GRANVILLE — The Granville Village Board has taken the final steps toward ensuring two major and long-awaited projects will be underway this summer.

During the April 3 board meeting, bids for the improvements to both the water treatment plant and McCoy Street were approved.

Village Engineer Mike Jared Baker Richetta, of Chamlin & Associates, discussed Granville both projects before village their approval. president The extensive project at the water treatment plant will result in it being fully up-to-date with standards and should be completed by September, according to Richetta. Vissering Construction Co. of Streator was awarded the job with a $552,000 bid.

The project will also now include the replacement of a variety of pipes, valves and controls that weren’t part of the initial estimates and required the village to approve an additional cost of $80,000, which will come from village funds. Approximately $373,000 for the project has been provided through grants.

“The situation isn’t going to go away or get better if we don’t do it, so I recommend this work all be done at the same time,” Richetta said.

Village President Jared Baker agreed and said it makes sense because the village has the funding available and because the plant will already be in the middle of a major project.

Richetta also said the contractor won’t be allowed to shut the plant down for more than 24 hours at a time and that the village’s 24-hour water supply should keep residents from having to worry about water availability.

McCoy Street The surprise of the meeting came from Richetta’s announcement that the bids for the McCoy Street project had come in substantially lower than expected.

“The contractors really wanted this job and were very competitive,” he said.

The project was estimated to cost $550,000, but LaSalle’s Universal Asphalt & Excavating was awarded the contract after submitting a bid of $368,231.

Richetta said because the bids were lower than expected, the contractor was also willing to possibly extend the reach of the project in both directions if the village wanted to do so.

The project was initially planned to begin at the railroad tracks and stop at Main Street. The village might now approve its continuance north along the full length of McCoy Street to end at Silverspoon Avenue and south to Route 71.

Access to McCoy Street and its businesses was discussed, and Richetta said the plan is to work on one side of the street at a time so interruptions will be limited. He also said businesses will be notified week to week as to know what to expect from the project.

In other board news • Granville has reached a verbal agreement to extend its contract to provide police services to Standard for another four years, but it won’t be officially approved until the next board meeting on April 17.

• The board approved the early pay-off of a more than $546,000 IEPA loan that funded the construction of two new wells. The village was paying $36,000 a year toward the loan and the remaining balance was approximately $203,000.

“By paying this loan off early, the village will save about $17,000 in interest, and we’ll still have a budget surplus of about $150,000,” Baker said.

• The board approved a resolution designating the Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau as Granville’s official tourism agency.

This resolution will align Granville with the surrounding communities from the six counties the Heritage Corridor represents.

• The board approved a $150 donation to the Special Olympics and $100 toward the Marshall-Putnam Fair Queen Pageant.

PUTNAM COUNTY Food service inspection scores The Bureau-Putnam County Health Department makes routine and unannounced visits each month to various food service establishments in Bureau and Putnam counties to inspect the operations.

Health inspectors use an identical scorecard at each facility, where they check for health code compliance in 45 areas. Each area carries a rating from one to five, with five being the most critical. Inspectors check the entire operations of the facility in 14 different categories, such as food protection, per-

sonnel, and garbage and refuse disposal.

Beginning with a score of 100 points, the health inspector deducts one to five points for every violation. The final total is the facility’s inspection report score. A passing food inspection score is 65 or above.

At 65, the Bureau-Putnam County ordinance allows the health department to close an establishment, but a score doesn’t have to be that low for the department to close it. It depends on the number of critical and non-critical violations and the type of violations.

Slimed for the students in need

IVCC’s Giving Day raises funds for students in need

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com OGLESBY — Athletic competitions, silly games, humor and an abundance of spirit were combined

by IVCC students, faculty, staff and community members to raise funds for students in need during the college’s second annual IVCC Giving Day. Held in the gymnasium on April 5, the event, sponsored by the IVCC Foundation to help provide financial assistance to students, was a success.

The first Giving Day raised $23,500.

