Improving local infrastructure

Granville awarded more than $400,000 through grant

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has announced the village of Granville has been awarded $400,132 to be used to make improvements to its water treatment plant.

Announced on March 29, Granville is one of 40 low income communities across 31 Illinois counties to receive a portion

of the $15.3 million awarded through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

The funds provided through the CDBG program are to be used for critical public infrastructure work such as water, sanitary and sewer system improvements.

Each of the 40 communities will be making repairs and upgrades to their various water systems.

IVCC’s 12th Annual Edible Car Contest educates, entertains

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com OGLESBY — It’s an unusual sight to see people cheering as four slices of cantaloupe, a carrot and some cinnamon sticks slowly slide down an incline of a few feet, but it was surprisingly fun to watch. For the past 12 years IVCC has hosted a competition combining the unusual combination of food, science, speed and fun — The Edible Car Contest.

Teams from IVCC and many of the area’s high schools gathered in the cafeteria to test their designs in the creative, colorful contest that shows that STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) can be silly as well as serious.

The annual contest celebrates National Engineering Week and was originally sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Since 2006, it’s been sponsored by the Workforce Development Division.

There was a wide variety of food used for the entries, includ-

ing salami, marshmallows, cookies, pasta, snack cakes, vegetables, fruits and crackers. Some certainly worked better than others. The most critical design challenges according to two of the racers were “axles that don’t break” and “getting the wheels to roll.”

While the cars were decidedly low-tech, the track and timing devices were more cutting edge.

IVCC students working under electronics program coordinator Jim Gibson have designed and constructed a short, inclined track using a pneumatic actuator, and perhaps as a nod to the race cars, a kitchen spatula as a starting gate. At the finish line, a programmable photo eye gauged the speed and time, which were displayed on a monitor.

Each year students tweak the design for improvements. This year alarms and troubleshooting assistance were added.

“The system would notify us if the photo eyes were covered, maybe with cheese or icing from the vehicles,” Gibson said, also offering to bring the setup to other schools and organizations for their own competitions.

Now, there’s a day set aside to celebrate that service as 4-H clubs across the nation come together for the first National 4-H Day of Service on April 29.

The goal of National 4-H Day of Service is to encourage 4-H members in every county to make a positive difference. National 4-H Day of Service is open to everyone in the community — 4-H members, families, volunteers and community partners. Service projects can be done by individuals or as an entire

county 4-H program. No matter what the project, this will be a day to make a difference.

The CDBG program was established in 1974 by the federal Housing and Community Development Act. Administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the DCEO administers the state of Illinois CDBG - Small Cities program.

The money dispensed through the state-level program is only available to local governmental bodies such as cities, villages, towns and counties. Municipalities must have a population of 50,000 or less and not be located within an urban county receiving its own entitlement program funding.

“With the repairs being done it will help improve the distribution of water to residents which can improve our village’s growth and development,” Gimbal said.

Reaching common ground

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — It’s normal to occasionally have feelings of self-doubt, anxiety and depression.

Living in a world where technology is pushing us to constantly move faster while publicly sharing every aspect of our lives only increases the likelihood of those negative emotions, especially for teens.

“Reaching Common Ground with Mental Health” was a program hosted by BP Power, the youth group led in partnership with the Community Partners Against Substance Abuse (CPASA), from 6 to 10 p.m. on March 24 at the Bureau County Metro Center.

The evening featured award-winning speaker and author Jeff Yalden.

Yalden has been the nation’s top youth motivational speaker since 1992 and has spoken to millions of teens in all 50 states and in 48 countries.

Dozens of teens from every area high school were present, including a group from the Lincoln’s Challenge Academy in Rantoul.

According to CPASA project coordinator Dawn Conerton, the program, designed to help teens recognize and handle depression, anxiety, selfharm and suicide, while also removing the stigma associated mental health, was what the teens chose.

“We’re helping to shine a light on these problems and are providing a safe environment for everyone to be themselves,” BP Power President and Bureau Valley High School student Nick Glubczynski said.

He said the changing times and social media can be both problematic and beneficial, and the group wanted to show other teens they weren’t alone with their problems.

The group also wanted to help others to learn to

recognize the warning signs of low self-esteem among their friends.

“We all need to recognize when friends are coming down hard on themselves and to help build them back up. It’s easy to look past it when someone says something negative about themselves, but it may be more serious than you realize.

