HENNEPIN — The votes in Putnam County’s eight precincts have been cast, and the results of the March 20 General Primary Election have been tallied.

Voter turnout was low. Only 17.4 percent of Democrats, or 746 voters, made the decision to cast ballots.

Republican turnout was lower, with only 10.2 percent of voters, or 435 people, casting ballots.

Of Putnam County’s 4,279 registered voters, only 1,181, not quite 28 percent, chose to cast a ballot, meaning 3,098 voters chose not to participate in the electoral process.

“The election process went very well,” Dan Kuhn, Putnam County clerk, said.

“We implemented new voting equipment for this election, and the ‘maiden voyage’ was free from any major problems,” Kuhn said.

“Our election judges did an outstanding job. As was the case for many other counties, our voter turnout numbers were low and we ended up ‘unofficially’ at 27.66 percent. Since I’ve been in office, this is the lowest turnout other that 25 percent for the 2006 General Primary Election,” Kuhn said.

The Democratic ballot J.B. Pritzker won the local race for Democratic candidate for governor with 51.5 percent of the votes. Chris Kennedy received 30.39 percent; Daniel Biss won 15.41 percent; Bob Daiber had 0.86 percent; Tio Hardiman received 0.43 percent; and Robert Marshall had 1.43 percent. Statewide, Pritzker won the election with 45.2 percent of the vote.

The local Democratic race for the attorney general nomination was easily won by former Gov. Pat Quinn who received 42.03 percent of votes. Renato Mariotti had 5.46 percent; Scott Drury had 16.54 percent; Nancy Rotering was chosen by 6.83 percent; Kwame Raoul got 18.21 percent; Jesse Ruiz had 2.58 percent; Sharon Fairley had 5.46 percent and Aaron Goldstein got 2.88 percent.

HENNEPIN VILLAGE BOARD

Derelict properties and delinquent cats

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — The village has tried requests, notices, fines and high-priced charges for services such as mowing the grass, but the owners of some Hennepin properties remain unfazed and continue to fail in the upkeep needed to maintain their properties.

During the March 21 Hennepin Village Board meeting, board members discussed this with village attorney Sheryl Kuzma. Kuzma has been researching the criminal nuisance ordinances of other communities as part of a plan to remedy Hennepin’s problem with blighted and vacant properties, including some that are in the process of foreclosure.

While the banks eventually taking over those properties will sell them if able, Kuzma said there is precedent they could be willing to abate them and let the village acquire ownership.

However, board member Quentin Buffington raised concerns, saying the village could end up spending more money to acquire and demolish the structures than what the remaining lots would be worth.

“We need to have a plan in place for what we’re going to if something like this were to happen,” Buffington said.

“We don’t just want to spend thousands of dollars and then have to sell the lot at a loss of several thousand

more,” he said.

Kuzma said, “You probably will lose money in the short-term. But, having vacant houses that continue to deteriorate in the community is generally seen as a cancer that spreads, and it’s in the interest of the village to either get those into the hands of someone who will take care of it or knock them down, sell the lot and have a new house back on the tax roll.”

Buffington then said the village has ordinances in place that allow a property owner to be fined daily for property violations.

Village President Kevin Coleman said if the banks were able to sell the properties in question to new owners who would be willing to either bring the properties up to standard or demolish them and build a new home, it would be great, but if not, then the village would still eventually have to deal with the problem.

“We’ve tried fining them for various things and charging them $100 to mow their grass, but the owners aren’t bothered. We could continue fining them and dragging it through court and get nothing, but it would take years and we’d still have the same problem. Something like this could provide an easier way out,” he said.

Kuzma is continuing to research the village’s options in dealing with blighted properties.

Cats and dogs Resident Mary Malavolti was well

prepared with an abundance of legal and informative research when she spoke to the board about finding a domestic cat near Third Street that was trapped in an illegal, body-gripping Kevin device designed to kill Coleman fur-bearing animals.

Fortunately the cat hadn’t been in the trap long and was released unharmed.

Malavolti said: “It’s unlawful to trap within 100 yards of a dwelling without first obtaining the permission of the owners or tenants. After speaking to the nearby residents, not one knew about it. Something like this has no place in our community, and I’d like the person responsible for placing this trap to be found because once they get away with it, they’ll continue to do it.”

Later, in a mostly unrelated discussion, Buffington reported the number of cats running loose in the village had become a nuisance.

“I’d like to remind residents their cats are not allowed to run loose,” he said.

As the weather has warmed, more people are venturing outside for enjoyable walks with their dogs. The board reminded residents they’re required to pick up after their pets during these walks.

• Buffington reported to the board he’d been visited at his home by an unidentified and unregistered solicitor asking for information about his Ameren account. When pressed to provide identification, the solicitor quickly left, and Buffington reported the incident to the sheriff’s office.

• Spratt’s Tap owner Jennifer Spratt spoke to the board about the difficulty she’s had with the local trash company in maintaining their pickup schedules, saying that it had recently been three weeks since her dumpster had been emptied.

