Henry woman dies after rollover Vehicle overturns into water-filled ditch on Route 18 Shaw Media A Henry woman died after a May 30 rollover crash on Route 18 east of Magnolia that required a water rescue.

Autumn D. Unruh, 18, was a passenger in a 2006 Ford Focus driven by Issac Tijerina, 19, of Marseilles. He was traveling on Route 18, approaching North First Road

at about 11:40 p.m. when he said a deer entered the roadway, forcing him to swerve to avoid striking it. The vehicle exited the roadway, overturning into a ditch filled with water.

Unruh could not remove herself from the vehicle, and was extricated by fire personnel. Unruh was transported from the scene via helicopter, and later died.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene to find the vehicle upside in the creek on the north side of Route 18, according to the Lostant Fire Department. The driver was able to exit the vehicle, but the passenger was trapped inside.

Firefighters, a LaSalle County deputy, and an Illinois State trooper entered the water and freed the passenger, who was then transported

by LifeFlight helicopter to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

The driver was taken to Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru.

Putnam County EMS, LaSalle County Sheriff and Illinois State Police were on scene. Putnam County Sheriff and Marshall County Sheriff assisted with traffic control.

This crash is pending further investigation by Illinois State Police District 17 and the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.

news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENRY — The Illinois Department of Agriculture has announced its plans to control the spread of the invasive gypsy moth in various areas of the state, including Putnam County.

Consisting of two phases of treatments spread over seven counties and more than 81,000 acres, the first applications were scheduled to begin last week.

Phase one covers areas of Kendall, LaSalle, Will and Ogle counties. Low-flying helicopters applied BtK (Bacillus thuringiensis var.

Kurstaki) during early morning flights over more than 11,000 acres.

A second application of BtK will be applied during the following two weeks.

BtK is a natural bacteria often used by gardeners as an environmentally-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. It has an excellent safety record and isn’t harmful to mammals or vertebrates, the state Ag Department reports.

The second phase of control is scheduled for late June and will include areas of Putnam, LaSalle, Stark, Jo Daviess, Ogle and Peoria counties. The more than 70,000 acres of this phase will receive aerial treatments of Splat GM-Organic, a pheromone that confuses male gypsy moths and prevents them from breeding.

More than 17,000 acres in Putnam County will be treated.

“I’ve spoken with two Putnam County farmers, and they haven’t seen any sign of gypsy moths yet,” Tiffany Moodie of the Marshall-Putnam County Farm Bureau said.

Gypsy moths are indigenous to Europe and were introduced to the East Coast of North America in 1869 during a failed attempt to develop a silk worm industry.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the range of the

moths spreads about 13 miles a year, if no intervention occurs.

More than 250 species of trees and shrubs can be damaged by the gypsy moth, but their preferred food source are oak leaves.

Their larvae are carried through the air, and the species can strip plants bare and leave them susceptible to disease and attacks from other destructive insects.

Birds being accepted for West Nile Virus testing Collecting and testing dead birds is an important component of the West Nile Virus surveillance program, according to a news release from the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments.

West Nile virus generally appears in birds and mosquitoes before it is transmitted to humans, according to the release.

Therefore, monitoring bird populations helps to predict when and where humans will be at higher risk for West Nile Virus infections.

The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments are now accepting dead birds for testing of West Nile Virus. The public is encouraged to help locate birds that may have died from the disease.

Sick birds or birds that have been dead less than 12 hours may be eligible for testing. To qualify for testing, birds must meet these guidelines: • Birds must be dead less than 12 hours (fresh), and the carcass must not have obvious signs of trauma (struck by a vehicle, window or animal attack), decay or strong odor. Birds dying from WNV are usually found singly, scattered over a wide area. In contrast, birds that die from other causes (storm mortality, food poisoning, toxicants) often die in groups or clusters.

• Only adults should handle dead

birds. Pick the bird up with gloves, tongs or a shovel. If you do not have gloves, insert your hand into a plastic bag like it is a glove, grasp the bird carefully and invert the bag over the bird. Each bird should be double-bagged in clear plastic bags.

