Virus cuts short some students’ stays Spanish student at PCHS remains

BY GOLDIE RAPP AND KEVIN HIERONYMUS news@putnamcountyrecord.com Imagine being a teenager in a foreign country and a worldwide pandemic breaks out.

Even worse, think of the parents whose kids are thousands of miles overseas.

The coronavirus pandemic of 2020 has sent thousands of foreign exchange students in the United States scurrying to get home.

That is not the case with Putnam County High School exchange student Luna Gonzalez, who has not yet left the U.S. to return home to Madrid, Spain.

Andrea Crew, Illinois Field Manager for International Cultural Exchange Services, which is the exchange program Gonzalez used to study abroad, confirmed the program is not forcing students to return to their home countries.

It’s up to the students and their families to decide what they want to do. Crew said while some of the students in her region made the decision to return home, Gonzalez is still deciding what to do.

Gonzalez has the option to complete the year through online classes here in the U.S. or at home in Spain, if that option becomes available through Putnam County High School.

Gonzalez had been a member of the school’s wrestling team and was disappointed when a tournament was canceled due to precautions being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Crew said Gonzalez also had hopes to go out for track and field this year, and was disappointed to have missed that opportunity.

When exchange students are feeling stressed about the current situation and concerned as to what is going to happen, Crew said she reminds them they can return home at any time and that there is no protocol in the U.S. that can prevent them from doing so.

Right now, she’s encouraging students to stay and wait it out as they may have regrets later, learning schools reopened and they had already left and never got to finish.

Plus, there’s the thought that even when they return, they will still be having to follow similar shelter-inplace protocols to prevent the spread of the virus.

Third Bureau County resident tests positive for virus Man, 77, is being treated in a hospital PRINCETON — A third resident of Bureau County has tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19), according to a news release issued April 3 by health department officials.

The individual, a 77-year-old male, was screened and tested by an area hospital. Public health officials were notified of a positive test, according to state and local public health protocol. The individual is hospitalized at this time.

individuals who were in contact with the case. Federal privacy restrictions prohibit the release of any additional information regarding this case. No further information regarding the investigation is available at this time.

“This is the third confirmed case of COVID-19 in Bureau County and the fourth in counties served by the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments. The first case was reported in Marshall County on March 23,” said Hector Gomez, BPMCHD administrator.

“As more testing becomes available, we expect to see the number of confirmed cases continue to rise in our counties,” Gomez said.

Note to readers: Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru has released the following news release: Illinois Valley Community Hospital is working diligently to prepare for the possibility of treating a high number of COVID-19 patients. This includes making sure we have enough supplies on hand to meet the demand.

While there is a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) across the country and ALL hospitals are conserving supplies, IVCH would like to assure you that masks and other necessary PPE items (gloves, gowns, eye cover, etc.) are available and are being worn by hospital and clinic staff as needed.

Our current PPE usage and protocols are based on CDC standard and transmission-based precautions for

She departs to lead Parkland Health Center in Missouri Note to readers: The following is a news release issued April 3 by Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton.

The Perry Memorial Hospital Board of Directors announces Annette Schnabel, president/ CEO’s resignation was accepted with regret by the Board of Directors on April 2, 2020. She will remain in her leadership role at Perry until May 8, 2020.

Annette has accepted a position as president of Parkland Health Center in Farmington, Mo. with BJC HealthCare.

Annette first joined the Perry executive team in December 2014 as the VP/Chief Operations Officer after 28 years in health care with 18 years in health care admin-

istration. In May 2016, she assumed the role of Perry’s president/CEO, the 13th hospital leader since 1920.

From day one, Annette led by prioritizing Perry, Princeton, and the surrounding communities. She used her energy in the community recognizing Perry’s role in it. She rarely missed an opportunity to show her community spirit at hospital-hosted or sponsored events.

Annette has been active in the community as a member of the Princeton Rotary Club, the Main Street Revitalization Steering Committee, the City of Princeton Bike Pedestrian Commission, the Z-Tour Planning Committee, the Women’s Inspired Network, and the Freedom House Board of Directors.

Annette understood the importance of anticipating health care needs and planning for long-term changes in the industry.

She knew it would take time and careful planning to transform a small hospital like Perry to maintain local health care for another 100 years. Annette invested in a

strategy of small shifts and big moves, slowly but consistently moving Perry onto a path to longterm success and sustainability.

Under her leadership, Per ry reintroduced primary care clinics in our outlying communities of Walnut and Henry. Annette oversaw the recruitment of four physicians, six nurse practitioners, and one physician’s assistant for primary care needs, and expanded the Family Health Clinic to a new facility.