• A legislative aide from state Sen. Sue Rezin’s office attended the meeting to hear ways in which her office could assist the village.

• Joni Hunt of the Illinois Valley Area Chamber reported on the various successes the organization has had in promoting the Illinois Valley’s business environment.

• The board discussed the purchase and design of new street signs along High Street.

• Village engineer Bill Shafer reported some residents have begun to work on the areas of their lawns that were disturbed during the work on High Street.

“The contractor is responsible for restoring, seeding and mulching these areas as needed and will be doing so when the weather gets warmer, but I want those residents to know if they do so on their own, they won’t be reimbursed,” Shafer said.

Helping students transition to a bright future High school work program evolves into a bonafide success

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The challenge of transitioning from school life to working life faces every student, but those with special needs can face additional hurdles.

So that those students don’t have to face those obstacles alone, the Putnam County School District has reached out into the community and found it very welcoming.

During the March 19 board of education meeting, Wendy Louis, special education teacher, and Missy Carlson, an aide and job coach, informed the community that the district’s Practical Assessment Exploration System (PAES) and the Independent Transition Program (ITP) were continuing to evolve and are increasingly successful.

“The students have been able to

explore more than 260 different job tasks within the program and have had an opportunity to explore their interests and abilities and find out what they like and don’t like,” Louis said.

“Some students have also been surprised to learn of talents they didn’t know they had,” she said.

The PAES and the ITP were started during the 2015-16 school year. Through PAES, ITP, and the dedicated work of Louis and Carlson, students have been assessed for appropriate transitions, skills, behaviors and interests. The students have the opportunity to step outside the classroom and gain realworld employment experience in a variety of settings.

Along with the initial classroom work, the students have also worked within the district’s schools by helping other teachers, the media center, the office, laundry and cafeteria.

After additional work with the job coach, junior and senior students have now had the opportunity to work outside the school.

“The PAES program has connected with community businesses and places students in real-life

working scenarios. The ultimate goal is to find employment for students to earn income and promote an independent lifestyle as the students get older. It’s been a very productive Carl Carlson start so far, and we look Putnam County to hopefully grow it School more,” Superintendent superintendent Carl Carlson previously said of the programs.

“The programs have evolved and are now addressing transitions into paying jobs within the community, and we’d like to thank the businesses who’ve supported the students and the programs. Our partners have willingly made accommodations, if needed, to help them successfully complete their tasks,” Louis said.

The district’s volunteer community partners included Putnam County EMS, PCES, PCPS, PCJH, PCHS, Hennepin Foods, the PC courthouse, Valley Flowers in Spring Valley, Lily Pads, IVCIL, the LaSalle and McNabb vets, and the PC Food Pantry.

include Hy-Vee, Denny’s, Kaddywampus, Subway, The Igloo, Delaney’s and The Clover Club.

Mike Olson, principal at Putnam County Junior High School, also spoke highly of the new mentor program at the junior high. When high school students in program visit the junior high, a younger special needs student is assigned to shadow them and learn what tasks are performed.

“That way, when these younger students transition into the PAES and ITP at the high school, there’s a friendly face there they recognize and they already know what’s going to be expected of them,” Olson said.

The success of these programs has also brought inquiries from other school districts, such as Streator and Grundy County.

In other board news

• The state owes the district $226,655.93, including more than $140,000 for transportation, more than $61,000 for early childhood education, and more than $21,000 for special education.

• PCES Principal Courtney Balestri reported the annual PARCC testing is going well.

PRINCETON — Freedom House has announced the appointment of two new members of its board of directors.

Joining the board are Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle and Sheila Rumbold.

“Both of our newest board members embody the spirit of community and bring talent, expertise and energy to the table,” Michael Zerneck, executive director, said.

“We are very fortunate to have them join us as we continue to provide confidential, free services to victims of domestic and sexual violence,” Zerneck said.

Doyle has been the sheriff of Putnam County for 20 years. He is a member of the Putnam County ETSB (Emergency Telephone System Board), serving as chairman for 17 years, and the Illinois Sheriffs Association for 10 years, where he serves as the chairman and training commissioner.

With his more than 25 years of law-enforcement experience, Doyle brings an insight to law enforcement’s perspective to the board.

Rumbold lives in Wyoming and

represents Stark County on the board. She owns and operates a boutique and other small businesses, is an active volunteer/member of the Chamber of Commerce for 17 years, and PEO for eight years. She has also volunteered as an EMT for the Wyoming Ambulance Service.

Her experience and business knowledge are valuable assets for the board, as well as her dedication to the agency’s mission.

The Freedom House mission is to provide compassionate, confidential, free services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault as well as awareness and prevention education to the community.

ISP, American Legion officials offer summer youth police camp Applications are due by noon on May 29 SPRINGFIELD — Officials with the Illinois State Police (ISP) and the American Legion will conduct the 46th annual American Legion Youth Police Camp (ALYPC) at Camp Lincoln, 1301 N. MacArthur Blvd. in Springfield, on June 24-29.

Dozens of teens from across Illinois will discover career opportunities through training with police and military personnel. The primary purpose of the ALYPC is to establish an interactive and positive relationship between Illinois teens and law enforcement officers.

