Ramblin’ Joe Durbin ready to get back on the road again

news@putnamcountyrecord.com It’s been said when life hands you lemons ... you should make lemonade. Bureau County resident Joe Durbin has taken that old saying to a completely new level.

Born 89 years ago with only his left hand and arm, his right arm ended just at the elbow. He would never know what it was like to have two functioning arms and hands, so he did what he knew to do — he moved forward and went through life without a complaint — making lemonade with only one hand and arm.

Durbin held a host of jobs — a truck driver, a factory worker, janitor, but most important to him, he learned at an early age how to play the guitar. His father made a prosthesis for his missing arm/ hand that would allow him to play the instrument, and ultimately, it would be his love for music and his ability to play a guitar with

But on Dec. 6, 1952, Durbin’s life changed. For most, it would have been a devastating and career-ending event.

“It was at the Westbrook Grain Co. in Sandwich,” he said of the grain mill accident that occurred that day with an auger-type machine after slipping on some wet hay. “They had said if you ever get your hand caught in there, you have to let it take it. If you try to pull it out, it will take your whole body.

Advice for grilling safely

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Now that the spring rains have given way to a warm summer sun, people will be spending more time outdoors. A popular activity during this time of year is cooking out, but whether you’re using charcoal or propane, safety should be a concern.

According to information released by State Farm Insurance, roughly $96 million in property damage is related to the approximate 8,800 grill fires happening every year. Those fires also result in more than 16,000 visits to emergency rooms.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, July is the peak month for grill fires.

The majority of grill fires are caused by malfunctioning gas grills, accounting for 82 percent of related accidents. Thousands of people also visit emergency rooms every

• Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

• The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

• Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.

• Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

• Never leave the grill unattended.

• Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

If using a charcoal grill: • Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.

• If using a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.

• Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.

• There are also electric charcoal starters, which don’t use fire.

Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.

• When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before using a metal container for disposal year after burning themselves while barbecuing.

Children are at an increased risk for injury during cookouts; 37 percent of those visiting emergency rooms for grill-related burns are under the age of 5.

“Keep kids away. If they want to help or watch what

is going on, teach them it’s hot and show them the proper technique,” Quentin Buffington, public information officer for the Granville-Hennepin Fire District advised.

He also said grill location should be a priority.

“Grill temps can reach several hundred degrees,

and it only takes a few unattended minutes to melt vinyl siding. This could lead to ignition and a home fire, so give them plenty of space on all sides, including overhead. Keep it out from under eaves, never leave it unattended and only grill outdoors,” he said.

Eighteen percent of grill fires have been related to the grill being too close to flammable materials.

Keep grills at least 10 feet away from buildings and flammable materials.

Clean the grill’s grates and grease pans to prevent flare-ups, and if a flare up does occur, never put water on a grease fire.

According to State Farm Insurance, a fuel leak or broken line is the leading cause of gas grill fires. Be sure to inspect your grill’s lines for cracking, sharp bends or brittleness. To test an area for a leak, rub heavily soaped water on the line and look for bubbling.

“Check all equipment prior to starting. Spiders and other insects have been known to build nests blocking gas orifices. If you smell gas, and haven’t had a successful burner

ignition, shut everything off, open it all up and wait five minutes. Then check for leaks or blockages.

We want you to keep your eyebrows intact this summer,” Buffington said.

If using a charcoal grill, keep bottles of lighter fluid capped and at a safe distance. Never add lighter fluid to hot coals and never use gasoline or kerosene to start the fire.

Proper ventilation is another necessity, never grill inside a home, tent or anywhere else where carbon monoxide fumes can’t escape. Fumes will, at best, make you sick and at high enough levels they could also kill someone.

If using charcoal, wait 48 hours before disposing of the coals. If grilling at a campsite, avoid starting a timber fire by only grilling at approved locations and dispose of the hot coals in the ember bins provided.

“If none are available, dig a small hole, extinguish with water and cover fully with dirt to avoid any unintended ignition. Also be mindful of Red Flag warnings prohibiting fires,” Buffington said.

