NIU professor stresses importance of storm safety Granville student: Beware, tornadoes can happen at night

WELLS Shaw Media Illinois DEKALB — After 15 years of working at Northern Illinois University, meteorology professor Walker Ashley said he has first-hand experience of seeing what tornadoes can do. His parents’ house was hit by a tornado when he was a child living in Georgia, and it wouldn’t be the last time he bore witness to the damage a tornado can inflict.

Ashley went on to track the tornadoes that formed and then struck the DeKalb County town of Fairdale on April 9, 2015. When the “major” tornado hit Fairdale, it ended up killing two elderly people.

“I’ve seen some of the most violent tornadoes on Earth,” Ashley said. “I know what they can do.”

Although DeKalb County residents might be eager for winter to end so spring can begin, Ashley said they also should anticipate storms

by preparing for them.

“At the [storm] warning stage, we ask people to have a weather radio, which will alert [those people] in the overnight hours,” Ashley said.

“Make sure they have the wireless alert on their cellphones. We ask for the radio because they silence their phones.”

Ashley said weather radios can be bought at most retailers as well as at Amazon.com, for about $30. He said the radios take only about five minutes to set up.

“They’re easier than IKEA instructions,” Ashley said.

NIU junior Billy Faletti from Granville is studying meteorology under Ashley as well. He said tornadoes also can occur at night.

“The main thing to drive home is tornadoes don’t care what time of day it is. They don’t care what time of year it is,” Faletti said. “If the conditions are there, they can happen — at any time. There’s no rule.”

Ashley said that when a tornado warning sounds, it is time for residents to take action and get into their respective tornado shelters.

“The way I think is, you wouldn’t go into a car without putting on your seatbelt,” he said. “The chance

of getting in an accident is small, but you still put it on.”

Ashley said he and his wife view their family’s safety plan the same way. “We get underneath the stairwell in the basement,” Ashley said.

“Usually I’ll be out storm-chasing and calling my wife to prepare to get down in the basement. Practice what you preach. I want my family safe just as everybody else.”

He advised residents without a basement to find the sturdiest place in their home and to take shelter away from windows.

Concerning residents who take for granted the fact they might have heard several tornado warnings without witnessing or being affected by one, Ashley said they should take the same precautions to protect themselves because it’s never certain when a tornado might strike.

“I’ve seen too much injury and death and experienced way too many of these [storm] events to not take them seriously,” Ashley said.

He said people should not depend on the area warning sirens. He called warning sirens an “antiquated” system. Ashley said it’s not the tornado that kills people, but the wind.

JOSEPH R. PANIER JR. Born: Sept. 30, 1923; Mark, IL Died: Feb. 22, 2020 PEORIA, Ariz. — Joe was born in Mark, IL on September 30, 1923 to Joseph & Rose (Monier) Panier, Sr. He grew up in Mark and graduated from Hopkins Township High School in 1941. He played on the High School Basketball Team. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army to serve in World War II, and before leaving he married his high school sweetheart, Jean Harker on December 20, 1943. His armed forces service took him to England, France and Germany. When he returned from the service in 1945, he worked as a carpenter in the local area for 28 years. In 1974, he was elected Putnam County Clerk, where he served for 13 years prior to retiring.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church for over 65 years, serving as choir director and Sunday school teacher, and member of the church board for over 40 years.

He loved sports of all kinds, but especially loved softball and played on a local league for many years.

His love of music included being in the Ottawa, Peru and Princeton barbershop groups for 25 years. He participated with the Putnam County Educational Foundation for 10 years, which put on musicals every year to benefit the

local high school. He also directed the Putnam County Chorus.

He volunteered his time in the Granville School Board, the Boy Scout Program and was a coach for the Granville Little League. He was also President of the Hopkins Alumni Association for 20 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 180. With his carpentry experience, he helped build a home for Habitat for Humanity in Granville and spent a week in Louisiana with a group of volunteers from Granville, rebuilding homes after Hurricane Katrina.

In 2012 Joe was in a Southwest Airlines TV commercial highlighting Southwest’s support of the Honor Flights for military veterans to Washington, D.C. In 2017 Joe and Jean moved from Granville to Sun City West, AZ to be near their family.

