State of the Cities: Growth and challenges in the Illinois Valley IVAC luncheon details progress across the region

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com NORTH UTICA — With almost 200 representatives from the communities of the Illinois Valley in attendance, the Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce’s (IVAC) State of the Cities luncheon highlighted the recent growth of the area and the encouraging prospect of continued development.

IVAC Executive Director Joni Hunt began the event, held March 22 at Grizzly Jack’s Grand Bear Resort, by saying the fifth annual luncheon had set an attendance record for the second straight year.

Hunt shared statistics showing IVAC’s efforts to grow and expand its reach within the Illinois Valley have been as successful as the projects of the communities it helps represent.

Among other encouraging numbers, she reported 57 new members have joined IVAC in the past year and spoke of the increased number of ribbon cuttings for new businesses. She also spoke of the successes of their 40 Under 40 and youth mentoring programs.

“The number of recent new businesses opening within the Illinois Valley shows there’s an increased interest in investing in our community,” Hunt said.

The event was described as an informative gathering of area business leaders for a progress report on current and future community programs and projects given by local government officials.

Speakers included Ottawa City Commissioner Tom Ganiere, Peru Mayor Scott Harl, Spring Valley Mayor Walt Marini, North Utica Village President David Stewart, and Hennepin Village President Kevin Coleman.

Road and water improvement projects and other infrastructure work were common topics among the speakers. In addition, each community is continuing to develop plans for future improvements and an increase in community and recreational events and attractions.

Hennepin Village President Coleman began by saying he was proud that Hennepin was a part of the IVAC community and its continuing successes.

Hennepin recently made improvements to its water district at a cost of $1.2 million. Coleman discussed the comprehensive improvements made during Hennepin’s $850,000 road improvement project, which included upgrades to the water mains, hydrants and curbing in the area, as well as the addition of a bike path.

Coleman then discussed a problem near Hennepin that ultimately affects the entire Illinois Valley: the partly-demolished steel mill.

“Anyone who’s been by there knows it looks like a disaster. I’ve also seen it from the air, and I can tell you, it looks 10 times worse from above,” he said.

He spoke of how the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will inspect the site for asbestos and lead paint, which might be drifting over to Hennepin. Coleman also mentioned previous water pollution in the village caused by dumping at the mill, which then leached into the village’s water supply.

Another challenge related to the former steel mill is the ongoing court battle between the owners of

the site and Marquis Energy over access to a railroad spur.

“Identifying ownership of the mill is difficult, and this could be tied up in court for years. It’s an eyesore to Hennepin, and although it’s a prime area for industrial development, it’s worthless as it sits. We’re losing potential jobs because we can’t show it as it is now,” Coleman said.

While he acknowledged the benefits of the nearby Dixon Waterfowl Refuge and the work of the Wetlands Initiative, Coleman drew understanding laughter from leaders of other communities as he described the environmental challenges posed by the upcoming project, which will include a small bridge connecting Hennepin to the refuge area.

“Here we are in Illinois, losing jobs and people to Indiana, and we’ve got to complete a study about where the Indiana bats are living in Hennepin,” he said, jokingly.

Spring Valley Mayor Marini described his city’s new $12 million waste water treatment plant. Additionally, $500,000 was spent to improve the water treatment plant. The upgrades were to improve both efficiency and quality well into the future.

Students bring historical figures to life Putnam County fifth-graders create a Living Wax Museum

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — History is full of remarkable people, fantastic inventions and world-changing events, but it can suffer from an unfortunate reputation as a collection of names and dates found in dusty old books.

However, more than 50 students at Putnam County Elementary School (PCES) have learned how to breathe life into history with their Living Wax Museum. Held on March 29, the third annual educational event created a personal connection as the fifth-grade students immersed themselves in both the lives and looks of their assigned historical figures.

“They’ve worked on this project for a month, and we like it because it’s student-led and they can follow their interests,” fifth-grade teacher Monica Frund said.

After selecting which historical figure they wanted to represent, students had to then research their backgrounds, achievements and legacies. JOSEPH ‘JOE’ LUTES UTICA — Joseph “Joe” A. Lutes, 67, of rural Utica died Sunday, March 25, 2018, at his residence.

