A preview of contested races in the upcoming Primary Election

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — The 2018 General Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20, and Putnam County voters will have many decisions to make. The following are the contested races on both the Democratic and Republican ballots.

Democrats have six candidates for governor to choose from. They are (in the order they appear on the ballot) J.B. Pritzker, Chris Kennedy, Daniel Biss, Bob Daiber, Tio Hardiman and Robert Marshall.

Republicans will have to make their choice between incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner and Jeanne Ives.

The office of attorney general is another race where Democrats will have a larger candidate field. Candidates are former Gov. Pat Quinn, Renato Mariotti, Scott Drury, Nancy Rotering, Kwame Raoul, Jesse Ruiz, Sharon Fairley and Aaron Goldstein.

The Republican candidates for attorney general are Erika Harold and Gary Grasso.

The Democratic candidates for the 16th Congressional District are Neill Mohammad, Sara Dady, Beth Vercolio-Osmund and Amy “Murri” Briel.

The 16th Congressional District Republican candidates are incumbent U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger and James T. “Jim” Marter.

Polling places

According to the Putnam County website, early voting will be conducted at the office of the Putnam

County Clerk in the courthouse at 120 N. Fourth St. in Hennepin.

Early voting began Feb. 8 and will continue through March 19 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and also on Saturday, March 17, from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Any voter who is a valid registrant in Putnam County may vote during the early voting period after showing proper identification. However, any vote cast is final and may not be revoked.

As a result, an early voter isn’t eligible to cast a vote on Election Day. The following is a list of the county’s polling places: Granville 1 will be at the Standard Fire Station; Granville 2 and 4 are at the American Legion Hall in Granville; Granville 3 is in the Mark Community Building; Magnolia 1 will be at the Magnolia Fire Station; Magnolia 2 is located at the McNabb Fire Station; Hennepin’s polling place will be located in the Park District Complex in Hennepin; and the Senachwine polling place will be in the Putnam Town Hall in Putnam.

Locations are subject to change as necessity requires.

Polls will open at 6 a.m. on March 20 and will remain open until 7 p.m.

GRANVILLE — Fans of longtime WGN farm broadcaster Max Armstrong will want to be sure to get their ticket for the PC Rotary’s upcoming Ag Night on March 29.

For more than 30 years, Armstrong was WGN’s voice for the ag industry and is now the host of the popular syndicated programs “Farm Progress America” and “Max Max Armstrong’s Midwest Armstrong Digest.” Through these programs, his voice and experience are broadcast daily from more than 100 radio stations across the Midwest.

“It’s taken us five years to final-

ly be able to host Max, and we’re extremely proud to be able to announce this event,” Brenda Bickerman, Rotarian and event organizer, said.

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — After previous inspections of the village’s water treatment plant, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has suggested Granville install a backup generator for its well.

However, the suggestions have now become firmer, and the village will begin facing fines if action isn’t taken before the next inspection.

“It’s something the Jared Baker IEPA found on their Granville walk, and they strongvillage ly suggested we get president one. The last bid we had was just shy of $80,000,” Village President Jared Baker said at the March 6 village board meeting.

“It was more than a suggestion.

This is the second time it’s been noted and have been told we have to get it. The next time, there will be a fine,” Tracie Haage, village secretary, said, referring to the inspection done two years ago.

Board member Jim Pettit advised that the village wait until the next budget year before taking action.

“We’re going to need to put out a bid notice,” Baker said. “This is a big purchase.”

Siegmann said there were likely to be other suggestions included in the yet-to-be-received assessment letter from the IEPA’s recent inspection.

“They were asking about our water lines, too, and why we weren’t improving our infrastructure because I think we were warned before about that, too,” Siegmann said.

He said many of the village’s water lines run to a dead end, are undersized, or are simply very old.

He also added the current fourinch water lines in place are no longer compliant and that they’d need be replaced with six-inch lines.

“The last line we replaced was in 2005, 13 years ago,” he said.

McCoy Street project It was reported an improvement could likely be made to the village’s drainage system along McCoy Street at no additional cost while the more than $700,000 street improvement project was underway this summer.

Siegmann said he’d spoken with village engineer Mike Richetta, of Chamlin and Associates, about connecting a line to the catch basin at the southeast corner of Harrison and McCoy streets.

engineered to eliminate the step and improve drainage. Baker said the various curbside steps along McCoy Street were originally put in place because of water drainage issues.

