On Mondays, Magnolia Methodist Church will provide lunches, Laurie Smith said.

The restaurant is providing curbside takeout food, and can provide lunches (choice of hot dog, grilled cheese or peanut butter and jelly with chips) outside of the restaurant

or delivered in a five-mile radius.

Why are they doing it?

“Because we’re a remote area, the kids are home from school and a lot of the parents are still working,” Laurie Smith said.

The cafe also is offering curbside to-go meals, and offers deliveries of those within the five-mile radius as well. Call 815-869-3600 or 815-257-7051 (cell).

PRINCETON — In response to Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s shelter-in-place order issued March 20 and taking effect at 5 p.m. March 21, Hector Gomez, administrator of the Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Department, said he was not surprised by the order, based on the way the number of COVID-19 cases has increased within days.

“I think sheltering in place to allow people to stay home, and hopefully they do stay home, will slow the spread of the virus in Illinois and in our area,” he said.

Gomez added if everyone follows the order and only leaves their homes for the essential things like groceries, medications and gas, there is potential the spread of the virus will slow.

Since the outbreak, Gomez has also encouraged people to continue checking in on the elderly to make sure they are doing well and have essential supplies on hand.

“This line is staffed with two experienced RNs who will use IDPH-approved guidelines to assess each patient’s need for evaluation. Please keep in mind these guidelines will continue to evolve as our guidance from IDPH evolves,” the news release concluded.

Students concerned about graduation and prom; no clear answers

BY BECKY KRAMER news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Putnam County School Board members heard an update from Superintendent Carl Carlson in regards to the unprecedented events that are happening in regards to COVID-19 at their March 17 meeting.

Carlson told the board that he has been spending all of his time since the previous Tuesday learning all he could about the virus and learning what is expected of school districts by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

Carlson said, “The administration team worked hard all weekend to ensure everything went smoothly.

We had to take into account the safety of students and staff members.”

Currently the students will be out

of the classrooms through March 30 with e-learning beginning on March 18.

Carlson said that at this time, there is no plan to change the dates of spring break.

Graduation and prom are a concern for seniors and high schoolers, but there is no clear answer at this time.

Carlson said, “I feel for all of the students dealing with the uncertainty.”

One area that parents will not have to worry about is food. Parents are able to sign up for meals for any student under the age of 18 or in the IEP program. As of March 17, there were 18 students signed up. Parents are asked to sign up by 9 a.m. the day before and food can be picked up between 9 and 11 daily at the location that the parents select.

Carlson explained that they should

have enough food for these two weeks without ordering supplies, but the biggest concern is making sure that staff knows how much food to prepare every day.

Board President Rollie Copeland thanked Carlson for all of the work that he and the administrators have put into all of this.

The schools will be open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

In other news: • Carlson is continuing to work on issues that have been happening with the bus routes. He explained that he will be setting up a problem-solving meeting with the bus representatives to discuss some minor ongoing issues as well as exponentially growing concern on the reliability of the company’s contracted service.

Carlson said: “The bus company is experiencing a bus driver shortage. We have had numerous late bus arrivals that have led to the district scrambling to notify parents and causing an increase in frustration

due to not being reliable. Again, the dispatch managers continue to sincerely apologize over and over.

While I can relate to their frustration of being short staffed, the district is also paying a premium dollar for a contracted service. As stated, I will be setting up an individual meeting in the very near future to problem-solve this issue.”

• The state currently owes Putnam County Schools $218,455, which is half of what was owed at this time last year.

• The IHSA membership renewal was renewed, which will allow kids to participate in state tournaments.

• The board accepted with regret the resignations of Kyle Anderson as elementary school P.E. teacher and Leanne Smith as freshman volleyball coach.

• All certified, probationary, non-tenured teachers, paraprofessionals and non-certified staff were rehired.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 20, in the Putnam County Primary School Media Center.

Boggio, Judd win GOP write-in nods for board

BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media HENNEPIN — Putnam County voters overwhelmingly voted March 17 for two of four write-in Republican candidates for two open county board seats.