Recognizing a warning sign could help save a life, and that means more than anything,” BP Power member and Putnam County High School student Olivia Lawley said.

Yalden, who was asked for his opinion of what’s causing the increase in depression and anxiety among teens, shared multiple causes — the “helicopter” parenting-style, which he said restricts the development of coping skills and self-esteem by preventing children from learning from their challenges and mistakes; cell phones and social media; a lack of balance and boundaries; and the grind of everyday life and responsibilities.

Yalden began the high energy program by sharing his own lifelong struggles with depression, anxiety and PTSD. He also shared the struggle he’d faced that very day.

“When I arrived in town today I didn’t want to be here or to do this,” he said, comparing his feelings to those which everyone has felt at some point before having to go to school or work.

That simple and honest admission in itself was enough to begin to put the teens at ease as they listened to Yalden share how he overcame that feeling and arrived “ready to go.”

Yalden then conducted a series of humorous trust-building exercises which allowed the group to become comfortable and acquainted with each other.

“The more trust and respect we have for each other, the better our relationships will be and

Yalden taught the teens about meditation, personal responsibility; healthy relationships; borders and boundaries; self-esteem; how to defuse anxiety; and most importantly, how to accept themselves.

“It’s important to know who you are, but it’s just as important to know who you aren’t. If you live to be accepted by others you’ll begin a pattern where you’ll spend your life always needing more people to accept you. And sometimes, you have to know how to pick yourself up,” Yalden said.

Cell phones and social media use were also covered. Yalden said cell phones are never going to go away, but added neither is meeting and talking to people eye-toeye.

“Know when to put the phone down; it’s all about boundaries.” he said, including the impact that sleep, exercise, diet and time with nature can have on mental health.

The teen leaders of BP Power were hopeful that what was learned from Yalden would be used by

“The event was positive regardless of the topics being very emotional and sensitive. The students gained a better sense of themselves and their peers. When the event began, we knew a lot of

them didn’t know each other, but by the end of the evening, the kids had gained a connection by realizing they’re all in this together and are not alone,” Conerton said.

She added one of the highlights of the evening was seeing the teens working together and gaining the confidence to appreciate and believe in themselves.

“It was great to experience our youth coming together in an effort to decrease the negative stigma of mental health,” she said.

LASALLE — David G. Day, 84, of LaSalle passed away Monday, March 27, 2017, at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru.

He was born Sept. 12, 1932, in Putnam County to Olen and Elsie Day. He married Elaine Lodi Oct. 13, 1956, in St. Patrick’s Church in LaSalle.

David served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 and also served in the Army Reserves from 1953 to 1961. He worked for Standard Oil in Peru as a truck driver and later drove for several businesses.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in LaSalle, was past exalted ruler for the LaSalle Elks Club, and a member of the Peru Eagles Club, Oglesby Elks Club, and the Putnam, Tiskilwa and Magnolia historical societies. He was involved with the Boy Scouts and volunteered as a Red Coat for IVCH in Peru for 20 years.

David enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He enjoyed reading, playing euchre and meeting new people.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine of LaSalle; his two children, Steve (Mary) Day of Streator and Cheryl (Bill) Lipka of Spring Valley; four grandchildren, Virginia (Ryan) Mui, Hollie Day, Jacob Day and Bradley (Sara) Hauger; three brothers, Charles Day of Dixon, Benjamin Day of McNabb and Thom Day of Chicago; and one sister, Elizabeth Steinwachs of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, Tony Day. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 31, at the Mueller Funeral Home in Peru with the Rev. Brett Todd, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in LaSalle, officiating. The LaSalle-Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group presented the flag following the service. Cremation took place at the Mueller Crematory following the services with burial at a later date. Visitation was from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

MARK — Adeline E. Moriarty, 86, of Mark died Thursday, March 30, 2017, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Adeline was born March 13, 1931, in Waukegan to Nicola and Rose Ann (Carani) Verda. She married James E. “Jim” Moriarty May 15, 1954, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville.

She attended Hopkins High School and she was a homemaker. Adeline loved her family, being a Mom and Grandma were most important in her life. She loved shopping especially when it involved buying collectables for her grandchildren. You would always find Adeline in her kitchen, as she was an excellent cook and loved making tortalach and ravioli.

Adeline was also a avid Cubs fan.

