Hennepin to spend $110,000 on street fixes Village gets report about its sidewalks

HENNEPIN — In the future, whether on foot or behind the wheel, Hennepin residents will be more likely to find their paths easier to travel, thanks to the recent work of the village board and from the assistance provided by the North Central Illinois Council of Governments.

“I’d do as much as you can afford to do because of the low asphalt costs,” village engineer Bill Shafer advised during the April 18 Hennepin Village Board meeting in regards to potential street repairs.

The board approved the street committee’s recommendation to spend not more than $110,000 on street repairs this year. The village will be using a combination of investment profits, as advised by the village’s finance committee, to fund the work.

On the foot traffic side of Hennepin’s infrastructure, a presentation of the Rural Sidewalk Assessment was made by Molly Breslin of the North Central lllinois Council of Governments.

The assessment was funded through a grant from IDOT and included a map of the village’s sidewalks and their condition, as well as the areas where sidewalks are non-existent.

Breslin’s report also included funding options and a variety of policy and planning recommendations.

“It’s been shown that when communities build sidewalks, they get used. They’ll improve your residents’ mobility, health, safety and social interactions, and it also helps with economic development and the environment,” Breslin said.

The assessment additionally showed Hennepin has 17,216 feet of sidewalks. Of that amount, only

Hennepin village engineer 6,826 feet are rated as “good” or “excellent,” 9,814 feet of Hennepin’s sidewalks are classified as in “fair” condition, with the remaining 575 feet rated as “poor.”

Other features of the report show there are nine hazards caused by uneven surfaces, five areas where there are tree obstructions, 47 ramps, and an additional 31 places where there could possibly be a ramp or curb cut-out to improve access.

“This report is to give you a planning tool to help you prioritize your resources and to help make your village as accessible as possible for

your residents,” Breslin said.

In other board news:

• The board selected from three road sign options, and the first signs to be replaced will be those along the village’s most highly traveled streets. Following those, the most-faded signs will be replaced gradually over the upcoming years as the village is able, according to Village President Kevin Coleman.

• The board approved donations of $100 each to the Boo Milby Alzheimer’s 5K; the Avengers Reunion; and the Marshall-Putnam Fair Queen Pageant.

• The board approved $2,500 for Shafer to conduct the preliminary engineering work to improve the three locations of riverfront stairs.

• The board approved $3,850 to make electrical repairs and upgrades to the fountain in Hazel Marie Boyle Park.

• The board presented the Adam and Ida Deck scholarship awards to Emma Cyr and Cameron Colby.

Roots have run deep for a century

Mattern family receives Centennial Farm honors

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com MAGNOLIA — There’s no way to know what Theodore Rott might have thought about the long-term future of the land he purchased in 1914, but he would no doubt be proud to know his descendants have continued to share his love of the family farm.

George and Margy Mattern are the current caretakers of the original 170 acres bought by Rott, who arrived in the United States from Germany at the age of 25 in 1892.

“He started the farm when he was 46, and that takes a lot of courage, in my opinion,” George Mattern said.

Now the fourth generation on the farm, the Mattern family recently received the honor of being named one of Illinois’ Centennial Farms.

This Illinois Department of Agriculture program celebrates families who have worked across several generations to continue to operate family farms. In order to qualify for this designation, a farm must have been owned by the same family’s lineal or collateral descendants for at least a 100 years.

and he reminisced about the times when small family farms were more common.

• FARM Continued from Page 4 “There were all kinds of small farms back then, and their houses were filled with children. Everyone had livestock, and there was a real sense of community. Now we’re few and far between, and the average age of farmers has also gotten older,” he said.

George said his great-grandfather and grandfather farmed with horses, but the family has since been dedicated to Case equipment.

A major change to the farm occurred in 1992 when George built the first of three buildings that now house approximately 5,500 hogs.

The hogs also provide an economical source of fertilizer for the family’s corn, soybean and occasional wheat crops.

“I built the hog barns for stability

down the road and to make it a viable operation,” George said.

When asked about the deep connection he feel to his family’s land, he didn’t hesitate to answer.

“I feel I’m a part of something bigger, a link in the chain, and I want to keep the legacy going and honor my ancestors,” George said.

Although George and Margy said their four children have been encouraged to pursue their own dreams, the likelihood of another generation working the family’s land isn’t without promise.

The day of the interview, George was working the fields, much like his ancestors did over the past century.

