Victim’s family on murderer’s parole: ‘It brings back every single memory’ Siblings speak out against the freeing of Henry Hillenbrand; murderer will be living in Granville

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media Linda Tenopir’s family tried to shield her from Facebook on April 26.

News reports were released saying her stepsister’s murderer, Henry Hillenbrand, had been set free from prison on parole.

When she was finally told the news, she couldn’t hold back her tears.

“I lost it,” Tenopir said. “It brings back every single memory to 1970.”

Hillenbrand, 71, had been serving a 150-year and a 240-year sentence at Menard Correctional Center for the 1970 deaths of 22-year-old Vietnam veteran George Evans and Tenopir’s 19-year-old stepsister, Patricia Pence, both of Streator.

Hillenbrand was released from prison April 26.

He confessed to the murders. He snuck through a window and shot Evans in the head. Pence then locked herself in a bathroom, but Hillenbrand forced himself in, dragged her out and forced her into his car. When she tried to escape him, he shot her in the back, then four more times. He also crushed her head with his rifle stock.

The Prisoner Review Board voted 14-0 in favor of Hillenbrand’s parole.

According to documents, the board, after “reviewing all factors available at this time,” concluded Hillenbrand is a “good risk for parole.”

The news is a shock to Tenopir, who referred to Pence as her best friend.

“How did he even get out?” she asked from her Arizona home.

Even beyond the shock, Pence’s family has questions.

Delores Pence, another of Patricia’s sisters who lives in Streator, wants to know why her family wasn’t notified of the parole hearing. Her family has participated in every hearing, either by giving testimony or writing a letter.

Statement from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and State’s Attorney’s Office regarding the release of Henry Hillenbrand At 3:47 p.m. on April 25, the Putnam County State’s Attorney’s Office received an email from the Illinois Department of Corrections concerning the release of Henry C. Hillenbrand to occur on April 26.

Included in this email notification, Hillenbrand’s offenses included two counts of murder. One sentence carried a term of 150 years and the second sentence carried a term of 240 years. These convictions occurred in LaSalle County. The email indicated Hillenbrand was moving to an address located on Silverspoon Avenue in Granville.

Having no background on Hillenbrand’s crimes and a notification of release for the next day gave the sheriff’s office and the state’s attorney’s office great concern due to the proximity of Hillenbrand’s pending address to the two schools in Granville.

Hillenbrand will have to register as a violent offender, which he did on April 29. However, state law doesn’t prevent Hillenbrand from living within 500 feet of a school.

The main concern of the sheriff’s office and the state’s attorney’s office is the safety of our residents and children who attend these schools.

It should be noted certain people have a misconception that the state’s attorney’s office and the sheriff’s office can prevent Hillenbrand from moving into our community. Unfortunately, due to no restrictions under state law, a person convicted of two murders cannot be prevented from moving into our community.

If citizens have concerns about the Illinois Department of Corrections inmates being released early, they are encouraged to contact members of the Illinois General Assembly.

“They used to contact us every time one was coming up until my dad passed. It’s been up to us to call when one is coming up, and last year, we gave them our address, our phone numbers. We made a prom-

ise to our mom and dad before they passed we would not give this up.”

The Times traded messages with the spokesman for the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, but was not able to speak with him prior to deadline.

On the agency’s website, it says victims and complaining witnesses can receive notice of a parole hearing by writing its office directly.

“This is the only way to receive notification of these hearings,” according to the website. “Signing up with victim’s services or other entities such as VINE currently does not mean you will receive notice of parole hearings.

You must contact our office. You must also keep our office updated with your current contact information to ensure notification.”

The Pence family was not alone in feeling taken off guard.

LaSalle County State’s Attorney Karen Donnelly said she wasn’t told of the upcoming hearing, and the Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office was notified one day in advance Hillenbrand was planning on moving to an address located on Silverspoon Avenue in Granville.

Both Delores Pence and Linda Tenopir have not slept well since the parole announcement.

Tenopir said she’s lived with the fear before, because Hillenbrand had escaped prior to his sentencing and lived in Missouri under an alias for 13 years. The fugitive was captured after bringing a bear hide into the United States from Canada and was returned to LaSalle County in May 1983.

She remembers Hillenbrand relayed threats through a relative when he escaped, including one that stuck with her: “Before this is over, you’ll all be dead.”

