First COVID-19 case reported in Putnam County
Female in late teens is recovering at home The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments reported May 15 that the first resident of Putnam County has tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Public health officials were notified of a positive test, according to state and local public health protocol. The individual is a female in her late teens. The individual is recovering in isolation at home at this time. Public health officials are in the beginning stages of the investigation
and are working to identify individuals who were in contact with the case. Federal privacy restrictions prohibit the release of any additional information regarding this case. No further information regarding the investigation is available at this time. As of May 15, there were 21 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the counties served by the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments. Bureau County has had 15 confirmed cases. Marshall County has had five confirmed cases. Putnam County has one confirmed case. The first case was reported in Marshall County on March 23; there has been one COVID-19 related death in Bureau County.

Car-side tests done by appointment only BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media HENNEPIN — COVID-19 testing for Bureau, Putnam and Marshall counties has drawn about two dozen people to the health department so far.
Hector Gomez, director of the health department, reported to Putnam County Board members at last week’s meeting that 25 people have been served through the drive-through testing. “All the tests so far have been negative,” Gome z said. “But

there were two new cases that have been diagnosed in that time.” Gomez said one of the positive tests came from a man that works in the Chicago suburbs and so far it is believed the virus hasn’t extended deep into the counties served by the health department. Gomez, in response to an inquiry by board member Charlie Lenkaitis, said to date, no one who has tested through the health department has returned for a retest.
Testing began at the Princeton office, 526 S. Bureau Valley Parkway during the week of May 4. Testing is set for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Priority for 10-15 tests per day at the Princeton drivethrough will be given to Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County residents. Testing will conducted car-side and will be by appointment only. Residents are asked to call 815872-5091 to be screened by a public health nurse.

The event in Indiana is projecting 100,000 people showing up, he said. “It’s a tremendous squandered opportunity for Peru,” he said. “It’s just sad.” Deckert owns an Avenger, which has been based in Peru for years. The event attracts people from all over the country and is “an incredible salute to our veterans,” said Chuck Studer, manager of Illinois Valley Regional Airport and owner of Midwest Avtech. This year would have been the fifth year in Peru. “This year would have been much bigger than any events before or probably any event held in the Illinois Valley area,” Studer said. “We’re disappointed we’re losing it,” he said. “It’s unfortunate we’re in the situ-

The popular TBM Avenger event in Peru is moving to Indiana due to “the governor’s continued guidelines,” a founder of the event said. “Because of the governor’s continued guidelines, we don’t believe Illinois will be opened up in time,” said Brad Deckert of Eureka, founder of the event. The event has brought in dozens of military aircraft, fliers from throughout the U.S. and Midwest and almost 10 historic Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers to Illinois Valley Regional Airport each spring. First, organizers postponed the May event to sometime later this year in Peru. But recently, organizers decided to move the event to the last weekend of July in Terre Haute, Ind. Indiana is planning to be unrestricted by July 4, Deckert said. Does he see this as a permanent move? “We’ll see how it plays out. We hope not,” he said. The event is a unique one that showcases pieces of history and promotes education. The event also allows those who own an Avenger to get together and discuss challenges to keeping them in the air. “Mostly it’s to share them with the public,” he said.

BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media HENNEPIN — Putnam County Treasurer Kevin Kunkel says April “wasn’t a bad month.” The county has made significant fiscal cuts in the recent year, knocking about $1 million off the budget, and as COVID-19 pandemic rages on, they’re preparing for a loss in revenue due to lower sales tax and other revenue. Kunkel reported $168,500 in revenue for April to the Putnam County Board, but cautioned board members that May’s numbers might not look so rosy. “Sales tax will be lower by a few thousand as we start to see reduced sales,” he said. The county borrowed $25,000 from the bridge fund, he reported.

Tax bills however, were to be mailed Wednesday and Thursday, so the county will start seeing some income with those payments. Kunkel said payments can be made online, by mail or dropped off at the courthouse drop box or the banks. Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle reminds residents that the county courthouse is open for essential business by appointment. Offices can be accessed through the north entrance next to the Sheriff ’s Department.

ST. CHARLES — Albert Joseph Lenkaitis Sr., age 75, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2020, at his home in St. Charles, IL. A life-long agricultural enthusiast, he was born August 26, 1944, in Spring Valley, IL and raised in nearby Granville on his family’s dairy farm. He met his true love, Mary Etta (Capitani) on February 10, 1961, when the two were set-up on a date for a school dance. They were married on June 24, 1967, and enjoyed 53 years together. They have four children and 11 grandchildren. Albert graduated from the University of Illinois on June 1, 1966, with a degree in ag economics and dairy science. He briefly worked in construction before beginning a job at a grain elevator. There, he was given a chance to work for the company as a trader at the Chicago Board of Trade – a job that flourished into a 53-year career. He
abruptly left March 17, 2020, when he was unable to continue due to his lung cancer diagnosis. His escape from the hustle and bustle of working in the city was the family’s dairy farm. Albert and Mary Etta purchased the farm in 1983 as it was located next to their home in St. Charles, IL. The couple wanted to seize the opportunity to reconnect to the industry and the lifestyle. Although the landscape around them has changed with urban sprawl, the couple has been steadfast in making the farm sustainable for future generations of the family to enjoy. Most recently, they built a new dairy barn outfitted with technology including robotic milkers. While this dairy farmer rarely milked a cow, he drove tractors every evening after work and on weekends. If he wasn’t in a tractor, you would likely find him in the farm shop. There, he would work on anything that needed fixing
and could tell you the location of every tool and part in the crammed cabinets and shelves. At any Kane County 4-H, Illinois Holstein Association or National Red and White Dairy Cattle Association event, you could count on your conversation with him to include the latest news on the agricultural commodity markets or a funny joke. You could also count on him to have a pipe, cup of coffee or both in-hand. The people closest to him will remember him for his witty banter. Albert was known to ask challenging questions and put forward challenging ideas. Although frustrating in the moment, it always resulted in his unwavering support — if you were willing to put in the work. Many can attest to how the unconventional approach pushed them to go further, reshaped their ideas and enriched their lives. These stories from friends and family are an important part of