Though the final numbers for the second event were still be totaled the next morning, IVCC Director of Community Relations Fran Brolley later reported the most recent raised $21,546.97 and that figure could still rise.

“This is a fun idea and a great way to bring together teachers, staff and faculty. Forty percent of our students are eligible for financial aid, so anything we can do to help them is a worthy cause,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said.

The first competition of the day, “Bucks for Baskets,” pitted faculty members Bob Reese and Tom Tunnel against former IVCC basketball players and scholarship beneficiaries Lauren Tomasson and Julie Pohar. Each team member collected pledges for each free throw they could make within three minutes.

Tunnel and Reese came out victorious in front of the cheering crowd after sinking a combined total of 44 free throws compared to Pohar and Tomasson’s 39.

The next event, the “Chukin’ Chick’n Challenge,” had Corcoran and IVCC Associate Vice President for Student Services Mark Grzybowski compete to see who could toss their rubber chicken into the farthest bucket a la the old “Bozo Buckets” game after they’d collected pledges. The contest was considered a draw after Corcoran and Grzybowski both chucked their chickens equal distances.

The “Doughnuts for Dough” contest saw Assistant Director of Admissions Aseret Loveland return to the table with student Jonathan Quintana to see who could eat

the most doughnuts in three minutes. They were joined by student Richard Nowotnik and IVCC’s Ag instructor Willard Mott who were competing for the first time.

Quintana won the competition after downing an impressive seven doughnuts to the other competitors’ four.

The “Slime Challenge” was definitely the most colorful and sloppy event of the day. IVCC Director of Admissions Quintin Overocker, IVCC Professor of Organic Chemistry Promise Yong, IVCC Psychology instructor Vince Brolley and IVCC counselor Cynthia Cardosi competed to see who could raise the most funds for the “privilege” of having slime poured over their heads.

The electric green slime was created by the school’s Chem Club students, and its main ingredients were oatmeal, applesauce and food coloring. The competitors sat in chairs facing the crowd and had no idea who had won.

Brolley and Yong tied, and each was thoroughly slimed. Yong took the precaution of wearing a protective suit and hood, while Brolley took the sliming unprotected and even ate some of it as it poured over his face. Laughing, both men hugged each other afterwards as the green slimed dripped from their faces and the crowd cheered in appreciation.

More traditional fundraising efforts were also a part of Giving Day. Raffle tickets were sold for a grand prize “St. Louis Getaway” that included a four-piece luggage set; second prize was four White Sox tickets with a parking pass; and third prize was an assortment of gift cards.

The IVCC Foundation annually awards about 250 scholarships and has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships during the past four years.

“Every bit given helps our students achieve academic success,” IVCC alumni coordinator Janice Corrigan said at the event.

DAVID HOLLY GRANVILLE — David C. Holly, 70, of rural Granville passed away Sunday, April 1, 2018, in the comfort of his home.

Dave was born June 30, 1947, in Spring Valley to Charles A. and Velma (Halm) Holly. He married Barbara O’Connor on July 10, 1971, in Hennepin.

He graduated with the class of 1965 from Hopkins High School. Dave continued his education at the University of Illinois and graduated with honors in 1969 with a degree in agricultural economics.

After graduating, he continued his agricultural profession by farming the family farm for over 50 years. He was very skilled in fabrication, design and repair of all types of farm machinery. He was an avid collector and restorer of antiques. His talent of woodworking led to the restoration of his home, his 1940 wooden Chris-Craft boat and a hobby of model ship building.

A collection of his World War II trench art, model steam toys and antique fishing poles are on display at the Putnam County Agricultural Museum. Dave enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada with family, spending winters in Florida with his wife and had great love for his four grandchildren.

He was on the board of directors of the Granville National Bank for over 40 years. He was a member of the Spring Valley Boat Club for 34 years, a member of the Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau and served as a past board member at the Standard Co-op Elevator. He was a former member of the Bedan Club at St. Bede, the Headers Club in Standard and Illini State Pullers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Holly of Granville; one daughter, Jan (Michael) Hahn of Granville; one son Luke (Megan) Holly of Granville; and four grandsons, Gavin Hahn, Brody Hahn, Connor Holly and Quinn Holly of Granville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John H. Holly.