The health departments urge the public to take precautions to protect you and your family from mosquito bites. Outbreaks of WNV occur each summer in the United States, and warmer temperatures mean more mosquitoes. These common-sense precautions may help to minimize mosquito bites this summer: • Avoid being outdoors at night and early morning, when mosquitoes are active.

• When outdoors during these times, wear light-colored clothing and apply insect repellent.

• Ensure that doors and windows have tight, properly fitting screens.

• Eliminate all sources of standing water that support mosquito breeding (i.e., bird baths, wading pools, and flowerpots, tires, cans, buckets, clogged gutters, abandoned swimming pools, etc.) on your property. This is especially important because large numbers of mosquitoes that carry WNV can emerge from even one shallow container of stagnant water.

Lippincott named Citizen of the Year HENNEPIN — Hennepin’s 2018 Larry Wilt Citizen of the Year Award has been presented to Fred Lippincott.

Kevin Coleman made a surprise presentation of the award on May 24 as Lippincott dined at Spratt’s Tap with his wife, Fern; Norm and Jan Raffety (who nominated Lippincott); and Hennepin Village board member Quentin Buffington.

A large number of people followed Coleman and congratulated Lippincott on the award and thanked him on behalf of the community for his many years of service and dedication to the Village of Hennepin.

Buffington said the Lippincotts were surprised and overjoyed and thanked everyone for this special recognition.

Putnam County EMS chief Andrew Jackson receives prestigious national award

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com MCNABB — For the past 45 years, Andrew Jackson has been an integral part of ensuring that residents of Putnam County have had the help they need during times of emergencies.

This year, he’s received recognition for his dedication.

Jackson, who is director and EMS chief of the Putnam County Emergency Medical Service, was recently named a 2018 recipient of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians EMS Advocate of the Year Awards.

“When I was told I was going to receive this award, I was speechless. I’m very honored and humbled to have been given this great honor, especially because I’m involved with the great staff at PCEMS, a very small department, and also because we take care of all the great people in Putnam County and the surrounding areas.”

Andy Jackson is a familiar face at community events. He regularly hosts a booth at the annual Putnam County High School College and Career Fair during which he shares the requirements, challenges and benefits of a career in the emergency medical service field with interested students.

He began his service as a firefighter in 1973 and began his work providing emergency medical care in 1991. He’s been a part of the local EMS since it was formed in 2006, and has been its director and chief since 2008.

“I enjoy everything about this work,” Jackson said.

“This is my heart and soul, knowing that myself and my great staff at PCEMS are making a great difference.”

Thousands of EMS providers are nominated for the awards each year, but only two or three are chosen to receive the honor during the national EMS association’s On The Hill Day event held yearly in Washington, D.C. The criteria for the awards is based on the nominee’s efforts to keep the public informed, as well as speaking to local, state and federal government leaders about the status of EMS providers, desired changes and organizational needs.

Jackson said EMS work has undergone many positive changes over the years in regard to both equipment and procedures. He is hopeful providers will also soon be recognized as organized professionals such as registered nurses and firefighters.

“We’re making great strides with the public starting to understand that as EMS providers, we’re bringing the emergency room to them and aren’t just ambulance drivers any more,” he said.

EMS providers must dedicate themselves to complete demanding emergency medical training and then continue it, and Jackson said one of the challenges EMS providers regularly face is the pay. He added another challenge is educating the public about when to call for an ambulance.

“My prediction for the future of EMS is that, hopefully, all of the great, well-trained and dedicated people involved finally get the rewards and recognition they deserve,” Jackson said.

Jackson’s EMS Advocate of the Year Award citation states he “advocates consistently to ensure that every patient receives the best pre-hospital care. He is an ambassador for the EMS profession and takes it upon himself to meet with local and state officials to educate them on the important

“Our chief lives and breathes for all of us in this great EMS field,” Putnam County EMS member Kathy Newhalfen stated in the write-up.

