BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com OGLESBY — The pleasure of getting outside to play 18 holes is the goal of all golfers, but more and more are choosing to attempt to shoot par by throwing rather than swinging.

There are almost 6,000 disc golf courses across the nation registered on the website DGReview.com, a dramatic increase from the 3,000 listed in 2009. There are local courses in Otta-

wa, Princeton, Spring Valley, Streator, Marseilles, Lacon, Roanoke, Sandwich, Pontiac and El Paso. There are also several courses in Joliet, Rockford, Bloomington and Peoria.

“There are more than 200 courses within 100 miles of Oglesby,” Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) instructor and faculty liaison Wes Black said.

Black runs the IVCC Disc Golf League which plays at 4:30 p.m. every Monday from April through September. The

course is always open and free to the public and is located behind the track and baseball field. Players park in the south lot and the first hole, or basket for disc golfers, is located behind a large tree.

He said the school was approached in 2009 about installing a disc golf course.

“We thought it would give students a very inexpensive thing to do in-between classes or after school. The administration was very receptive, and the Student Government Association donated the

money for the baskets, and volunteers did the rest,” Black said.

The course opened in June of 2010.

Tournaments were hosted, and the proceeds from those and from selling T-shirts covered the cost of installing concrete tee pads in 2012.

Black said disc golf is more family oriented than traditional golf, and he regularly sees families on the course with children of all ages.

PRINCETON — At the annual Illinois Emergency Services Management Association (IESMA) training summit and President’s Banquet, Bureau County EMA Director Keenan Campbell was named 2017 Emergency Manager of the Year.

IESMA President Ron Graziano stated during his presentation, “Keenan has been working hard to integrate technology, education and private partnerships to build one of the top emergency management programs in the state of Illinois. In doing this, he has complimented a ‘one man show’ with volunteers, technology and equipment to have a truly state of the art preparedness and response agency to serve his county.

Making great strides for Cystic Fibrosis Fourth annual fundraiser walk to be held June 10

BY GOLDIE RAPP news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — The fourth annual Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Great Strides Walk will be held Saturday, June 10, at Zearing Park.

Princeton native Cheriz Kunkel started this walk in 2014. To date, it has raised more than $50,000 for the CF Foundation, which is working hard to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Kunkel has dealt with CF all her life and does 10 breathing treatments a day to keep her lung function stable.

“Growing up and living with CF can be really difficult. Yet, the community of Princeton always made me feel loved and supported. People cheered me on in local 5Ks, visited when I was sick, sent cards (and) understood when I had coughing attacks in

Cheriz Kunkel, Princeton native public. I’m forever grateful for this town,” she said. “I brought the Nationwide CF Great Strides walk to Princeton because the town has a passion for helping out. Plus, CF is not that common of a disease, and our small community has had over half a dozen people living with CF.” Kunkel was born during a time when there was no specific medication for CF. But throughout the years, the CF Foundation has made strides with medications to help ease the symptoms of this illness.

Kunkel said in the past three years, there have been two new gene-targeting drugs come to market.

“This means they help correct the defect in the CF mutations (each person has two CF mutations),” she said.

Today, there are now even better gene-targeting drugs in the

last rounds of clinical trials.

Drugs that are more effective with less threatening side effects (like liver damage) than the first two, Kunkel said.

“However, the gene correcting drugs don’t completely fix the problem, only increase the effectiveness. Plus, they are not for all mutations, which means only a portion of the CF community can take them,” she added.

Lately, the CF Foundation has been talking about gene-editing.

While it will be a while before defective DNA (CF mutations) can be cut out and replaced with non CF Mutations DNA, Kunkel said it’s progress the CF Foundation is starting to look at the option.

“It is becoming a possibility.

This would mean a cure. Now we need to push more than ever to help this road map to a cure become a possibility,” she said.

The CF Walks are the foundation’s largest fundraising event.

“This Princeton walk is now a part of a nation-wide walk where thousands of people walk to cure CF. I know the permanent damage in my lungs means I will never see my lung function up past 60 percent, but we can stop it from progressing for everyone living with it and cure it for future generations with CF,” Kunkel said.

