Attorney: ‘These buildings are a cancer on your community’ Board looks to target the owners of derelict structures

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — The owners of derelict properties in Hennepin could soon be facing two options. The first would be to repair and maintain their properties, while the second would be to have the village take ownership and have the structures demolished.

During the March 20 Hennepin Village Board meeting, members discussed the situation with Sheryl Churney, village attorney.

“These buildings are a cancer on your community,” Churney said.

“They lower property values and they tend to spread. This can be a very effective way to deal with them and it sends a message to others,” she told the board.

Churney said other communities have used a “fast-track demolition proceeding” to bring the owners of derelict properties to court if certain criteria are met. Criteria include the buildings being three stories or less and being vacant and open, such as having broken doors or windows that allow access by either people or animals.

If the buildings are deemed “an immediate and continuing danger or nuisance,” legal proceedings can be initiated. All owners with an interest in the property would be contacted through certified mail, notices would appear in the newspaper, and a sign would be placed on the property. If no action is taken within 30 days, ownership could be

transferred to the village.

Owners could also be asked to transfer ownership directly to the village to avoid court proceedings. She said demolition costs Sheryl vary, but typically Churney Hennepin run between $8,000 to $15,000. village Churney said anothattorney er option would be to force the owner to demolish their derelict building, but added it could be a long and costly process.

The village would recoup their expenses by selling the property to an owner who would construct a new home. The new owner would then begin paying property taxes on it, and with a more attractive neighborhood, surrounding property values would also be higher.

Board member Quentin Buffington warned against unexpectedly high demolition costs that the village might struggle to recoup.

“This is our responsibility. No one wants to make these decisions, but that’s what we’re here for, and we have to do something,” board member Karyn Christiansen said.

This issue will appear on next month’s meeting agenda.

Streets and engineering Because of the size and scope of last year’s major street renovation project, Hennepin engineer Bill Shafer advised there be no project

this year. He said while the village will be patching and filling cracks in some areas this summer, he believes there isn’t a need for any large-scale work.

Engineer Ken Giordano reported he had heard from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources that all of the requirements for the footbridge to the wetlands had been met and that the permit was being processed.

The next step will be to pay $7,590 to a boring company to analyze the area’s soil.

“This is the next step and is part of the budgeted work. The bridge company can’t proceed with their design work without the soil information,” he said of the project that was first approved in the fall of 2017.

Security cameras The village has taken delivery of a high-quality security camera. Buffington said the camera’s video feed is being inspected and that it will soon be installed on High Street for further testing.

Other items • Buffington announced the 303 Band will be the musical act for the village’s annual Thunder on the Illinois Fourth of July celebration.

• The villagewide garage sales are scheduled for April 26-27.

• The next Hennepin Village Board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. April 17.

Highway memorializes brothers’ service Section of Route 6 named for Kaszynskis

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com PERU — The section of Route 6 from Mary Street in Spring Valley to Harrison Street in Peru is now known as the Kaszynski Brothers Memorial Highway following a ded-

ication sponsored by state Sen. Sue Rezin on March 30.

The honor was bestowed upon the family because of their six sons who served in World War II. Richard, Bernard, Florian, Thaddeus and Alex Kaszynski were all in the Army and served in the Pacific Theater. The last surviving brother, Chester, served in the Merchant Marines and also served during the Korean conflict.

Gathering at the Peru Fire Station for the dedication ceremony were Rezin, many Kaszynski family members, city officials, members of local veterans groups and also Anthony Witzak. In 2016, Witzak shared a similar honor when a section of Route 251 was named in honor of the seven Witzak brothers who served during World War II.

Rezin also empathized with the feelings their parents must have endured as they worried about the safe return of their sons.

“I want to thank the Kaszynskis, every veteran, those living and who have gone before us, and the men and women who are serving our country now. It is an honor and a privilege to share their story. It is one that will live through history,” Rezin said.

Following the ceremony, Kaszynski was presented with a copy of the memorial sign that has been placed along the route.

“I just want everyone to know what a great honor this is for our family,” one of the many Kaszynski family members in attendance said afterward.

‘It’s setting up for an incredibly busy spring’ Interview with Jeanne Payne, president of the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Prior to the Putnam County Rotary’s Ag Night dinner featuring speaker Jeanne Payne, president of the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association (IFCA), Payne spoke in an interview about the current trends and challenges her industry and ag producers are facing.