“The engineers didn’t have computer simulations they could run back then, so it was easier to put in steps,” Baker said.

The steps are one of the major challenges of the McCoy Street project as the village addresses accessibility at the corners and crosswalks.

In other board news

• The board approved the construction engineering agreement for the improvements at the water treatment plant that will include repairs and upgrades to various pipes, fittings, valves and controls.

• The village board was invited to a chicken dinner at the Cedar Point Fire Station in gratitude of the help Granville provided Cedar Point during their recent well problems. Multiple area towns have assisted Cedar Point by providing them water, and Cedar Point continues to be under a boil order.

• The board informally agreed to not take vacations during the first week in August.

“This is the week of our biggest annual event, the Cruise Night, so I think we should all make the effort to be here for it,” Baker said.

• The Veterans Park playground equipment has been dismantled in preparation for the new equipment’s installation.

• Granville will be one of the 15 towns participating in the first Illinois River Valley Sales Ride during May 19 and 20. This yard sale/craft event is for communities along the Illinois River from Seneca to Mossville and will run along U.S. Route 6 and state Routes 71 and 26. Hennepin is also scheduled to participate.

GRANVILLE CEMETERY SPRING CLEAN-UP Granville Cemetery requests removal of all grave blankets and all other decorations except sheperd’s hooks and baskets that are RIGHT NEXT to or ON the monuments by April 1st. All shepherd’s hooks that are badly bent or rusted also need to be removed. No glass vases, jars or breakable containers should ever be placed in the cemetery. If you are in doubt about an item, please remove it.

IVCC’s 13th annual Edible Car Contest crosses the finish line to success

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com OGLESBY — Many things can be considered while wandering the aisles to select what will go in the grocery cart, but speed and structural integrity aren’t likely to be among them.

However, these characteristics were obviously on the minds of the competitors at IVCC’s 13th annual Edible Car Contest that was held in the school’s cafeteria.

The contest’s reputation for fun and humorous unpredictability helped pack the cafeteria to capacity and fill it with laughter and applause.

Faculty members, Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) students and area high schools brought 36 highly creative entries to compete in a variety of categories including speed, design, creativity, detail, best crash, most likely to survive a zombie apocalypse, meatiness, most healthy, most delicious and best wheel-man.

“This is our biggest field of entrants yet, and it gets better every year,” CAD instructor and emcee Dorene Data said.

The contest is held in celebration of National Engineering Week, with Data saying, “Everything you own started with an idea from an engineer.”

LaMoille High School’s Thomas Molln unfortunately had another disappointing day at the track as his salami and cheese racer failed to launch at the starting line. Last year’s entry crossed the finish line after a long, slow, sideways slide down the track, but it did so to a cafeteria full of cheering spectators and fellow racers. IVCC’s Edible Car Contest has provided some of the most fun, creative and entertaining educational events in the area for 13 years.

(STEM) activities at area schools, it was surprising there weren’t more teams entered from area high schools.

However, students from DePue, St. Bede, Hall, LaMoille and Streator fielded multiple cars and took home

several awards.

“I like how much it makes you think as the team works to get everything to hold together,” DePue junior Diego Madrigal said before the races began. His team took home seven medals.

“It’s a great team-building exercise, and I enjoy the trial and error,” IVCC sophomore Michelle Lakan said. Lakan successfully raced a high-speed Rice Krispies car down

the track.

The contest was created through an award from a National Science Foundation Grant and receives additional support from IVCC’s Workforce Development Division.

It’s also been nominated four times for a Bellwether Award, which is given to unique community college programs.

Prior to the next year’s competition, his students will re-engineer it, often with adjustments, substitutions and improvements.

Keeping with the sense of humor of the entries, the track measures speed in “mouthfuls per second.”

While many cars were wildly individual, there were some noticeable trends in this year’s field that were also quite different from last year’s racers. Common items and methods spotted were frozen ingredients; sausage bodies; cookies for wheels; pretzel stick axles; and peep and gummy bear drivers.

A common challenge faced by the culinary engineering teams included maintaining structural integrity across the finish line. At the other end of that spectrum were the cars that didn’t move at all.

Unfortunately for LaMoille’s Thomas Molln and Will Flanatan, this was the second year their entry was stubborn at the starting line.

Last year’s car likely set a record

for the longest time as it slowly slid sideways down the track before falling over on its side at the finish.

This year’s entry fared worse as it failed to move at all.