At this year’s event, the goal to raise $20,000. Currently, Kunkel is looking for business sponsors and employer-matching gifts to help reach her goal. A Gold Sponsor is $500; Silver is $250; and Bronze is $100.

The event is fun for the whole family. Participants walk for a cause and get to enjoy face painting, balloon creations, a DJ, silent auctions, raffles and lunch.

He also said advanced golfers enjoy playing in competitive leagues which are common on most courses.

“We started the IVCC Disc Golf League in the summer of 2010. Our league is a two-disc scramble very similar to a ball golf scramble. We have nine baskets, but we have two distinct tee pads (shorts and longs) on every hole, so we play 18 different holes during Monday league,” he said.

A significant difference between traditional golf and disc golf is affordability. Black said almost every course is free, and you only need one disc to play, although most disc golfers carry several. At a typical cost of $6 to $18 each, Black said he’d spend more than that on just balls in traditional golf.

Discs are available at the campus book store and also at area sporting goods stores.

“A competitive golfer will carry a bag full; I carry 18. They make discs that turn left, go straight, or turn right because it’s common to need to throw around trees. There are drivers, mid-ranges and putters, so even novice players will usually carry at least one of each. And the disc will last you for years,” Black said.

Recreational par for the IVCC course is 63. Each of the nine holes features two tees from different approaches. The nine red tees, the shorter holes, are all Par 3 with one Par 4 on hole No. 6. The nine blue tees, the longer holes, have three Par 3s, four Par 4s and two Par 5s. A round typically consists of playing both sets of tee pads.

As most disc golf courses are installed in already existing parks, any road is typically outof-bounds.

In order to increase the challenges provided by the course, IVCC has planted an additional 22 trees to throw around.

He added that exercise is another appealing factor of disc golf. His GPS will register one mile per nine holes, and sometimes they play 36 holes or more during a day.

“If you want to go for a walk, you may as well be throwing a disc,” he said.

The Illinois Valley will now be much more competitive in bringing new jobs and new investment to the area thanks to an economic tool State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) helped activate for the region.

Rezin announced May 16 the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has certified the enterprise zone for LaSalle County and surrounding counties, which allows the Upper Illinois River Valley Development Authority (UIRVDA) to officially activate the enterprise zone for the region. Rezin has been working with local, regional and state officials for months to activate this enterprise zone.

“This is a big deal and a game changer for the future of jobs and investment in the Illinois River Valley,” Rezin said. “An enterprise zone is at the heart of economic development. The first thing site developers ask when they visit communities is if an enterprise zone is active.

If a community isn’t in an active enterprise zone, all too often, that new investment and new business go elsewhere. The Illinois Valley can now compete much better for these jobs and investment. I am confident job expansion, job

creation and investment will come to our region as a direct result of activating this enterprise zone.”

Enterprise zones are a locally-driven tool that provides financial incentives for companies seeking to develop or create new jobs in the enterprise zone.

This could be property tax reductions, an investment tax credit, sales tax exemptions on building materials, utility tax exemptions on natural gas/electricity, and the telecommunication excise tax, among others.

These benefits can last up to 25 years.

“Enterprise zones are about bringing long-term investments to our communities,” Rezin said. “It can’t be overstated that this is vital for our region.

I want to thank the mayors, county leaders, members of the Upper Illinois River Valley Development Authority, and DCEO for working with me to make this a reality. The Illinois Valley has so much to offer already – a solid workforce, good transportation infrastructure, and communities that care about their neighbors. Those positives combined with this enterprise zone can be the catalyst that drives more economic development to our region.”

IHA recognizes IVCH program physicians, nurses, quality improvement leaders and hospital administrators to develop solutions to improve care, according to the IHA. The transitional care program at IVCH was started to help the hospital reduce readmissions for patients who have pneumonia, heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Patients who sign up for the program are visited at home

HELEN HUNDLEY HENNEPIN — Helen B. Hundley, 95, of Hennepin died Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Heartland Health Care Center in Henry.

Helen was born Dec. 1, 1921, in Murrayville to Virgil and Ida “Sis” (Mason) Vedder Sr. She married Vernon Hundley on Oct. 26, 1946. Vernon passed away June 5, 2006.