“We, the staff and the Putnam County residents, feel that Chief Andrew Jackson is an outstanding person and really deserves some recognition for his hard work on behalf of our profession,” Putnam County EMS member Jermey Simmons wrote.

Jackson’s award and career accomplishments are even more impressive when compared to the

other two award winners for 2018.

While he’s the director of a small EMS service in the smallest county in the state, the others are state-level EMS advocates and coordinators for Delaware and Wisconsin.

“When I was told I was going to receive this award, I was speechless. I’m very honored and humbled to have been given this great honor, especially because I’m involved with the great staff at PCEMS, a very small department, and also because we take care of all the great people in Putnam County and the surrounding areas,” Jackson said.

Health Fair confirms that help is available

To help local residents stay informed about the wide variety of health care and assistive products and services there are, the Putnam County Community Center (PCCC) held its Health Fair on May 31.

“An event like this is important because it’s helpful to be aware of all of the benefits and services available and people often overlook many of them,” PCCC Director Michelle Halm said.

The fair hosted booths that included product demonstrations and informative help from representatives of the U of I Extension; Social Security; Axline Pharmacy; a variety of medical alert services; St. Margaret’s; the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging; PCCC Outreach; the Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living; the Caring Friends Alzheimer’s Support

Susan Glassman, a nutrition and wellness educator with the U of I Extension, said dietary questions were a common topic of the day, and she was happy to share a variety of ways to eat healthier while still enjoying varied and flavorful meals.

“It’s a good way to get new information and see all of the different things and learn what’s available,” Granville’s Mary Bence said of the health fair.

Amy Phillips, of the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging, said she was mostly asked questions about Medicare.

“We do a lot of SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program) counseling, and it’s very common for people to have several questions, so we’re happy to be here to share information and help our Putnam County residents,” she said.

While all the booths shared information and provided valuable assistance, the table that seemed to be attracting the most attention was the IATP table, which was full of cleverly designed assistive products.

Elmer will be missed most for his kind and positive nature. He made everyone around him feel welcome and appreciated.

Surviving are his two sons, Ken (Susan) of Magnolia and Gary (Jane) of Putnam; his grandchildren, Kevin (Sarah) of Magnolia, David of Henry and Katie of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his great-grandchildren, Madison and Molly of Magnolia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 2012; a brother, Arch; and two sisters, Lucille Knapp and Wilma Woerner.

Visitation was held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at the First Presbyterian Church of Henry. Funeral services followed at noon with the Rev. James Friedmeyer officiating. Burial followed in the Henry Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the church, Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau Foundation, Marshall-Putnam 4-H Foundation, Illinois CancerCare Foundation or the donor’s choice.

The Calvert & Johnson Memorial Home in Henry is in charge of arrangements.

HENNEPIN — Melvin “Bud” R. Barker, 85, formerly of Henry, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018, at Cabin Livin in Hennepin.

Bud was born July 26, 1932 in Henry to Melvin Henry and Lucille (Landers) Barker.

He graduated from Henry High School in 1950. He was employed for 42 years at Illinois Power Company, Hennepin facility, and retired as plant supervisor.

Bud served in the U.S. Navy.

Bud was a member of American Legion Post 233 in Henry. He was a past member at Edgewood Golf Course in McNabb. He was also past member and president of the Henry School Board.

Survivors include five daughters, Julie (Frank) Bizzell of Clermont, Fla., Joan (Chris) Wyatt of St. Augustine, Fla., Jill (Dave) Bogner of Elkhart, Ind., Joy Barker of St. Charles and Jolene (Gary) Woitynek of Granville; one sister, Marilyn Schuster of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Kathleen (Scott) Aslan, Jackson and Joseph Wyatt, Michael (Denise) Horn, Benjamin and Bradley Shurts, Britny and Zachary Mekley, and Ian Woitynek; and four great-grandchildren, Emerson, Broden and Langston Aslan, and Mckaela Horn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lois Jean, in 1996.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating.