“It’s a great privilege to be able to continue what my great-grandfather, grandfather and father did. I feel like they’re out here with me,” he said before climbing back into his tractor.

GRANVILLE — Rhonda Lynn Hartnett, 61, of Granville passed away Friday, April 27, 2018, at Aperion Care in Spring Valley.

She was born Aug. 10, 1956, in Sandwich to Dale and Iola (Huggard) Smith. She married Paul Hartnett.

She graduated from Plano High School in the class of 1974. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Hartnett of Granville; her father-in-law, Robert Stangland, and her mother-in-law, Betty Stangland, both of Morris; two sons, Craig Killebrew of Milwaukee, Wis., and Dylan Hartnett of Rockville, Texas; one daughter, Heather Shawl of Oswego; and two brothers, Ron Smith of Florida and Russel Smith of Waterman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, Tim Stangland; and her granddaughter, Karlyn Killebrew.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Attacks on newspapers must be rebuffed We oppose efforts to remove important information from newspapers and trade barriers that are costing people their jobs, and urge all of our elected officials to do the same.

n February 2017, President Donald Trump used his personal Twitter account to declare “The FAKE NEWS media … is the enemy of the American people.”

This president’s campaign to destroy the Fourth Estate has not been only bluster. The Trump administration and those who seek to emulate them are doing what they can to attack and weaken press organizations — newspapers in particular.

Begin with a tariff of as much as 32 percent on Canadian newsprint, instituted at the behest of a single American paper mill based in Washington state. This bit of “America First” protectionism will benefit a handful of paper suppliers while crippling, and possibly bankrupting, newspapers around the country.

Already, people are losing their jobs. The Tampa Bay Times, one of

the country’s 10 largest newspapers and a winner of 12 Pulitzer Prizes, announced recently that it was laying off about 50 people as a result of the higher cost of newsprint. More job losses will follow, we fear.

Another attack on newspapers — and on the public’s right to know — comes from those who want to remove the requirement that legal notices be published in local newspapers. They argue that taking legal notices out of newspapers and simply requiring they be posted on local government websites will save money, though we have yet to see convincing evidence of this.

Citizens are entitled to this information and should not have to work to find it. That’s why for years, local governments have been required to present it to their constituents in the pages of a local news outlet, and on the searchable online database, PublicNoticeIllinois.com, to ensure

it is accessible to all.

Making legal notice posting the domain of local government will lead to non-compliance.

A recent audit conducted by the Citizens Advocacy Center studied over 750 public body websites in Illinois, and the results proved to be nothing short of a digital disaster.

In cases where local governments are required by law to post information on their websites, only 73 percent complied with a requirement to post notice of upcoming meetings, 57 percent posted proposed meeting agendas, and less than half complied with posting approved minutes.

Local governments themselves know how to best communicate with the people they serve. When there is information they want publicized, they don’t simply post it on their websites or Facebook page – they contact the local newspaper.

Spring Valley native honored by Amboy High To the editor: Retired Amboy High School Principal James Braida was honored recently when the high

school auditorium was named in his honor.

About 100 former students, friends, family and community members gathered in the Amboy James High School mall Braida to celebrate with Braida as the sign bearing his name was unveiled outside of the auditorium entrance.

Jim served as principal of AHS for 25 years from 1968 to 1993 and as a teacher for the previous eight years.

Jim is a Spring Valley native, graduating in the Hall High School class of 1951.

He and his family were humbled but proud to receive this great honor.

Grants Available The Village of Hennepin would like to remind Putnam County graduating Seniors that grants are still available. The Hennepin Vocational Grant provides a grant of $1200 for first place, $1000 for second place and $800 for third place. Applicants must live in Hennepin Township.

Deadline for submitting the application is August 1st.

In addition, Kenney grants are also available with a one-time award of $500. No limit of recipients. Applications must be received no later than 90 days after the student begins their first year of study beyond High School. Applicant must reside in the Village of Hennepin.

Boys, girls track teams place second in Tri-County GRANVILLE — Putnam County boys and girls track teams both placed second in the Tri-County Conference meet on April 23.

Girls

Putnam County girls team scored 137 points to also only trail Lowpoint-Washburn (169). Other teams’ scores were Henry-Senachwine (103), Peoria Christian (56), Ottawa Marquette (26) and Flanagan-Cornell (18).

First-place finishers for the girls were Lindsey DiazDeLeon in the 800 meters (2:41.52) and long jump (15-4.25), Olivia Lawley in the 100 meter hurdles (17.99), and Madi Keegan in the discus (111-5).