She was a member of the Hennepin United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Hennepin American Legion Auxiliary and Magnolia Eastern Star. Helen was also a trustee for Hennepin Water District and treasurer for the village of Hennepin. Helen and her husband, Vernon, were both recipients of the Citizen of the Year Award for Hennepin.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne (Pat) Hundley of Hennepin and William Hundley of Danville; one daughter, Debra (Larry) Doyle of Hennepin; nine grandchildren, Jeff Hundley, Stephanie Holmes, Corey Doyle, Gabe Doyle, Kris Doyle, Sean Sheldon, Brock Sheldon, Becky Jordan and Odesa Gillen; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Donald Vedder and Virgil Vedder Jr.; one sister, Marian; and one daughter-in-law, Diane Hundley.

Services were held Friday, May 26, at the Hennepin United Methodist Church in Hennepin with the Rev. Joshua Wiggs officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Hennepin.

Visitation was held Thursday, May 25, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville.

Contributions may be made to the Hennepin United Methodist Church or Hennepin Fire Department.

Pallbearers were Corey Doyle, Jeff Hundley, Kris Doyle, Gabe Doyle, Mike Holmes, Stephanie Holmes and Rick Seibert. Honorary pallbearers were Gil Tonozzi, Chuck Berry, Gene Seibert, Cecil Blankenship, Mike Larkin and Fred Sammons.

KENNETH KUNKEL

MILFORD, Del. — Kenneth Kunkel, 83, of Milford, Del., formerly of Granville, died Monday, May 22, 2017, at his residence.

Kenneth was born June 20, 1933, in Granville to August and Teresa (Blume) Kunkel.

He graduated from St. Bede Academy in Peru in 1950 and St. Bede Jr. College in 1952. Kenneth earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., and completed his theological studies at St. Bede. He was ordained to the priesthood at St. Bede in 1959. He served as an assistant pastor in Peru and also in Ottawa. Because he changed his mind regarding mandatory celibacy for priest, he left its active ministry in 1970, and was employed by the city of Chicago as an employment counselor. In 1974 he was hired by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Hines as a training officer, and was transferred to Washington, D.C., in 1981. He was the national manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs Disability Employment Program. He retired in 1998.

Kenneth was a member of St. John the Apostle Church in Milford, Del. He was a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Survivors include one sister, Sister Teresa Kunkel, O.S.F; six brothers, Aloysius (Rita) Kunkel of Lostant, Richard (Mary) Kunkel of Wyanet, Lawrence Kunkel of Princeton, Joseph Kunkel of Tiskilwa, Eugene (Joan) Kunkel of Granville and Christopher (Sharon) Kunkel of Mark; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Astrid van Wees of Milford, Del. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, August Kunkel; and two sisters-in-law, Ann Kunkel and Louise Kunkel.

Visitation was held Friday, May 26, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Burial was in St. Anthony’s PHYLLIS READ Cemetery in Hennepin.

At 1:31 a.m. on May 20, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 89 in Granville Township. Derek T. Simpson, 29, of Joliet was northbound on Route 89 when his vehicle left the road, struck a guardrail, overturned and then caught fire.

Simpson was transported to St. Margaret’s Hospital by PCEMS and was later transferred to OSF St. Francis in Peoria. Simpson was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and DUI. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department was also assisted by the Standard Fire Department.

Aurora man arrested on cocaine felony charge OTTAWA — At approximately 4:20 p.m. on May 22 Tri-DENT agents, assisted

by LaSalle County Sheriff’s investigators and deputies, conducted a buy/ bust operation in a parking lot in the 3000 block of North Route 71 in Ottawa.

During the operation, Tri-DENT agents conducted a controlled purchase of approximately 13 grams of purported cocaine from Robert A. Trevino, 22, of 2046 Fox

Pointe Drive in Aurora.

Trevino was taken into custody without incident and was transported to the LaSalle County Jail by sheriff’s deputies.

Following the investigation, Trevino was charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, cocaine, a Class 1 felony.