Joe was born Sept. 24, 1950, in Spring Valley to Edwin and Bertha (Russell) Lutes, the second youngest of 17. He married Wilma Munson in the Waltham Presbyterian Church almost 40 years ago.

Joe attended Illinois Valley Community College. He was drafted and served as a medic in the U.S. Army then came home and was an EMT for McNabb Ambulance (now Putnam County Ambulance). He was a steel worker at LTV, Hennepin, for over 30 years. Joe worked for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources after the mill closed.

Joe enjoyed jogging, yard work and squirrel watching. He also loved to travel to visit his brothers and sisters all over the country. Joe loved his best buddy, Oliver Brown Dog. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Lutes of Utica; one son Evan Lutes of Utica; two daughters, Sarah (Josh Seldal) Lutes of DeKalb and Jamie Lutes of Peoria; seven sisters, Barbara Colwell, Mary Colwell, Sally (Don Rick) Reaska, Linda (Henry) Bates, Carol (Dean) Ehnle, Rosemary (Gary) Morris and June Underwood; five brothers, Donald (Maggie) Lutes, William (Linda) Lutes, Richard Lutes, Jim (Brenda) Lutes and Edwin (Pat) Lutes Jr; and two grandchildren, Mia and Bree.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Gloria Rehm and Blanche Smith; and two brothers, Ronnie and Bob. Services were held Thursday, March 29, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with the Rev. Karen Karczewski officiating. Burial was in the Waltham Cemetery, Utica. A presentation of the American flag honoring his military service in the U.S. Army was also held. Visitation was held prior to the service.

Other recent improvements in Spring Valley include a new maintenance garage and upgrades to the library, city hall, street lights and parks. Proceeds from video gaming are being used to improve the sidewalks. The city is using a half-cent sales tax to improve its roads. Marini also spoke of his city’s efforts to remove and demolish unsightly properties.

“Spring Valley also welcomed 10 new businesses this past year, and we have two more community projects in development,” he said.

Marini also discussed the improvements made at St. Margaret’s Hospital and the $16 million construction project at St. Bede Academy.

“We’ve also joined forces with LaSalle, Peru and Oglesby for a shared dispatch center, and we’re in the early stages of working towards a shared police facility. The fact we can come together and talk about such a thing is simply amazing.

We’re seeing a growing regionalism, and we’re committed to a progressive future,” he said.

The indispensable craft of the politician F

or the most part, we Americans value expertise.

We want our physicians to possess knowledge and experience.

We want our lawyers to know the law inside out. We want our clergymen, our engineers, our farmers to bring the kind of proficiency and skill to their work that comes only with familiarity and practice.

So here’s a question. Why is it that the more expertise politicians’ gain in their field, the more we deride them?

I’ve been involved in politics, in one way or another, for most of my life. That makes me a politician.

And I’ve had more than a few people refuse to shake my hand because they believed that might somehow taint them.

Politicians, many Americans think, are looking out for themselves, beholden to special interests and party leaders, and incapable of working for the common good.

Politicians may disappoint us, frustrate us, or even anger us. They certainly make mistakes. But here’s the thing: we cannot solve our problems at any level — local, state or federal — without skilled politicians. They’re indispensable to the

I’ve had a good vantage point to observe successful American politicians over the decades, and I’ve come to believe the craft of politics requires certain characteristics.

Not every politician possesses them, but the good ones — and there are plenty of good politicians — strive for them.

First, they’re attuned to the moods of the people and to shifts in public opinion. This is not a bad thing — their job, after all, is to represent us. At the same time, they adhere to certain beliefs: they have faith in this country and its future, and they often hold a vision for what its success will look like. They believe it can make progress.

They also know that progress will not come easily. They understand they’ll face setbacks, failure, and hardship, but they persevere in the American way of governing because it can make a lot of things possible.

They search for a path forward, and for a remedy to a problem.

They tend to be articulate, adept at influencing others, and at times inspirational. But they are also pragmatic, and prepared to adjust, compromise, and improvise in order to move policy in the direction they’d like to see it go.