Second-place finishers for the girls were Lindsey DiazDeLeon in the 400 meters (1:07.98), Olivia Lawley in the 300 meter hurdles (51.32), the 4x400 meter relay team of Emily Walker, Madi Keegan, Sophia Harris and Olivia Lawley (4:47.82), the 4x800 meter relay team of Megan Brooker, Annie Sabotta, Katrien Holocker and Sophia Harris (12:47.99), and Molly Boyd in the shot put (29-8).

Third-place finishers for the girls were Katrien Holocker in the 100 meter hurdles (19.28) and the 300 meter hurdles (55.18), the 4x100 meter relay team of Olivia Lawley, Annie Sabotta, Madi Keegan and Izzy Thompson (58.37), the 4x200 meter relay team of Izzy Thompson, Annie Sabotta, Katrien Holocker and Sophia Harris (2:08.35), and Lindsey DiazDeLeon in the triple jump (32-2.25).

Fourth-place finishers for the girls were Emily Walker in the 400 meters (1:12.32), Sophia Harris in the high jump (4-6), Madi Keegan in the triple jump (29-7), and Becky Ramey in the shot put (28-6).

Fifth-place finishers for the girls were Izzy Thompson in the 200 meters (31.25), and Emily Walker in the 800 meters (2:47.16).

Sixth-place finishers for the girls were Annie Sabotta in the 200 meters (31.77), Megan Brooker in the 1600 (6:59.02), Katrien Holocker in the high jump (4-0), Teagan Pantenburg in the 3200 meters (15:35.87), and Becky Ramey in the discus (56-5.25).

Other athletes who competed were Megan Wiesbrock (seventh in the 100 meters in 17.62), Teagan Pantenburg (eighth in the 1600 meters in 7:06.76), Megan Brooker (seventh in the 3200 meters in 16:25.24), and Emily Walker (seventh in the long jump 11-10.75).

Second-place finishers for the boys were Josh Mattingly in the 1600 meters (5:58.26), Clay Newsome in the 300 meter hurdles (57.87), the 4x200 meter relay team of Sami Khouaja, Joseph Mecagni, Mic Voss and Kaleb Wright (1:47.37), the 4x400 meter relay team of Sami Khouaja, Ian Woitynek, Nolyn Thompson and Jacob Williams (4:03.91), and Kaleb Wright in the discus (104-0).

Third-place finishers for the boys were Joseph Mecagni in the 200 meters (26.36), Mike Dzier-

zynski in the 400 meters (57.29), Jacob Williams in the 800meters (2:27.75), the 4x800 meter relay team of Wes Grimshaw, Jacob Williams, Ian Woitynek and Josh Mattingly (11:07.76), and Ian Woitynek in the triple jump (33-6).

Fourth-place finisher for the boys was Joseph Mecagni in the shot put (39-2).

Fifth-place finishers for the boys were the 4x100 meter relay team of Sami Khouaja, Alex Judd, Mic Voss and Joseph Mecagni (53.36), Mic Voss in the high jump (4-8),and Ian Woitynek in the long jump (16-4.25).

Sixth-place finishers for the boys were Sami Khouaja in the 100 meters (13.72), Kaleb Wright in the 200 meters (27.53), Wes Grimshaw in the 800 meters (2:45.80) and 1600 meters (6:19.27), Jacob Williams in the long jump (16-0.75), and Nolyn Thompson in the triple jump (30-10.5).

Other athletes who competed were Alex Judd in the 100 meters (ninth in 14.96), and Caden Smith in the 400 meters (10th in 1:11.86).

GIRLS TRACK

Lady Panthers beat Hall, Henry-Midland and Princeton at quad SPRING VALLEY — The Putnam County Lady Panthers won the Hall quadrangular on April 26 with 82 points to beat host Hall (64), Henry-Midland (57) and Princeton (29).

First-place finishers were Olivia Lawley in the 100 meter hurdles in 17.59 and the 300 meter hurdles in 54.31, Lindsey DiazDeLeon in the 800 meter run in 2:38.85 and the long jump with a leap of 14.09, the 4x400 meter relay team of Emilee Walker, Madi Keegan, Annie Sabotta and Lindsey DiazDeLeon in 4:47.06, and

Madi Keegan in the discus with a throw of 103-03.

