Putnam County Board denies owner-occupied exemption request from rental owner

HENNEPIN — A request received by Putnam County Supervisor of Assessments Tammy Mehalic asking rental property owners be allowed to claim owner-occupied exemptions has been denied by the Putnam County Board.

During the April 17 meeting, which was

a continuation of the suspended April 10 meeting, the board reached a decision to keep the criteria of the exemption as it is.

The idea behind the request was a rental owner would receive the $6,000 exemption, and then have the renter pay the associated property taxes. It’s assumed the renter would also have shared in the savings by having a lower rent.

Mehalic has previously said the deci-

sion was up to the county, and some counties allow it while others don’t.

At a previous meeting Mehalic also said there would be additional paperwork; the property’s EAV would be affected; the county would have to track the renter’s payments; and the county would lose $6,000 in revenue with each exemption.

The North Central Illinois Council of Government (NCICG) sent Kendall Cramer to the April 19 village board meeting to present the Rural Sidewalk Assessment Program, and the board approved a resolution in support of it. Using funds provided through Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the NCICG will be evaluating the sidewalks of 13 area communities with populations of less than 5,000 to assess where walkways can be improved.

Electrical upgrades Trustee Quentin Buffington gave a high-end estimate of approximately $10,900 for the electrical upgrade supplies for the improvements to Walter Durley Boyle park and an additional $2,000 to $3,000 for the labor to make the connections.

He said the village will perform as much of the work as possible to help limit the costs, and the work should be completed before the Fourth of July celebrations.

Texting alerts Trustee Matt Dean proposed an idea for the village to subscribe to a texting service which could alert residents to important developments such as utility outages or other local concerns.

“This wouldn’t be for ordinance violations but to alert residents to things like fire, health, water,

electrical, emergency management, fertilization and road issues which could affect their daily lives,” Dean said.

The village will be conducting research to evaluate the level of interest residents have in such a service in order to decide which plan would suit the village best.

In other board news The bicentennial committee requested $4,000 to meet the costs of the upcoming village celebration. The board also discussed the financing of a possible river boat visit to Hennepin.

The board decided who will be named the Citizen of the Year; he official announcement will come at a later date.

The Deck Scholarships were awarded to Owen Mallery and Jon Sabotta.

Donations of $100 were approved to the Voluntary Action Center, the Starved Rock Community Foundation and the M-P County Fair. A donation of $1,100 was also made to The PCEF.

Granville still undecided on drug and alcohol policy

Popurella told the board he had drafted three versions of a new drug and alcohol policy for village employees after the board was previously in dispute over how strict the new policy should be.

He said the first version was what was initially presented, a zero tolerance policy which would include termination for a first offense.

The second version presented was much like the first, although it would allow an appeal to the board within seven days if there was a termination.

“The third version allows for a step program. It’s zero tolerance on a regular work shift, .04 on a call-out. The first offense allows for treatment; the second offense requires treatment; and the third offense is termination; and that’s on a rolling 36-month period,” Popurella said.

The same disputes arose as at the previous meetings, with trustee Tina Dolder wanting a zero tolerance policy and trustee Randy Borio recommending more flexibility.

Following the adjournment of the April 18 meeting, the board presented him with a silver pocket watch, cake, statements of appreciation and thanks, laughter and several hugs.

Also in attendance at the meeting, although not yet in an official capacity, was new board member Bob Bruch and former Granville Village Board candidates Bob Fescenmeyer and Shelby Osborne.

“It’s been a good run, and I’m thankful for having been able to work with all of the current and past board members,” Gimbal said.

DISTRACTED DRIVING AWARENESS MONTH

No one at the wheel: Targeting distracted driving

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — At 55 mph, the average text takes a driver’s eyes off the road long enough to cover the length of a football field. That means during that time, there’s essentially no one in control of the several thousand pound vehicle flying down the road at a high speed.

According to the Centers

for Disease Control (CDC), more than eight people are killed and more than a thousand are injured each day in crashes involving distracted drivers.

“Distracted driving is becoming an increasing problem, especially in youth, and texting has been at the forefront,” Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle said.

As part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, many of the state’s

law enforcement agencies have been conducting enforcement patrols in problem and high traffic areas to target violations of distracted driving.

These include texting and using a hand held cell phone or electronic communication device while operating a motor vehicle.