Survivors include her husband, James E. “Jim” Moriarty of Mark; one son, James A. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dominic and Richard; and a sister-in-law, Paulette Verda.

Prayers were at 10 a.m. Monday, April 3, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Cremation rites were accorded following the service.

Visitation was from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at the funeral home and prior to the services Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, Putnam County Community Center or the donor’s choice.

GRANVILLE — Marjorie June Greathouse, 87, of Granville passed away Friday, March 31, 2017, in Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Marge was born Aug. 25, 1929, in Bloomfield, Iowa, to Frank and Ernestine (Reynolds) Platt. She married William E. “Blue” Greathouse Sr. Aug. 24, 1947, in Hennepin.

Marge graduated from Hopkins High School in 1947. She retired from Bassicks Factory in Spring Valley after many years.

She and Blue enjoyed many trips through the years to Blue’s boyhood home in Nashville, Ind., taking along many members of the family throughout the years. Her greatest joys in life was taking care of her husband, Blue, and her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed the weekends and vacations spent at the camper in Necedah, Wis. Marge is survived by her children, Patricia (Jack) Narczewski of Spring Valley, Cynthia (Joseph) Shevokas of Arlington, William E. (Carol) Greathouse Jr. of DePue, Frank (Mary) Greathouse of Necedah, Wis., and Jeffrey M. (Eleanor) Greathouse of Granville; her beloved little dog and favorite child, Gidget; her grandchildren, Anne M. (Craig) Johnson, Matthew J. (Katie) Shevokas, Tina L. (Matthew) Sakalas, Jessica (Doug) Tolsma, Joseph W. (Jessica) Greathouse, Seth M. Greathouse and Devin M. Greathouse; her great-grandchildren, Alexander C. Johnson, Ellen J. Johnson, Adam W. Johnson, Kiersten E. Shevokas, Laela C. Shevokas, Chloe M. Sakalas, Carson M. Sakalas, Jonica Stinebower, Skyla Blue Greathouse and Brock J. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 4, in the HelmerShields Funeral Home in Granville with Pastor Betty Delgado officiating. Burial was in the Granville Cemetery.

Visitation was held Monday, April 3, and prior to the services Tuesday in the funeral home.

DAVID BRUHL GRANVILLE — David Elmer Bruhl, 34, of Granville died Thursday, March 23, 2017, at his residence.

David was born March 24, 1982, in Spring Valley to Doug and Brenda (Waldschmidt) Bruhl.

David was a graduate of Putnam County High School, Class of 2002. He was employed at High Tech Electronic Products and MFG Inc. in Oglesby, where

he enjoyed working.

David is survived by his children, Jacob and Aubrie Bruhl of Wyanet; his parents, Doug and Brenda Bruhl of Port Charlotte, Fla.; his grandparents, Elmer and Mary Waldschmidt of Granville, with whom he resided, and Edwin and Kathy Bruhl of Varna; and many aunts, uncles and cousins who he loved spending time with.

He also enjoyed his time riding motor-

cycles and snowmobiles with his longtime friend, Josh Miller.

As per David’s request, cremation will be accorded with no funeral services. A celebration of David’s life will be planned at a later date.

Is social media socially responsible?

L

et me start off by saying, I enjoy social media. I have a couple of Facebook pages — a personal one and one as editor of this newspaper. I also have a Twitter account, where I try to occasionally “tweet” now and then, though I’m not convinced there’s much impact. I know there are other social media venues out there, however, I’ve got my hands full with Facebook and Twitter — both which tend to get less and less of my time.

This newspaper also has a presence on Facebook and Twitter. It’s been good for us as a business, and clearly, it’s another vehicle in which we can get the news of the day out to those who are our “friend” on both entities.

First and foremost, let me preface my thoughts by saying Facebook has afforded me some opportunities that otherwise may not have come my way.

I’ve been able to reconnect with many friends from my past.

That’s been fun. They are folks who in many cases haven’t crossed my path in many years,

and it’s been interesting to see where they are now and what they’re doing. I am grateful for those opportunities.

As someone who doesn’t do a great job of remembering birthdays, anniversaries and other important days in the lives of those I hold most dear, Facebook has become a good source of helping me remember those dates. I can wish someone a happy birthday or a happy anniversary with a few keystrokes on this computer and the click of the mouse. It’s as simple as that.

