Saying he noticed the new wood of the deck while driving past the property, Burger then inspected the structure and determined it doesn’t meet any of the requirements of local zoning ordinances.

Board member Duane Calbow asked the family if they had looked into local zoning codes or followed any of the required procedures for new construction prior to the installation of the structure, and they admitted they hadn’t because they assumed there weren’t any.

Board chairman Steve Malavolti told the family a decision wouldn’t be made until the following meeting, since the issue wasn’t on the agenda. He added, however, the county would likely have to consider adding or altering ordinances because of the increasing popularity of small structures and said many municipalities are having to do the same.

Several area toddlers like Luke Vaessen visited the petting zoo held behind the Hennepin Library on the evening of May 11. There they met a sheep, kid, piglet, rabbit, duck and chickens. The program was presented by Bethany Harrison, a self-sustaining farmer from Henry.

County highway engineer Pat Sloan said the work to widen Power Plant Road had been completed, and paving would soon begin.

The county will be receiving $65,000 from the state to help pay for the first phase of engineering design work on the Bottom Road project. Sloan also said he sent engineers a video of the flood waters flowing around the bridge, so they could use it to aid in their design work.

coordinator Bob Cofoid reported some flooding in different areas throughout the county but said it wasn’t as bad as had been predicted.

Sloan also presented information about the recent electronics collection event held in Toluca.

He said there was about two-thirds of what they had collected during the previous collection last fall and estimated about 25 to 30 percent of the 200 vehicles at the event were from Putnam County.

B-P Enterprise Zone resolution The board tabled the decision to vote on the B-P Enterprise resolution while the language is clarified. Questions remain about how the abatement resolution and extension is worded and the possible legal liability it could pose to the county.

Audit review Kim Bird of Arch Hopkins & Associates presented a review of the county’s yearly audit. She said the county benefited from having no debt and strong cash reserves. She also said it would be prudent for the county to address recent deficit spending now because the current financial condition of the state is unlikely to improve.

She added while cutting expenses is difficult, she expected it would be even more difficult in the future to increase revenue.

In other board news: • The board approved Joseph Ellena to be reappointed as a trustee of the Standard Fire Protection District.

• The board also approved the appointment of Kathy Carr to the Magnolia Cemetery Board.

• The board approved the ordinance ascertaining the prevailing wage rates for the county.

The Lincolns visit PCJH

Max and Donna Daniels visited Putnam County Junior High as President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln on May 11 as part of the annual seventh-grade Civil War Amazing Race which spans three days. The Lincolns stepped out of the past to share their knowledge with the students and “President Lincoln” also read The Gettysburg Address during the presentation.

Community Partners Against Substance Abuse (CPASA) has been developing and presenting strategies for substance abuse prevention in Bureau and Putnam counties since 2009. Some of those strategies have changed over recent years as the area, along with the rest of the country, has become aware of the risks of some prescription drugs and heroin.

Among those changes have been an increased awareness of the link between substance use disorders like addiction and other mental health issues including depression, suicide and behavioral health disorders.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on its web page MentalHealth.gov explains the relationship this way: “Mental health problems and substance use disorders sometimes occur together. This is because: • Certain illegal drugs can cause people with an addiction to experience one or more symptoms of a mental health problem.

• Mental health problems can sometimes lead to alcohol or drug use, as some people with a men-

tal health problem may misuse these substances as a form of self-medication • Mental and substance use disorders share some underlying causes, including changes in brain composition, genetic vulnerabilities and early exposure to stress or trauma • More than one in four adults living with serious mental health problems also has a substance use problem.

In 2015, CPASA learned from Bureau County Coroner Janice Wamhoff there had been eight heroin-related deaths in the first nine months of that year. CPASA called a town hall meeting in response to that information and as a result, a multi-pronged approach to the specific issues of prescription drugs and heroin was undertaken.

Partners in that effort included medical and mental health professionals, the faith-based community, law enforcement and others. It became clear early on in that push that harm reduction needed to be an important goal of their efforts both on its own and as part of the overall prevention strategy.

