An early morning run

About 60 people participated in the early morning marathon relay held Saturday near Putnam County Junior High School in McNabb. Eleven teams of five, a couple’s team and several individuals took part in the Starved Rock Runners’ 26.2 x 5 Team Marathon event that covered a 5.24-mile loop. Ryan Bell, 45, set the quickest pace with a 6.4-minute mile average and an overall time of 33.5 minutes. BY DAVE COOK HENNEPIN — Longtime Putnam County Circuit Court Clerk Cathy Oliveri’s last day in office will be April 30.

Filling the seat that Oliveri held for the past 27 years will be her chief deputy clerk, Granville resident Carly Neubaum, as approved by the county board last week.

“It’s bittersweet, but I’m proud to have served the people of Putnam County, and I’ve appreciated their support over these many years,” Oliveri said after the March 11 Putnam County Board meeting.

Oliveri’s term ends in 2020, and Neubaum said she’s planning to run for the seat in next year’s election.

At the board’s February meeting, Oliveri recommended Neubaum to fill her position until that time, and Putnam County Democratic Central Committee Chairman Eric Balma endorsed the appointment. The board unanimously supported Neubaum’s advancement.

“Do you think you’re qualified?” board member Willie Holmes asked Neubaum, to which she replied, “I think so.”

“I know so,” Oliveri added.

To ease the transition and to better facilitate the changes in the office, Oliveri had advised the board that the sooner they could approve Neubaum’s advancement, the better it would be.

Neubaum said she’s enjoyed her work in the circuit clerk’s office because it’s challenging and that each day is different.

Interfund loan After the board’s approval of a March 4 resolution to allow an “as needed” interfund loan of up to $330,000 from the Federal Aid Matching Fund, Treasurer Kevin Kunkel reported that he expected the county will need to borrow by the end of April.

“Which is roughly $130,000 less than the month before,” he said.

Putnam County Board Chairman Steve Malavolti previously said this is basically what was done last year in order to help the county meet its expenses until tax revenue was received. At that time, the interfund loan was repaid.

County highways Engineer Pat Sloan reported that the county’s road projects are out for bid and that work was being done to prepare the site of the upcoming Bottom Road Bridge project. He said the work was complicated because of the large of amount of utilities in the area, but that it was proceeding as scheduled.

Sloan also said there will be an electronics recycling event on Friday, April 26, the week of Earth Day, from noon to 5 p.m. in Toluca.

Emergency Management Emergency Management Coordinator Chauntelle Biagi-Bruer had her request for a new $6,280 identification card system approved by the board.

She said the current system is roughly 12 years old and problematic. The new system will include a printer, software, installation, support and training, but will also require a new laptop computer.

The board approved of Biagi-Bruer locking in the quoted price before it expired at the end of the month.

However, they requested the actual purchase of the system and laptop be delayed.

This is because of both the county’s current financial situation and the need to update several outdated components of the county’s computer systems following Microsoft’s announcement regarding the obsolescence of Windows 7.

Students challenged to think outside the box IVCC hosts third STEAM Conference

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com OGLESBY — Hundreds of students and staff from schools across the Illinois Valley gathered March 12 at IVCC to participate in the third annual STEA²M Conference presented through the efforts of the LaMoille School District.

Featuring many presentations in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, art, agriculture and math (STEA²M), both students and educators were given the opportunity to explore their interests throughout the day.

“The elements of STEA²M have become so important to the future of our students. We hope what they’re exposed to today will inspire them towards a future and career they’re both interested in and enjoy,” LaM­oille teacher Carol Darveau said.

“This conference has also been of tremendous help to my students because it’s taught them how to work together to successfully organize a complicated event,” she added.

Participating in the campuswide event were attendees from Hall, Lostant, LaMoille, DePue, Putnam County, Oglesby, Waltham, Bureau Valley, JFK, Holy Cross, Princeton, Neponset and St. Mary’s schools.

The morning’s keynote speaker was Jason Marquis of Marquis Energy. He shared his family’s history in the area, guided the students through a series of challenging puz-

zles, and gave them advice on what’s needed to be successful.

“Having a growth mindset and knowing how to learn is important, and resilience is a key factor,” he said.

Following the presentation and mental exercises in the IVCC gymnasium, the students split up and selected a variety of different concurrent presentations to attend

throughout the campus.

Some of the topics featured included physics, photography, scientific method, the Civil Air Patrol, zoology, problem solving, wellness and fitness, mathematic design, crime scene investigation, community planning, computer design, environmental science, coding, video editing and more.

Schools also often take what they’ve seen at the STEA²M Conference and return home to use it in their curriculum.

“This is my first time here, but this is a great opportunity for our students to participate in hands-on presentations and explore different areas of science and technology,” JFK teacher Julia Toller said.

