Behavioral health clinic in Princeton will serve Bureau, Putnam, Marshall, LaSalle counties

Construction will begin soon on a certified community behavioral health clinic in Princeton.

The St. Margaret’s Center for Holistic Health & Wellness will be established and located in the adjacent space in the Center for Family Health, 1916 N. Main St., in Princeton. St. Margaret’s will be the recipient of a $2 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for each of the next two years.

The center will work primarily with residents of La Salle, Bureau, Putnam and Marshall counties.

Mike Miroux, LCPC, was hired as the new program director.

Miroux said he is excited to return to his hometown area.

“I think the Center for Holistic Health and Wellness will be looked at as a leader and model for providing innovate and effective behavioral health services in rural communities,” Miroux said. “I am excited about working with a dedicated team to expand access to comprehensive behavioral health care in the Illinois Valley.”

A key collaborating partner is the Arukah Institute, located in Princeton.

Arukah will work with St. Margaret’s to provide the community-based care and to break down barriers that people often encounter when they try and get help. In addition to counseling, Arukah brings a wellness component through complementary therapies and other approaches, which are daily activities that all people can do to stay well.

Arukah will relocate services to the new facility once renovation is completed so that any person walking in can receive wellness, counseling, crisis, psychiatry, primary care, or group/family therapies.

“We see this as a powerful way to increase care options and provide on-demand care for people in our rural area,” said Dr. Sarah B. Scruggs, CEO of the Arukah Institute and lead evaluator for the facility. “We value our partnerships with, for example, OSF and other medical/behavioral health providers in the area, and the goal here is not to serve individuals exclusively at the center. Rather, it’s to be a safe landing spot for people that are struggling, and then to find out what’s best for the person and get them there.

People deserve choice in how they

want to pursue their care. Plus it’s what works.”

Both Arukah and St. Margaret’s see that only half of the important work will occur in any physical place. The other half will occur out in the community when and where people are in need.

The new facility is providing on-demand, mobile services 24/7 to help individuals in mental health or substance abuse crisis in their homes, schools, places of work or other public spaces.

A critical partner for this work is local law enforcement, as the responsibility of around-the-clock care is usually shouldered by officers alone.

This grant will allow social workers and counselors to work alongside law enforcement officers in order to provide proper and timely help to those needing mental healthcare and/or substance abuse interventions. C Princeton Police Chief Tom Kammerer has been a driving force for this type of model in the area, and Princeton, Spring Valley and Peru police departments as well as the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office have been early adopters of this model. This model is key for reducing recidivism and preventing hospital readmissions.

“The provision of 24/7 crisis response will help the police and emergency rooms divert people in need of services to a more appropriate type of care,” Kammerer said. “The Living Room has been a proven method of addressing certain mental health crises, helping to deescalate potentially volatile encounters once they have been stabilized by police.

“We intend to extend this service to those battling substance abuse, too.

We believe this approach will save lives. We have already trained more than half of our officers in Crisis Intervention Training and all of our staff has some measure of mental health training. We are grateful to St. Margaret’s and Arukah for including us, and our law enforcement partners, in this groundbreaking effort.”

But mental health and substance abuse are only part of the problem.

Individuals often struggle with other non-medical health concerns, termed social determinants of health, which are responsible for 85% of a person’s overall health and include things like reliable employment, food, educa-

tion, housing, social support and family dynamic.

To meet these needs, the facility will leverage collaborations of the C5-Rural Network.

C5-Rural (Collaborative Complementary, Conventional and Community-based Care for Rural Populations), formed in 2019, brings together on a monthly basis medical providers, schools, churches, social services, industry, law enforcement and other community-based providers in order to develop integrative care strategies that bridge gaps in rural mental health and substance use prevention, treatment and recovery in new and innovative ways.

St. Margaret’s and Arukah were among the first five organizations to join, and now the network has grown to 36 members.

C5-Rural includes members from La Salle, Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties, and has been successful at bringing otherwise siloed entities together to learn how to work together.

“Inter-organizational collaborative care is difficult to do well, but it’s vital in an area like ours where resources are limited and people are underserved,” Dr. Scruggs said. “C5-Rural has shown that this is possible, but it requires good communication, trust, and creativity to develop new workflows among otherwise separate organizations.”

The grant will allow for the hiring of clinicians to support the medical providers caring for patients needing mental health and substance abuse services. Hiring is underway for licensed clinical social workers, licensed clinical professional counselors and behavioral health care coordinators.

