Reconstruction work moving along on $25 million I-180 bridge project Half of interstate bridge closed this year, half next year

for complete bridge deck replacement, pavement restructuring and replacement of the approach.

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media HENNEPIN — Work is moving along quickly on the $25 million reconstruction of bridge deck that carries Interstate 180 traffic high above the Illinois River between Putnam County and Bureau County.

But that doesn’t mean the project will be over soon.

Crews have been making repairs on the half-century-old I-180 bridge sporadically for the past several years, and now pretty much all but the supports needs to be rebuilt.

Nate Sell, construction field engineer for IDOT, noted this winter that the project will last three years, though motorists will see the biggest effects in 2020 and 2021.

All four lanes share the supports and piers. This year, the crew is rebuilding the eastbound (south) half, and next year, workers will rebuild the westbound (north) half.

Pritzker did make things clear as he mentioned the gradual reopening of certain things across the state, such as golf courses with many restrictions on May 1. For one, COVID-19 spread is not at its peak. Second, people should continue physical distancing, and masks should be worn by all, including children older than 2, in public places where social distancing is difficult. Third, the governor can order sites and sectors closed if people abuse their freedoms and spread the disease.

“If I start to see crowds,” Pritzker said, “I will need to bring back these restrictions.”

Conservation police Sgt. Phil Wire said the Illinois and Michigan Canal and Shabbona Lake are on the list for reopening for daytime hours only, as well as the Rock Island Trail, a pedestrian link in a residential area near Peoria.

The Hennepin Canal Parkway and Buffalo Rock were not on the initial reopening list.

Those parks will be open from sun-up to sundown. Guests will be allowed to engage in activities such as wildlife observation, hiking, biking, equestrian use and fishing (both from the bank and boats), as well as mushroom hunting.

Bureau-Putnam-Marshall health chief recovers from virus, returns to work

Congress should provide relief to beneficial nonprofits like the Alzheimer’s Association

Members of Better Fishing Association of Northern Illinois want to teach children how to fish, how to tie knots and a little bit about the environment around them and safety in the outdoors.

But area youngsters will miss out on a oneday educational and recreational experience put on by the BFA, Department of Natural Resources and other helpers this May. “The Better Fishing Association members, after conferring by telephone, have agreed that it is not possible to run our Baker Lake Fishing Expo that had been scheduled for May 16, 2020,” BFA President Barry Welbers stated.

“The restrictions imposed as a result of the COVID-19 virus are the cause. As a group, we are disappointed. We plan to restore the program in 2021.”

At this time, the BFA members still hope to run the Lock 14 fishing tournament on June 6 at LaSalle.

“We will be closely following the progress of our battle with the virus and the health safety regulations that are in place as the time approaches,” Welbers wrote in an email on April 17.

Hector Gomez, administrative director of the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments, has recovered from symptoms related to COVID-19, and he returned to his duties at the health department on April 27.

Gomez is one of nine Bureau County residents to have tested positive for COVID-19 and one of seven who has recovered.

As a volunteer advocate, the Alzheimer’s Association is important to me because it is a way to help people with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

My mother, Grace Whitten, suffered from vascular dementia, which eventually took her from us in September of 2018. She lived with us for 3 1/2 years, and there was very little support and education for family members trying to help our loved ones navigate through such a difficult time.

The Alzheimer’s Association has been instrumental in passing legislation to help families like mine.

With that being said, I understand many nonprofit organizations, including the Alzheimer’s Association, have been severely financially impacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and have not been included in a relief package by the federal government. Therefore, I am asking that my representative, Adam Kinzinger, expand nonprofit access to credit to support nonprofit employers with between 500 and 10,000 employees in the next COVID-19 relief package.

I can’t imagine another family having to face challenges due to Alzheimer’s or a related dementia without having the support, programs and resources of the Alzheimer’s Association, like my family experienced.

To continue our fight to end Alzheimer’s, our nation’s most expensive and devastating disease, please join me in encouraging Congressman Kinzinger to consider the millions of Illinois families that depend on nonprofits like the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dr. Matthew Johll wins teacher excellence award OGLESBY — Longtime Illinois Valley Community College chemistry instructor and textbook author Dr. Matthew Johll of Granville recently won Illinois Valley Community College’s 2020 Stephen Charry Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence.