As this group began attempting to deal with persons facing substance use disorder and related problems, it also became clear there was a lack of information about available local mental health services in general and how to access them. This problem went beyond persons with current substance use disorders and impacted many other mental health issues.

Dawn Conerton, CPASA coordinator, explained what happened next.

“We felt we needed to find a way to get information about available local mental health services, including but not limited to substance use services, into the hands of people who needed it in a non-stigmatizing way,” she said. “As we talked we also realized there may be many more people that could benefit from this information than we originally may have thought because many people may need to look for resources for themselves, a family member or a friend with concerns that have little or nothing to do with substances.

How they spent their spring break Sandy Creek Lane hosts open house

Students return from learning experience in Costa Rica

BY GOLDIE RAPP news@putnamcountyrecord.com PERU — The St. Bede Academy Spanish class recently returned from their week long trip to Costa Rica.

During their spring break, the students experienced an Immersion Tour specifically designed to help students with their listening and communication skills through a combination of cultural experiences and interactive lessons.

Upon returning from their excursion, the students were full of stories about the new adventures they experienced while there. They talked about the authentic foods, the views of volcanoes and the politeness of people they met along the way.

One thing about the country that impressed students the most was the level of sustainability practiced in the small country. The students were surprised by things such as the little amount of electricity

The students also talked about being nervous upon arrival and having to put their Spanish speaking skills to the test.

They said being in an uncomfortable situation forced them to communicate quicker, and they believe it improved their Spanish along the way.

WENONA — Sandy Creek Lane sow farm in Marshall County welcomed the community to an open house on April 26. The farm, which consists of three barns, sits on five acres of land northwest of Wenona and will be home to 5,600 sows. Once the farm is in full swing, it will provide for 21 fulltime employees.

The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA), along with the Illinois Livestock Development Group (ILDG), helped coordinate the event, which included free pork chop sandwiches for visitors. More than 500 guests attended the event and toured the farm.

Employees of VMC Management set up 10 stations throughout the farm to explain each location in the barn and provide a thorough tour. Signs at each stop gave pictures to help visualize what it will look like with pigs inside.

The tour took place before pigs are in the barns, to allow ample time for a deep clean before they arrive next month.

This sow farm has many innovative technologies to increase security and comfort for the pigs. For instance, manure produced by the pigs is collected and controlled under the pig barns in 8- to 10-foot deep concrete pits.

These pits are reinforced with steel and allow zero discharge. The manure is then tested for its nutrient value and applied on local farmland to provide organic fertilizer for crops such as corn and soybeans. In using precision ag technology, manure is incorporated directly under the soil in the spring and fall.

CARMELLA ‘MILLY’ ARENA GRANVILLE — Carmella “Milly” Arena, 81, of Granville peacefully drifted off to sleep surrounded by her loving family after a very long illness on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at her residence. She was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis which robbed her of her ability to speak and eventually her mobility.

She had lived with her daughter, Linda, and son-in-law, Tom, since 2008.

Milly was born in Chicago on Feb. 26, 1936, to Frank and Carmela Arena. She was the baby of the family and was welcomed by her brothers, Frank and Paul, and her sisters, Jennie and Josephine. The Arena children learned to speak English when they attended school as only Sicilian was spoken at home. She attended Austin High School. She also attended Illinois Valley Community College and obtained her real estate license. She worked many jobs throughout her life including Brach Candy, Motorola, Illinois Bell and Coldwell Banker. With over 30 years working on the Illinois River at Consolidated Grain and Barge, Wolfe Marine Services and ADM Grain, she retired in 2001.

She married Richard Corcoran in 1954 and they had four children. They moved from Chicago to Granville in 1968. She enjoyed performing with the Sweet Adelines with her daughters. The family spent many summers at Lake Wildwood, where they were one of the first members. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in LaSalle and was active in the Cursillo Community.

Last year, her 80th birthday was celebrated by family and friends, her caregivers, including Cindy Golden and Elizabeth Koester, and her hospice team that all loved her so much.