Keith Boggio captured 102 votes and Jason Judd garnered 81 votes against opponents Cody Grandadam, who got 41 votes, and David Boucher with 12. The two will move on to the general election

ballot in November.

Though no Democrats were on the ballot for this election, Dan Kuhn said the party still can nominate candidates for the general election.

Keith No candidates Boggio stepped forward last fall to run for the county board, which has had the burden of making drastic budget cuts.

Following the overall trend for the

presidential race, Putnam County voters cast their ballots for Biden, with 425 Democratic votes going to the Illinois primary winner and 138 voters putting their support Mark Jason behind Bernie SandJudd ers.

On the Republican side, President Donald Trump took 402 votes, but 7 voters cast their vote for Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente.

A total of 506 votes were cast for Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.

The top vote-getter in the Republican primary to challenge Durbin in November was Mark Curran Jr., who ended the night with 125 votes.

Republican State’s Attorney Christina (Judd) Mennie and Democratic Circuit Clerk Carly Neubaum secured their respective parties’ nominations in uncontested races, with Mennie getting 392 votes and Neubaum 563.

Putnam County Food Pantry will remain open on Saturdays GRANVILLE — Since food pantries are an essential service, the Putnam County Food Pantry will remain open until further notice. The pantry is open every Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. It is located in the basement of the Granville United Church of Christ, 103 N. Church St. In consideration of the coronavirus epidemic, a drive-up system has been implemented. Clients will line up their cars in the pantry parking lot and remain in their cars. A volunteer will greet each car to gather needed information, and volunteers will bring food to the cars.

Bags will be pre-prepared, so choosing items will be discontinued for now.

The Pantry Board thanks its clients for their patience and cooperation and the volunteers and Putnam County community for working to keep the Pantry open.

Marianne was born on January 6, 1935 in Chicago to Walter and Emily (Zavodny) Nowalany. Marianne married Roland Nordstom and later married James O’Connor; they both preceded her in death.

After graduating high school, she was employed by Country Companies Insurance, in Chicaqo, Ill. She became a homemaker, and lived in Addison, Ill. She later moved back to Chicago, in 1964, and became a proofreader at Commerce Clearing House. She also studied art at the School of Art Institute, in Chicago, and then remarried. She moved her family to

Spring Valley killer denied appeal of murder conviction OTTAWA — A killer convicted of a 1994 shooting in Spring Valley has been denied his latest appeal.

Steven A. Taliani, 57, was convicted of the murder of girlfriend Francee Wolf and for shooting and wounding her mother.

In his latest argument, Taliani argued he was innocent of the killing because two medications he’d been prescribed impaired his judgment and kept him from grasping the criminality of his actions.

In a March 18 ruling, the Third District Appellate Court rejected his argument. “(Taliani) also alleged that he was suffering from symptoms associated with serotonin syndrome at the time of the offense — specifically, heightened irritability, confusion and ‘altered consciousness,’” wrote Justice Robert Carter.

The justices noted this was the fifth time Taliani appealed his conviction.

She continued as a member of St John’s Lutheran Church, in Peru, Ill. Survivors include four sons, Matt Nordstrom of Mark, Ill., Jim Nordstrom of Las Vegas, Nev., Mike Nordstrom of Las Vegas, Nev., and Shawn O’Connor of El Paso, Ill.; one daughter, Jeanne Kathryn O’Connor of Peru, Ill.; one sister, Eleanor of Georgia; seven grandchildren, Hailee Anne Weisbrock, Brandyn Joseph Clancy, Christian O’Connor, Jordan Nordstrom, Jennifer Nordstrom, Jeremiah Nordstrom and Cole Nordstrom; and three greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands and one sister.

Perry Memorial Hospital announces visitor restrictions Each patient allowed one essential adult Note to readers: Perry Memorial Hospital released the following information on March 19.

SUBJECT: Perry Visitor Restrictions, Covid-19 ENTRANCE

1. Entry into the Perry Memorial Hospital will be limited to two entry points: • ED/Outpatient Registration 24/7 entrance.

