MCNABB — Moreno’s on Main will present its first-ever give back event for veterans and first responders on May 29 and 30 in McNabb.

This two-day event will include a wide variety of entertainment and fun for all ages, including, but not limited to, music giveaways, local veteran tributes, parade, pancake breakfast, 50/50 drawings, bag tourney, food and much more.

One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the event and split evenly between the two charities.

They hope to hit a mark way above $10,000 to donate.

Both charities boast over 87% of donated funds go to the recipients.

With this event, a variety of different items will be needed: chair, tent and table rentals, advertising, T-shirts, prizes, raffle items, enter-

NRCS announces application cutoff for special conservation projects in Marshall, Putnam counties State Conservationist Ivan Dozier announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will offer funding in Marshall and Putnam counties for the Mississippi River Basin Big Bend Enhancing Water-Soil-Habitat Quality project through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP).

NRCS has partnered with the Marshall-Putnam Soil and Water Conservation District to help producers address resource concerns such as degraded water quality and soil erosion. Producers can apply for assistance through the Conser-

vation Stewardship Program (CSP) which allows producers to build on their existing conservation efforts while strengthening their operation through special conservation activities that are offered. The project focus is to improve water quality in Marshall and Putnam counties.

Financial assistance will be available to eligible producers whose land is located in Marshall and Putnam counties. While applications are accepted throughout the year, interested producers should submit a signed application (NRCSCPA-1200 form) to the local NRCS

field office, or through the Farmers. gov website using their account, by the cutoff date of May 7, to ensure their applications are considered for 2021 funding. A blank NRCSCPA-1200 application form may be obtained from the local office or on the Illinois NRCS website. Producers wishing to use Farmers.gov, can sign in or create an account by clicking on “Sign up” in the upper right of the website.

To see if you are eligible to participate in the program, producers should contact their local NRCS field office or visit the Illinois NRCS website at www.il.nrcs.usda.gov.

HENNEPIN — Hennepin’s riverfront has a new, open look.

Last week, demolition of the old Cargill Grain Elevator on South Front Street began Monday and continued throughout the week.

The old elevator has sat empty for years. Hennepin Village President Kevin Coleman said it’s been about four or five years since the elevator has been used. Most of the grain that was once stored in the elevator is now hauled to the Spring Valley location.

A high-reaching excavator was brought into the village last week to tear down the highest points of the structure.

Having the tall elevator gone changes the look of Hennepin’s riverfront. While Coleman said it’s sad to see it go as it’s been a part of Hennepin’s history for so long, he added it’s also nice to see it go having not been used and just sitting at the riverfront deteriorating.

Coleman is unsure exactly when the elevator was built. He said he moved to Hennepin in the late 60s and it was already there. Perhaps, the 40s or 50s, he said, but couldn’t be 100% sure.

Coleman said the village has plans to reach out to Cargill once demolition is complete to see what might be done with the land. He said he hopes it would be given to the village to extend Riverfront Park there on South Front Street.

OGLESBY — Cannabis firm NuEra recently donated $100,000 to Illinois Valley Community College’s cannabis production certificate program.

NuEra’s Principle Officer Keith McGinnis of Ottawa made the gift to IVCC President Jerry Corcoran, board chair Jane Goetz and vice chair Everett Solon at IVCC’s Ottawa Center Friday morning.

“This remarkably generous gift facilitated by Keith will aid significantly in our agriculture department’s build-out of this program,” Corcoran said, adding, “It will provide the resources it needs to flourish.”

NuEra, headquartered in Wheaton, operates a cultivation center in Hillcrest, with medical dispensaries in Chicago, East Peoria and Urbana. NuEra also services the adult use cannabis market in East Peoria, Pekin, Champaign, Urbana and two facilities in Chicago.

Hennepin Park District will sponsor activities over spring break HENNEPIN — The Park District will be sponsoring activities over spring break.

On Friday, April 2, they will have an Easter egg hunt on their lawn.

They will have plastic eggs that participants can collect. Each egg will have an Easter treat in them. Ages 0-3 will hunt their eggs on the front lawn at 10 a.m. Ages 4–first grade will hunt their eggs on the north lawn at 10:30 a.m. Grades 2-5 will hunt their eggs on the south lawn at 11 a.m. The Easter Bunny will be present. The Easter egg hunt will be free to all who participate.

On Monday, April 5, the movie “Croods: A New Age” will be shown on the big screen TV. Snacks and a beverage will be served. The movie starts at 11:30 a.m. and should conclude around 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, April 7, Gerrie’s Craft Corner will be in the community room. Participants will make a fun spring craft. Crafts start at noon and will conclude at 1 p.m. Participants should wear old clothes as they will be painting.