Per Bud’s request, his body was donated to science.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cabin Livin in care of Jolene Woitynek at P.O. Box 375, Granville, IL 61326.

PUTNAM — Reba L. Read, 91, of Putnam passed away at 12:20 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2018, at Heartland Health Care Center in Henry.

She was born July 7, 1926, in Deer Run, W.Va., to Fred and Myra (Lough) Eye. She married Edgar K. Read on April 4, 1948, in Marseilles. They were happily married for 65 years. He preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 2013.

She was a homemaker, and she and Edgar farmed west of Putnam. They spent their winters in Ft. Myers Beach, Fla. She was a devoted member of the Putnam Christian Church, where she worshiped her entire life. Reba and Edgar traveled extensively in their Airstream with the Wally Byam Club.

Surviving are her four sons, David (Laura) Read of Memphis, Tenn., Paul (Sue) Read of Putnam, Alan (Pat) Read of Tiskilwa and Harold (Tara) Read of Putnam; two daughters, Susan (Bill) Doyle of Henry and Carol (Will) Duke of Putnam; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Geneva Looft of Avon Park, Fla. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the Putnam Christian Church. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Terry Broady officiating.

Burial will follow at the Putnam Cemetery.

Driving while revoked At 9:21 a.m. on May 27, Charles O. Hughes, 50, of Terre Haute, Ind., was charged with speeding in a construction zone and driving while revoked following a traffic stop on Route 89 in Granville Township. Hughes was also wanted out of Clark and Champaign counties.

Hughes posted bond and was released with a Putnam County court date.

HENRY — Elmer F. Knapp, 104, died peacefully Sunday, May 27, 2018, at Heartland Health Care Center in Henry.

Elmer was born March 3, 1914, to Henry A. Knapp Jr. and Rosa (Smithgall) Knapp in Deer Creek. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Holmes Aug. 15, 1942, in Alta and they moved to Magnolia in 1945. She preceded him in death on July 2, 2012.

A lifelong farmer, Elmer raised beef cattle, hogs and row crops. He was known for his innovative and progressive farming practices and strong business acumen, such as: switching from horses to tractors earlier than others, traveling cross-country to purchase specific feeder calves, and building the area’s first grain bins. He and his wife also worked at Caterpillar in East Peoria during World War II. Elmer was the proud patriarch of his family and a pillar of the community. Through his quiet and thoughtful manner, he instilled strong values in those around him.

He was president of the Magnolia-Swaney Grade School board, master of the Magnolia Grange, elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Henry, and was an active member of the Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau, as well as other committees and organizations.

Six stolen dirt bikes recovered in Magnolia Putnam County authorities request public’s help

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance regarding the possibility of additional stolen motorcycles in the area after six were stolen in rural Magnolia.

On May 29, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office recovered two stolen motorcycles Kevin Doyle from a building in Henry, and Marshall Putnam County authorities’ County sheriff investigation determined the motorcycles had been taken from a building in rural Magnolia.

Reports have been turned over to the Putnam County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the accused face charges of burglary, theft and possession of stolen property. The six motorcycles have an approximate combined value of $20,000, and they are currently being kept by Putnam County authorities as evidence.

The department is asking the public for assistance in helping to determine whether there are additional stolen motorcycles in the area.

Launched at Putnam County, Marquis Energy’s program expanding to DePue

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Thanks to the generosity and sense of community spirit at Marquis Energy, Putnam County High School has had a valuable incentive and mentoring program that has encouraged both the students and staff for the past three semesters — the Panther Progress Program, or P³ (P-cubed).

Marquis Energy officials met with Superintendent Carl Carlson in 2016 and shared a desire to define an academic goal-setting program where students work with assigned mentors to submit an application detailing two goals they would like to work on throughout the semester.

“It’s helped put a focus and emphasis on the individual student because it’s unfortunately all too easy to think of the collective, and the mentoring involved has allowed for the formation of meaningful relationships between our staff and students which, in some cases, has continued beyond the student’s time here at PCHS,” Principal Clayton Theisinger said.

