OTTAWA — In an effort to highlight the sacrifices that first responders, front-line workers and essential employees make during this historic time, state Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, supported a resolution adopted by the Illinois House unanimously that commends all of those who have continued to work on the frontlines of the COVID19 pandemic to keep communities running.

“Our Illinois Valley front-line workers are nothing short of reallife superheroes,” said Yednock.

“From the nurses at St. Elizabeth hospital, to the police officers throughout the Illinois Valley, to the grocery store workers, our community would not function without their hard work, commitment and selfless dedication to their jobs and to all of us.”

PUTNAM COUNTY FOOD PANTRY

Pantry to continue curbside pickup through July Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Putnam County Food Pantry has remained open, thanks to Michelle Carboni and a group of dedicated volunteers.

According to Judy Hopkins, vice president of the Putnam County Food Pantry, through July the pan-

try will continue curbside pickup.

Clients line up in the pantry parking lot and are greeted there by a volunteer. Based on the number of people in the client’s family, bags of food are then placed in the client’s car trunk.

The Putnam County Food Pantry

is open every Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. to anyone who lives in Putnam County. It is located in the Granville United Church of Christ, 103 N. Church. The pantry has plenty of food and household products and encourages anybody who needs food to visit the pantry.

U OF I EXTENSION Four Seasons Gardening Program will offer free summer series webinars The summer series of the University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening Program, which focuses on environmental stewardship, home gardening and backyard food production, gets underway the month of June. The public is invited to participate in this free webinar series.

The first session of the series is titled “Tomato Problems.” Tomatoes are one of the most popular and commonly grown plants in the home garden. Illinois Extension Horticulture Educator Ken Johnson will discuss common problems that plague tomatoes as well as ways to address them.

Webinars are available for viewing from wherever you have internet access by preregistering at go.illinois.edu/fourseasons.

Recorded videos of these sessions can be viewed following the program at go.illinois. edu/fourseasonsrecordings. Please note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all local county offices are closed and are unable to offer viewing options at those locations.

PUTNAM COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT

Library district to begin curbside service June 5

The Putnam County Public Library District will begin curbside service Friday, June 5. For times for each location, they will be announced on the library district’s website and social media during this period.

The district cannot order items from other libraries outside of Putnam County at this time. The district is only serving patrons within Putnam County. No one with a library card from a neighbor library outside of Putnam County will be able to check out items from any Putnam County branches at this time.

Call any of the branches ahead for staff to make a list of requests and to have orders ready. Staff will come out to vehicles and ask for library cards and place the items either in the back seat or in the back of a vehicle. Please wear a mask when picking up an order.

People may also order online through Prairiecat on the district’s website, putnamcountylibrary.org.

Items returned will have a seven-day quarantine period before someone else can check out the item again.

If someone would like to have a fax, copy, or laminate an item, staff can do that as well. Returning items can be placed in the drop box at local

ALICE C. FUEYO LACON — Alice C. Fueyo, 91, passed away May 25th at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Lacon.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and a private service of burial will be held at a later time.

Alice was born in Tampa, Fl. She moved as a child to Chicago, where she met and married Albert in 1949.

Survivors include six daughters, Sally Young in Hennepin, Tina Schneider (Steve Schneider) in Wellington Co., Mary Jo Perez in Spring Valley, Teresa Linville in Baraboo, Wi, Connie Fueyo (Eric Flores) in Oak View, Ca. and Mary Alice Fueyo in Elmwood Park, IL; and one son, Joseph Fueyo in Tampa, Fl. She had 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-greats.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one grand-

child, Cary Majerus in 2007.

Alice was a mother and homemaker, and raised her children mostly in Chicago and the suburbs. In the ‘60s, she loved PBS. She cooked with Julia Child, she learned basic guitar and the Russian language and painted with artists. She enjoyed the ballet and opera and cooked delicious Cuban food. She spoke English and Spanish.