Annette understood the need for access to specialty services provided by orthopedics, podiatry, general surgery and dozens of visiting specialty providers.

She led the expansion of Perry’s role in mental health services, applying for grants and fostering services and collaborations to provide care for residents of all ages and needs.

Annette has used her strong strategic vision and understanding of health care dynamics to prepare the Board and hospital leadership for the changes ahead. Even after

four years, the journey is far from over.

Schnabel stated: “It has been a privilege to have served at Perry along with this exceptional staff. I appreciate Perry’s Board of Directors and the City Council for coming together to plan for the next phase of health care in Princeton and surrounding communities.”

The Perry Board and the City of Princeton will continue to consider the future of Perry — including the ongoing discussions with OSF Healthcare — with the knowledge, tools and mindset Annette has helped to bring to the organization.

Linda Gustafson, Perry Board of Directors chairwoman, stated: “Annette brought many ideas and processes to Perry Memorial Hospital that have greatly improved our hospital’s ability to provide excellent care for the families whom we serve. We wish her the best in her new position and her continued career in health care.”

The Perry Board will immediately start a search for an interim CEO.

Steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW: If you are sick with COVID-19 or think you might have it, follow the steps below to help protect other people in your home and community.

Stay home except to get medical care

Wear a facemask if you are sick

• Stay home: People who are mildly ill with COVID-19 are able to recover at home. Do not leave, except to get medial care. Do not visit public areas.

• If you are sick: You should wear a facemask when you are around other people and before you enter a healthcare provider’s office.

• Stay in touch with your doctor. Call before you get medical care. Be sure to get care if you feel worse or you think it is an emergency.

• If you are caring for others: If the person who is sick is not able to wear a facemask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), then people who live in the home should stay in a different room. When caregivers enter the room of the sick person, they should wear a facemask.

Visitors, other than caregivers, are not recommended.

• Avoid public transportation: Avoid using public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.

Separate yourself from other people in your home, this is known as home isolation • Stay away from others: As much as possible, you should stay in a specific “sick room” and away from other people in your home. Use a separate bathroom, if available.

• Limit contact with pets & animals: You should restrict contact with pets and other animals, just like you would around other people.

- Although there have not been reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19, it is still recommended that people with the virus limit contact with animals until more information is known.

- When possible, have another member of you household care for your animals while you are sick with COVID-19. If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with them. See COVID-19 and Animals for more information.

Call ahead before visiting you doctor • Call ahead: If you have a medial appointment, call your doctor’s office or emergency department, and tell them you have or may have COVID-19.This will help the office protect themselves and other patients.

Cover your coughs and sneezes • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Dispose: Throw used tissues in a lined trash can.

• Wash hands: immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

• Clean and disinfect: Routinely clean high-touch surfaces in your “sick room” and bathroom. Let someone else clean and disinfect surfaces in common areas, but not your bedroom and bathroom.

- If a caregiver or other person needs to clean and disinfect a sick person’s bedroom or bathroom, they should do so on as as-needed basis.The caregiver/other person should wear a mask and wait as long as possible after the sick person has used the bathroom.

• High-touch surfaces include phones, remote controls, counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, keyboards, tablets, and beside tables.

• Clean and disinfect areas that may have blood, stool, or body fluids on them.

If you develop emergency warning signs of COVID-19 get medical attention immediately.

Emergency warning signs include*: • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest • New confusion or inability to arouse • Bluish lips or face * This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.

Call 911 if you have a medical emergency: If you have a medical emergency and need to call 911, notify the operator that you have or think you might have COVID-19. If possible, put on a facemask before medical help arrives.

How to discontinue home isolation • People with COVID-19 who have stayed home (home isolated) can stop home isolation under the following conditions:

- Call your doctor before going in: Before going to the doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them your symptoms.They will tell you what to do.

- If you will not have a test to determine if you are still contagious, you can leave home after these three things have happened: You have had no fever for at least 72 hours (that is three full days of no fever without the use of medicine that reduces fevers) AND other symptoms have improved (for example, when your cough or shortness of breath have improved) AND at least 7 days have passed since your symptoms first appeared - If you will be tested to determine if you are still contagious, you can leave home after these three things have happened: You no longer have a fever (without the use of medicine that reduces fevers) AND other symptoms have improved (for example, when your cough or shortness of breath have improved) AND you received two negative tests in a row, 24 hours apart.Your doctor will follow CDC guidelines.

• Wear a facemask: If possible, put on a facemask before you enter the building. If you can’t put on a facemask, try to keep a safe distance from other people (at least 6 feet away).This will help protect the people in the office or waiting room.

