MAGNOLIA — Most of us have at least one funny or inspirational story we could share about our mothers.

However, most of us haven’t had one of those stories published in the newest edition of the well-known “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books.

The “Best Mom Ever!” edition of the newest Chicken Soup book by Amy Newmark contains 101 stories about humorous, inspiring and loving moms.

It’s also available just in time for Mother’s Day, and Magnolia’s Monica Morris is one of the contributing authors.

Morris said she’s been reading the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books for as long as she can remember, but she said the one which inspired her to write for them was “Chicken Soup for the Baseball Fan’s Soul.”

“I received that book for my birthday from my brother, and the combination of two of my favorite things, baseball and stories about faith, made me think that writing for the Chicken Soup series might be something I’d enjoy,” Morris said.

Morris isn’t a novice writer though; in 2007 she completed her first novel, “Rory’s Song,” and in 2008 she was asked to join 11 other writers from across the country at the “Guideposts” magazine’s bi-annual writer’s workshop in Rye, N.Y.

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The biggest story from the latest Granville Village Board meeting was expected to be the seating of a new village president and two new trustees. However, water flowed its way to the top, much like it recently flowed into residents’ flooded basements and yards.

As the May 2 meeting began, it was standing room only in the village hall, and multiple residents asked how the village planned to correct the widespread flooding caused by the recent heavy rains.

“My home has flooded five times in 10 years, and I’m on my third insurance claim. I had five sump pumps running in my basement, and they couldn’t keep up,” Granville resident Matt Holst said.

He asked the board if they felt this was acceptable.

Morris said she enjoyed sharing her story in the Chicken Soup book because it gave her the opportunity to take a fond look back at some happy childhood memories.

“The title of my story is ‘Mom Versus The Three Stooges,’ and it involves four kids, a harried mom and her clever solution to her children’s fascination with these three comical and somewhat destructive guys. I can’t give away the

Board member Jim Pettit told residents the village quickly applies for any grants it learns of which could help, but he added it can take years for them to be approved and for the village to receive the money.

After many residents said they don’t like the idea of installing drain plugs out of concern of passing the problem along to their neighbors, board member Lucian Verda advised them to “do what you need to do to protect your property.”

A resident living near the school questioned whether its construction could have unintentionally created the increase in flooding problems.

Other residents complained of so much water flowing into their yards that they couldn’t park their vehicles on their property.

tendent Sheli Starkey said the village has received more than 10 inches of rain in the past month, and the storm drains can only effectively handle so much water.

“We have two separate issues to deal with, surface water and sewer issues,” Chamlin & Associate’s Mike Richetta said.

Richetta explained the flooding has been aggravated by the already high level of the water table and added the village is also suffering from a common problem affecting many small, rural towns — inadequate or damaged drainage tiles which could have been put in place more than a century ago.

Richetta asked the residents to meet with him after the meeting and give their addresses, so he could begin compiling data to identify problem areas and begin work on a solution.

“Once we get a better of idea of the situation, we could get lucky and be able to solve several problems by correcting one issue,” Richetta said.

Morris enjoys that each book contains tales which can either bring tears to your eyes or make you laugh out loud, and sometimes it’s both.

“I think what I love the most about the Chicken Soup collection is each story is an intimate story written by the person who experienced it. Each story is fresh and has its own voice. It’s that quality that makes these books so special and popular.

It’s an honor for me to be published in such a book,” Morris said.

She said she’s enjoying writing for faith-based publications like Chicken Soup and “Guideposts” magazine because it allows her to use the creative process of telling a story to inspire as well as entertain readers “Whether I’m interviewing someone else so I can tell their story, or I’m reliving a memory of my own, whenever I sit down in front of my computer to begin a story, I feel blessed,” Morris said.

Another flood-related issue was a request from the Al Cioni dealership regarding a retaining wall being damaged.

Responsibility for the area is shared with the village, and Cioni proposed paying for half the required repairs. The board decided to inspect the area before making a decision.

