Contested races emerge on ballot Putnam County School Board, McNabb village elections among highlights

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — There are several contested races on the April 2 Consolidated Election ballot in Putnam County.

Four seats on the Putnam County School Board are up for election.

Membership on the board is restricted to a maximum of three members from any congressional township.

Running for an unexpired twoyear term in Township 32N, Range 2W are Michael Borri and Mark J. Judd.

The area of residence of those elected to fill unexpired terms is taken into consideration in determining the winners of the full terms.

Competing for the three seats on the school board with full four-year terms will be Adriane L. Shore and Gretchen Holloway Currie from Township 32N, Range 1W; Emily Chiado from Township 33N, Range 1W; and James A. Gibson from Township 32N, Range 2W.

Uncontested races on April 2 ballot Many village, park district, library district, and other positions up for election in the April 2 Consolidated Election are uncontested.

Among them are the following: Granville village trustee: Three candidates for three seats.

Hennepin village trustee: Three candidates for three seats.

Hennepin village trustee (unexpired term): One candidate for one seat.

Magnolia village trustee: Two candidates for three seats.

Early voting will continue through April 1 HENNEPIN — Putnam County Clerk Dan Kuhn announced that early voting for the April 2 Consolidated Election will be conducted in the county clerk’s office in the courthouse at 120 N. Fourth St., Hennepin.

Early voting will continue through Monday, April 1, on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and also on Saturday, March 30, from 9 a.m. until noon.

“Any voter that is a valid registrant in Putnam County may vote during the early voting period after showing proper identification,” Kuhn said.

“However, any vote cast is final and may not be revoked. As a result, the early voter is not eligible to cast a vote on Election Day,” Kuhn said.

The Village of McNabb has six candidates vying for three four-year terms on its village board. The candidates as they appear on the ballot are Richard F. Haar, Maria Krowlek, Stacey McNaughton, Travis Keesee, Diane Cimei and James Wegrzyn.

McNabb also has one seat with a two-year term on the ballot. Patricia Strickler and Frank McNaughton are running for that seat.

Village preparing to put cameras in parks

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Since last year’s project to improve McCoy Street was so far under the estimated budget, even with significant additions, the Granville Village Board approved using the remaining funds to help repair other streets.

T h e b o a rd a n t i c i p at e d t h e long-awaited McCoy Street project to cost approximately $559,000 and had also factored in an additional 10 percent in contingency costs. The winning bid, however, came it at a surprisingly low $368,000.

The board took advantage of the low bid by approving project extensions that included a variety of curb, sidewalk and retaining wall work along McCoy Street at a cost of roughly $137,000.

Approximately $87,000 of the McCoy Street bond balance is left

and will be transferred to the village’s Road Repair Reserve Fund to help improve other streets.

“We want to thank you for helping us do this right,” Village Jared Baker President Jared Baker Granville told engineer Mike village Richetta at the March president 19 Granville Village Board meeting.

The village has also chosen Elm Street for major improvements, and board member Jim Pettit said he was looking into whether grant funds are available. The project will include a widening of the narrow area near Casey’s General Store.

Water treatment and waste water treatment plants The board approved Richetta’s proposal to prepare a preventive maintenance plan for the village water treatment and waste water treatment plants. He estimated there would be approximately $5,000

in fees and said he’d likely have the first report ready in May. He also said he thought the recently completed improvements at the water treatment plant were “a major improvement” that will help the equipment last longer and be more efficient.

Richetta also presented the board with information about the installation of either one or two fans at the waste water treatment plant to help dry the polymer sludge. To install two overhead fans was estimated to cost $16,300 plus installation. After viewing the results of the computer-generated air flow analysis, the board decided that one fan actually provided better air flow than two.

Public Works Superintendent Sheli Starkey reported there has been an ongoing electrical problem in the control panel of one of the village’s well pumps. She said the village is still pumping water, but that the panel is being tested to locate the problem.