The week-long residency camp is structured to promote educational and learning opportunities for youth ages 14-16 in the areas of law enforcement, military, leadership, cultural diversity, personal development, physical fitness, and social and interpersonal skills.

American Legion volunteers and ISP troopers are assigned to manage the program and serve as instructors and mentors. Many of the American Legion and ISP volunteers are former graduates of

the program.

“The American Legion Youth Police Camp provides an excellent opportunity for the Illinois State Police and the U.S. Armed Forces to have positive interaction with our youth,” said Illinois State Police Director Leo P. Schmitz.

“Most kids begin the week-long program intimidated and nervous, only to graduate more confident.

The kids develop a sense of esprit de corps and camaraderie as they learn to work as a team and motivate other cadets throughout the challenging week.”

The ALYPC Cadets will be honored and receive a graduation certificate at a graduation ceremony on June 29.

The American Legion will accept applications until noon on May 29. Teenagers 14-16 are encouraged to apply for and attend the 2018 ALYPC for an enriching experience.

While Intersect Illinois is focused on marketing Illinois as one of the most innovative locations in the world for new investment and jobs, NCI has the clear focus of marketing Bureau, LaSalle and Putnam counties as a profit center for new investment and jobs.

NCI and Intersect Illinois were both formed just 2 years ago in 2016.

This aggressive partnership focus on marketing may be new to Illinois, and to North Central Illinois region, but it is working.

is already achieving results. For two years in a row, Illinois has ranked No. 3 in the nation for new corporate business locations and expansions.

Through its marketing efforts, Intersect has helped to encourage 12 companies to locate in Illinois with an investment of $249 million and the creation of 1,057 new jobs. Peterson said Intersect is currently working on 49 projects, including being a finalist for the Amazon HQ2 project.

“People can say we have challenges, but the reality is that Illinois is the largest economy in the Midwest, and a business powerhouse,” Peterson said. “We are competing, the facts are clear, and we are not afraid to fight for new business investment.”

Shaw Media OTTAWA – Shaw Media has agreed to acquire the The Times of Ottawa and its assets from Small Newspaper Group, company leaders announced Wednesday.

The Times will be the latest addition to Sterling-based Shaw’s portfolio of publications, which includes more than 150 titles in northern Illinois and Iowa. Shaw President and CEO John Rung said it was a great fit for the company.

“When we consider an acquisition, it has to make perfect sense, both financially and strategically. The Ottawa Times checks both boxes,” Rung said. “The addition of The Times to our portfolio of local newspapers makes Shaw Media a

stronger company.”

The sale is expected to close the first week of April. Terms were not disclosed.

Shaw Media is the parent company to the Putnam County Record.

Small Newspapers President Len R. Small said his company sought a smaller and more manageable footprint in the Midwest. Kankakee-based Small owns two other daily newspapers and several magazines and digital services in Illinois and Minnesota.

“This marks the end of an 80-year journey with the newspaper that has been a source of pride,” Small said. “We did our best to serve our communities, and the awards we received speak for themselves.

with a wonderful group of people. We wish them well with the new owners, who have a reputation for ethics and quality journalism that is well deserved.”

Here’s your chance to reshape Illinois politics Y

ou and I have an opportunity, right now, to help reshape Illinois politics. The issue is redistricting of state legislative and congressional districts in Illinois.

First, some background.

Our 50 states are responsible, respectively, for redistricting.

In 1812, Massachusetts governor Elbridge Gerry approved boundaries for a state senate district that outlined a salamander. Voters in the tortuous, non-compact district did elect a solon favorable to Gerry’s party.

Thus, “gerrymander,” a term that lives in political infamy.

Drawing districts has always been about benefiting those who draw the maps.

Starting with the U.S. Supreme Court case of Baker v. Carr (1962) and many since, states have been required to draw districts that are equal in population, and in one piece. The result has been that the majority party in a legislature has drawn districts that meet those criteria, but otherwise are often contorted, incomprehensible.

Even small counties and cities are split into multiple districts in the quest to create as many safe, secure districts as possible for the party in charge. The result of concentrating the majority party’s voters into safe districts is that minority party voters are necessarily also pushed

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan together in fewer, but also safe from challenge, districts.

In safe districts, most elected lawmakers have little fear of challenge at November general elections, so often feel little need to be responsive to the concerns of voters of the other party.

Ironically, and this is a little difficult to follow, lawmakers in safe districts do tend to worry about challenges from within their own party in primary elections, generally from the Far Right for Republican lawmakers, and the Far Left for Dems.

The Left and Right of each party do not, respectively, constitute a majority of all voters, yet they often represent a majority of the smaller number of primary voters in their own party.

A simpler way of saying this: The present process allows politicos to select their voters (by drawing lines to include voters desired and exclude those not), rather than allowing voters to select their lawmakers at elections.

But here come the guys (and gals) in white hats, riding to the rescue.