They may pursue the perfect, but most of them know they won’t get there, and will have to be satisfied with incremental progress. Very rarely do we advance in leaps and bounds.

They’re comfortable holding authority and responsibility, and because they recognize that they share these burdens with others, they respect their colleagues. They try to be civil with them, since they understand the dynamic nature of politics — that you don’t have permanent enemies or allies and that your foe one day may be a comrade the next.

And while they know the value of coming together in unity and may even strive for it, they understand that it’s rarely achievable. Indeed, they expect criticism, appreciating that it comes with the territory and is one sign of the vitality of the

democracy we live in.

Finally, good politicians understand that politics consists of a lot more than running for election. It has to be practiced every day in a democracy. We don’t live in a perfect world, and we can’t attain one. But in the end, politics is about striving to get there — to make the world, or at least this country, better.

The best politicians understand that this requires inclusivity, that all groups in every part of the nation have to be taken into account, that many interests have to be balanced, if the U.S. is going to succeed and be secure. They retain a fundamental faith in the people of the country.

They do not give up on America.

I don’t want to suggest either that I think all politicians possess these qualities, or that any politician enjoys them all. Yet these characteristics are what mastery of the craft of politics demands, and they come only with time and experience.

Imposing tariffs would hurt, not help, U.S. jobs T

rade laws and, ultimately, imposing tariffs are designed to protect American interests and jobs. That’s a concept everyone can agree on.

But what happens when those laws and tariffs have the opposite effect? That’s an issue that’s playing out in D.C. with the Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission.

A lone newsprint mill in Washington state, owned by a New York hedge fund, brought a complaint to the International Trade Commission alleging unfair trade practices against Canadian producers of newsprint.

Most likely the paper on which you are reading this was produced in Canada.

This year, the Department of Commerce has imposed two preliminary tariffs that have increased the price of newsprint for some

newspapers by more than 30 percent. This summer, both agencies will explore whether this temporary tariff should become permanent.

If this happens, trade laws that are intended to protect American jobs and interests will have the opposite effect.

For newspapers, staff and newsprint are the largest expenses.

Faced with those kinds of increases, newspaper publishers throughout Illinois and the rest of the country will have to make hard decisions that will ultimately impact the coverage of local issues and the staff that report on those issues.

There isn’t enough newsprint produced in the U.S. to meet the demand of the industry, and given the fact that newsprint consumption has dropped by more than 75 percent since 2000, no U.S. producer is going to invest in starting a newsprint mill. Mills cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build and take years to come into full production.

If these tariffs are made permanent, the New York hedge fund wins as it now has increased the value of its asset, and the federal government wins as tariffs collected go to the Department of Commerce.

Sadly, the country will lose as local newspaper employees will be impacted, and those people, events and issues that newspapers report on will lose as well.

Max Armstrong addresses Rotary’s Agri-Business Night

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — It took several years to arrange, but the Putnam County Rotary was finally able to welcome legendary agriculture broadcaster Max Armstrong to its annual Agri-Business Night on March 29.

For more than 30 years, Armstrong provided the voice of agriculture at Chicago’s WGN radio station. He is now the producer and host of the popular syndicated programs “Farm Progress America” and “Max Armstrong’s Midwest Digest.”

“We’re thrilled to be able to finally bring Max to Putnam County,” Putnam County Rotary President Debbie Buffington said at the event hosted at Putnam County High School.

The Putnam County Record (PCR) was able to spend a few minutes with Armstrong before the evening got underway, and he was asked about the current state and future of agriculture. The interview follows:

PCR: How has agriculture changed over the course of your career?

Armstrong: It’s constant change,

and technology is a big part of that. We’ve had some very rapid advancements of late in technology.

The beautiful thing is it’s increasing our productivity so dramatically and allowing us to grow bigger and bigger crops. The bad news is that we’ve gotten a little in front of the demand, quite frankly.

We’ve produced big crops for several years in a row, and we’ve gotten confirmation from a government report that we’re cutting back our acreage this year. Farmers intend to reduce both the corn and soybean acreage this year. Some of that is responding to market prices, some of that is responding to the bankers, and some of it may be in response to the weather if we continue to have wet weather into April.