Starkey also reported that as soon as the temperatures allow, her department will begin filling potholes.

Park surveillance The board discussed the installation of security cameras in both Hopkins and Veterans parks. Baker said it will cost the village about $4,000 for five cameras and a DVR upgrade. The cameras will feed into the village hall and will be capable of rotating 360 degrees.

Baker said it is hoped the addition of cameras will prevent vandalism at the parks and that they will also provide additional security to the bus stop near Veterans Park.

In other board news • Granville Police Chief Kevin Moore reported the village’s siren system has been repaired.

• Pettit told the board he would soon begin working on the preparations for the next village budget.

Kids raise $27,000 for St. Jude over five years Board salutes continued success of math-a-thon and 21 Day Kindness Challenge

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Although Putnam County Junior High has only about 200 students, the charitable impact of their fundraising efforts is significant.

At the March 18 Putnam County School Board meeting, junior high math teacher Kris Sienza reported the 46 students who recently participated in the school’s math-a-thon event raised about $6,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

A math-a-thon requires students to acquire financial pledges for each math problem they can successfully complete in a given time.

“We’ve raised more than $27,000 in five years. I like the math-a-thon because it gets kids to use math and is for a good cause, which helps sick children. St. Jude’s provides all of their care at no cost to the families of these children, and if not for that, this could be a huge burden. This is why St. Jude’s is my favorite charity,” Sienza said.

Junior high Principal Mike Olson said he was told by math-a-thon program officials that Putnam County Junior High School, despite its small size, is in the Top 100 of schools in the nation in regard to the amount they’ve raised for St. Jude’s.

“This is a testament to how special

our community is with their continued generosity,” Olson said.

Sienza also leads the school’s Kindness Club. Members have participated in a 21 Day Kindness Challenge, and Sienza said his students combined for a total of 489 acts of kindness.

Sienza said 120 students participated in at least one activity, and two completed them all.

Another part of the club’s activities is the creation of awards that are presented at the end of the year to each teacher and staff member at the school.

Conferences and summer school Carlson told the board the district is planning to drop the spring parent/teacher conferences. He said because of the online availability of information to parents that they’re well aware of their children’s aca-

demic performance.

He also said individual conferences could be held as needed and that the elimination of the spring conferences will save a lot of time for both parents and educators.

The K-8 summer school program will not be held this year.

“When we analyzed all of the costs involved and compared it to the overall results, we decided those funds would be better used if they were infused into programs which would benefit all of our students,” Carlson said.

The board approved the tentative 2019-20 school calendar, and registration for the next academic year is scheduled for Aug. 1.

Finances Carlson reported the state currently owes the district more than $339,000 in mandated funding, includ-

ing more than $174,000 for early childhood education and more than $131,000 for transportation expenses.

Other items • The board accepted the retirement letter of science teacher John Slingsby, who will be retiring at the end of the 2022-23 school year.

• The board accepted resignations from Michelle Johnson, high school math teacher; Hailee Weisbrock, high school P.E. teacher; Jared Sale, eighth-grade girls’ basketball coach; and Brandy Baele, a school social worker.

• The board approved the rehiring of all probationary teachers, non-probationary teachers, principals and all non-union personnel. They also extended Carlson’s contract one year to a three-year contract.

• The next school board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 15.

“This is a trend that’s sweeping Illinois and the nation. It’s another way to provide individual attention to those who deserve it, and we have a lot of talented and bright students,” he said.

He also requested input about the possibility of additional students, other than the valedictorian and salutatorian, giving speeches during graduation ceremonies.

While Latin honors didn’t appear to have any opposition from the board, some members questioned allowing additional student speakers.

“The valedictorian and salutatorian speeches are the only recognition those students get,” board member Owen Mallery said.

He added that each student has the same opportunities at the beginning of high school and that the hard work

required of valedictorians and salutatorians is worthy of the special recognition they receive at graduation.