Second-place finishers were Katrien Holocker in the 100 meter hurdles in 17.71 and the 300 meter hurdles in 54.46, the 4x200 meter relay team of Izzy Thompson, Annie Sabotta, Madi Keegan and Emilee Walker in 2:02.90, and Izzy Thompson in the 200 meter dash in 30.43.

Third-place finishers were Olivia Lawley in the 200 meter dash in 31.11, and Molly Boyd in the shot put with a throw of 28.05.

ANNAWAN — The Putnam County girls track team placed fourth with 86 points while the boys track team placed fifth with 61 points at the A and W Titan Invite on April 27.

First-place finishers were Katrien Holocker in the 300 meter low hurdles in 51.40 and the 100 meter hurdles in 17.58, Luke Griffith in the shot put (43-2) and the discus (133-0) and Lindsey DiazDeLeon in the long jump (15-9).

Marshall-Putnam 4-H Federation is seeking blood donors

Call Extension office by Friday to be included on list HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam 4-H Federation would like to continue to sponsor a blood drive during the 4-H Show in July.

The blood drive was started in honor of several 4-H Alumni who were in a serious car accident several years ago, requiring a blood transfusion during their recovery. The blood drive is a great way to recognize the 4-H alumni as well as provide support

for the American Red Cross.

Over the last few years the amount of blood donors has subsided at the event.

In order to continue this tradition, the American Red Cross is requiring in advance a list of committed donors. If the minimum number of donors is met, the blood drive will take place during the 4-H show the week of July 16-19 at the Marshall Putnam Fairgrounds.

Chief Senachwine chapter of NSDAR celebrates first organized meeting HENRY — The celebration and first organized meeting of the Chief Senachwine chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was called to order on April 8 at the First Presbyterian Church in Henry by Illinois State Regent Gloria Flathom. Preceding the opening gavel was a musical call to the meeting, played by Organizing Regent Nancy Gillfillan on a Native American flute. Her melody was based on a tune created by the four-times great-grandson of Chief Senachwine.

The pledge to the flag of the United States of America was led by Shelia Schrowang, chapter flag chairman. Barbara Peterson, chapter American history chairman, led the American’s Creed, and Carrie Schwiderski treated the audience by singing “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Donna Benshoof, Illinois state organizing secretary, welcomed the attendees to the celebration and meeting. The national President General’s Message was read by Nancy Gillfillan, followed by installation of officers

by Flathom. Diana Williamson, chapter chaplain, offered a prayer.

A brief business meeting followed with Gillfillan introducing speakers Flathom, Benshoof and Patricia Holcomb, District II director. Debra Coe, state historian, brought greetings. Flathom presented a ribbon and chapter

regent’s pin to Gillfillan. An engraved gavel and block were given to the chapter by the Illinois State Organization. A set of flags for use at meetings was presented by the Asa Cottrell chapter, and an engraved flag base was given by District Director Holcomb.

Congratulatory notes from honorary state regents, chapters and friends were read by corresponding secretary Carrie Schwiderski.

A proposed budget was adopted by the membership as well as the Chief Senachwine bylaws. Officers reported: Sharon Bittner, registrar, on the status of charter members and their applications; Dolores Dace, vice regent, on a meeting to plan events for 201819; and Williamson on upcoming DAR events.

The next meeting will be held at the Meeting Place in Henry at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 5. Prospectives are invited to attend.

The program, presented by Sharon Bittner, is titled “It’s Not Your Gramma’s Hat and White Gloves Group Anymore.”

The meeting closed with all singing “America the Beautiful” led by Carrie Schwiderski followed by a benediction by Williamson. Refreshments were served to those who attended to share in celebrating the establishment of this 105th DAR chapter in Illinois.

HENRY — River Valley Players Summer Youth Theatre has announced audition dates for “Disney My Son Pinocchio JR!.” This show is partially funded with a grant from The Sun Foundation and The Illinois Arts Council.

Auditions will be a 4 p.m. Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6, at River Valley Players, located inside St John XXIII Center, 1301 Second St. in Henry. Auditions are open to all children between the ages of 5 and 15.

During the auditions, the children will be taught the song “I’ve Got No Strings” from the musical. This song will be posted on the River Valley Players event page, so the children may prepare in advance. After the vocal audition, they will be taught a short dance combination and will perform in groups. Lastly, each child will be allowed to read from the script and showcase their acting skills.

Children should come dressed in comfortable clothes and shoes that will allow them to dance and move easily (no flip flops).