Services were held Monday, April 9, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with Father Paul Meismer officiating. Burial followed in the Granville Cemetery in Granville.

Visitation was held Sunday, April 8, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Putnam County Agricultural Museum.

Pallbearers were Don O’Connor, Dr. Paul Perona, Jim Scheetz, Marshall Peterlin and Don Mathieson.

Obstructing a peace officer At 2:15 p.m. on April 3, Jason G. A look at Granville’s most playful project Veterans Park playground installation was a community effort

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — It was an unexpectedly cold morning Saturday when more than a dozen Granville residents gathered in Veterans Park to work on a community project.

It was simple compared to the upcoming McCoy Street and water treatment plant projects, but the installation of new playground equipment allowed residents the chance to lend a hand in bettering their community.

It was 17 degrees on the morning of April 7, but village board members, village employees, FFA students from Putnam County High School, a Cub Scout and several citizens were undeterred as they enthusiastically joined forces to assemble the new play equipment.

“It’s really nice to see so many of our younger people have come out to help see this project to completion,” Granville Village Board member Jim Pettit said.

The previous evening had seen the installation of the equipment’s main support poles, and by morning, the concrete had dried and the remaining pieces were ready to be assembled.

The play equipment was purchased from Miracle Recreation Equipment Co. of Monett, Mo., and the village took advantage of the company’s innovative “Community Build” option. This package allows for a heavily discounted installation cost because the community provides the labor and the company provides knowledgeable help.

“A professional installation could add approximately $6,000 to the equipment cost, but with a community build, we come for half a day with everything they’ll need to install it and provide the expertise,” Miracle Recreation’s Mike Cederlund said.

Miracle provided assistance with drilling the post holes, and their presence assured the project moved along quickly and efficiently.

He added they typically do about 25 community builds a year and sell approximately 100 playground assemblies overall.

Granville’s assembly was completed that day by the more than 14 volunteers. Pettit said the border and landscaping around the new equipment will be finished at a later, and hopefully warmer, date.

The older playground that was replaced was roughly 20 years old, and it was relocated to a park in nearby Cedar Point. The new and bigger equipment is expected to last about 40 years or more.

This installation also marks the first community project that Village President Jared Baker has seen through from inception to comple-

tion. Baker, who was busy helping with the installation, said he hadn’t even thought about that aspect of it.

He was then asked how it felt.

“It feels good,” he answered happily.

BY PAM EGGEMEIER Shaw Media WASHINGTON — Two broadband bills sponsored by U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, were included in the nation’s new spending bill that provides $600 million in new funding for broadband projects in rural areas.

After taking Congress to task for passing the $1.3 trillion 2018 omnibus bill, President Donald Trump signed it on March 23. The bill funds the government through September.

Adam The $600 million in Kinzinger appropriated funding will set up a pilot program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for rural broadband projects. The money also will be used to bolster existing USDA loan and grant programs targeting underserved rural areas.

The ag department estimates that the investment will leverage $1 billion in new rural broadband projects.

As the importance of fast and affordable internet connectivity increases, rural areas have been at a disadvantage in accessing information at home and in the workplace, schools and health care settings.

“Our rural communities have significantly lower rates of broadband availability, and it’s important that we close that service gap,” Kinzinger said.

According to the FCC, 24 million American households don’t have access to reliable and affordable highspeed Internet, and 80 percent of those homes are in rural areas.

A total of $13.5 billion will be invested in rural infrastructure through USDA programs in this fiscal year.

MCNABB — The village of McNabb has announced that it does not have a “cleanup day” in its contract with Republic Services.

Residents are able to put out bulk items every other week now, and the Republic Services contract states there won’t be a separate spring cleanup day scheduled.

Items not being accepted are appliances, building materials, tires, paint, yard waste, concrete, electronics of any kind, large auto or truck parts, engine or machine oils, or hazardous waste.