While no one proposed eliminating those speeches, TheCarl isinger said it could Carlson be valuable for some Putnam students who may not County School be college bound, but superintendent who were otherwise academically successful, to be able to share their thoughts during graduation.

MATILDA ‘TILLIE’ FERRONI CEDAR POINT — Matilda M. (Cerri) “Tillie” Ferroni, 97, of Cedar Point passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019, at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru.

She was born Jan. 7, 1922, in LaSalle to Joseph and Angelina (Pinotti) Cerri. She married Elvio Ferroni on June 21, 1945.

She graduated from L-P-O Junior College and was an elementary school teacher for more than 35 years, teaching in Cedar Point and LaSalle. She was a former member of Sacred Heart Church in Granville and the Key Club in Granville.

She is survived by nine nieces and nephews, Margerete Strack, Ann Cerri, Robert (Rita) Cerri, Tom (Betty) Cerri, Judy (Dave) Duvall, Sue (George) Don-

She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 22, 2001; and four brothers and two sisters.

Wednesday, March 20, at the Prey-Mueller Funeral Home in Oglesby with the Rev. Gregory Jarzombek, O.S.B., officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Granville. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.

SPARLAND — Maudie Ellen Crew, 88, of Sparland died Monday, March 18, 2019, at her daughter’s home in Magnolia, with her loving family present.

Born May 21, 1930, in Larkinsburg, in Clay County, to the late John W. and Bertha Ramsey King, she married Glenn Crew on Aug. 31, 1946, in Varna. He passed away in August of 2002.

Maudie was an assembler of automotive parts at Hobbs Manufacturing in Spring Valley for more than 30 years.

She is survived by her loving companion, Walter Baughman of Sparland; her children, Linda Morrissey of East Peoria, Glenn A. (Charlotte) Crew of Magnolia, Robert (Patrice) of Granville,

Cheryl (David) Smith of Magnolia, Debbie (Jerome) Price of Morgan City, La., and Pam (Ed) French, formerly Griffin, of Magnolia; 25 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Dannie Crew; a stepson, Jerry Lee Lowery; two brothers; three sisters; two grandsons, Dan Crew and Chad Griffin; and a great-granddaughter, Zaily Price.

Visitation and services were held March 23 at the Lenz Memorial Home in Lacon. Burial was in the Magnolia Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Heartland Healthcare Activity Fund.

VIRGINIA GANSEMER

JOHN GEHM JR. brother, Robert (Jackie) Naumann of Decatur, Ala.; and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Naumann of Tonica.

Virginia had a quiet, strong faith in God. She was a devoted wife and mother. Throughout her life, she gave graciously and selflessly and volunteered her gifts and talents to serve in her church and community. She enjoyed quilting and worked crossword puzzles daily. She had a green thumb, especially growing gorgeous geraniums.

She was also an avid reader.

Virginia graduated from Brown’s Business School in Peoria. She worked as a bookkeeper for Sears and Mendota Lutheran Home. She was also a town guide with Rainbow Travel and TriState Tours in Galena. She and Richard enjoyed many years in their winter home in Mesa. She will be missed in her Mesa East Community and by the ladies in her quilting club. She was a faithful and active member of her church, Victory Lutheran in Mesa, and St. John’s Lutheran when home in the summer months.

GRANVILLE — John “Bud” Gehm Jr. of rural Granville passed away Friday, March 22, 2019, at Manor Court in Peru, just two weeks shy of his 100th birthday.

John was born April 7, 1919, on the family farm in Granville to John and Thekla (Dippel) Gehm. He was married to LaVina Pletsch from Aug. 14, 1940, until her death on Dec. 16, 1987.

He married Norma Leverich, who survives him, on June 22, 1988.

John was a lifelong farmer on the Gehm family farm, north of Granville.

He was also an avid Cubs fan, and a member of Immanuel Lutheran (County Line) Church, where he served on the church’s council. He was also a lifetime member of Putnam County Historical Society.

