Approximately three dozen Putnam County High School students joined with thousands of others across the nation to voice their concerns over the frightening combination of guns and schools. The walkout was held on March 14 in honor of the 17 people killed during the mass shooting at Florida’s Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14. The event was organized by student Ryan Caulfield, whose statement was a respectful call to action. He said, as many others have, that something, rather than nothing, must be done to prevent another mass murder within an American school. He also called on his fellow students to cross their social boundaries and reach out to those who may be feeling alone and isolated.

MWC Tournament comes to Spring Valley this weekend

Suspect in Diamond Bradley case has next hearing scheduled for Tuesday, April 17

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Under increased security, Richard A. Henderson, the 26-year-old Standard man whom investigators believe stabbed and killed Diamond Bradley, the 16-yearold Spring Valley girl he met online, has had his next court appearance scheduled for April 17.

Henderson is charged with the Class 3 felony of concealment Richard A. of a homicide death Henderson and is being held at the LaSalle County Jail on a $1 million bond. It’s expected by both the prosecution and the defense that additional charges are likely.

Well prior to appearing in front of Judge Diamond Stephen A. Kouri, HenBradley derson had been placed in the law library adjacent to the courtroom with his attorney, public defender Roger Bolin.

Five bailiffs were present in the courtroom, and Henderson’s hands and feet were shackled.

Bolin, who has requested a jury trial, reported to Kouri his previous

request for discovery information had been complied with by Putnam County State’s Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie.

At Henderson’s hearing on March 1, Bolin announced he had three concerns to work out with the office of the state’s attorney.

The first was for the preservation of electronic evidence. Judd-Mennie said after that hearing that it was a request any cell phones or computers seized during the investigation be kept in good condition. Bolin stated at the most recent hearing that he’d received a digital copy of the current discovery evidence and that one electronic device remained in the possession of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The second was what Mennie said was a standard and required by law, sharing of evidence obtained during the discovery phase. Bolin’s third request was for the field notes from the investigating agencies.

Other investigating agencies include the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Spring Valley Police Department, the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office, the LaSalle Police Department, Tri-DENT, the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, the Putnam County State’s Attorney, the Bureau County State’s Attorney, the Putnam

County Death Investigator and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services.

Judd-Mennie said she’s still anticipating the receipt of the test results and lab reports pertinent to the case and that the information will be shared with the defense once received.

Diamond Bradley was last was seen by her family the evening of Jan. 23 and was reported missing the following morning. Her body was found Jan. 27 alongside 850th North Road in Putnam County; she had been stabbed multiple times.

According to Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle, who spoke at a previous press conference at the Spring Valley Jail, investigators think the two met online and that Henderson picked the girl up near her home between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 24. Henderson then allegedly drove to the remote road where her body was found and killed her after an altercation.

Henderson was arrested after being interviewed at the police station. Tips, interviews, surveillance cameras and pings from Diamond’s cellphone link him to her death, Doyle has said.

Judge Kouri set the time and date for the next hearing for 11:45 a.m. on April 17.

Although officials are still waiting for results and reports to be completed, Doyle said investigators are confident they’ve arrested the man responsible for the killing.

The Illinois River is widely considered one of the continent’s top sauger fisheries and produces sag-bellied walleyes as well. Such exceptional multi-species potential is often reflected in the final standings.

In 2017, for example, Iowans Marty Berns and Maury Schmerbach rallied to win the MWC Spring Valley tournament with a 33-pound, 15-ounce total weight anchored by an 8-pound, 9-ounce walleye.

Walleyes, saugers and saugeyes 14 inches and over will all be fair game for anglers competing in the tournament.

MAGNOLIA — Peggy Smith, curator of the Magnolia Township Preservation Association (MTPA), has announced its local history museum is open to the public.

Located at 110 N. Peoria St. in Magnolia, the museum will also soon be hosting many programs in the MTPA community room.