Railroad improvements Richetta reported railroad representatives have been in the area in preparation of the summer project to improve the crossing on Route 71, but he said no dates have been provided as to when the work would begin.

It will include the closure of the intersection of Route 71 and Church Street, which is adjacent to the crossing because it’s been determined to be a safety issue.

The board discussed when the closure would take place, how much of Church Street will be eliminated and how the flow of Route 71 traffic would be handled during the improvements.

The board decided to wait until a project start date has been announced to make a decision on Church Street and assumed since the village has no truck route, the Route 71 traffic would be managed with traffic lights and a reduction to one lane.

In other board news The board approved Hopkins & Associates to conduct the yearly audit at a cost not to exceed $6,300, which is the same cost as last year’s village audit.

The board also approved a $100 donation to Illinois Valley PADS.

PERU — On Saturday, May 20, the Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru will present the second annual TBM Avenger Reunion. This event, a Salute to Veterans, will feature at least 15 TBM Avengers, a magnificent aircraft.

A host of other aircraft, an exciting airshow, helicopter rides, food and beverages will be available.

Thanks to the generosity of Marquis Energy, the event is free to the public.

More than 10,000 spectators, pilots, crews and volunteers are expected

to attend. Gates open at 8 a.m.; an all-veteran photo will be taken at noon, and air activities will be ongoing until 4 p.m.

Volunteers are needed!

Event planners are seeking more than 250 volunteers.

Volunteers are needed from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in four-hour shifts for help with parking, assisting veterans, distributing water, crowd control, food service and general miscellaneous duties, including set-up/ clean-up activities before and after the event. A volunteer training meeting

will be held on Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at the Peru Airport.

SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Paul Bonucci, Perry Memorial Prompt Care and IVCH Emergency Department medical director, recently served as an expert panelist for the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network’s 2017 Rural Health Summit: “The Opioid Crisis Next Door” conference, held at the Crowne Plaza, Springfield, and attended by about 125 physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, mental health and behavioral health therapists, pharmacists, dentists, policy makers, public health, law enforcement, and community coalition members.

This conference provided education on the initial care and treatment of persons with substance use disorders, options for recovery and management of patients with chronic pain, and also to encourage dialogue among providers on best practices and challenges of treating individuals in local communities.

An authorized buprenorphine prescriber and treating physician to opiate-dependent patients since 2013, Bonucci earned his MD at Northwestern University and has an MBA from the University of Chicago. He completed his

and treatment programs for opioid use and other substance use disorders.

This grassroots effort was organized in an effort to increase awareness of the rapidly growing problem of opioid and heroin use in rural communities and particularly, the lack of community response; create community engagement and assist in the formation of coalitions throughout the state dedicated to the fight against opioid abuse and heroin use; and collaborate with legislators and policy-makers to allocate immediate funding for treatment centers in rural communities.

Illinois State Representative Lashawn Ford, 8th District, Chicago, participated in the event on March 29.

The next conference is anticipated to be held in June and will focus on each of the new coalitions’ progress. Funding for the Rural Health Summit was provided in part by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under a Rural Hospital Flexibility Program grant. GRANVILLE — Carmella “Milly” Arena, 81, of Granville peacefully drifted off to sleep surrounded by her loving family after a very long illness on Saturday, May 7, 2017, at her residence. She was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis which robbed her of her ability to speak and eventually her mobility.

She had lived with her daughter, Linda, and son-in-law, Tom, since 2008.

Milly was born in Chicago on Feb. 26, 1936, to Frank and Carmela Arena. She was the baby of the family and was welcomed by her brothers, Frank and Paul, and her sisters, Jennie and Josephine. The Arena children learned to speak English when they attended school as only Sicilian was spoken at home. She attended Austin High School. She also attended Illinois Valley Community College and obtained her real estate license. She worked many jobs throughout her life including Brach Candy, Motorola, Illinois Bell and Coldwell Banker. With over 30 years working on the Illinois River at Consolidated Grain and Barge, Wolfe Marine Services and ADM Grain, she retired in 2001.