While the primary location is going to be in Princeton, the plan is to embed counselors in some of St. Margaret’s larger primary care clinics to improve timely access to services, and to improve mental health services and assist physicians and nurse practitioners/physician assistants in attending to this patient population.

Budweiser Clydesdales are coming to the 100th anniversary of Marshall-Putnam Fair

HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam Fair is beyond excited to announce the return of the Budweiser Clydesdales at the 100th Marshall-Putnam Fair for the first time since 2004.

The Clydesdales will be appearing throughout fair week. They will arrive Wednesday, July 14, and will be on the grounds for the entire duration of the fair. The Budweiser Clydesdales will be displayed near the front entrance of the fair. All are welcome to view the Clydesdales as there is no additional fee. Weather permitting, they will daily be hitched to the wagon and parade around the fairgrounds, schedule is TBD. For updated information, visit the fair’s website at www.marshallputnam.org.

NEWS BRIEFS PRINCETON — Following up on a year that has been anything but ordinary, Gateway Services has announced its second annual online silent auction. The event kicks off on Sunday, June 13, at 6 p.m. and ends Saturday, June 19, at 9 p.m.

“With the ongoing pandemic, in-person events have limited our ability to return to ‘normal’ fundraisers over the past year so we have gotten a bit creative,” said Tracy Wright, CEO of Gateway Services. “Last year, we had already received some donated items for an in-person event that was canceled so we held a spontaneous auction on our Facebook page and ended up raising more money than we would have with an in-person silent auction as part of the other event.”

To date, around 50 items will be up for bids on Gateway’s Facebook page during the one-week silent auction. A photo and description of the item will be posted, along with a starting bid. Bidders can then increase the bid in $1 increments. The person with the high bid at the end wins and will be able to collect the item(s) beginning on June 21.

IRCCO and Collaborative Health Systems partner to expand valuebased care in Illinois PRINCETON — The Illinois Rural Community Care Organization, LLC (IRCCO), the first statewide Accountable Care Organization (ACO) to serve rural Illinois, has announced it is partnering with Collaborative Health Systems, a management services organization, to expand value-based care in Illinois.

Through the agreement, rural and critical access hospitals and providers have

agreed to enter into a joint venture partnership with IRCCO and Collaborative Health Systems to help improve quality outcomes and lower healthcare costs for Medicare beneficiaries living in Illinois rural communities. The new joint venture — called Rural Community Health Services — will be headquartered in Princeton.

IVCC will offer NuEra awards to cannabis production students

OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College Foundation will offer $1,000 NuEra Scholarships to students enrolled in cannabis production certificate courses beginning with the start of the fall semester Aug. 18.

Students enrolling in Introduction to Cannabis Production and Crop Pest Management are automatically eligible to receive the award. Students will receive $500 in fall and $500 in the spring as they continue through the certificate. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, books or required educational expenses. Headquartered in Wheaton, NuEra operates a cultivation center in Hillcrest, with medical dispensaries in Chicago, East Peoria and Urbana. Putnam County Rotary awards scholarships

GRANVILLE — Several outstanding Putnam County High School seniors were recognized by the Putnam County Rotary Club at the school’s awards assembly on May 26.

Melanie Trinidad was honored for “Student Service Above Self,” exemplifying the Rotary ideal of helping others locally and internationally, through her many extracurricular activities including her service as president of the Rotary-sponsored PCHS Interact Club during her senior year. The club’s recognition comes with a donation to Interact, and will be followed by presentation of the award at the club’s annual dinner meeting this summer.

Trinidad was also the recipient of the club’s $500 scholarship award in memory of Bill Klein, a Rotarian, businessman, former Granville police officer, and strong supporter of youth programs and education. The award recognizes ambition, drive and determination as the keys to

personal as well as vocational success. She plans to study criminal justice at Illinois Valley Community College in the fall.

Ian Woitynek received the club’s Co-Op Student of the Year Award and a $250 check, recognizing his outstanding participation in the school’s work-education program at Hy-Vee, gaining experience and insight in retail services. Hy-Vee was also recognized for their continuing support of the PCHS Co-op Program.

Jentsie Petersen received the club’s Knute Hammel Memorial Scholarship award of $500, recognizing academic, extracurricular and community service achievements, to help her pursue a degree and career in creative writing and education, also starting out at Illinois Valley Community College.

Rotary congratulates these recipients and all graduating seniors for all their accomplishments, with best wishes for successful and fulfilling futures ahead.