She will be missed by her children, Rick and Brenda Corcoran of Peru, Kathi and Harold “Red” Bly of Peru, Linda and Tom Smith of Granville, and Diana and David Williams of Woodland Hills, Calif.; her grandchildren, Jayme Corcoran and Jeff Rietgraf of LaSalle, Laura Zeman and Max Marx of Peru, Andrea and Sean Brannon of Granville, Crystal and Mike Credi of Peru, Michelle and Joe Hansen of Princeton, Eric Lopez of Ottawa, Amy and Brandon Brucki of Marseilles, Jeff Lopez of Ottawa, and Jason Lopez and Emily Froemel of LaSalle; and her 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by the love of her life, Dave Vickaryous; her sister, Jennie Pacini of Elk Grove Village; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Paul and Frank; one sister, Josephine; two sons, Kevin and Joey; one nephew, Nick; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with Father John Crist officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

A return to nature

Volunteers sought for restoration event at Dixon Waterfowl Refuge

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — The majority of the vast Midwestern prairie is gone, replaced by miles and miles of corn and soybean fields or urban development.

Many habitat restoration projects, such as the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, work to help restore this vital habitat to plant and animal species suffering from this massive loss.

The Wetlands Initiative (TWI), founded in 1994, is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the wetlands of the Midwest to improve water quality; increase wildlife habitat and biodiversity; and reduce flood damage.

According to the its website, more than 90 percent of the wetlands present 200 years ago in Illinois are now drained, tiled, dammed or levied. With so many wetlands already lost, TWI focuses on restoring rather than simply preserving their remnants.

An upcoming opportunity sponsored

by TWI at the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge at Hennepin and Hopper Lakes on June 3 will provide volunteers an up-close view of a restoration in progress.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon, with all equipment and snacks provided by TWI. According to TWI’s development and communications assistant Julie Erdmann, there have been many volunteer events over the past 15 years at the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, but this will only be the second planting event held on the 283-acre Hickory Hollow tract recently added to the refuge.

PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF At 8:33 p.m. on May 11, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call from a residence on Route 26 in Magnolia Township reporting someone pinned under a fallen tree. Putnam County Emergency Medical Service and the fire departments of Magnolia, Hennepin and Henry responded to the scene.

The victim was identified as John W. Rott, 54. Rott was pronounced dead at the scene by the Putnam County death investigator.

It appeared as though Rott was clearing brush when a tree gave way on the hillside and fell onto Rott who was in an open cab tractor.

Hickory Hollow tract covered about 40 acres. This year’s plug planting will cover about 80 acres and will include the planting of more than 30 native prairie species,” Erdmann said.

The restoration of this area will create a contiguous, high-quality prairie, savanna and woodland system within the southeastern portion of the refuge.

When the land was first acquired it was corn and soybean fields. This year the early signs of a returning natural habitat are becoming more visible after TWI’s native planting efforts.

“To see the native seedlings we planted last year in bloom is very exciting. These include the Prairie Violets, Heart-leaf Golden Alexander and Shooting Star,” she said.

Those blooming wildflowers are an early sign of habitat restoration. Once the right plants are available to provide nectar and seeds, the other links in nature’s chain will begin to appear.

The Hickory Hollow tract is not yet open to the public, so the plug planting volunteer day is a rare opportunity for individuals to see and be part of an ongoing habitat restoration.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. by the observation tower, and they should wear appropriate clothing for fieldwork, such as long pants and closed-toe shoes. Hats, sunscreen and bug spray are also recommended. Children aged 16 or younger must be accompanied by a parent or chaperone.

To the Editor, When I was elected on Nov. 8, 2016, I knew I was walking into a political hotbed, but I didn’t fully realize how bad things actually were until I stepped foot in Springfield. The problems facing our state have been decades in the making.

For example, Illinois’ pension liability represents 10 percent of the entire nation’s pension debt; the overall tax burden for families and businesses is the fifth highest in the nation; and we have the 48th worst business climate in the country. These statistics aren’t the result of the last two or three years. They are the direct result of years upon years of failed policies and

false promises.

It’s important to know Michael Madigan and the Democrats have long been in control of the General Assembly and currently have a majority in the House and a supermajority in the Senate. Due to these majorities, the Democrats have complete control of the legislative process.

