine of the Upper Fox Valley Meeting will give the Plummer lecture at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

M-P Relay for Life held June 10 in Henry Event raises just under $90,000 HENRY — On June 10, almost 200 participants on 16 teams worked to “Create More Birthdays” at the annual Marshall-Putnam Relay For Life event, raising just under $90,000.

Teams from the two counties have been working tirelessly all year to raise money for this cause.

Since 1997 this event has raised more than $1.5 million in an effort to support cancer research and put an end to cancer.

Returning to the Henry-Senachwine High School track, teams gathered Saturday evening for a full line-up of activities, including fun and games for local youth, a water balloon toss, team fundraisers and the new pie auction event. Those in attendance also enjoyed great food provided by several teams.

This year, Darrel Crook served as the honorary speaker, sharing his story and stressing the importance of a positive attitude, optimism and a good support system. Comparing people to Legos, Crook reminded people that “we are made to connect.” He reminded everyone that Relay is an event that connects people all over the world in a common goal.

This quilt is registered with the state of Illinois as a historic quilt, and will be part of the Vintage Quilt Turn Down at the Reddick Mansion on July 15 and 16.

Amy Anderson of Henry was this year’s recipient of the Dick Bernardi Award, and Team Zebra awarded Team Mexichem with the Team Zebra Spirit Award.

This award was started last year in remembrance of Diane Russell who founded Team Zebra.

The evening culminated in a balloon launch at

dusk, sponsored by the Mexichem Team and the luminaria ceremony where all purchased luminarias lined the track in memory of loved ones lost, those fighting and survivors who have overcome cancer.

The funds raised will continue to support research into the causes and cures for cancer, as well as comfort those undergoing treatment.

The American Cancer

Society (ACS) Relay For Life movement is the largest fundraising event in the world geared toward putting an end to cancer.

Money raised supports education and prevention efforts, funds groundbreaking cancer research and provides free information and other services for people with cancer. Since 1946, ACS has invested more than $4 billion in cancer research.

at the Reddick Mansion.

The Mansion Association would like the form completed and returned

by Friday, July 7. The actual quilts should be delivered to the Mansion on Wednesday, July 12.

The Vintage Quilt Turn Downs will be at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

After the quilt presentation at the Mansion, refreshments will be served. The cost is $8 per person, and all money raised will be used for the maintenance and restoration of the Reddick Mansion.
