The new Illinois Valley Veterans Memorial Bridge, which spans the Illinois River on Route 89 and connects Putnam and Bureau counties, was scheduled to open for traffic on June 18. While construction in the area near the $41 million bridge will still be taking place for some time while workers put the finishing touches on the major project that began in 2016, the new bridge will be providing a wider and safer path across the river. The old bridge, built in 1934, will be demolished.

Welcome news for board: County revenues are up over last year Spending trimmed; treasurer reports improved finances

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Putnam County Treasurer Kevin Kunkel reports the county’s revenue for the month of May was higher than it was during the same month last year. This is welcome news after the county was previously forced to take an interfund loan to meet expenses.

During the June 11 Putnam County Board meeting, Kunkel said May’s General Fund revenue was $215,578.79, up from the $153,988.26 received in May 2017.

Kevin Kunkel A substantial porPutnam tion of the increased County revenue came from treasurer the state income tax, the personal property replacement tax, a state grant that reimbursed a portion of the Office of Emergency Management salaries, and a 911 reimbursement.

“Also, all offices have curbed their spending, and I don’t see a problem finishing the year,” Kunkel said.

In April, the board approved an interfund loan of no more than $375,000 from the county’s Federal Aid Matching Fund until the next tax revenue disbursements are received in July.

According to what Kunkel said at that time, one of the biggest impacts on the county’s budget was prior to its adoption, the state had told the county it would receive approximately $280,000 in Personal Property Replacement Tax funds.

However, six months after budget approval, Springfield announced Putnam County would receive only $205,000.

Additional expenses that helped deplete the county’s reserves were

a lengthy, yet dropped lawsuit that cost $260,000 over four years; unavoidable expenses to repair and renovate the courthouse that cost approximately $360,000; increased health care costs; and a loss of industrial revenue.

To help reduce costs, board members declined mileage reimbursements, and the courthouse’s hours of operation were also altered. Kunkel previously estimated the change in hours would save the county almost $40,000 a year.

Ongoing tax bill errors Board members Duane Calbow and Luke Holly questioned Kunkel regarding the taxation errors recently made by Putnam County Clerk Dan Kuhn’s office.

The tax bills for Granville were sent to residents without the village’s levy included. Kunkel’s office has taken responsibility for correcting the situation by issuing a second revised bill, and he said his office is still working on the issue.

However, this year’s mistake has become another in a series of errors

by Kuhn’s office.

“This has become an ongoing problem each year, and I’d like to know what steps are being taken to correct it,” Holly said.

Kuhn was not in attendance at the meeting, but previous errors have included the school district’s five-year levy being billed in one installment, and Senachwine Township not having its rates increased as requested.

Courthouse security Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle announced courthouse security will be increased during the upcoming trial of Clifford A. Andersen Jr., slated to begin on July 9.

Access to the building will be possible only through the north entrance and will include a metal detector as well as the presence of law enforcement officers.

Andersen, 68, of Standard is charged with murdering his sisterin-law, Deborah Dewey. He is also

charged with concealing her body in a shallow grave in the yard of a house for which he was caretaker.

Dewey, 62, of Ladd was reported missing in August 2016.

Highway Department The board approved the bid from Gensini Excavating Inc. of Princeton to excavate and pour the foundation for the county’s new salt storage building. Gensini was awarded the contract with its bid of $83,600, beating the offers from MYS Inc. of Palos Heights and Wm. Aupperle & Sons Inc. of Morton.

Engineer Pat Sloan said he estimated $90,000 for the work, and added that since the building’s estimated cost was $30,000, he would be able to seek quotes rather than putting it out for additional bidding.

The estimated $120,000 total project cost is being funded through money from the Motor Fuel Tax Fund.

The board also approved IDOT’s request to establish Power Plant Road as a Class III designated truck route. The new designation is based on increased width and weight limits.

In other board news: • The county renewed its health insurance contract with the Central Management Agency of Illinois, which included a 5.7 percent increase, and the county has maintained its A+ rating with the agency.

• The board approved the request from Fish ‘n Fun Inc. to sell liquor during its annual pancake breakfast scheduled for Aug. 5 in McNabb.

• The board approved the appointment of Janet Rodda as a Putnam County Conservation District trustee.

• The board also discussed a possible consolidation of the courthouse’s post office boxes as a way to help reduce expenses. The county has seven boxes that cost $512 a year.

Some privacy issues were raised, and another concern was that the expense of changing stationery and other materials with mailing addresses could counter any savings realized by consolidating the boxes.

