Man in his 50s is recovering at home PRINCETON — A sixth resident of Bureau County has tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19), public health officials announced in a news release Monday morning.

The individual was screened and tested by an area hospital.

Public health officials were notified of a positive test, according to

state and local public health protocol. The individual is a male in his 50s. The individual is recovering at home at this time.

Public health officials are in the beginning stages of the investigation and are working to identify individuals who were in contact with the case.

Federal privacy restrictions prohibit the release of any additional information regarding this case.

No further information regarding

the investigation is available at this time.

This is the sixth confirmed case of COVID-19 in Bureau County and the seventh in counties served by the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments. The first case was reported in Marshall County on March 23.

In Bureau County, other COVID-19 confirmed cases were reported on March 27, March 31, April 3, April 7 and April 10.

Victims of domestic abuse face more challenges Freedom House reports uptick in calls

BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media PRINCETON — Freedom House, which works to help and protect domestic violence victims in Bureau, Putnam, Marshall, Stark and Henry counties, reports an uptick in people seeking services during the coronavirus outbreak.

Tricia Schafer, Freedom House community relations manager, said over recent weeks, many more victims than usual have sought refuge at the Princeton shelter.

“We expect this increased demand for our free shelter, advocacy and counseling services to continue,” Schafer said. “Because of the social isolation seen during a pandemic, the incidence of domestic violence and sexual abuse can elevate dramatically. Our shelter is open, and we continue to provide all victim services, including counseling via telephone.”

One bit of good news, she said, is that they continue to see an outpouring of support from the communities they serve, something she is grateful for.

It’s not always easy to recognize the signs of danger, experts warn.

Stress, the disruption of social and protective networks, and decreased access to services increases the risk of violence, she said. As distancing measures are put in place and people are encouraged to stay at home, the risk of intimate partner violence is likely to increase.

The likelihood that women or men in an abusive relationship and their children will be exposed to violence is dramatically increased, as family members spend more time in close

contact and families cope with additional stress and potential economic or job losses, Shafer explained. Women or men may have less contact with family and friends who may provide support and protection from violence.

Additionally, Schafer said women bear the brunt of increased care work during this pandemic. School closures increase this burden and place more stress on them. The disruption of livelihoods and ability to earn a living, including for women (many of whom are informal wage

workers), will decrease access to basic needs and services, increasing stress on families, with the potential to increase conflicts and violence.

She said perpetrators of abuse may use restrictions due to COVID19 to exercise power and control over their partners to further reduce access to services. Perpetrators may also restrict access to necessary items such as soap and hand sanitizer. Perpetrators may exert control by spreading misinformation about the disease.

In the longer term, access to vital sexual and reproductive health services, including for victims subjected to violence, will likely become more limited. Other services, such as hotlines, crisis centers, shelters, legal aid, and protection services, may also be scaled back, further reducing access to the few sources of help that women or men in abusive relationships might have.

Schafer assured the public that they are continuing to provide counseling services via phone.

“Many of our clients are struggling,” she said. “They depend on ‘normalcy,’ routines and schedules.

Chaos is triggering for many victims and survivors of sexual assault and abuse. We are working on coping skills with all our clients. We are working with them on mindfulness techniques for stress and anxiety. We are stressing the importance of keeping routines, limiting exposure to news and social media, and staying in contact with support systems.

It was previously announced that Putnam County High School exchange student Luna Gonzalez has not yet left the U.S. to return to home to Madrid, Spain, and may decide against it at this time. Gonzalez is part of a different exchange program, International Cultural Exchange Services.

Gutierrez is being hosted by Ryan and Brandy Sandberg and family.

Brandy is Putnam County Rotary past president and also serves as village president in McNabb.

“Like Luna, she (Gutierrez) has been very active in school extracur-

Social Security leader warns of scams; hours changed Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefit payments will continue to be paid on time during the COVID-19 pandemic, the administration emphasized in a notice carrying various instructions for recipients.

The agency reminds everyone to be aware of scammers who try to take advantage of the pandemic to trick people into providing personal information or payment via retail gift cards, wire transfers, internet currency or by mailing cash, to maintain Social Security benefit payments or receive economic impact payments from the Department of the Treasury.

“Social Security will pay monthly benefits on time, and these payments will not be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Commissioner Andrew Saul said.

College staffers experiment with different designs

These heroes are making masks to protect those in need, one three-dimensional object at a time.

Illinois Valley Community College has started a project to help the world during the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s a start,” said Dorene Data, program coordinator for computer-aided design at IVCC. “Who knows how long this will go on?” she said about the coronavirus pandemic.