Trevino is being held at the LaSalle County Jail awaiting a felony bond hearing.

here’s more than one reason I hesitated before venturing toward this topic including the overwhelming amount of examples available for use; the directions it could be taken; and what will likely be its ineffectiveness to help remedy the situation.

I’m writing as generally as possible because to include specific information and examples is to drown in the constantly evolving tsunami of scandal, hyperbole and the refusal to accept any responsibility. Simply put, many in politics no longer work for what’s good for those who they are supposed to be representing.

The problem of not being able to function as a reasonable collective exists throughout the political spectrum. It’s a winner-take-all game, and the players seem to be interested only in their careers and the interests of their deep-pocketed benefactors.

On the national stage, the media has become a favorite

target of some claiming negative and biased coverage. It’s supposedly the reason for the unsuccessful attempts to legislate, yet there’s little to no responsibility taken by those who are on camera or online saying the very things which are causing them their own problems.

An elected leader, no matter their office or party, can’t willfully mislead, engage in ridiculous exaggeration or openly admit to being obstructive and expect the reported story to be warmly receptive.

In the Illinois legislature, many are being paid annual salaries and stipends totaling more than $90,000 for a part-time job they haven’t been doing for two years. As Illinois steadily declines, desperate for reform in many areas, our leaders won’t even reform themselves.

Along with receiving pay that’s far more than what neighboring states pay their officials, the Illinois legislature also gets health and pension benefits most of us can only fantasize about.

COMMENTARY Dave Cook Stalemates at all levels of government generally revolve around animosity toward the other side of the aisle. Rather than governing as Americans, our elected representatives seem to have largely chosen to function as members of their party to the exclusion of all else.

Our leaders seem to only be interested in control. Appointments or votes are withheld because of upcoming elections.

Legislation is stonewalled because of the party of who introduced it, regardless of its content. Legislation is introduced despite it being harmful to the greater good because those who will benefit from it are big campaign donors. Rule changes can be introduced simply to help the party in power remain in power.

an Illinois political action campaign called “Throw the Bums Out.” It would work toward unseating as many in Springfield as possible, regardless of political party. I hope this becomes successful, and I think many would also enjoy seeing it become a national movement.

To write about the problems of our political system and those working within it is a bottomless pit. You have to start somewhere though, and voting across the board to remove as many of our ineffective state officials as possible is a good place to begin.

However, it’s going to mean voters will actually need to go vote. They’re going to have to set aside the reality show mentality. They’re also going to need to do what many politicians seem incapable of — choosing what’s best for the state, not their party.

Let’s bring back Gov. Jim Edgar

he state many of us hold dear is being wrecked by elected officials of both parties. I say, let’s sweep them all off the table and bring popular, effective former Gov. Jim Edgar out of retirement.

Gov. Bruce Rauner is into his third year without ever having proposed a credible balanced budget, with nothing on the horizon.

Rauner has also talked about the need for a big infrastructure program as well as education finance reforms, both badly needed. Yet he has never proposed anything for either. Budget, infrastructure, education — that’s pretty much what state government is all about.

And the collateral wreckage is incalculable. Higher education is imploding; nonprofit social service agencies are undergoing a die-off; business investment is tanking because of fiscal instability; and uncertainty, and people across Illinois are in a deep funk about their state, which probably encourages flight.

It is surprising that after a successful career doing deals in the private sector, Rauner is an abysmal failure at deal-making in Springfield.

House Speaker Mike Madigan is behaving no better. After half a century in office, Speaker (and Illinois Democratic Party chair) Madigan has ossified in place.

After being called corrupt and the worst kind of scalawag by Rauner in endless ads and even a movie, Madigan is now obsessed with knocking the governor off his pillar in 2018, while in the meantime, the state and its needs be damned.

Then, at stage left, there is the silent Greek chorus of state legislators. I have come to think of the present set of lawmakers as “the little people.”

They have convinced themselves their re-election is more important to the state than is the state’s well-being itself.

As a result, they cower, voiceless, in fear of doing anything to upset their patrons, the governor and speaker respectively, who hold the money and power critical to their re-election.