Production dates will be July 20-22.

MAGNOLIA — On Monday, April 9, members of the Magnolia Township Preservation Association and friends sat down with guest Becky Richards-Siegman to reminisce about life in Putnam County. Light refreshments were served. Her visit celebrated the dedication of the newly installed platform lift, making the building ADA compliant.

This project was made possible through the open-hearted support of community donors and a very gener-

ous bequest from charter board member Eleanor McCoy’s estate. Work is in progress to finish making the parking lot ADA compliant thanks to the donations of materials and labor by area businesses.

The MTPA will present a program on The Underground Railroad at 1 p.m. May 5 in the community room.

Free summer conferences on empowerment offered for teens

across the globe, “SCREENAGERS” is the first feature documentary to explore the impact of screen technology on kids and offer parents and families proven solutions that work. What started out as a personal story has grown into a national movement, helping millions of teens and their families navigate growing up in the world with instant access to screens.

Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston decided to make “SCREENAGERS” when she found herself constantly struggling with her two kids about screen time. Ruston felt guilty and confused, not sure what limits were best, especially around mobile phones, social media, gaming and how to monitor online homework.

Hearing repeatedly how other parents were equally overwhelmed, she realized this is one of the biggest, unexplored parenting issues of our time.

As a director, Ruston turned the camera on her own family and others — revealing stories of messy struggles over social media, video games, academics and Internet addition. We meet Hannah, a 14-year old victim of social media bullying who struggled trying to hide her social media use from her mom. And Andrew, whose love of video games turned into an addiction taking him from earning straight A’s to flunking out of college.

Interwoven into these stories, are cutting edge science and insights from thought leaders Peggy Orenstein, Sherry Turkle, Simon Sinek, as well as leading brain scientists who present evidence on the real changes in the brain when kids are on screens. “SCREENAGERS” goes far beyond exposing the risks of screen time, it reveals multiple approaches on how parents and educators can work with kids to help them achieve a healthy amount of screen time.

Junior Achievement representatives speak to Rotary members GRANVILLE — Putnam County Rotarian Darlene Friedrich Coleman hosted Junior Achievement representatives Cassie Druhl and Dawn Camlin at the club’s April 12 meeting.

Her guests shared the diverse education and experience they offer to students.

Founded in 1919 by AT&T President Theodore Vail, Strathmore Paper President Horace Moses, and Sen. Murray Crane of Massachusetts, JA is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. JA is non-profit, funded primarily by donations from larger industries and manufacturers.

With the support of her employer, Matt Hostetter and

Country Financial, Coleman regularly volunteers her time as a JA educator and mentor, joining several other area volunteers, whose efforts are greatly appreciated. The speakers stressed, however, that many more volunteers will be needed as JA’s reach expands.

As summarized by both guest speakers, JA is dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, handson programs. The local affiliate covers 24 counties in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin, serving over 57,000 students with just 20 paid staff and some 300 volunteers.

Covered Bridge Chorus is preparing Stonier scholarship applications for upcoming performances will be accepted until May 31 PRINCETON — The Covered Bridge Chorus is preparing for a performance at the LaSalle Veterans Home at 2 p.m. June 10. They will then drive to Heritage Health Center and perform for the residents there. Plans are also underway for the annual show on Oct. 21.

Several visitors have attended practices recently. Visitors are always welcomed. Everyone is invited to try singing four-part, close harmonies and see what a joy

and challenge it can be.

The Covered Bridge Chorus is a men’s chorus made up of members from the communities of Tiskilwa, Sheffield, Kewanee, Peru, Lacon, Chillicothe Princeton, Malden, New Bedford and Tampico. A cappella music in the Barbershop Harmony style is sung. Practices are in the Prouty Building on South Main Street in Princeton. The chorus meets from 7 to 9:30 p.m. every Tuesday night.

GRANVILLE — Applications are now available for the I.F. Doug Stonier and Ella Stonier Education Trust which provides for awarding college scholarships to a number of college students for the school year commencing in August.

To be eligible, each student must have resided in the township of Granville, Hennepin or Magnolia, Putnam County, for a period of three years prior to the award of a

scholarship.

The scholarships will be awarded on a basis of educational capability and financial need to students working toward a bachelor’s degree who are entering their third or fourth year of college.

Applications for a scholarship may be picked up at the Granville National Bank in Granville. Completed applications will be accepted no later than Wednesday, May 31.