The first program scheduled will be about the Underground Railroad. Presented by Sandy Woest, it will begin at 1 p.m. on March 24 and will include refreshments.

The next program will feature Becky (McGhiey) Richards-Siegman reminiscing about her childhood in Magnolia Township. The presentation will begin at 10 a.m. on April 9.

The MTPA museum has also recently installed a wheelchair lift for improved accessibility. The lift was purchased with a contribution from recently deceased board member Eleanor (Bunting) McCoy and donations from MTPA and community members.

Outreach worker will soon begin canvassing communities

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com STANDARD — One of the challenges of living in a rural or somewhat remote area is accessibility, especially if you’re one of the increasing number of senior citizens who live alone or are challenged with limited mobility.

To assist local residents in receiving the help they’re eligible for, outreach workers from the Putnam County Community Center (PCCC) in Standard annually canvas the area to offer assistance.

“Outreach is a one-on-one visit, usually in the home, that the PCCC uses to identify potential clients or their caregivers and encourage the use of existing services and benefits,” Michelle Halm, PCCC executive director, said.

Granville resident Janice Holst began working at the center in September, but now that winter has passed, she’ll be using the upcoming warmer months to begin visiting communities door-todoor.

She’ll be introducing herself to locals and will be providing information about the services

“In case of a disaster or emergency, they can then be easily located and checked on,” Holst said.

• Informing persons or caregivers of the benefits and services for which they’re eligible and then assisting them with gaining access to those services.

• Encouraging the aging population to participate in some of the wide variety of senior programs offered at the PCCC. • Conducting follow-up visits or phone calls to determine whether services have been received and that needs have been met following referrals.

• Providing client advocacy to secure needed benefits.

• Providing community presentations that link the aging population to services and benefits.

“I’m looking forward to visiting everyone in our communities and providing them with any help they may need,” Holst said.

As Holst begins canvassing the county, she’ll have identification both on herself and her car.

Bottom Road bridge continues to deteriorate

HENNEPIN — Illinois’ financial situation continues to deteriorate, much like each attempt to bolster the eroding land around Putnam County’s Bottom Road bridge.

As the state has previously made drastic cuts to road maintenance funding, the future of large projects has becomes more questionable.

Pat Sloan, Marshall-Putnam County highway engineer, reported at a previous Putnam County Board meeting that the new state budget is going to result in a 50 percent reduction in local road maintenance projects.

During the board’s March 12 meeting, the condition of the Bottom Road bridge was discussed.

“We’re investigating slope stabilization alternatives to the 500-foot section of Bottom Road which continues to fail,” Sloan said.

“A review of the patching history

of this section indicates that the life cycle cost of this is about $15,000 per year, which suggests a more permanent fix would save money in the long run,” he said.

Preliminary engineering work has already been conducted at the site, which is one of the three bridges in the county classified as being in poor condition, and $2.5 million will be required to correct their deficiencies.

Sloan said he inspects the condition of the Bottom Road Bridge every three months, whereas most are inspected every two years.

Vehicle revenue is generated through a combination of the Motor Fuel Tax (MFT), which is paid at the fuel pump, and through vehicle registration fees. According to Sloan, local agencies will now receive 20 percent of these funds and the state will receive 60 percent. Previously, 40 percent of these funds were returned to local agencies.

Marshall-Putnam County highway engineer ferred $300 million in expenses from the state’s General Fund to the Illinois Department of Transportation, which in turn cut local road payments by $50 million.

“During the last 15 years, our purchasing power has decreased by more than 60 percent, meaning that counting both the decreased share of revenue we’ve raised and its decreased purchasing power, we can only do a fifth of what we did in 2000,” Sloan previously said.

He said Putnam County has 14 miles of road reconstruction projects estimated to cost an additional $3 million.

Sloan also announced the bidding for the season’s upcoming MFT road projects will open at 10:30 a.m. on March 21 at the Marshall County Highway Department and that there

Festival 56 announces new leadership

GRANVILLE — Madalyn R. Nanni, 53, of Granville died Monday, March 5, 2018, at her home.