“Enforcement can be tough at times, but it’s enforced when we see it.

We see much more of it in

our personal vehicles than in marked squad cars. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office discusses this topic in the driver’s ed class at the high school, and we teach them the consequences, both monetarily and the driving dangers.

Most don’t realize the dangers until it’s too late,” Doyle said.

Public works Sheli Starkey, public works superintendent, reported an older storm pump at the sewer facility had possibly failed. She requested, and the board approved, $2,500 for an integrated alarm system which would connect to the department’s other building and allow for a

quicker response in the event of equipment failure.

Chief of Police Kevin Moore reported a second speaker can be added to the village’s warning system but no more. Adding more speakers would require a new system at an estimated cost of $30,000.

• The board approved Rocket Communications’ offer to begin providing Internet service to the village.

• The board also approved the contracts for EPA water testing.

• The board will soon be reviewing plans for the Veterans Park concession stand.

• The board tabled a decision to hire a third full-time police officer although interviews have been conducted.

• The spring garage sales will be held May 5-7.

• Spring clean-up in the village will begin on May 11.

IVCC adds to agriculture program Courses for new ag business management degree start in fall OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s revitalized agriculture program took another significant step on April 13 with board approval of an AAS degree in agricultural business management.

The two-year Associate in Applied Science degree, developed with input from district ag leaders, includes five new courses and revisions to two current courses. New courses include Introduction to the Agricultural Industry, Introduction to Precision Agriculture, Agriculture Marketing, Agricultural Credit and Finance and Advanced Agricultural Business Management.

Having met all requirements leading up to formal approval of the new program by the Illinois Community College Board, students can enroll in the new courses now as fall registration began April 11.

Ag program instructor and coordinator Willard Mott said, the program also includes a “robust internship program with local agri-businesses — an opportunity which could lead to immediate, post-IVCC employment.

“We already have several students with ag internships,” he added.

In other business, the board moved to terminate an inter-district agreement with Joliet Junior College that allowed split-district high school students to attend either IVCC or JJC at in-district rates regardless of residency.

It is estimated IVCC lost $30,000 in revenue due to this agreement.

LASALLE — Illinois State Police (ISP) officials are announcing the arrest of Matthew Curtis Remling, 48, of Sacramento, Calif., for trafficking of a controlled substance and other felony charges.

On Wednesday, April 12, at approximately 12:36 p.m., an ISP trooper stopped a vehicle driven by Remling for an equipment violation on Interstate 80,

ISP releases March activity report LASALLE — Illinois State Police District 17 announced that during the month of March, troopers handled 1,206 calls for service and assistance. Of these calls, 154 were to help motorists whose vehicles were disabled on area highways.

Criminal activities during the month included no persons arrested on outstanding warrants and 12 arrests for other criminal offenses.

Traffic enforcement activities resulted in 184 drivers arrested for speeding and 39 cited for seat belt violations.

LASALLE — Illinois State Police District 17 Commander Victor Markowski announced his force will be participating in the inaugural Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week.

Troopers will be giving special attention to distracted driving laws the week of April 24-28.

Illinois Distracted Driving laws have been in effect for seven years. Motorists need to be aware of the laws and obey them – to avoid getting a ticket, and to avoid causing an injury or fatal crash.

The use of wireless telephones for all drivers, regardless of age, while operating a vehicle in a school zone or construction zone is prohibited. Also, the

use of electronic communication devices or any other electronic device to text, e-mail, compose, read or send electronic messages or access Internet sites while driving a motor vehicle is prohibited.

Violating Illinois’ texting law can be costly. A first violation for this offense is $120 and can increase with multiple violations or when a violation occurs in a work or school zone.

Distracted Driving is a nationwide epidemic. Driver inattention is a factor in more than one million crashes annually, resulting in serious injuries, deaths and an economic impact that the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says reaches nearly $40 billion per year.

Driving under the influence arrests totaled 10, while 10 apprehensions for other alcohol-related offenses were recorded. Troopers issued a total of 375 traffic citations and 459 written warnings to motorists during the month.

Troopers and weight inspectors issued five citations for overweight violations.

District 17 troopers handled 38 traffic crashes within the three-county area of LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam. There was one fatal crash handled by District 17 troopers.

Oberweis’ bill I imperils public’s right to know Legislation to allow the dissemination of public notices only on the Internet in Illinois is a radical departure from the proven public notice system that all other states use.