Asked what the biggest challenge of the contest was, Molln laughingly said, “Getting it to move.”

The teams also showed creativity through the names of their cars, as there was the Taco Tornado, The Meat Mobile, The Bread Monster, The Hot Rod Hoagie (which clocked the fastest time), Speed of Lifesaver and The English Cannon.

One of the most ambitious and colorful entries was the car made entirely out of candy. With a body and wheels made from melted Jolly Ranchers and featuring candy cane axles, it ultimately proved too sticky, as it was another entry that didn’t want to cross the starting line.

“I enjoyed working as a group and the friendships it helped create,” Seth Ludford, a junior at St. Bede, said.

“I liked the design process and seeing how far your imagination can go,” DJ Piper, an IVCC student from Princeton, said during the races.

After the races, each team was asked to complete a survey that asked about how the design process challenged them; whether it increased their interest in engineer-

McNABB — The Starved Rock Runners 26.2 X 5 Team Marathon will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Putnam County Junior High School.

Teams will consist of five members, all male, all female, or mixed.

There also will be couples teams and solo divisions, with couples teams and solo runners running one 5.24-mile loop.

The race will be chip timed (not a relay), and all runners will start at the gun.

High school track team runners are welcome, as this event is in compliance with all IHSA regu-

DARLENE NORRIS MORGANTOWN, Ky. — Darlene Adamecz Norris, 78, of Morgantown, Ky., passed away Saturday, March 10, 2018, at the Hospice House of Southern Kentucky.

She was born Nov. 2, 1939, in Blue Island, Ill., to the late Stephen and Margaret Lange Adamecz.

Darlene was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville. She loved to stitch baby blankets, cook, collect Precious Moments and going to auctions with her husband Merle.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Merle Norris of Morgantown, Ky.; two daughters, Patricia Ann Noah of Florida and Kim Lee Moore of Bowling Green, Ky.; a son, Richard Allen Norris (Jayme) of Morgantown, Ky.; nine grandchildren, Mark Noah Jr. of California, Melissa Noah of Illinois, Thomas Millsaps of Indiana, Jason Millsaps of Indiana, Krystle Gabbard of Bowling Green, Ky., Richard Wellin of Illinois, and Austin, Shane and Dean Norris of Morgantown, Ky.; many great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Adamecz (Jacqui) of Illinois and Michael Adamecz of Illinois; a sister, Joanne Hart of Illinois; and her best friend, Carol Ester of Granville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Annette Millsaps; and a sister, Eleanor Cavallini.

John was born June 21, 1924, in Mark to John and Katherine (Mastaglio) Barnato. He married Enis M. Pia-

centini on Sept. 15, 1945.

He graduated from Hopkins Township High School in 1942. John owned and operated Barnato Insurance for 28 years and retired in 1986. He previously had farmed for 16 years.

John was a past member of Oglesby Rotary Club, LaSalle Lions Club, Ladd Moose Club and LaSalle Elks.

He also enjoyed gardening, puzzles, horse racing and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Enis M. Barnato of Mark; one sister, Adelaine Eschenbaum of Spring Valley; and two nieces and a nephew, Kathryn (Gordon) Virgo of Spring Valley, George (Victoria) Eschenbaum of Spring Valley and Rita (Gordon) Armstrong of Peru.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mayme Kunkel.

He graduated from Putnam County High School and attended DeVry University to continue his education.

He served the U.S. Army and had been deployed to serve in “Operation Iraqi Freedom”. Larry was a maintenance engineer for the Army National Guard in Marseilles since 2012.

He was a member of the American Legion in Reedsburg, Wis., and was a member of the First Wisconsin Civil War Reenactments.

Survivors include his father, Larry Faletti of Granville; his mother, Marlene Faletti of Holmes Beach, Fla.; his wife, Nicole Faletti of Tiskilwa; two sons, Lawrence Faletti and Landon Faletti; two daughters, Jaimee Faletti and Rihley Faletti; one sister, Theresa (Justin)

RUBY BARE HENRY — Ruby Grace Bare, 89, of Henry, formerly of Lostant, passed away at 4:15 a.m. Monday, March 5, at Heartland Health Care Center in Henry.

She was born Jan. 22, 1929, in Magnolia to David L. and Nancy Corine (Kelley) Frye. She married William H. Bare on Sept. 24, 1944, in Henry. She shared the love of her life for 69 years. William preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 2013.