Born May 20,1964, in Spring Valley to the late Mearl and Shirley Roth Cordes, she married Richard “Rick” Nanni June 5, 1995, in Portage, Wis. She worked for over 20 years in geriatric care, later spending over 10 years at Illinois Valley Urological Group.

Maddie is survived by her husband, Rick; her sisters, Beverly Kocher of Henry, Phyllis Bianchi of Granville, Valerie (Jim) Hofer of Putnam, Debbie (JR) Coan of Colorado, Elizabeth (Ken) Roberson of Magnolia, Michelle Haage of Granville and Danelle (Jim) Yuhas of McNabb; her brother, David (Dawn) Cordes of Bloomington; 15 nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Audrey Miller.

Maddie loved life, Wisconsin Dells, Green Bay Packers and riding on the back of Rick’s bike.

The love she shared with family, especially her sisters, was strong.

Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Iafrate is a stage director, musical director, arts educator and musician who serves as the director of musical theatre at Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y. He has been the producing artistic director of the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre, a professional summer-stock theater in Clinton, Iowa.

Upgrades OK’d for security, accessibility OGLESBY — Kevin Hermes, a policeman for nearly 30 years, was introduced March 8 as the new leader of Illinois Valley Community College’s criminal justice program.

Hermes has worked the past 17 years as a policeman in Bensenville, a village located near O’Hare International Airport. He has also worked for the Northern Illinois UniKevin versity Police DepartHermes ment and taught online classes for Southern New Hampshire University.

In addition, he is nearing completion of his Ph.D. in criminal justice from Nova Southeastern UniverJerry sity in Fort LauderCorcoran dale.

Hermes attended the IVCC board meeting with his wife, Sherianne. His appointment begins Aug. 13 and fills a vacancy left by the retirement of Rebecca Donna.

In other business, the board accepted the $352,985 bid of Total Automation Concepts of Alsip for campus-wide security upgrades and the $554,700 bid of Vanguard Con-

tractors of Pekin for accessibility upgrades in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre.

The board also approved: • Seeking proposals for an information security audit.

• An intergovernmental agreement with Marseilles over its new downtown TIF. • Purchase of Palo Alto Firewall maintenance and support from Burwood Group for three years for $36,640. The firewall protects campus systems from cyber-attacks, intrusion and viruses.

• Tenure for faculty members Dan Serafini, mathematics, and Heather Seghi, dental assisting. The tenure process requires faculty demonstrate exemplary teaching, contributions to the college and community, and involvement with professional organizations.

Board members learned: • In his yearly student demographics report, Associate Vice President for Student Services Mark Grzybowski said the number of students receiving any type of financial aid climbed from 35 percent in fall 2016 to 48 percent in fall 2017. Grzybowski also said, “Despite credit hours tracking slightly behind 10th day fall 2016, headcount increased by 35 students from 3,209 to 3,241.”

• The theater department continued a tradition this semester by partnering with Horizon House to provide disability-awareness programs at area schools such as

Student-to-student scientific exchange IVCC hosts handson educational demonstrations

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com OGLESBY — Schools have embraced the academic movement toward the more scientific aspects of their curriculum. Beginning with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), many programs have also added art to the mix, creating STEAM. STEAM takes into account the creativity needed during the design process of many engineering and scientific challenges. To assist local schools in creating engaging lesson plans, the LaMoille School District partnered with IVCC on March 13 to host their second annual conference named STEA²M. “This is a learning day to educate both students and teachers with hands-on activities they can then take back to their schools for their own STEAM programs,” LaMoille High School junior Kyle Pinter said.

Pinter, along with 12 other LaMoille classmates, was one of the event’s student organizers.

More than 300 junior high and high school students from 20 area schools participated in the event that featured 67 creative demonstrations. Each student could choose two presentations to attend during the morning sessions and an additional two in the afternoon.