Alice was a divorced mother of 7 who lived for 5 years in Hennepin and Granville in the early ’80s, and worked as a legal secretary then for 20 years more in Chicago. Life was not always easy for Alice. She loved her family and found joy in simple things — her true gift.

Contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Lacon, who cared for our mom with love, or to the Alzheimer’s Association at ALZ.org.

LILA M. MILLS Born: September 25, 1925; New Boston Died: May 21, 2020; Spring Valley MARK — Lila M. Mills, 94, of Mark passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2020, at St. Margaret’s Hospital, Spring Valley.

Graveside service was Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Granville, with Fr. Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating.

Due to the global pandemic, a memorial Mass will be at a later date.

She received her Master’s in library science at DePaul University. She was a librarian and worked for the Booz, Allen and Hamilton Firm in Chicago. Lila was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville. She was also a member of Rotary International and received the Paul Harris Fellowship award and the Community Service Award.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister, Tella Bea; and her sister, Rose Marie Sandaker.

Father-son duo accused of pot trafficking to face trial this summer PRINCETON — The father-andson duo charged with hauling 600 pounds of marijuana through Bureau County last winter will stand trial in August.

Colt French, 34, and Rory French, 59, both from Smith River, Calif., are accused of trafficking the drugs through the county in January.

Authorities say the two were pulled over on Interstate 80 in an RV that was found to have 10 duffel bags full of marijuana on board.

They initially claimed to have been on an overnight road trip to Chicago, but later admitted to Illinois State Troopers they were in possession of the drugs, and in fact, said they had made a similar run through the area in December of 2019.

The men were charged with Class X felony possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, which carries a base sentencing range of 6-30 years if convicted.

The two were represented on a telephone conference at a hearing May 19 in Bureau County Court before Judge C.J. Hollerich.

Attorneys Jack Rodgan, representing Colt French, and Sheldon Sorosky, representing Rory French asked the trial date be moved to Monday, Aug. 24. A final pretrial is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24. Their attorneys may submit a motion to suppress, which will be heard at an as yet undetermined date.

The men were released on $300,000 bond, 10% of which was applied for their release.

Energy assistance application period has been extended

ROCK FALLS — Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, income-eligible residents now have more time to apply for funding to help with energy bills, thanks to an extension of the deadline for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The program, due to end May 31, has been extended until June 30.

Illinois families are facing many challenges to cope with the COVID-19 virus. Some have lost jobs or had their hours of employment reduced. These circumstances could lead to difficulty in paying your utility bill. If you find yourself in that situation, there may be assistance available through Tri-County Opportunities Council’s LIHEAP program. This program can help pay a portion of an eligible household’s utility bill. Eligibility is mainly based on household size and income.

Anyone facing difficulty in paying their utility bill and has not applied yet is encouraged to contact Tri-County Opportunities Council as soon as possible. If a household has already received a LIHEAP benefit since Oct. 1, 2019, they still might be eligible for additional benefit through reconnection assistance.

LIHEAP applications will be taken through June 30, or until funds are exhausted. The gross income for the 30 days prior to the application date cannot exceed the following: one-person household, $1,561;

two-person household, $2,114; three-person household, $2,666; four-person household, $3,219; five-person household, $3,771; six-person household, $4,324.

Documents needed at the time of application are: proof of income for all household members for the previous 30 days including the day of application, proof of Social Security numbers for all members of the household, a copy of current heat and electric bills issued within the last 30 days (if energy directly paid for), a copy of rental agreement (if renting) showing that utilities are included, the monthly rental amount and landlord contact information, and proof the household received TANF or other benefits, such as Medical Eligibility or SNAP, if receiving assistance from the Illinois Department of Human Services.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tri-County Opportunities Council offices are no longer able to do in-person appointments for LIHEAP, but mailed, phone and faxed applications are being accepted. Residents should call 800-323-5434 to secure an application.