Regional exodus continues in Illinois Valley Population data from U.S. Census Bureau shows downward trend is continuing

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com OGLESBY — Population estimates recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau show Illinois residents are continuing to decide to try their luck living elsewhere.

For the counties of the Illinois Valley, the 2010 Census counted 113,924 LaSalle County residents.

The 2017 population estimates show

a decline to 110,067, a loss of 3,857 people and the tax revenue they helped provide.

Nearby Putnam County, the state’s smallest, also suffered a population drop. The 2010 Census total of 6,006 has diminished to 2017’s estimate of 5,727, a loss of 279 residents.

Bureau County was home to 34,978 people in 2010, but that figure has dropped to 2017’s estimate of 33,243, a loss of 1,735 residents.

Looking closer at those figures, the Ottawa-Peru micropolitan area population dropped from 154,908 in 2010 to an estimated 149,307 residents in 2017. In LaSalle County’s smaller areas, the populations of Tonica and Lostant have respectively decreased by 40 and 12 during that period.

In Bureau County, Princeton lost 77 residents in that time, Spring Valley 319, Wyanet 48, and Walnut’s population decreased by 81.

Among the factors driving citizens from the state include the increasingly high taxation rates, among the highest in the country. Other negative aspects of Illinois government that residents have found repellent

are a dysfunctional Legislature; a business environment seen by many as being unfriendly; and the inability to enact the sweeping and significant reforms needed to dig the state out of its financial hole.

Illinois experienced a net loss of 37,508 residents in 2016 and another 33,703 in 2017.

“Workers and families will only live where they can make a good living and have a healthy quality lifestyle,” Ivan Baker, president and CEO of the North Central Illinois Economic Development Council (NCIEDC) said.

“Good-paying jobs are necessary, and an affordable cost of living with a reasonable tax structure.

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s administration expects to present a balanced budget at its Thursday, July 12, board meeting, the college’s audit-finance committee learned at a recent meeting.

“We have reduced operating costs for a number of years by leaving personnel positions vacant and reducing other costs,” said Cheryl Roelfsema, the college’s vice president for business services and finance/treasurer, in a statement.

“Reduced state funding and lower enrollments resulted in a deficit in FY2016 but FY2017 had a surplus and a surplus is projected for FY2018,” Roelfsema said.

Fiscal 2019 operating revenues are $521,669, or 2.4 percent higher than the previous fiscal year. Expenditures are $694,669, or 3.2 percent higher than 2018, according to a news release issued by IVCC. See IVCC, Page 9

Of the state’s 102 counties, the majority suffered a loss of residents. Only Cook, DuPage, Monroe, Will, Grundy, Williamson, Woodford, Kendall, Johnson, Kane, Lake, McHenry and McLean Counties have benefited from population increases.

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Illinois has the worst fiscal climate in the nation and the worst bond rating.

Baker said the private sector must be encouraged to grow, expand and create jobs, but added that won’t happen unless the state’s fiscal issues are addressed and the tax climate is made as competitive as possible, including property, sales, income, franchise, unemployment and worker’s comp taxes.

Paving the way for infrastructure improvements Almost $40 million budgeted for the roads and bridges of the 38th District

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com SPRINGFIELD — Illinois state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, recently announced her constituents will begin seeing the benefits of almost $40 million worth of improvements to the 38th District’s roads and bridges during the next fiscal year.

The projects are part of the Illinois State Sen. Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) Sue Rezin Improvement ProR-Morris gram that assesses 38th District and prioritizes projects over a six-year span. The 2019 fiscal year’s efforts

for the district will be comprised of 25 projects estimated to cost $39.7 million.

“Infrastructure is the lifeblood of an economy,” Rezin said in a news release.

“Ensuring our roads and bridges are in working condition is vital to jobs, safe travel and business.

IDOT’s plan for our region this upcoming fiscal year will create hundreds of good-paying jobs and will help all of us get to our destinations safely,” she said.

From 2020-24, IDOT has scheduled 66 projects within the 38th District covering 83.79 miles budgeted to cost $319.8 million.

Roadway and bridge repairs for the upcoming fiscal year will take place in LaSalle, Wilmington, Minooka, Joliet and New Lenox, as well as in several areas of LaSalle, Bureau, Putnam and Grundy counties.

For Putnam County, there’s $1.15 million scheduled to be spent during the next fiscal year on the bridge over the Illinois River near Hennepin. This Illinois Major Bridge Program Project will also

include an additional $36 million to be spent from 2020-24 on a new deck, painting and other rehabilitation work.