“I enjoy how our students can explore hands-on activities, and it helps them think outside of the box,” Lostant teacher Tricia Haynes said.

Jay McCracken, interim superintendent for LaMoille and the former superintendent for Putnam County and Hall High School, said education has had to adapt in order to provide more direct pathways for students, particularly those not bound for college.

“We believe STEA²M education is immensely important for our young people, and this conference wonderfully compliments our Career Start program that’s intended to equip our students with the skills they need to successfully enter into a well-paid career,” he said.

Outreach worker reaching out to community She plans to tour county to introduce herself and services

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com STANDARD — As the weather begins to warm, Putnam County residents may receive a friendly visit from the Putnam County Community Center’s outreach worker who will explain the many services the center can provide.

Granville resident Janice Holst recently announced she’ll soon begin canvassing communities door-to-door as the weather improves in order to introduce herself and provide information about available assistance and services.

According to Michelle Slutz, director of the Putnam County Community Center, outreach is a one-on-one visit usually done in the home.

Potential clients, or their caregivers, are identified and encouraged to use existing services and benefits.

If residents aren’t 60 years of age or older, Holst will have a short conversation to describe what the center does for the community.

Some of the things the outreach worker does for those 60 and older include: • Canvassing door-to-door to seek out and identify hard-to-reach aging individuals for informa-

• Informing persons, or caregivers, of available benefits and services.

• Encouraging the aging population to participate in senior programs offered by the center.

• Assisting the aging population in gaining access to needed services.

• Conducting follow-up activities/phone calls to determine whether services have been received and needs have been met following referrals.

• Providing client advocacy to secure needed benefits.

• Providing community presentations that link

IN BRIEF Special Olympics fundraiser Thursday at Grandma Rosie’s SPRING VALLEY — Local celebrity athlete Blake Baker will appear at Grandma Rosie’s Sweet Treats in Spring Valley from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, to sign autographs.

He officiates state title game before hanging up whistle

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS news@putnamcountyrecord.com PUTNAM — Love them or hate them, officials like Tim Snowden are as important to the game of basketball as the ball itself. Without them, there are no games.

Snowden, 58, of Putnam, is hanging up his whistle after 35 years in stripes around northern Illinois. He got to work his last game Saturday, March 9, as few official get to do — officiate the 1A boys state championship game in Peoria.

“That’s exactly the way I wanted to go out, on top. Who could ask for more than that?” said Snowden, who also worked the state finals in 2015.

“It truly was an honor to get back down there on that floor.”

Snowden had a hard time keeping his emotions in check as he walked onto the Carver Arena floor to call

the game won by Chicago Orr over Nashville.

“That’s (35 years) a long time, man.

It’s been part of my life and to finally get to that pinnacle was great,” he said.

Snowden said it was good to be able to make amends of a call his crew made at state in 2015 when a team switched shooters for a free throw on a shot at the buzzer before halftime and went undetected.

“In our confusion if they got the shot off in time or not, the kids switched shooters and put the wrong kid at the line and the place went nuts, because everybody knew but us,” he said. “They replayed it (on the video board), but we are not allowed to watch replay in high school ball. So even though it was going on up above and we could have fixed it, we couldn’t.”

Over halftime, the crew checked their rule book and determined it was a correctable error they could make to start the second half. They took the points off the board and put the right player on the free throw line, then put the ball in play to start the third quarter.

“That left a bad taste in my mouth.

I felt like I did a horrible job in 2015, and to able to come back and rectify that and be able to get the championship in 1A, it’s unbelievable,” Snowden said.

Snowden learned of this year’s state assignment as he prepared to walk onto the floor for Bureau Valley’s 2A sectional semifinal at Riverdale.

“The wife of the guy I was working with (Dave Gilliland of Stockton) called and said the state assignments were out, so we got on our phones before we walked onto the floor and saw we were going,” Snowden said.

He was originally scheduled to work the 2A super-sectional at DeKalb with his pal Dave Shepard of Wyanet. When Bureau Valley, Shepard’s hometown team, punched their ticket to DeKalb, they were reassigned the 1A game to avoid any conflict of interest.

While he might fill in “here and there,” Snowden said he’s done full time and hanging up his whistle.

While his heart may still be there, his body is telling him otherwise.

• REFEREE Continued from Page 9 “I’m not taking any games. I gave up my partners,” he said. “My hips and knees are starting to hurt, so it’s time for me to hang it up. Thirty-five years was a great run.”

It’s time for a younger generation to take over, because many of the officials Snowden’s age are looking to get out. He encourages anyone interested in it to give it a try.

“We lose so many of them, because we’re getting so old,” he said. “The kids stay the same age and we just get a year older each time and a step slower and slower. That’s the nature of the beast. You get older and can’t keep up anymore.”

Though most would not even notice, Snowden said the state area floor is 10 feet longer than the normal high school floor and can wear on the older referees.