I also enjoy Facebook to learn about the fun things my “friends” are doing or experiencing — the birth of a child/ grandchild, a trip they’ve taken, a promotion they’ve received, etc. I also appreciate the posts from those Facebook friends who share heartfelt moments of a loved one passing; someone who is ill and could use prayers; or those who just need to get some difficult situations off their chest. I think it can be therapeutic for those creating these posts — especially when

There are other positive uses of social media. The aforementioned are just a smattering of things that stand out to me, however, we each use social media in a host of positive ways. It can be a good thing.

But like most everything good, social media is oftentimes used in a negative fashion. I could give you countless examples — those posts that cause us to wince, grimace or shake our heads in disbelief, but you know what I’m talking about when it comes to using social media in this way. Like you, I’ve seen ideas, concepts, people ... crucified with words. I’ve seen banter and bickering that often becomes very heated. I’ve seen gossip spread like wildfire, and I’ve seen posts shared that don’t

have a lick of truth to them.

While most of us have heard the lyrics from an old REO Speedwagon song, “Talk is cheap when the story is good,” I find these social media posts very disturbing. I’m not quite sure what those who post these types of messages gain from doing so, but I often find myself shaking my head in disbelief when I see some of these things.

It’s enough to make me re-evaluate how important Facebook really is to me.

I can’t imagine how many people, causes and ideas have been harmed by those who choose to respond in a hateful manner or who weigh in on a topic of which they are uninformed. I’m not talking about a fun back-and-forth conversation about the Cubs and the Cardinals, or something similar to that. I’m talking about hateful posts by hateful people. I want to believe that was never the intent of social media.

Will this column cause the focus of negative social media to change? Of course not. If people have an ax to grind or

they want to humiliate people publicly, Facebook is a tool they can use that is free, open to the public and probably makes themselves feel better for doing so.

As for me, though, I don’t want to be one of those people.

I want to believe I’m better than that. Actually, I want to believe we’re all better than that. I firmly think if we have something to say to someone which may not be socially acceptable, or at the least private, we need to make a phone call or speak face to face, rather than posting it on Facebook for the world to see.

I’m probably preaching to the choir here. Negative comments on social media or untrue comments are made by those who want a reaction from the public.

Bottom line though, It’s common courtesy, common sense ... and unfortunately, it’s an alltoo-common problem with our use of social media.

Dialing it back a notch I

t finally happened -- the other day my sixth-grader asked me a question I’ve been dreading for some time.

“When can I get a phone?” he asked, knowing the answer wasn’t going to be what he wanted to hear.

My answer was the same as it would have been if he asked me when he could get a Facebook page. I told him we’d get him a phone when he gets to high school.

I don’t blame him for asking. After all, many of his friends already have their own phones, and for that matter, so do some of the children in my daughter’s fourth-grade class.

I’m opposed to my children having their own phone at such a young age for a number of reasons, and I tried to explain those to my children, since my daughter was also extremely interested in the conversation my son and I were having.

They thought it came down to the expense of buying a phone. That’s the smallest concern I have about giving my children a phone. Here are some of the reasons I gave them for not allowing them to have their own phones until they’re in high school: • There’s no need for it: At this age, they don’t need a phone. Their dad and I attend all their extracurricular activities, and we know when all their practices end. If their friends want to play with them, their parents have our phone numbers, and they can call us, or their kids can just stop by and ring the doorbell. It’s not hurting their social lives that they don’t have a phone at this point.

• They would probably just break it or lose it anyway: My husband has a hard enough time keeping track of his phone — I don’t need anyone else in the household losing theirs.

I think we’d probably have to tear the house apart on a daily basis for phone searches until they learned to be responsible enough for phone ownership.

• Cyberbullying: Bullying in schools is bad enough without throwing technology into the mix. Phones and Facebook pages give children one

COMMENTARY Shannon Serpette more place to be bullied. And when you have a phone or a Facebook page, a child’s daily exposure to bullies doesn’t stop when school lets out. It can happen day or night, at all hours.

That’s too much for a junior high child to deal with.

• They already spend enough time with technology: My kids already like playing games on the computer or on Wi. If they got a phone too, I’d never be able to get them off the couch. Without one, they are perfectly happy to go outside and shoot baskets, throw a Frisbee, go for a run, or play me in a game of tennis. Why would I want to sabotage that by giving them a phone? I want them to get as much physical activity as possible for health purposes, and a phone would jeopardize that.