In the House, state Rep. Ryan

Spain (R-Peoria) has introduced a proposal to amend the Illinois Constitution. Spain would take redistricting away from self-interested lawmakers and give it to a bipartisan commission of non-elected Dems, GOPers and Independents appointed by state Supreme Court justices.

In the other chamber, state Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) and Heather Steans (D-Chicago) have introduced the same proposal. (By the way, both Spain and Morrison are former students of mine: Ryan at the University of Illinois and Julie at Knox College.)

Democratic Speaker of the House Mike Madigan will fight these proposals tooth and nail. Above all else, Madigan craves political control. If a Democrat is elected governor in November, that party would control the redistricting process after the 2020 Census.

If you concur with me on the need for this redistricting reform (and not everyone does), I ask you to consider the following simple steps: 1) Identify your senator and house members.

2) By email, ask the lawmakers if they will support the constitutional amendment proposal to reform redistricting (HJRCA 43).

3) Ask your lawmakers if they will also vote to discharge the House and Senate proposals from those cham-

T will come. I have little green shoots peeping out on the south side of the house where the north wind can’t get to them. Usually by now, we think IT won’t come at all, and the cold will go on and on. It will be all right. IT will show up, and we’ll forget how impatient we were.

Many of us are so disturbed by these school shootings and feel helpless in many ways. But I have hope (as usual) that the children themselves will make the necessary changes. They will vote soon, you know. As I write this, the kids all over the country are walking out of schools to make a statement to their elders to please protect them.

Old age is a good time to reflect on things and let go of things you can’t change. It is burdensome for us at this age to worry about ongoing his-

CONSIDERATIONS BY NEDDA Nedda Simon tory and foolish people doing foolish things when we know from our own life, they won’t work. Others will spend millions of dollars to make a statement of some kind and in a few years, someone will come along and discover that doesn’t work at all.

Like walls.

As elders, we can sip some coffee, smile and nod to our dear friends, and know we are thinking the same thing. Whoops, there they go again.

Serenity goes a long way, and the prayer states to have courage about

things you can change. Trouble with that theory is, that means looking at ourselves and changing! As my granddaughter says, “Whaaat!”

Let’s face it, even if we are aging, we can vigorously look at ourselves and tweak a few things. Do we think negatively all the time, criticize often, and drink too much, still smoke, talk incessantly, or not at all?

There are people out there who can help us change. Just ask someone to help you be the best, kindest, healthiest, happiest person you can be. No, it doesn’t take a lot of money.

Effort? Honesty? Yes. We all know someone who seems to be happy and makes others happy.

If you talk to them awhile, they offer a generous spirit, with no hidden agendas, no axes to grind, and a hopeful and grateful outlook. This

person has a spiritual base. Visit with them and get to know them if you can. I try to learn from them, and Lord knows, I need all the help I can get.

Maybe we as elders are too busy entertaining ourselves with what modern life offers, that we forget to help change things in our community. “Courage to change the things we can.” Volunteering doesn’t take much effort, and even making calls can make a difference. It is astounding what a little effort can change.

Look at our children this day all over the country -- walking.

Be kind to each other, and love to you all.

DAR salutes nine with Good Citizen awards Putnam County student among those honored

BY GOLDIE RAPP news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — The Princeton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored area students during a recent luncheon at Hampshire Colony Congregational Church.

Nine students were winners of the DAR Good Citizen Award: Alexander Peck of Bureau Valley High School, Berenice Campos of DePue High School, Westley Schmidt of Hall High School, Alexa Loftus of Ohio High School, Caleb Sarff of LaMoille High School, Michaela Crowe of Princeton High School, Anna Mattern of Putnam County High School, Joseph Peacock of St. Bede Academy, and Olivia Koll of Henry-Senachwine High School.

DAR Good Citizens are selected at

their individual schools by faculty and peers based upon leadership, service, dependability and patriotism.

Sarff’s essay for the DAR Good Citizens has advanced to District II judging.

Ryan Frank of Princeton High School was winner of the Christopher Columbus essay. Students were asked to write about why a country would fund the trip of an explorer from a different country. Columbus, an Italian, was an explorer whose funding was provided by Spain. The essay was written by students in ninth through 12th grade.

Graeham Rumley of Princeton Christian Academy was winner of the American History essay. Students were to imagine living in 1918 and determine how the end of the Great War would impact life at that time. The essay was written by students in fifth through eighth grades.

Additionally, the Princeton Chapter awarded a DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal to a student for the first time. The award was given to Peacock. The medal is awarded to

BRIEF Hunter safety course announced PUTNAM — Area residents will have an opportunity to learn basic principles of safe hunting at a Department of Natural Resources hunter safety course on Saturday, April 7, and Sunday, April 8, at the Putnam County Conservation District, Senachwine Unit, 5769 Lake Road, Putnam. The class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

A 1996 state law requires that all hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1980, successfully complete the hunter education course before they can receive

their first hunting license. Participants completed the course receive a Hunter Education Certification card verifying that they have passed the course of instruction. Participants should provide their Social Security Number at the time of the class.

The minimum 10-hour course includes instruction in wildlife management, firearms safety, hunter ethnics, game identification, first aid, survival techniques and regulations.