Freedom House to offer free summer programs for children

Summer camp schedule released

PRINCETON — Freedom House will host two youth empowerment programs in June for children entering Grades 4-6. The first will be June 12-16, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., at Nelson Chapel, 446 Elm Place in Princeton, and the second will be June 26-30, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the YMCA, 315 W. First St. in Kewanee.

This program, for boys and girls, will help them to develop self-esteem and enable them to engage in healthy relationships as they enter their pre-teen and teen years.

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com OGLESBY — If you’re a child, some of the best parts of summer vacation are summer camps. While the biggest appeal is that they’re fun and often outdoors, many are also educational and STEM-related.

IVCC’s Continuing Education Center (CEC) has recently released its summer youth camp schedule for children aged 5-14. The camps will be held from June 12

through Aug. 10.

“We are excited to announce two offerings at the Ottawa Center this year, ‘Cookies and Canvas’ and ‘Super Solvers: Science Camp,’” CEC program coordinator Kim Koehler said.

Koehler said the IVCC youth camps attract more than 300 local youth each summer and added that having additional programs in Ottawa will help them to better serve the eastern part of their district.

The other new camps this year are the Super Solvers Science Camp, Radical Robots, Code Breakers, Number Nin-

jas, Kids in the Kitchen, Drones and Lego Comics.

Some of the returning youth camp favorites are Dino Daze, Minecraft Modders, Little Ninjas Tae Kwon Do and the Fab Lab Academy.

A week-long Ed’Venture Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from July 24-27 with students selecting a morning major they attend each day and three different afternoon minors to attend Monday through Wednesday.

The granddaddy of linear yard sales is June 16-17 It’s the “lucky” 13th year for the miles and miles of sales of the annual More on 34 bargain hunting event.

More on 34 has become an annual weekend of treasure hunting in the Illinois countryside along Route 34 for bargain hunters, antique buyers and collectors from across the United States. Thirteen years, 20 communities, more than 100 miles across five counties setting the stage for the granddaddy of all linear yard sales in Northern Illinois on Father’s Day weekend, June 16-17.

You never know what you will find along the way — yard sales, antique shows, craft shows, flea markets and farmer’s markets in communities from Galesburg to Auro-

ra. Sales can be found all across Bureau County from LaMoille to Neponset. Bargains can be found in parking lots, in city parks and in many yards all along Route 34. Sales typically run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but some open earlier or remain open later. A few sellers even begin their sales on Thursday and continue through Sunday.

Participating communities along the way are Galesburg, Wataga, Oneida, Altona, Galva, Kewanee, Neponset, Sheffield, Wyanet, Princeton, Dover, LaMoille, Mendota, Earlville, Leland, Somonauk, Sandwich, Plano, Yorkville and Aurora.

May was cool and rainy in Illinois

CHAMPAIGN — The statewide average temperature for May was 61.9 degrees, 0.8 degrees below normal, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel with the Illinois State Water Survey at the University of Illinois.

precipitation was heaviest in the central third of the state with a few drier areas around Bloomington and south of the Quad Cities. Danville reported the most rain for the month in Illinois with 10.19 inches. Henning came in second with 9.98 inches of rain.

I could feel it go through the gristle, and then I didn’t feel anything,” he remembered.

By all practical purposes, a man with no hands would never be able to make lemonade, but Durbin’s father inspired him to keep moving forward, telling his son, “You made it before with just one hand, and now, you’ll make it again.”

Another prosthetic device was constructed for his now-missing left hand, and before long, Durbin was again playing and singing music.

His left arm is fitted with a leather strap and a buckle which has a guitar pick inserted in the device. His right arm has a contraption that has a bar on the end of it that allows him to press on the strings of the neck of the guitar, while he strums with the other.

The result is a musical serenade that perfectly compliments Durbin’s country/bluegrass and spiritual twang, as he croons songs he’s written and performed thousands of times in his life.

While singing and playing — or even just talking about his career in music, the 89-year-old Durbin appears as excited as a young musician who deftly strums his first perfect chord or sings his first impeccable song. Durbin’s eyes sparkle; the corners of his mouth quickly form a smile; and he is lost in the moment, as the sweet music pours as freely as

that sweet lemonade he’s learned to make.