McNabb village residents should refer to the new recyclables “accepted/not accepted” guides received with their new recycling carts.

Can Illinois be saved? Some people wonder I

feel compelled by the recent Illinois primary election to revisit the topic of “Can Illinois be saved?” Of course, it can be saved (returned to stability, growth).

Whether it will be saved is a different question.

In Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrat J.B. Pritzker, Illinois voters nominated two uninspiring candidates. The election apparently provided impetus for friends of mine to renew with vigor their drumbeat of despair about the future of our state.

I fear many of my friends have shifted their assessment of our state’s future from, “It won’t be saved” to “It can’t be saved.”

That is tragic, and incorrect.

I admit that Illinois has excruciating problems. Billions in unpaid bills; worst credit rating in the nation; and public pension liabilities so great that we have been stealing from fundamental functions like our school and colleges to meet these obligations.

And political dysfunction: Three recent annual legislative sessions without a state budget.

We must address these problems – which are solvable – and change the narrative.

The billions in unpaid bills and unsecured pension obligations cannot be wished away.

The Civic Federation of Chicago,

a century-old business group, has provided one roadmap to fiscal stability: Tax most retirement income, and impose stringent cost controls on future spending. Painful? Obviously.

And I’m sure more retirees would depart our state if we taxed their pensions. Fortunately, the outflow would be offset in part by all the young techies and professionals drawn to the remarkably vibrant central city of Chicago.

The albatross of unfunded pension obligations is a tough bird to wrest from our collective neck. The state high court has said we cannot reduce benefits promised by earlier contracts. Yet, there may be possibilities for paring back the annual costs a bit.

Philanthropist Dan Kearney has created a pension reform think tank at the Civic Federation to investigate every such angle that might pass court muster.

And the public narrative must be changed, from moans and hand-wringing to a celebration of our strengths.

For example, Site Selection mag-

azine recently named Illinois the third most attractive state in the nation, after Texas and Ohio, for having the most new and expanded business facilities per capita. And this award is for the second year in a row. Bet you wouldn’t have imagined that.

In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently inked a huge $8.6 billion expansion deal with major airlines to keep O’Hare the best air hub in the nation for both domestic and international destinations.

Add to this our possibly unparalleled transportation infrastructure in interstates, rail, and water; and our high ranking for percentage of residents with bachelor’s and graduate degrees.

So, our problems can be solved, but will they be? Putting us onto a path to stability will take inspiring, possibly fall-on-one’s-sword leadership.

The term “political leader” is mostly a misnomer. Most of us elect our officials to reflect our views, not to lead us down paths that may be painful, though sometimes necessary.

This may be why John F. Kennedy’s 1955 “Profiles in Courage” has remained so popular. Kennedy recounted stories of U.S. senators who have exhibited uncommon — and unpopular — courage in public life.

Most elected officials, covetous of the personal reaffirmation of re-election, prefer this “leadership strategy”: Figure out where we, the public, is tending, then rush to get out in front of it. And we, the “great beast,” as Alexander Hamilton called the public, prefer nostrums over pain.

Unfortunately, at present, politics is all about the personal egos of Gov. Rauner and Speaker Madigan, rather than about how to save Illinois.

I expect that if Rauner is re-elected, he will continue to “kick the can down the road,” as others before him have done. That is, he will continue to contend that he will solve our problems by somehow cutting taxes, even though his own proposed budget, including our recent state tax boost, is maybe $1 billion to $2 billion in the red.

A Pritzker-Madigan governorship would likely put onto the ballot a constitutional amendment to authorize a progressive income tax, that is, higher rates for higher incomes.

The Illinois Constitution says we must tax at a flat, same-for-all rate.

Bottom line: Our problems can be solved, though not without some pain.

Help M-P Relay for Life illuminate the park on April 20

HENRY — Relay For Life is fast approaching and while this year things are going to look a little different, all your favorite aspects of Relay will still be held at this event.

Relay for Life of Marshall and Putnam counties will be hosting a dinner and program from 5 to 9 p.m. in Henry, with great food, entertainment and a mission to raise money to put an end to cancer.

