7 communities in Putnam, Bureau, LaSalle counties receive state grant money for sewer planning

Funds will assist with inadequate or nonexistent wastewater collection, treatment systems Roughly $195,000 of state grant money will be going to communities in Putnam, Bureau and LaSalle counties to assist them with inadequate or nonexistent wastewater collection and treatment systems.

In total, the Illinois EPA is awarding $1 million in funding.

In Putnam County, Standard will receive $30,000 and Magnolia $20,000.

In Bureau County, Cherry will receive $30,000, while in LaSalle County, Streator, Leland and Rutland will receive $30,000, while Ransom is expected to receive $25,000.

The Unsewered Communities Planning Grant Program will assist small and disadvantaged communities to develop project plans that identify solutions to wastewater collection and treatment needs, the Illinois EPA said in a press release. The program is made possible through the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, the first in nearly a decade.

Illinois has more than 200 “unsewered” communities that lack wastewater collection and/or treatment systems, the Illinois EPA said. Many of these communities have patchwork systems or decades-old underground “wildcat” pipes that illegally discharge to surface waters.

While a lack of planning capacity is often a significant initial barrier for these communities, the biggest hurdle remains the lack of local revenue to invest in the construction and long-

The Unsewered Communities Planning Grant Program provides communities an opportunity to obtain funding to develop a project plan that will address problems with the collection and treatment of wastewater.

may also be used to apply for a grant from the Unsewered Communities Construction Grant Program, which was also announced by Illinois EPA in September 2020. Over the next five years, Illinois EPA is making $100 million available through the Rebuild Illinois Capital Plan for construction of wastewater collection and/or treatment facilities.

The oil traveled into the channel on

the Illinois River.

Illinois State Police discovered the spill Saturday morning.

It’s an ongoing hazardous material cleanup, and for the safety of the public, Barto Landing will be closed until further notice — which may encompass the entire weekend — said the Bureau County Emergency Manage-

ment Agency.

Spring Valley Fire Department requested assistance from Bureau County EMA, Spring Valley Police, Illinois State Police, Illinois Department of Natural Resource, Illinois EPA, MABAS 25 and 39 Hazmat teams, U.S. Coast Guard and Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

Putnam County Library District announces June activities

The Putnam County Library District has announced its June programs

• Reading Colors Your World Summer Baskets — Four baskets will be available. Add your name each time you visit the library for the month of June. We will announce the winners on Thursday, July 1.

• Thursday, June 3 — COVID-related scams.

Iwona Przonak Garcia, community outreach liaison, will discuss COVID-related scams for the public via Zoom. The link will be on the website and Facebook.

• Thursday, June 10 — Bad art craft will be painted terracotta pots. This grab-and-go craft art program will be available all day for all audiences. This event is held on select Thursdays. Rotten eggs are not included.

• Sunday, June 13 — Wild Boar to Baconfest: Pigs in History and Popular Culture will be presented at 1 p.m. via Zoom. The link will be on the website and Facebook. Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Cynthia Clampitt will be presenting this program. Pigs were the first food animals to be domesticated, so they have a history with humans that goes back more than 12,000 years. Antiquity is only one of the reasons, however, that pork is the most commonly eaten meat in the world. This odd, contradictory animal offers a great range of advantages when it comes to feeding large populations, especially urban populations, though historically, it has also offered several disadvantages. Once pigs were introduced to the Americas, they became an almost instant success, raised by settlers but also valued by Native Americans. Pigs offer culinary delight and potential medical advances, but also create some challenges. So the topic of pigs is as far-ranging as the pigs themselves.

The Board of River Valley Players announced a $500 scholarship has been awarded to Lauren Frawley.

Through the hard work of the board and the support of the community, funds were available to present this scholarship for 2021.

Frawley is the daughter of Rose and Mike Frawley and a graduate of Henry-Senachwine High School. She plans to attend Illinois Valley Community College, majoring in math and minoring in music. She has appeared in shows and worked on tech crew and

River Valley Players, established in 1977, offers a $500 scholarships to young people who have taken part in our productions not only on-stage, but also working on set construction, costume committee, technical crew, production crew, and the orchestra. It has proven to be an enriching experience

for young people to work with outstanding directors and take a backstage look at what goes on to put a community theatre stage production together. The RVP thanked the Estate of Fr. Walter Breuning for its generous gift to the scholarship fund.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore hosts ribbon cutting

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 1011 Shooting Park Road, in Peru, hosts its ribbon cutting Thursday afternoon as organizers prepared for their Saturday grand opening.

The store will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The 28,000 square foot facility offers visitors the option of new and used furniture, home supplies, lawn care needs and a variety of other building materials.