As a result, the public’s right to know would suffer. The bill should be defeated.

issemination of information to citizens through publication of public notices protects the public’s right to know.

Through public notices, units of government inform the public about what they are doing or proposing which, in turn, helps the pubic effectively engage in the democratic process. The cost for public notices is minimal to each unit of government, usually less than a tenth of a percent of the budget.

Legislation that took effect five years ago goes further. The Illinois Legislature unanimously approved a bill requiring newspapers to post all public notices they print on a public, free-access centralized website at no additional cost to government. That website is PublicNoticeIllinois. com.

The system works well. Newspapers disseminate public notices and then certify that governments have complied with public notice laws.

The public is served efficiently, in print and online.

However, some people want to change it.

Senate Bill 2032 would allow units of government to bypass publishing notices in local newspapers and, instead, post public notices on their own websites or on a state-run website.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, introduced the bill in February; a Senate committee is reviewing it.

Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti is a strong supporter; a task force she headed issued a report in December 2015 that favors the concept of “modernizing public notices.”

Frankly, we are appalled by their cavalier attitude toward public notices and government transparency.

As a respected, independent third party, newspapers reliably transmit this information in print and online. Newspapers for centuries have played a key role in the legal process of public notices by publishing, certifying and archiving them. It’s a long proven process.

By contrast, government is unreliable.

The Citizens Advocacy Center reviewed Illinois local governments’ track record for posting notices online in three basic areas – public meeting notices, public meeting agendas, and approved minutes from public meetings – as required by law through the Open Meetings Act. Of more than 750 websites surveyed, only 73 percent of governments complied with posting meeting notices; 57 percent complied with posting an agenda; and a mere 48 percent complied with posting approved meeting minutes.

That’s unacceptable.

What can the public expect if local governments bypass newspapers and post public notices online?

The same dismal record of noncompliance and lawbreaking.

That would be a terrible blow to transparency.

We are unconvinced that public notices, if placed only on government-controlled websites, would have anything close to the same readership they have now.

Senate Bill 2032 is a radical departure from the proven public notice system that all other states use.

Government would inevitably become less transparent, especially for people who aren’t online.

And the public’s right to know, rather than being protected, would be diminished.

Politicians like Oberweis and Sanguinetti ought to know better.

They should realize that public notices in Illinois were “modernized” more than five years ago through legislation establishing the centralized website, which is PNI. The bill should be defeated.

Bucket List — Part 2

n case you missed the first Bucket List article, my Bucket List is the reason I have achieved goals and experienced some exciting adventures. It contains things I would like to accomplish or experience before it’s too late. And at my age, I’d best get to checking off some of these items.

I started with 1. Para sailing up at Door County; and 2. Getting a tattoo of a frog (Caleb) on my foot; then ...

Zip lining – There it was — a large ad in the newspaper – “Zip Chicago in Marseilles, Ill.” I called to make sure an old lady could do it. It was a “go.” But these things are more fun if done with a companion.

“Hey, Brad is coming home for a week in September, I’ll see if he’ll go with me.” So I called him, “Yeah, Mom, that sounds like a lot of fun,” he said. We lucked out and were the only ones zipping last Sept. 12 at our set time.

Two experienced college girls were our guides. One was at each end of the eight zip lines we went on.

They gave instructions, made sure we were hooked up properly and all was safe. I thought it would be wise to make Brad zip first. He leaped off of the first platform and disappeared into the trees. I didn’t hear a “thud,” so guessed he made over OK. We started out crossing on swinging bridges, my greatest fear. Some smart aleck invariably is in front or behind you thinking it’s funny to rock the boat, so to speak. Not

“Wow, Mom, I can’t believe what a trouper you are! You just jumped right off and went!” Brad said.

“Well, I was bound and determined to do it, so there wasn’t any sense in standing there working up a panic attack. Besides it was all paid for! And facing Jerry if I chickened out was scarier than zipping.”

From then on my main problem was keeping myself facing forward to fully enjoy each trip. I couldn’t seem to manage it. Consequently, half of each zip was backwards.

Naturally, our landings were lower than the starting point.

Between stations we had to walk up rather rugged terrain to the next launch. My sweet son always made sure he was in a position to catch me if I started sliding or rolling down.