REMOTE LEARNING

Remote learning channel coming via Peoria’s PBS affiliate

Do you wish your kids could do their remote learning on the big screen in your living room rather than their laptops and tablets? The PBS affiliate in Peoria will make that happen.

The LaSalle, Marshall & Putnam County Regional Office of Education announced a partnership with WTVP, the PBS affiliate in Peoria, for a new broadcast TV channel devoted solely to remote learning. The new channel, WTVP REMOTE, should be on air later in the summer and in time for the 2020-21 school year.

“Broadcasting at 47.5, WTVP REMOTE has the potential to reach more than 200,000 households in a 20-county region of Central Illinois,” the education office said in a news release. “It fills a critical need for remote learning resources during the coronavirus pandemic and in future situations where classroom alternatives are required and can reinforce traditional classroom learning.”

WTVP REMOTE will be a resource to thousands of low-income urban families and rural residents in the region who do not have reliable access to high-speed internet, cable TV service or a computer. Under current quarantine conditions and in other natural disasters or school disruptions, those students are almost completely cut off from instructional resources.

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media With the west entrance and lower parking lot closed at Starved Rock State Park due to flooding, the first visitors made their way through the Route 71 entrance — and the day went pretty smoothly, officials said.

While some state parks opened earlier this month, Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks opened for the first time Friday since March.

The parks draw roughly 3 million visitors per year — about 544,000 visitors alone between March 1 and June 1 in a normal year.

The morning was a little quiet, but the parking started to fill up near noon. There were no closures due to the park exceeding its capacity. If the park reaches its capacity for visitors or parking, it will close temporarily until numbers decrease — a possibility this weekend.

“We had a pretty good opening day,” said Conservation Police Sgt. Phil Wire. “It wasn’t too packed. We had no problems with opening day issues. There were some that went off the trail and over some barricades, but that was it.”

Flooding still is restricting access to some areas of the park, and other areas of the park are open, but still muddy. Superintendent Alvin Harper said visitors should dress appropriately.

The Visitor Center is closed.

The Trailheads Concessions, however, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for hungry hikers. Carry-out orders can be placed at the counter and outdoor dining is available on the patio.

The Starved Rock Lodge now is open. Carry-out food service and outdoor dining are offered on the Lodge’s Veranda for paying customers of Starved Rock Lodge. Picnicking will not be allowed on the Veranda but is allowed on the pool patio.

Trail closures: • Matthiessen State Park lower dells area (access to the waterfalls) is closed due to flooding. Upper dells remain open as well as Vermillion River Area trails (second entrance south off of 178).

• Matthiessen horseback trails are closed due to conditions from the weather.

Putnam County Rotary Scholarships awarded GRANVILLE — Five outstanding Putnam County High School graduating seniors received special recognition by the Putnam County Rotary this month.

Shelby Eccles received the club’s Co-Op Student of the Year Award and $250 toward future education costs, recognizing her outstanding participation in the school’s work-education program at Illinois Valley Community Hospital. She obtained her Certified Nurse Assistant degree at Fieldcrest High School, and enrolled in the Area Career Center nursing program while a student at Putnam County High School, as another step toward a college degree and career in nursing. Her “higher” goals include becoming a Life Flight nurse. Rotary adds its thanks to Shelby for being a “front line” professional in these challenging times.

Molly Boyd was honored for “Student Service Above Self,” exemplifying the Rotary ideal of helping others locally and internationally, through her many extracurricular activities including her service as president of the Rotary-sponsored PCHS Interact Club during her senior year. The club’s recognition comes with a

donation to Interact. Her high school accomplishments have also included FFA leadership, basketball, track and field, volleyball, band, class officer positions, NHS, Panther PACC, theatre, extensive volunteer work and a part-time job. She now heads to U of I ACES, building toward a career in agriculture business, and many new opportunities to serve others, too.