There will also be $168,000 shared with Gov. Bruce LaSalle County this Rauner upcoming fiscal year for deck sealing on various bridge preservation projects.

From 2020-24 in Putnam County, there are also $2.35 million worth of bridge replacements, land acquisition and utility adjustments scheduled for two bridges on Route 89 that span Clear Creek and its tributary.

Pat Sloan, Putnam County’s highway engineer, said a couple of the Putnam County projects on this plan were already programmed or promised. He added that the ongoing infrastructure needs and lack of funding required to meet them, particularly in Putnam County, still haven’t been addressed.

These projects are related to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s recently

announced plan to invest $11.05 billion in the state’s roadways over the next six years, including the $2.2 billion of state and federal funding for the projects of the upcoming fiscal year.

Projects are chosen that will provide the most economic benefit to local communities, and IDOT is utilizing approaches that will be the most cost-effective.

“Investing in transportation creates jobs and economic opportunity, improves safety, and makes Illinois a better place to raise a family,” Rauner said.

“This plan will make Illinois more competitive while protecting the interests of the taxpayers,” he said.

Based on current funding, IDOT’s six-year plan is hoping to improve a total of almost 2,000 miles of road and 525 bridges that are maintained by the state. More than 750 miles of local roads and more than 900,000 square feet of local bridges are included in the program’s plans.

On June 2, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) held its 17th annual “Kops and Kids” Fishing Derby at the Jeff and Leslie Brooks’ residence. “Kops and Kids” is a program initiated by Sheriff Kevin Doyle and focuses on building a trusting and positive interaction between law enforcement and kids. Approximately 30 children participated in the fishing derby, and each was provided fishing gear. After fishing, a cookout was held at Hennepin Park, and two bikes, donated by the Putnam County Rotary and a one-year gift certificate to Grandma Rosie’s Sweet Treats, were given away in a drawing. The winners of this year’s bikes were Jaden Siegmann and Alan Castro. At the end of the day, each child received a T-shirt and prize. This event is completely funded by donations and would not be possible without the support of the community. Hennepin readies July 4th celebration ‘Thunder on the Illinois’ in its 42nd year HENNEPIN — Hennepin is well prepared to celebrate its 42nd annual Fourth of July celebration “Thunder on the Illinois.”

Scheduled for Wednesday, July 4 in Hennepin, the event will have several family friendly activities, including the “Movin’ for Music” 5K run/walk that will be followed by a pancake and sausage breakfast sponsored by the Putnam County

Music Boosters.

From noon to 4 p.m. will be the “Cruise-In” car show at Bassi Park.

Other events will be a bags tournament, Bingo, a beer garden, inflatables, and water fights for children.

The Putnam County FFA will cook pork chops, and several other food vendors will also be in attendance.

The Citizen of the Year will be presented at 4:15 p.m. on the courthouse

stage, along with performances by the chorus and the Little Panteras.

“Bagshot Row,” a 1950s-’60s British Invasion band, will perform at 5 p.m., the golf cart parade will be at 6:45 p.m., and “Snap Shot” will perform from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

And the main event, fireworks over the river, will begin at 9:30 p.m. with the band resuming play from 10 p.m. to midnight.

LASALLE COUNTY SHERIFF

DUI arrest At 5:20 a.m. on June 12, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office charged Michael Dollinger, 23, of Toluca with DUI, DUI .08 or higher, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident following an accident on East 1150th Street in Magnolia Township. Dollinger was released on a notice to appear and given a Putnam County court date. Dollinger and a female passenger both refused medical treatment at the scene.

Accident At 6 a.m. on June 12, deputies investigated a single-vehicle accident at North 18th Road and East 1050th Road in Eagle Township. Stephen Selvidge, 36, of Streator was westbound on North 18th Road when he became distracted and went off the road to the south and into a field. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued.

Audit-finance also reviewed the Information Technology Services strategic plan for 2018-20 that includes replacement of obsolete Smart technology with interactive projectors, an online student application, and a website redesign expected to be launched in September.

The committee also learned high school students enrolled in dual credit courses continue to account for about 10 percent of overall enrollment. The 1,004 students enrolled in dual credit in 2017-18 accounted for more than 5,967 credit hours. More than 120 paid only a $5 registration fee due to IVCC’s tuition waiver for free and reduced lunch-eligible students.

MARK — Tyler R. Schrowang, 28, of Mark died Friday, June 15, 2018.

