HENNEPIN — Early voting for the April 6 consolidated election has begun at Putnam County Courthouse.

County Clerk Dan Kuhn said early voting so far has been very slow.

“We’ve only had about 15 so far,” he said.

Kuhn said he predicts “about a 30% turnout for the election” and says that’s probably a high estimate.

The county isn’t seeing much competition, with almost no contested races and only one candidate on the ballot for Granville, Hennepin, Magnolia, Standard and Mark village presidents, each of which is an incumbent. No candidate is on the ballot for McNabb village president.

Hennepin’s trustee race has four candidates running for three spots: Christian Cyr, Quentin Buffington, Teresa Clausen and Lynn Haage.

Other trustee races within the county are uncontested.

“A consolidated election after the

2020 Presidential Election is going to be slow,” he said. “People are worn out. They have voter fatigue.”

The consolidated election will take place April 6. Early voting can be done at Putnam County Courthouse during normal business hours.

MARSHALL, PUTNAM COUNTIES

NRCS announces application cutoff for special conservation projects in Marshall, Putnam counties State Conservationist Ivan Dozier announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will offer funding in Marshall and Putnam counties for the Mississippi River Basin Big Bend Enhancing Water-Soil-Habitat Quality project through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP).

NRCS has partnered with the Marshall-Putnam Soil and Water Conservation District to help producers address resource concerns such as degraded water quality and soil erosion. Producers can apply for assistance through the Conser-

vation Stewardship Program (CSP) which allows producers to build on their existing conservation efforts while strengthening their operation through special conservation activities that are offered. The project focus is to improve water quality in Marshall and Putnam counties.

Financial assistance will be available to eligible producers whose land is located in Marshall and Putnam counties. While applications are accepted throughout the year, interested producers should submit a signed application (NRCSCPA-1200 form) to the local NRCS

field office, or through the Farmers. gov website using their account, by the cutoff date of May 7, to ensure their applications are considered for 2021 funding. A blank NRCSCPA-1200 application form may be obtained from the local office or on the Illinois NRCS website. Producers wishing to use Farmers.gov, can sign in or create an account by clicking on “Sign up” in the upper right of the website.

To see if you are eligible to participate in the program, producers should contact their local NRCS field office or visit the Illinois NRCS website at www.il.nrcs.usda.gov.

Yednock named vice chairman of Agriculture and Conservation Committee State Rep. Lance Yednock (D-Ottawa) was been named vice chairman of the Agriculture and Conservation Committee for the 102nd Illinois General Assembly.

“Agriculture and farming are the lifeblood of our state, especially here in the Illinois Valley,” Yednock said. “Supporting agriculture and preserving the integrity of our small farms has been a top priority of mine since day one and I can’t wait to take that focus statewide. There is so much work to

be done and I’m ready to get to work in this role.”

In addition to Yednock’s role in the Agriculture and Conservation Committee, he also has been appointed to the House committees on Labor and Commerce, Public Utilities, Transportation: Vehicles and Safety, Veterans’ Affairs, and has been named chairman of the Utilities Subcommittee for the duration of the 102nd General Assembly.

HENNEPIN — The Park District will be sponsoring activities over spring break.

On Friday, April 2, they will have an Easter egg hunt on their lawn.

They will have plastic eggs that participants can collect. Each egg will have an Easter treat in them. Ages 0-3 will hunt their eggs on the front lawn at 10 a.m. Ages 4–first grade will hunt their eggs on the north lawn at 10:30 a.m. Grades 2-5 will hunt their eggs on the south lawn at 11 a.m. The Easter Bunny will be present. The Easter egg hunt will be free to all who participate.

Putnam County Rotary in gear to serve

When the going gets tough, volunteers get going — as they have this month, with new projects added to those annually sponsored by the Putnam County Rotary Club.

In the past month, the community service group remembered residents at the Illinois Veterans Home and Liberty Village with a flurry of Valentines Day cards from members and volunteers.

The club also launched a project to “pack the van” with supplies needed

by PADS Homeless Shelter in Peru, and members put together a meal for clients and staff there, served on March 6.

Also this past month, the club is completing a project to renovate a common-area room for victims of domestic abuse at Freedom House in

Princeton, funded in part by a Rotary District grant.