According to its website, the IFCA’s mission is “to assist and represent the crop production supply and service industry while promoting the sound stewardship and utilization of agricultural inputs.”

The group helps ag producers stay informed regarding legislative updates, regulatory alerts, items of interest, training, management and application guidelines.

“It’s probably been a record slow fertilizer season for Illinois,” Payne said.

“We had only about 30 percent of our normal fertilizer applications done statewide last fall, so it’s setting up for an incredibly busy spring,” she said.

“It was a little better up here, but central Illinois was really slow, so that has set up a logistically tight supply line. There’s plenty of supplies, but the chance of getting it everywhere it needs to be in such a short amount of time will be a challenge because every single farmer in Illinois is going to want it at the same time,” she said.

Payne also said fertilizer prices have increased and added that situation won’t help the logistical issues because farmers are also facing the challenge of decreased grain prices.

“It’s not really welcome news because farmers are looking at struggling grain prices that are much lower than they’d like them to be, and they’re also seeing higher fertilizer prices,” she said.

Payne said IFCA members are ready to help ag producers face these challenges.

“The thing we can’t control is manpower. We are always looking for good employees. There’s plenty of equipment out there, but there’s only so many qualified people to put in it and, of course, we have a lot of regulations to deal with. So there will be challenges for our members, but they always get it done,” she said.

During her presentation to Putnam County Rotarians and their guests, Payne also discussed how the IFCA is helping to reduce nutrient losses in the soil through the management of nitrogen and phosphorous applications.

“We’re managing nitrogen and phosphorous more closely through rates of application and timing. It’s made a difference already, especially with nitrate levels in the rivers of Illinois. The farmers here have a big role to play in that because they make those decisions,” she said.

Payne said the goal is to get the fertilizer into the soil when it needs

it most and to not let it be out there when it’s not being accessed by the crop.

“We also don’t want to apply more fertilizer than what’s needed for the crop because if the crop doesn’t use it, then it’s lost to the environment.

That’s been one of the major issues we’ve had because in the past, fertilizer has been one of those things you never wanted to be short of, so the tendency was been to put more on because it hasn’t been expensive to do,” she said.

Payne added the IFCA and the fertilizer industry have been hard at work to help farmers learn the proper application amounts and rates.

“We want them to feel comfortable with the new rates because they might be lower than what they’re used to doing. That’s coming from the fertilizer industry and we sell fertilizer, but we don’t want the products we sell ending up in people’s lakes and streams and the Gulf of Mexico because ultimately that’s a bad situation for agriculture to be in,” she said.

During the evening, Payne also discussed how other Midwestern states are currently struggling with the same issues as Illinois, but added that Illinois is doing much better with all of the associated environmental legislation and regulations because it’s moved quickly to address those issues.

“We don’t have as much pressure on us because we’ve made progress, so that’s a good story,” she said.

LUVERNE E. (ENGELBRECHT) BUCHELE HONOLULU, Hawaii — LuVerne Ethel (Engelbrecht) Buchele, 98, a longtime resident of Honolulu, Hawaii, and formerly of Illinois, Virginia, Indiana and California, died gracefully Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at Hale Nohea Adult Residential Care Home in Honolulu.

LuVerne was born Sept. 21, 1920, on the family farm near Onarga, Iroquois County, Ill., to Bernhard H. P. and Frieda C. M. (Seggebruch) Engelbrecht. She was the second of four children. She married U.S. Navy World War II veteran Robert B. Buchele on Oct. 6, 1950, in Graham Taylor Chapel of the Chicago Theological Seminary, at center of the University of Chicago campus. They had three children, Brad, Bette and Jill.

In the tradition of her German ancestors, LuVerne was a Lutheran. During her youth, she was confirmed at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Buckley, by the Rev. Christian Braeunig.

Later, she was a member of Calvary by the Sea ELCA Lutheran Church in Honolulu. During the primary grades, she attended class at Prairie Dell School, a rural one-room schoolhouse in Iroquois County. She graduated from Watseka Community High School, Watseka, in 1938.

Having been awarded a four-year college scholarship by the Illinois General Assembly, LuVerne graduated from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in 1942, with a Bachelor of Science with high honors, in Education and German.

She was a member of Alpha Lambda

Delta national honorary society. Following her World War II military service, in 1947, she earned an Artium Magister degree from the University of Chicago. Subsequently, she was employed as a teacher in Illinois, Indiana and California public schools.