On Friday, April 2, and Friday, April 9, there will be free swim for Hennepin and Hennepin Township

residents during the open swims.

Cost of the other activities is free for Hennepin and Hennepin Township and $5 for all other areas. Only 10 participants will be taken for the movie day and the craft day. To be guaranteed a spot, pre-register by calling 815-925-7319 or by email to hennepinparkdistrict@mchsi.com.

Participants are invited to stay after each of the activities for open swim at no additional charge with the exception of the Easter egg hunt.

Children under 42 inches must be accompanied by an adult into the pool and children 11 or under may

stay for three hours if not accompanied by an adult. An adult is considered anyone 18 and over.

The park district will follow CDC guidelines. Children will be required to wear a mask while participating in the activities. They also ask that during the outdoor egg hunt that all in attendance wear a mask if they are unable to maintain 6 feet distance from other participants.

Nicholas Balestri elected to Board of Directors CHERRY — State Bank of Cherry and Cherry Bancorporation President and CEO Dan Wujek is pleased to announce the election of Attorney Nicholas Balestri to its board of directors. Balestri was born and raised in LaSalle and graduated from LaSalle-Peru Township High School in 2002. SARAH MANSUR Capitol News Illinois SPRINGFIELD — A bill to expand the use of vote-by-mail and curbside voting in future elections passed the Illinois Senate March 25, meaning it needs only a signature from the governor to become law.

House Bill 1871, which was approved by the House last week, would revise the state election code to make permanent some of the changes that were widely adopted across Illinois for the 2020 general election in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If the bill is sent to Gov. JB Pritzker and signed quickly enough, it would take effect immediately, possibly in time for the April 6 elections.

The changes include allowing election authorities to install drop box sites where voters can submit mail-in ballots without postage during and on Election Day. The bill also permits curbside voting where people can fill out ballots outside the polling place during early voting and on Election Day. The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Julie Morrison, D-Lake Forest, also would require election authorities to accept mail-in ballots with insuffi-

cient or no postage.

The bill states that ballots turned in after the close of business “shall be dated as delivered the next day, with the exception of ballots delivered on election day, which shall be dated as received on election day.”

Thomas Bride, executive director at Peoria County Election Commission, said this provision was carried out in his county by installing a locked cover on the drop box by 7 p.m. on election night.

“At that point, the drop box was locked and any [ballots] that were deposited before 7 p.m. were counted, and then it stopped the ability to leave [ballots] in the drop box after 7 p.m.,” Bride said during the Senate Executive Committee on March 24.

The bill passed out of that committee on partisan lines March 24 and advanced to the Senate floor for a vote, where it was approved on a bipartisan roll call with 48 votes in favor and seven against.

drop boxes for the February primary election and the upcoming April 6 consolidated election.

Matt Dietrich, spokesperson for the state Board of Elections, said the Election Code is silent on drop boxes, as it is currently written. He said drop boxes were specifically authorized in the election bill for the 2020 general election.

“When that law expired on Jan. 1, there was no specific prohibition on their use nor was there any authorization for their use,” Dietrich said in an email.

Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray said his office is treating the single drop box outside the county building as an extension of the election office.

The state’s election code allows voters to return their mail-in ballots to the election authority office, which is the county election office in Sangamon County.

“I can’t stress enough how universally popular and successful this resource was in the November general election,” Gray said in a phone interview.

Sangamon County voters from both parties “utilized it often, and resoundingly praised it as a service,” Gray said of the two drop boxes.

“We don’t want to confuse voters,” he said, by taking away a resource that was available to voters in November.

“There’s risks in anything but, you know, we believe this to be an accommodation of an extension of our office for people to return their ballots in this unique challenging environment of COVID-19, including for the consolidated [April] election,” Gray said.

Larry Suffredin, an election attorney and Cook County Board Commissioner, said he didn’t think any legal challenge would be brought over the ballots returned to the drop boxes on county clerk’s office premises because those ballots remain under the care and control of the clerk’s office. “[County clerks] control the lockbox, they control the access to the lockbox and the law says that your mail in ballot is to be returned to the clerk. So I don’t think that you have a legal issue with what’s going on right now,” Suffredin said.

Prosecutors: There was plenty of evidence to convict Deb Dewey’s killer

State urges appellate court to deny Andersen a new trial TOM COLLINS tcollins@shawmedia.com Clifford Andersen may not have confessed to killing sister-in-law Deb Dewey, whose body was recovered in a shallow grave in Standard, but prosecutors said in a new filing the evidence against him was overwhelming.