“I was constantly looking over my shoulder at night,” Tenopir said.

“I was always scared, always looking. Now I feel that way again. And I know he doesn’t like me. What’s going to stop him now? He’s broke out of the county jail once, and nobody found him. How will they keep track of him?”

Part of Hillenbrand’s parole orders are he’s not allowed to contact the family of the victims and he must register as a violent offender, which he did April 29. The Putnam County Sheriff ’s and State’s Attorney’s offices stated they were concerned about the proximity of him living close to two schools in Granville.

plan and support group after he was released from prison.

He said his long-term goal is to move to Missouri and work in his son’s logging business.

Pence’s family described Hillenbrand as an evil person prior to the murders. He had violent episodes with Patricia prior to the murders, including one where she went to the police after he choked her.

The family is skeptical Hillenbrand has changed.

“I think he got one over on them,” Tenopir said of the Prisoner Review Board.

She’s also convinced even if he has changed, he doesn’t deserve his freedom because of the grief and fear he’s caused, and still causes today.

“I understand his family is upset when they say they can’t see him,” said Tenopir, who mentioned Hillenbrand and Patricia also had a daughter together. “How do they think we feel? We have to go to the cemetery to visit our sister.”

Financial woes worsen; board plans for staffing and insurance cuts for employees Changes expected by June; Emergency Management building will be mothballed

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — After years of overspending and dwindling revenue, the Putnam County Board is facing a six-figure deficit that is finally forcing board members into the uncomfortable position of staffing and benefit cuts.

On Nov. 6, 2018, the county tried to raise additional revenue through a referendum to raise the corporate tax rate from .37 to .67, but more than 75 percent of Putnam County voters rejected the proposal.

The vote totals were 620 in favor, and 1,882 against the tax increase.

At the .37 rate, the county collects approximately $553,000 a year. The increased rate would have collected about $1.04 million for the county’s General Fund. If approved, the increase would have closed the current deficit in the county’s budget.

Efforts to curb spending have made a bit of difference, but haven’t gone far enough.

The county has already borrowed $125,000 from its Federal Aid Matching Fund, and the board has

approved the borrowing of up to $330,000 additionally from that same fund.

The county board has also previously approved borrowing $250,000 from its road Kevin Kunkel fund.

“Unless a bunch of money suddenly comes in, we’re going to be borrowing today,” Kunkel told board members during their May 6 Finance Committee meeting.

Board Chairman Steve Malavolti said the county’s new insurance rates will take effect on June 1 and that they have increased by 8.8 percent. The total for the next fiscal year’s premiums will be roughly $500,000. He added personnel and insurance costs were the county’s largest expenses.

“The county can no longer meet these costs. Something’s got to give. It’s not sustainable,” Malavolti said.

He said many counties provide stipends to their employees for health insurance and that they were the best way to reduce expenses.

Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle said the type of stipends being referred to were to encourage employees to voluntarily add themselves to their spouse’s insurance, if possible.

Doyle added that to only provide a stipend for health care, regardless of whether employees were married and had that option, would “greatly devastate our workforce and wouldn’t come close to meeting health care costs.”

He added the county was already lagging behind others with its wage rates, and he predicted a major, negative change to benefits would result in a large loss of valu-

When the board asked attending officeholders how a voluntary stipend would affect the employees of their departments, they learned the majority of their staff were either single or married to county employees.

The board eventually set a morning deadline of Friday, May 10, for officeholders to report on how these stipends could affect their offices and the voluntary interest.

Senate OKs graduated tax amendment Measure moves to Illinois House; GOP members oppose it

BY JERRY NOWICKI AND PETER HANCOCK Capitol News Illinois SPRINGFIELD — A graduated income tax amendment is on the move at the Illinois State Capitol.

On a busy May 1 afternoon, Senate Democrats advanced the proposal, House Republicans held a news conference bashing it, and Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker addressed two organizations composed of members who are vocally opposed to it.

Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 1, which would allow the placement of a graduated tax question on the November 2020 general election ballot, passed with support from all 40 Senate Democrats and no Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Bill Brady, a Bloomington Republican, said his caucus opposed the graduated tax

because the current mandated flat tax structure protects the middle class.

“I believe the crafters of our current Constitution, which included a flat tax and was embraced by the people of Illinois, designed it specifically to protect middle-income families from politicians,” Brady said.