During World War II and prior to marriage, LuVerne E. Engelbrecht worked as a “Rosie the Riveter,” in aviation manufacturing. In 1944, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps, a branch of the U.S. Army known as the WACs, which Gen. Douglas MacArthur famously lauded as, “my best soldiers,” adding, “they worked harder, complained less, and were better disciplined than men.” As a WAC, LuVerne attained the rank of TEC 4, which was equivalent to that of sergeant.

Following training at Wright-Patterson Fields in Ohio, LuVerne was assigned to the 2nd Signal Service Battalion, Arlington Hall Station, in Virginia.

There, she joined the ranks of the fabled “Code Girls,” who behind locked doors broke encrypted enemy communications, an essential contribution towards the Allied Victory that ended World War II. Honorably discharged in 1946, she was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. Ordered to secrecy for 50 years, LuVerne did not reveal her wartime activity as a Cryptanalysis Technician for half a century. She truly

deserved her place of honor amongst The Greatest Generation.

The Buchele family traveled extensively, accompanying Dr. Robert B. Buchele, Professor of Management, University of Hawaii-Manoa, during his many excursions as a visiting professor at both domestic and foreign universities. LuVerne was devoted to her family. She selflessly gave many hours as a faculty wife, a volunteer at schools and for the Girl Scouts. She was also a stalwart and active advocate for the prevention of cruelty to rodeo animals, especially opposing the use of bucking straps.

LuVerne was talented musically, having taught herself to play both piano and ukelele. While in the military, she studied voice and in song, possessed a lovely, clear soprano. She once performed “Un bel di vedremo” from Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly, for recovering troops at a military hospital near Washington, D.C. Even through her last year, she often broke into song, with such favorites as “Edelweiss.” She also enjoyed diverse activities, such as reading, cooking, sewing and gardening. In earlier years, swimming in the Pacific Ocean along the Honolulu coast with Robert was a daily activity.

LuVerne is survived by her daughter, Bette K. Buchele of Honolulu; a grandson, Keith A. (Janice M. Okimoto) Boychuk of Honolulu; a son-in-law, Dr.

Rodney B. Boychuk of Honolulu; a sister, Jeanette C. Engelbrecht (Dr. Walter W.) Whisler of Wilmette; and many nephews, nieces and cousins, all of the U.S. mainland. Local nieces are Penelope J. Engelbrecht and Heidi J. Engelbrecht (Gerald J.) Sobkowiak of Granville.

LuVerne was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert B. Buchele, 2008; a son, Brad L. Buchele, 1959; a daughter, Jill R. Buchele-Boychuk, 1993; a sister, Margie C. T. (Engelbrecht) Benoit, 1997; and locally, a brother, Kenneth W. Engelbrecht, 2003, and his wife, Helen Marie (Hawthorne) Engelbrecht, 2017.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

A private service, with military honors, and inurnment beside LuVerne’s husband, Robert, was held at 1 p.m. March 26 at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl Crater, in Honolulu. The Rev. Dr. Larry A. Grimm, of Bristol Hospice - Hawaii, Honolulu, officiated. Nuuanu Memorial Park and Mortuary, Honolulu, assisted the family with arrangements.

Student body getting younger; college to lease CASE IH tractor OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College Board of Trustees approved tenure for four faculty members March 14 and accepted with regret notices of retirement from Patty Williamson, director of financial aid, and Jean Batson-Turner, human services instructor and program coordinator.

Faculty ear ning tenure were Tammy Landgraf, early childhood education; Willard Mott, agriculture; Heather Knoblauch, nursing; and Andrew Seeger, world languages.

Tenure requires that faculty demonstrate exemplary teaching, contributions to the college and community, and involvement with professional organizations.

Batson-Turner, who led human services since its inception in 2002, will retire May 31.

Williamson, financial aid director since 2009, will retire June 30.

Illinois Valley Symphony celebrating 70th season Gala dinner dance Friday in LaSalle

BY MIKE MURPHY For Shaw Media LASALLE — Friday will be a celebration of the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra’s 70th year of existence, even though the organization’s 69th season isn’t over.

Held at LaSalle’s Celebrations 150, the IVSO’s 70th anniversary gala will be an evening of cocktail attire, dining, dancing and a look ahead the symphony’s past as well as its future.

“Personally, I don’t think we get dressed up enough. It will be a grand gala. We want you to be there. It will be a blast,” said Ottawa’s Andrea Kowalski, president of the IVSO board.

“We’ve never had a gala before.

We’re going all out — to celebrate we have a symphony. It’s really a party.