Seneca 4, PC 1 Seneca limited Putnam County (1-4) to one run in a 4-1 loss on March 22. Paige Veronda knocked in Morgan Hundley in the sixth inning for the Lady Panthers’ lone score of the game. Hundley and Alivia Resurreccion had two singles each.

Olivia Holmes, who had the other hit in the contest, was the losing pitcher in the game, going three innings, allowing four hits and two runs on two walks and one strikeout. Resurreccion pitched two innings, walking two, striking out one and allowing one hit and one run. Haley Cioni pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits and walking one.

Luke Olson and Luke Carlson both had singles. Caleb Dzierzynski took the loss, going three innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. He struck out four and walked one. Luke Olson pitched 1.1 innings and Caleb Tonozzi threw for 1.2 innings.

Brimfield 6, PC 5 Caleb Dzierzynski was charged with the loss when he allowed two earned runs in two innings of relief on March 21. He struck out two and walked one. Starter Dan Sabotta pitched five innings, walking five and striking out five. Cam Colby was 3-4 at the plate.

Brayden Holmes was 2-4 at the plate. Nolan Whitney, and Max Huffstodt also had hits.

Streator 11, PC 1 Streator defeated Putnam County 11-1 on March 22. Jacob Williams pitched 5.1 innings, allowing 14 hits and 11 runs. He struck out two and walked two.

PC 4, Somonauk 4 Putnam County tallied one run in the sixth inning to tie the game that was called by the umpires due to darkness on March 20. The Panthers rapped out eight hits in the game led by Luke Olson, Caleb Tonozzi and Max Huffstodt with two singles each.

The Panthers scored single runs in the second, fourth, five and sixth innings while Somonauk scored all of its runs in the fourth. Starter Carlson pitched five innings, striking out seven and walking two. Jacob Williams pitched two innings, striking out four.

• Master Gardeners from the University of Illinois Marshall-Putnam office will present “Pollinators” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in Granville.

They will talk about the different types of pollinators that in the garden.

• An Author Night with James Janko and Marydale Stewart will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in Granville. Janko will discuss his new book, “The Clubhouse Thief,” which won AWP award for his baseball novel. Stewart will share poetry from her book “Risk.”

• A Library Science event will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in McNabb, where participants will explore scientific experiments and

create a craft that fits the subject matter. This month they will be doing underwater biospheres.

• A paint party will be at 3 p.m.

Luminarias are now available HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam Relay for Life may not be until April 20, but now is the time to purchase luminarias.

This year, along with the white luminaria bags, there will be special gold luminaria bags.

Inaugural youth bike workshop set PRINCETON — University of Illinois Extension, in partnership with the Princeton Pedestrian and Bicycle Commission, will offer a free youth bicycle workshop during Bike Safety Month.

Youth ages 6-18 are invited to attend this fun, informative workshop on Wednesday, May 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Perry Memorial Hospital employee parking lot, corner of Park Avenue and Fifth Street in Princeton.

Those in attendance will be led through multiple stations to learn about safety, maintenance and more from Princeton Bicycle Patrol Officers, Bicycle Commission members and bicycle enthusiasts. A meal will be provided at the conclusion of the workshop.

to area youth to attend this new event,” said Danielle Saletzki, University of Illinois Extension 4-H & Youth Program coordinator. “Participants will be able to acquire knowledge and skills that can be utilized as a family recreational activity.”

People should make known the importance of promoting safety, respect, and equality to stop sexual violence before it happens.

MCNABB — On March 8, 24 students from Putnam County Junior High School participated in the Northlawn Junior High Math Competition in Streator.

Fourteen schools throughout the area brought teams of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders to compete in individual and team competitions. In the individual competition, students worked on 30 questions with a time limit of 35 minutes, and in the team competition, students worked together in groups of five to tackle 30 new questions in 30 minutes.

Before the competitions started, students were also challenged to take their best guesses at several tables full of estimation problems, such as how many goldfish are in this container, how many people have been born in Illinois since the start of the year, and how many estimates will this question receive by the end of the competition.

At the end of the competition, the awards ceremony honored the top five students in each grade level for the individual competition and the top five teams from each grade level for the team competition, as well as the students who had the closest guesses for the estimation problems.

During the ceremony, Putnam County Junior High School had several students recognized for their performances during the competition.

River Valley Players launches 41st season with ‘Godspell’ HENRY — The perennial favorite, “Godspell,” is being given a facelift this spring by River Valley Players through the vision of director Mark Nowakowski and the interpretation of music director Mary Cornwall.

The musical depiction of the teachings of Jesus is supported by several well-known and beloved songs such as “Beautiful City,” “Day by Day” and “All Good Gifts.”

The talented cast and musicians will present a bold new production that is sure to capture and engage the audience. In this unique production of “Godspell,” the band is actually featured right on the stage and consists of some of the finest musicians surrounding the River Valley Area.