“It doesn’t seem like much, but it is,” he said. “We had Friday night’s game at 8 and had the second game Saturday morning. I’m telling you, my kegs were hurting. I was pooped and ready for that tournament to be done. But I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world. It’s just an honor to be on that floor.”

Snowden won’t miss the cold cars and long trips on bad roads on winter nights, but he will miss the

guys he’s worked with.

“I’m going to miss that Friday night and picking up Kenny and teasing him all the way there and all the way home,” he said of his longtime partner, Kenny Wilcoxen. “The camaraderie among officials and seeing guys at tournaments, I just loved that. At the state tournament, we’d get together, and talk about the good old days and stories and stuff people had done. It’s a just great time, great guys.”

Snowden said it’s “truly a brotherhood” among officials.

“If we don’t stand up for us, who’s going to? When you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us,” he said.

Snowden, who can often be seen chatting with someone in the crowd at high school games, said he loved every part of the job, even the rowdy fans.

“I don’t mind that at all. Shucks, I don’t hear real good, so most of the times, I didn’t hear what they were saying anyway. I’d just laugh at them,” he said. “I never really had too much trouble.”

Snowden was just 23 when he started officiating and admittedly says he was terrible.

“I don’t mind to tell you, I didn’t know what I was doing, but I had guys like Randy Rimington and Kenny who helped you along the way,” he said. “You have bad games, and you have good games, they help you along. You have great times doing it. You make friendships for life.”

Madelyn Dzierzynski, Megan Wiesbrock and Kaleb Wright of Putnam County were among area seniors selected by area media and coaches.

Other area girls include Kelly VanDenBussche of Princeton, Janessa Hart and Gabby Engle-

haupt of Hall, Saige Barnett and Emily Fordham of Bureau Valley, and Maggie Sons and Naomi Ochuba of St. Bede.

The boys game will also include the talents of Koel Hjerstedt of Princeton, Jimmy DeAngelo of Hall, Kale Barnett and Tyler Gustafson of Bureau Valley, Brady Becker of LaMoille-Ohio and Marcus Winfert of DePue. The girls game will tip off at 6 p.m., with the boys slated for 7:30 p.m. There will be a coed 3-point shooting contest between games.

Putnam County Junior High School volleyball team members wore shirts in honor of their 18 acts of kindness they performed to honor a volleyball player from Downers Grove North who was killed by an intoxicated driver in February.

Beth Dunlap was a vibrant, talented, 17-year-old volleyball player whose team had just competed at state the previous season. In her honor, the family asked that people perform random acts of kindness.

The girls of Putnam County Junior High embraced the challenge when asked to participate by eighthgrade coach Shannon Jenkins. The girls completed their celebration of her life last week. Among the acts of kindness, they handed out sweets, purchased coffee for high school students, handed out hair ties and cookies at the regional competition, wrote letters to teachers and fellow classmates honoring them for their wonderful qualities, wrote letters of thanks to parents for their support, gave flowers and treats to the staff at their school, and wrote special notes to those who demonstrate kindness throughout their day.

HENRY — The Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR “traveled along” with program presenter and volunteer Honor Flight guardian, Barbara Peterson of Wyanet, on her Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C., as she shared the itinerary with members at their March 2 meeting.

Peterson served as guardian for two World War II veterans, one in a wheelchair, as they departed from the Moline airport and later toured locations in the nation’s capital. In addition to visits to the World War II, Air Force, Korean War monuments and the Women’s Museum, the group visited the Air and Space Museum and Arlington National Cemetery, where they laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Large numbers of well-wishers, such as service personnel, musical groups, Boy Scouts, friends, relatives and DAR members, met the travelers when departing and arriving at both Moline and Dulles airports.

The March 2 meeting was called to order by Vice Regent Dolores Dace at the Meeting Place in Henry.

The ritual, pledge to the flag of the United States of America and the preamble to the U.S. Constitution followed.

Reports were given by chairmen of DAR committees as follow: American Indians, U.S. Constitution, Flag of the United States of America, DAR Good Citizens, DAR Magazine, DAR School and Public Relations.

Chapter officers for 2019-2021 were nominated and voted upon.

Serving will be Dolores Dace, regent; Diane Zimmerman, vice regent; Diana Williamson, chaplain; Nancy Gillfillan, recording secretary; Carrie Schwiderski, corresponding secretary, Wendy Welch, treasurer; Sharon Bittner, registrar; and Florence Finfgeld, historian/librarian.

The rededication of the grave marker for DAR Real Daughter Clarissa McManners at the Henry Cemetery and an application for an Historic Preservation Recognition Award have been approved at National Headquarters.

A successful service project of donating 2019 calendars to two nursing homes was reported by Chairman Diane Zimmerman.

Attendance is encouraged for the District II meeting in DeKalb on March 23 and state conference on April 26-28 in Bloomington.