A dinner of fried chicken and spaghetti will be held at the Henry American Legion beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase from team members ahead of the event or at the door the night of the event. This year, you can also purchase tickets online by visiting https://mprelayforlife.ticketspice.com/illuminate-the-park-dinner. Tickets are $10 for an adult, $5 for children ages 3-12 and free for children under 3 years old.

Dinner will be served until 7 p.m. Carry-outs are also available.

The popular silent auction will remain a fixture

at this year’s event. The silent auction will be open for bidding from 5 to 7 p.m. at the American Legion. Teams will be donating lots of great items for you to bid on. There is sure to be something for everyone.

The April 20 Relay event will also feature music by the band Yesterday’s News. The acoustic/mandolin-bass duo will be playing from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. outside at the Legion. The event will also feature a bounce house and other fun outdoor activities for the whole family in front of the Legion.

The road between the Legion and the Park will be closed to provide a great experience for this year’s event. There will be golf carts available for those who need assistance.

At 7:30 p.m., the event will shift to Central Park for the program and ceremony portion of the evening. M-P Relay welcomes Karen Robertson as this year’s honorary survivor. She will be speaking about her cancer journey.

WIN will hold quarterly gathering on April 17 LASALLE — The Women Inspired Network (WIN), an initiative of the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation, will hold its quarterly gathering on Tuesday, April 17, at Lock 16 Café & Gift Shop, 754 First St. in LaSalle.

Cocktails and social time will begin at 5:30 p.m. A light dinner, with soup, salad and sandwiches, will be served at 6 p.m. The cost is $12 for the dinner and the meeting fee is $2 per person.

The guest speaker for the evening will be local attorney and judge Melissa Olivero, an inspired and inspiring woman who spent several years involved with family law issues. She is a trustee with Illinois Valley Community College, and currently serves with the National Labor Relations Board. Information about the WIN organization will also be available.

All women are invited to attend. Current members of WIN are encouraged to attend and bring a guest. In 2017, WIN members contributed more than $15,800, which was distributed to three local organizations through a grant process — Freedom House of Princeton, serving five counties; ADV/SAS, who serves LaSalle and Livingston counties; and Starved Rock Regional Center, formerly Easter Seals of LaSalle and Bureau Counties.

The goal of the WIN organization is to Gather, Give and Grow to at least 150 women who will contribute annually to the Giving Circle, resulting in more than $30,000 for annual distribution to programs and projects that empower and enhance the lives of women and children throughout LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties.

Women who are willing to host a small group of friends and family members in their home or office, or even a local restaurant for a small informational meeting about WIN, are encouraged to contact Trisha Schafer, chairman of the Women Inspired Network Steering Committee. The gatherings are a fun and relaxed way to promote WIN in your personal and professional circle.

Moon Ruin is the new music project of Princeton native Jared Bartman. Having released music under his own name for 10 years, Bartman’s move to Moon Ruin is a tribute to the potential of partnership and the strength it provides. His newest album, “Slow Down Ego,� was birthed in the refuge of makeshift basement studios and features coconspirators Mike Noyce and Liam O’Brien, plus Bartman’s wife and children.

The narrative of “Slow Down Ego� started some years ago in rural Illinois when Bartman began writing songs. After a handful of projects and a DIY touring schedule, life forced Bartman to clarify his priorities. Balancing full- and part-time jobs and the responsibilities of a new family, he managed to maintain his drive for writing and recording music. For the years in which “Slow Down Ego� was made, this meant holding down the night shift as a U.S. postal worker, sleeping for a few hours after work, and spending the remaining waking hours with his family and his music. With the addition of Noyce and O’Brien, creativity bloomed, and “Slow Down Ego� resulted in the sound of an artist creating exactly what he means to.

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s agriculture program was bolstered recently when the Illinois Community College Board approved its application for an Associate of Applied Science degree in Agronomy.