“Godspell” creates the opportunity for the audience to open their hearts, become vulnerable to the message and truly listen. Nowakowski’s mission is for each individual to imagine the experience of meeting the Son of God as a truly humble and delicate experience. The parables coupled with both a tantalizing depth and a beautiful meaning cause human connection to this message to be nearly unavoidable.

He paves the way for this amazing cast in the role of Jesus as he teaches the Bible’s message through fun, creative play.

COMMUNITY BRIEF Next series of IVCH prenatal classes start April 4 PERU — The next series of childbirth classes at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru will get underway at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in the meeting room inside hospital’s office building at 1305 Sixth St. in Peru, just east of the emergency department entrance. Additional sessions are set for the next three Wednesdays, April 11, 18 and 25. Taught by IVCH obstetrics unit nurses, the first two classes focus on labor and delivery. The week three class is about breastfeeding and the week four class covers newborn care, including infant CPR and car seat safety. Sgt. Jason Brokaw memorialized with scholarship OGLESBY — The family of former Peru Police Sgt. Jason Brokaw recently created a criminal justice scholarship in his memory.

Sgt. Brokaw’s widow, Deborah, daughter Hayleigh and son Calvin donated $15,000 to the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation to create the Jason A. Brokaw Memorial Scholarship for students pursuing criminal justice careers. Also contributing to the endowment are his parents George and Barbara Robinson of Granville.

The $500 scholarship will be given annually beginning in September.

Sgt. Brokaw died Aug. 8 following a courageous battle with transverse myelitis, an inflammation of the spinal cord. The illness, which caused paralysis, forced his retirement in 2016.

Hired by Peru in 2008, officer Brokaw had worked previously at the Spring Valley Police Department, Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and Granville Police Department. He also worked for the village of Ladd and DePue.

“All through his career, Jason performed his duties admirably,” Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei said at the time of Brokaw’s death at age 43. “His common sense approach and genuine respect for others served him, his community and all of us very well.”

Deb Brokaw said, “Jason was extremely passionate about being a policeman down to his uniform and the reports he filed.

This scholarship will provide a way for someone to carry on that passion in law enforcement — a profession Jason loved.”

Brokaw was a graduate of Putnam County High School, Illinois Valley Community College and Illinois State University. While at IVCC, he worked in the bookstore and in later life remained an advocate for the college in the community and at home with Hayleigh and Calvin.

It was Hayleigh and Calvin’s idea to start the scholarship, said their mother.

“Our father always said IVCC was a great place to start,” said Hayleigh, a sophomore at Hall High School.

Park district will sponsor children’s activities during spring break HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District will sponsor children’s activities over spring break.

On Friday, March 30, there will be an Easter egg hunt on the lawn. They will have plastic eggs that participants can collect. Each egg will have an Easter treat in them. Ages 0-3 will hunt their eggs on the front lawn at 10 a.m. Ages 4 through first grade will hunt eggs on our north lawn at 10:30 a.m. and grades 2-5 will hunt eggs on our south lawn at 11 a.m. The Easter Bunny will be present to take pictures with.

On Monday, April 2, the movie “Coco” will be shown on the big screen TV. Popcorn and a beverage will be served. The movie starts at 11:30 a.m.

On Tuesday, April 3, Gerrie’s Craft Corner will

be in the community room. Participants will make some fun spring crafts. Crafts start at noon and will be done at 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, April 4, “Ferdinand” will be shown on the big screen TV. Popcorn and a beverage will be served. The movie starts at 11:30 a.m.

On Thursday, April 5, there will be kid’s bingo in the community room. Participants will play bingo for prizes. Bingo starts at noon and will conclude at 1 p.m.

The cost of any of these activities is free for Hennepin and Hennepin Township and $5 for all other areas. Participants are invited to stay after each the activities for open swim at no additional charge with the exception of the Easter egg hunt.

Children under 42 inches must be accompanied by an adult into the pool and children 11 or under may stay for 3 hours if not accompanied by an adult. An adult is considered anyone 18 and over.

BY JIM DUNN Shaw Media PRINCETON – The future of agriculture was an overriding theme at the Princeton Chamber of Commerce’s fourth annual Salute to Agriculture Appreciation Breakfast.

High school students representing Bureau County’s three FFA chapters at Princeton, Bureau Valley and LaMoille spoke about their ag activities to about 300 people who attended the early morning gathering at The Barn at Hornbaker Gardens on March 16.

Two FFA students, Clay Sundberg of LaMoille High School and James Bickett of Princeton High School, were presented ag scholarships to assist them in their future studies.

And the keynote speaker, Jeff Rowe, a Princeton High School alum who is president of Global Seeds and North America Syngenta, a leading Swiss-based agriculture technolo-

Five macro trends will impact agriculture, Rowe said: • More output;

• Convergence of technologies; • Advanced farming practices; • Structural shifts; and • Sociopolitical and regulatory changes.

Plus, changing demographics and

how agriculture is conducted in other parts of the world are important for U.S. farmers to be aware of.

“We need to do a better job of understanding the rest of the Jeff world,” Rowe said.