We wanted to have more than a concert.”

The evening will include din-

ner, with meatless and gluten-free options available, following with dancing to Legenz, a LaSalle-Peru-based band that plays dance and rock ’n’ roll music. Advance tickets must be purchased by Wednesday.

Proceeds will support the IVSO, founded in 1949 with a vision of entertaining and inspiring the community with live music. Members include musicians who reside inside and outside of Starved Rock Country.

“In the last 20 years, we’ve seen a growth in the quality and demand of the music perfor med,” said Barbara Lukancic, Spring Valley, IVSO’s longtime business manager and a former musician.

“We are complementing our local players with outside the area players, performing more challenging music, and featuring more soloists.

The challenge is to find enough players who are available.”

Following the 2018 departure of Dr. Lucia Matos of Northern Illinois University, the orchestra’s music director and conductor, different musicians have served as conductors in each of the 2018-19 concerts;

“This season we are having a conductor search with five guest conductors, each taking a concert,” Lukancic said in an email interview.

“Following each concert, the players are asked to give their revue.

After the final May performance, the search committee will analyze the player’s comments and take

into consideration other issues of compatibility, then present a recommendation to the board and proceed from there.

“Ten years ago, we had a conductor search with five conductors vying for the position. Lucia Matos was selected. We are hopeful to have a long relationship with a new conductor.”

The gala will be a chance for the IVSO to raise some money and bring its supporters and members together for camaraderie, Lukancic said.

“We’ve had successful wine tastings and trivia nights as fundraisers,” she added. “At the 50th celebration, an endowment was started with a donation by Kevin McMahon, the resident conductor at the time.

(Classical violinist) Rachel Barton Pine, who was soloist at the final 50th season concert and attended 50th celebration, also made a generous donation to help start the endowment.

“She returned to solo and challenged the area to increase the endowment, and it did. She was soloist at our 60th and perhaps will be at our 70th.”

GRANVILLE — The Putnam County Educational Foundation (PCEF) has announced the availability of the following scholarships for the 2019–20 school year. All scholarship applications are available from the guidance counsel office at Putnam County High School or online from the PCHS website. Hazel Marie Boyle Memorial Scholarship

Created by the legacy of Hazel Marie Boyle, a long-time teacher and leading citizen in Putnam County, the scholarship is awarded to PCHS graduates attending or planning to attend Illinois Valley Community College, Illinois Wesleyan University or the University of Illinois. The criteria for the scholarship awards is based on the academic achievement and extracurricular/community service records of the applicants. Awards range from $1,000 for IVCC attendees to $2,000 for students attending Illinois Wesleyan or the University of Illinois. Multiple awards will be made.

Durley Boyle Memorial Scholarship

Made possible through the legacy of Walter Durley Boyle, the long-time Putnam County state’s attorney and a leading citizen in Putnam County, the scholarship is awarded to PCHS graduates attending or planning to attend IVCC, Illinois Wesleyan University, Bradley University or the University of Illinois. The criteria for the scholarship awards is based on the academic achievement and extracurricular or community service records of the applicants. Awards range from $1,000 for IVCC attendees to $2,000 for students attending Illinois Wesleyan, Bradley University or the University of Illinois. Multiple awards will be made.

Putnam County Science and Engineering Scholarship The scholarship is available to PCHS graduates attending or planning to attend IVCC, Bradley University or the University of Illinois.

The principle criteria is based on the applicant’s academic and extracurricular/community service records — especially as they relate to mathematics, science and engineering. Recipients may receive awards of as much as $2,000 to attend IVCC or $5,000 to attend Bradley University or the University of Illinois.

Hubert J. “H.J.” Mennie Memorial Scholarship

Made possible by the Mennie family and the Mennie Machine Company in memory of Hubert Mennie, a leading Putnam County and Illinois Valley businessman, the scholarship is awarded to a PCHS graduate pursuing an industrial technology career by attending IVCC or a comparable two-year institution of higher learning. Anne Cioni Memorial Teachers Scholarship

Mike Anders Language Scholarship

This scholarship award of $1,000, made in memory of language teacher Mike Anders, will be given to a PCHS graduate pursuing a liberal arts and sciences degree at an institution of higher learning. The award is based in equal parts on the applicant’s record of academic achievement, community service and extracurricular achievement. Extra consideration will be given to an applicant with either a major or minor in a foreign language.