The Illinois Attorney General’s Office recently filed a brief urging an appeals court to deny Andersen a new trial. Though Andersen said his 2018 jury trial was riddled with errors and there was no proof he took a dime from Dewey, the AG’s office said that argument ignores a stack of incriminating discoveries.

Andersen, 71, is serving 60 years for first-degree murder. He was con-

victed in summer 2018 of killing Dewey and argues now his conviction should be thrown out and his case sent back to Putnam County.

A ruling is pending before the Third District Appellate Court. For now, Andersen and prosecutors are trading briefs as to why his conviction should or should not stand.

Prosecutors said there was much evidence of guilt. They cited numerous bank transactions showing the usually-frugal Dewey had begun withdrawing thousands each month starting in January 2015 but not using the money for herself.

“A branch manager asked whether she was remodeling, and Deborah said that she was ‘just helping someone out,’” the AG’s office wrote. “Over the course of 2015, she withdrew more than $100,000, and she continued withdrawing thousands of dollars a month until her last withdrawal on May 31, 2016, at which point only about $41,000 remained in the account.”

The money, prosecutors said, was used to fund Andersen’s gambling habit. At the time of Andersen’s arrest he had been spotted daily at video gaming parlors, running up at least one five-figure loan. “(Andersen) remained involved in Deborah’s affairs during this time period,” prosecutors wrote. “After her ex-husband died in 2015, (Andersen) called Deborah’s attorney to discuss difficulties that defendant and Deborah were having in obtaining payment of survivor benefits from the pension plan administrators.”

Dewey disappeared in August 2016 and witnesses spotted some suspicious activity by Andersen, such as driving Dewey’s car, hovering near where her body was recovered and using cleaning equipment at the suspected crime scene.

Prosecutors also dispute Andersen’s contention his speedy-trial rights were violated or eight individual errors amounted to cumu-

lative error that denied him a fair trial.

“In sum, (Andersen’s) cumulative-error claim fails because none of the alleged errors, even viewed cumulatively, created so pervasive a pattern of unfair prejudice as to undermine the integrity of the judicial system,” prosecutors wrote. “At most, defendant has shown a handful of ordinary evidentiary errors, all of them harmless.”

He was born in Spring Valley, IL, on September 26, 1958, to Tony and Irma Ellena. Mike worked side by side with his father on the family farm and at Ellena Construction. He graduated from Putnam County High School in 1976 and married Gayle (Jones) on February 4, 1978.

Mike quickly made a name for himself in the car business. He started selling cars at Big Billy Barrett’s in Dallas, and then became a self-employed automobile wholesaler. He worked out of the Image 1 building on Northwest Highway in Dallas for many years. Mike continued to buy and sell cars until his illness would no longer allow him to do so. He loved his profession.

Mike’s greatest passion was time

spent with his family. He also played many games of golf and shuffleboard throughout the years. Although he enjoyed the games, it was time spent with friends while playing the games that he enjoyed the most. If Mike was your friend, you had a true friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Irma Ellena; and his sister, Diana Ellena.

Mike leaves behind a family that adored him as much as he adored them. He is survived by his wife, Gayle; two daughters, Shawna and Andrea Ellena; his son-in-law, Stoney Adams; his grandson, Anthony Ellena; his granddaughter, Delaney Adams; his sisters, Helen (Fran) Aimone, Emma Haywood, Toni Sabotta, Kathy (Rich) VanBeuning, Mary (Jerry) Mooberry, Laurie (Dan) Kotecki and Shelly (Brad) Kays; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on April 9 at Eastgate Funeral Home in Garland, Texas. There will be plans for a celebration of life in Putnam County at a later date.

Mike has requested donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

LINDA L. (GILBERTSON) BRYANT Born: July 5, 1949; Sandwich Died: March 24, 2021; Granville GRANVILLE — Linda L. Bryant, 71, of Granville passed away on March 24, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Mueller Funeral Home, Peru.

Linda was born on July 5, 1949, in Sandwich to Ralph and Ione (Clemens) Gilbertson. She married Edward C. Bryant on February 7, 1970. Linda worked for the United States Postal Service until retirement in October of 2019. She liked to read and enjoyed gardening and sharing what she grew with family and friends. Her

greatest joy in life was raising her family and she will always be remembered for her generous heart.

Survivors include her four children, Jason (Tina) Bryant, Jennifer Smith, Jina (Fransico) Ramirez and Joshua (Amy Smick) Bryant; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Christine Gilbertson and Tina Bretz; three brothers, Ralph Gilbertson Jr., Everett Gilbertson and Dale Gilbertson; her sister-in-law, Marlene Stevenson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; and one sister, Sue Shipp.