• I don’t care about being popular: Do I want my kids to love and respect me? Of course. But they can love and respect me without me giving into all their requests. I deny them things on a daily basis, and we still have a close relationship. They don’t need to think I’m a “cool” mom. Parenthood isn’t a popularity contest, and if it were, I’d be OK with losing it as long as I knew that what I was doing was best for them.

• I’m in no hurry for them to grow up: They’ll spend a lifetime being attached to their phones and answering their emails and texts. I want these fleeting carefree childhood days to last as long as they can. I don’t want them to look back and realize they wasted all their time tinkering with their phones. I want them to have real-life experiences with each other and their friends — not their computers and phones.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR ‘An anti-environment extremist’ To the Editor, The news continues to be dire as President Trump continues down his path of destructionist decisions for our country.

He is certainly not “making America great again.” He picked Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency. Pruitt was the former attorney general of Oklahoma. He made one of his first acts, after being sworn in, to completely dismantle his own office’s Environmental Protection Unit. His is an anti-environment extremist!

Only a scant nine days before President-elect Donald Trump was to be sworn in, he met with the CEOs of Monsanto and Bayer This was a very bad sign that the Trump Administration was prepared to back the proposed merger of the German-based Bayer and the American-based Monsanto. This would be a disaster in the making. The merger would create a global chemical giant with unprecedented power over farmers, America’s food supply and pose an even greater threat to endangered pollinators like bees.

The scientific evidence is crystal clear that neonic pesticides are taking a huge toll on bees. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, an incredible 44 percent of honey bee colonies collapsed

over the past year. A large number of scientific studies find a widely used class of pesticides called “neonics” is a leading cause of the devastating declines.

The use of neonics on our fields has caused an invasion of our wildflowers and native plants leaving precious few safe places for bees and other pollinators to feed. It has also created nightmare super weeds which become harder to eradicate.

We not only must protect the bees, we must protect ourselves. There is disturbing evidence that our food is in danger. Our federal government has done testing and found the chemicals in fruits and vegetables. Take note that it’s in our produce, not on them.

The plants absorb the chemical; therefore, neonics can not be washed off by consumers. So if you don’t care about the bees, you might start thinking about the health and safety of our children and ourselves.

Write to Mr. Pruitt and tell him to do his job and use his EPA department to ban the use of neonics. He must not stand down and give Bayer and Monsanto a free pass to flood our farms with neonics that are toxic to bees and may be to humans as well. Remember, one in every three bites of food we eat depends on bees!

Lady Panthers beat Midland by 15-run rule GRANVILLE — Aleceya Davis pitched a four-inning 16-1 no-hitter when the game was called by the 15 runrule after three innings on Tuesday, March 21 in Granville. She struck out seven, and walked one.

Paige Veronda led PC with three hits while Davis and Olivia Holmes had two each. Putnam County scored nine runs in the first, five in the second and two in the third.

Midland scored its lone run in the first inning.

Putnam County’s Lindsey DiazDeleon won the 400

in 1:03.29 and claimed the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 11.5 inches. She also ran on the Lady Panthers’ 1,600 relay with Liv Lawley, Emily Walker and Emma Cyr that won in 4:30.51. Lawley took first in the 300 hurdles in 50.78 seconds, while PC’s 3,200 relay of Katrien Holocker, Destiny West, Jen Alvarado and Teegan Pantenburg won in 11:56.23.

Registration for Carus’ Summer Science Camp begins April 5

Students compete in contest GRANVILLE — On March 11, 11 students from Putnam County High School competed in the Northern Illinois Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (NIAATSP) Cultural Interpretation Contest.

The contest was held in the auditorium of Mendota High School. The contest categories include poetry recitation, music-vocal or instrumental, dance-traditional or modern and art.

There were more than 50 participants in the contest from Amboy, Mendota and

Putnam County.

Michael Dzierzynski, a sophomore at PCHS, won first place in the art-replica category with his drawing of a cathedral in Segovia, Spain. Rebecca Ramey, a sophomore at PCHS, won third place in the art-creative work category with her quilling of a skull from the Day of the Dead. The other participants from Putnam County were Madi Bauer, Molly Boyd, Megan Brooker, Emily Bruch, Samantha Curry, Tia Green, Ethan Phillips, Livia Sanchez and Carter Trone.

PERU — Parents, mark your calendars: April 5 is the day Carus Corporation will begin registering students for their annual Summer Science Camp.