She married Richard Corcoran in 1954 and they had four children. They moved from Chicago to Granville in 1968. She enjoyed performing with the Sweet Adelines with her daughters. The family spent many summers at Lake Wildwood, where they were one of the first members. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in LaSalle and was active in the Cursillo Community.

Last year, her 80th birthday was celebrated by family and friends, her caregivers, including Cindy Golden and Elizabeth Koester, and her hospice team that all loved her so much.

She will be missed by her children, Rick and Brenda Corcoran of Peru, Kathi and Harold “Red” Bly of Peru, Linda and Tom Smith of Granville, and Diana and David Williams of Woodland Hills, Calif.; her grandchildren, Jayme Corcoran and Jeff Rietgraf of LaSalle, Laura Zeman and Max Marx of Peru, Andrea and Sean Brannon of Granville, Crystal and Mike Credi of Peru, Michelle and Joe Hansen of Princeton, Eric Lopez of Ottawa, Amy and Brandon Brucki of Marseilles, Jeff Lopez of Ottawa, and Jason Lopez and Emily Froemel of LaSalle; and her 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by the love of her life, Dave Vicaryous; her sister, Jennie Pacini of Elk Grove Village; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Paul and Frank; one sister, Josephine; two sons, Kevin and Joey; one nephew, Nick; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with Father John Crist officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

STANDARD — Mary “Mary Pat” Patarozzi, 95, of Standard died Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Mary Pat was born April 10, 1922, in Mark to Frank and Caterina (Masinelli) Patarozzi.

She was an inspector at Westclox and Bassick’s. Mary Pat was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville.

Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Haszler of Standard and Norma Massa of Michigan; 13 nieces and nephews; and numerous great- and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Jany in infancy, Esther Ballotti and Clara Bianco; three brothers, Geno, Elso and Max; and two nephews, Rudy Ballotti and Richard Massa.

Services were held Monday, May 8, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Burial was in the Granville Cemetery in Granville. Visitation was also held Monday at the funeral home.

Results of Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement patrols announced LASALLE — Illinois State Police (ISP) District 17 has released the results of Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement (ACE) patrols completed n LaSalle County during April.

These ACE patrols allowed the ISP to focus on preventing, detecting and taking enforcement action in response to violations associated with impaired driving and illegal transportation or consumption of alcohol or drugs.

During the detail, troopers made one arrest for DUI and another for other alcohol/drug violations. One citation and

three warnings were given out for driver’s license offenses. Troopers issued a total of six citations and 38 warnings for other offenses during the patrols.

Alcohol and drug impairment is a factor in more than 30 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. There is one alcohol-related traffic fatality every 53 minutes in the U.S. The ACE program allows officers to work even harder at removing dangerous DUI offenders from the road. This project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Observations from the Field of Dreams

he 54th annual meeting of the Putnam County Historical Society featured a program on tornadoes — past present and future, by Victor Gensini, associate professor of earth sciences at the College of DuPage. President Sidney Whitaker welcomed attendees and introduced Gensini.

Gensini started his program by saying, “I like tornado history, historical paths of tornadoes — like the one that went through Putnam County, trends of tornadoes and what we see now. I have given hundreds of these talks throughout the United States, but this is the first in Putnam County ...

“I love the outdoors, and I do a lot of tornado chasing. I drive 20,000 to 25,000 miles every spring — a lot of driving, a lot of research,” he said.

“I have a deep passion for weather. People ask me what got me into meteorology. My answer is the April 20, 2004, tornado that hit Putnam County,” he continued. “It started just south of Mark, went through Granville, crossed (Route) 89, the Illinois River, LaSalle, Utica.”