• Medical Office Building Entrance (Park Avenue East), 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. five days a week.

All persons entering Perry buildings will be screened. This will include questions and a temperature check.

2. Each patient will be allowed up to one essential adult (anyone over the age of 18) support person at a time.

If adult support person’s temperature is over 100.4, they will not be allowed in the building.

3. Persons visiting non-Perry owned specialty clinics will also be screened. Non-Perry owned specialty

clinics will determine their ability to continue to care for patients.

4. Prompt Care, Walnut and Henry clinics will remain open for medical appointment visits. Note that those clinics are NOT appropriate if you feel you are experiencing coronavirus symptoms. We request you call the Perry Memorial Family Health Clinic and speak to the staff about your symptoms. You will be provided directions based on this conversation.

Cancellations/Closures Updates

• All hospital-sponsored community events have been canceled.

Be prepared to answer screening questions. Keep in mind, the questions are subject to change based on IDPH/BCHD recommendations.

• Have you traveled in the last 14 days?

• Have you traveled to China, any other country, or a community in the United States where the coronavirus

is spreading?

• Have you had close contact with anyone diagnosed with known coronavirus (COVID-19) infection or who is under evaluation for possible exposure? (Close contact means having been within 6 feet of that person for an extended time or being exposed to their cough or sneeze.)

• Do you have any of the following symptoms: fever, a cough (or other cold or flu-like symptoms), difficulty breathing or shortness of breath?

Step Two

1. First, an influenza test will be performed. This test will have results in approximately 20 minutes.

2. If influenza is negative, a COVID-19 test authorization will be requested from BCHD/ IDPH to receive authorization to administer a COVID-19 test. Results from this test can take up to 72 hours.

3. If a test is requested and not authorized by BCHD/IDPH, the patient will be financially responsible for the testing (some insurances may pay for the test).

o our valued readers: The spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) has quickly developed into one of the most significant events in our nation’s history. People from all walks of life are struggling to adapt to the situation.

You have likely been inundated with updates from various CEOs and organizational leaders. With apologies for the lack of originality, I would like to share what Shaw Media is doing to help cope with the crisis.

A few weeks ago, when it was becoming apparent that we were dealing with a burgeoning crisis, Shaw’s leadership team began working on a contingency plan.

The plan was developed with four goals in mind: 1) Protect the well-being of our employees 2) Do our part to limit the spread of the virus 3) Ensure the continuity of our business 4) Provide reliable information

We put together a work-from-home strategy, and required all employees who could work from home to do just that.

We have temporarily closed our offices to the public, with a reduced number of staff continuing to work in some of our locations. As you may have heard or read, newspapers have been designated as essential businesses by most local governments, meaning employees will be allowed to travel to and from work even in a shelter-inplace situation.

In addition to heroes in health

care, law enforcement and other services, our journalists and newspaper delivery crews also are unsung heroes during these times.

They are working diligently to make sure the news is delivered to you in print and digital formats.

For the continuity of our business, we have implemented strategies to ensure we can maintain our ability to report on significant events, even though much of the reporting and processing of the news has to be done from remote locations.

Unfortunately, our company, like so many other small to mid-sized local businesses, is bracing for an economic impact. A significant portion of our revenue stems from advertising, and businesses generally don’t advertise when they are closed. This temporary reduction in revenue will place great stress on our company. We will do everything possible to keep our service to you uninterrupted.

Amid COVID-19 pandemic, let’s pull together to face crisis

hese are extraordinary times, and people around our communities and our country are being asked to make sacrifices in the name of stopping the spread of a pandemic illness.

It has not been easy, nor will it be — but it’s critical that we all stay calm and pull together as we ride this out. That means supporting local businesses, treating others well, and in general doing the best we can to set a good example, take care of ourselves and support our communities.

Our society is based on civil liberties and the rights of individuals. It’s natural that this collective response and limits on our freedom go against our grain.