“This further expands the agriculture opportunities already available at IVCC,” said program coordinator and instructor Willard Mott. “Addition of the AAS in Agronomy further empowers students of all ages and backgrounds to accomplish their career goals.”

Agronomy majors hone their expertise in crop and soil science, pest management and precision ag technology, Mott said.

“This is another big step forward for our agriculture program” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran. Last summer, the ICCB certified IVCC’s AAS in Agricultural Business Management.

The two year, 60-credit agronomy program beginning this fall will prepare students for immediate employment in a steadily expanding sector.

Scotty McCreery tickets are on sale now PRINCETON — Country music artist Scotty McCreery will headline the annual Bureau County Fair country concert on Thursday, Aug. 23 at the fairgrounds in Princeton.

After winning Season 10 of “American Idol” in 2011, McCreery made history when he became the youngest male artist of any genre, and the first country music artist ever, to have his debut album enter at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

“Clear as Day” was certified platinum for sales of one million units in just 13 weeks and became the best-selling solo album released by a country artist in 2011. The singles “I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble with Girls” were also certified platinum.

McCreery won the New Artist of the Year award at both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards and the American Country Awards, and also received the CMT Award for Breakthrough Video of the Year for

“The Trouble with Girls.”

A year later, “Christmas with Scotty McCreery” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Holiday Albums chart and was quickly certified gold.

His next album, 2013’s “See You Tonight,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, and “See You Tonight” and “Feelin’ It” both reached the Top 10 and were certified platinum and gold, respectively.

“See You Tonight” earned McCreery both his first BMI Award for writing one of the Top 50 Country Songs of 2015, and his first Music Row No. 1 Challenge Coin for landing atop the Music Row Country Breakout Chart.

The greatest breakthrough, however, may have come in February 2015, when he wrote “Five More Minutes” with Rogers and Monty Criswell.

“I knew it was a special song,” he said. “I tweeted that day that we just wrote my favorite song I’d ever written.”

As the search for a new label continued, McCreery and his team made a brave decision, and released the song on their own, with no record company behind it. On its first day of release, “Five More Minutes” was

ranked No. 2 on the iTunes country singles chart and No. 9 on the iTunes all-genre singles chart.

The emotional music video, with home movies of McCreery as a boy alongside his family and friends, was the No. 1 country music video and the No. 2 music video overall on iTunes.

It stayed at No. 1 on the GAC Top 20 Countdown for six weeks.

His powerful performance of “Five More Minutes” on the Grand Ole Opry stage during CMA Music Festival won the 2016 Rare Country Award for “Grand Ole Opry Moment of the Year.”

“Sometimes you feel like you’ve really got to sell something,” McCreery said, “but this one, from the first time people heard it, everybody started telling me their own stories, and I enjoyed that more than anything else. It would have put us in a predicament if it hadn’t succeeded — looking back, yeah, it was a crazy thing to do, but we just went full steam ahead.”

The final piece fell into place when, just as “Five More Minutes” hit the Top 40 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, McCreery signed with Triple Tigers Records/Sony Music

Entertainment.

“Triple Tigers is a great fit for me,” McCreery said. “They are music people, and they work hard. With this label on my side, ‘Five More Minutes’ has become my fastest rising single to reach Top 15 since my debut single.

And we’ve only just begun.”

Of course, there’s one other big story that underlies “Seasons Change.”

In September 2017, the guy who was voted both “Country Music’s Hottest Bachelor” and “Country Music’s Sexiest Man” by the readers of NASH Country Weekly Magazine proposed to longtime girlfriend Gabi Dugal in the mountains of North Carolina.

OGLESBY — On March 2, the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener and Master Naturalist programs for Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties held a unitwide 2018 kick off meeting on the campus of Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby.

The purpose of the kickoff meeting was to connect with Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists in the four counties, and to discuss program goals and visions for 2018 and beyond.

The Master Gardener and Master Naturalist programs support local communities by providing numerous volunteer hours through Extension approved community service projects, as well as educational programs, services and events. The mission of the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.”