POLICE REPORTS PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF Disorderly conduct Brian K. Ballard, 46, of Berlin, Wis. was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass to a motor vehicle following an incident at a residence in Standard at 5:47 a.m. March 24.

Illegal dumping Michael E. Lurz, 36, of Granville was charged with illegal dumping, driving on a suspended license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle in Granville Township at 12:12 p.m. on March 24. Lurz also had an outstanding warrant out of LaSalle County.

EDUCATION NOTES Tri-County Opportunities Council will award at least 12 scholarships At least 12 scholarships will be awarded by Tri-County Opportunities Council to income eligible students residing in the agency’s service area, which includes Bureau, Putnam, LaSalle and Marshall counties.

IVCC ag department will conduct research trials on its 150-acre campus farm OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s ag department will partner with University of Illinois Extension and CNH Industrial’s Innovation and Agronomy teams to conduct a variety of research trials and demonstrations on its 150-acre campus farm this spring.

Led by Extension agronomist Russ Higgins, three corn trials focusing on planting depth, corn root worm activity and tar spot susceptibility will be planted.

Corn and soybean seeding rates along with corn maturity demonstrations will be planted by students.

CNH will conduct in-field planter tests monitoring crop residue and nitrogen placement.

“We’re pleased our students will be working with the Extension and CNH on this research,” said Ag program co-coordinator Willard Mott. “Such hands-on learning can shape their future career paths.”

A fall field day is planned to share results with the public.

NOTICE TO HENNEPIN RESIDENTS

The Village of Hennepin passed a Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling Ordinance on October 21 , 2020 (Full Ordinance can be found on the Village website). Among other items, the Ordinance requires each residence to receive trash removal service. On January 1, 2021 the Village of Hennepin entered into a 3 year contract with Republic Service giving them sole rights to trash removal. The new contract also requires Republic Service to provide both a trash receptacle and a recycle receptacle. Republic Service distributed receptacles a few weeks ago, with informational literature attached. The only exemption will be if a Hennepin business owner currently has a dumpster at the location of their business and they reside in Hennepin and do not wish to receive trash removal at their residence.

The business owner may apply to the Village to opt out of trash removal at their residence. The Village Board apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.

Fajitas serves up something for everyone to enjoy It’s no surprise people love Mexican food for its rich use of spices and wide variety of ingredients.

Located at 254 Third St. in downtown LaSalle, Fajitas offers options from classic tacos, burritos, enchiladas and chimichangas to chile rellenos and carne asada.

Fajitas has daily lunch specials from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that will fill you up quickly for $8 over your lunch break. Dinner specials are offered frequently, and every Wednesday, Fajitas has $2 tacos in whatever style meat or tortilla you choose.

With a menu that gives customers choices besides traditional Mexican items – such as salads, seafood, sandwiches and even a kids menu for pickier young diners – Fajitas has something for everyone to enjoy.

I recommend starting off with an order of queso dip ($3.95 small, $5.95 large) served alongside homemade chips. Add chorizo to the dip ($1) if you’re in search of an extra kick.

As most could probably guess, Fajitas Mexican Restaurant has fajitas, and they are definitely worthy of namesake status.

The steak fajitas ($12.95) came paired with red and green peppers, onions and flour tortillas that combined to create an almost sweet-savory taste many are sure to enjoy. For an extra dollar, customers can get combination fajitas with steak, chicken or shrimp.

While the fajitas were a highlight for the Mystery Diner, there are many other quality items on the menu.

The plates featuring chimichangas ($9.95), enchiladas ($9.95), burritos ($9.95) and tostadas ($9.95) are all popular items offered a la carte without beans and rice.

Putnam County Library District announces April programs The Putnam County Library District has announced its April programs.

• Saturday, April 10 — Nature scavenger hunt at 10 a.m. Look and find pickup kit will be available.

• Tuesday, April 13 — The University of Illinois Extension office and 4-H will have a paddleboat make/take home kit available from 4 to 5 p.m.

• Tuesday, April 20 — Roll the Dice exercise game from 3 to 7 p.m. Take home bag available.

• Thursday, April 22 — Earth Day kids flower painting hour from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

• Saturday, April 24 — Lego Day at 10 a.m.

• Homework Helper — Students are welcome to work on homework at the library during library hours.

• April 4-10 — National Library Week. Come in to see what goodies are available and programs happening at the local library branches.

In honor of National Library Week, a Community Comforts Drive will be held for the month of April. It has been a tough go for communities during this pandemic. This year they will be collecting personal items for the Putnam County Food Pantry — shampoo/conditioner, body wash, laundry soap, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, toothbrush/toothpaste, tampons/pads, deodorant and personal care items. This is the same as the past Food for Fines drive, for every donation $1 will be taken off your library fines.