Tyler was born Nov. 21, 1989, in Peoria to Kenton and Vera (Haig) Schrowang.

He graduated from Putnam County High School. He was a laborer and operator at Ridley Feed in Mendota. He was a member of the Teamsters Union.

Survivors include his father, Kenton Schrowang of Granville; his mother, Vera Schrowang of Hennepin; one son, Elijah; two daughters, Ella and Madelyn; one brother, Kyle Schrowang of Granville; three sisters, Linnea (Woody) Herbert of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Shayna Wortz of Mark and Reiley Wortz of Hennepin; one niece, Harlyn; and one nephew, Carson.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Services will be at noon Wednesday, June 20, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with the Rev. Karen Karczewski officiating. Burial will be in the Granville Cemetery in Granville. Visitation will be prior to the service, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to his children at the Granville National Bank.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Schrowang, Woody Herbert, Cody Newhalfen, Gordon Wortz, Wes Olinger, Jeremy Lucas and Bob Newhalfen.

DeRubeis did two weeks of motorcycle school and two weeks handson training, before hitting the road on a state-owned 2013 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide.

“The motorcycle is great for public relations. It’s a great ice breaker.

Every day people come up and ask me about it. Motorists get a kick out of it. They’ll give me a thumbs up,” DeRubeis observed.

Sometimes children will be drawn to the Harley-Davidson at gas stations and other stops he makes.

DeRubeis said he will let the youngsters have their photos taken sitting on the machine. With helmet, gloves and knee-high boots, DeRubeis also makes for a unique sight.

In one unusual case, DeRubeis pulled over a woman on a serious traffic violation, but the woman was so enchanted with the motorcycle, she had her photo taken posing next to it.

The advantages of a motorcycle are many: it is cheaper on gas, can get into tight places a larger vehicle cannot, can weave through heavy traffic and is useful for escort duty.

The Harley-Davidson also presents a smaller silhouette — in other words, it has a certain stealth.

“I’ve had cars go 100 mph past me in the next lane. After I pulled them over, they said they never saw me there,” DeRubeis recalled.

As certain drivers see less, DeRubeis sees more.

“I can see a lot more on a motorcycle, like seeing people talking on cell phones,” DeRubeis said.

The Harley also has disadvantages. The motorcycle must remain in the garage during uncooperative weather. DeRubeis can’t transport a suspect or a stranded driver, or carry all the equipment carried by a car.

Nonetheless, DeRubeis, who previously worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and Toluca police, is happy on his Harley, saying, “I have the best job there is. I get to ride on two wheels.”

Grandparents had better do more to fix America’s mess

I

saw a bumper sticker the other day: Ask me how much I love my grandkids.

But do we really love them so much?

In our selfishness, speaking generally, we of the Baby Boom and earlier generations seem to be somewhat complicit in the following problems: U.S. debt is greater now than at the height of World War II, which had to be financed primarily with debt. The recent tax “reform” bill has some good points, yet it is to be paid for with $1.5 trillion in additional debt, which the retiree generation won’t pay for — their grandkids will.

Most of us retirees still receive more from Social Security than we paid into it. That is changing, and for our grandkids, it will be the opposite.

We old fogeys receive much, much more in health care via Medicare than we pay into it, and the program will place financial heavy burdens on our grandkids.

Dysfunction in Illinois state government over the decades will burden our grandkids with solving the wreckage.

Education is critical to our

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan grandkids’ future. And the competitive challenges they will face are enormous. Because of population differences, China has more honor students in its classrooms than we have students.

Yet, cheering under the Friday night lights seems more important to many grandparents than encouraging the grandkids to excel in the classroom and set their sights high.

And the U.S. is dis-investing in higher education at a time China is pouring more and more into their system, which is now challenging the U.S. in critical scientific fields.

Our once-vaunted interstate system and airports crumble while, based on my extensive travels as a visiting professor in China, ever more bullet trains and interstate-quality highways are surpassing our logistical support system.

All of these realities push daunting burdens onto those grandkids we love so much.

What to do? Here is a modest suggestion.

On my travels around the state and beyond, I often make pit stops at a McDonald’s to recharge my caffeine. I almost always notice (especially mid-mornings) one or more coffee klatches of 4 to 10 locals of

the retiree age class (which doesn’t have to be very old today). I’ll bet the folks gather almost daily for an hour or more.

I know many seniors volunteer and do good works, yet I think many of us could do more to prepare a better future for our grandkids, rather than just throw up our hands in despair.