However, consider the big picture: COVID-19 is a pandemic disease that already has had devastating effects on authoritarian societies such as China and western democ-

racies such as Italy. Failure to take decisive steps to avoid such outcomes in this country would be unforgivable.

We must remember that this situation is temporary, and also resolve that it will be. Let’s have patience as we adjust to the new limitations on our daily lives — but not unlimited patience. It already is clear that this abrupt halt to economic activity will have consequences. We can’t drive ourselves and our neighbors to ruin as we try to stave off this health crisis.

However, now is the time to pull

together. There are many ways we can do our part as we face down this public health crisis. Perhaps most importantly, follow the advice of health experts. Wash your hands frequently. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your home and office. Cover coughs and sneezes. Stay home when you can, and definitely stay home if you are feeling ill. Keep at least six feet from other people in public, and avoid any gatherings of more than 10.

Another step is to spend what money we can with local small businesses. This newspaper’s website includes a regularly updated listing of local restaurants offering take-out service and how to contact them. Maybe spend some of the money that you’re saving on gas or other leisure activities with one of your local establishments, either by making a purchase or

buying a gift card. Helping local businesses stay afloat is a great way to help your local community.

We also can help our neighbors and reduce the general anxiety by not hoarding supplies. Artificial scarcity makes the situation seem more dire. As the American Farm Bureau Federation says, our country’s farmers and ranchers are committed to ensuring Americans have stable access to healthy, affordable food.

When you do go out, be kind to people. There’s no need to drive recklessly or to be rude to a store clerk. We’re all subject to the same stresses, and we’re all in this together.

Finally, remember: This is a battle that we will win. This crisis will pass, and it will pass sooner if we all pull together. When it does, we will emerge, we will celebrate, and we will prosper once again.

BUREAU, PUTNAM AND MARSHALL COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENTS Health department announces temporary changes in services Hector Gomez, administrator of the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments, has announced a temporary change in services at the health department offices in Princeton, Hennepin and Lacon.

As part of a plan being activated to help contain the spread of COVID-19 and protect the department’s clients and staff, the BPMCHD will be suspending some

non-critical services and changing the way other services are delivered until further notice. These changes took effect at the end of business on Friday, March 20.

• Routine lab draws are suspended, effective immediately.

• The dental clinic in Princeton is closed, effective immediately.

• Immunizations are suspended, effective immediately.

• Unless deemed high priority, food inspections will be limited.

IN BRIEF Gateway closes Princeton, Henry sites due to pandemic In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Illinois Department of Human Services has required that all community day services sites be closed effective Tuesday, March 17. They will remain closed through at least April 15.

Gateway Services Inc. in Princeton stated on Facebook, “This will impact our sites in Princeton at 406 S. Gosse Blvd. and in Henry at 511 School St. Sites are expected to remain closed until April

15th. Individuals and guardians have been notified. Doors at our main building will be locked, and any visitors will need to be buzzed in as we do our part to stay safe and healthy.

“Gateway’s 6 CILA (24 hour residential program) homes are also restricting visitors. Individuals will still be encouraged to talk on the phone, FaceTime or Skype with loved ones. We are taking all necessary precautions to screen employees and individuals to be aware of any potential symptoms. ...

OGLESBY — The parents of Trevor Wehner have established a scholarship in his memory at Illinois Valley Community College.

Wehner, of Sheridan, graduated from IVCC in 2017 before transferring to Northern Illinois University.

He was killed Feb. 15, 2019 — his senior year at Northern — in a shooting at an Aurora factory where he was interning.

The Trevor Melvin Wehner Scholarship is being established through the IVCC Foundation by Trevor’s parents, Bonnie Rich and Tom Wehner, both of Sheridan. In addition, an anonymous donor contributed $1,000 to the scholarship fund.

The Wehners will award $1,000 each to a female and male student annually for tuition, books and related expenses. Applicants must demonstrate significant involvement in school activities and community service. The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in September.