“This is a home improvement ReStore so all the profits that we get from this store we will be able to fund our other Habitat builds repairs and community projects,” said Executive Director Sally Van Cura. “Habitat International was helpful. They wanted to see this here and with a great board of directors we worked really hard to get this going.”

The ribbon cutting was conducted by the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and was attended by Van Cura, Habitat for Humanity of La Salle, Bureau and Putnam Counties Board President Dan Fitzgerald and other community leaders from the area.

Performances will be at Centennial Park in Peru LASALLE — Stage 212 makes its return with a unique outdoor production of “Spoon River Anthology.”

Adapted by Charles Aidman from the 1915 literary work by Edgar Lee Masters, “Spoon River Anthology” is a collection of poems written from the points of view of deceased citizens of a fictional small town named for a river near Masters’ hometown of Lewistown. It aims to demystify rural and small-town American life, and despite its inclusion of grim accounts of murder, arson, blackmail and infidelity, Spoon River is a feel-good show that encourages audiences to gather their rosebuds (or daisies) while they may.

‘Seeds to Harvest’ garden program begins in Toluca

The air was cool April 19, but for the Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners and the M-P 4-H Youth Development Coordinator it was heartwarming to see the enthusiasm that the third graders at Fieldcrest Intermediate School in Toluca had as they began the “Seeds to Harvest” garden program this year.

The students enjoyed getting their hands dirty in the soil. “I don’t think anyone noticed how cool it was. The third graders’ knowledge of gardening, fruits and vegetables was amazing,” said Master Gardener Sharon Gallop. They each took turns leveling the garden beds, planting and labeling the plants and seeds. They all helped put down the weed barrier.”

“Our radish and beet rows may be a little wider than we planned, but I believe they will realize the satisfaction of watching plants pop up from the soil (not dirt),” said Master Gardener Laura Ekern.

Even the remote learners came out on the teacher’s laptop to be a part of

the gardens.

“I really enjoy seeing the students absorb new knowledge, and they ask really good questions,” said Master Gardener Amy Moore-McKee. “This is so much fun!” Master Gardener Barb Dahlbach said. “If I heard that once, I heard it 25 times.”

The Master Gardeners don’t just teach how to plant, they teach about the layers of soil (not dirt), different parts of the plant, what part of the plant they eat and much more. On the last day of the program, the students will be able to harvest some of their produce.

The amazing thing about the Fieldcrest Intermediate School’s garden is, after the harvest they replant it as a community garden. Members of the community help weed, water and harvest the garden throughout the summer.

“If we get one student involved in gardening for a lifetime, that is the reward,” Gallop said.

Collecting and testing dead birds is an important component of the West Nile Virus (WNV) surveillance program.

West Nile Virus generally appears in birds and mosquitoes before it is transmitted to humans; therefore, monitoring bird populations helps to predict when and where humans will be at higher risk for West Nile Virus infections.

The Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Departments are now accepting dead birds for testing of WNV. The public is encouraged to help locate birds that may have died from the disease. Sick birds or birds that have been dead less than 12 hours may be eligible for testing. To qualify for testing, birds must meet these guidelines: • Birds must be dead less than 12 hours (fresh) and the carcass must not have obvious signs of trauma (struck by a vehicle, window or animal attack), decay or strong odor. Birds dying from WNV are usually found singly, scattered over a wide area. In contrast, birds that die from other causes (storm mortality, food poisoning, toxicants)

often die in groups or clusters.

• Eligible birds include: Crows, blue jays, house finches, house sparrows, robins; Perching birds such as blackbirds, bluebirds, catbirds, cardinals, goldfinches, finches, swallows, wrens; hawks and owls.

• Ineligible birds include: Waterfowl, gulls, vultures, turkeys, chickens or eagles.

• Only adults should handle dead birds. Pick the bird up with gloves, tongs or a shovel. If you do not have gloves, insert your hand into a plastic bag like it is a glove, grasp the bird carefully and invert the bag over the bird. Each bird should be double-bagged in clear plastic bags.

The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments urge the public to take precautions to protect you and your family from mosquito bites. Outbreaks of West Nile Virus (WNV) occur each summer in the U.S., warmer temperatures mean more mosquitoes. Take these common precautions to minimize mosquito bites this summer: • Avoid being outdoors at dusk/ night and early morning, when winds

are light and mosquitoes are active.

• When outdoors during these times wear light-colored clothing and apply insect repellent.

• Ensure that doors and windows have tight, properly fitting screens.

