Firefighters brighten kids’ birthdays during coronavirus stay-at-home days

BY KEVIN CHLUM Shaw Media GRANVILLE — For the first time, Nolan Weddell was going to have an all-kids birthday party and it was going to be held at Elevate Trampoline Park in Peoria.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and recommendations to practice social distancing, his party was canceled.

But thanks to the Granville Fire Department, Weddell’s eighth birthday will be one to be remembered.

Granville Fire Chief Ron Campbell drove by Weddell’s home in Granville late Tuesday morning, March 24, with sirens blaring and lights flashing.

“It made me feel really good and excited,” said Weddell, whose 5-yearold brother, Kael, also was excited by the drive-by.

“His sirens were on and he sang happy birthday to me.”

The fire truck drive-by was scheduled after the Granville Fire Department Facebook page posted Monday evening that it would offer the birthday celebrations.

“Times like these are trying for everyone,” the post read. “We want to

join numerous other fire departments doing something special. Times are especially difficult for kids. They don’t understand why they have to stay inside. They don’t understand why they can’t play with their friends.

They don’t understand why their birthday party is canceled.”

Nolan’s mother, Janelle, saw the post and contacted the fire department even though Nolan’s birthday had already happened on Sunday.

“It was already a day late, but I thought, ‘Boy, that would be cool because this was going to be the first year he had an all-kids birthday party and it got canceled,’” Janelle Weddell said. “Now he’s saying it was the best birthday he’s ever had.

“It’s unbelievably heartwarming.

Thinking of the children and what they’re missing in this time we’re all stuck at home, it’s mind blowing how thoughtful it was.”

Campbell said he saw the idea on the Dalzell Fire Department’s Facebook page and wanted to bring it to Putnam County.

“I thought it was something good for their kids to give them a little bright spot because they’re missing out on so much,” Campbell said.

“My grandson just had a birthday and he was unable to have a party.

I just thought it was a great idea. I asked Dalzell if I could steal it and they said yes.”

Campbell said he’s received a great response so far with eight visits lined up as of March 24.

He had four scheduled on March 24 with four more scheduled through April 11.

Campbell’s Facebook post had 55 comments, 337 likes and 400 shares March 24, while Dalzell’s took off as well with 36 comments, 136 likes and 108 shares.

“It’s taken off,” Campbell said. “It’s been all positive. It has been shared off our page I don’t know how many times from all over the place.”

The Hennepin and Manlius fire departments also posted on Facebook they would offer birthday drive-bys as well.

‘This is a time for all of Illinois to come together’ Sheriff Doyle issues statement on threat to public safety posed by coronavirus Note to readers: Putnam County Sheriff Kevin L. Doyle issued the following statement on March 24 in regard to the coronavirus pandemic:

As we face an unprecedented and growing public safety threat, know that the dedicated first responders in law enforcement will answer the call. Nothing is more important to sheriffs, deputies, chiefs and officers than the health and safety of our neighbors we serve.

But, in the days and weeks ahead,

we ask that you don’t make the jobs of first responders harder.

T he environment is rapidly changing. It is important that citizens follow the advice of their local, regional, state and national health care professionals. While this safety challenge is global in nature, we can all expect our daily lives to be disrupted and impacted.

This is a time for all of Illinois to come together. The members of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association are in contact with one another to implement best practices, share resources and support our communities. Together, sheriffs urge calm, compassion and care.

But we also want the public to know that law enforcement will continue to patrol our neighborhoods and enforce the law. We will

not accept disorder, misconduct or criminal acts. Offenders will be held accountable.

Decisions about incarceration for crimes committed during this emergency period will be done in coordination and consultation with the judicial branch.

The imposition of bail, which is always at the discretion of the local judge and local state’s attorney, will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Our priority, as always, is to discourage misbehavior and ensure that our communities are safe through reasonable criminal justice measures.

For individuals within the criminal justice system. To protect everyone’s health, the Illinois Department of Corrections and sheriffs across Illinois have made

adjustments and limited visitation at local jails and correctional facilities. These measures are temporary and will be re-evaluated upon the advice of health professionals.

Do not make the jobs of first responders harder during this period of time. Remember, every health care worker, officer, paramedic and deputy have a family at home they are concerned about, too. We are in this together.

Be reasonable and responsible.

Follow the direction and requests of health officials. Remain vigilant, take precautions and use your best judgment. If at any time you need assistance, your first responders are a call away.

Restaurant provides lunches to kids during school shutdown

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media HENNEPIN — With children out of school in a statewide effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus, one of the restaurants making sure they get a lunch is Spratt’s Tap. The restaurant has received several “extremely generous donations”

to help support a free-lunch-for-kids program.

Thanks to donations from the community, Spratt’s is changing up its menu a bit, and “offering hot dogs and chips on Mondays and Fridays, sloppy joe’s and chips on Tuesdays and Thursdays and mac and cheese on Wednesdays,” said Jen Spratt, who owns the restau-

rant with her husband Rob. The kids also get an ice cream treat.

Donations have helped the business make deliveries countywide, she said, and orders can be placed via Facebook message or sprattstap@ gmail.com.

Spratt said the Putnam County schools are offering free breakfasts and lunches three days a week. But

hours are somewhat limited, and parents need to pick up the meal at the schools.

Spratt said she and her husband were planning to provide lunches before they heard details about the schools’ plan, and when the restaurant’s takeout business picked up and donations came in, they decided to deliver to students’ homes.

PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE Domestic battery On March 29, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department arrested Todd A. Fues, 55, of Hennepin on an original arrest warrant for domestic battery.