Ruby was happy to be a young Navy wife in World War II and was proud to be a farmer’s wife and homemaker.

She enjoyed music, reading and listening to books on tape, sewing and baking. Ruby was a participant in many roles in the Henry United Methodist Church, such as singing in the choir. She was a member of a garden club. The most important thing to her was her family. She cherished every family member and helped however she could.

Surviving are her children, William E. (Cindy) Bare of Canton, Ga., Donna (Tom) Spurlin of Poplar Grove and Randall C. Bare of Ottawa; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Paul Edward and Donald Lee Frye; one infant brother; one sister, Edythe Fern Calvert; and one infant sister.

PRINCETON — Learning Stage, the education committee of the Princeton Theatre Group, has AmeriCorps positions open for the summer 2018 season. The successful applicants will be on site from June 1 through Aug. 6.

AmeriCorps volunteers volunteer 300 hours and receive approximately $3,000 separated into a living stipend and a college tuition waver.

While anyone may apply, these AmeriCorps positions offer theater arts majors a way to build their resumes.

Camp 56 will be the primary responsibility for one volunteer, with another volunteer providing

limited support. Camp responsibilities include programming, supervision of campers ages 8-18, paperwork, and communicating with parents and Festival 56 staff.

Additional volunteers will be responsible for multiple educational platforms. They will serve as moderators for three venues: Meet The Plays, a panel discussion with directors, technical staff and genre experts concerning the upcoming season; Basic Bill, a 10-minute lesson on the life and times of Shakespeare, including the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” to be presented before each of nine performances; and Opening Night Talkbacks, five

post-performance discussions with the actors, production staff and directors.

Additional duties include backstage education and story hour with the Princeton Public Library, featuring the works of Arnold Lobel, author of “A Year with Frog and Toad,” Festival 56’s Theatre for Young Audiences presentation this summer.

The volunteers will also gather specific data throughout the season.

This includes a count of patrons for demographic purposes and interviews with play-goers, providing the staff with informed data to drive the future. Each AmeriCorps volunteer will be mentored initially with the

goal of becoming independent by the end of the season.

This might be Mike Madigan’s last hurrah M

y Springfield insider friends say I am loony to think 2018 will be Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan’s last hurrah. Yet I think it will be. I array my arguments below; first a little history.

Democrat Mike Madigan has been representing the once-Irish Southwest Side of Chicago for half a century.

Madigan was elected a delegate to the Illinois Constitutional Convention in 1969 and then immediately moved to the state House. He has been there ever since, the last three decades as speaker.

I served with Mike back in his early days, during my brief two terms in the House. Mike was very quiet as a young lawmaker (he still is), learning his craft in support of his patron, Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, the Boss.

I don’t recall Mike having ever been challenged in his renomination and election to the speakership by his fellow House Democrats. The rank-and-file appreciated his campaign cash and meekly

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan feared his backlash should they challenge him.

Things are different now. For the past three years, Gov. Bruce Rauner has been softening up Mike. Rauner has used his millions to bombard Madigan with relentless, often vicious attacks via television, mailers, and even a movie about the speaker that appeared in commercial film houses.

The barrage has worked. Three years ago, my farmer friends at the back table in Connie’s Country Kitchen, next door to my office, had never heard of Madigan. They probably didn’t even know there was an office called “Speaker.”

Today, ask them about Illinois politics, and they immediately launch into their own attacks on that “g-d” Madigan, the root of all our problems.

And now Democrats are attacking Madigan, who is not only speaker but also chair of their own Illinois Democratic Party.

Four of the five Democratic candidates for governor are openly attacking Madigan. Unheard of.

The fifth candidate, billionaire J.B. Pritzker, is seen as “Madigan’s guy.” “J.B.” has, glaringly, refused to join in, or even mention Madigan in his appearances. If elected, he will be seen as Madigan’s lackey.

Worse, a credible candidate for Democratic nomination to the Illinois House, in a district just north of Chicago, has demanded that the Madigan-backed candidate return the $50,000 he has contributed to her campaign.

This challenger to Madigan’s candidate did a poll recently, reported by Rich Miller, the state’s leading political pundit, that found “70 percent expressed doubts about voting for a candidate who was backed by Madigan’s team.”

Miller talks about “the Madigan Tax,” the extra money and effort Democratic candidates must put

into their races to offset the negatives of being linked to Madigan.

The “tax” may become unbearable.

Madigan has recently been criticized for his handling of sexual harassment charges against one of his staffers. The criticisms add to Madigan’s problems.