In all cases, follow the guidance of your healthcare provider and local health department. The decision to stop home isolation should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider and state and local health departments. Local decisions depend on local cirumstances.

• Follow care instructions from your healthcare provider and local health department: Your local health authorities will give instructions on checking your symptoms and reporting information.

• Household cleaners and disinfectants: Clean the area or item with soap and wather or another detergent if it is dirty.Then, use a household disinfectant.

- Be sure to follow the instructions on the label to ensure safe and effective use of the product. Many products recommend keeping the surface wet for several minutes to ensure germs are killed. Many also recommend precautions such as wearing gloves and making sure you have good ventilation during use of the product.

- Most EPA-registered household disinfectants should be effective. A full list of disinfectants can be found hereexternal icon.

Monitor your symptoms • Seek medical attention, but call first: Seek medical care right away if your illness is worsening ( for example, if you have difficulty breathing).

4-H members explore the world of leadership at conference EFFINGHAM — More than 100 seventh- and eighth-grade youths learned ways to improve their leadership skills at the 2020 “Passport to Leadership” 4-H Junior Leadership Conference held Feb. 22-23 at the Thelma Keller Convention Center in Effingham.

The delegates came away with practical ways to improve their personal lives, as well as improve their leadership skills they can take back to their 4-H clubs, communities and schools, said Katie Duitsman, University of Illinois Extension 4-H youth development specialist.

Attending the conference were Connor Anderson, Henry Guys & Gals; Ryan Carlson, Henry Guys & Gals; and Cohen Urbanowski, Lostant Leaders.

Team mixing and team building activities helped youths forge new friendships and build their 4-H network. Delegates learned about unique 4-H opportunities where they could further refine the soft skills necessary for successful careers.

The delegates also learned about the growing problem of food insecurity in Illinois. As a team, the group packaged more than 9,000 meals for

families in need in cooperation with Illini Fighting Hunger. The youths formed assembly lines, and each added an ingredient, including soy protein, rice, dried vegetables, and bouillon in the 6-serving bags.

The conference was organized and taught by members of the Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team, a team of uniquely-trained high school and college-aged 4-H members and young adult 4-H alumni. Plenty of time was allowed for the teens to interact with other teenagers from across Illinois.

“Youth expand their understanding of the world when they’re able to interact with youth from places different than where they live,” Duitsman said. “That’s all part of the leadership experience in 4-H.” A portion of the conference expenses was covered by the Illinois 4-H Foundation, which raises private funds to support the Illinois 4-H program. Growmark sponsored a meal, the community service project and a workshops.

Speaking before the Good Citizens honorees — Griffin Self from Henry-Senachwine High School, Emily White from Midland High School and Ali Ciucci from Putnam High School — plus family, faculty members and chapter members, Ashby appeared in a reproduction Virginia-line woolen uniform.

Maddux was born near the James River in Virginia and joined the revolutionary forces when he was 15 1/2 years old. He fought in some of the most famous battles in the area, including the Battle of Monmouth and the conquest of Lord Cornwallis and English troops at Yorktown.

Ashby also displayed the many items a soldier would have carried, such as a haversack to hold his food allotment and utensils, his water canteen, his cartridge box, and his Brown Bess model 2 musket, bayonet scabbard and bayonet. He

Gardening program will offer spring series LASALLE — The spring series of the University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening Program, which focuses on environmental stewardship, home gardening and backyard food production, gets underway the month of April. The public is invited to participate in this free webinar series.

The first session of the series is titled “Slow Flowers: Grow Your Own Cut Flowers.”

University of Illinois Extension State Master Gardener Specialist Candice Hart will teach participants how to grow a variety of cut flowers here in Illinois, the benefits of having cut flowers in the garden and how to condition them to be long lasting. She will

discuss her all-time favorite flowers to grow, and share tips and tricks for success.

This program will be offered via a live webinar at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, from wherever you have internet access by preregistering at go.illinois.edu/fourseasons.

Ashby is a member of the Zeally Moss Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), based in Peoria.

Held at the First Presbyterian Church in Henry and following the recognition ceremony of the three high school Good Citizens students and Ashby’s program, a celebration tea was held for the visitors before the start of the business meeting of the Chief Senachwine Chapter.

The Literacy report emphasized that only 37 percent of U.S. high school graduates read at or above grade 12 level.

The Women’s Issues report discussed the NSDAR involvement in locating and training nurses for the 1898 Spanish-American War. The national society even provided pensions later for the volunteer nurses. The success of the project led to the founding of the Army Nurses Corps.