Trevor was a 2015 graduate of Serena High School before earning A.S. and A.A. degrees from IVCC. He received a B.S. in Human Resources

Management from NIU in 2019.

Unfortunately, the bachelor’s degree was awarded posthumously as his life was tragically taken in a workplace shooting on his first day as an intern. Wehner, just 21, was one of five people killed that day.

Trevor is remembered for a smile that would light up a room and for making friends easily with everyone — young and old alike. He loved sports, especially baseball, and made his mark as a pitcher at IVCC. “Trevor was a blast … so much fun to be around,” said IVCC baseball coach Jason Goode. “A great sense of humor and very laid back. But he was also very focused and had a plan for what he was going to do with his life.”

Trevor’s mother Bonnie recently told the Chicago Tribune, “I believe we are doing something wonderful in Trevor’s memory. And because of the scholarship foundation, many will be able to pursue their dreams and realize their potential for many years to come, something that was senselessly taken from Trevor.”

Little Free Pantry sites provide emergency help

STANDARD — For those times when a local family or senior citizen needs help “in a pinch,” Putnam County’s Little Free Pantry will be there, 24-7.

A Little Free Pantry is located in the outer entryway of the Putnam County Community Center on First Street in Standard. Another will be located in the outer entryway of the McNabb Public Library on Main Street in McNabb. Patrons are asked to take only what they might need for the day so that others may also benefit.

The project was launched and funded by Putnam County Rotary, with assistance of a Rotary District matching grant, to offer emergency assistance to all PC residents — including those who also qualify for monthly PC Food Pantry pickups. The project also includes a new refrigerator located in the kitchen of the PC Community Center. Pantry donations may also include fresh produce and prepared foods when the PC Community Center is open.

Following the “Little Free Library” concept, with similar mini-pantries popping up throughout the Illinois Valley, it is hoped that community members will help stock the shelves, and those in need will feel welcome to take what might be needed for the day on an emergency basis.

PCES students vote for their favorite 2020 Rebecca Caudill Book HENNEPIN — Three Putnam County Elementary School fifth graders gathered to vote for their favorite 2020 Rebecca Caudill title on Feb. 19.

Students have been participating in the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award this school year, selecting books to read from the 20 nominees. To be eligible to attend the party, students had to read at least three titles from the list, discuss the book with Lori Mertel and complete a worksheet detailing elements of the book. Students and staff enjoyed cookies, soda and ice cream with toppings.

Students liked many of the books and there was a three-way tie: “Restart” by Gordan Korman,

“Space Case” by Stuart Gibbs and “The Truth as Told by Mason Buttle” by Leslie Connor. All votes were submitted to the state Rebecca Caudill website, and an overall favorite of all students in the state of Illinois will be announced in March.

The following fifth-grade students participated: 5A — Yesenia Avila; 5B — Evean Siegmann; and 5C — Kale Coleman.

So far, many Rebecca Caudill nominees have been read. Students have until April 30 to read all 20 if they choose to do so.

Area students participate in dance marathon for children’s hospital IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa’s student-led Dance Marathon raised more than $2.8 million for the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital in its 26th

year. Dance Marathon is the UI’s largest student organization. It has raised more than $30 million since its first event in 1995.

Area students participating in the event were Madelyn Dzierzynski of Hennepin, and Hannah Yerly and Julia Pohar of Peru.

Olson, Pyszka ‘just love the game of baseball’ Coach Newsome welcomes 14 varsity players for season

Note to readers: Because of the coronavirus pandemic, IHSA baseball activities have been suspended for the time being.

Putnam County baseball coach Chris Newsome welcomes 14 varsity players for the 2020 season with a number of players back who provide power, speed and average.

“I think we’re going to have a nice balance of power and average throughout the lineup this season,” Newsome said. “Not a lot of teams at any level of high school have that and this year I think we do along with some experience, so we’ll see what happens.”

The Panthers have a couple of All Tri-County Conference selections leading the way. First-team selection and recent Danville Community College signee Luke Olson returns at pitcher.