Gensini showed pictures of it passing through Putnam County.

s I began the drive home which was going to include a quick stop at the grocery store, my mind was busy with the familiar routine of prioritizing the ever-growing list of household needs with the ever-shrinking bank account.

Frustrated, I was trying to plan how to best spend what I had remaining for the week. However, as I slowed to turn into the grocery store parking lot, there was a sight which put my frustration into a better perspective.

That day, like many of them recently, was chilly, damp and dreary. Those adjectives could also be used to describe the man standing on the opposite corner. He appeared beaten down, dirty and depressed. His head and long straggly beard hung low, while the sign he held said he was stranded and needed help.

I’ve lived in large cities where there are people asking for help on every corner of every intersection. There are simply too many to attempt to help, and there’s also often the risk of a con or danger in that sort of interaction.

But, it’s an unusual sight here in Princeton, and maybe that’s why the sight of him struck a chord.

Maybe it was seeing his furry little traveling companion curled up on his backpack which laid on the wet grass. Whatever it was, it pulled me out of my world and into his cold and desperate journey, a realization my struggles are much more desirable than those of many others.

I didn’t know how to help, but I figured the guy was probably cold and hungry.

I wandered the aisles for a few minutes before deciding to get him a bowl of hot soup from the deli. I didn’t want him to have to share with his little friend, so I also went down the pet aisle to grab a few small packs of dog food. It wasn’t much, but I figured it may help them hold on until they were able to continue their journey.

I left the store and pulled into the parking lot across the street. As he saw me approaching he walked

COMMENTARY Dave Cook toward me. His demeanor was true, and there was no doubt in my mind he needed help. I introduced myself and stuck my hand out.

He seemed surprised, but quickly shook my hand and quietly introduced himself as Ted. I didn’t want to ask invasive questions but wanted to see if I could offer more help. He pointed to a car in the distance and said he’d ran out of money on the way home to Tennessee. His little dog watched alertly but never left the backpack.

I offered him the small grocery bag and told him what was inside. After thanking me and wishing me well, I did the same. As I got back into my safe, warm vehicle before heading back to my safe, warm home, I looked back at Ted. He was squatting down behind his sign which offered minimal protection from the chilled wind.

I couldn’t see what was happening but knew he and his best friend were beginning to eat some much-needed food. I was going home to eat, and during the drive I wondered if he would still be standing on the corner the following day.

I never saw Ted and his little dog again. I like to think someone else stopped to help and he was able to make his way back home.

Wherever you are, Ted, I hope both of you are someplace safe, warm and familiar.

While I hope I’m never in his situation, I think Ted helped me as much as I helped him. We all have day-to-day struggles, and some days are better than others. He helped remind me there will always be those with greater struggles in life, and even if unable to offer much, there are still plenty of opportunities for us to help each other when we can.

Gensini told the group temperatures around the world have been on the rise since amid the 1960s, which is causing more tornadoes. He showed pictures of one tornado after another from all over the United States. They were great pictures.

Gensini went on to say, “July 17, 1972, a tornado went through Henry into Putnam County,

where it went over Fish-N-Fun, where I lived. April 20, 2004, the F-3 tornado went through Granville. June 5, 2010, the most recent tornado went through Magnolia. There is an average of one tornado every six to seven years.

“From a climate perspective starting 1950, there was a huge increase in tornadoes because they had never got reported,” he continued. “North America has the most tornadoes. People come from all over the world to study them here. Argentina is the next; the Amazon, South Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia are all next.

“The Great Plains of the U.S. has tornado alley. Those poor

folks that live along the 35 corridor — they are in the finest logical maximum place for tornadoes. The corridor that runs through Oklahoma City, Wichita, Topeka, Dallas and Fort Worth certainly have a high frequency of them,” he said.

At the end of his program, Gensini showed great pictures of the tornadoes he has chased.

They were very impressive to watch — great photography too.

It was a very entertaining program. I am sure everyone is as proud of our Putnam County son, as I am.