According to Theisinger, the goals “must be rigorous and based on previous academic and behavioral data.” Accepted students then continue to work with their mentors on a weekly basis throughout the semester in order to accomplish their chosen goals.

Mentors can provide important and motivational assistance to the students because each works with only one or two students.

The fall 2016 semester served as the pilot and was offered only to seniors. It’s now being offered to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in the hope that early development of mentoring relationships will provide four years of academic achievement.

“Research shows a positive and focused relationship with a teacher directly correlates with academic and behavioral success, and the program essentially provides explicit opportunity for this relationship to develop,” Theisinger previously said.

Students initially received $300 if their goals and time commitments were met. During the pilot semester, 21 students participated, and almost 50 percent achieved both of their goals and met the time requirements with their mentors.

However, Theisinger added those students not meeting their goals still came extremely close and showed tremendous gains.

The program has now been changed so that students who meet some, but not all, of their goals can still receive an encouraging incentive to continue their efforts.

“Students who attend all of their mentor meetings will receive $100; students who meet one of their goals and attend all meetings will receive $300; and those meeting both goals and attending all meetings will receive $600,” Marquis Energy’s Dennis Thompson said at a celebratory luncheon held at PCHS on May 22.

PCHS freshman Katelynn Missel, of Lostant, said it was learning how to define and set goals that was the most beneficial aspect of joining the program, a thought shared by all the students spoken to that day and confirmed by Theisinger.

“You have to be very in-depth with your goals, and it’s been hard to maintain everything,” he said.

Another student said the most important aspect of the program to her has been “having someone to talk to.”

There are approximately 20 students in the program, and although not all succeed in meeting the requirements to receive the financial incentives, there are still benefits to be had.

“It’s a rigorous program, and not everyone succeeds, but there are still valuable lessons in that,” Theisinger said.

Because of the success of the PCHS program, Marquis Energy has begun offering it to other schools, although with a different name. According to Thompson, the program will now be called M³ (M-cubed), in reference to the three educators within the Marquis family.

He said the details of the program have been presented to the high schools in DePue and Henry.

“The DePue School Board has already approved and signed off on it, and we’re proud to be able to offer it to them,” Thompson said.

BLOOMINGTON — The Ottawa Marquette Crusaders baseball team fell behind and had a tough time getting things to click into place May 26 in the championship game of the Illinois Wesleyan Class 1A Sectional at Jack Horenberger Field.

Senior Michael Killelea delivered the go-ahead, two-run single in the bottom of the third inning and freshman winning pitcher Shane Reynolds working four shutout innings of relief in Marquette’s 8-2, title-winning victory over rival Putnam County.

Putnam County (22-9-1) saw its season come to an end after leading 2-0 through a half inning and 2-1 until the Cru took control in the third.

Nolan Whitney, Luke Olson and Jakob Pyszka had the Panthers’ three hits. Dzierzynski and Brayden Holmes scored the two runs.

“You’ve got to give Putnam credit,” said Hopkins. “They jumped down our throat to start, went up 2-0, executed, but then we were able to get the lead. I thought the hit by Killelea got us going ... and I don’t know what else to say about Shane Reynolds.

“For a freshman ... he was phenomenal. He’s played a lot of baseball, and a lot of credit goes to (assistant coaches Brad) Waldron and (Brian) Bressner, because they work with the pitchers, but (Reynolds) has an air about him, and not in a bad way.

When he takes the mound, he knows he can play.”

The right-handed Reynolds came on with one on and nobody out in the top of the fourth, relieving Crusaders ace Bryce Foster. Foster struggled with his control and his pitch count but worked his way out of jam after jam, allowing only two unearned runs in the first.

When Reynolds entered he did so with a lead.

GRANVILLE — The Panthers Volleyball Camp will be held June 18-21 at Putnam County High School.