Data and Shane Lange, dean of workforce development, are using 3-D printers at IVCC to create masks and donate them to those in need.

“We’re looking to find people who could use them,” Data said, such as nursing homes and Illinois Veterans

There are challenges. They have three printers available to use at IVCC, but the materials take hours to print. Scheduling is difficult, too, as someone has to be there to switch out the materials.

They’re optimistic about the work they’re doing.

“At least we might help somebody,” Data said.

The duo has been in contact with JBH Technologies, which manufactures the 3D printers they’re using; JBH told the team they’re developing new things every day and gave them some more designs for masks.

“We’re working with the manufacturers to make sure we comply with all the regulations,” Data said.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS EXTENSION

Master Gardener program is now accepting online applicants

PRINCETON — For the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program, the last four decades can be measured by the millions of volunteer hours given to help bring horticultural help to communities across the state.

This year marks the 48th anniversary of the Illinois Master Gardener program. With more than 2,600 members today, Illinois Master Gardeners have given more than 2,309,348 volunteer hours — a value of over $46 million, to the state.

Today, Master Gardener volunteers — who come from farms, small towns, suburbs and cities — offer numerous educational opportunities related to gardening in nearly every county in the state.

The mission of the Illinois Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.” After 60 hours of training in topics such as vegetable and flower gardening, insect problems and plant diseases, the volunteers participate in programs throughout their communities. Some of those opportunities may include speaking at garden clubs, civic groups or schools; answering calls or emails at help desks; establishing demonstration gardens that serve as educational tools; and educating citizens on how to establish community gardens.

You don’t have to be a gardening expert to become a Master Gardener. All you need is an interest in gardening, some time to volunteer in the community, and a desire to share your knowledge with others. The program is more about connections; connecting people with other gardeners, with their community, and with reliable resources

for information. Once connections are forged, it’s time to get sowing and growing in our many meaningful community projects.

The University of Illinois Extension in Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties is now accepting applications to participate in the Online Master Gardener Training Program. This online program allows volunteers to complete the training who may have never been able to in the past due to schedule or time conflicts. This online, self-guided course for Illinois residents can be completed any time of day or night. Set aside about four hours per week for videos, reading the manual and completing quizzes, and the training will be completed in 14 weeks.

The 2020 summer Master Gardener Online Training includes 13 modules — an introduction and 12 subject-areas. Module topics include: botany; soils and fertilizers; plant diseases; entomology; integrated pest management; annuals and perennials; trees, shrubs and woody vines; lawns; small and tree fruits; vegetables; composting/ organic gardening; and living with wildlife.

Each module consists of several videos and an online quiz; therefore, a strong internet connection is highly recommended. Please note this training is not being offered in local Extension offices, but must be completed through use of a personal computer or other computer access. The registration cost for the program is $300, which includes the Master Gardener manual.

Registration for the summer 2020 class is open now through May 25, and the class will start on

June 15. Contact the Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Extension Unit for more information or to obtain materials to begin the registration process by emailing Meg E. 4-H’ers help make masks HENRY — 4-H’ers all across Marshall and Putnam counties were given a challenge while staying at home. They are taking part in a community service project to make masks to support essential workers during the COVID-19 crisis.

“Service is a big part of being a 4-H member, and this is a good time to utilize their skills or learn a new ones to benefit others,” said Anne Scheel, 4-H & Youth Development Program Coordinator for University of Illinois Extension, Marshall-Putnam counties.

Each youth who rose to the challenge was provided with materials to make two masks. They were asked to have their parents share them with members of our communities that go to work every day for the rest of us to have essentials like food, medicine, gas, etc. Those youths were encouraged to find material at home to make more if they could.

“I am very proud of how our 4-H leaders and members have taken part in this community service project,” Scheel said.

IVCC announces online summer courses OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will offer students two online options for eight-week summer courses, Vice President for Academic Affairs Deborah Anderson announced recently.

The first summer session will run May 18 to July 8; the second June 10 through Aug. 6.

“All classes, with a few exceptions primarily in career and technical education fields that require hands-on instruction, will be offered online. In addition, a threeweek online session for specific health courses will be offered,” Anderson said.

“We are responding to strong encouragement from the state to provide summer courses online.”

Summer and fall registration begins Thursday, April 16.

In other news, IVCC will forgo its traditional May 16 commencement, Vice President for Student Services Mark Grzybowski announced.

“We’ve recently made the difficult decision to suspend May commencement as the in-person event it traditionally is due to the COVID-19 outbreak. However, we are planning to do something new to honor graduates that we think will be well received,” Grzybowski said.