In the House, the majority party alone decides which bills are allowed to move through the legislative process through the powerful Rules Committee. And after that, it is up to the sole discretion of the speaker as to which bills are allowed to be called for a vote and when. I have seen this first hand with some of my bills.

The majority party didn’t like them, so they refused to call them for a vote. But don’t just take my word on it, last week, the House passed 179 pieces of legislation.

Of those, 133 bills were Democrat bills and only 46 were Republican bills.

This concentration of power in the legislature leads to a

much larger problem facing Illinois though, and that’s the budget stalemate.

A balanced budget is required in the state of Illinois by our constitution, and there are a number of steps that must be completed in order to make this happen. First, the legislature is required by law to pass a revenue estimate. Then the governor and the governor’s office of management and budget (GOMB) present their budgets.

The next step is for Senate and House Appropriations Committees to meet, hear testimony from state agencies, and determine the funding levels for those agencies based on the previously approved revenue estimate. Finally, the budget bills are filed, receive votes and move on to the governor’s desk to be signed.

If it’s really that simple, what’s the hold up? The fact is, the majority party in the legislature has failed to complete Step 1. As a reminder, the Illinois Constitution states in Arti-

Planting the seed M

y first attempt at a garden was disastrous. I was a kid, and I didn’t know what I was doing. I grabbed a handful of old pumpkin seeds, nudged up some dirt near my parent’s house and threw them down.

I stomped them into the dirt, and naively thought I had successfully planted my first garden. I didn’t know how deep I should plant the seeds, whether pumpkins needed shade or sun, how much water they required or even how much space it took to grow them. I just thought pumpkins would be a neat thing to grow, so I tried to wing it. I didn’t realize that growing produce was a lot harder than it looked.

As you can imagine, it didn’t work out so well. The pumpkins that sprouted that fall were misshapen, small and altogether unhealthy looking. I didn’t know it at the time, but it would be a long time before I attempted another garden.

It was decades later, when my son brought home a giant cabbage plant from school, that I finally toyed with the idea of planting another garden. I could only see the positives to it – the food would be fresher, tastier and cheaper than anything I would get in the stores.

And now that I was an adult, I was sure to be a lot better at the research I needed to do to have a thriving garden.

So I enlisted my husband’s help and asked him to build four long raised gardening beds in our backyard for my vegetables. That way I wouldn’t end up with an aching back when I needed to weed them.

It’s been about three years now since we first planted that garden, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

There have been a few mishaps along the way, such as when I was running out of room in one bed, so I didn’t space out the carrot seeds. I figured they would still be OK, and then I realized they weren’t growing much of anything underground.

That’s when my kids and I learned to take spacing requirements seriously.

My kids were fascinated the first year we grew anything. They had so much fun picking vegetables that they kept picking things even when they didn’t want to eat them.

My kids and I aren’t the only ones enjoying our little backyard garden. It has become really popular with their friends too. Some of their friends have told us they have never picked their own vegetables before. I suppose that’s a sign of the times, but I find that truly sad.

I remember the vegetable gardens my

dad used to grow when I was a kid. They weren’t anything big, just a small plot of land behind our house. But I used to love eating the vegetables that we could gather up just by taking a quick walk to the backyard.

I wanted that same experience for my kids, although it took that school project to bring those long-ago memories flooding back to me.

Unless they grow up on a farm, kids are often so removed from the food-growing process these days that I don’t think they realize how much work it is to grow your own food. They don’t get to experience the wonder of planting something so small and watching it sprout through the ground just days later.

That’s why when my kids’ friends come over; they are always welcome to pick and eat whatever they want from our garden. I want them to experience a little bit of that amazement. Every time a kid comes over and I point to a carrot and ask them to pull on that green stem without telling them what’s underneath, I love hearing/seeing their surprise when they realize they’ve just unearthed a carrot.

Without fail, it makes them laugh, and they immediately want to pick more.

But I love having our garden for a deeper reason than just the fun it gives my kids. Many of us live in a world of instant gratification. We get everything we want almost as soon as we realize we want it. I don’t want my kids taking their food sources for granted, or worse yet, not know how to garden someday when they may really need it.