Another new project launched last month expands the club’s Rotary Readers Program through which Rotarians and volunteers read monthly to primary and elementary school students. Unable to do so in person this year, Rotary Readers have video-recorded a number of stories, uploaded to the school’s distance learning platform and accessible by teachers and parents. The club plans to add more videos later this month.

The club also continues to regularly stock two Little Free Pantries, initiated with a prior Rotary grant just as the pandemic began to take its toll a year ago. The Little Free Pantries, located in the entryways of the Putnam County Community Center in

Standard and the McNabb Library, are accessible 24-7 to help meet area residents’ short-term emergency needs.

Also in the coming month, the club will co-host a Red Cross blood drive with the Rotary-sponsored PCHS Interact Club, on Friday, April 16, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Granville American Legion. The drive is needed to help meet emergency blood demands — and has the added benefit of adding to Red Cross scholarship awards for selected graduating seniors who volunteer or participate in school-related blood drives.

The club will also select several graduating seniors to receive Putnam County Rotary scholarship awards that will be presented in May, recognizing drive, determination and

student commitment to community service.

As PC Rotary “gears up” to serve the community, Tina Dolder, club president, and Brenda Bickerman, president-elect, say more members, and more volunteers, are needed.

Several new members and volunteers have stepped forward this past month, with the hope that more will be added to the roster so that the club can expand the reach of its service projects.

STANDARD — Joseph C. Ellena was the guest of honor at a party held before the monthly meeting of the Standard Fire Department on March 1. Among the attendees were Joseph’s father and grandfather along with fellow members of the department as well as other friends.

The occasion was a celebration of Joe’s successful completion of the basic firefighting operations course, which is part of the Firefighter II Academy held at MABAS Division 57 in Princeton.

The course runs over a span of six months, and consists of more than 200 hours of practicals, classroom and testing which is necessary to become a State Certified Firefighter. This is the “boot camp” of the fire service. With the completion of this course, all Joe needs to receive his certification is two weeks of Hazmat training and one final test.

As an additional honor, Joe was also presented with the “Firemanship Award” plaque and certificate from the Princeton Academy. This award is given in recognition of “strong hands-on skills, high academic

achievement, and strong leadership qualities”.

Joe had always wanted to be a firefighter and he started early by becoming a cadet, (sometimes known as a junior firefighter) with Standard Fire Department at age 14.

Cadets take a lot of teasing from the “old guys,” wash many fire trucks, and pack a lot of fire hose while learning the ropes, but Joe stuck with it. He became a full-member firefighter with Standard in 2018 at age 18.

Joe had a lot of motivation, in that he is a fifth generation firefighter with the Standard Fire Department.

At the expense of sounding redundant, four of the Ellena family had the first name of “Joe”. Only Joe’s father, through no fault of his own, broke tradition by being named “John”.

Joe C. Ellena became the first of his family to aspire to the level of State Certified FF. His father, John Ellena, served as an assistant chief of Standard, while his grandfather, Joe A. Ellena, who joined the department in 1970, became its longest run-

Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, B negative and A negative. According to the Red Cross, type O negative is the universal blood type that can be safely transfused to anyone, and is often used to treat trauma patients.

Applications available for Putnam County Educational Foundation scholarships GRANVILLE — The Putnam County Educational Foundation (PCEF) has announced the availability of scholarship applications for the 2021-22 school year.

Each year, the PCEF administers the awarding of nearly $40,000 worth of scholarships to Putnam

The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation (SRCCF) has good news for students seeking scholarships. The Foundation recognizes that it is far more difficult to communicate with students and parents in these challenging times with virtual schooling and restrictions due to the pandemic. PCES students vote for their favorite Bluestem Book

Putnam County Elementary School fourth- and fifth-grade students participating in the Bluestem Book Award Program, sponsored by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators (AISLE), voted for their favorite book on March 12. This is the 11th year for the Bluestem Award book program at Putnam County Elementary School in Hennepin.

Students who read at least four of the 20 books on the list were eligible to vote for their favorite book. Students also had to complete a worksheet on the book. They could discuss the book with Media Paraprofessional Lori Mertel or take an online quiz. Twelve students were eligible to vote. Students and staff enjoyed brownies, juice and ice cream with toppings.