According to a 2015 report from the Illinois Department of Revenue, retirees represent fully 25 percent of all Illinois tax filers.

This huge slice of society has rich experience, knowledge, even wisdom, and many are found at the coffee klatches.

I suggest the coffee groups devote half — just half — of their time over caffeine to addressing our problems at the local, state, even national levels. I am confident at least one at each coffee klatch has declared, along these lines: “A blockhead could do a better job than our elected officials!”

Since these coffee drinkers appear to be anything but blockheads, I further propose creation of a “Your Town Coffee Klatch Civics Club (come up with a better name, please).” Devote the first half of a morning gathering to selecting an informal chair and then a topic of interest, maybe a local one initially, such as: How are our schools doing?

The chair might ask one or two of the group to do some Internet research. In this case, check out how the local schools compare with

those throughout the state, remembering that average isn’t good enough.

Once information is compiled, discuss the situation. Are the schools performing at high levels, and if not, what thoughts might there be around the table as to how local public education might be improved? This might require some more research, maybe even talking with a local superintendent or principal.

Continue the discussion for several sessions, then focus on some proposals the group thinks might be forwarded to the local school board for consideration.

I think coffee klatchers would be amazed by how sensitive local officials, state legislators, even congressmen are to proposals that show obvious thought and some research.

Then, on to the next topic, maybe a tough one like the state public employee pension mess.

Even if your first efforts don’t change the world, the work should develop constructive discussion and will be good for the brain.

I worry that many readers might think the above is cockamamie (what’s new? readers chortle).

But somehow, retirees have to look to the future of their grandkids, whom they love so much.

Extension recognizes council volunteers

OGLESBY — Dedicated volunteers were recognized at the recent University of Illinois Extension – Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Multi-County Unit Council meeting on June 5 on the Illinois Valley Community College campus.

Extension Council members serve as a catalyst and leader in shaping the vision for Extension in support of the citizens of the counties in the Unit. Members represent their county to provide input to local issues, needs and concerns that can be addressed through Extension’s unbiased and research-based educational programs and services.

Council members are advocates and promote and connect local people to Extension’s educational programming including Agriculture and Natural Resources, 4-H Youth Development, Community & Economic Development and Family, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences. The council meets on a regular basis to oversee programming and finances.

This inventive, colorful cast of five performers acts out the story of what happens in the spring when birds begin to sing and plants begin to bloom. Frog, a cheerful soul, and Toad, who worries a lot, wake up from hibernation and resume their friendship. Difficulties arise when Frog sees that Toad is sad because he never receives mail. He sends Toad a letter, but unfortunately the mail carrier is a Snail. Meantime, cheerful Frog and grumpy Toad enjoy all

sorts of adventures. Eventually fall and winter arrive, there are scary stories to tell, and the two friends attempt sledding in the snow with predictable results. At last the Snail delivers the uplifting letter, and the year ends with a happy Christmas.

Brothers Robert and Willie Reale collaborated on the stage version of “A Year with Frog and Toad.”

Robert composed the music while Willie wrote the book and lyrics.

The show was originally presented on Broadway by Bob Boyett, Adrianne Lobel, Michael Gardner, Lawrence Horowitz and Roy Furman, and had its world premiere at the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis, Minn. Festival 56’s 2018 summer production is sponsored by Hornbaker Gardens and Langhenry,

Summer is here with the promise of warm temperatures. Weather is one reason why summer is such a popular season to tie the knot.

But just because sunny skies and rising mercury are par for the course, that does not mean Mother Nature won’t invite herself to the festivities — and attempt to upstage happy couples in the process.

• Embrace the rain. Vivid skies with lightning or overcast days can make for unique and striking wedding photography. Couples needn’t look at the downside of rain, but rather they should see the opportunities for one-of-a-kind memories.

Did you know? ‘Tying the knot’ steeped in tradition Should a person hear that a couple “tied the knot,” it’s immediately known that they got married.

But just when and where does the term “tying the knot” come from?

The phrase “tying the knot” is steeped in tradition, though the origins of the phrase remain open for debate.

One origin story states that tying the knot can be traced back to the Roman empire, when brides wore girdles that were tied in knots, and the groom had to eventually untie those knots to consummate the marriage.

Tying the knot also may be traced to the custom of handfasting. The marriage contract was established between a bride and a groom by joining their hands together and tying them.

Although accounts vary as to whether the hands were tied only during the ceremony or later, this is believed to be an ancient Renaissance or Celtic tradition.