Eloise Howland Memorial Scholarship

Given in memory of Eloise Howland, a well-known local restauranteur, this award of approximately $250 will be provided to a PCHS graduate residing in Hennepin Township and is based solely on the applicant’s grade point average.

HENNEPIN — Team Hennepin Relay for Life will hold its annual pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday, April 7, at Cindy’s Country Stop Restaurant in Hennepin. This all-you-can-eat breakfast will include Cindy’s famous pancakes, sausage, applesauce and beverage. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for ages 5-12 and under 5 is free. All proceeds will go toward the team’s total for the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life Event in Henry on Friday, April 26.

PC elementary students vote for their favorite Bluestem book HENNEPIN — The fourth- and fifth-grade students participating in the Bluestem Book Award Program, sponsored by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators, voted for their favorite book on March 11.

This is the ninth year for the Bluestem Book Award Program at Putnam County Elementary School in Hennepin. The 39 students who read at least four of the 20 books on the list were eligible to vote for their favorite book. Students also had to discuss the book with Media Paraprofessional Lori Mertel and complete a worksheet on the book.

Fifteen of the 20 books received votes with two books in first place: “Fish in a Tree” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt and “Moo” by Sharon Creech.

The second-place winner was “Diamond Willow” by Helen Frost. All votes were submitted to the state Association of Illinois School Library Educators website, and an

overall favorite within the state of Illinois will be announced.

year-old donors require advance parent permission and can obtain those forms from the school’s office.

River Valley Players is a community theater group founded in 1977 that believes strongly in furthering the arts in education and the community. The qualifying applicant will have provided service to the organization to further this belief.

Application forms are now available from board members or may be obtained by sending a letter of inquiry to River Valley Players, P.O. Box 259, Henry, IL 61537, with a stamped, self-addressed envelope. A form is also available online at www.rvphenry. org.

The application will include a request for a brief summary of the applicant’s background and a two-page essay. Applications are to be completed and submitted to the above River Valley Players address by April 15.

The applicant must have been involved in a minimum of four productions with River Valley Players. Productions are counted from sixth-grade to the present. No productions will be counted prior to sixth-grade.

Involvement shall be considered active service in one or more of the following areas: on-stage performances, set construction, costume committee, technical crew, production crew, orchestra and Board of Directors (junior or senior board member).

The applicant must be in good academic standing, have good character and a positive attitude.

The applicant must plan to attend and be accepted at a two- or four-year college or plan to pursue his or her studies to develop his or her talent at a vocational or trade school.

The applicant must submit a two-page written essay addressing the topic of how the student was involved in River Valley Players and how it has influenced and will continue to influence the applicant’s life.

If no applicant is qualified for the scholarship in a particular year, the scholarship will not be given. An applicant may apply multiple times but may receive the scholarship only once.

The one-year scholarship in the amount of $500 (funded by the late Father W. Breuning and RVP fundraisers) is to be used for tuition, books, fees or other related educational expenses. Usually, only one scholarship is awarded each year.

Meals are available to senior citizens 60 plus at no cost, but donations are appreciated. The meal program is partly funded by donations, so they have a suggested donation of $5 per meal. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.

Despite PC homer, Lady Bruins find their voice

BY TOMMY ROSE news@putnamcountyrecord.com PERU — Even with a lot of the same players as last year’s sectional title winning team, the St. Bede Lady Bruins this season are, in the words of coach Rob Ruppert, “still finding their voice.”

On March 27, however, the Lady Bruins (2-3) sent a loud and clear message to all in an 18-3 four-inning win over the Putnam County Lady Panthers (1-3) in a non-conference matchup at the academy.

“We hit the ball really hard, which

is a good sign,” Ruppert said. “We’d been scuffling a little bit, so it was a good win for us.”

Indeed, the St. Bede bats were so busy that if you took your eyes off of the diamond, you would miss seeing another Lady Bruin cross home plate.

“We told them to attack, go back to their fundamentals and hit the ball hard,” Ruppert said. “Just be patient at the plate and look for your pitch.”

Sophomore center fielder Addison Lee led the way for the St. Bede offense with three runs, three hits and four RBI, while junior Ellyn

Nowakowski (2B) contributed two runs, two hits and three RBI. Maggie Sons, Charleigh Holmes, Gianna Elias and Hayley Short also added to the Lady Bruins’ scoring effort with two RBI each, while Maddie Mudge, Abbie May and Ryann Stoudt chipped in one RBI apiece.

St. Bede broke open the game with a nine-run second inning and closed it out with a six-run fourth.