Survivors include three children, LaVerne (Barbara) Gehm of Huntsville, Ala. Gerald (Dolores) Gehm of Granville and Roberta Henson of Peru; four grandchildren, Matthew (Vickie) Gehm of Mendota, Michael (Wendy) Gehm of Hillsborough, N.C., Andrew (Jenna) Gehm of Granville and Shannon (John Woods)

Henson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; seven great-grandchildren, Jonathon, Payton, Amelia, Thomas, Vivian and Emma Gehm, and Theodore Woods; four stepchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Cyril and Ariel; his sisters, Marceta and Margaret; and two nieces and one nephew.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at Immanuel Lutheran Church (County Line). Pastor Karen Karczewski will officiate the service. Burial will be in the Granville Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the church.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Putnam County Community Center.

MENDOTA — Virginia A. Bauer Gansemer, 85, of Mendota and Mesa, Ariz., passed away on March 18, 2019, at the Good Shepherd Assisted Living LLC Home in Mesa with close family by her side.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 29, at 11:30 a.m. in the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service.

Virginia was born on Jan. 4, 1934, in Putnam County to Chauncey and Elsie (Johnson) Naumann. She married Norman Bauer on Dec. 31, 1953. He died in April 1985. She later married Richard Gansemer on Oct. 17, 1987. He survives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, her brother, Gary Naumann, and a stepdaughter, Tracy Gansemer.

Also surviving are a son, Timothy (Maureen) Bauer, of Indiana; a daughter, Jeanine (John) Bakker, of Chicago; and Richard’s children, Dee Gansemer of Suwannee, Ga., Bev (Paul) O’Halloran of Hyde Park, N.Y., David (Kathleen) Gansemer, of Dubuque, Iowa, and Doug Fink, of Union Grove, Wis.; along with 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy (Don) Brandstatter of Chillicothe and Alice (Paul) Johnson of Medford, Wis.; one

Team Hennepin will hold annual breakfast on April 7 HENNEPIN — Team Hennepin Relay for Life will hold its annual pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday, April 7, at Cindy’s Country Stop Restaurant in Hennepin. Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Berry of Hennepin celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Chuck Berry and the former Donna Gayle Lloyd were married March 14, 1959, at the Raccoon Presbyterian Church in Aliquippa, Pa. They are the parents of two daughters, Darla (Steve) Harvey of Hennepin and Diana (Rick) Bean of Mark.

They also have five grandchildren, Ryan (Kayla) Harvey, Megan (Jordan) Kindred, Ashley Bean, Evan

Bean and Connor Bean; and three great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Adeline Harvey, and Ryker Kindred.

Chuck was employed at LTV Steel, formerly J&L Steel, in Aliquippa, Pa., and Hennepin as a quality control supervisor. Donna was employed by Heritage Enterprises in Peru as a bookkeeper. They are members of the Hennepin United Methodist Church, and enjoy playing dominoes with their friends, and spending time with their family.

WIIN gathering set for April 3-5 LASALLE — Mighty Word Church will host the 2019 Women’s International Impact Network (WIIN) gathering Wednesday, April 3, through Friday, April 5.

Putnam County Library District announces upcoming April activities The Putnam County Public Library District has announced its activities for April.

All libraries • Friday, April 12 — The libraries will close at noon for the rest of the day for a staff meeting.

• Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20 — The libraries will be closed for Good Friday and Holy Saturday. They will reopen on Monday, April 22.

Hennepin

• Thursday, April 4 — Mark Walczynski will host a program on “Great Lakes and the Illinois Country and their Dependence on Fishing” at 6:30 p.m.

Native Americans were not only accomplished hunters and gatherers, some were expert fishermen. Based on primary source documentation, this program examines Native American settlement patterns in the Great Lakes region and the fishing techniques used by the tribes.

It also recounts and explores several significant clashes that occurred because of fish and fishing rights.

• Wednesday, April 17 — A movie matinee, featuring “Incredibles II,” will be at 2 p.m. Movies are shown the third Wednesday of each month.