Oak Park Democratic Sen. Don Harmon, SJRCA 1’s sponsor, said the flat tax, which is currently 4.95 percent on all Illinoisans, does the opposite.

“You are protecting the uber rich, not the middle class,” Harmon said.

A graduated tax would allow the state to impose higher rates on greater margins of income.

Senate Bill 687, carried by Olympia Fields Democrat Toi Hutchinson, contains the rate structure that would go into effect should the constitutional amendment become law. It passed with votes from 36 Democrats.

“The people who have been hit the most and the hardest with lack of opportunity and the loss of the services we all rely on, are the folks that everyone keeps saying we need to stand up and we need to protect,” Hutchinson said.

“So far, this is the only plan that does that. There is no other plan on the table to deal with $3.4 billion of a structural deficit that we all know we have.”

Per the bill, single filers would pay the maximum rate of 7.99 percent on all income once their taxable income tops $750,000. For joint filers, that rate takes effect once income tops $1 million.

For joint filers outside of the top brackets, the rates in the Senate plan are 4.75 percent on taxable income from $0 to $10,000; 4.9 percent from $10,001 to $100,000; 4.95 percent from $100,001 to $250,000; 7.75 percent from $250,001 to $500,000; and 7.85 percent from $500,001 to $1 million.

For single filers, tax rates are the same as joint filers up to $250,000; but the 7.75 percent rate applies from $250,001 only to $350,000, while the 7.85 percent rate applies from $350,001 to $750,000.

The bill also includes an increase in the property tax credit from 5 percent to 6 percent, and a $100-perchild tax credit for couples earning less than $100,000 and single persons earning less than $80,000.

But Republicans, including Jason Barickman of Bloomington and Dale Righter of Mattoon, said there is no guarantee the rates provided in this plan will stay as advertised for any period of time.

Righter said other states with graduated tax structures have raised the top rate 24 times over the past 20 years and on several occasions the income threshold necessary to meet the top rate has dipped below $100,000.

“We should not make it easier to raise taxes,” Righter said. “The national experience comparing flat tax rates and graduated tax rates teaches us this will make it easier to do just that.”

But Hutchinson said the threshold to raise taxes will remain the same as it was before the amendment, and a state-by-state comparison does not adequately sum up Illinois’ situation. She said the “hollowing out of state government” has affected lower-income earners while the flat tax “worked just fine” for the wealthiest Illinoisans, who are trying to protect it.

Kinzinger supports building a wall as a boundary, because he said it will make it easier for border patrol to focus on smaller areas where drug cartels smuggle drugs into the U.S. He also supports reworking laws for asylum seekers.

“It’s a massive crisis,” he said.

to the election, but he’s also been critical of the president’s Twitter comments. Additionally, Kinzinger was critical of colleagues during the federal shutdown.

In December, the 40-year-old Kinzinger was one of the Republicans mentioned by colleagues as a potential retiree. He told the New York Times: “I fully intend to run again,” but conceded he takes little pleasure in being asked to account for “every tweet, every comment” the president makes.

He told The Times in Ottawa he always likes to take some time to think about re-election as the filing date gets closer.

Ex-transportation chief backs state gas tax hike LaHood says state investment needed for economic growth

BY JERRY NOWICKI Capitol News Illinois Jnowicki@capitolnewsillinois.com SPRINGFIELD — A high-profile Republican on April 29 gave his support to an increase to the state’s gas tax during a meeting of a special Senate capital committee.

Ray LaHood, a Peoria Republican who served from 1995 to 2009 in Illinois’ 18th congressional district before serving as secretary of transportation under President Barack Obama, said an infrastructure bill is also a “jobs bill and an economic development bill.”

In his testimony at the Michael A. Bilandic Building in Chicago, LaHood sounded similar alarms to those who spoke at five previous meetings of the committee.

“My focus is on the fact that Illinois is one big pothole right now,”

LaHood said. “We’ve had these brutal winters, and people are complaining about potholes. And I believe that if the General Assembly raised the gas tax and fixed up the roads and bridges, people would be very happy.”

The infrastructure shortfall is also a safety risk, many testified. Dave Bender, president and CEO of the American Council of Engineering Companies-Illinois, said 45 percent of the state’s bridges are at least 50 years old, and most have a life expectancy of just 50 to 60 years.

James Derwinski, executive director of Metra Rail, said half of the rail line’s bridges were installed more than 100 years ago, and the oldest Metra car in use today was built in 1953.