Rowe The digital disruption that has impacted retail, taxi and hotel businesses worldwide – Alibaba, Uber and Airbnb have risen to be the largest companies in their fields – has not impacted agriculture yet, Rowe said. He referred to the “ag lag,” or delay in how revolutionary trends that start elsewhere take longer to impact agriculture.

But just as biotechnology changed agriculture, Rowe said, digital disruption will impact it, too.

During his presentation, Rowe flashed several quotes on the overhead screen.

Rowe said he studied ag at Iowa State University and started working as a grain merchandiser before he decided to enhance his education by studying to become a lawyer.

This additional knowledge prepared him to work in the evolving field of biotechnology for ag companies such as Pioneer (where he worked 23 years and rose to be European regional director based in Switzerland) and Syngenta (for the past 18 months).

Rowe said he lives in Minneapolis with his wife, Amy, and their four children, and he works in the United States, Latin America and China.

They’re getting ready today for farming’s future FFA schools students through technology and communication

BY DAVE COOK Shaw Media GRANVILLE — Future Farmers of America, better known as the National FFA, was founded in 1928.

In the decades since, many changes have taken place to keep its members at the leading edge of agriculture.

Many adaptations revolve around the great strides made through technology and science, and it’s apparent when looking at the curriculum .

“The FFA and agriculture education have been at Putnam County High School for more than 40 years, and it’s changed a lot just in the classes offered, including agriculture communications and biotechnology,” said John Heiser, Putnam County ag science teacher.

“The curriculum continues to evolve as agriculture becomes more

Putnam County High School FFA students are as likely to learn in a classroom as they are in the field, and the rapid growth of technology crosses over both environments. and more technology and advocacy focused,” Heiser said.

Additionally, each year students can participate in the FFA’s Career Development Events and Supervised Agriculture Experiences.

Heiser said these educational events let students work with industry insiders and apply what’s been

learned in the classroom to realworld scenarios, saying it gives them responsibility and also helps build their resumes.

“Students also get to explore different career opportunities by doing CDEs and SAEs,” he said.

“They have the opportunity to travel throughout the state, country

and to other countries, too. It also prepares them for college and the workforce.”

Communication is another big way in which technology has changed the FFA. “Keeping everyone updated with pictures and posts is how we stay in contact, and I see technology becoming a bigger part in our chapter because students are becoming more acquainted with different programs and are wanting to keep up to date with what’s ‘in,’” Heiser said.

Nolan Whitner, a junior at Putnam County High, commented: “FFA helped me become a better leader, an overall well-rounded person and helped me realize some of the aspects behind the business of farming. It’s also helped me develop good time management and communication skills.”

After working in the FFA biotechnology class, sophomore Cassie Johnson was asked about what role she thought GMOs will play in farming’s future.

“I think GMOs will create more nutritious and faster-growing products to help support our growing population,” Johnson said. “Farmers will be able to grow more crops on one piece of land than they would with non-GM seeds. This will help them make money, so they don’t have to pay more for land.”

She added scientists have been able to create crops with additional nutrition, such as golden rice. However, she said, there isn’t enough research to support any real drawbacks and that the research done so far is inconclusive and biased.

“Therefore, the only drawbacks are that consumers are very misinformed about what GMOs are and how they’re developed,” Johnson said.

Putnam County FFA students have also designed solar water heaters in their ag engineering class.

“It’s a good idea to incorporate renewable energy because it’s great to find different ways to produce energy without wasting fossil fuels,” sophomore Carter Trone said. “We’ll soon run out of fossil fuels, so the more we incorporate it now, the better.”

CROP PRODUCTION FORECAST

Potential lower acreage, higher consumption seen as favorable signs U of I Extension URBANA — A strengthening trend in corn consumption, smaller corn acreage, and the developing production issues in South America signify a positive outlook for corn in 2018.

The expectations for corn in the 2018 crop year put forth in this analysis show lower production leading to decreased ending stocks in 201819.

According to University of Illinois agricultural economist Todd Hubbs, “The big ending stocks projected for this marketing-year continue to hang over corn prices and an upward price movement in corn during 2018 appears likely under a reduced production scenario.”

Corn consumption currently is showing signs of building strength in exports, ethanol production, and other domestic uses. As 2018 pro-

gresses, an expectation of continued growth in corn consumption is the baseline for this analysis.

“Expectations for the 2018-19 marketing-year for consumption exceed projected production, which leads to a lower level of ending stocks by the end of the marketing year. Corn exports will be influenced by trade policy, world corn production, and economic growth,” Hubbs said.

While changes in trade policy may impact corn exports over the next year, the following analysis assumes a minimal impact due to trade disruptions.

“Corn export projections by the USDA for the current marketing-year sit at 2.05 billion bushels.

Current production issues in South America and the competitiveness of U.S. corn export prices increase the probability of exceeding the current USDA marketing-year projection,” Hubbs said.

It won’t be too long before planting season, with area farmers checking their fields soon after for how well corn plants have emerged. The potential for 400 million fewer bushels is increasingly probable in the two major South American countries.