What do you think of the next generation of farmers coming up through organizations such as the FFA.?

Armstrong: I can’t say enough about it, it’s just fantastic. It’s not only bringing along the next gener-

And that may be even more important because they’re developing leaders for a variety of professions and hopefully our local economies can draw them back. I think the key is, many of these young people are not only going to be corporate leaders, but leaders in our government as well.

I hope they’re not turned off by what’s going on these days with the partisanship and fighting we see in Washington and that it doesn’t discourage them, because we need them badly. FFA is helping develop young leaders with a work ethic and morality, and there are going to be some great young people coming out of there. That’s why I’m a big supporter of FFA.

what I call the “smoke and mirrors” marketing of food. Food companies are playing word games and making claims they can’t prove. If you walk through a supermarket, it’s one aisle after another of marketing that’s deceptive. It may not be unlawful, but in my mind, it’s unethical.

What are the agriculture industry’s biggest challenges?

Armstrong: In my opinion, it’s a

misunderstanding of what we need to farm and it’s a very serious challenge. People don’t trust science.

Surveys show that people don’t believe scientists anymore. That’s a problem. It’s a problem because we need all of the scientific advances, and we need all of the technology to continue to ratchet up the production to feed the growing population.

Every hour we’re adding 10,000 people to the population of the world. Think about that, every hour. Over the course of every day, we’re increasing the population by a quarter-of-a-million people, every day. We need to talk about water resources, where we’re going to put all these people, and how we’re

coming. I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’re going to continue to wrap our arms around conservation practices which increase our sustainability. So many farmers are embracing them and will continue to do so.

I saw an interesting photograph recently of Amish tobacco farmers in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. There are about 7,000 acres of tobacco in that county, and they were using a no-till planter to put tobacco into a cover crop. It was a horse-drawn planter and built there in the Amish community. It shows that we’re really embracing sustainability all across the ag sector, and it’s also being demanded by consumers.

Special Olympics announces Bocce competition and annual spring games track and field event on April 14 LASALLE — The annual Special Olympics Region A Bocce competition will be held on Saturday, April 14, in Howard Fellows Stadium at LaSalle-Peru High School.

About 300 athletes and unified partners from throughout the northwestern and central Illinois are expected to compete.

Local participating agencies are: Hall High School, Horizon House, IV Family Coop, Lincoln Junior High in LaSalle, L-P High School, Northbrook Elementary, Ottawa Eagles, Ottawa Friendship and Putnam County High School.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:30 a.m. Athletes will participate in a variety of events that include: traditional singles, doubles, team

and unified doubles, and team competition.

Special Olympics Illinois Region A will also host its annual Spring Games Track and Field event at Hall High School on Saturday, April 28.

More than 200 athletes are expected at this event. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m.

This is a big year for Special Olympics as they will celebrate their 50th anniversary since the first event was held at Soldier Field in Chicago in 1968.

The public is invited to both events. There is no entry fee.

The AARP Smart Driver Course is a classroom driver refresher course designed especially for drivers age 50 and over.

This program aims to help community members retain their driving competency. They will learn driving strategies, understand the effects of aging on driving, reduce the chance of having an accident and know when to retire from driving.

ticipants will receive a certificate that can be presented to their automobile insurance holder that may entitle them to a discount.

Hennepin church celebrates 150 years HENNEPIN — St. Patrick’s parish in Hennepin celebrated its 150-year anniversary on March 17.

The evening began with Mass and the baptism of its newest member, Silvia Anne Boggio, the daughter of Frank and Heather Boggio. Following Mass, the parishioners enjoyed a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dinner of corned beef and cabbage. A written history of the church, composed by lifelong parish member Terry Judd, was provided. Lifelong members who were in attendance at the dinner were honored.

The village of Hennepin has Catholic roots. It was named after Father Louis Hennepin, who first explored along the Illinois River under Robert de La Salle in 1680, nearly 140 years before it was incorporated. Missionaries of faith would visit the village at intervals depending on the needs of the community.