He is survived by his wife, Jean of 76 years; his daughters, Jan (Ted) Querciagrossa and Joyce Zellmer, all of Peoria, AZ; his son, James (Jennifer) Panier of Plainfield, IL; four grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, one brother and his son-in-law, Ron Zellmer.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Amtrak recently announced that the first of its 28 new Acela trainsets, scheduled to enter service throughout the Northeast Corridor in 2021, left Alstom’s facility in Hornell, N.Y., on Feb. 17, bound for high-speed testing at the Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo, Colo.

Betty was also owner and manager of Nuske’s Apartment Complex in Toluca from 1975 to the early 90’s.

Betty organized and assisted in church youth activities. She was President, Vice-President and Treasurer, on the executive board for the women’s group in her church.

She was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Toluca. Betty served as an election judge for 10 years in Marshall County, Precinct Committee Woman of Hennepin and Vice chairwoman of Putnam County. She was also a member of Marshall-Putnam County Homemaker’s Extension Association.

Betty loved painting, reading, needlework, camping, fishing and travel.

Survivors include one son, Joseph (Gina) Nuske of LaSalle; one daughter, Judy (Marty) Moreno of Granville; three brothers, John (Sara) Mix of Alexandria, VA, Jim (Kathy) Mix of Spring Valley and David Mix of Utica; two sisters-inlaw, Joyce Mix of Utica and Jeanette Nuske of Washburn; one grandson, Colton Edward Nuske and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; one brother, Bill and son, Jerry.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church at 200 N. Hickory St., Toluca, IL 61369.

Patrols will be increased to catch impaired drivers HENNEPIN — The Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office announced it will conduct special patrols on St. Patrick’s Day — Tuesday, March 17 — to crack down on impaired drivers and encourage people to wear their seat belts.

Celebrated throughout the country, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest holidays of the year because of the number of drunken drivers on the road.

“If you’ll be drinking or using another impairing substance, plan ahead for a sober ride home,” Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle said. “We urge our community residents and visitors to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day responsibly. We’ll be out in force to keep impaired drivers off the roads and help ensure that everyone makes it home safely,” Doyle said.

Doyle noted that pedestrians are at risk, too. “If you are walking, keep an eye out for cars. If you’re a designated driver, be alert for impaired walkers who may not obey street signs and pedestrian signals,” he said.

The Illinois “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns are administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds managed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Born: Nov. 29, 1935; Lincoln Died: March 5, 2020; Peoria HENNEPIN — Betty Ann Nuske, 83, of Hennepin passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

Service was at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2020 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Toluca. Pastor Nathan Johnson officiated. Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Toluca.

Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Toluca. Additional visitation was from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2020 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Toluca.

Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.

Betty was born on November 29, 1936 in Lincoln to Robert “Tom” and Velda Pauline (Snow) Mix. She married Donald Nuske on October 18, 1959 in Wenona. He preceded her in death on October 4, 2015.

She graduated from Wenona High School and attended Illinois Valley Community College. Betty was a cashier at Methodist Medical Center of IL and she was also a bookkeeper/ cashier at Oakford Wholesaler of Groceries. She worked at Blakely’s where she managed the jewelry and millinery departments and setup displays. Betty was owner and manager at Nuske’s A & W Drive Inn in Toluca from 19591973. She also owned and managed The Gift Box in Toluca from 1984-1988.

GRANVILLE — Putnam County Rotary’s 2020 Agri-Business Night will be held Thursday, March 26, at the Putnam County High School in Granville. The annual event honors area farmers and ag-related businesses during National Agriculture Week, bringing community members together for dinner and a program featuring topics of importance to local agriculture.

This year’s program topic is “Hemp: An Economic Opportunity?” featuring Drew Schlumpf, director of hemp procurement at Marquis Extraction Technology, a part of Marquis Energy.

Schlumpf is a graduate of Bureau Valley High School and the University of Illinois. Following graduation, he worked for the U of I and BP as an agronomist, experimenting with alternative feedstocks and plants to create new sources for liquid fuel. He then moved into large-scale farming, and eventually returned to his home area as local territory manager for Pioneer Hi-Bred.