The leader on the receiving end had a strong rope hooked on the zip cable. As we approached landing, she would run along, gradually slowing us down for a soft one. This worked well — unless you were stopped before your feet could touch the ground. One of the two longest zips was over their parking lot. Yes, my feet would have touched ground

if I had been coming in forward like most zippers. Alas, I was stretching my legs hoping my toes could at least grab a bit of soil, as I was slowly gliding back over the parking lot.

“Oh no!” I heard from the leader/ stopper. “Don’t worry. I’ll run down and get you. Just sit tight.” Like I could do anything else?

I thought she would never reach me as I was hanging there, feeling like an old worn-out pair of undies hung out to dry over their parking lot, with the harness bruising my butt. I grabbed the rope, and she climbed back up the hill, dragging me behind. Soon I was touching solid ground again.

All in all, zip lining was an unforgettable adventure made all the more special by sharing it with my adventurous, awesome son, Brad.

So what’s next on my Bucket List?

1. Zipping at Zip Chicago whetted my appetite for a longer zip with more stations – maybe in Tennessee or Jamaica; 2. A long hot air balloon trip; 3. Publishing my memoir “Buck ‘n’ Me;” and 4. ?.

e all have tough times. We will in the future. These times can bring the very best in us and also the very worse.

Yet, we persevere.

Sometimes we have bad times that are personal — sickness, financial losses and job disappointments.

Losses can leave us numb and nearly mute. Often loved ones can experience terrible events, and it affects us as well. We don’t live in a vacuum of course, and tough times can affect us in many ways. We have all learned this.

I believe that humans have been built with hope. Think about it.

Why would our far distant ancestors have bothered trying to contain fire or walking out of Africa if they had not had the notion that things would be better? Many times, we know, catastrophe caused them to move on, and there is a lesson here.

Walking behind a wagon from Missouri to the west, with all my belongings and children in tow, doesn’t look appealing to me, but

Of course, there were the “Indians” as Native Americans were called, and disease, weather and just plain unknown hazards facing them. They still hitched up and starting walking. (I think I would have told my hubby to go ahead and write me when he had found a house, garden and neighbors before I joined him.)

Anyway, hope is built in us. So, now that life has dealt a blow of some kind, we feel despair, and there seems no way to make things better.

Then someone/something begins to reveal a glimmer of light in our dim view. This glimmer usually comes from within, but a word from

a stranger or others can urge us along.

Sometimes we get angry or tired of the fix we are in. We put one foot in front of the other, do what is suggested, seek help or just listen and learn. Any nudge helps us — words, a song, or a gesture from loved ones and friends alike.

One step at a time, we get our bearings again. Slowly, positive things begin to happen, and we can see them. This is a universal truth.

We see it all the time in friends, veterans, stranger alike. People fight their way back.

We talk about strength, will and faith. All ingredients of being human. Good for us.

Thank you all for the loving encouragement I have received in the past few months.

Be kind to each other. A glimmer of hope is needed — always.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ‘Does Illinois want to be like Colorado?’

To the Editor, Illinois Family Institute (IFI) stands in strong opposition to the legalization of marijuana. For decades, authorities within our cultural institutions have recognized the many harms of marijuana use for “recreation” and intoxication.

Medical, scientific, education, law enforcement and clergy professionals worked together to warn society, especially our young people, of the dangers associated with getting high, of addiction and of life-changing consequences. These warning have not expired.

We are alarmed that certain state lawmakers from Chicago want to legalize marijuana in Illinois despite the overwhelming evidence

of adverse outcomes in Colorado and Washington state.

There are so many reasons to be concerned about marijuana legalization. Colorado is now ranked first in the nation for “past month” use for children between the ages of 12-17. This is 74 percent higher than the national average. Do we really want some of our children to be among these numbers?

There are also good reasons to be concerned about Illinois highway safety if marijuana is legalized.

In the two years after Colorado’s legalization, marijuana-related traffic deaths increased 62 percent.

A staggering 21 percent of drivers involved in all traffic fatalities in Colorado tested positive for marijuana. Do we really want this in Illinois?

In 2014, the year Colorado’s

retail marijuana businesses began operating, marijuana-related hospitalizations increased 20 percent, and emergency room visits increased 25 percent. The costs to taxpayers, as first responders and medical responses increase, are dramatic.