Perry Memorial Hospital will officially become OSF HealthCare Saint Clare Medical Center on July 1, and the Perry Memorial team is busy preparing.

“We are comparing how we do things now with how OSF operates,” said Christopher Blanford, MD, director of the family health clinic. “I don’t think patients will notice much of a difference. They will still be talking to the same people they know and trust, and will still be able to call in and ask questions.”

In addition to learning new processes, the team is also preparing for the upcoming retirements of Robert Mestan, MD and Arnold Faber, MD, both longtime family physicians. Looking back, Blanford credits them for helping him learn the ropes early in his practice.

“They have been a great resource for me,” said Blanford. “Beyond the medicine, Dr. Mestan and Dr. Faber have helped me become familiar with the specialists in the area who will provide the best care for my patients.”

Mestan’s medical career as a family practice physician dates back to 1978,

when he formed Princeton Family Physicians alongside Dr. Martin Faber. He began his practice during a time when the medical field was transforming from general practitioners with home offices to more specialized providers in clinic settings. He also witnessed major changes in technology.

“When I trained, CT scans were just starting to be done,” Mestan explained.

“It’s hard explaining to young physicians what medicine was like before you had a CT scan or an MRI because they’re ordered so frequently now and give so much information. In those days, you had to make diagnoses without them.”

Mestan cites electronic medical records as one of the biggest challenges when it comes to changing technology.

“Transitions tend to be difficult because of the time needed to transfer patient medical records into a new system. Fortunately, we don’t have to do that right now with the OSF transition,” he said.

He is also glad to see so many of the staff who have committed to staying, working together and providing the same quality of patient care.

Faber began his private practice in Henry in 1985 and served communities across Bureau County as part of Princeton Family Physicians. He merged his Henry practice into Princeton Family Physicians located at Perry in 2013.

Shortly after, the entire Princeton Family Physicians group was purchased by Perry Memorial Hospital and became the Perry Memorial Family Health Clinic.

Faber played a big part in the recruit-

ment of Dr. S. Das Pamnani, PhD, whose skill set, and depth of knowledge will be an important resource for Bureau County’s aging population.

Now, as part of the transition, Faber is helping each patient evaluate the best direction for their continued care. He is glad to be able to offer his patients different options based on their needs, including Dr. Pamnani for patients with chronic diseases, as well as several experienced nurse practitioners. Faber will work for OSF HealthCare until his retirement late this summer.

For Faber, one of the biggest changes he has seen is the growth of advanced practice providers.

“When I started, we didn’t have any physician assistants or nurse practitioners. Now, they are used in health care not only here, but widely,” he said.

Faber is relieved to see how nurse practitioners are making it easier for patients to access health care locally. In addition to Pamnani, patients have the option to establish care with four nurse practitioners: Anna Freeman, Karen Nenne, Rebekka Root and Abby Vladika.

“Our providers are welcoming and extremely skilled. Each provider has a something unique about their personality and our patients enjoy working with them,” he said.

Blanford shared the same sentiment, and added, “Just because someone isn’t seeing a physician, doesn’t mean they’re not getting the same level of care.”

Blanford is also looking forward to continuing the development of care teams, which was implemented in the Family Health Clinic last year.

“OSF has really embraced the team model. Patients will continue to have their personal provider, and overall, the whole team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and support staff will be familiar with each patient and their needs,” he said.

Blanford is glad to see both Mestan and Faber stay long enough to give time for their patients to get established with a new provider, but he also understands their decision to retire.

“I’ve had a lot more signs to retire than signs to keep going. It’s bittersweet, but I’m okay with it,” Faber shared. “I have appreciated my patients, I have enjoyed taking care of them, and I will miss them.”

Mestan added, “It was a very difficult decision to stop working. I’ve made relationships with many patients over the years. I’ve known some of them for 40 years. I’ve met many amazing people, and I just can’t say enough about the people who work here. The people, that’s what I will miss.”

Blanford will miss both, “Thank you to Dr. Mestan and Dr. Faber for their years of service and taking great care of their patients and being a resource for myself and the other providers in the clinic. They will definitely be missed, and we will do our best to carry on their legacy.”

Mestan plans to retire from Perry Memorial Hospital on June 30, with Faber following on Aug. 31. Dr. Manuel Ascano will also be retiring from the Perry Memorial Family Health Clinic on July 27. Together, they represent more than 100 years of service to the community.