When some of your own see you as a liability to their political careers, your time has come.

Madigan won’t, of course, step down from anything before the November election. His goal in life is to elect a big Democratic House majority — and defeat Bruce Rauner, his bete noire.

I am looking ahead to the December caucus of newly elected Democratic House members. At the caucus, members nominate one of their own to be elected speaker in January on the House floor.

They will nominate Madigan, of course. But, if 11 or so members, from the suburbs and downstate probably, have the gumption to withhold their support for Madigan, all hell could break loose.

A tutorial on just what ‘downstate’ means

A

TV reporter got a bit snippy with an Illinois gubernatorial candidate the other day and informed her that Rock Island and Moline are not in “downstate” Illinois.

I lived in Rock Island for almost a decade, and I considered myself a downstater. In fact, most of the folks I knew there did. But times change, so I called up longtime Quad-City journalist John Beydler and asked him.

“Of course, the Quad Cities is downstate,” he said with a sigh.

Downstate is a geopolitical term, Charles Wheeler III, a journalism professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield, added.

“Traditionally, downstate Illinois is the 96 counties in Illinois that aren’t Cook County or one of the counties touching Cook. That means that Rockford is just as much downstate as Carbondale,” he said.

No argument here.

It’s a sociological term more than a geographic one.

“Downstate is what geographers refer to as a ‘vernacular region.’

There isn’t anything negative about the term. It simply refers to the area of Illinois that isn’t as closely tied to Chicago as those in the immediate metropolitan area.

So, places like Quincy, Galesburg, Peoria, Carbondale, Rockford and the Quad Cities are all considered part of downstate Illinois,” said Dr. Norman Moline, who taught culture and geography at Augustana College in Rock Island for 45 years.

Illinois is hardly unique in these

geopolitical designations that don’t always make sense by just looking at map. For example, San Francisco is considered “northern California” even though it is closer to Mexico than to the Oregon border.

In Maine, the area of the state known as “downeast” is north of where most Mainers live. Go figure.

I chatted with Wally Haas, editorial page editor of the Rockford Register Star, and asked him about this “downstate” designation for Illinois’ most northern major city.

“Just about everyone in Rockford knows that when the term ‘downstate’ is used, it includes Rockford, even though we are about as far north as you can get in Illinois. You’ll hear some folks who don’t like the term, but everyone knows it includes us.”

Rich Morthland, a communications professor at Black Hawk College in Moline and a former state legislator, said, “Of course the Quad Cities is in downstate Illinois.

People in the area know that. When

I was in Springfield, I was a member of the Downstate Caucus.”

Morthland, by the way, is the running mate of Jeanne Ives, the candidate who was “corrected.”

Peoria is in the north central part of Illinois. But for decades, the Peoria Journal-Star’s front page proclaimed it “Downstate Illinois’ largest newspaper.”

So, am I picking on this young KWQC reporter who “corrected” a candidate about what is or isn’t “downstate”?

No. But it is important for all of us to remember that meanings of words can be nuanced. And sometimes their definition is not quite what one might think.

ou could choose any number of marquee dilemmas to illustrate how broken congressional politics has become.

Guns, Russian interference, climate change — Americans want progress on all of them and get little from Capitol Hill.

But to my mind, nothing illustrates the dire state of our politics better than how we act on the federal budget.

This is not a glamorous issue, but it goes to the heart of our democracy. The budget is our operating system; it determines what the government does. Continually brushing against debt ceilings, fiscal cliffs, and shutdowns is a perversion of good government.

We are saddled these days with an irresponsible process that produces irresponsible budgets, and we pay an enormous price for this.

We move from one short- or medium-term continuing resolution to another. We stuff what should be 12 individual appropriation bills into unmanageable omnibus bills.

We let a handful of leadership

COMMENTARY Lee H. Hamilton staff craft our national blueprint, excluding most elected members of Congress from the process and forcing them, at the one point when they do have leverage — the final vote — to make a decision without having the time to read, debate, or amend what they’ve been handed.

Moreover, under Democrats and Republicans alike, the number of committee hearings at which outside experts have a chance to educate members of Congress has declined dramatically. Congressional leaders have managed to push both the experts and the vast majority of their own members out of the loop. This is the world’s greatest democracy?

federal money can’t plan ahead — eroding their confidence in the system. And year after year, we fail to face up to the problems confronting us.

