Putnam County Rotary furnishes Freedom House with grant funds

GRANVILLE — Putnam County Rotary has made life a little more comfortable for those residing at Freedom House, which serves as a five-county domestic violence shelter located in Princeton.

The Putnam County Rotary Club was awarded a 2020-21 district community grant and it was used to furnish several rooms at the shelter.

The grants fund small-scale, shortterm activities that address the needs in local communities and communities abroad. They exist to support the Rotary Foundation’s mission “to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.”

Upon receiving grant funding, the PC Rotary Club matched the $1,500 grant with club funds raised through

fundraisers and donations, Rotary member Beth Acunius said.

PC Rotarians participated in the “Adopt-a-Room” program at Freedom House, a free emergency and longterm shelter located in Princeton, assisting in a room makeover of the community living/dining room in the long-term living area.

Rotary members Beth Acuncius, Brenda Bickerman, Debbie Buffington, Nancy Burress, Tina Dolder and Jim Mack, with the assistance of Trisha Schafer, Freedom House’s community outreach and facilities manager, cleaned, painted and decorated the room.

With the help and generosity of Laura Pypno and Bruce Steinberg of Steinberg’s Furniture in Peru, the club was able to donate a couch, chair/ottoman combination and a Laz-E-Boy

recliner. The room was accessorized with end tables, lamps, a TV, blankets and other small decorative items.

Several club members also donated new bath towel sets for Freedom House clients to use. Quentin Buffington, owner of Erebos Photography, and Debbie Buffington also donated a large landscape photo, printed on metal by Black River Imaging of Springfield, Mo. Freedom House provides a safe haven for domestic and sexual violence victims and their children. Their service area encompasses Bureau, Henry, Marshall, Putnam and Stark Counties and it is supported by government and corporate grants and community donations. Pickleball workshop set for June 5

HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District will be sponsoring a Pickleball 101 workshop at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 5.

This workshop will cover the basics of the game, the rules, player safety, apparel, hydration and equipment needs. After the orientation there will be time for actually playing the game.

There is a maximum number of 12 people per workshop. Paddles, balls and water will be provided. You must wear court shoes — absolutely no flip flops.

Putnam County High School students present ‘Little Women the Musical’

Shows scheduled for June 4 and 5 GRANVILLE — The Putnam County High School Theatre Department will be presenting “Little Women the Musical,” book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein and music by Jason Howland, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 4, and at 2 p.m. and

7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 5.

“Little Women the Musical” is based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott. The show follows the adventures of the March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. In her pursuit of becoming a famous author Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication but is met with little interest at which point her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her she has to do better and write

more from herself. She takes his advice and tells the story of the March sisters growing up in Civil War America.

The cast stars Jentsie Petersen as Jo, Jaden Oquenda as Meg, Madalyn Lorentzen as Beth, Lillian Sandberg as Amy, Wesley Grimshaw as Professor Bhaer, Paige Terando as Marmee, Mavrick Holocker as Laurie, Alysia Gonzalez as Aunt March, Joshua Mat-

tingly as Mr. Brooke, and Jordan Ladson as Mr. Laurence.

Performances will be in the Putnam County High School auditorium.

GRANVILLE — Mark Hamilton of Granville is quickly making a name for himself around the area as “the bike guy.”

Just in the last year, he has donated hundreds of bikes to local organizations which have then gone on to families in need or raffled off to support benevolent organizations.

What started as a small pet project with the Putnam County Rotary has grown into an act of kindness that’s even spread as far as Chicago. Hamilton recently donated bikes to the West Chicago Police Department which planned to gift them to underprivileged children and families.

Back home in Putnam County, Hamilton’s most recent bike donation was given to the Granville Police Department, which accepted 25 new bikes that Hamilton has collected from various area donors.

Hamilton said many of the bikes he receives have damage that prevents them from being sold in stores. When he comes across bicycles that can’t be sold, he snags them up and repairs the broken gears, pedals or bent wheels before donating them back to the community.

Hamilton works closely with The Bike Place in Princeton, which has donated several hours of time and bike parts to help with Hamilton’s efforts.

Hamilton recently met with Granville Police Chief Michael Padilla in Axline Pharmacy in downtown Granville, which graciously allowed for the storage of the 25 bicycles. Upon receiving the donation, Padilla expressed gratitude and said his department plans to raffle off some of the bikes at the coming Granville Days celebration to raise money for local organizations.

Padilla also plans to give away bikes to children through the Shop with a Cop event, where underprivileged children are selected to go shopping with a cop around Christmas time to purchase gifts for their families.

It takes time and money to coordinate the bike giveaway program Hamilton has gotten going this past year, but he said he does it because, “it makes me feel good inside” and it’s filling a void that needed to be filled.