Festival 56 announces summer lineup

PRINCETON — The Princeton Theatre Group is pleased to announce Festival 57’s summer 2021 season, especially after the coronavirus quarantine forced the cancellation of its 2020 season.

Festival 56 will be partnering with the Princeton Park District to present three productions on an outdoor stage that will be temporarily constructed behind the Bureau County Metro Center.

The season will run from June 17 through July 25. Though the openings are staggered, the season will be running in rep, so on a given week or weekend, theater-goers might be able to catch all three shows.

The shows will include a theatre for young audiences musical, “Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical,” which reimagines the experience of young Civil Rights pioneers Ruby Bridges and the Little Rock Nine, students who were the first to be integrated into public schools in Louisiana in 1960 and Arkansas in 1957, in the story of Lily Polkadot, the first Polkadot in an allSquare school. Once again, Festival 56 will be offering reduced-price tickets to younger audience members. “Polkadots” opens on June 25 and runs through July 21.

Shakespeare in the Park has been a staple of a Festival 56 summer, and this year will see the return of the timeless tragedy of “Romeo & Juliet.” The Capulets and the Montagues are

two warring families, but that doesn’t stop Juliet and Romeo from falling in love. Despite the financial challenges of the past year, Festival 56 is again able to offer the Shakespeare production at no cost to playgoers (though a donation hat will be passed). “Romeo & Juliet” will open on July 3 and close on July 24.

Festival 56’s third and final production this summer will be a classic musical with a score of familiar pop songs that go back to the 70s — “Godspell!” Join a troupe of 10 actor/singer/ dancer/comedians as they reimagine and bring to life the Gospel According to St. Matthew in this inventive, collaborative and hysterical musical. Youth from Festival 56’s summer theatre camp, Camp 56, will be participating in the production as well. Opening night for “Godspell” will be July 10, and it will run through July 25.

Two outdoor cabarets will be presented at the beginning and end of the season, on June 17 and July 25 respectively, and Festival 56 will continue its tradition of presenting a New Works reading of a new musical on July 24.

Motorist dies in 2-vehicle crash in Putnam County

GRANVILLE — A Tennessee man was killed in a two-vehicle accident on June 4 in Granville Township. Ryan Lunger, 37, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident after Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash at 3:50 a.m. in the intersection of Route 71 and Route 89.

A vehicle driven by Lunger, that was traveling northbound on Route 89, failed to stop at the posted intersection and struck the trailer of a semi that was traveling westbound on Route 71. The semi driver, who’s name was not released by the sheriff’s office, was not injured. The accident remains under investigation.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Illinois State Police, Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit, Standard Fire, PCEMS, Illinois Department of Transportation and Putnam County Death Investigator.

Engle Lane Theatre will hold auditions on June 12

STREATOR — In an uncertain year, Engle Lane Theatre announces a surprise addition to their slate of productions for 2021. Three performances of “Love, Loss and What I Wore” by Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron are set for Friday, Aug. 13, Saturday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug, 15. OBITUARIES

Illinois State Police District 17 said two parking citations were issued and two vehicles were towed for parking where prohibited Memorial Day weekend at Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks.

Troopers reported they made contact with 159 motorists to provide guidance and prevent parking where prohibited once parks reached capacity. Matthiessen reached capacity by 11 a.m. Saturday, then 10:30 a.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. Monday. Starved Rock reached capacity a little after noon Sunday and 12:30 p.m. Monday.

No crashes or injuries were reported along the state routes adjacent to the parks, south of the Illinois River.

Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks receive about two million visitors annually. The large volume of visitors has resulted in vehicles being parked in “no parking tow-away” zones located along Route 178 and Route 71, adjacent to the parks.

The problem is so pervasive it has become a safety issue to pedestrians and motorists. The illegal parking has also made it difficult for first responders to access the area in emergency situations.

Visitors to the parks should be aware of areas marked as “no parking tow-away” zones and are advised parking regulations in those areas will be strictly enforced.

While “no parking tow-away” zones are clearly marked, IDOT will be providing additional signage to further denote the zones. In addition to the zones, parking is prohibited upon any bridge or other elevated structure, or within 30 feet upon the approach to any stop sign, yield sign, or traffic control signal located at the

These are active highways with areas of limited visibility and heavy traffic during the weekend.

Vehicles found in violation of the zones will be immediately towed.