Edible car contest results announced OGLESBY — An all-time record 36 cars competed in Illinois Valley Community College’s recent Edible Car Contest with 18 cars created by students from five local high schools.

IVCC teams dominated the speed run with Computer Aided Design (CAD) students Ben Ross’ and Lewis Habben’s “Toasted Two” taking first and Michelle Lakan’s, Alyssa White’s and Jordan Timm’s “Marchmallow J.A.M.” taking second. CAD students Mike Straith and Matt Kamin tied for third with fellow CAD student Todd Morgan.

While the speed run was the highlight of the 13th annual competition, entries were judged in a number of categories. Morgan’s car took first for design, Straith and Kamin took first for detail and another CAD entry by Nicholas Nicer took first in creativity.

St. Bede’s Max Manning and Ben Morrow took first in the “meaty” category and John Potthof and Seth Ludford took first in “delicious.”

Hall’s Courtney Kobold claimed first in the “veggie” category and Nate Draper took first in “wheelman.”

Lakan, White and Timm took first in the “zombie” category and the “faculty” category was won by the nine-person team “Financial Aid Flyers,” with Kim Herout, Ida Brown, Lorri Foockle, Amy Woods, Neil Jagodzinski, Alyssa McCauley, Selena Campos, Isamar Taylor and Patty Williamson.

The contest, which celebrates National Engineering Week, has been hosted by the Workforce Development Division since 2006 and was originally sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Dorene Data, organizer and coordinator of Computer-Aided Design, said, “Our purpose is to demonstrate that STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math, can be creative and fun.” According to participants, the contest succeeded.

Many said the highlight was working in teams to come up with a creative and workable design and even re-design, or “finding new ways to improve the design,” as one student put it.

However, eating food that didn’t work was a definite plus for many participants, while one student said the most difficult part of the process was “leaving some of the food for the car.”

Major racing design challenges, similar to past years, were “axles that do not break” and “getting the wheels to roll,” according to two students.

Among the lessons learned: not only that wheels need to roll but axle assemblies need to keep the body of a vehicle off of the track. A few entries refused to roll, needed a nudge to start, or slid instead of rolling down the three-foot ramp.

While the cars may have been low tech, the track mechanism was definitely high tech. For the last few years, IVCC students, working under the guidance of electronics program coordinator Jim Gibson, have created, designed and built a track using a pneumatic rotary actuator hooked to a kitchen spatula used as a starting gate. That device, and the photo reflective eyes used for timing the speed, are controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC).

Teams start the race by depressing a push button programmed to lift the starting gate (spatula). Speed is calculated by the PLC and displayed utilizing HMI software with results projected on a monitor as actual time and as “mouthfuls per hour.”

Gibson said hardware for this set up stays basically the same each year but the software changes. This year, his students added troubleshooting assistance and alarms to the HMI system. “The system would notify us if the photo eyes were covered, maybe with cheese or icing from the vehicles,” he said.

PCPS announces kindergarten preregistration

Fundraiser announced for Extension and 4-H

GRANVILLE — Putnam County Primary School has announced the kindergarten preregistration deadline will be Friday, April 20.

Students currently enrolled in preschool at Putnam County Primary School have received their packet for registration. Any students not currently enrolled at PCPS can pick-up a registration packet, complete and return it in the primary school’s office prior to April 20.

At preregistration, parents/guardians will need to bring the child’s county registered birth certificate indicating that the child will be 5 years old by Sept. 1.

Four cash prizes will be awarded PRINCETON — The Friends of Extension and 4-H, who help to support outreach educational programs for University of Illinois Extension – Bureau County and its 4-H/Youth Development Program, invite individuals to participate in a cash raffle fundraiser.

Four cash prizes will be awarded — $2,500, $1,000, $500 and $250 — on Friday, June 15.

Tickets are $50 for one, or three for $100. All

monies raised from the event will be used to support the 4-H and Extension educational programs in Bureau County.

The winning tickets will be drawn at 2 p.m. June 15 at the Becker Professional Building, 850 Thompson St. in Princeton.