An additional honor this year, recognition for “Exchange Student Service Above Self,” was awarded to Rotary Youth Exchange Student Valentina Daza Gutierrez of Colombia who became involved in PCHS academics and extracurriculars, even before her arrival last August, 2019.

She participated in Panteras, chorus, theatre, Interact and other activities, expanding fellow students’ global understanding while experiencing our own “foreign” culture. She has been a member of the Sandberg family in McNabb throughout the year, and will be heading back to Colombia shortly to begin college there.

Tianna Green was selected as this year’s recipient of the Knute Hammel Memorial Scholarship Award and $500 educational stipend, rec-

ognizing academic, extracurricular and community service achievements, to help her pursue a degree and career in business and psychology, starting out at Illinois Valley Community College. She has been active in Panteras, PACC, BP Power and volunteer work, also serving as class treasurer and holding a parttime job.

Megan Brooker received a $500 award presented in memory of Bill Klein, a Rotarian, businessman and strong supporter of youth programs and education, recognizing ambition, drive and determination as the keys to personal as well as vocational success. She has accomplished all that and more, having served as past president of PCHS Interact, graduating as valedictorian and concurrently earning her associate’s degree at Illinois Valley Community College. She had been active in the PCHS newspaper and yearbook, cross country, track and field, Interact and other volunteer efforts, and at IVCC she has been active in student government, the student ambassador program and peer tutoring, all while working parttime as well. Her future hope is to be an actuary or “big data” analyst.

Daniel Shore earns Ph.D. GRANVILLE — Daniel Shore, formerly of Granville, completed his doctorate in industrial-organizational psychology at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., on April 30.

Shore graduated as co-valedictorian from Putnam County High School in 2005, and then attended Bradley University, earning his bachelor’s degree with high honors in psychology and broadcast communications in 2009.

Concentrating his studies on the impact of employee Dr. Daniel Shore rewards and recognition in organizational settings, Shore received his master’s degree in industrial-organizational psychology at George Mason University in 2013.

Shore’s doctoral work and dissertation more specifically focused on the perceived fairness of rewards for members of workplace teams, and the effect that these rewards can have on retention of higher-performing team members. He is the founder and principal consultant of Strategies for Effective Teamwork, LLC. Dr. Shore is the son of Scott and Adriane Shore of Granville. He is married to Dr. Ariella Slovin, a pediatrician with Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. They reside in Georgetown.

Pritzker deploys 375 National Guard soldiers to Chicago

BY PETER HANCOCK Capitol News Illinois SPRINGFIELD — In the wake of violence, looting and arson that gripped the city of Chicago over the weekend, Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Sunday he has deployed 375 Illinois National Guard soldiers to aid the city’s police department and other first responders in maintaining law and order.

The violence broke out Saturday night in Chicago and many other cities across the United States in response to the death in Minneapolis of George

Floyd, an unarmed black man who died May 25 after being pinned to the ground for nearly nine minutes with a white police officer’s knee on his neck.

During a news conference Sunday in Chicago, Pritzker stood with three of the state’s most high-profile African-American leaders — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton and Cook County State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx — to defend the rights of peaceful protesters while blaming the violence on organized outsiders.

“I also think it’s important to rec-

ognize that for much of the day (Saturday), the protests here in Chicago were beautiful, massive and peaceful,” Pritzker said. “That is as much a part of the story of what’s happening in this city, in this country, as anything else.

But late in the evening yesterday, the protests became about violence and damage, and that changes the conversation away from the terrible acts that took George Floyd’s life, away from the insidious racism that we all have a role in addressing.”

Lightfoot said she respects the people expressing their First Amendment

right to free speech and that she has taken part in a number of protests herself over the years.

“But we also have an obligation to make sure that when there are elements amongst the protesters or others who join the fray that don’t have respect for peaceful, nonviolent protests, but do have as their design the decision to bring hammers, shovels, bottles of urine, excrement, accelerants as we saw throughout yesterday and into the evening, we have an obligation also to protect life and liberty and property.”