“Our kids have been fantastic, and I can’t speak highly enough of them.

We’ve had increased attendance this year, and everyone involved has done an outstanding job,” LaMoille Superintendent Ricardo Espinoza said of LaMoille’s student organizers.

Presentations were made by both educators and students on topics including fluids; drones; virtual reality; scientific method; plastic pollution in our oceans; problem solving; developing ideas; soil science; stop motion animation; robotics; agricultural science; solar energy; circuitry; alternative energy sources; and more.

“I love seeing these kids involved with this level of technology and realizing what they’re going to be capable of doing with it,” Sean Tiernan said. Tieman is a regional vice president with Matific, a K-through-

Many students reported their pleasure with being exposed to such a wide variety of creative and scientific projects in one location.

“It’s been a lot of fun getting to do things we wouldn’t normally get to do,” LaMoille sixth-grader Kaylee Scanland said as she played PacMan on a computer where the control circuitry was routed through mounds of Play-Doh. Depending on which colorful lump was touched, Pac-Man would move through his maze accordingly.

Volunteers from each school helped with the conference’s success and they were joined by additional volunteers from Community

Partners Against Substance Abuse (CPASA).

“This is a way for us to help our schools and communities and pay them back for all the help they regularly give us with our programs,” CPASA coordinator Dawn Conerton said.

Schools participating in the conference were Allen Junior High, LaMoille, Alwood Middle/High, Bureau Valley North and South, DePue, Hamlin Upper Grade Center, Holy Cross, JFK Elementary in Spring Valley, Lostant, Mendota, Neponset, Oglesby, Putnam County Junior High and High School, Ottawa, Parkside, St. Mary, Visitation Catholic, and Waltham. Students were also provided lunch and given a commemorative T-shirt.

“It takes time to develop a program, especially in a community that has never offered wrestling before,” said coach Jerry Kriewald. “We are beginning to see the results of our hard work at the junior high and high school levels. Connor has wrestled for five years at the junior high level and will be moving up to the high school level next year.”

HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District will sponsor children’s activities over spring break.

On Friday, March 30, there will be an Easter egg hunt on the lawn.

They will have plastic eggs that participants can collect. Each egg will have an Easter treat in them.

Ages 0-3 will hunt their eggs on the front lawn at 10 a.m. Ages 4 through first grade will hunt eggs on our north lawn at 10:30 a.m. and grades 2-5 will hunt eggs on our south lawn at 11 a.m. The Easter Bunny will be present to take pictures with.

On Monday, April 2, the movie “Coco” will be shown on the big screen TV. Popcorn and a beverage will be served. The movie starts at 11:30 a.m.

On Tuesday, April 3, Gerrie’s Craft Corner will be in the community room. Participants will make some fun spring crafts. Crafts start at noon and will be done at 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, April 4, “Fer-

dinand” will be shown on the big screen TV. Popcorn and a beverage will be served. The movie starts at 11:30 a.m.

On Thursday, April 5, there will be kid’s bingo in the community room. Participants will play bingo for prizes. Bingo starts at noon and will conclude at 1 p.m.

The cost of any of these activities is free for Hennepin and Hennepin Township and $5 for all other areas. Participants are invited to stay after each the activities for open swim at no additional charge with the exception of the Easter egg hunt. Children under 42 inches must be accompanied by an adult into the pool and children 11 or under may stay for 3 hours if not accompanied by an adult.

An adult is considered anyone 18 and over.

The criteria for the scholarship awards is based on the academic achievement and extracurricular/community service records of the applicants. Jonathan Byrd will perform Saturday at Princeton Coffeehouse PRINCETON — North Carolina singer-songwriter Jonathan Byrd will perform at the Princeton Coffeehouse at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24.