Fues was charged following an investigation from an incident that occurred on

March 26 at his residence in rural Hennepin. Fues is alleged to have committed an act of violence against a household member. Fues was not arrested that night because he fled the scene. Fues is currently being housed at the Putnam County Jail on a no-bond warrant.

Hospital staffs are briefed daily on coronavirus situation

BY DEREK BARICHELLO, TOM COLLINS AND GOLDIE RAPP Shaw Media Gov. J.B. Pritzker outlined worstcase scenarios March 24 for Illinois residents, specifically the ability of hospitals to handle increases of COVID-19 cases.

LaSalle County has had three confirmed cases of COVID-19 — and each individual is said to be recovering at home in isolation. Bureau, Grundy, Livingston and Marshall counties each have had a confirmed case of the virus, while Putnam County has not had a confirmed case.

Illinois has 2,600 ICU beds across the state, with 1,100 currently available, according to Pritzker. The state has 26,000 non-ICU hospital beds, with 13,000 currently available.

The coronavirus has not affected hospitals’ capacity in LaSalle, Bureau and Grundy counties as of March 24.

Worst-case scenarios indicate with no intervention, the state would need an additional 28,000 non-ICU beds and 9,400 ICU beds within the next two weeks.

“That’s untenable,” Pritzker said.

The state has 2,200 ventilators, with 1,600 currently available. Many COVID-19 patients who are hospitalized require intensive-care treatment with ventilators. Those worstcase scenarios indicate the state could need 4,100 more ventilators.

“What we’ve done already is … to make sure a worst-case scenario does not become our reality,” Pritzker said.

The state has intervened with its “stay-at-home” order, closing of schools, bars and restaurants, and various other measures.

OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center, an acute care facility in Ottawa, is the area’s largest hospital with 97 beds.

Morris Hospital has 89 beds. Illinois Valley Community Hospital in

Peru and St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley both have 49 beds, while OSF St. Paul Medical Center in Mendota and Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton each have 25.

Perry hospital officials noted the government is allowing critical access hospitals to provide more than 25 beds during the pandemic.

“We do have extra beds available that are normally used for pre-op and post-op in our endoscopy suite,” Perry hospital officials said.

At St. Margaret’s, six beds are designated for ICU, four at IVCH and three at Perry. OSF hospitals in Ottawa and Mendota “have capacity and continue to plan for an influx,” officials said.

Treatment for COVID-19 patients

St. Margaret’s and IVCH officials said the number of ICU patients varies each day, but as of last week they have four to six ICU beds filled for unrelated illnesses. Perry had an average of one ICU bed filled per day. Patients’ average length of stay is typically less than three days, officials said.

Hospital officials have what they call “surge plans,” should there be a sudden increase in patients.

“We have an emergency operations plan that contains a surge plan that will allow us to increase our general and/or ICU beds as needed, pending the availability of staff,” said Caitlin Parker, community relations coordinator for OSF St. Elizabeth.

“OSF HealthCare St. Elizabeth Medical Center has been running through those scenarios with our leaders, mission partners and medical staff. We presently have no shortage of providers.”

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.

EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Casting call postponed LASALLE — Previously announced auditions for Stage 212’s summer 2020 production, the Tony Award-winning Cole Porter musical “Kiss Me, Kate,” have been postponed, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, from April 3 and 4 until Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2, at Stage 212, 700 First St. in LaSalle.

Director Reid Tomasson will be casting 20 men and women in a variety of lead, supporting and ensemble roles. Those auditioning should come prepared to sing a musical theater selection 30 seconds to

one minute in length. Auditioners will also be taught a one-minute dance audition.

Those with tap experience will be taught an additional tap combination. Those seeking principal roles will be required to do readings from the script. No preparation is necessary and familiarity with the script is not required to audition. For more detailed information, visit stage212.org.

PCES students vote for their favorite Bluestem Book HENNEPIN — The fourth- and fifth grade students participating in the Bluestem Book Award Program sponsored by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators (AISLE) voted for their favorite book on March 6.

This is the 10th year for the Bluestem Award book program at Putnam County Elementary School in Hennepin. Students who read at least four of the 20 books on the list were eligible to vote for their favorite book. Students also had to discuss the book with Media Paraprofessional Lori Mertel and complete a worksheet on the book.

Thirty-two students were eligible to vote. Students and staff enjoyed cookies, juice and ice cream with toppings.

Fifteen of the 20 books received votes with two books in first place: “Ban This Book” by Alan Gratz and “Last Kids on Earth” by Max Brallier. The second-place winner was “Not So Different” by Shane Burcaw. All of the votes were submitted to the state AISLE website, and an overall favorite of all students in the state of Illinois will be announced at a later date.

So far, many books have been read. Students who read all 20 nominees will receive a medal. Students have until April 24 to read all the titles if they choose to do so.

Good Citizens honored by Chief Senachwine DAR chapter

HENRY — The Chief Senachwine Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution honored three area high school seniors as Good Citizens at a tea during their March 6 meeting held at the First Presbyterian Church in Henry.

Students so recognized were Griffin Self from Henry-Senachwine High School, Emily White from Midland High School and Ali Ciucci from Putnam County High School.

The Good Citizens program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all public or private high school seniors of an accredited school.

Selection is based on dependability (truthfulness, honesty, punctuality, etc.), service (cooperation, helpfulness, responsibility, etc.), leadership (personality, self-control, initiative, etc.) and patriotism (unselfish loyalty to American ideals). Students are selected by the school faculty and high school peers.