It was not until 1852 that the first Catholic building was erected and was named St. Anthony Church. In 1868 the church received parish status from the diocese of Chicago. There are no known pictures of the original St. Anthony’s. More than 50 years later in 1902, a second church was built. The Dore family donated the

new church and it was renamed St. Patrick in memory of their ancestor Patrick Dore who emigrated from Ireland. The hall and church are still standing today.

The hall is now used as the public library and the church is a private residence. The current St. Patrick church was completed in 1990.

Much of the furnishings from the old St. Patrick church building, including stained glass windows, side and high altars from the were incorporated into the new church. St. Patrick Parish is located on 920 E. Dore Drive with Fr. Patrick DeMeulemeester as pastor.

HENRY — Following news of the chartering of the Chief Senachwine Chapter on Feb. 5 by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, plans began for the first organized meeting for this new DAR chapter, established for Henry and the surrounding areas.

The official chapter meeting and celebration will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at the First Presbyterian Church in Henry, 511 Wirt St. Installation of chapter officers will be held with state officials in attendance. Two dozen members and prospective members will attend, and state and local guests will join in celebrating the establishment of this 105th Illinois DAR chapter.

Decorations will match the blue-buff-andgold theme of the National Society, reminding members of the colors of the uniforms of Revolutionary War regular soldiers, especially that worn by General Washington.

Putnam County preschool screenings GRANVILLE — The LaSalle/Putnam Educational Alliance for Special Education (L.E.A.S.E.) Cooperative and the Putnam County School District will offer a preschool screening from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 26 and 27.

The screenings will be held at the Putnam County Primary School in Granville. A parent must accompany their child to the screening.

Putnam County children who will be 3 years old on or before April 26 are eligible for screening for fall enrollment. The screening will cover small and large muscle development, speech, language, hearing, vision, cognition, and social skills. Parents who have other developmental concerns about their child can discuss those during the parent interview.

All Putnam County families with

age-eligible preschoolers are encouraged to take advantage of this screening. Results will be used to determine eligibility for the early childhood program at the primary school building in Granville. Students who aren’t eligible will be placed on a waiting list until after the August screening.

Preschool for All is a state funded preschool program from the Illinois Board of Education and all rules and regulations are followed for the grant support. It offers developmentally appropriate experiences for young children to strengthen their skills for success later on in school and includes hands-on activities presented in a positive and encouraging learning environment.

Free NASA workshops for teachers and informal educators LASALLE — Two upcoming NASA workshops will be hosted by the LaSalle Public Library.

Especially for teachers, librarians and other youth leaders, these hands-on workshops provide training that will help participants teach earth and environmental science modules in the classroom or in informal settings like libraries or at youth group events. Susan Koehler, education professional development specialist at NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, will be facilitating both workshops. The registration deadline April 13.

The first workshop, “Picking Up STEAM with Moon Rocks Lunar and Meteorite Certification - Borrow Moon Rock Samples,” will be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24. In this workshop, participants will learn how to use lunar rock samples to engage youth in STEM lessons and activities. Engage young and old alike at programs that teach physical and earth science

content using rock samples. Participants, who are certified through this workshop, may borrow the lunar and meteorite samples from NASA Johnson Space Center to use in their formal institutions that meet NASA security requirements.

The second workshop, “Environmental Science … Water and Soil,” will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Wednesday, April 25. Ideal activities for springtime, in this hands-on workshop, participants will learn to facilitate soil and water experiments that can be adapted to any youth grade level, and make exciting programming for youth organizations and for family events. All NASA modules meet Next Generation Science Standards, and can generally be completed with simple, inexpensive materials and/or recyclables. Teach youth programs at your or teach colleagues with information learned at this event.

Kohler is the current education professional development specialist at Glenn Research Cen-

ter and serves the states of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota. She has more than 25 years of progressively responsible K-12 educational leadership experience. She has served as assistant principal, principal, curriculum director, math/science consultant and assistant superintendent. She taught science for 13 years at the high school level. Her expertise in STEM and professional development is combined with her knowledge of new technology trends and innovative instructional strategies.

An open house to celebrate the 80th birthday of Betty Johnson will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Goldasich Hall in the McNabb Fire Station.