I am fascinated by how little most

considered our greatest national leader. He did what almost no current politician would ever do — appoint opposing rivals to cabinet positions. This wisdom allowed him to make use of their strengths and presented him with the benefit of having his own ideas challenged before making decisions. Today’s political leaders don’t want to have their ideas challenged, and there seems to be little room for constructive discussion. Winning is what matters.

Of course, voters are ultimately responsible for correcting this predicament. The largest challenge with this is, unfortunately, getting them to vote. Voter turnout at its best is still pathetically low.

Another problem is single issue voting. In their neglect to become more informed and gain a more well-rounded sense of the issues, people often end up voting against many of their own best interests.

If state funding were required to keep the lights on for Friday night football, there would never have been a budget impasse. Outrage would have forced action.

I say it’s time to bring back twoterm Republican governor Jim Edgar (1991-98). (Disclosure: I have not discussed this with old friend Edgar, as I know what his wife would say.)

Edgar took over during a budget crisis and brought it into balance.

Those who went into his office to seek more spending came to call him “Gov. No.” When Edgar left office, the state had a budget surplus.

Edgar was the first governor to address the state’s pension funding shortfall, though sharply increased payments into the undernourished retirement funds did not begin until he was safely out of office.

In 1993, folks along the Mississippi River suffered a once-in-a-century flood. They were devastated; thousands of homes and small towns ruined. Though he couldn’t, like King Canute, order the waters to recede, Edgar focused state resources and his own attention laser-like on giving comfort and support to the victims. His efforts should be a Harvard Business School case study in public leadership.

Edgar left office with the highest approval ratings of any governor in Illinois history.

We need an experienced hand running the state. What we have hasn’t worked, and apparently isn’t going to work.

I say, let’s bring back Jim Edgar.

Disappointed in Rep. Jerry Long To the Editor, Earlier this month, Republican State Rep. Jerry Long voted against giving women equal pay for equal work when he voted no twice — once in committee and once on the House floor. The bill, HB2462, overwhelmingly passed 91-24 in the House. At a time when Illinois is in crisis, I find it difficult to understand why Rep. Long would choose to vote against a bill that would help so many women, especially in his own town of Streator, where the post-industrial economy has hit working families hard there. If the Republican Party touts itself as the party that promotes family values, wouldn’t helping working women earn a decent wage help stabilize families? More families rely on women’s salaries as men continue to deal with the effects of the Great Recession.

According to the Institute of Women Policy Research, when single mothers earn equal pay for their work, they are less likely to receive services, such as Medicaid or income security, from the government. This saves money in the long run. Over a 40-year period, women on average lose $434,000 to career wage gaps with college-educated women losing even more — $713,000 over the course of their career, according to the Center for American Progress. With the revenue problem in the state of Illinois, I would imagine lawmakers would support the idea of equal pay for equal work, so that women would pay more taxes to help address some of the fiscal issues plaguing the state.

I am disappointed in our state Rep. Jerry Long and his vote against women!

Warning: Exercise can be dangerous

I

always laugh when people ask me if I run. Some are actually looking right at me and can’t come to a logical answer to that question.

Now, I run errands, and I run out of patience, but to say I physically move my legs quickly up and down, propelling my body in a forward motion —no, can’t say that I do. I could probably work up a dash if a small child was in imminent danger of being hit by a speedy automobile, but short of impending death, not much would motivate me to run.

First of all, my body is not built for it. I don’t have long, lanky legs. The adjectives to describe them would veer more to the side of short, fat and stumpy. With a little effort they could become leaner, but lithe and willowy could never enter the picture.

I also am a little top heavy.

I’m afraid the Laws of Inertia might prove fatal if I got all of this bulk going at once and then was forced to halt rapidly. I just don’t think I could make it all stop. It would be like the lead time a locomotive would need to stop for a bovine blocking the tracks. There’s going to be a mess!

I know this from a near-fatal experience I once had in an aerobics class.

I was happily (OK, not so happily) doing jumping jacks, when I was accosted by some sort of wild criminal who was holding a knife to my throat. I got no demands for money (Where would I be keeping it in the horrible exercise outfit I was wearing?), so I couldn’t imagine what this thief might want. It was then that I realized that the underwire in my bra had cut loose and worked its pointy way up to my neck.