If you have a child or a grandchild in your life, consider planting a small garden this year. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant. If you don’t want to do the heavy lifting a full-fledged garden requires, just get a few containers to put in your backyard or patio. A couple of plants will be enough to spark their interest. Someday, they may look back at that little garden as fondly as I do my dad’s. You might not just be growing produce, you may be planting memories.

For all the people I have come to know, and the ones that have expressed concerns about the future of our state, I can’t think of a better place to be able to help than fighting for them in Springfield. The opportunity to turn our state around and bring the certainty that families, businesses and future generations deserve is upon us. I hope that my colleagues recognize this opportunity and join me in making Illinois a national leader again and a state for which we can all be proud.

So instead of focusing on Step 1, the majority party has decided to focus on passing bills totaling $295 million last week alone without identifying how we’re going to pay for it. This has to stop.

My Republican colleagues and I stand ready and willing to negotiate on a balanced budget that will lead to economic growth in all corners of the state. But we can’t negotiate alone. In a divided government we all have to come together and compromise for the people we represent.

I remain optimistic about our future because I believe the people of the 76th District, as well as the people of Illinois, know that we can’t keep doing

We need a new major political party

alking politics over coffee with a former student this past week, the two of us came up with the same thought: We need a new major political party.

Dauntingly difficult, but not impossible.

The Democratic Party is adrift, at best. Its base of African-Americans, government unions and a thin sliver of intellectual liberals doesn’t add up to enough to win national elections.

On the other side, there hasn’t been a place in the GOP for old Eisenhower Republicans like me, who believe in public works, public education and public universities, for many years.

The free-trading, budget-balancing Establishment GOPers have been thrown over by small government Tea Partiers, and all is now confounded by the big spending, big debt populism of President Trump.

Who knows where lies the heart of the party, or if it has a heart?

Our winner-take-all election system (which I would keep) makes it almost impossible for a minor party to become a major factor. Why throw one’s vote away to the Greens, say, when there is no chance of winning any piece of the action, as there is in proportional representation schemes?

In our history there has been one major party collapse, and its replacement by a new party.

The Whigs dissolved by 1854 over internal dissension, especially over the rising anti-slavery movement. The nascent

With our political parties in disarray, might now be the time for a partisan upheaval?

The present major party squabbles have largely been fought along small government versus big government lines, a surface issue that completely misses our bigger problems.

And big government is here to stay, like it or not.

Based on observations from my perch in lily-white, rural central Illinois, the much bigger and fundamental problem is that the underbelly of our society is becoming jiggly soft.

Too many white males are giving up on work, taking refuge in disability insurance.

Single mothers as well as families with his-hersand-theirs children are often so stressed trying to make it that, maybe out of ignorance or guilt, they fail to set high expectations for their children and then hold them to it.

As a result, school achievement in the U.S. is mediocre at best, while China and India have many more honors students among their huge population than we have just-plain students.

We are sleep-walking through our own decline.

We need a new party

that would challenge us all, as John F. Kennedy did, by asking what we can do for our country, rather than the obverse.

I muse about a new party that would challenge all of us, from poor to rich, to focus on the obligations of citizenship. After all, we have unparalleled freedoms and opportunities here, and each citizen has responsibilities to keep them in force.

I dream of an “Accountable Party” (terrible name but great acronym—AP) that would ask us all to pitch in.

For example, the poor on government benefits would be required to “volunteer” in their communities.

At the other end of the economic spectrum, the nouveau niche would be challenged to embrace the sense of noblesse oblige shown by patricians among us in earlier decades.

Instead of building luxury bunkers to protect against Apocalypse, the tech billionaires should be stimulated to work with the young, always up for inspiration, to create a new political party.

The new party would exhort us to be better, more fit citizens, rather than simply to fight over who gets what, as we do today.

Gad, this is quixotic.

But necessary.

DiazDeLeon, Lawley qualify for state MANLIUS — Two Putnam County Lady Panthers advanced to the Class A state track and field finals at the Manlius Sectional May 11. The team garnered 31 points to place 10th in the sectional field of 14 teams.