Touring as Jonathan Byrd & the Pickup Cowboy, Byrd (guitar and vocals) will be accompanied by Johnny Waken (guitar and mandolin) and Kyshona Armstrong (bassist). Byrd draws in audiences in with a wide range of songs, from heartbreaking ballads to heart-lifting sing-alongs.

He has been called “a folk singer with the heart of a rock ‘n’ roll band” (K. Oliver in Free Times).

Between musical tours, Byrd can frequently be heard back home in North Carolina performing old-time music at The Kraken, a Chapel Hill bar located in a 1973 roadhouse venue. He also hosts a weekly residency series there, inviting performers from around the country to share their music.

In his songwriting, Byrd is known for literary, outsider songs that have become campfire favorites. A preacher’s son and a Gulf War veteran, he is also a poet. “You’ve Changed” is the

title of his new book of poetry.

PCES students vote for their favorite Bluestem Book HENNEPIN — The fourth- and fifth-grade students participating in the Bluestem Book Award Program sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) voted for their favorite book on March 8.

This is the eighth year for the Bluestem Award book program at Putnam County Elementary School in Hennepin. Students who read at least four of the 20 books on the list were eligible to vote for their favorite book. Students also had to pass the Accelerated Reader Quiz and complete a worksheet on the book.

Forty-nine students were eligible to vote. Students and staff enjoyed cookies, juice and ice cream with toppings.

STREATOR — Community Players of Streator Inc., better known as Engle Lane Theatre, will conduct open auditions for its summer musical, “The Producers,” starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 24, and Sunday, March 25, at the theatre.

With a truly hysterical book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, and music and lyrics by Mr. Brooks, “The Producers” won 12 Tony awards on Broadway.

Auditions will take the form of singing, dancing and reading from the script. Director Kathy Hepner will be casting five male roles, one female roles and a large ensemble cast. Show dates are July 8-14.

ORD. #18-01 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING REGULATION OF DELINGQUENT ACCOUNTS FOR THE HENNEPIN PUBLIC WATER DIST., PUTNAM CO., IL Recitals A. Pursuant to Section 23 of the Public Water District Act, the Board of Trustees of the Hennepin Public Water District (the “District”) is authorized to adopt regulations governing the District's operations.

B. Ordinance No. 6-1 passed in July 2004 adopted regulations governing the District's operations.

The Board of Trustees desires to amend Section 1-15 of Ordinance No. 6-1 which concerns the discontinuation of service to users due to delinquent accounts.

BE IT ORDAINED by the District's Trustees as follows herein.

1. The recitals set forth above are true and correct and incorporated into this Ordinance.

2. Section 1-15 of Ord. No. 6-1 is amended to add the following regulations. (e) Monthly payments for water service are due on or before the 1st day of each month. If any charges are not paid on or before the 1st day of the month, such unpaid charges shall be subject to a service charge of 1.5% per month, 18% per annum. In determining whether a bill is past due, the District may rely on the postmark of the payment, in which case, the payment shall be considered past due if the payment is postmarked after the 1st day of the month. (f) The District can discontinue service only after it has mailed or posted on the property associated with the delinquent account written notice of discontinued. Any notice required to be delivered or mailed to a customer prior to discontinuance of service shall be delivered or mailed separately from any bill. Service shall not be discontinues until at least five days after posting or eight days after mailing of this notice. (g) Before disconnecting service, the District's employee or agent making the disconnection will attempt to contact the customer at the time service is being disconnected. (h) Service disconnections will be made between the hours of 8:00a.m. And 12:00p.m. On weekdays. Disconnections will not be made on weekends or holidays. (i) Residential customers who are indebted to the District may make arrangements with the District to retire the debt by periodic payments referred to hereinafter as a deferred payment agreement unless the customers has failed to make payment under such a plan during the past twelve months. Deferred payment agreements shall: (1) Be in writing (2) Require 25% of the overdue balance to be paid upon entering into the agreement; (3) Provide payment plans allowing a minimum of two months from the date of said agreement and a maximum of six months; and (4) Permit disconnection of service without notice the first business day after a required payment is missed.