More than $1,500 raised for food bags, other projects Sixteen Illinois Valley Community College students in-need received food bags March 9 and 10 thanks to a drive initiated by staff members Carey Burns and Kim Herout.

The bags contained dried pasta, sauces, soups, chili, rice, noodle dishes, peanut butter, jelly, bread, quick oats, fruit cups, cookies, crackers, fresh fruit, cheese and pantry staples such as cooking oil and ketchup.

Proceeds from the Support Staff Service Project Craft Fair raised more than $1,500 split between the food bags and another project.

Burns said a “large clothing and accessory donation” will also be made to Lily Pads Resale Boutique.

IVCC partners with other colleges, local entities for manufacturing academy grant

Illinois Valley Community College received support in its quest to create the Central Illinois Manufacturing Academy with three other community colleges.

IVCC, Illinois Central, Lincoln Land and Spoon River recently applied for a $7.5 million Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant to establish the academy.

“Illinois Central College President Sheila Quirk Bailey deserves tremendous recognition for her vision in pulling us all together,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said. “If funded, this will have a profound effect on the current and future workforce needs of central Illinois manufacturers.”

Corcoran credited 17 district manufacturers, nine mayors, five chambers of commerce, five community-based organizations, an economic development director, two legislators and 15 superintendents for writing support letters for

the initiative.

The state is expected to choose two academy sites by early spring so they can be underway in the fall.

Also on Feb. 25, the board approved: Tenure for instructors Kevin Hermes, criminal justice, Amber Fox, accounting, and Jessie Bouxsein, nursing.

Changes to 100 course fees including 81 increases, 12 new courses, one decrease, removal of course fees from five courses and the assignment of course fees to one existing course.

A resolution designating the fiscal year as July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022, and the budget calendar.

Transfer of $539,063 to a Capital Development Board trust account at Midland States Bank to cover the anticipated local match for the air moisture infiltration deferred maintenance project.

A 16-credit Agricultural Studies certificate to provide basic under-

standing of the industry. “Businesses need qualified employees to fill entry-level positions,” Corcoran said.

CHARLIE ELLERBROCK cellerbrock@shawmedia.com GRANVILLE — They may not have the length of bone that their former teammates had, but this year’s edition of the Marquette Academy volleyball still packs a wallop and plays feisty, especially when its back is against the wall.

In their first match of the season, the Lady Crusaders twice trailed host Putnam County late in the set 21-17 in the first and 21-16 in the second - and twice got terrific service runs and standout net play down the stretch to win, claiming a 25-21, 25-21, Tri-County Conference victory here in R.M. Germano Gymnasium on March 18.

Addie McConnaughhay followed a serve error for sideout with seven straight MA points to close the first game. In the second set, after an Evelyn Biggins kill was called on the line for sideout, sophomore Lindsey Kaufmann reeled off eight points in a row to take Marquette from the brink of a disappointing two-set loss to a thrilling two-set win just in the nick of time.

“When their backs were against the wall, the girls came through huge when they needed to most,” said MA coach Mindy McConnaughhay. “This being our first game, in the first set you saw some jitters, but once we they relaxed and got into the flow, we were just fine, and that’s the big thing right now.

Everyone’s had only one week to get ready and learn to play together, and we have three seniors and three

sophomores on the floor. They did a great job.

“Addie had a great run, then Lindsey had another … and the girls came through on the block too and covered the blocks well. The defense was aggressive and made a lot of great plays tonight.”

Addie McConnaughhay ended with 10 kills, three aces and seven digs, while Biggins added eight kills and three blocks for MA. Sophia Harris led the Panthers with six kills and a block, and Gabbie Smith with 12 assists.

PC (0-2, 0-2), looking at the start like a team that already had a game under its belt, used a four-point service burst from Linzee Fay to snare a 12-5 lead. However, a Kaufmann kill for sideout and a five-point string by Paige Cottingim quickly got MA back in it. A pair of points

by McKenna Solomon and later a kill by Caitlyn Cioni helped pull the Lady Panthers out to that 21-17 advantage.

But then McConnaughhay got hot, an ace and a backward tip by setter Kaylee Killelea forcing a PC timeout, then adding another ace between a McCallum block and a Cottingim kill to take the visitors to the edge.