Sophomore Lindsey DiazDeLeon qualified in the long jump, (16-05.25), a new school record, and in the 800meter run (2:27.61). Junior Olivia Lawley qualified in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17:17 and in the 300-meter low hurdles in 48.62.

DiazDeLeon and Lawley will compete in the IHSA Class A Finals in Charleston this weekend.

Lady Panthers beat Woodland twice

The Lady Panthers beat Streator Woodland twice in games played last week to prepare for regionals starting this week.

Putnam County 8, Streator Woodland 7 The Lady Panthers pushed two runs across in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Streator Woodland 8-7 on May 9. Olivia Holmes was the winning pitcher, going 4.2 innings, walking one, allowing five this and three runs. Haley Cioni pitched 1.1 innings, walking two and allowing three this and two runs. Aleceya Davis went one inning, striking outdone and allowing two hits and two runs. Alivia Resurrecion was 3-4 knocking in two runs on the game winning hit. Olivia Holmes smashed

a three-run homer in the first inning and had two hits along with Carleigh Wellenreiter and Skylar Grevengoed. Putnam County scored three runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth and two in the seventh.

Streator scored three times in the fifth, twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh.

Putnam County 10, Streator Woodland 4 Aleceya Davis was the hitting star, going 4-5 on the night. Haley Cioni went 3-4 at the plate. Alivia Resurrecion, Carleigh Wellenreiter and Paige Veranda all had two hits each. Resurrecion was the winning pitcher, striking out five, walking three and allowing eight hits and four runs in seven innings.

The Panthers won their last three games of the regular season to raise their record to 13-12. Regional play began Monday.

Putnam County 5, Amboy 0 Caleb Dzierzynski was the winning pitcher in the Panthers’ 5-0 Senior Night shutout of Amboy on May 11. He pitched four innings, striking out eight, walking one and allowing one hit. Max Huffstodt pitched three innings, striking out one, walking one and allowing one hit. The Panthers scored twice in the second, once in the third and twice in the sixth. Jarod Williams had two singles. Dzierzynski smashed a double. Connor Bean, Nolan Whitney and Huffstodt all recorded singles.

Putnam County 5, Streator Woodland 3 Logan Kreiser had three hits and drove in a pair of runs on May 9 to help the Panthers to a Tri-County Conference victory in Granville. Brayden Holmes struck out seven batters in five innings to earn the win for PC. Woodcarving classes will be held in June in Henry HENRY — For anyone who has ever had an interest in the art of woodcarving, an opportunity to learn more will be available June 16-18 and June 23-25 in the Henry-Senachwine High School industrial arts room. Times will be 5 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Donations were given in memory of Norm Crook, an accomplished wood carver with the goal of continuing the art of wood carving. Gene Everett will be instructing the six classes on carving a Bluebill duck at the cost of $85.

Each student will

receive all materials needed to construct and paint a working class Bluebill duck. In addition they will receive a Warren Knife/ blades, Kevlar carving glove, half-round rasp and a vice pedestal.

Festival 56 will offer apprentice positions PRINCETON — Festival 56 is announcing an exciting summer opportunity for high school students. The theater is offering up to four students, including this year’s graduates, the opportunity to work as paid apprentices with the resident professional company. Responsibilities will cover various aspects of theater production. The Youth Employment in the Arts program is made possible through federal funds and is sponsored by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

Over eight weeks, each high school student will be assigned to work in one or more of the following areas: scenic design (including properties and scenic art), technical direction (including scenic construction), costume design (including construction and wardrobe), directing (including choreography and/or music direction), lighting and sound design (including electrics and engineering), production

and stage management, and public relations (including marketing and audience services).

Apprentices will work 19 hours per week and will have the opportunity to enter into a mentorship with one of the company’s professional artists. Apprentices will also have the opportunity to volunteer additional time in one or more areas of theater production. Applicants must be available to work June 12 through Aug. 6.