The President of the District Board of Trustees is authorized to enter into a deferred payment agreement in accordance with the terms of this paragraph.

3. The District Clerk is directed to publish this Ordinance within 30 days after its adoption in a newspaper published in the District (if no such newspaper, then in a newspaper with a general circulation in the District).

4. All other District ordinances, resolutions and regulations which are inconsistent with this Ordinance are superseded by this Ordinance.

BY DAVE COOK Shaw Media PRINCETON — What began as a simple idea for a fundraiser has evolved over seven years into one of Princeton’s signature annual events — the Z-Tour.

Benefiting the Zearing Child Enrichment Center, a local, not-for-profit early childhood education center, the Z-Tour

promotes bicycling as a safe, family-oriented recreational activity, as well as the many attractions of the city and its outlying areas.

Last year’s 770 riders raised $32,000 as they pedaled their way along the different routes of varying mileage.

The 2018 tour, scheduled for July 21 will feature loops of 10, 30, 50, 75 and 100 miles with enjoyable summer scenery and a variety of challenging

environments depending on the route chosen. Each is well-marked and monitored and includes rest and hydration stops.

One of the many organizers who is also a cyclist, Princeton resident Brian Church, was asked to share advice encouraging those considering the tour for the first time.

“I’ve greatly increased my level of cycling enthusiasm in the last six years and now try to ride at least 3,000 miles annually. My bicycle has taken me to places you just can’t experience while sitting in an automobile, and I hope to be able to ride another 20 years,” Church said.

He added that cycling has numerous benefits and that he hasn’t been able to easily replicate either the physical or psychological benefits he’s experienced while riding.

“The Z-Tour Bike Ride offers everyone an opportunity to enjoy these benefits with hundreds of other riders who feel the same way, and there are good route options for all levels of riders,” he said.

Church said the main reason why a first-timer should ride the Z-Tour is that it’s fun, whether you ride alone or within a group.

“The ride is also well-supported with countless volunteers, and the proceeds generated from the event stay local by supporting the Zearing Child Enrichment Center,” he added.

“Secondly, don’t be reluctant to ask questions to a more experienced rider. Typically, veteran cyclists are more than willing to assist and educate those new to the sport,” he said.

For riders with some experience, but perhaps who haven’t yet ridden in an organized event or tackled significantly longer mileages, confidence is, once again, the biggest key to success.

“Have the confidence to challenge yourself and ride a longer route than in the past. With proper training, one will find themselves riding a distance that was at one time hard to conceive,” Church said.

Once your confidence is in place, other things new riders will want to make sure they’ve addressed is having a helmet, sunscreen, water bottles, a cellphone and personal identification.

“There will be support on site to fill the bottles and offer nutritional snacks. We can also air tires before you start. All that’s really needed from there is to ride safely and follow traffic laws,” Church said.

Explaining the ‘Explanation of Benefits’ Some of the info that appears on EOBs and what it all means

E

very time your doctor sends a medical claim to a medical insurance company or care management organization, you will receive an Explanation of Benefits – usually referred to as an EOB or EOB form. (The exception may be some prescriptions).

Despite having “explanation” in its name, an EOB quite often confuses rather than explains anything.

However, it is important that you review each EOB you receive because neither insurance companies nor health care providers are perfect, and any errors can cost you down the line.

Here is some of the information that should appear on your EOB and what it means.

1) The date you saw your health care provider. People don’t like to think about it, but health care fraud is a reality. If you receive an EOB for a date of service you don’t recall, you should contact your provider or insurance company right away. This may be a simple clerical error, or you may have been the

“Contact your local bike shop, which is Bike Works in Peru, and schedule an appointment. They serve the entire biking community, so they tend to get very busy just before the ride, and they’re also a good source of information,” he said.

Hopkins 3) A description of the services provided. This may be the most important detail on the EOB. If you feel the service billed does not match what was actually done, you should follow up first with your provider and then your insurance company.