Throughout the years, Ramblin’ Joe Durbin has played in clubs, bars and a host of other venues throughout the Illinois Valley and beyond. He had two bands — the Illinois Valley Boys and the Country Ramblers. He’s cut records, published songs, and he’s taken his music career to places most would never imagine.

Perhaps his biggest claim to fame was when somebody sent a story about Durbin to the well-known country artist Johnny Cash. One of Cash’s representatives, Joanne Ingle, sent Durbin a letter in 1971 saying the Man in Black was interested in Durbin. The letter read: “We received a newspaper clipping this A.M. ... with your picture and your determination to play and sing despite your handicaps. John (Cash) is very interested. He said for me to write to you and ask you would you please send him a tape.

“He is not promising you anything, but he would like to hear what you sound like.

“We will be waiting to hear from you.”

In the music business, Durbin knew there were no promises. Instead of sending that tape, he got in the car and headed to Nashville, inevitably ending up at the House of Cash in Henderson, Tenn.

“He (Cash) said to me, ‘Do you know any gospel?’” Durbin said. “I told him I got two I’m workin’ on, so I played for him the two songs I’d written.”

Apparently Cash liked what he heard, and he told Durbin, “I’ll record it in Madison (another Nashville suburb). I’ll record it, and you’ll get some royalties.”

The relationship between Cash and Durbin continued. He remembers meeting and being impressed by June Carter Cash, and he will forever be grateful for Cash nominating him to be a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Durbin has a scrapbook which chronicles many of his musical accomplishments — everything from ticket stubs, to copies of royalty checks, his 45 rpm records and more. The smiling face of a younger man looks at you from the pages, not too differently than the 89-year-old fellow of today.

While Johnny Cash was a big name friend, Durbin has also played with a host of others, including Uncle Dave Mason, the Wilburn Brothers, Loretta Lynn, Billy Walker and his personal favorite, Ernest Tubb, where he appeared with Tubb on his well-known Midnight Jamboree in Nashville.

Durbin has been playing/singing music since he was 10 years old, and he’s not planning to stop any time soon. He has been undergoing some physical therapy for a recent fall he took, but in his own words, “He’s ready to go.”

More importantly for Durbin, once he’s completely back on his feet, he’ll be back on the road with his music again — playing the clubs, singing his songs — and making some of the sweetest lemonade you’ll ever taste.

Horizon House campaign gets $5,000 lead gift PERU — Bart Hartauer of Hartauer Insurance contributed the $5,000 lead gift to Horizon House’s annual Road to Independence campaign.

Matt Debo, Road to Independence campaign chairman, stated, “Hartauer Insurance’s lead gift set the pace for this year’s campaign. It is important for the donors as well as the volunteers to know that the campaign is off to a great start.”

Bart Hartauer and Hartauer Insurance have been strong supporters of Horizon House for many years. Hartauer is a former campaign volunteer, and Neal Hodges, an agent with Hartauer Insurance, is the Road to Independence campaign co-chair. In addition, Hartauer agents Kendra Stiel and Dick Martuzzo have volunteered for Horizon House for many years. The Hartauer family have also been involved with Horizon House for a long time. Katie Hartauer has been a campaign volunteer for over a decade.

“Support comes in many forms, and the Hartauers have demonstrated that by donating their time and resources to

Horizon House,” Debo added.

The Road to Independence campaign is divided into three phases. The first phase is the inner circle phase in which contributions are solicited from staff, board members, committee members and families of people served by the agency.

The second phase is the Tree of Hope campaign that is held in December and continues until early January.

The third and final phase is the Faceto-Face portion that utilizes community leaders as volunteers to request donations for this year’s annual campaign.

Debo added, “We have a great team of volunteers that donate their time and energy to Horizon House. The community has been very generous in the past, and I am confident we are going to have a successful campaign this year.”

The goal for this year’s campaign is $100,000.