It’s a lucky thing my terror froze me because one more jumping jack, and I could have experienced a fatal stabbing to the carotid artery. Looking back on it all, I shudder to think how my obituary would have read — “Memorials may be directed to Playtex

Research Foundation.’’

Despite my reluctance to exercise, and the fact that it can sometimes be dangerous for me, I know I need to do it. It is the same with exercising our faith. Sometimes it hurts. Sometimes it’s embarrassing to be vulnerable and put on the leotard of God and go traipsing off to Jazzercise.

Sometimes we fall off the step aerobics stool and twist our ankles. When we try too hard, we may encounter a little pain, so we need to do the ‘B’ version of the exercise. You know, the one that the perky, firm instructor demonstrates so that the fat girls can keep up with Suzy Showoff.

That’s OK, though, because the effort makes the difference. As long as we keep trying, progress will be made, and our faith muscles will increase. Slowly, but surely we can bulk ourselves up to Arnold size and stand victorious over the fat and flab of a weak faith.

BASEBALL

Marquette beats Panthers in regional final GRANVILLE — Ottawa Marquette beat the Putnam County Panthers 4-1 on May 22 in the championship game of the Granville Class 1A Regional.

Caleb Dzierzynski was the losing pitcher for the Panthers, going six innings and allowing nine hits. He struck out eight and didn’t walk any batter. Winning pitcher was Bryce Fanti for the Crusaders, who struck out 10 batters and walked none.

Marquette scored three runs in the first inning and tacked on another run in the sixth inning. Putnam County scored its only run in the fourth inning. Logan Kreiser, Nolan Whitney and Cam Colby accounted for the Panthers’ three hits, who ended their season with a record of 15-12 (5-7).

“We finished the season 10-4, so we definitely matured a team as the season went on,” said coach Christopher Newsome.

Lady Panthers lose 8-7 in regional final PRINCEVILLE— Putnam County lost 8-7 to Princeville in the championship game of the Princeville Class 1A regional May 22.

“I was very happy the team competed today and how we came ready to play,” said coach Chris Walker. “Alivia Resurreccion, who solidified her spot as our No. 1 pitcher, did very well keeping the Princeville batters off balance. You might not think giving up 10 hits is keeping them off balance, but that team can easily light up pitchers for 15-20 hits per game. They swing the bats with a purpose.”

Resurreccion struck out one batter, walked five and allowed six earned runs in seven innings.

Olivia Holmes had four RBIs including a three-run homer as she went 2-4. Paige Veronda, Skylar Grevengoed and Carleigh Wellenreiter all had two hits. PC scored four runs in the third, two in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Grevengoed scored PC’s last run in the seventh when she singled and moved to second when Holmes walked. Alicia Davis hit a hard ground ball to short that was bobbled at second.

“Our defense, except for a couple of mistakes played very well — especially Jordyn Friel,” he said. “She would much rather play another position but is willing to sacrifice her personal wants for the needs of the team. That says a lot about her as a player and a person.

“By playing together as long as these girls have, it’s natural to get locked into a position and want to stay there because you’re comfortable. She’s willing to go outside that comfort zone and do what is necessary.

Meals are available to senior citizens 60 plus at no cost, but donations are appreciated. The meal program is partly funded by donations, so they have a suggested donation of $5 per meal. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.

American Legion Scholarship presented to Cassandra Copeland GRANVILLE — On April 13, Ron Bluemer, the Americanism Officer of the Granville American Legion Post 180, notified Cassandra Copeland, daughter of Rollen and Robin Copeland of Granville, she would be this year’s recipient of the Post 180 Veteran’s Scholarship for 2017.

A vote was taken at the post’s monthly meeting on April 11. The Putnam County High School senior was unanimously chosen to receive the $1,000 scholarship. A check for the scholarship will be sent to the college’s financial aids department. Copeland will be able to use the award for tuition and fees and other college expenses.

There are a number of qualifications and achievement standards that are evaluated by the post members in the selection process. One of the essential factors of the program is that the applicant must be related to a member of the armed forces. In Copeland’s case, the relationship was to her brother, Army Pfc. R.J. Copeland, who has been serving in the United States Army since 2015. He is currently serving in South Korea.