Bender said the state’s road and bridge infrastructure is in such bad shape because nearly 90 percent of it is federally funded, while the state chipped in just 4 percent in 2016. The federal contribution is in danger of shrinking, he said, if Illinois continues to fail to meet federal matching guidelines by billions of dollars.

taxes in recent years, including several Republican-controlled states.

He said Illinois has one of the lowest rates in the nation for a gas tax at a time when fuel purchases are shrinking due to an increase in fuel efficiency and electric vehicles.

The fact that the state has a “lock box” amendment for motor fuel tax which permits its use only for safety of roads and bridges is beneficial for the transparency of the process, LaHood said. He also said any legislation increasing the gas tax should include provisions to raise the gas tax along with the rate of inflation.

State Sen. Martin Sandoval, a Chicago Democrat and Transportation Committee chairman, said his Senate Bill 103 includes such a provision. That bill would raise the gas tax from 19 cents to 38 cents, along with raising automobile registration fees, including those for electric cars.

Another bill, House Bill 3823 carried by Rep. Andre Thapedi (D-Chicago) and backed by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, would increase the gas tax even further while phasing out the sales tax on

motor fuel among other wide-ranging changes.

Sandoval said his bill has only one co-sponsor — ­ another Democrat.

LaHood and Tom Oakley, a former newspaper publisher in Quincy, told the committee they would help lobby for an infrastructure bill.

“What you have today, Mr. Chairman and members of the committee, are two Republicans from downstate Illinois who are promoting to fix up our infrastructure and raise the gas tax to do it,” LaHood said.

LaHood’s testimony was followed by eight panels of speakers requesting added infrastructure spending that would benefit their varying organizations, businesses, agencies and boards. Those representatives were from transportation agencies, port authorities, higher education institutions, environmental organizations, pedestrian and bicycling advocates and other groups.

Mary Sue Barrett of the Metropolitan Planning Council said those debating infrastructure spending often ask the wrong questions.

“First, we have to ask what’s the cost of inaction,” she said.

Registration begins May 11 HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District is having three sessions of Red Cross swimming lessons this summer.

PAC announces registration being accepted for 17th annual children’s summer drama camp PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council has announced registration is being accepted for the 17th annual children’s summer drama camp for children entering grades 2-9.

Camp will run for two weeks, June 10-21, from 2 to 5 p.m. There will also be an afternoon camp running July 29-Aug. 9 if there is sufficient interest. The camp cost is $95, with special rates for siblings. Need-based scholarships are also available upon request for those who meet the criteria.

Each camp session culminates in the performance (5:30 p.m. on June 21 and Aug. 9) of an original play written specifically for the campers and, to a large extent, tailored to the needs and abilities of the campers. Campers in each session of camp name their own production. Children get the hands-on experience of creating a show, from set and light work to costuming to performing.

Camp activities also include theater and improvisational games like you might see on the television show, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”

PCEF funds field trip for PCJH sixth-graders

MCNABB — Sixth-grade students from Putnam County Junior High were able to recently visit the Peoria Riverfront Museum thanks to the generosity of the Putnam County Educational Foundation.

Students experienced the IMAX engineering movie “Dream Big,” which included several prominent female engineers to inspire more women to go into the field. This film related to the recent PCJH math class project in which students applied for and researched their dream job, as well as designed and edited a floor plan for their own dream house.

Students also enjoyed the several hands-on applications of the museum’s weather lab, which included demonstrations of vacuums, tornadoes and lightning. The class also watched “Dynamic Earth” in the planetarium. This film focused on the carbon cycle and what makes life on Earth possible. Both of these attractions shared a connection with the students’ weather unit that is a part of their science curriculum.

Other exhibits included the Illinois High School Association’s test of physical limitations; “10 Medical Inventions that Changed the World”; “Illinois River Encounter”; “The Street,” which documented the history of Peoria; and “American Decoy,” which was about the history of hunting decoys.

MCNABB — Cassandra “Cassie” Johnson has been selected by McNabb American Legion Auxiliary 1242 to attend the Girls’ State Patriotism and Leadership Conference from June 16-22 in Charleston.