GRANVILLE — Granville American Legion Post 180 will be disposing of unserviceable American flags on Tuesday, June 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Anyone having a damaged flag my bring it to the Corner Store in Granville or the American Legion Post, and it will be properly disposed of in the annual ceremony.

Throughout the month of June, students from kindergarten through college can receive a free movie or game rental at Family Video for each final “A” grade or (equivalent mark) they achieve in a core subject on their year-end report card. The company expects to give away over one million movie and game rentals this summer.

local students has now become one of Family Video’s most anticipated programs. Since its launch by company founder Charles Hoogland, the Report Card A program expands to 754 movie and game rental stores located in 19 states and Canada.

Although the scale of the rewards program has grown, its purpose remains the same — celebrate students who put in the time and effort to achieve

PUTNAM — Leonard LeRoy Wright, 89, of Putnam passed away at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday May 30, 2017, at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton.

Leonard was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Putnam to Dale and Nora (Lith) Wright.

Leonard was an active and longtime member of the Putnam Christian Church. He graduated from Senachwine High School. In his working life he was employed at the Prairie Farms Creamery in Henry and later for Oscar Meyer in Chicago for over 30 years.

He also was a pusher for the Lake Senachwine Duck Club, where he met Oscar Meyer.

He will be remembered or his love of gardening and growing apples. He would always share with friends and neighbors his apples and the cider that he made.

Surviving is one sister, Hilda Rouse of Bradford; one brotherin-law, Donald Maddex of Henry; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Sue Maddex; and one brother, Donald Wright.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Putnam Christian Church. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Terry Broady officiating. Burial will follow at the Putnam Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to his church, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the Diabetes Association or the National Association for the Deaf.

MAGNOLIA — John William Rott, 54, of Magnolia was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, Bernard and Beverly (Kloth) Rott, and two sisters, Paula and Jayne Rott, on Thursday, May 11, 2017.

John was good with his hands, a hard worker and amazing father; he will be fondly remembered by family as a wonderful brother.

He was born Dec. 18, 1962. He loved to make great holiday dinners for his children. He also loved fishing, being outdoors, raising pigeons, quail, rabbits and other farm animals. He was always willing to lend a hand to his friends.

He is survived by his daughters, Alisha Rott, and twins Brittany Rott and Haley Rott; a son, Cody Rott; his brothers, Bernie (Judy) Rott of Stoughton, Wis., Stephen (Lynn) Rott of Sheridan and Jeff (Carolyn) Rott of Naperville; his sisters, Connie (Dr. Earl) Medeiros of Naperville, Barbara (Glenn) Diehl of Palos Heights and Cynthia (Steve) Swanson of LaSalle; three nieces, Julie (David) Maier of Stoughton, Wis., Christine (Ben) Weavers of O’Fallon and Ally Rott of Sheridan; five nephews, Matthew (Jenney) Rott of Stoughton, Wis., Nick (Erin) Rott of Yorkville, Greg and Ken Rott of Naperville, and Scott Smith (Cindy Ringenberg) of Magnolia; two great-nieces and four great-nephews; six aunts and one uncle; and numerous cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Beverly in February 1983 and Bernard in February 1993; and his sisters, Jayne Rott in June 2008 and Paula Rott in September 2010.

A Mass of Christian burial for John was held Friday, May 19, at St. Mary Catholic Church at 401 South St. in Henry.

Visitation was held prior to the services, officiated by the Rev. Steven Bird. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Henry, next to his two sisters and parents. The Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley assisted the family.

Pallbearers were Stephen, Jeff, Cody and Nick Rott, Scott Smith and Jim Myres.

A passenger in the vehicle, Ingrid S. Juhl, 25, of Gurnee was charged with possession of cannabis less than 10 grams.

Transparency training: Take it, then live it Openness and transparency in government won’t happen unless board members and trustees and council members know the law, adhere to it, and demand that others do the same.

B

y now, most – if not all – of the newcomers elected in the Consolidated Election on April 4 have been sworn into office.

These newbies on elected boards and councils across the Illinois Valley have already started getting their feet wet regarding their new roles as representatives of the public on tax-supported units of government.