• Eliminate all sources of standing water that support mosquito breeding (i.e. bird baths, wading pools, flowerpots, tires, cans, buckets, clogged gutters, abandoned swimming pools, etc.) on your property. This is especially important because large numbers of mosquitoes that carry WNV can emerge from even one shallow containers of stagnant water.

National Safe Boating Week kicks off this week National Safe Boating Week started Saturday, May 22, and runs through Friday, May 28.

Endorsed by the U.S. Coast Guard and promoted throughout the U.S., the theme in the annual message stays the same, “please boat safely.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971.

Throughout National Safe Boating Week, the Great Lakes Coast Guard will highlight key safety tips learned from previous years starting with always wearing your life jacket.

As an integral part of recreational boating safety, the Coast Guard recommends all boaters not only have properly sized and fitted life jackets for every person aboard their vessels as required by law, but also ensure everyone aboard is wearing their life jacket at all times.

Safe boating starts before you go on the water. The Coast Guard recommends always filing a float plan before departing and leaving it with a reliable source. This information; including name, boat type and identification, route, and expected return time can be extremely useful in locating missing and overdue boaters. Personal Locator Beacons can be purchased and kept in your vessel or on your per-

son if you are going on the water.

These devices are specifically registered to the owner and send a satellite signal to rescue agencies for quick response time when a boater is in distress.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to significant increase in boating activity in 2020. Boat sales reached recent record highs, with first-time boat buyers making up a large percentage than that at any time in the past 10 years.

Record boat activity and sales, first-time boat owners, and difficulty in receiving in-person education combined to increase the number of accidents, injuries and deaths. The number of deaths in 2020 exceeded 2019 by 24% and the deaths in June, July and August of 2020 were the highest in 23 years. The most recent statistics show that 79% of boating fatalities on the nation’s waterways were drownings, and 86% of those victims were not wearing life jackets.

This year, wearing an engine cut off switch link became a requirement while operating certain recreational vessels. Each year, nearly 75 people die and 400 more are injured when they are struck by a propeller or a vessel. Especially for first time paddle craft owners who may be unaware, the Coast Guard strongly urges you to

label your gear. This includes vessels, oars and life jackets.

Each year, the Coast Guard responds to unmanned vessels, oars and even pool floats that have drifted away from their proper storage location. You can save responders time and resources by labeling your gear

with name and contact information.

Tony’s Butt Shack serves delicious smoked meats I’ve had Tony’s Butt Shack BBQ & Catering at graduation parties, and it was delicious.

So when a friend raved about the restaurant’s Thursday taco special – 10 tacos for $15 – I knew I had to try it.

I mean, smoked meat inside tacos, it has to be tasty, right? It was. We ordered a variety of tacos – Nashville hot, brisket, pulled chicken and pulled pork.

While the brisket, pulled chicken and pulled pork tacos were fairly traditional, appealing tacos with a fried shell, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and salsa, the Nashville hot stood out.

It’s made with pulled pork, hot sauce, coleslaw and pickles.

Some in our group felt the Nashville hot taco was too spicy and some thought it wasn’t spicy enough, and I’m sure, like Goldilocks, some people find it to be just right.

No matter the spice preference, everyone in our group felt the smokiness from the meat, the spice from the sauce, the sweetness of the coleslaw and the acidity from the pickles was an excellent flavor combination.

Tony’s also has a wide variety of appetizers using its smoked meats as well.

After much discussion, we picked the Brisket Totchos ($8.99), which are tator tots topped with Texas brisket, homemade cheese sauce, bacon, sour cream and chives.

We had our order delivered, and this appetizer traveled surprisingly well. We all agreed the tots – and likely the tacos – would be even better when eaten while dining in.

For barbecue traditionalists, Tony’s offers varied combos that come with smoked meats (pulled pork, pulled chicken, smoked ham, brisket, shaved pork loin, ribs, Polish sausage) and sides.

And for you non-barbecue lovers – I don’t really get that, but I don’t judge – Tony’s has plenty of salads, fried

We ordered Tony’s Signature Burger ($10.74), and, unexpectedly at a barbecue joint, it was one of the biggest hits of the night. The burger was on a ciabatta bun and topped with bourbon glaze, American cheese and a homemade bacon jam, which cre-

ated an incredible sweet and savory flavor.

Like the appetizers, it was difficult to pick which burger to order among many mouth-watering options.

It wouldn’t be a barbecue place without a long list of sides to choose from, and Tony’s didn’t disappoint here either.

We went with fried potato salad, mac and cheese, fries, hickory smoked beans and Brunswick stew.

The fried potato salad is an unusual option that’s hard to find and done well here.

Overall, Tony’s provides an enjoyable dining experience with good food for a reasonable price. I look forward

to eventually dining in to experience more of what the restaurant has to offer.