The camp for incoming thirdthrough fifth-grade students runs from noon to 2 p.m. while the camp for sixth- through eighth-grade students runs from 2 to 4 p.m.

Cost is $40 which includes a T-shirt.

The primary emphasis of the camp will be on the basic volleyball fundamentals of passing, serving, setting, hitting, defense and serve receive, said coach Amy Bell.

Many different games and drills will

be held throughout the week to teach individual and group fundamentals.

Putnam County volleyball coaches and current high school players will run the camp.

St. Margaret’s receives Walter Durley Boyle Grant for work in Putnam County SPRING VALLEY — St. Margaret’s Hospital received a grant provided by the Walter Durley Boyle Trust to improve the heart and stroke related care to the residents of Putnam County.

This is taking place in numerous way, including community education program (Healthy Heart, Healthy Cooking, after school healthy kids programs, Healthy Kids Summer Camp), CPR training for the students and faculty of the Putnam County School District and public CPR training as well, just to name few.

St. Margaret’s has provided a total

of eight additional AEDs to the county, three for the school district and five for the baseball/softball program, so that every diamond utilized for games has an AED on premises.

Included with this, CPR and first aid training for any school staff and coaches throughout the county as well as implementing a CPR program for the students of the county will be provided. In addition, St. Margaret’s has been able to purchase some additional equipment for the hospital and education opportunities for the staff that will assist in improving the care we give to patients with stroke and heart related issues.

COMMUNITY BRIEF Fly-in/drive-in breakfast on June 17 LACON — A Father’s Day fly-in/drive-in breakfast will be held from 7 to 11:30 a.m.

Sunday, June 17, at the Marshall County Airport, located one-half mile east of Lacon.

The menu will be pancakes, eggs and sausage, and the donation asked is $6 for adults, $4 for children, with ages under 6 free. Pilots in command also eat free. Participants should also bring their own tie-downs. The event will also include airplane and helicopter rides, and static airplane displays. The public is invited.

The Putnam County Library District has announced its upcoming programs.

Library science will be at 5 p.m.

Wednesday, June 6, in McNabb.

Participants will explore scientific experiments at the library and create a craft that fits the subject matter. This month is Fizzology.

“Three Illinois Women During the Civil War,” an Illinois Humanities Council Road Scholar Program, will be presented at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 7, in Hennepin. Historical Actor Betty Kay will begin this historical presentation as Jenny Hodgers of Belvidere, also known as Albert Cashier, a woman who passed as a man and fought in the Civil War. She will then portray Mother Bickerdyke of Galesburg, who established 300 field hospitals during the war and assisted wounded soldiers on 19 battlefields. She will then conclude as Julia Dent Grant, wife of the Commanding General of the Union Army.

Books and Brunch will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9, in McNabb. This will be a morning gathering to enjoy coffee and a light breakfast with fellow readers.

“Build a bird house” will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, in Magnolia.

“Bees!” will present at 10:30 a.m.

GRANVILLE — The 2018-19 FFA officer team was installed at the group’s annual FFA banquet on May 5. The officers are Nolan Whitney, president; Michael Schrowang, Emily Bruch and Molly Boyd, vice presidents; Michael Dzierzynski and Hope Keller, treasurers; Kennedi Bazydlo and Megan Wiesbrock, secretaries; Cassie Johnson and Olivia Brown, reporters; Carter Trone and Jacob Wiesbrock, sentinels; Clayton Newsome, historian; Nick Mattern, parliamentarian; and Kole Chiado, chaplain.

Some upcoming events for officers are officer retreat June 4-6, where they practice team bonding and leadership. They will also plan for the upcoming year to improve the Putnam County FFA Chapter.

State ag mechanics results announced GRANVILLE — Putnam County High School FFA members Michael Schrowang and Aaron Cimei both participated in state ag mechanics contest on May 15.

Cimei took eighth place in welding out of 28 students. He took an exam, had to T weld, and also Butt weld, using a 6011 and 7018. He also used

GMAW and an oxy-acetylene torch in his part of the contests.