If they have not already done so, they should go online as soon as possible and spend time doing their online training regarding the Illinois Open Meetings Act. Yes, we know. According to state law, newcomers have 90 days to complete this task – until early August, in some cases.

But it will help them tremendously to have this know-how in their hip pockets as they become acclimated to their new responsibilities.

There’s a reason a law was implemented in 2012 to require elected board members to take the online training.

Many of them, otherwise, would have little inkling about what the Open Meetings Act requires them to do.

Having a working knowledge of the Open Meetings Act empowers board members to serve the public to the best of their abilities regarding openness and transparency.

During the training, they will learn various legal definitions, requirements for legal public meetings, including advance notices and agendas, how meetings can be properly closed, what can be properly discussed in closed sessions, requirements for minutes and verbatim recordings, how the Open Meetings Act applies to electronic gatherings, enforcement of the act, and the role of the Public Access Counselor. Trainees also learn about the Freedom of Information Act. Members of public bodies need to remember the people have a right to be informed about how public business is conducted. In other words, deliberations and actions are to be conducted openly.

For people unaccustomed to public service, those concepts might be foreign. But to ensure honest, aboveboard government, they are vital.

Members of the public may also take the training.

Remembering high cost of freedom E

very year in early June, we observe Memorial Day and remember the anniversary of the Normandy invasion of World War II, commonly called D-day. By the way, the “D” simply stands for whatever day a military assault is planned. For example; D-3 meant three days before a D-Day, while D+7 meant seven days after a D-Day. On June 6, 1944, America and her allies engaged in one of the most significant military operations of the 20th century. I have been personally touched by war and have a deep appreciation for the service and sacrifice that men and women give to protect our country. My mother’s brother, Kenny Maye, was killed in Korea, and I have his tags, casket flag and one picture of him. He was only 20 years old in 1950. Sadly, his existence is nearly unknown, and I often wonder about the life he could have had. To everyone that has sacrificed for this great nation, I sincerely thank you for your service.

I live a couple miles from a national military cemetery, and its close enough to the highway to see over 1,200 perfectly lined white marble tombstones. I am sure there are many who drive past with hardly thinking about how each of these individuals at one time or another accepted the call of duty.

And what is that call? To defend and protect our freedom — whatever the cost! Do you and I have convictions that strong? The first Amendment was not only signed

into existence with ink, but with the blood of over 1.1 million Americans who have died in U.S. wars along with even more who have suffered with physical and mental difficulties. For instance, the privilege we have to publicly communicate what is on our mind are liberties that have come at a great price, and we should not take them for granted.

As a chaplain for a veteran health care facility, I have the opportunity and honor to sit and talk with many fine men and women who have served in our nation’s military.

Some of them are now in their 80s and 90s, and I believe it’s important to record and preserve not only their amazing war stories, but to simply listen and appreciate who they are as individuals.

One of these residents is a man named Edward Hicks who willingly stepped forward when his country needed him the most. He was only 22 years old and had just married his lovely bride, Mary Lou, four months earlier. He received the call to join the front line and bravely responded to what would be known around the world as “Operation Overlord.”

Edward and his company were assigned to six miles of beach that was code-named “Omaha,” which has been recorded as one of the bloodiest first wave battles of Normandy. Only

600 men survived out of 2,600 who came ashore. He recalls when he jumped out of the amphibious vehicle, how the water was up to his neck and icy cold. With being loaded down with full gear that was now waterlogged, he said it was very difficult to keep from drowning. As bullets were splashing the water and whizzing past his head, all he knew to do was to stay as low as possible. Using floating bodies as shields, he was nearly paralyzed with fear. As he slowly crawled upon the sand, he immediately began to dig a hole where he could partially avoid the onslaught of constant machine gun fire. Somehow throughout the day and thankfully with the Germans running out of ammunition, he managed to work his way inland and on to accomplish the rest of his mission. He received several medals for bravery including a silver star and four bronze stars, but there is much more to being a hero than human fortitude and earning awards. It is recognizing the depth of spiritual love.