Johnson is a junior at Putnam County High School. She is active in the Future Farmers of America and received the Greenhand Award in 2017. In 2018, she was selected as the Outstanding Sophomore and also received the Illinois Top Ten Gold Chapter Reporter Award. She is currently serving as a reporter, is a memCassie Johnson ber of the National Honor Society, is on the high honor roll and is also a member of the school band.

Johnson is a member of the PC Progressors 4-H Club and current president. She also belongs to the 4-H Federation and has served as the Marshall-Putnam 4-H Ambassador since 2018 and will remain so until 2020.

They then campaign, hold rallies, debate, and vote to elect city, county and state officials. Other attendees can be given appointments to visit offices and share viewpoints as citizens. Once home, the girls are encouraged to continue their community service.

BLOOMINGTON — The Chief Senachwine Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced member Sharon Bittner was elected recording secretary of the Illinois state organization during the April 26-28 state conference held in Bloomington.

The gathering was the 123rd convention of the Illinois organization. Attendance figures showed 360 members and guests registered for the three-day event.

“We are delighted to have a major state officer from our chapter. Sharon is extremely well qualified for this position, and she has earned it. We are proud of her and congratulate her on her election,” Nancy Gillfillan, chapter regent, said.

The state conference is where officers, state chairmen and chairmen of national committees can relate reports, share information, hold workshops, and give awards to members of the 103 Illinois chapters with membership of 7,716 women. Time is also allowed for election of officers of the Illinois state organization with half elected each year.

In addition to Bittner, elected for 20192021, was State Regent Sharla Luken of Evanston; Patricia Hopkins-Price, chaplain, of Springfield; Deborah Sandercock, registrar, of Charleston; and Marria

Sharon Bittner Blinn, historian, of Orland Park. The positions of vice regent, corresponding secretary, organizing secretary, treasurer and librarian were elected in 2018.

The new state officers will be feted at a new officers luncheon on July 27 in Bloomington.

Camp scheduled for June 24 to July 5 PRINCETON — Learning Stage, the education committee of the Princeton Theatre Group, is offering Camp 56, a two-week summer day camp for youths entering third-grade through 2019 graduating seniors. Participants can experience and take part in live performances while immersing themselves in the many aspects of producing a show.

The camp is held in cooperation with Festival 56, which this summer marks its 16th​season of bringing outstanding professional theater to local audiences. Camp 56 itself is returning for its eighth consecutive year of providing a theater-based camp for young people.

The camp will be held weekdays from June 24 to July 5 (no camp July 4). Camp directors Lisa Gadomski and Nicki Butler will engage campers in a series of fun-filled activities, including song, dance, makeup, costuming, trips to the Festival 56 sets, and visits with cast and crew. The culmination of the camp experience will be an onstage appearance — as part of the chorus ensemble — in several performances of the Festival 56 production of “Mary Poppins.”

The eighth-grade boys track team and eighth-grade girls track team both won

first places overall.

Qualifiers for state among the boys were the 4x2 and 4x4 relay teams, Wyatt Grimshaw in the 400-meter dash, and Orlando Harris in the discus.

IVCC Youth Basketball Camp will be July 8-11 at IVCC gym OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball team will host its annual basketball camp Monday,

July 8, through Thursday, July 11, in the gym.

Camp for first- to fifth-graders is 9 to 10:45 a.m.; sixth- through ninth-graders is 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Head Coach Chris Herman and his players will work with participants on fundamentals.

Campers will participate in drills, stations and competitions designed to develop their individual shooting, passing, ball-handling and defensive abilities.

“The camp is designed to not only improve each camper’s skills, but also provide a fun week of basketball,” Herman said.

Preregistration is recommended, and the cost is $50 per player and includes a camp T-shirt.

Panthers defeat Midland, sweep twin bill over R-B The Putnam County High School boys baseball team scored a 10-2 win over Midland May 4.

Dan Sabotta pitched a complete game six-hitter over seven innings, striking out four in the process.

The Panthers managed only six hits of their own, but combined with seven errors committed by Midland, were able to score 10 runs, including six runs in the sixth inning to expand

a 4-2 lead into a 10-2 final score.

Luke Olson had two hits for PC, Caleb Tonozzi had two RBIs, and Chris Uzella, Olson and Sabotta all scored two runs.

Twin wins over R-B Putnam County defeated Roanoke-Benson twice on May 3.

Game 1 was a 13-1, 5-inning victory for the Panthers, followed by a 9-6

PC victory in the second game.