In ag power, Schrowang got fourth place out of 29 people. He had to perform a safety inspection and troubleshoot an engine. He also had to identify parts of an engine, measure engine parts using micrometers, telescoping gauges and dial calipers.

GRANVILLE — The Putnam County Panteras will host a dance clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 30, in the Putnam County High School commons. Participants will learn different tricks, a routine and a kickline to perform in front of the Hennepin Courthouse on the Fourth of July.

The cost of the camp is $30, which includes a T-shirt, lunch and goodie bag. Lunch will be a hot dog, chips, juice and fruit snacks. If a child does not like hot dogs, or can’t eat them, parents should provide a sack lunch.

Prairie Arts Center announces ‘Barefoot in the Park’ tryouts PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Center (PAC) in Princeton has announced tryouts for writer Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park.” Tryouts will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 10, in the PAC theater 24 Park Ave. East in Princeton.

Director Larry Kelsey will be looking for a male and female in their 20s and 30s for the lead roles. There will be three males and one female in their 40s and up supporting roles.

“Barefoot in the Park” focuses on newlyweds Corie and Paul Bratter and their adventures living in a minuscule sixth floor walk-up apartment in a Greenwich Village brownstone in 1963. Stuffed-shirt

Paul is a hard-working young attorney just starting his practice, while spontaneous bride Corie is determined to create a romantic environment in one room with no heat, a hole in the skylight and oddball neighbors.

The play will be performed during Princeton’s annual Homestead Festival. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m.

LaSalle Public Library announces upcoming programs Lego Mania!

‘Prairie Quilts’ program

LASALLE — The LaSalle Public Library will host Lego Mania! for the summer. Open to all ages, this program is for those who love to build, design and create.

Lego Mania! will be held Thursdays, June 7, 14, 21 and 28, and July 5, 19 and 26, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Participants are welcome to choose among thousands of Lego pieces to start building. Staff will have Lego books and magazines available to get ideas. Youth are welcome to snap a photo before disassembling their construction.

Legos are for in-library use only. Parents should be aware that many Lego pieces are very small and may pose a choking hazard to young children. Children under 8 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

LASALLE — The LaSalle Public Library will host Cathy Crafton, quilter and needlepoint artist, at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, June 12. Her program will be “Prairie Quilts.”

In this unique program, Grafton will explore the history of early Illinois settlers, and how the land of Illinois — prairie, woodland and farmland — have inspired and influenced her in the making of quilts. She will bring a selection of her quilts for viewing. This program is made possible through funding by the Alwin C. Carus Trust.

Don’t bet that gambling can save Illinois Sports betting could become latest way to gamble here

S

tate governments are salivating now that the U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for them to authorize sports gambling, a legal (Nevada only right now) and illegal industry that experts say dwarfs the lotteries and casinos in dollars wagered.

But don’t count on any future state tax revenues from sports betting to make a dent in our state’s huge budget deficit.

Illinois has seven forms of legal gambling, in order of tax revenue to the state: the lottery, video gambling, casinos, horse racing, bingo, pull-tab and jar games.

State revenue from gambling has jumped from $118 million in 1975, when the state-run lottery was created, to $1.3 billion ($567 million in inflation-adjusted dollars) this past year.

The $2.8 billion spent on Illinois lottery tickets this past year amounts to about $600 for each of our state’s five million households.

The Illinois Lottery returns only

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan 60 cents in winnings for every $1 spent on tickets, making it a really bad bet, yet a terrific profit maker for Illinois state government.

And, yes, Mildred, the state’s $730 million in lottery revenue this past year does go directly into the Common School Fund, as was ballyhooed when the lottery was sold to citizens.

The problem is that budget-makers have taken a similar amount that would otherwise have gone to public schools from other sources and spent it elsewhere. So, little or no net gain for education.

Gambling at video terminals in bars and betting parlors was authorized just 5 years ago and has already surpassed riverboat casinos in annual revenue to the state, at almost $300 million.