The love that Jesus demonstrated on the cross is the type of compassion that inspires individuals to love and protect others as much as they love themselves. John 15:13 reminds us that, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Kennedy: Putting Illinois first To the Editor, At the LaSalle County Democrat’s Jackson Day Dinner on April 30, a record shattering crowd turned out in spite of torrential rainfall and local flooding. You could sense a palpable feel of resolve and fight in the crowd.

Chris Kennedy, candidate for governor, gave an outstanding speech that touched on his determination to right our floundering ship of state and make the economy of Illinois work for all Illinoisans, from the urban areas of this state to the rural counties. Mr. Kennedy spoke of making the system work for all people, across all demographics regardless of economic status, geographic location or political persuasion.

Kennedy spoke of the forgotten and those left behind. He spoke of those who have watched their dreams slip away and opportunity for their children all but disappear.

It was a message not just grounded in reality but seasoned with resolve, determination and a practical record of making the system work for working people.

A tribute to John Rott To the Editor, Recently, John Rott died in an accident. John worked on my farms, part-time starting when he was in high school. He was a very good worker, especially with his hands.

John was an outdoors man. I knew his father and mother quite well. I have seen him in different settings with his children, who he loved. He strived to show his children a good time and wanted them to be happy.

He bought land on 26 across from the Illinois River. He build his home here with the beautiful view.

This was his paradise.

This is the John I knew.

Rauner-Madigan battle imperils state stability

s a recovering political junkie, I am captivated by the titanic 2018 campaign battle shaping up between GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner and state Democratic Party chair and House speaker Mike Madigan.

Rauner has reportedly committed two to three times more than the $50 million he has already put into to his campaign. Billionaire Ken Griffin just kicked in another $20 million to the Rauner cause as well.

On the other side, Madigan appears to be encouraging J.B. Pritzker in his gubernatorial aspirations, on the premise he will draw on his $3.4 billion net worth to self-fund a campaign to match or better Rauner’s money. This would free union and trial lawyer money for Madigan to protect large Democratic state legislative majorities.

Much of the Rauner-GOP money will be spent on the governor’s obsession with using a governmental matter (withhold-

COMMENTARY Jim Nowlan ing approval of a state budget) to bring Madigan to his knees, crying “Uncle” to support business-friendly reforms.

After three Spring legislative sessions, this hasn’t yet worked.

In a recent poll taken by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois Univer-

sity, only 26 percent approve of the job Madigan is doing. More important, 89 percent indeed had an opinion about Madigan.

This is unprecedented in Illinois politics — that Rauner has been able to make Madigan, just one among 177 legislators, a household name statewide — think Darth Vader.

Rauner’s approval rating isn’t much higher, at 36 percent.

That might be even lower, had Madigan the money to vilify the governor tit-for-tat over the past two years, but he hasn’t.

Madigan has to go, I agree.

It is not healthy for democracy to have one man in office half a century, and in the cat bird’s seat most of that time.

But without Madigan, Rauner wouldn’t have much of a chance for re-election, in my book.

Camp 56 open for registration PRINCETON — Learning Stage, the education committee of Princeton Theatre Group, is offering Camp 56, a two-week summer day camp for youth entering third grade through 2017 graduating seniors. Participants will have the opportunity to experience and take part in live performances, while immersing themselves in the many aspects of producing a show.

The camp is held in cooperation with Festival 56, which this summer marks its 14th​season of bringing outstanding professional theater to local audiences. Camp 56 is returning

for its seventh consecutive year of providing a theater-based camp for young people.

The camp will be held weekdays from June 19-30. Camp director Lisa Gadomski will engage campers in a series of funfilled activities including song, dance, makeup, costuming, trips to the Festival sets, and visits with cast and crew. The culmination of the camp experience will be an onstage appearance – as part of the chorus ensemble – in several performances of the Festival 56 production of “Seussical.”

GRANVILLE — Four outstanding Putnam County High School seniors were recognized by the Granville Rotary Club at the school’s award assembly on May 10.

Zachary Hartman received the club’s Co-Op Student of the Year Award and a $200 check, recognizing his outstanding participation in the school’s work-education program at Hy-Vee, gaining experience and insight in retail services.