• Thursday, April 25 — A Crafty Thursday event will be at 6 p.m. Line art or line drawing is any image that consists of distinct straight or curved lines placed against a background to represent two-dimensional or three-dimensional objects.

Neill will return to Princeton for March 28 BCGS meeting PRINCETON — Michael John Neill, a professional genealogical speaker, will return to Princeton for the Thursday, March 28, meeting of the Bureau County Genealogical Society.

Because of his popularity with Princeton audiences, BCGS always is excited about his appearances. This year, he will present a program titled “How DNA Helped With My Irish Roots.”

In addition to his genealogical interests, Neill is a college math instructor. He has been deeply involved with genealogy for more than 30 years and guides research trips to

Salt Lake City, Utah, and Ft. Wayne, Ind., annually. He speaks at conferences all over the United States and has a research blog.

MAGNOLIA — This winter, Ciera Keller, 22, of Magnolia spent two weeks in Thailand helping animals and learning hands-on what it’s like to be a veterinarian.

Traveling with study-abroad organization Loop Abroad, Keller was selected as part of a small team that volunteered giving care at a dog shelter and spent a week working directly with rescued elephants at an elephant sanctuary.

The veterinary service program brings students to Thailand for two weeks to volunteer alongside veterinarians from the U.S. and Thailand. For one week, Keller and her team volunteered at an elephant sanctuary outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand, to work with the giant animals and learn about animal rescue and conservation on a larger scale.

The elephants at the sanctuary have been rescued from trekking, logging or forced breeding programs. Many of them had been abused and suffer from chronic injuries or blindness. At the elephant sanctuary, they are cared for by volunteers from all over the world. Keller helped to feed and care for elephants, as well as learn about their diagnoses alongside an elephant vet. The sanctuary is also home to more than 1,000 animals, including cats, dogs, water buffalo, horses and cows, and is sustained in huge part by the work of weekly volunteers like Keller.

For the other week, Keller volunteered at a dog rescue clinic in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The shelter is home to dogs who have been rescued after being abandoned, beaten or abused.

While she studied under the veterinarians lead-

ing her group, Keller and her team made a difference in the lives of these dogs. By providing check-ups and cleanings, diagnosing and treating ear and eye problems, taking and testing blood, administering vaccines, cleaning and treating wounds and helping with sterilization surgeries, the students were able to help support the health and well-being of these dogs.

By following a study abroad model instead of a voluntourism model, Loop focuses on educating its students so that they can contribute and serve in meaningful ways. It also works with locally run animal welfare organizations so that students contribute to long-term improvement on the ground in the countries they visit. With programs in Thailand, South Africa, Australia, and the Amazon and Galapagos, Loop Abroad is able to support animal welfare and conservation around the world because of its students and their dedication to helping animals in need.

The program’s managing director, Jane Stine, said: “Our students are some of the most amazing people I have ever met. They are kind, compassionate, dedicated, hard-working individuals who have big goals and want to make a big impact. It’s amazing to see how eager they are to learn and challenge themselves. Over the last nine years, we’ve seen them go on to do some wonderful things.”

Loop Abroad has animal science, marine biology and veterinary programs for students and young adults age 14 to 30, and offers financial aid and fundraising help. Programs range from two weeks in summer to a full semester abroad, and

Of her trip, Keller said: “This was an amazing experience. I learned veterinary procedures on casts and dogs. I also volunteered with elephants and was able to be up close and personal with them. It was amazing being submerged in the culture and learning all about Thailand.”

Keller is a senior at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville, majoring in animal science.

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS news@putnamcountyrecord.com Mother Nature is beginning to cooperate to allow the Putnam County baseball and softball teams to get outside and play ball. Here’s a preview of the PC spring squads.

PC baseball Last year: (22-9-1, 9-3 Tri-County).

Coach: Chris Newsome (fifth year).