The next meeting will be Friday, April 5, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Henry. Good Citizens student honorees from Henry-Senachwine, Midland and Putnam County high schools will be honored. Parents and some school personnel will also attend. The program by Rockford resident Alice Uphouse, who will trace the inception of the Illinois state flag, then its selection in a contest, and development to its current form.

Sixth-grade students participate in Rebecca Caudill Award program

MCNABB — Putnam County Junior High School sixth-grade students recently participated in the Rebecca Caudill Young Reader’s Award program. This Illinois award is determined by student votes. It encourages students to read for personal satisfaction and develops a statewide awareness of outstanding children’s literature.

The books “Booked” and “Lily and Dunkin” were chosen as the favorites out of the 20 nominated books.

This program was introduced to the students through a cooperative effort and special thanks were given to the Putnam County Educational Foundation for approving the grant that helped pay for copies of the books and the treats for the party. This year an Association of Illinois School Library Education grant was awarded to PCJH, and they received a copy of each Rebecca Caudill book.

Students were asked to nominate a state farm animal using the criteria that it be an important farm animal raised in Illinois. One young lady wrote, “I think a cow should be the Illinois state farm animal because it makes milk and milk is good for you.”

Another suggestion was “a turkey, because we have a holiday for it.”

Students were given four varieties and colors of popcorn to sort before taste testing. They all agreed popcorn was the best choice for this Illinois symbol.

Agriculture open house at IVCC

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will host its agriculture spring open house for all prospective students and parents from 8:45 a.m. to noon Friday, April 5, in Rooms CTC124-125.

Guests will interact with current students and faculty, hear an overview on the revitalized program, tour campus and participate in an activity in the ag lab. Enrollment, financial aid and scholarship infor-

mation will be provided.

In two years, the program led by instructor Willard Mott has grown to more than 25 students taking at least one ag course, 10 new classes, two new ag degrees and five parttime instructors.

Students are asked to preregister online by Friday, March 29, at ivcc.edu/agriculture or by contacting Mott at 815-224-0413 or willard_ mott@ivcc.edu.

March 27 — Chicken salad with wheat bread, cooked carrots, macaroni salad, pea salad, fruit salad.

March 28 — Cheeseburger on bun, tater tots, green beans, yogurt with fruit, dessert.

March 29 — Breaded fish with tarter sauce, tater tots, broccoli, sliced pears, wheat bread.

Bread, butter, fruit juice and 2% milk are available with meals. For reservations, call 800-757-4579, 24 hours in advance of the day’s meal. The menu is subject to change. Meals are available to senior citizens 60 plus at no cost, but donations are appreciated.

The meal program is partly funded by donations, so they have a suggested donation of $5 per meal. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.

HENNEPIN — Every second grader at Putnam County Primary School (PCPS) is familiar with the delicious snack of popcorn. What they didn’t know was about 18 years ago, some other second- and thirdgrade students from a Joliet elementary school were working on a project to make it Illinois’ state snack.

First, it had to go through the legal process before the General Assembly made it official in 2003. As part of this Marshall-Putnam University of Illinois Extension Ag in the Classroom program, students heard how this snack was enjoyed by Native Americans long before Columbus discovered America.

Native Americans not only ate it but used it to make ceremonial decorations. They had a legend as to why popcorn popped, but the students identified that as not true. The scientific explanation is there’s mois-

Cast announced for Stage 212’s production of ‘Next to Normal’ LASALLE — Stage 212 will present an unflinching look, set to a power rock score, at a suburban family struggling with the effects of mental illness in their spring 2019 production of “Next to Normal,” the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning musical by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt.

Dad’s an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens. They appear to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling bipolar disorder for 16 years. “Next to Normal” takes the audience inside the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with humor, sympathy and, above all else, love.

Featured in the cast are Brittany Ralph as Diana, Jeff Sudakov as Dan, Sarah Hunter as Natalie, Kevin Alleman as Gabe, Elijah Lind as Henry and Bob Phillip as Dr. Fine/Dr. Madden.

Members of the ensemble are Yvette Lucas, Caryn Brown, Makayla Heller and Adrienne Van Horn.

Production staff includes director Dave Roden, vocal director Mary Kieffer, co-producer/costumer/prop coordinator Zoë Peshel, co-producer Larry Kelsey, assistant director Joe Peshel, master builder John Fanning, lighting designer Yvette Lucas and light operator Brian Brown.

“Next to Normal” will be presented April 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13 (two performances) and 14 at Stage 212, 700 First St., LaSalle. Thursday, Friday and

Saturday evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m.

Tickets will be available to the general public for $20 each beginning Monday, March 25, and may be purchased by visiting the box office from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, or by calling 815-224-3025 during the same hours.

“Next to Normal” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. Because it contains adult themes and language, “Next to Normal” is recommended for mature audiences.