In addition to the essential military connection, she demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and is a member of the National Honor Society at the high school. She was very active in athletics. During her senior year, she was chosen to be the captain of the cheerleader squad and the volleyball team. She was elected every year in high school to a position as a class officer.

As a member of the Rotary’s Interact Club, she served as secretary during her sophomore and junior years and is currently the vice president of the organization.

The Rotarians selected her to attend their leadership camp. Copeland received the Rotary Youth Leadership Award.

She also was a member of the chorus and Journalism Club, and she participated in the high school theatrical productions every year.

Seniors at the high school are required to have a minimum of 24 hours of community services to graduate. Copeland has already recorded 63 hours and had set a personal goal of 100 hours of voluntary service before graduation in May. Some of these

At that time, Bluemer outlined the requirements of the award and introduced Miss Copeland to the audience as the recipient.

Parishes celebrate Fatima 100th anniversary

The parishioners of St. Patricks in Hennepin and Sacred Heart in Granville recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first apparitions at Fatima. The celebration started with all night adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from Friday evening until Saturday morning, followed by celebration of the Holy Mass at 8 a.m. At the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, dozens of parishioners completed their 33 Days to Morning Glory Marian Retreat by consecrating themselves to Jesus through Mary. Following the 4 p.m. Mass, parishioners from both St. Pat’s and Sacred Heart held a Marian candle procession through the streets of Granville. During the procession, Marian hymns were sung, and Father Pat Demuelemeester led all in recitation of the Rosary.

CHILLICOTHE

Annual Summer Sizzle Shoot announced CHILLICOTHE — Marshall-Putnam 4-H Shooting Sports will hos the fifth annual Summer Sizzle Shoot in partnership with the Chillicothe Sportsmen’s Club on Saturday, June 3. The event will include air rifle,

archery, shotgun and .22 rifle. There are three age groups/divisions for the events. All 4-H members who are enrolled in 4-H Shooting Sports in the state of Illinois for the current 4-H year are eligible to participate. This

is an opportunity for 4-H members to test their skills against statewide participants. The public is welcome to come out and watch. There is no charge to watch the event. There will be food for purchase on site.

Come to the track to enjoy music and games. Special raffles and food will be available from many teams throughout the night. There will also be a large silent auction filled with great items available to bid on. Local children can get involved at Relay with youth activities.

The silent auction opens at 4:30 p.m. and will stay open until 7 p.m. At 5 p.m., the survivor dinner will begin as well as activities for local youth.

Welcome ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. with team introductions, and at 6:30 p.m. Darrel Crook will serve as this year’s honorary survivor. Come listen

as Darrel relates his cancer journey and leads the survivor lap at this year’s event.

This year Relay will play host to a new attraction. A live pie auction will take place at 7 p.m. Twenty pies will be auctioned off at that time. Handmade commemorative pie plates will only come with 10 pies, so make sure to get yours.

The evening will be capped off with the luminaria ceremony starting at 9 p.m. Luminaries will be available for purchase throughout the event.

Stop at the track at Henry High School for dinner and entertainment as Relayers work to create more birthdays on June 10 and help raise money to fight cancer.

Junior high and high school students take part in Fine Arts Festival GRANVILLE — A Fine Arts Festival was held for the junior high and high school on May 5 at the high school.

Woodcarving classes in Henry announced HENRY — For anyone who has ever had an interest in the art of woodcarving, an opportunity to learn more will be available June 16-18 and June 23-25 in the Henry-Senachwine High School industrial arts room. Times will be 5 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Donations were given in memory of Norm Crook, an accomplished

wood carver with the goal of continuing the art of wood carving.

Gene Everett will be instructing the six classes on carving a bluebill duck at the cost of $85.

Each student will receive all materials needed to construct and paint a working class Bluebill duck. In addition they will receive a Warren Knife/blades, Kevlar carving glove, half-round rasp and a vice pedestal.

The class is limited up to eight students, first-come, first-served, ages 18 and above.