Hy-Vee and Chris Schwarting as PC’s contact person overseeing the program, were also recognized for their continuing support of the PCHS Co-op Program.

Rachel Maggio was honored for “Student Service Above Self,” exemplifying the Rotary ideal of helping others locally and internationally, through her many extracurricular activities including her service as president of the Rotary-sponsored PCHS Interact Club during

her senior year. The club’s recognition comes with a donation to Interact and will be followed by presentation of the award at the club’s annual dinner meeting in July.

Megan Thompson received the club’s Knute Hammel Memorial Scholarship award of $500, recognizing academic, extra-curricular and community service achievements, to help her pursue a degree and career in nursing, starting out at Illinois Valley Community College.

Noe Flores received a $500 award presented in memory of Bill Klein, a Rotarian, businessman and strong supporter of youth programs and education, recognizing ambition, drive and determination as the keys to personal as well as vocational success. He plans to begin his studies at Illinois Valley Community College and then plans to move on to Purdue to study engineering.

The movie is a 2012 documentary which covers Fred Urquhart’s nearly 40-year-long scientific investigation into the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), tracking the details of what is considered one of

the longest known insect migrations on the planet — the flight of the Monarch butterfly from Central Mexico to the United States and Canada and back.

Ellen Starr, a pollinator advocate, will be there to talk about a little about pollinators and to answer questions at the end of the movie.

Festival 56 announces launch of its 14th season Season to open June 23 PRINCETON — Artistic Director Shannon Hill announces the launch of Festival 56’s 14th season of plays and musicals. “This year,” she says, “we explore the idea of equality through stories that celebrate differences.”

The Festival’s summer season opens on Friday, June 23, with “Disenchanted!” by Dennis T. Giacino. The show runs through July 1 and features Snow White and her posse of disenchanted princesses who have come back to life to set the record straight.

tion is “The Comedy of Errors.”

Syracuse and Ephesus are twin brothers, separated for years after surviving a shipwreck.

Together with their twin servants, both named Dromio, the brothers descend upon the same town in search of their missing family. Two sets of twins, mistaken identities, long-lost family members, and pregnant wives: What could go wrong?

“Seussical” by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty opens on July 7 and runs through July 15. Based on the books by Dr. Seuss, this family-friendly musical brings everyone’s favorite Seuss characters together to tell the story of Horton the Elephant as he tries to save the tiny world of Whoville. Featuring The Grinch, The Cat in the Hat, and Gertrude McFuzz, “Seussical” will warm audience-goers’ hearts with its rollicking music and lovable characters.

Alan Ball’s “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress” runs from

July 18-23. This play, which takes place during an unfortunate wedding, tells the story of five bridesmaids who form a common bond over more than just their hideous dresses. Raise a glass to Frances, Mindy, Georgeanne, Meredith and Trisha in this wickedly funny and touching celebration of women’s spirit.

“Stop Kiss,” which runs July 21-29, tells the story of Callie and Sara, who meet and unexpectedly fall in love. Their first kiss leads to a violent attack that changes their lives forever. In this poignant and enchanting story, playwright Diana Son explores the meaning of love and how life can change in an instant.

The summer’s final production is “Sweet Charity” by Neil Simon, with music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields. Running July 28-Aug. 6, this production follows the adventures of taxi dancer Charity Hope Valentine, who wants nothing more than to fall in

love. She dates all types of men, hoping to find “the one.” Along the way, she sings, dances, and laughs with her friends in this sharp, witty and entertaining musical. With songs like “Big Spender” and “The Rhythm of Life,” “Sweet Charity” has become a much-loved classic.

Festival 56’s summer season also includes four cabarets and the second annual New Works Festival, featuring staged readings of short plays submitted by playwrights from around the world.

PCES third-graders take field trip

On May 11, the third-graders from Putnam County Elementary School went on a field trip to Peoria. They visited the Peoria Riverfront Museum, where they watched a 3D film on the giant screen theater and also saw a show in the planetarium. They also visited the Caterpillar Visitors Center, where they were able to explore machines and use simulators to “operate” the equipment.