Betty Haws was born April 15, 1938, when gasoline was 10 cents a gallon, a loaf of bread was 9 cents, ballpoint pens were first invented, FDR founded the organization that would become the March of Dimes and Orson Wells shook up the world with his radio adaptation of “War of the Worlds!” But among the most important events of that year was the arrival of Betty into the Haws family of Magnolia, later joined by younger brother, Schuyler Haws.

Betty attended a small country school through sixth grade, Lostant School until her sophomore year and then Swaney High School, graduating in the class of 1956. She received her nursing degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1960, serving as an RN for 50 years before retiring to become even more active in community volunteer work. Along the way, she also took an active part in farming in Knox County, with her husband of 20 years, Ben Johnson.

Sharing with her daughter, Lisa, a passion for helping others, Betty now donates her time to the Backpack Ministry, New Hope Parish, Red Cross

Public Hearing Notice The Village of Mark will hold a public hearing on April 17, 2018 at 6:30 pm, in the Mark Village Hall, 2 Park Street, Mark, IL to provide interested parties an opportunity to express their views on the proposed federal funded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) project. Persons with disabilities or non-English speaking persons who wish to attend the public hearing and need assistance should contact North Central Illinois Council of Governments (NCICG) at 815-433-5830 no later than April 12, 2018. Every effort will be made to make reasonable accommodations for these persons.

On or about April 20, 2018, The Village of Mark intends to apply to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for a grant from the State CDBG program. This program is funded by Title 1 of the federal Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, as amended. These funds are to be used for a community development project that will include the following activities: reconstructing one block of Hennepin St. The total amount of CDBG funds to be requested is $192,993.95. The amount of CDBG funds proposed to be used for activities that will benefit low-to-moderate income persons is $102,827.18. The Village of Mark also proposes to expend $129,940.85 in non-CDBG funds on the project. These nonCDBG funds will be derived from the following sources: the Village general fund.

Information related to this project will be available for review prior to the public hearing as of April 12, 2018 at the NCICG office at 613 W. Marquette Street, Ottawa, IL between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. Interested citizens are invited to provide comments regarding these issues either at the public hearing or by prior written statement. Written comments should be submitted to NCICG no later than April 16, 2018 in order to ensure placement of such comments in the official record of the public hearing proceedings. A plan to minimize displacement and provide assistance to those displaced has been prepared by Village of Mark and is also available to the public. UTICA

Woofstock pet adoption festival set for May 20

UTICA — The Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center will host a new pet adoption festival called Woofstock on Sunday, May 20, on the lodge grounds.

The goal of the event is to help get dogs adopted from local shelters and pet rescue organizations.

Participating in the event will be: Illinois Valley Animal Rescue (IVAR), ReGap (Greyhound Rescue of Mendota), Pet Project (dog and cat adoption agency from Marseilles) and Tails (DeKalb Humane Society). There will also be brief

educational seminars by Fetching Frieda’s, Starved Rock Pet Resort and the Starved Rock Kennel Club on caring for rescued animals, why pets should be spayed/neutered and other topics.

The public is invited to bring donations from the IVAR wish list (www.illinoisvalleyanimalrescue. net). Each item donated earns an entry to win an hourly pet-related door prize! Donations will be divided between shelters.

Woofstock begins at 10 a.m. in front of the lodge with a “Blessing

of the BowWows” followed by a pet parade. All well-behaved dogs (on a leash) are welcome to attend with their owner. The parade’s grand marshal will be Cash (an adorable Springer Spaniel) owned by Amy and Karl Trimble, the Lodge’s concessionaires. After the parade, Kevin Kramer will be playing woof-friendly songs on his guitar on the pool patio. There will be a “pool PAW-TY” with drink stations and treats for dogs and food and drinks for guests. A variety of pet-related vendors will be there to share infor-

mation, offer discount coupons and other dog-friendly snacks. Dogs are allowed on the pool patio, Veranda and outside the Lodge. Hungry canines are encouraged to check out sweet potato treats, ice cream and more on the Lodge’s “Doggie Delights” menu available on the Veranda.