To apply, submit a cover letter stating previous experience, goals relating to future studies or a career in the theater arts at the college or professional level, and a personal artistic statement. Following a review of the applicants, those moving on to the next

The organization has a series of four degrees that are awarded to the members as they progress through their membership.

The first of these accomplishments is the Greenhand degree, which is awarded to first-year students involved in the FFA program. The requirements to receive this award are being an active member in the FFA, beginning a Supervised Agricultural Experience Project, and maintaining good grades in their coursework. FFA members who qualified for this degree received a bronze pin for their FFA jacket. These members made a lasting impact to the organization. They helped out with almost all the home cooking events and did CDEs like forestry, meats and horticulture.

High school students experience legislature through Rezin’s Youth Advisory Council SPRINGFIELD — Dozens of area high school students participated in a unique, hands-on experience in state government on May 2, as part of state Sen. Sue Rezin’s (R-Morris) Youth Advisory Council.

“The future of our state and country depends on those who are in school now,” Rezin said. “We must get young people more involved in the legislative process and show them the importance of public policy. That’s why I was so excited to host my Youth Advisory Council.

These students took initiative, were inquisitive, and full of energy. It’s refreshing to see so many students who are engaged in the political process and who want to be leaders, so they can make their communities, this state, and our country even better.”

Rezin hosted the all-day Youth

Advisory Council, talking with high school students from Coal City High School, LaSalle-Peru, Morris, St. Bede Academy, Streator, Wilmington, Woodland, Hall, Newark, and Ottawa about Illinois government and how the Legislature operates.

She shared stories of her experiences in the Statehouse, discussed what it takes to become a legislator and why public policy is important, and answered questions.

The students visited the Capitol and spent time on the Senate floor.

They heard from a lobbyist, other state senators, and government leaders. Students also met Gov. Bruce Rauner and spoke to him for about 20 minutes in his Capitol office.

The students, who were selected by their teachers to participate, later conducted a mock bill discussion and hearing on issues important to

them.

“I am looking at possibly going into law or government,” said Luke Wamhoff from St. Bede Academy.

“So, this is helping me guide my path.”

“I gained debating skills and how to present an argument from this experience,” said John Moore from Hall High School. “It was great to meet other students who have an interest in politics.”

“I participated because I was interested in learning how things work in Springfield,” said Brandon DeJong from Hall High School. “I really enjoyed the debate. Hearing all the different points of view was interesting because it was things I never thought of before.”

Rezin will host another Youth Advisory Council session this fall in the 38th Senate District.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will feature as speaker Amber Lowery on the topic of maintaining your research records. She believes in the “Rule of Three” in regards to archiving and using family history. One set stays home; one can travel with you as you research; and the third copy, which is a copy of everything, is kept in a safe place outside one’s home. She also will go over

the set up for Google Drive, adding and backing up your data, and how to take your work on the go.

Lowery has worked in libraries nearly 20 years, most recently as a reference assistant at Peoria Public Library, working primarily in local history and genealogy. She has degrees in both marketing and history from Bradley University.

The next Saturday opening of BCGS library will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 3. This is an ideal time for those still working to come in and use the Society resources.

• FFA Continued from Page 10 helped run the pancake and sausage breakfast, and they can be seen at almost every FFA event. They participated in CDE such as forestry, soils and poultry.

Their SAEs were in ag services and diversified crop production entrepreneurship.

CDE stand for career development event. These are more than just some contest, but rather an event full of opportunities. Students get to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real life events.

Students get to explore a wide variety of careers in the field of agriculture and meet fellow members and network. This year the Putnam County FFA participated in 18 different career development events, including: • Horse judging — Ashley Johnson, Hope Keller, Molly Boyd, Cassie Johnson, Emily Bruch and Olivia Brown.

• Forestry (second in section, ninth in state) — Anna Mattern, Carleigh Wellenreitter, Kindra Shawback, Jack Buffington and Hunter Witzman.

• Land use — Nolan Whitney, Michael Schrowang, Michael Dzierzynski, Jacob Wiesbrock, Luke Griffith, Seth Carlson, Connor Taylor and Owen Mallery.

• Food science — Caleb Haig, Emily Bruch, Jonathin Brandner, Carter Trone and Molly Boyd.