An aging population, the security of our nation, our inability to deal with the changing speed and technology of warfare, rising health-care costs, slow wage and productivity growth, natural disasters, huge increases in the national debt — punting on the budget means that the meaningful solutions we need don’t get crafted. Congress is not doing its most important job.

Why is this? Why have we set aside a process that was developed over more than two centuries and that for many decades enabled the government to do what it ought and to pay for it responsibly?

Much of this is caused by extreme partisanship. We don’t work together to solve problems; each party demonizes its adversary, and respectful deliberation and civil discourse come to a halt.

In the 1960s, Republican House members “crossed the aisle” to elect Democrat Paul Powell speaker. In 1975, Lee Daniels led eight GOPers across the aisle to vote for fellow DuPage County Democratic House member Bill Redmond. Redmond was elected speaker with a combination of Democratic and Republican votes.

The Republican caucus would be, I aver, delighted to cross en masse to vote for just about any Democrat other than Madigan for speaker.

And some of the Democrats who voted for Madigan would sigh with relief as well, I’m sure.

This is where fortitude comes into politics. It takes the strength of character that could result in the loss of lifelong friends, the end of one’s promising career in politics.

That may not sound like a big deal to readers, but it is.

I hope enough muster the fortitude.

I have nothing personal against Mike Madigan, but half a century is enough.

GRANVILLE — Putnam County High School Theatre invites everyone to “Be Our Guest” as they present Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.”

The story tells of Belle (Elly Larsen), a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast (Kaleb Wright), who is really a prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the spell will be broken and he and

his castle servants will return to their former selves. Time is running out and Lumiere (Ryan Mooberry), Babette (Olivia Lawley), Mrs. Potts (Anna Mattern), Chip (Maddox Poole), Cogsworth (Ceceilya Taylor) and Madame (Justice Petersen) work together to help the Beast before they are doomed for all eternity.

The show will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15 and Friday, March

16, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17. Tickets are available at the door or by calling PCHS at 815882-2800, option 4. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. Participants will learn how to make a four-bean salad and take home sugar-substitute recipes.

Genealogy help available on March 24 PRINCETON — The Bureau County Genealogical Society will offer free genealogical help sessions by appointment on Saturday, March 24.

Two experienced Genealogical Society volunteers are eager to assist individuals that day wherever they are in their family research, whether they are entirely new to the hobby or are experienced and up against a “brick wall.”

For this first experience in scheduling these sessions, the Society is requesting that difficult

questions be limited to Bureau County research.

GRANVILLE — “An incredible program with incredible results” — that’s the picture painted for Putnam County Rotarians by Life Skills teacher Wendy Louis and job coach para-professional Missy Carlson at a recent Putnam County Rotary Club program.

Hosted by Rotarian and school superintendent Carl Carlson, the two presenters explained the benefits of the Putnam County PAES and STEP program for specially challenged students, providing life

skills training and “on-the-job” experience in jobs in Putnam County schools and in the local community.

Program faculty are most appreciative of those within the community who are willing to open their businesses to tours, work experiences and in some cases, paid jobs for program participants. The goal, they said, is to make it possible for program graduates to transition to fulfilling jobs and to be productive members of their communities.

MAGNOLIA — The Magnolia Fire Department will hold its annual chicken supper and ham distribution from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 24.

The dinner includes all-you-can-eat chicken with mostaccioli, salad, bread and dessert. The cost for this meal is $9 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children 5 and under.

All proceeds go toward equipment and

PCES fifth graders vote for their favorite 2018 Rebecca Caudill book MCNABB — Twenty-one fifth graders gathered to vote for their favorite 2018 Rebecca Caudill title on Feb. 27.

Students have been participating in the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award this school year, selecting books to read from the 20 nominees. To be eligible to attend the party, students had to read at least three titles from the list, pass the Accelerated Reader quiz for the book, and complete a worksheet detailing elements of the book. Students and staff enjoyed cookies, soda and ice cream with toppings.

Students liked many of the books and the overall winner was “Orbiting Jupiter” by Gary D. Schmidt.

Second place went to “Goodbye Stranger” by Rebecca Stead. Three books tied for third place: “Awkward” by Svetlana Chmakova, “The Bitter Side of Sweet” by Tara Sullivan and “Fuzzy Mud” by Louis Sachar. All votes were submitted to the state ISLMA website and an overall favorite of all students in the state of Illinois will be announced later in March.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Samantha Kohr of Putnam received a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education from Western Governors University (WGU).