With a revision in South American production, world production projections come in approximately 4.5 percent lower in 2018. Building

on the strength expected in export markets for the remainder of this marketing-year, 2018-19 corn export projections in this analysis sits at 2.025 billion bushels.

Corn used for ethanol production during this marketing-year continues to show tremendous consumption potential.

“Through February 28, an estimate of corn use for ethanol sits slightly above 2.8 billion bushels. An expectation of small increases in gasoline consumption in 2018 and 2019 combined with growth in the ethanol trade balance provide support to the continued increase in corn used for ethanol,” Hubbs said.

Corn used for ethanol expectations increase to 5.57 billion bushels in the 2018-19 marketing-year.

The potential for lower cor n acreage in 2018 combined with an increased consumption scenario presents a positive outlook for corn prices in 2018. While the corn price will continue to struggle with ending stocks, an upward price movement in corn during 2018 appears likely.

narrowed since last August as new capacity came online and continues to increase production. More competition among packers for hogs is helping strengthen bids for hogs and increasing the farmers’ share.”

Finally, exports remain strong with 22 percent of U.S. production being exported in 2017. USDA is expecting exports to be 4 percent higher again this year.

“The market has caught on to a strong demand, with live prices so far this year averaging about $1.80 per hundredweight higher than the same period last year. In addition, the lean hog futures market has been strong as well,” Hurt said.

Using those futures prices and historic basis, expected live hog prices for 2018 would average about $53.50 compared to $50.48 last year.

“The prospect of hog prices this year being $3 per live hundredweight higher is a reflection that the futures market recognizes the strong demand outlook for this year. Time will tell if the current optimism can turn into reality,” he said.

U of I Extension URBANA — The pork market has been favored by strong demand, and that remains supportive for hog prices this year. Prospects remain positive for higher producer prices again in 2018, even in the face of a 3 percent to 4 percent increase in supply.

However, according to Purdue University agricultural economist Chris Hurt, a new threat to profit margins is being driven by dry weather in Argentina, therefore pushing up feed costs.

On the demand front, all signals continue to be positive. So far in 2018, pork supplies have been up by 2.5 percent, yet hog prices have also been higher by nearly 4 percent. There are several signs of positive demand growth.

“First, January retail pork prices were 18 cents per retail pound higher this year compared to January of 2017. This indicates that consumers are willing to pay more for pork even though there is more pork available,” Hurt said.

“Second, packer margins have

“Those expected prices are about $51 per live hundredweight for the first quarter, around $57 for the second and third quarters, and then near $48 for the final quarter.”

Hurt continued: “Higher hog prices are a joyful sound to hog producers, but there are two catches. The first uncertainty is whether hog prices can actually be as strong as current markets expect, and the second uncertainty is feed cost.”

The pork industry, like all animal agriculture, has believed that feed supplies are abundant and that corn and soybean meal will remain cheap.

Why? For the four crop years from 2014 to 2017, farm-level corn prices received have averaged $3.49 per bushel, and in the past three calendar years from 2015 to 2017, high-pro soybean meal at Decatur has averaged $328 per ton.

Since the beginning of this year, hog price prospects have increased, but so have anticipated feed costs.

For hog producers, the increase in soybean meal prices has had a bigger impact on feed costs than increases

in corn prices.

So far this year, hog price prospects are higher, but so are anticipated costs. The net effect is to reduce profit prospects modestly. Profits above all costs in 2017 were estimated at about $5 per head.

Hurt concluded that pork demand should remain positive through the year with strong U.S. and world economic growth. Longer-term, however, higher wage rates, higher inflation, and higher interest rates may begin to constrain economic growth.

“Global demand for feed ingredients continues to grow, but favorable weather has resulted in near record global yields for the last four years. A shift to less favorable global weather has obvious consequences for animal industries,” Hurt said.

“As a reminder, the pork industry should strive to keep breeding herd expansion to around one percent per year. Keeping breeding herd growth to about one percent per year will increase production by about 2.5 percent per year, which seems to be a sustainable growth rate,” Hurt said.

U.S. Department of Agriculture CHAMPAIGN — Agricultural producers wanting to enhance current conservation efforts are encouraged to renew their Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) contract by the upcoming deadlines.

Through CSP, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) helps private landowners build their business while implementing conservation practices that help ensure the sustainability of their entire operation.

Participants with existing CSP contracts expiring on Dec. 31, 2018, can access the benefits of the recent program changes through an option to renew their contracts for an additional five years, if they

CSP also encourages the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and new management techniques such as precision agriculture applications, on-site carbon storage and planting for high carbon sequestration rate, and new soil amendments to improve water quality.

Some CSP benefits include: • Improved water quality;

• Improved cattle gains per acre; • Increased crop yields; • Decreased inputs; • Improved wildlife habitat and populations; and • Better resilience to weather extremes.

NRCS recently made several updates to the program to help producers better evaluate their conservation options and the benefits to their operations and natural resources.

New methods and software for evaluating applications help producers see up front why they are or are not meeting stewardship thresholds, and allow them to pick practices and enhancements that work for their conservation objectives.

These tools also enable producers to see potential payment scenarios for conservation early in the application process.