Only items sealed will be accepted.

• Virtual Library Escape Rooms — A new event begins every month. The event will be on Google Forms; the link will be on the website under “All Library Programs.”

Hennepin • Thursday, April 1 — Movie matinee all day.

Participants can pick up a movie and a bag of goodies to go. Fill out the report and turn it in for a prizes at the library.

• Thursday, April 8 — Claire Evans will present “From Uptown Girls to Downton Abbey: How American Gilded-Age Heiresses Invaded the British Aristocracy” at 6:30 p.m. live on Zoom (a link will be on the website and Facebook). Long before the British Invasion, the cash-strapped lords, viscounts and dukes of Great Britain shifted their focus from hunting foxes and pheasants to more lucrative targets: cash-flush Gilded Age American socialites who were willing to trade their family’s money for an ancient title and often a chilly reception in the British aristocracy. Join Evans, anglophile and former U.K. resident, as she recounts the tales of some of the famously loaded young Americans who infused bank accounts of many stately homes, including close relatives of Winston Churchill and Princess Diana. She’ll also give travel tips if you’d like to create a Gilded Age tour for yourself.

• Thursday, April 15 — Bad art craft will be spring wreath. This grab-and-go craft art program will be available all day for all audiences. Rotten eggs are not included.

• Thursday, April 22 — Earth Day take-and-go project available all day. Participants can pick up supplies to make their own seed bombs.

• Tuesday, April 27 — Spring Wildflowers and their Native American and Pioneer Uses at 6:30 p.m. live on Zoom (link will be on website and Facebook). Program will also be available on Facebook afterward. Lisa Sonsthe, natural resource coordinator with Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks, will be discussing how the Native Americans and Pioneers used spring wildflowers.

• Story time — Story time has been suspended until further notice. Patrons are encouraged to watch story hour online via the library’s Facebook Page. If a story hour online craft kit is wanted, call the Hennepin library at 815-925-7020 to be placed on a list for kit pickup.

Magnolia • Thursday, April 1 — The 1940′s: Swing Dancing, World War II and The Greatest Generation at 6 p.m. on Zoom (link will be available on website and Facebook).

The 1940s was a time of war. Though the Great Depression had subsided, terror was in the lives of many due to the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler, the Holocaust, World War II and the Red Scare.

Meanwhile, new inventions were developing such as the microwave oven, the Jeep and the most explosive invention, the Atomic Bomb. Swing music, the Jitterbug, Zoot Suits and the Lindy Hop were all in vogue. A drastic cut in the manufacturing of consumer goods, fabrics and automobiles due to the war effort made rationing mandatory. Alfred Hitchcock beyond a Shadow of a Doubt made a Notorious name for himself through movies of suspense and psychological thrillers. Soon-to-be-famous authors also released books such as “Pippi Longstocking,” “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “The Stranger” and “Death of a Salesman.” Historian Jim Gibbons will discuss the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor and our dealings with Russia leading to the Cold War. Gibbons will also talk about Harry Truman’s presidency, his defeat of front runner Thomas E. Dewey and the signing of the Marshall Plan. He will explain how in 1943, new controversial music was established eventually ending the Swing Era and setting up a whole new decade of Rock and Roll.

• Wednesday, April 28 — 1893 Chicago World’s Fair at 6:30 p.m. in-person and via Zoom (Zoom link will be posted on website and Facebook). The year is 1893 and the city of Chicago is booming.

Chicago is told it will be the city chosen among several others to officially hold the World’s Columbian Exposition, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival.

The fair will mark a turning point in Chicago’s history, bringing diverse cultures to the area as well as architecture, the arts, sanitation and more. It will also help bring an industrial boom to the city, bringing those from all over the world to what would become a key melting pot city in America. Historian Jim Gibbons will discuss the turn of events that took place at the World’s Columbian Exposition, later to be called the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Gibbons will explain how Thomas Edison brought his new inventions to the fair. He will discuss how author L. Frank Baum wrote the book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” based on the magic and beauty he saw in Edison’s inventions and other influences at the fair. While the fair brought to light many new inventions, cultures and literary works, it also cast darkness among the city as America’s first well-known serial killer, Dr. Henry Howard Holmes (also known as H.H. Holmes), who confessed to murdering between 27-200 people in his hotel. The book, “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America,” would later be written by author Erik Larson based the H.H. Holmes murders. On a lighter note, the inventions and magic can still be found in Chicago’s last-standing building of 1893, The Museum of Science and Industry, where families, adults and children can learn and explore technology, history and culture of the past and present.