The Lady Bruins were dominant on defense as well, with winning pitcher Hayley Short working all four innings, allowing four hits, three runs (two earned) and striking

out seven.

“Shorty threw the ball well today, which we expected her to do,” Ruppert said. “She struggled a bit in her first couple of outings, but it’s early in the season, so hopefully she’ll straighten it out.

“Our defense played pretty well.

We made plays when we had to.”

The Lady Panthers started the game with two quick hits by Linzee Fay and Morgan Hundley, but the side was retired just as quickly, followed by a three-up, three-down second inning.

“In that first inning we opened up with so much promise,” Putnam County coach Angie Heiser said.

“We had runners in scoring position right off the bat, we had some kids get some doubles and triples (during the game).

“Just the fact that my players kept trying and didn’t get down on themselves and kept giving us effort was a huge bonus. It shows me they have a lot of fight and they won’t give up.”

The Lady Panthers got their first score in the third inning from an RBI single from Hundley to send Zofie Uzella home.

The highlight for the PC offense came when Megan Wiesbrock smacked a two-run homer over the center-field fence, sending Grace Ebel ahead of her across the plate.

“It felt really good, especially since the most I’ve hit so far was like a bunt and a fly-out to second,” Wiesbrock said. “Otherwise, not much contact.

I just wanted to crush it, stepped up there and thought ‘OK, I’m gonna swing and swing hard’.

“We were kind of down a bit, then that happened out of the blue and that brought us all back together.”

Even more noteworthy was that Wiesbrock and her team could have missed that moment together.

“Megan was a late addition to our team,” Heiser said. “We were looking at a numbers problem (on the roster), maybe having to forfeit a couple of games, when she stepped up and said, ‘OK, I’ll play.’

She’s here out of the goodness of her heart and trying very hard.

“I won’t forget seeing that ball go over the fence, and I’m sure Megan and her teammates won’t either.”

Madelyn Dzierzynski and Megan Wiesbrock of Putnam County will be reunited on the White team, joined by Kelly VanDenBussche of Princeton, Janessa Hart and Gabby Englehaupt of Hall, Saige Barnett and Emily Fordham of Bureau Valley, Maggie Sons and Naomi Ochuba of St. Bede, Aubrie Roda of L-P and Kaye Brown of Midland.

The boys game will include the talents of Kaleb Wright of Putnam County along with Koel Hjerstedt of Princeton, Jimmy DeAngelo of Hall, Kale Barnett and Tyler Gustafson of Bureau Valley, Brady Becker of LaMoille-Ohio and Marcus Winfert of DePue on the White team.

The Putnam County Panthers boys baseball team beat Peoria Heights, 9-1, last week, while splitting with Henry, winning 5-1 and losing 2-1.

Against Peoria Heights, Caleb Tonozzi and Jakob Pyszka led with two hits each, with Tonozzi and Nolan Whitney collecting two RBIs apiece.

The Panthers, leading 2-0 after three innings, broke the game open with four runs in the fourth, adding a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Kyle Gorisek pitched five innings for the win.

Midland States Bank Foundation gives $10,000 to PADS Donation will help to expand facility in Peru EFFINGHAM — Midland States Bank has announced a $10,000 contribution to Illinois Valley Public Action to Deliver Shelter (Illinois Valley PADS). The contribution will go toward supporting its community assistance program.

The Midland States Bank Foundation provides improvements for the general welfare, education and

health in the communities where the bank operates. Since its creation in 2011, the Foundation has contributed more than $715,000 to non-profit organizations throughout Midland’s footprint.

“Eight years ago, we began to set aside a portion of the bank’s profits, donated by our Midland States Bank Foundation, to various community organizations,” said Jeffrey C. Ludwig, president and CEO of Midland States Bancorp Inc. “It is a powerful way for us to give

back to our communities and provide financial support for these important organizations. I am very pleased to see this effort continue today throughout the communities we serve,” Ludwig said.

Illinois Valley PADS serves individuals in need with temporary shelter and assistance in Ottawa and Peru. The funds received will help continue to provide shelter, food and services to people in need.

“As an emergency homeless shelter program, IV PADS has served

LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties for 27 years,” Carol Alcorn, Illinois Valley PADS executive director, said.

“This donation will assist us in building a very needed expansion at our Peru facility by doubling beds, adding more classroom space for our educational opportunities, as well as four rooms designated to housing families as a unit in our program,” Alcorn said.

“We are so appreciative to this generous gift,” she said.