The free camp, which is open to students entering sixth grade in the fall, will take place June 5-9.

This year, St. Bede has agreed to house the camp, with the Academy’s Chemistry Department head, Dan Fitzpatrick, leading as camp director.

Carus is also partnering with the Canal Corridor Association for Camp Day at the canal, where campers will be treated to a science-filled canal boat ride and mule meet and greet.

Galetti completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Festival 56 announces Americorps volunteer opportunities

PRINCETON — Learning Stage, the education committee of the Princeton Theatre Group, has three AmeriCorps positions open for the summer 2017 season. The successful applicants will be on site from June 1 through Aug. 6. AmeriCorps volunteers volunteer 300 hours and receive approximately $3,000 separated into a living stipend and a college tuition waver.

Camp 56 will be the primary responsibility for one volunteer, with another volunteer providing limited support. Camp responsibilities include programming, supervision of campers ages 8–18, paperwork, and communicating with parents and

The other two volunteers will be responsible for multiple educational platforms. They will serve as moderators for three venues: “Meet The Plays,” a panel discussion with directors, technical staff, and genre experts concerning the upcoming season; “Basic Bill,” a 10-minute lesson on the life and times of Shakespeare, including the play “The Comedy of Errors,” to be presented before each of nine performances; and “Opening Night Talkbacks,” five post-performance discussions with the actors, production staff and directors.

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

Source of Water: HENNEPIN PWDTo determine Hennepin's susceptibility to groundwater contamination, the Illinois Rural Water Association conducted a well site survey in October, 2002. Based on the information obtained in this document, there are 13 potential sources of groundwater contamination that could pose a hazard to groundwater utilized by Hennepin's community water supply. These include 1 chemical handling facility, 1 manufacturing process, 1 boat yard, 1 sales store, 2 onsite sludge disposals, 2 injection wells, 2 water treatment plants, and 3 above ground fuel storage tanks. In addition, information provided by the Leaking Underground Storage Tank and Remedial Project Management Sections of the Illinois EPA indicated sites with on-going remediation that might be of concern.According to the Hennepin PWD facility, LTV Steel Co. and the associated injection well and water treatment plant have been sold to the International Steel Group. However, the sludge disposal associated with this site is no longer active.Based upon this information, the Illinois EPA has determined that the Hennepin Community Water Supply's source water is susceptible to contamination. As such, the Illinois EPA has provided 5-year recharge area calculations for the wells. The land use within the recharge areas of the wells was analyzed as part of this susceptibility determination. This land use includes residential, commercial and agricultural properties.In 2010, Hennepin PWD received Non-Compliance Advisories (NCAs) for bacteriological detections in wells #3 and #5 and subsequently a violation notice (VN) for well #5. Resolution of this NCA and the VN resulted in a Compliance Commitment Agreement (CCA) with the Illinois EPA, in that well #5 no longer being used as a potable water source. Well #3 was inspected by an engineering company and the NCA has now been resolved, however monitoring data is continually being tracked in regards to all active potable wells at Hennepin PWD.

RVP presents ‘Marvelous Wonderettes Caps and Gowns’ HENRY — River Valley Players will present “Marvelous Wonderettes Caps and Gowns” April 22-23 and 28-30 at St. John’s Community Center in Henry.

The cast will include Christine Gaspardo as Betty Jean, Deanne Crook as Missy, Samantha Farb as Suzy and Cheyene Sunken as Cindy Lou. These four “Marvelous” girls are back on stage to delight with music, nostalgia and their quirky sense of humor.

This newest show, titled the “The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns ‘58,” chronicles the girls’ graduation day (1958). There is nothing more entertaining than hearing these amazing four actors sing those glorious harmonies, therefore connecting us to the past with songs we all loved and grew up with. Featuring “Rock around the Clock,” “At the Hop,” “Personality,” “What a Wonderful World” and more.

There are several ticket options: Friday, April 28, is the “show only” performance at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17. A variety of homemade desserts will be available to purchase prior to the show and during intermission.

Tickets for the “dinner theatre package” are $35, which includes the show and catering by “The Meeting Place,” offering a meal that includes a salad bar, a buffet dinner offering variety of entrees, dessert, coffee, tea and three beverage choices. Dinner for the Saturday performances is served at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is served at 12:30 p.m. for the Sunday matinee.

The next card party will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in the Hennepin Park District Community Room.