A friend in Galesburg (population 32,000) in western Illinois told me that this past year, people in his town wagered $86 million at 139 video gambling terminals, and lost $7.2 million, or $225 for every per-

son in his town.

Should Illinois jump on board with even more gambling?

I think the costs of gambling are greater than the benefits. But as a non-gambler, my assessment is highly subjective.

Various sources I turned to on the Internet say that about 3 percent of all gamblers are either compulsive or problem gamblers, who create big social problems.

Two decades ago, a friend of mine committed suicide, apparently over gambling debts he couldn’t pay.

And while middle- and upper-income folks spend more on gambling, the poor spend a higher percentage of their income on gambling, much of it taken from basic family needs. All this has to cause great anguish and worse within families.

On the plus side, my tennis partners have some bucks to squander weekly on the lottery, and they enjoy fantasizing about what they will do with their millions when they win the Power Ball or whatever. And on my one visit to an Illinois casino, I saw lots of seniors who seemed to find sitting at the slots preferable to another day of boredom back home.

To the editor: It was disappointing to read of Hennepin’s plans for managing its population of unowned, free-roaming cats [“Hennepin decides feral felines have worn out their welcome,” May 22].

Feeding bans have proved ineffective virtually anyplace they’ve been attempted. As with other instances of criminalizing kindness, such measures are misguided and extraordinarily difficult to enforce.

Removal, too, has a very poor track record of effectiveness. Indeed, this approach to managing free-roaming cats (i.e., impoundment followed, in most cases, by lethal injection) has been used for more than 100 years in this country with no evidence whatsoever that it’s produced any long-term population reduction. It’s also wildly unpopular and costly, the poster child for failed

I am guessing legal sports gambling may be of the magnitude of the lottery, which might mean $200 million to $300 million more into our state coffers each year. Of course, it will hurt the other forms of gambling, just as the lottery and then casinos basically killed horse racing in Illinois.

The state’s total take of $1.3 billion from gambling this past year represents less than 2 percent of the $70 billion-plus in annual state revenue, or the equivalent in yield of about one-third of a percentage point in the rate of the 4.95 percent individual income tax.

Ultimately, I predict Illinois will authorize sports gambling. Its yield to the state will, however, never come close to filling our multibillion-dollar budget hole. Yet it will add to the social problems generated by gambling addiction, and the spending of grocery money by many poor folks who can’t resist the lure of fool’s gold.

Targeted trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) programs, by contrast, offer a common-sense, animal-friendly alternative for reducing the number of community cats in our neighborhoods. The process is simple: cats are caught (often by volunteers), evaluated by veterinarians, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and returned to their original outdoor homes, no longer able to have kittens.

By preventing additional births instead of trying to house, feed, and euthanize more cats, TNVR also saves taxpayers money. No wonder such programs are becoming increasingly popular across Illinois (and the country), in communities large and small, urban and rural.

Attendance at Starved Rock down during holiday weekend BRENT BADER Shaw Media UTICA — Starved Rock State Park saw a slight decrease in attendance this year during the Memorial Day holiday weekend compared to previous years.

Site superintendent Kerry Novak believes the extreme heat may have played a factor.

“I think Monday the heat kind of discouraged people,” Novak said.

“The other thing we noticed is normally people come here for two

hours. I think they cut that in half on Monday.”

The park saw an estimated 90,362 visitors during the three-day holiday weekend, which is less than last year’s total of 93,374 and the 2016 total of 94,452.

The estimation comes as a result of detecting the number of vehicles entering the park at the west entrance and lodge. Each vehicle is counted as 5.5 people.

The decrease continues an overall attendance drop this year that Novak attributes to the late arriv-

al of pleasant weather. The area’s weather remained cooler and rainy when compared to 2017.

“The staff has had a nice little breather on that, which made them happy,” Novak said with a smile.

Novak said the Visitors Center was prepared for the heat with ice packs but was thankful that no one fainted on the trails.

“You saw a lot of very sweaty people going for their cars and turning the air conditioner on,” he said.