2019 outlook: Taking a positive spin on being stuck inside for the start of spring practice due to the weather, PC coach Chris Newsome said the Panthers have been able to get a lot of offensive reps with some new drills and ideas implemented by new assistant coach Xavier Warren.

Newsome looks for contributions throughout the lineup, anticipating juniors Jakob Pyszka and Brayden Holmes and seniors Luke Olson, Nolan Whitney and Caleb Tonozzi to lead the charge at the dish.

Getting the first crack at pitching will be seniors Luke Carlson and Dan Sabotta and juniors Jacob Williams and Olson.

Rounding out the squad are seniors Chance Mayers (P/OF/IF), Ethan Staley (1B) and Caleb Wilson (P/OF) and juniors Jacob Wiesbrock (P/ OF/IF), Ben Cyr (P), Max Magana (P/C/IF) and Caleb Haig (P/OF).

Newsome was looking forward to when Mother Nature will allow them to play.

“We haven’t had very many opportunities to get outside on the field to even practice due to the weather, so I am excited to see how our guys translate what is being taught indoors out to the diamond,” he said. “It has been hard to practice certain facets of the game that require more space than a gym can provide — outfield drills, relay throws, etc.”

• Update: The Panthers defeated Somonauk 9-1 in their season opener at home March 19. Carlson got the start and pitched four innings for the win with three innings of relief by Sabotta. Sabotta also had two hits and two RBIs. PC fell 4-3 on the road at Brimfield March 20.

Mayers had a double and an RBI.

Coach: Angie (Augspols) Heiser (first year).

2019 outlook: Former coach Chris Walker left his mark on the Putnam County softball program, winning 190 games over 12 years (2007-18) with five regional and two sectional championships, retiring at the end of last season.

Walker turns the reins over to a former player, Angie (Augspols) Heiser, who was in the sixthgrade when Walker moved into the district, coaching both at the high school and junior

high level. That connection will help make for a smooth transition for the PC program.

“I never expected I’d be the one to do so, especially since I’ve only known PC softball to be under his leadership. But, it has been a rewarding and humbling experience so far,” said Heiser, who coached one year at LaMoille and JV at PC the past five.

“I am looking to use this season to prove myself as a knowledgeable coach, and to allow myself the freedom to be my best for this program in this role. I expect the same thing from my players. I am challenging all my players this year to become the best versions of themselves, to refine their skills and their talents, and to get out there and play their game and pave their own way.”

Along with the coach, the Lady Panthers have lost some big names to graduation (Resurreccion, Holmes, Veronda). Heiser said many of her upperclassmen this year have played in those previous players’ shadows for years, and “now it’s their time to shine and to show the world what type of player they are.”

Numbers are down for PC, and it will field just one team (no JV). Filling out the scorecard are seniors Haley Cioni, Skylar Grevengoed, Miranda Nutter and Megan Wiesbrock, juniors Morgan Hundley and Savannah Tucker, sophomore Caitlin Cioni, and freshmen Grace Ebel, Linzee Fay, Emily Friedrich, Zofie Uzella and Eden Walk.

The Putnam County Panthers boys baseball team collected three wins last week and lost once.

The Panthers broke out the bats for eight hits in a 9-1 win over visiting Somonauk. Dan Sabotta had two hits and two RBI to lead the team. He also pitched three innings in relief of winning pitcher Luke Carlson, who went four without giving up a hit.

PC also defeated visiting Pontiac, 6-2, with Nolan Whitney and Caleb Tonozzi getting three hits apiece and Jacob Williams pitching six innings and striking out six for the win.

The Panthers traveled to Brimfield and lost to the hosts, 4-3. Chance Mayers and Jacob Williams had run-scoring hits. Pitcher Kyle Gorisek took the loss.

PC finished the week with a 7-6 win over Fieldcrest. Dan Sabotta had two RBIs and Jacob Williams two hits. Luke Olson pitched five innings for the victory with seven strikeouts.