“We’re all just trying to pay it forward,” he said.

Hamilton welcomes others to join in on the efforts of giving back. Anyone

who would be interested in helping him with his bike project would be welcomed. He said the Putnam County Rotary is also always in need of more volunteers to keep up with the community projects it takes on to enhance its service area.

In fact, Solberg has introduced nearly 100 new varieties of hostas.

Some of his better known introductions include “Curly Fries,” “Orange Marmalade,” “First Blush,” “First Frost” and “Sharp Dressed Man.” He plans to bring some of his newer hosta introductions to this special event on July 18.

From 1998-2001, he served as editor of The Hosta Journal, the principle publication of the American Hosta Society. He presently serves as Historian of the AHS. Solberg is the recipient of the 2003 Alex J. Summers Distinguished Merit Award from the AHS and of the 2008 Eunice Fisher Distinguished Hybridizer Merit Award from the AHS. In short, Bob Solberg is one of the top experts in the country on hostas and is a nationally known speaker on all topics related to hostas. He’s a personable, laid back kind of guy with a good sense of humor, organizers said.

Born: September 28, 1940 Died: May 25, 2021 GRANVILLE — William “Bill” Edward York Sr. went home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 25, 2021.

He was born September 28, 1940, and was the son of Glenn York and Helen (Foster) York. He grew up in McNabb and went to Sprinkleburg School, a one-room schoolhouse in Granville, Illinois. He continued his education at Hopkins High School in Granville, Illinois.

Services were Saturday, May 29, 2021, at Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel, Granville. Burial was at Friends Cemetery, McNabb.

He married Virginia (Lehman) on October 5, 1958, at the McNabb United Methodist Church where they both remain members, and have been for 62 years.

They lived in McNabb while raising their three children, William (Maria) York Jr., Vickie (Daryel) Petersen and Jeanette (Benet) Anderson. They have five grandchildren, Rebecca (Jeremy) Sneath, Matthew (Tracy) York, Emily (Matt) Aichele, Ellen Anderson and Sophie Petersen; and five great-grandchildren, Hunter Sneath, Cody Sneath, MaKenna York, Natalie York and

Bill worked for Griffith Seed Company for 43 years as seed corn processor and continued his career at Grassers Heating and Plumbing as parts supervisor for 9 years until his retirement.

He met many good friends he cherished along the way.

He was an avid woodworker and carver, creating so many unique pieces. He loving and prayerfully hand carved countless handheld crosses and comfort birds to hand out to someone in need, or just to someone he loved.

He never knew just how he touched people with this ministry, but now he does.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in McNabb. Also, served as a Boy Scouts Leader for many years and was a member of the National Woodcarving Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Janet Rickey of Henry and Margaret Meredith of Marseilles.

Six Putnam County staff members have been recognized for Excellence in Education. Superintendent Carl Carlson released the following: • Kelly McCurry has been with Putnam County High School for six years, leading instruction in Math 3, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry and AP Calculus.

In addition to her primary role as teacher, she has been the junior class sponsor and Scholastic Bowl coach. She has also contributed to the improvement of the school through her membership on the AP Committee, Math EPIC Committee, Return to Learn Committee, Bridging the Gap team and as an individual mentor for students in P3.

McCurry was recognized for her continuous improvement of instructional practices, a focus on student learning and growth, and contributions to the overall learning environment of PCHS. Throughout a difficult year for all, she has remained steadfast in her approaches to instruction by exploring and applying new technologies. Further, she has been a resource and leader among other teachers by openly sharing her learnings on new instructional practices and management of learning systems.

• Jessica Lenkaitis is in her 13th year in education and her 10th year teaching at Putnam County Jr. High. She teaches seventh-and-eighth-grade social studies.

Lenkaitis was recognized for her dedication to her students as well as compassion. She develops positive relationships with her students to help get to know them and their interests. This allows her to connect social studies to their lives to help them better understand and learn the material. She genuinely cares about her students and strives to prepare them to be successful citizens. She is very willing to give her time at school to provide any student the opportunity to be successful. Her passion for PCJH students makes her very deserving of this award.

• Monica Frund has been a teacher at Putnam County Elementary School for eight years. During that time, she has taught fifth grade for seven years and special education for one year. On any given day, you can walk into her classroom and see students engaged and learning.

Frund was recognized because she is a positive role model for her students and cares for each individual student.

She advocates for students and celebrates their uniqueness. She is an asset to Putnam County schools and is well deserving of the Excellence in Education award.

This past fall saw her step up again as the our kindergarten team started the school year shorthanded. She really took the time to help the long-term substitute learn and prepare for kindergarten on top of getting her own classroom prepared. All the while that she is helping the one kindergarten class stay on top of things, she was also putting forth massive efforts to plan and instruct her own class.