Sunnin’ and funnin’

unnin’ and funnin’ — doesn’t that sound great? It sure did to me. The end of December Jerry and I packed up a month’s worth of pills, shorts, tank tops and sun screen and headed south. We had three days of driving to anticipate putting our feet in the sand and walking the beaches in the Ft. Myers Beach, Fla., area.

Going for a month or more is a whole different ball game than going for a shorter time.

It was no easy feat convincing Jerry it was a good idea. For 30 years or more, I worked on him.

Finally, last year we made the big jump, and from the time we could peel off our winter layers of clothing and sighted the first palm tree on the way down, we both were psyched for sunnin’ and funnin’.

Well wouldn’t you know, Florida broke its rain record.

The average Florida rainfall for January is 1.5 inches. Last year we waded through 13 inches of the stuff. Now I’m not talking about a shower here and there.

The entire area around us was plummeted with downpours, wind storms and tornadoes.

Two hours after we had enjoyed visiting a sunshine filled outdoor art show in Coral Gables, a tornado went through that area.

On another day, after leaving a friend’s condo in Naples, a hurricane-type storm went through where we had been, tearing down palm trees and leaving thousands without power.

Our friends, Jim and Sharon Read, have a winter home in

COMMENTARY Earlene Campbell Indian Creek Park, and Sharon had found us a rental. A good lot of the time we sat in our rented trailer while it was pouring rain outside. Staying near the Reads made for more fun. “Hey, I’m feeling like a Starbucks.” A text from her and she and I would take off. Possibly doing a bit of shopping along the way. Jerry got a lot of books read.

But, I really want to talk about this year ... It’s the last day of our travel down to Indian Creek, and Jerry said in a raspy voice, “I’m not feeling too good.” I drove the rest of the way to Indian Creek.

First day: Jerry is down for the count with that nasty cold that lasts forever – unless you are Jerry. Five days later he was better. Seven days and he was good to go. Second day: I left him and walked the beach with Sharon. I would like to tell you I just couldn’t stand to watch him suffer, but that would be a lie. I was ready for beachin’. Third day: Cough – cough – cough; sniffle – sniffle – sniffle.

“Jerry, I’ve got it,” I said in my raspy voice.

Dang!! I already had been down and out a week the first part of December and had not fully recovered. Fifth day: Jerry — way better. Me —full blown laryngitis! Now picture this – me trying to communicate with

hard-of-hearing Jerry. After straining my already abused voice in a third attempt to get my message across, I realized this just wasn’t going to work. Light bulb!! I got out my trusty I-Pad and started writing. A smile from Jerry and we were in business.

Meanwhile, the rest of Ft. Myers Beach was basking in sunny 80-degree weather. Jerry was reading and watching football while I was convalescing. I left him and headed for the couch in the lanai (i.e., Florida sunroom or porch). Let’s see: Kleenex – check; cough lozenges – check; I-Phone – check; I-Pad – check; bed pillow – check; fleece coverlet – check; coffee – check. Exhausted and with all necessities handy, I’m snuggled in and ready to flick on the TV. Oh man, of course the remote is across the room!

Seventh day: I’m out of here one way or another … coughcough. We took a drive, got 4 for $4 lunches at a fast-food, and ate while sitting in the parking lot, under a palm tree, with car windows down. Boy that felt good!

Eighth day: Cold worse. With time and sunshine wasting away, and no sign of good health in the near future, we headed for a prompt care.

Tenth day through thirty-first day: Sunnin’ and funnin’ at the beach – with Kleenex and lozenges in tow.

Hello, my name is Henrietta Nickelsen and I had a recent stay at Colonial Health Care and Rehabilitation Centre after I encountered the inability to stand on my right leg.