Citations may also be issued to the owners of vehicles who are found illegally parked. A citation for parking where prohibited is $164 and is considered a moving violation. The estimated fee for towing a vehicle from the area to an area tow yard is about $300.

“We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in heeding the “No Parking Tow-Away” zones, this past weekend,” Illinois State Police said in a press release. “Our primary goal was to ensure the safety of park visitors by preventing illegal parking from occurring through visibility and education, and that goal was achieved.”

Troopers will continue to patrol Route 178 and Route 71 throughout the summer.

Both proved costly as the No. 3-seeded Panthers lost 4-2 to No. 6 Peoria Christian in a Class 1A regional semifinal in Granville.

“We didn’t play awful, but we definitely didn’t play to our potential,” Putnam County coach Angie Heiser said. “We didn’t have that spark we’ve had the last couple games. That’s what was hurting us today.”

Putnam County didn’t have a base runner through three innings and five of its first nine batters struck out.

Panther pitcher Kara Staley held the Chargers in check the first three innings as well, allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters, including five in a row.

Peoria Christian broke through in the top of the fourth inning.

Hannah Kwon led off with a double and scored when Halleigh Kwon hit a fly ball to center field that was misplayed.

Morgan Haddock brought in a run with a groundout and Lilly Wuethrich hit an RBI single to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.

Hannah Kwon doubled again with two outs in the fifth and scored when Halleigh Kwon singled and the ball was mishandled in right field.

“That was uncharacteristic of our outfield,” Heiser said. “Usually our outfielders come up clutch. We just had a couple fluke moments where we didn’t read the ball right and it cost us.”

The Panthers managed to get a run back in the bottom of the fourth.

Gabby Doyle led off with a bunt single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jaidin Trone.

Tori Balma then ripped a double to right-center field to score Doyle.

Putnam County loaded the bases in the fifth and sixth innings but couldn’t score.

In the seventh, Linzee Fay drew a walk to start the inning and took second on a wild pitch. She moved to third on an error and scored on a groundout

by Balma.

The Panthers finished with three hits.

“Our offense has been something we’ve leaned on all year,” Heiser said.

“The last seven or eight games, our offense has been lights out, but I think this pitcher had some different kind of movement we weren’t used to seeing.

It’s just a matter of we have to figure out how to string hits together in those bases loaded situations to at least get something.”

While Heiser felt the Panthers didn’t play up to their potential Thursday, she’s excited for the group’s potential moving forward as Putnam County doesn’t lose any players to graduation from this year’s 9-9 squad.

“If you look at where we were a couple years ago comparing records, we’ve improved tremendously,”

Heiser said. “We’ve also improved in numbers and culture. We’re trying to make a cultural shift here moving forward with this young team. The really cool thing is every one of them should be back next spring. That gives me a lot of confidence as a coach. This group has a lot of potential. The fact we were able to win nine games and produce offensively in most of the games we had, that’s a true win. That sets us up for the rest of these players’ future here.”

In track, it all comes together with one performance on one day, and while the Seneca Fighting Irish haven’t held back any this season, they sure let it loose at the Tri-County Conference Meet on May 27.

The Irish girls won their ninth consecutive conference title, a string dating back to their time in the Interstate 8 Conference, by sweeping all the relays, hurdles, distances and all but one of the sprints to amass a whopping 234 points to 107 for runner-up Henry-Senachwine.

Meanwhile, the SHS boys rolled nearly as easily to their second straight TCC crown, totaling 207 points to 145 for second-place Lowpoint-Washburn.

Lowpoint’s girls were third with 94, followed by Marquette’s 38 and Putnam County’s 36. For the boys, the host Panthers were third with 51, with Mar-

quette’s 49 and Henry’s 33 good for fourth and fifth, respectively.

For the Lady Irish, Seneca’s Amber Vroman had a strong day, taking the 800 in 2:35.68 to best Audrey Jenkins (2:43.68), then later the 1,600 in 6:03.46 to clip Ashley Alsvig (6:16.64). Alsvig won the 3,200 with a 12:55.10.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn Giertz won both of the hurdles events, with her 17.98 in the 100 easily beating the 21:28 by Henry’s Daphaney Kessling (21.28) and her 51.56 in the 300 beating Irish’s Keeli Pumphrey (56.87).

In the other sprints, Faith Deering, who had earlier won the discus with a toss of 114 feet, was a somewhat odd combo winner by taking the 100 meters, posting a 14.44 to edge teammate Caitlyn O’Boyle. Also, Anna Bruno won the 200 meters in a time of 28.30, just in front of Henry’s Nakieta Kessling’s 28.79.