The university held its 64th commencement ceremony at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 10 to celebrate the graduation of about 15,000 graduates from across the country.

Illinois Valley Community College support staff recently completed a “Sweet Cases” service project with a decorating party and potluck. Each year employees contribute to a charitable cause or give back to the community. This year, the focus was on children entering foster care. Money was raised to purchase 26 duffel bags and supplies for each including a teddy bear, blanket, hygiene kit, coloring book, and crayons. Employees decorated each bag with a personal touch. Sue Trost of Youth Service Bureau of Illinois Valley attended the party and accepted the bags to be used for central Illinois children entering foster care. “The project was an extremely positive experience and we were thrilled to partner with Youth Service Bureau,” said IVCC project coordinator Jeanette Frahm.

Honor your female ancestor PRINCETON — In recognition of Women’s History Month, the Bureau County Genealogical Society is inviting anyone in the public to attend the Thursday, March 22, regular monthly meeting of the Society and to tell of some woman in their family history they would like to acknowledge.

This sharing of stories or descriptions of admirable women will be the program for the meeting which will begin at 7 p.m. at the Society library at 629 S. Main St. in Princeton. The character sketches or stories may exemplify tales of courage, indepen-

dence, hardship, devotion or any quality that the presenter chooses to feature. The seating arrangement for the audience will encourage a friendly exchange of stories. It is not expected that everyone in the audience will wish to speak.

DANVILLE — Lakeview College of Nursing recently held a ceremony to recognize students who achieved the transition into clinical practice within their bachelor’s degree nursing program.

Addison Pavlick of Granville was one of the students who received a white coat during the celebration.

About 25 students from Lakeview’s Charleston and Danville campuses participated in the event that was held this fall at the Wyndham Garden in Urbana. A large number of supportive family members and friends also attended.

The college’s faculty, who were also wearing white coats, cloaked the students with their new garments. The white color of the coat represents compassionate caring, and the student’s receipt of the jacket demonstrates a commitment to this compassionate and humanistic care, according to Carolyn Rauch, who is a faculty member at Lakeview College of Nursing. Rauch spoke at the event about the symbolism that the white coat represents.

“Historically, the white coat ceremony has been reserved for a college of medicine as a way of welcoming new physicians into professional practice. The new physicians would receive their white lab coats upon graduation in recognition of their accomplishment,” said Rauch.

Within the nursing community, the right of passage into professional practice has traditionally

been symbolized by graduates receiving their college’s official nursing pin. Although this tradition continues, the nursing profession, as well as overall healthcare, has changed, explained Rauch.

Members of Lakeview’s Student Government Association led the Nightengale Nursing Pledge and the White Coat Oath. Students recited verses that call for practicing the profession to the best of their ability as well as to promote, advocate

and strive to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient.

Lakeview College of Nursing offers a bachelor of science in nursing degree. It is a single-purpose, private institution that has specialized in nursing education in the Danville area since 1894.

Lakeview began offering a cooperative program with Eastern Illinois University in Charleston in the fall of 2001.

• HAMILTON Continued from Page 11 Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I don’t think the president and the Congress can function effectively unless they work across partisan, ideological and geographic divisions to restore compromise and negotiation to a central role in governing.

That’s because the budget is where all our differences on the major issues come to a focus. It’s where our political leaders establish priorities, debate them, and ought to resolve them. There’s no more crucial test of the ability to govern.

So we’ve set aside a process that

worked reasonably well and substituted a process that falls short in every way. Because Congress turns over substantially every few years, this means that it is now basically populated by politicians who have never experienced good process — let alone developed the skills to make it work.

What may be most worrisome is that few people on Capitol Hill seem to care about this.

But if they don’t, you should. And you should let them know that you do.

Rep. Kinzinger announces art competition WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) has announced the official start of the 2018 Congressional Art Competition and will now be accepting submissions from all high school students that live in the 16th Congressional District.

With this announcement, Congressman Kinzinger released the following statement: “This competition encourages and recognizes young artists in our community to showcase their talents and skills, and to share their creativity. I’m always impressed with

the artwork we receive, and I am already looking forward to seeing the outstanding submissions that this year’s competition will bring.”

In addition to having their art displayed, the first-place winner will be awarded two tickets to Washington, D.C., to attend the official art show opening.

The submission deadline for the 36th annual competition is 5 p.m.

Friday, April 20, in the Ottawa District Office.