My leg was very weak. As a result of choosing Colonial I found a welcome by administration and the therapy department. The employees were friendly and helpful. I was using the therapy department mostly and the care and help I received was excellent, the staff of the department were very helpful and well trained. The therapy was an excellent service and wonderful help. I specifically liked the cleanliness of the building!!! I am grateful for the help they have given me to live a normal life. I feel very grateful! I would recommend Colonial to anyone needing this service.

Hennepin Park District will offer swimming lessons HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District will have three sessions of Red Cross swimming lessons this summer.

Each session will be two weeks long. There will still be six levels of swimming ability.

Level 1 is the beginning class and you have to be 5 years old by Sept.

1 and least 42 inches tall to join this class. The morning sessions will run 40-minute classes, Monday through Friday. The night session will run 50-minute classes, Monday through Thursday.

The first session is June 19-30.

The times are: 9 to 9:40 a.m., all levels; 9:50 to 10:30 a.m., all levels; and 10:40 to 11:20 a.m., all levels.

The second session is July 10-21.

The times are: 9 to 9:40 a.m., all levels; 9:50 to 10:30 a.m., all levels; and 10:40 to 11:20 a.m., all levels.

The third session is the night session, and it is July 24-Aug. 3. The times are: 5 to 5:50 p.m., all levels; and 6 to 6:50 p.m., all levels.

Registration for these sessions will start Saturday, May 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. You must come in person to

register at the Hennepin Pool. If you cannot come to register at this time, you will be able to register during normal pool hours after May 20. The cost of the lessons is $33 per child.

If you live in Hennepin or Hennepin Township, they will pay for all lessons for each session. If you live in Granville, Granville Township, Mark or McNabb they will pay $33 per child for one session. If you live in Standard or Magnolia, they will pay $16.50 for one session.

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging (WIAAA) will be holding a Public Hearing at the Putnam County Community Center on Monday, May 22, 2017 from 10:30-11:30 AM. Older adults, adults with disabilities, family members providing care for older adults, grandparents raising grandchildren, aging service providers, public officials and the public are all invited to attend.

WIAAA Public Information Document (PID) provides a summary of their FY2018 plan. Each year, WIAAA submits an Area Plan to the Illinois Department on Aging requesting federal and state funding to provide home and community based services for older adults and their caregivers and in some instances adults living with disabilities within their ten county service area. The Area Plan is developed by assessing the needs of older adults, their caregivers, and adults with disabilities through their Aging and Disability Resource Network services to identify issues for short and long range planning and setting priorities for funding.

This plan will be implemented October 1, 2017. May 23 in Magnolia MAGNOLIA — “The Life of John F. Kennedy” will be presented by historian Jim Gibbons at 6 p.m.

Born in Brookline, Mass., John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born a child of extreme wealth and privilege.

Though he could have led a life of great ease, he felt that it was his duty to make the most of his life.

Kennedy was the second son of his father, Joseph P. Kennedy, who was a former U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. John Kennedy was taught that he needed to achieve great things in life. He graduated from Harvard University, and then enlisted in the Navy to eventually become lieutenant (junior grade) to command patrol torpedo boat, PT- 109. The boat was rammed and then sank on Aug. 2, 1943, in the South Pacific. He heroically tried to save his crew members and earned a Purple Heart.

Kennedy next entered politics in

1946 by winning the Democratic primary for Massachusetts’ 11th Congressional District. He became both a member of the House and Senate.

Then at the age of 42, he became the youngest elected president of the United States. He had a turbulent presidency, including the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, civil rights and the loss of his newborn son in August of 1963. After losing his son, only a few months later on Nov. 22, 1963, John Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 46.

Stonier scholarship applications available GRANVILLE — Applications are now available for the I.F. Doug Stonier and Ella Stonier Education Trust which provides for awarding college scholarships to a number of college students for the school year commencing in August.

To be eligible, each student must

The scholarships will be awarded on a basis of educational capability and financial need to students work-

PERU — The Illinois Valley Herb Guild will host its annual plant sale and herb faire from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the gymnasium at St. Bede Academy.