The Irish swept the relays, winning the 400 in 53.77, the 800 in 1:57.99, the 1,600 in 4:35.83, and the 3,200 in 11:22.86. Seneca mastered only three of the field events – Deering the discus, Bruno the long jump

Top finishes for Putnam County were two second places, both in relays, with a time of 2:05.86 in the 800 and 11:55.68 in the 3,200.

The Marquette girls’ best on the day were third-place finishes by freshman Lilly Craig in the 1,600 (6:45.90) and Maera Jimenez in the 100 hurdles (0:22.52).

In the boys meet, Chase Hauch (12.45) and Kolya Cato finished first and second in the 100 in and (12.72), respectively, while Houch (24.95) took second to 200meter champ Ryan McCauley’s 24.89.

Also in the sprints, Billy Glasscock posted a winning 2:10.97 to win the 800, while Given Siegel captured first in the 110 hurdles in 19.31 and Carson Collet the

win in the 300s with a 44.75.

The Irish also won three of the relays – the 400 in 47.83, the 800 in 1:37.54 and the 1,600 in 3:48.81 – and three field events.

McCauley posted a 5-5 in the high jump, Siegel an 18-4.3 in the long jump and Carter Thomas a 105-7 to win the discus.

Putnam County’s best were Joey Twardowski, who turned in a second place in the high jump at 5-1.5 and a third in the 3,200 in 12:32.14. Also third were the 400 relay in 58.34 and the 1,600 relay in 4:28.18.

Marquette’s Lucas Hoffman, who didn’t push himself due to a hip injury suffered last week, still managed to be a double-winner again, winning the 3,200 by 100 meters with a time of 11:09.14 and later claiming the 1,600 with a 5:06.86.

Also for the Crusaders, Donnie Zitt placed third in the 800 with a 2:22.48, as was the 3,200 relay with 10:17.27.

For fifth-place Henry, its best of the meet were the third-place finishes by Hunter Green in the 200 (27.39) and long jump (18-0.1), as well as Connor Keinith in the discus (88-0.2).

Kaddywampus Sports Grill prized for its burgers If you’re on the hunt for good burgers in the Illinois Valley, you’ve got to make a stop at Kaddywampus Sports Grill in downtown Granville, and give theirs a try.

The fresh beef burgers would be strong contenders in any local food contest. The small sports pub serves up big flavor that doesn’t disappoint.

On a recent trip through Putnam County, we decided to check it out. We were welcomed with friendly service, and seated quickly in the dining area. They made sure we all had a drink in hand within the first five minutes.

Whatever Illinois sport you support, you’ll find comfort in the memorabilia from every Chicago team. There’s even hometown sports team representation rooting on Putnam County High School.

We quickly dove into the menu, which offers burger options, wraps, chicken sandwiches, grilled cheeses, chicken stix, salads and also full dinner entrees like spaghetti with grilled chicken, chopped steak, and fried chicken (on Fridays and Saturdays only).

A cool thing at Kaddywampus is if you can’t get your party to all agree on one starter option, there’s a combo plate. Our dish came with portobello fries, Not So Boring Onion Rings, Pepe dogs (deep-fried mini hot dogs on a stick) and deep-fried green rice balls. To top it off, you get to pick two sauces. We played it safe with ranch and cheese sauce.

The starter plate was a hit at our table. I’d say the two top favorites were the Pepe dogs and the onion rings.

Both came with just the right amount of crisp.

Next up, one diner at our table ordered the Kaddywampus Burger, which comes with two steak burgers filled with American cheese. The diner at our table gave the burger two thumbs up, and did not leave hungry. The burger comes

Another diner at the table gave the Harry Caray Burger a go. This one came topped with a one-third-pound hot dog and beer cheese sauce.

While it seemed an unusual item, it was surprisingly well done. The hot dog gave it that extra salty flavor, and the cheese complemented the burger perfectly, with no fixings needed to give this burger flavor. Our third guest went with the Boring Burger.

If you’re looking for a simple, delicious burger patty, this is

the way to go. It’s a plain, juicy beef burger you decide how to fix to your liking.

We ended with a warm, gooey, cookie goodness treat.

The dessert comes with vanilla ice cream, crowned with a warm chocolate chip cookie, whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate and caramel sauces. Make sure to save

room for this one, or you just might leave with regrets.