Serafini took on the lead role in a year where we needed that leadership and her expertise in kindergarten really shines through. She has organized socially-distanced activities for students to participate in and learn as well as continued to teach the standards based curriculum while adhering to the COVID guidelines the district has in place. Leading the way in education for kindergarten in our building as well as demonstrating to others that all efforts put forward with love, come across tenfold by continuing to conduct lessons as close to normal as possible while staying safe. Serafini demonstrates daily what Excellence in Education truly is.

• Daniel Ramirez has been with the Putnam County School District for the past two years and brings over 20 years of educational technology experience to PC. He demonstrates an incredible work ethic, collaborative personality and a vision of what is needed to give students, families and communities the best technological support possible. We all thought that Ramirez’s first year was busy as he worked to get our systems up to speed while handling emergencies that always seem to pop up.

Well, the pandemic hit and everyone’s world pivoted at the snap of the fingers.

Everyone was impacted instantly.

Ramirez was on cue with suggestions and needs he thought would help us close the digital divide, increase communication avenues between home and school, and to also try to make high speed Wi-Fi available outside each of our four schools. All of the staff at PC stepped up big time. However, Ramirez is a huge reason that remote learning was even possible for our students and staff. Ramirez truly deserves the recognition of Excellence in Education.

• Katie Main has been a cornerstone for our district during this pandemic.

As everyone knows, the IDPH/ISBE recommendations have changed so often it is almost impossible to keep

everything straight. Her duties as school nurse were taken to a whole new level during this pandemic. She has remained consistent and on top of every change along the way. She was instrumental in making sure contract tracing was executed consistently and she spent countless hours contacting families even outside of her normal work day. She has been able to do all of this while being professional and keeping the rest of us sane along the way.

Main definitely deserves the recognition of Excellence in Education.

Carlson also said: “As the exiting superintendent of our PC Schools, I want to thank every single staff member for their ‘Excellence’ and dedication each and every day, but even more so during the pandemic. I want to congratulate each award recipient for demonstrating going above and beyond.

Normally, the Regional Office of Education would honor these individuals with a plaque at a banquet with the other school districts. Due to the limitations of large social gatherings, the ROE still wanted to recognize people for their efforts and left that up to each district to celebrate. The PC District will present each winner a plaque and gift card in honor of their demonstrated ‘excellence.’, Thanks!”

Los Ranchitos serves everyone’s Mexican favorites Since I’m never one to pass up Mexican food, Los Ranchitos of Princeton isn’t a new spot for me, but it is one worth sharing.

The quaint and quirky restaurant offers a full range of appetizers, salads, lunch and dinner specials, combos and signature entrees.

My gang eats here not infrequently, and though we’ve tried a lot of their menu options, we frequently gravitate back towards our favorites. This time, we decided to stick with our go-to’s along with an appetizer and a couple desserts for carryout. The food was ready exactly at the time quoted, and everything was hot and fresh when we arrived home with it.

Because every meal starts out with complimentary chips and salsa, we’d never ordered the bean dip before now. It was served in a surprisingly large portion, filling a pie pan-sized plate, and topped with queso.

The refried beans were creamy and salty and a perfect complement to the fresh salsa, so we highly recommend it.

For entrees, we went with a deluxe chicken burrito, a ground beef chimichanga and the steak chilaquiles. The burrito, smothered in queso, looks unassuming, though huge, and is deceptive in its appearance of simplicity. It’s stuffed with savory shredded chicken and perfectly seasoned and textured rice and beans, along with shredded lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream.

The chimichanga, a fried meat burrito, is a crispy, lightly seasoned treat that comes with fresh guacamole and sour cream for dipping along with chopped tomatoes and seasoned rice.

My favorite – and standard order – is the steak chilaquiles. Historically a breakfast dish, chilaquiles is the perfect combination of nachos and a deconstructed enchilada. A bed of crispy corn tortilla chips is topped with chargrilled steak or chicken along with peppers and onions,

The sauce soaks into some of the chips, leaving the rest crispy for the perfect mix of textures. It’s served with a heap of guac, sour cream, pico de gallo and seasoned rice.

We ended the meal with desserts I recommend saving room for. The sopapilla is a

fried flour tortilla nestled in honey, swirled with chocolate and strawberry sauce, and served as is or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A perfect end to dinner, it’s a decadent yet light dessert nacho.

We also ordered the xangos (pronounced changos), a riff on a cheesecake egg roll. It comes drizzled with sundae

sauces and topped with whipped cream. Due to the drive, the cream melted on ours, but the flavors and texture of the xangos were still spot on.

For under $50, my crew and I stuffed ourselves and then went back for leftovers the next day. If you’re a fan of Mexican fare, Los Ranchitos

needs to be part of your regular rotation.