A five-point run by Emma Edens opened up a 17-12 Panthers lead in the second set, with a kill by Fay leaving the gap at 21-16. That’s where Biggins blasted for sideout and Kaufmann got on a roll, scoring on two McConnaughhay kills, two kills and a block by Biggins and, after a PC hitting error, another kill

“I just think we had a really hard time finishing tonight,” said PC coach Amy Bell. “We’d get out to a lead, and they’d get a hot server back there and we’d lose the lead and couldn’t finish. We had a bad break at the end of the first game and lost our rhythm, and then in the second game, we lost (rhythm) again. Finishing games is definitely

something to work on. … We just need to have the confidence to put balls away and finish.

“The girls were more aggressive at the net, and defensively we played better, serve-receive was a lot better, and we played solid defense tonight, and the passing came a long way from Tuesday night. There were little improvements and the good news is, we’re playing a lot of games in a short amount of time.”

Volleyball team starts fast in season-opening win over Putnam County CHARLIE ELLERBROCK cellerbrock@shawmedia.com SENECA — When Seneca High School athletic director Steve Haines said in March 16’s pregame introductions that it had been exactly 498 days since the last time there was a varsity volleyball game in that gym, there were a few gasps and some head shaking among the fans scattered in the stands across from the scorers table.

Not so from the Fighting Irish themselves. The way they came out for their season opener against Putnam County only a few minutes later, they must have been anxiously counting every tick of that clock.

A sideout kill by Maddie Bromberek, a seven-point service run

by Addie Eltrevoog and a six-point burst by Bromberek sent the Fighting Irish out to a 17-2 lead in the opening set and basically set the tone for the entire evening.

What resulted was a 25-10, 25-16 Seneca victory over Tri-County Conference rival Putnam County.

The hosts collected 13 aces and saw Eltrevoog end with 16 points and four aces and Bromberek 13 kills, six points and two aces.

Sophia Harris was solid for Putnam County, collecting five kills and two blocks, while Gabby Smith added seven assists, but Seneca’s fast start was just too much to overcome.

With several key players just coming off basketball, the Putnam County volleyball team didn’t have much practice time with the entire roster before the shortened spring season got underway.

“I think it will just be a challenge at the beginning of the season to get in a rhythm quickly since the season is so short and with it overlapping with the winter sports for the first week,” Putnam County coach Amy Bell said. “We have been focusing a lot on passing and defense so hopefully we are able to run an effective offense.”

The Lady Panthers have several players who finished the basketball season March 13, and the volleyball team opens March 16.

“We have just been trying to get as many touches in practice as possible before the first match,” Bell said. “I have really stressed the importance of communication since we will not have a lot of time to work through that before the first match.”

Despite the quick turnaround from one season to the next, the Lady Panthers have the advantage of a senior-laden roster.

Putnam County’s senior class includes middle blockers Sophia Harris and McKenna Solomon, outside hitter Caitlyn Cioni, outside hitter/defensive specialist Olivia Lamis, defensive specialist Emma Edens, right-side hitter Melanie Trinidad and setter Gabbie Smith.

“We have a solid group of seniors with some great leadership skills,” Bell said. “They are always positive and supportive of their teammates.”

Bell said she expects Harris to be a big presence in the middle of the net for PC. “Sophia Harris did a great job in the middle for us last year and I expect her to put up a big block and provide a quick option for us offensively,” Bell said.

Along with the six seniors, the Lady Panthers also will look to six juniors to contribute in outside hitter/right-side hitter Zofia Uzella, setter Linzee Fay, defensive specialist/right-side hitter Jaidin Trone, defensive specialist Laci Calkins, and middle hitters Sydney Miller and Renae Ramey.

“I was happy to see the girls fight

back in the second set and to continue to work hard and play hard,” Putnam County coach Amy Bell said. “It was a rough night on serve-receive. I was looking for the girls to communicate well together and make some adjustments because we’ve had so little time together. Monday was the first time I’ve had them all together.

“Sophia did a really nice job in the second set, finding their stud middle and getting some really nice touches on the blocks, and Olivia Lamis had a nice run of serves. But I think Seneca is a very talented team. [Champene] returns a ton of kids and it doesn’t look like they’ve lost much.”