Putnam County roared out to a 12-1 lead after four innings in the first game and scored another run in the fifth to wrap up the run-rule win.

Leading the way with three hits for PC was Nolan Whitney, while four teammates rapped out two hits apiece, Luke Carlson, Brayden Holmes, Luke Olson and Caleb Tonozzi. Carlson, Whitney and Tonozzi had three RBIs each.

Jacob Williams was the winning pitcher, scattering seven hits over five innings.

Game 2 started out strong again for PC, which built a 7-0 lead after three innings and had a 9-4 lead going into the seventh, when Roanoke-Benson scored two runs to make things interesting, but the rally fizzled, and PC celebrated a 9-6 win.

Wright sets school record in discus

With a toss of 159 feet 5 inches, Kaleb Wright, a Putnam County senior, set a new school record in the discus at the Titans Coed Track and Field Invite at Wethersfield Stadium in Kewanee on April 26. Wright eclipsed the 49-yearold school record set in 1970 (150-10) by John Brandstatter. Wright also broke the Titans Invite meet record with his throw, according to Chuck McConnell, Putnam County High School boys track and field coach.

Ptak steps down as IVCC women’s basketball coach OGLESBY — Tom Ptak announced recently he’s stepping down as the Illinois Valley Community College women’s basketball coach after six seasons.

Ptak led the 2016-17 team that included Daniela Pavlovich, Hannah Wolfe and Julia Pohar to the Region IV District II championship game and was twice named Arrowhead Conference Coach of the Year.

Despite struggling to field teams of 10 or more players, Ptak’s squads remained competitive. Hired in July 2013, Ptak scrambled to put a team together, a unit that would go on to win a surprising 12 games.

“I know when we entered the gym with the small number of players we had, other teams counted it as a victory. That year an opposing coach told me, ‘Your team plays hard.’ To me, when you can get the most out of your talent, that is the greatest

compliment you can get,” Ptak said.

A 1975 St. Bede Academy g raduate and three-sport star, Ptak’s mentor was legendary Bruin football coach John Gaughan.

Tom “Coach Gaughan Ptak always said if your team was better at the end of the season than it was at the beginning, you did your job. I believe we did that at IVCC,” Ptak said.

Supportive coaching style Ptak’s coaching style over a 22-year career was supportive rather than confrontational.

“I never believed in being in-yourface or making players uncomfortable. I told my players I was their biggest fan. I didn’t want them looking over their shoulder if they made

a mistake,” he said.

“No one wants to be embarrassed.

I wanted my players to relax and have fun. My teams knew I believed in them.”

Team-building events included a fall trip to Chicago, where players toured the Lakefront on bikes, viewed architectural landmarks and saw — from the 25th floor of a building overlooking Grant Park — the path the Great Chicago Fire had taken.

“I wanted to expose them to things they were unaware of,” he said.

“Those trips will have a greater impact on the players as they grow older.”

Ptak largely recruited only in-district players and had success with that model, “but that got tougher and tougher.”

He praised the support he received from IVCC Athletic Director Cory Tomasson, President Jerry Corcor-

an and administrative assistant Sue Harding — “mother of the athletic department.”

“Everyone provided me everything I needed to be successful. I was never pressured over wins and losses. Foremost, they care about their student athletes and ensure they are students first,” he said.

His greatest support came from spouse Lynn Cawley, who encouraged his players and provided them with thoughtful kindnesses such as special-order basketball cookies.

“I could never do what I do without Lynn,” he said.

Aside from coaching, Ptak operates a family funeral home, assists with Lynn’s busy hair salon and is the city of LaSalle’s longest serving alderman.

“What I will miss most about coaching is the relationships you develop with players,” he said.

Cottage Food Law Update Class offered on May 15 Advance registration is requested by May 13 LASALLE — For people who have considered selling homemade foods at a farmers market, there are basic guidelines growers and vendors must observe in preparation for farmers market sales.

The University of Illinois (U of I) Extension can help with information about the latest legislation concern-

ing the Illinois Cottage Food Law, and how to comply with safety standards to ensure cottage food products are safe, healthy and enjoyable for all.

This class is open to farmers market coordinators, current vendors, potential vendors and others interested in cottage food operations.

The Illinois Cottage Food Law Update Class will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, at the LaSalle City Hall, 745 Second St. in LaSalle.

Attendees will go home with a copy of the updated Illinois Cottage Food