Known affectionately to students as “Doc Johll,” he has been the college’s Chem Club adviser all 16 of his years at the college. Under his leadership, the club has consistently earned “Outstanding” designations from the American Chemical Society.

By introducing case studies, Johll’s textbooks have changed the way introductory chemistry courses are taught. He also successfully blends the science from crime scenes into his curriculum.

A frequent presenter at national conferences, Johll is renowned for his ability to help students understand the relevancy of chemistry in their lives. His presentations have included: • Turning to Crime: Using case studies to teach chemistry; • Real Crimes, Real Chemistry: True cases that feature the analysis

of physical evidence by forensic chemists; and • The good, the bad and the ugly: Using the chemistry found in movies, television programs, newspaper stories and the internet for class discussions.

Outside IVCC, Johll is a forensic chemistry consultant currently working with the LaSalle County coroner to identify a victim in a 1991 cold case. He is also working with a criminal case review commission in Birmingham, England, on an appeal for what Johll believes is a woman unjustly convicted by poor scientific analysis of evidence.

He was part of a BBC documentary on a similar case in Glasgow, Scotland, where a nurse was wrongly convicted of murdering five patients.

Johll earned the Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Iowa State University and the bachelor’s in chemistry (magna cum laude) from the University of Wisconsin at Platteville.

In 2011, UW Platteville named him Outstanding Educator/Researcher for the Engineering, Mathematics and Science Alumni Chapter.

DAR chapter postpones May meeting to June 5

Dr. Matthew Johll In 2017, he won the National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, Boy Scouts of America, for excellence in professional achievements.

As the Charry award winner, Johll is IVCC’s nominee for the Illinois Community College Trustees Association’s 2020 Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Member Award.

The winner will be announced June 5 in Chicago. Johll was nominated for the Charry by student Brenden Gibson of Ottawa.

HENRY — The regularly scheduled meeting of the Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR set for Friday, May 1, has been postponed to Friday, June 5. The meeting will be held at the Henry Library.

During the June meeting, the chapter will rededicate the grave and marker of Elizabeth Wikoff at the Henry Cemetery.

Wikoff is the daughter of Revolutionary War soldier, John Bainbridge, who served in the New Jersey militia. Also being honored will be Elizabeth’s son, Peter Wikoff, who served from Henry during the Civil War in the Illinois infantry (1862-1865).

Also honored will be Peter’s daughter, Elizabeth Wikoff Dewey, who was a charter member of the Christopher Lobingier DAR Chapter, the predecessor of the Chief Senachwine Chapter. Dewey served as chapter regent and on the state committee for Ellis Island and attended the National Congress in Washington, D.C., in 1929.

GRANVILLE — Jacob Anthony Davis, 26, of Granville, died unexpectedly on April 22, 2020, in Peoria.

Jacob was born in Ottawa on January 31, 1994, son of Lonnie Davis of Peoria and Janet Khouaja of Granville.

He is survived by two brothers, Sami Khouaja of Granville and Alonzo (Olivia) Khouaja of DeKalb; one niece, Elowyn Khouaja of DeKalb; paternal grandparents, Lonnie and Sharon Davis of Peoria; maternal grandparents, Jim and Sharon Farson of Serena; three uncles, Mark and Jason Davis of Peoria and Jeff Farson of Naperville; one aunt, Loreece Hightower of Peoria; two beautiful children of his own, Violet, age 5, and Jacob Jr., age 1.

He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Jeannette Pacheco.

Jacob will be remembered for his cooking, his beautiful art work, infectious laugh, his fondness for movies and video games, and his adventurous and untamed spirit. He was a loyal father who enjoyed playing with and entertaining his two young children. He belonged to a tight-knit, faith-filled family and will be missed by all.

The program recently received a 2020 Case IH Magnum 340 tractor, Case IH 335 vertical tiller and Case IH 2150 Early Riser planter.

Access to the tractor and tiller was facilitated by Stoller International of Ottawa and the planter by Case IH Planter Research in Burr Ridge.