With his transition seven years later to Marquis, Schlumpf is at the cutting edge of a new industry that will likely have a major impact on the local economy and the future of hemp production, CBD Drew Schlumpf oil extraction and more — a “fast-growing” industry of which we know very little, but can learn a lot by attending this year’s Ag-Night event on March 26 at Putnam County High School.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $15 each, open to the public.

GRANVILLE — “The Addams Family,” a new musical, with book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and music by Andrew Lippa, will be presented by Putnam County High School on Thursday, March 19, Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21.

“The Addams Family” embraces the wackiness in every family, features an original story and it’s every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family — a man her parents have never met.

And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

Performances will be in the Putnam County High School auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students.

Putnam County sixth-grade students participate in reading program MCNABB — The Putnam County Junior High School sixth-grade students participated in the Rebecca Caudill Young Reader’s Award program.

This Illinois award is determined by student votes. This award encourages students to read for personal satisfaction and develops a statewide awareness of outstanding children’s literature. The book “The Prince and the Dressmaker” was chosen as being the favorite among the sixth-grade participants out of the 20 nominated books.

This program was introduced to the students through a cooperative effort among Amy Carboni’s sixthgrade classes and Debbie Thompson, PCJH media paraprofessional.

The Putnam County Educational Foundation approved the grant that helped pay for copies of the books and the treats for the party.

This year, an Association of Illinois School Library Education grant was awarded to PCJH and they each received a copy of a Rebecca Caudill book, provided by Bound to Stay Bound. PC District

Local scholarships available for Henry-Senachwine students HENRY — Several college scholarships of local nature are available for high school seniors in the Henry-Senachwine School District.

The Henry Chamber Scholarship Committee is announcing that the applications for these scholarships are available now from the Office of the Guidance Counselor at Henry-Senachwine High School. The applications can be obtained from the guidance office by the senior student or his/her parent. The application is to be completed and returned to that office by Friday, April 3.

These scholarships include the Dewey Family Scholarship, the Finfgeld Family Scholarship and the Henry Chamber of Commerce Scholarships. Both the Dewey and Finfgeld Scholarships are endowed by the respective families from the Henry community. The Henry Chamber of Commerce Scholarships are sponsored by the local/ current Chamber of Commerce of Henry.

The Dewey Scholarship is for a Henry-Senachwine senior student who plans to attend a four-year college or university. It is a $1,000

award per year renewable for four years. The Finfgeld Scholarship is for an HSHS senior graduate attending a two-year community college in the area such as Illinois Central College, Illinois Valley Community College or Blackhawk College. It is an award of $1,500 each year for two years as the student remains in good standing at the school. The Henry Chamber of Commerce Scholarships are awarded to the valedictorian and salutatorian of the graduating class of HSHS. The Chamber Scholarships are a $1,000 award for each for one year.

The Henry Scholarship Program has been operating consistently for many years for the benefit of students in the local high school, Henry-Senachwine. The operation of the scholarship program is conducted by the Henry Chamber Scholarship Committee currently chaired by Meaghan Dean, a faculty member of HSHS. Attorney Ryan Anderson serves as the vice-chairman. Other members of the committee include Dr. Jon Hill, Marjorie (Finfgeld) Hunt, Joyce Wood and Kenneth Williamson.

Marshall-Putnam Retired Teachers Association meeting HENRY — The first meeting of 2020 for the Marshall-Putnam Retired Teachers Association will be Tuesday, March 24, at Shandy’s Pub & Grub at 1106 Western Ave. in Henry. Lunch will be served at noon, consisting of pulled pork, coleslaw, baked beans and chips for $10.

The program will be “Listen to a real survival adventure: Molly Brown.” The

historic heroine will be portrayed by Tricia Kelly. Following the program, Firefly Jewelry and Crafts will be open for a tour. Anyone interested in this educational program is welcome to join us for lunch, program and tour.

The next program will be June 16 at the Henry American Legion with some lively music under the direction of Bob Eckert.

Any sixth grader who reads all 20 of the Rebecca Caudill books will have their name engraved on a plaque to be displayed at the school in honor of this accomplishment.

Students have until May 1 to meet the requirements to have their name on the plaque.