Others speculate that the phrase

traces its origins to Hindu weddings in which brides and grooms tied a necklace of flowers as part of wedding tradition.

Yet another theory suggests that the phrase can be traced back to the knotted string that supported beds prior to the use of metal springs.

Therefore, in order to make a marriage bed, couples first needed to tie the knot.

Knots also represent a dif ficult-to-break bond, which is why they have long been associated with marriage.

In one unity tradition, couples may braid or knot together three strands, with one representing the bride, one symbolizing the groom, and the third representing God as they join together in faith.

S i m i l a rly, t h e p h r a s e “ g e t ting hitched” is associated with knot-tying as well.

The saying implies that two people are being tied together just like a horse is tied, or hitched, to a wagon.

7 wedding tricks to make the big day easier Couples should take their cues from the voices of experience METRO NEWS SERVICE Wedding planning is no small task. From sending out engagement announcements to gifting guests with take-home favors, a couple will pore over scores of details as they plan their weddings.

As if selecting a photographer or choosing the right passed appetizers isn’t challenging enough, some unknown variables are sure to pop up on the big day as well.

Couples can take their cues from others who have walked the aisle before them with these tricks of the trade, which may help couples’ wedding days go smoothly.

1) Host everything at a single location. Couples who want to simplify their wedding day can select a site that can host the ceremony and reception and also house guests. The cost of such

facilities may be more affordable than couples think, as transportation costs will be minimal and the venue may offer discounts on group packages.

2) Think about a day coordinator. Couples who cannot afford a wedding planner to handle all of the details often find that a dayof-service provider is within their budget. This person can handle all of the details of the wedding day so brides and grooms can fully immerse themselves in the festivities.

3) Bring extra cash. Unexpected expenses may pop up. Couples may have to feed an extra member of the band or a guest who was able to get a babysitter at the last minute. Brides and grooms may want to offer a bigger tip than anticipated to the waitstaff or deejay who went above and beyond.

4) Learn how to bustle. Walking around with a free-flowing train all day can become tiring for brides. Brides should make sure that one person practices how to bustle the train and will step in to do so for the reception. Also, it may not be the height of fashion, but having a garbage bag on hand

can keep the train clean during inclement weather, or if the bride has to trek across grass or soil for photo opportunities.

5) Give an outgoing person a job.

Enlist a boisterous friend or family member to wrangle guests for photo opportunities. He or she can be the photographer’s helper and give the happy couple one less thing to do.

6) Stock the bathroom. Some venues will have courtesy items

for their guests, but couples also should bring their own necessities, such as breath mints, toothpaste, extra pantyhose, hairspray, lip gloss, and/or sanitary pads.

7) Be all smiles. Couples can’t predict everything that will happen on their wedding day, but they can help create the mood. Smiling couples can make things better for everyone, even when zippers break or someone gets the chicken instead of the salmon.

LIBRARY NOTES Putnam County Library District

LaSalle Public Library

The Putnam County Library District has announced the following upcoming programs: • A traveling naturalist from the Peoria Park District: Forest Park Nature Center will present “Operation Migration,” a science program that sparks interest in nature for kids, at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at the library in Granville and at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at the library in Hennepin.

• A drum circle will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 30, in Granville. Participants can bring drums to join the drum circle with Kevin Kramer.

Every week during July, a new kit from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will be displayed in Granville. Week 1 will be Illinois State Symbols.

The LaSalle Public Library will host bat naturalists Dan and Sharon Peterson at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 28, with a program that will educate and entertain with exciting facts about bat species.

Using an interactive, multimedia presentation, Dan and Sharon will introduce the audience to many bat species of the world, as well as focusing in more detail on species native to Illinois, and dispelling negative myths. Participants will discover how bats echolocate, what kinds of foods they eat, and contributions they make to the environment, to humans and the places bats inhabit. They will also learn about the difficulties facing bats and what can be done to conserve these remarkable animals.

Following the presentation, the Petersons will pro-

vide a unique opportunity for the audience by featuring live bats. Both the Egyptian Fruit Bat and an African Straw-Colored Fruit Bat will provide opportunities for the audience to learn more about these bats, and for many audience members, provide a surprising hands-on experience with these fantastic night animals. The Petersons, in addition to their bats, will bring Bella, the sweet-smelling skunk.

This program, for all ages, is free and open to the public. This program is made possible through funding by the Alwin C. Carus Trust. Children under the age of 8 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