Olson, a hard-throwing right hander who will anchor the Panthers’ rotation, pitched 26 1/3 innings with a 4.78 ERA last season.

He also hit .310.

Jakob Pyszka also returns at pitcher after earning Second-Team AllTri-County Conference last year.

“Both kids just love the game of baseball,” Newsome said. “Pyszka is a very quick player who can hopefully steal some bases for us as well and will most likely spend the majority of time at shortstop.”

The Panthers also welcome back Brayden Holmes, who developed into a nice shortstop for Putnam County the past three years, but he will slide over to second base this spring.

“He started out playing shortstop out of necessity and then developed into a pretty good one for us,” Newsome said. “But he was in a nasty motocross accident in the fall and hurt his wrist so he’ll slide over to second. Thankfully, swinging the bat doesn’t bother his wrist though.”

Seniors Jacob Williams and Max Megana will play key roles. Williams will pitch and man center field, while Megana will play first, third and catcher.

Kyle Gorisek saw some time on the mound last season but will log more innings this spring. He’ll also see time at third base.

Jacob Wiesbrock, who Newsome described as a contact hitter who provides speed on the base paths, will man a corner outfield spot.

Ben Cyr is the only southpaw in the PC bullpen.

“Ben is golfer No. 1,” Newsome said. “That’s his first priority. He doesn’t pick up a baseball before or after the season, but once he gets back in the groove, he’s a good spot pitcher for us.”

Sophomore Chris Uzella and junior Stephen Mecagni are battling for the starting catcher position.

“As a former pitcher, I love having a three-year starter at catcher to build that relationship with your pitchers,” Newsome said. “Both receive really well. Chris probably has a stronger arm, but it might come down to situations and who is hitting better.”

Pyszka is expected to hit for a high average as will Olson, but Olson will provide power as well.

Holmes will be another nice bat for Putnam County and Magagna will be expected to contribute at the plate. Gorisek showed some

pop in early practices.

“Both Williams and Wiesbrock are more of put the ball in play kind of guys,” Newsome said.

“We also have guys who can provide power behind them, so it’s a nice mix of average, speed and power in the lineup. But I guarantee the lineup in game one will not be the lineup we end up with at the end of the year. We’ll see how things shape up over the course of the season.”

Newsome said Marquette, which won the Class 1A state title last year, is again the favorite in the Tri-County Conference.

“I would be a fool if I didn’t say Marquette is the favorite,” Newsome said. “Coming off a state championship and only losing one or whatever it was, but they’re good and I thought we played them very tough. They know they have the bullseye on their back. Roanoke-Benson was young, but now should have some experience to go with that talent. Peoria Christian plays tough. Not necessarily the best in conference, but plays us tough. Henry lost a lot, but the (Ethan) Condit kid is pretty good.

There is no off night in this conference. It’s pretty tough.”

Further restrictions put on access to courthouse HENNEPIN — On the authority of the Presiding Circuit Judge James A. Mack, Sheriff Kevin L. Doyle and County Board Chairman Steven O. Malavolti of Putnam County, and in accordance with Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s pronouncements of March 20, all prior orders and press releases are hereby supplemented and to the extent inconsistent herewith are superseded as follows: It is expected that no member of

the public will be allowed in the Putnam County Courthouse from now through April 5, 2020, absent specific orders from the aforesaid authorities.

Members of essential staff (at reduced numbers) may still appear during this time to conduct essential court/government business.

Governmental functions may still be addressed on line or by phone. Necessary papers may be dropped off at the sheriff ’s office and they will be

delivered to the directed office.

Court proceedings (absent jury trials) may still be heard remotely by phone or video conference per prior administrative orders and the presiding judge’s approval.

Although Stickel is retiring, he plans to remain active in the community. He also has plans to travel and spend time with family.

During his tenure with the bank, Stickel has navigated through some the best and most challenging times in the industry. His commitment and contribution are evidenced by the success and growth of the bank.

The Board of Directors has named Michael J. Cummings as successor executive vice president.