• Creed speaking (first in section) — Molly Boyd.

Devin Master and Jonathin Brandner. The team place seventh in the state, and Anna Mattern placed 17th as an individual.

• Ag mechanics (second in section) — Power, Michael Schrowang, first in his area; Electricity, Carter Trone, second in section; Carpentry, Nathinal Welch, third in his area; Welding, Charle McCook, first in his area; and Surveying, Owen Mallery, third in his area.

• VET Science (second in section) — Kindra Shawback, Ashley Johnson, Cassie Johnson, Olivia Brown, Hope Keller and Luis Gonzalez.

• Livestock judging — Megan Wiesbrock, Molly Boyd, Dillion Shoepke, Cassie Johnson, Hope Keller, Devin Masters and Emily Bruch.

• Job interview — Ashley Johnson and Emily Bruch.

• Horticulture — Kyle Leitner and Kindra Shawback.

SAE stands for Supervised Agricultural Experience. Students find an area that interests them, and they keep records on it. Projects range from working for someone and raising animals to having their own business. It takes a lot of hard work and long hours and even some last minute corrections to getting their books done on time. Eight students participated in Section 5 proficiencies in nine different areas. Chapter winners were: Ashley Johnson, ag education; Ashley Johnson, small animal care and man-

agement; Anna Mattern, ag services placement; Olivia Brown, poultry production; Owen Mallery, outdoor recreation; Jacob Cabal, grain production placement; and Luke Griffith, diversified crop production entrepreneurship. Section winners were Ty Lenkaitis, specialty animal production; and Nolan Whitney, fiber and oil production.

Dan Bruch received the FFA Pride Award. The award is presented to an individual who has helped the chapter at numerous cooking events, chaperoned the FFA lock-in and national convention, as well as helped to prepare the ag issues team for nationals.

He can be found working at the annual consignment sale or judging CDE competitions.

Marty Keller received the Honorary Chapter Degree, which goes to an individual that has supported the agriculture department and FFA for more than 15 years. Keller has dug soil pits for numerous soils practices and contest. He has helped plant, till, spray and provide seed to the FFA Putnam County Conservation East Plot.

Ashley Johnson received the FFA State Degree, the highest degree an FFA member can achieve at the high school level. Students must meet a long list of requirements to receive this award, including maintaining a 3.0/4 GPA, work at least 750 hour in excess of scheduled class time on their SAE or invest

$1,500 into their SAE. The Chapter Star Farmer is Ashley Johnson, who raised poultry and rabbits.

Nicholas Bruch received the American Degree, the highest degree that one can earn in their FFA career.

Less than 2 percent of FFA members will ever receive their American Degree.

He will receive his award this fall at the national FFA convention in Indianapolis, Ind. Owen Mallery received the Scholarship Award that goes to the senior with the highest GPA. The senior Leadership Award went to Owen Mallery, Nathaniel Welch and Connor Taylor. These seniors made a lasting impact to the chapter. They had success in CDEs like ag sales and parliamentary procedure.

The Outstanding Senior award was presented to Ashley Johnson. The award goes to an individual who went above and beyond and then some. She has been the foundation of PC FFA for four years.

She has always given 100 percent at everything that she does. She has help lead many committees such as eighth grade recruitment, reading to the kindergarteners, FFA Week and much more. She has helped out at the annual FFA alumni consignment sale and almost all cooking events.

She also participated in a variety of CDEs from horse judging, dairy foods, vet science and poultry to name a few.

Stonier scholarship applications available GRANVILLE — Applications are now available for the I.F. Doug Stonier and Ella Stonier Education Trust which provides for awarding college scholarships to a number of college students for the school year commencing in August.

To be eligible, each student must have resided in the township of Granville, Hennepin or Magnolia, Putnam County, for a period of three years prior to the award of a scholarship.

The scholarships will be awarded on a basis of educational capability and financial need to students working toward a bachelor’s degree who are entering their third or fourth year of college.

Applications for a scholarship may be picked up at the Granville National Bank in Granville. Completed applications will be accepted no later than Wednesday, May 31.