And we can’t ignore the relationship between marijuana use and psychotic incidents. The news has been filled with these tragedies.

Does Illinois really want to legalize a product which will only lead to a more stoned, distracted, apathetic and violent population? This policy will lead to more people buzzed at home, at construction sites, in operating rooms, in classrooms and on our roads.

The Putnam County Panthers went 2-4 in six games played last week.

Wooden Bat Tourney Putnam County scored two runs in the sixth inning of the Wooden Bat Tourney to edge Princeton 3-1 on April 21 in Hennepin. Winning pitcher Caleb Dzierzynski went 6.1 innings, striking out six, walking two and allowing two hits while Owen Mallery pitched two-thirds of an inning.

The Panthers defeated Erie-Prophetsown 6-5 April 21 in Hennepin to win the Cubs Pool. Connor Bean pitched 6.2 innings, striking out 10 and allowing four earned runs on eight hits.

Michael Kettman picked up the win, throwing 1.1 innings, striking out three and allowing two hits.

Hall, the winner of the Cardinals Pool, beat Putnam County 16-4 on April 22 in Granville in the championship game. Putnam County scored one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the seventh. Hall scored eight runs in the seventh, four in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the third and one in the first.

Luke Carlson pitched 4.1 innings to absorb the loss.

He allowed six hits and four earned runs while walking two and striking out five.

4-H Shooting Sports spring adult certification training Nothing is hotter than Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports. By summer, more than 1,000 volunteer instructors will have been certified for the program in nine years. The next opportunity to become trained is May 5-7.

Volunteers are required to complete the entire weekend training, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday until 2 p.m. Sunday. The training is held at 4-H Memorial Camp near Monticello. Certification in the following disciplines will be offered: archery,

rifle, shotgun, pistol, and hunting and outdoor. They will also offer certification in the shooting sports coordinator role. The cost is $125 per instructor, however with a commitment of volunteering for a minimum of two years, this cost will be covered by the local 4-H Shooting Sports program.

Interested volunteers must work through their local Extension office to conduct background and reference checks. No adults can attend without the approval of the local

county Extension staff. Dutch oven workshop planned for May 13 MCNABB — University of Illinois Extension Marshall-Putnam 4-H will offer a “Lovin’ Dutch Oven” workshop day beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at the Putnam County Conservation Area in McNabb.

The workshop will begin with making a breakfast casserole and end at 2 p.m. with chocolate chip cookies and a lunch in between. All items will be cooked in a Dutch oven. This event is open to all youth ages 11-18. There is a $5 fee to cover the cost of food. Registration is required by Wednesday, May 10.

SPRING VALLEY — St. Margaret’s Prenatal/Lamaze classes for expectant mothers, called “1-2-3-4 What To Expect From Labor/Delivery and More,” will begin Monday, May 1, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the First Floor Presentation Room at St. Margaret’s Hospital. June’s Got the Cash, a musical tribute, at Festival 56 PRINCETON — Walk the line with June and Johnny Cash as Festival 56 presents June’s Got the Cash at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29.

This musical show features Jenna Middleton as songbird June Carter Cash and Jonathan Lyons as the Man in Black. The tribute showcases Johnny Cash’s collection of hits over five decades, including “Jackson,” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire,” “Walk the Line” and many more.

For the last nine years, June’s Got the Cash has traveled throughout the Midwest and Canada, headlining county fairs and festivals and selling out theaters. Lead singer Middleton formed the group in 2008, and while she made “a million mistakes” at first, she says that “all of my sweat and tears have been worth the ride.” Lyons as the Man in Black shares his own talent and passion with audiences as he and Middleton bring people back to a time when music was at its all-time high. LASALLE — Director Neal Phelps has announced auditions for Stage 212’s summer 2017 production, “A Chorus Line,” the Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical by Marvin Hamlisch, Edward Kleban, James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante, will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, and at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the theater, 700 First St. in LaSalle. Call backs will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 6.

Phelps will cast eight to 10 males in principal roles of various ages up to 60; nine to 11 females in principal roles of various ages up to 50; and up to 12 roles of various ages up to 50 for the ensemble. Those auditioning must be at least a high school freshman in the fall of 2017. All auditioners must

come prepared with a 30-60 second a capella musical selection and be prepared to learn and perform a dance piece. For those interested, there will be an opportunity to perform a cold reading from the script.