his legacy and some of his proudest moments. Albert is survived by his son Albert, Jr. (Rhonda) and their children, Briley, AJ, Caden and Denver; daughter, Elizabeth (James) and their children, JT, Katelyn and Ella; daughter, Victoria (Ryan) and their children Ethan, Isabel and Marshall; and son, Andrew (Sarah) and their son, Lucas. Private services were held May 14, 2020, at Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles. A celebration of life memorial will be scheduled later in the year as conditions allow. Every Kane County Fair, Albert would be ringside watching his children (and more recently grandchildren) showing their favorite animals. He believed in the impact of youth agricultural programs and served as the Dairy Superintendent and on the Blue Ribbon Sale committee. Therefore, in lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider honoring Albert’s memory with a donation to the Kane County 4-H Foundation, 535 S. Randall Road, Ste A, St. Charles, IL 60174.

Wenona man killed in crash on Route 18

A 38-year-old Wenona man died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash at 6:24 a.m. Thursday on Route 18 at Meridian Road at the Putnam-LaSalle county line, state police said. The motorist, whose name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima that collided with a 2017 Ford F350 driven by James D. Toliver, 37, of Chillicothe, who was not injured, police said. Police said a preliminary investigation showed the Altima was northbound on Meridian Road, and Toliver’s truck was eastbound on Route 18. The Altima entered the intersection, police said, and Toliver’s front end struck the driver’s side of the Altima. The crash remains under investigation.

The Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office will be taking a zero-tolerance approach. Whether day or night, unbuckled motorists will be ticketed and impaired drivers arrested. BIRTHS ANNOUNCED Logan and Allison (Kreider) Dennis of Hennepin are the parents of a son born April 23 at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.
HENRY — The Henry-Senachwine National Honor Society high school students wrote 70 letters to patients and residents at Heartland Health Care Center of Henry for them to be handed out in time for Easter weekend. Some of these letters included hand-made bracelets, cards, photos and some even included addresses in case the recipient wanted to write the student back. Brady Neuhalfen, who is a member of the HSHS NHS, approached Heartland that the NHS students would like to do something to brighten the day for people staying with them at Heartland. The students had come up with a plan to write letters to everyone at the facility. A few days later, Brady delivered the 70 handwritten letters. These letters lifted spirits and came at a perfect time. Normally Easter is a big family time with lots of visitors from near and far and there is quite a festive atmosphere. These letters created such a happy and positive buzz that could be felt through the entire facility.

HENRY — Due to the COVID-19 virus, Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR is canceling its meeting scheduled for Friday, June 5. The chapter originally planned to rededicate the grave and marker of Elizabeth Wikoff at the Henry Cemetery. Wikoff is the daughter of Revolutionary War soldier John Bainbridge, who served in the New Jersey militia. Illinois DAR state guests were anticipated. Plans are now being made to hold the rededication at the chapter’s regularly scheduled September meeting.

Crystal Credi wins Skertson distinguished service award
OGLESBY — Crystal Credi of Peru is the 2020 winner of Illinois Valley Community College’s Connie Skerston Memorial Award for Support Staff Distinguished Service. Credi, administrative assistant in Student Services, was nominated by IVCC President Jerry Corcoran. “Crystal shows up every day with a smile on her face and a commitment to service excellence in her heart. She enjoys being around people and no matter what anyone asks her to look into, she’s always happy to oblige,” said Corcoran. Credi helps coordinate major Student Services events such as the academic banquet and commencement. A full-time employee since 2017, she started part-time in 2013. “Crystal is a team player who arrives early so she can begin helping people change their lives,” Corcoran said. Credi provides information to
students via podcasts available on IVCC’s website at https://soundcloud.com/user-857114290. Among 20 podcasts, she has covered tips for de-stressing, career services, financial aid, scholarships and more. She earned her bachelor’s from Illinois State University in May 2019 and is now pursuing a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Lewis University. She graduated summa cum laude from IVCC in 2016 with AA and AS degrees. “With her grit, determination and degree in hand, there’s no doubt Crystal is well positioned to eventually move into a key leadership position,” Corcoran said. Other finalists for the award — named in memory of former assistant director of admissions and records Connie Skerston who died in 2015 — were cashier Jill Hejl and Continuing Education administrative assistant Bonnie Jasiek.