An incorrect description can cause all manner of grief. Insurance companies match to the diagnosis on the claim form. If the service provided is not considered appropriate for the diagnosis, the claim may be denied.

Another problem is that many insurance policies limit certain services, such as chiropractic visits or mental health treatment. If the wrong service is billed, you could exhaust your benefits without realizing it.

4) The fee that your health care provider charged the insurance company. If your provider is “in network,” they have a contracted rate with your insurance company.

The provider can list whatever charge they want, but the insurance company will cover only the negotiated rate. You are not respon-

If your provider is “out of network,” then there is no contracted rate, and you are responsible for whatever your insurance doesn’t cover. That means it is always important to check with your insurance company about your health care provider’s network status.

5) What you owe. This usually refers to a deductible – the amount you pay per year before your insurance kicks in – or a copay – the percentage of each charge that your plan says you must pay.

This is where many people get confused and sometimes upset, especially if they have already paid the provider. An EOB is not a bill.

In fact, “This Is Not A Bill” is usually printed on the form.

Despite this, there is usually a section that reads “You Owe This Amount” or some variation.

Remember that the EOB does not list what you may already have paid your provider.

6) A “reason” code. If your claim was denied, in part or in full, this

code tells you why. The service may not be covered under your plan or may have been deemed not medically necessary, or you may have reached your annual plan limits.

You should keep all EOBs for the duration of your plan year. Find a safe place to store them. When you do decide to dispose of them, they should be treated just like bank or credit card statements, and shredded.

Many insurance companies offer the option of paperless EOBs that you can receive by email for an added layer of protection.

And be sure to contact your insurance company’s customer service department with any questions or concerns.

Healthy fresh fruits, veggies from farmers’ market distributed

BY GOLDIE RAPP Shaw Media PRINCETON — Fresh fruits and vegetables should be enjoyed by everyone, no matter what their economic status may be.

This is the belief at the Bureau County Food Pantry. And through its newest program, the pantry has been able to provide fresh produce to clients unable to afford the items at the grocery store.

The Refresh Food Program has been a hit, according to food pantry director Vanessa Hoffeditz.

Supporters of the food pantry are able to make donations specifically for the program. Fresh produce is then purchased at the Farmers’ Market in Princeton and given away to clients on a weekly basis.

Hoffeditz said last year, clients

were able to enjoy fresh produce from the spring to winter months, because of the program’s success.

“O u r c u s t o m e r s greatly appreciated Vanessa this program,” she Hoffeditz said.

“It’s really a win-win arrangement.”

Not only did the program provide produce to clients, but it also supported local growers at the farmers’ market, too.

Clients were able to enjoy produce beyond the everyday lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Hoffeditz said they got to take home items such as kale, eggplants, squash, garlic, sweet potatoes, raspberries and more.

But the food pantry didn’t just box up the produce and send it on its way without giving clients a chance to learn how to prepare it in healthy meals at home.

“We want people to understand that no produce goes to waste.

We’re educating people to find ways to use every bit of it,” Hoffeditz said.

Through a partnership with the University of Illinois Extension, the food pantry is able to bring in instructors who put on cooking lessons twice a month for clients.

The instructors show how to incorporate seasonal produce into everyday meals to boost its nutritional means.

“A lot of times, we give away pre-packaged types of food to our customers. It’s not always the healthiest, but it’s quick and easy for our families. By providing the cooking classes, we’re increasing education on how to use the produce and showing them how quick and easy healthy meals can be prepared,” Hoffeditz said.

With the 2018 growing season quickly approaching, Hoffeditz is hoping to work with the growers of the farmers’ market once again, and is looking to increase donations to use specifically for the Refresh Food Program.

Aside from the program, the food pantry welcomes produce donations from Master Gardeners, local farmers and “green thumbers” who may have an overabundance and are willing to donate it for clients.