Auditioners should also come prepared with all summer conflicts and availability. There can be no conflicts on performance dates.

St. Bede Auction to highlight the 125th commencement Class of 2017 bids special thanks and farewell PERU — As the 125th commencement of St. Bede quickly approaches, this historical milestone will bring hundreds to celebrate it at the St. Bede auction on Saturday, April 29. Last year the sold out auction broke an all-time record on a number of levels. This year, they look to break even more.

A special part of the evening will include students from the Class of 2017, the 125th class to graduate from St. Bede, to bid a special thanks and farewell to honor all the 124 graduating classes before them.

IVSO will present spring concert on April 30 LASALLE — The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra will present its spring concert of the 30th anniversary concert will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30, in Matthiessen Auditorium at LaSalle-Peru High School.

The soloist will be Elliott Butler, cello, the IVYSO Concerto Competition winner.

Butler is a homeschooled senior taking dual enrollment classes at Illinois Valley Community College. He has played in the Illinois Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra since the fall of 2013 and has been their principal cellist since 2014.

He was recognized by the IVYSO as “Outstanding New Student” in the 2013-14 season and “Most Improved Player” in the 2014-15 season. In the 2015-16 season his IVYSO peers selected him for the Blouke Carus Award for Outstanding Leadership and Musicianship.

He was recognized in the Shine Talent Search as a runner-up and an honoree in 2015 and 2016,

Elliott Butler respectively. In addition to playing the cello, he enjoys playing the piano, and composing and arranging music. He was selected as a finalist in the 2016 National Young Composer’s Challenge for his original composition for orchestra, “Journey to Mars.” Next year he will be studying music composition with an emphasis in cello performance at Western Illinois University.

Girls, boys track team fourth at Rollie Morris Invite

BY LYLE GANTHER Shaw Media Service The Putnam County boys and girls track team both placed fourth in the Rollie Morris Invite on April 15.

Girls place fourth The girls team tallied 63 points behind Hall (80), Amboy (90) and Bureau Valley (134) while the boys team had 62 points behind Bureau Valley (66), Streator (113) and St. Bede (126).

Lindsey DiazDeleon won the 400 meter dash (1:02.18) and the 800 meter run (2:28.24). Liv Lawley won the 300 meter hurdles (48.50) and was second

in the 100 meter hurdles (16.79). Lindsey DiazDeLeon was second in the long jump in 15-05.75 and third in the triple jump in 31-07.50.

Others who earned points for the team were Katrien Holocker (fifth in 54.27) and Madison Morrow (sixth in 55.09) in the 300 meter hurdles; the 4:400 meter relay team of Liv Lawley, Ema Cyr, Emilee Walker and Madi Keegan fourth in 4:38.97; the 4x200 meter relay team of Izzy Thompson, Emmy Cyr, Tia Green and Emilee Walker fifth in 1:58.43; and the 4x100 meter relay team of Liv Lawley, Annie Sabbota, Emma Cyr and Izzy

Thompson sixth in 54.80.

Noe Flores was second in the 800 meter run in 2:05.96 and second in the 1600 meter run: in 5:01.25.

Jon Sabotta was third in the 3200 meter run in 11:14.27. Dominic Green was fourth in the 200 meter dash in 23.56.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Noe Flores, Jimmy Hewitt, Jon Sabotta, and Mike Dzierzynski was second in 8:58.96; the 4x400 meter relay team of Dominic Green, Mike Dzierzynski, Jimmy Hewitt, and Noe Flores was third in 3:48.93, and the 4x200 meter relay team of Sami Khouaja, Nolyn Thompson, Joseph Mecagni, and Miles McCook was fourth in 1:46.22.

Dominic Green was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-7, Seth Carlson was third in the discus with a throw of 114- 5 while Luke Griffith was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 40-9 and

fourth in the discus with a toss of 113-2.

Others who competed were Jimmy Hewitt in the 100 meter dash, 16th in 12.41 and Sami Khouaja, 18th in 12.78; Ben Munson, 21st in the 200 meter dash in 29.11; Jimmy Hewitt, ninth in the 400 meter dash in 57.02; Mike Dzierzynski, 15th in the 800 meter run in 2:26.52, and eighth in the 1600 meter run in 5:47.97; Nolyn Thompson, ninth in the 110 meter hurdles in 22.09 and seventh in
