McNabb seeks garage sale chief Current volunteer leader steps down MCNABB — McNabb residents are looking for a coordinator for their annual townwide garage sale day. Tasks would include securing advertising with flyers, newspaper

and free radio ads, posting on Facebook, putting out the wooden signs and creating a map for distribution on the day of the sale.

The current volunteer coordinator has decided to discontinue this service to the residents of McNabb and the surrounding area because she is no longer able to get this task done on a timely basis. It’s time for a fresh

new perspective for this project.

If you would like to have your own sale that day, maybe two residents would be able to work together. It has been proved it really is to everyone’s advantage to have the sales all on the same day, to get the best crowd.

Gateway Services celebrates 50 years Open house planned for Sunday, March 15 PRINCETON — In honor of the 50th anniversary, the public is invited to attend an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 15, at the main Gateway Services offices located at 406 S. Gosse Blvd. in Princeton.

Light refreshments will be served.

This will be an opportunity for visitors to tour the building, learn about the various programs and meet some of the staff.

Their humble beginnings started on March 2, 1970, in an abandoned schoolhouse in Malden. Staffed with a crew of three, one program and $35,000, Gateway Services was born.

Now — 50 years later — Gateway has seven programs, approximately 115 staff, three office buildings, a mechanic’s garage and six residential homes, and an annual budget exceeding $5 million. They moved to their current location on South Gosse Boulevard in Princeton in 1978.

In 1978, their first home was rented to provide 24-hour residential supports. Today, they have six CILA homes, two of which are owned by Gateway Services, and four are rental agreements between a landlord and the individuals who live there.

Prior to 1989, transportation was Gateway-specific. Today, BPART consists of Gateway as the lead administrator and three partner agencies (St. Margaret’s Hospital, Bureau County Senior Citizens Association and Putnam County Senior Center).

In Fiscal Year 2019, the BPART system had 28 vehicles on the road.

They logged 602,912 miles and provided 65,808 rides.

In 2007, the day program expanded from the Princeton location to include

an office in Henry to better serve individuals from eastern Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties.

Over the years, Gateway saw programs change from recycling to a sheltered workshop and a woodshop.

Recycling closed in 1992, followed by the woodshop a few years later, and then the sheltered workshop in 1997.

Groundwater Awareness Week is March 10-16 ‘Time for Your Water Well Checkup’ is theme of week; free sampling kits available locally The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments are partnering with the Marshall-Putnam and Bureau County Farm Bureaus and the National Groundwater Association to remind residents it is “Time for Your Water Well Checkup.”

National Groundwater Awareness Week is March 8-14. Just as you check your furnace or smoke detector batteries seasonally, spring is a good season to have an annual water well checkup before peak

water use season begins.

Why is it a good idea to have water wells checked annually?

Wells can provide high-quality drinking water, and about half the U.S. population receives its drinking water from wells. An annual checkup is the best way to ensure problem-free service and quality water.

Preventive maintenance can also be less costly than emergency maintenance, as well as prolonging the life of your well. The local health

department further recommends you test your water whenever there is a change in taste, odor or appearance, or when the system is serviced.

Local health departments are partnering with local Farm Bureaus to provide free water well sampling test kits to Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County residents. The sampling kits will test for coliform/E.coli bacteria in well water.

The kits are available on a firstcome, first-serve basis, and limited to one per household.

During National Groundwater Awareness Week, residents can pick up the free kits at the following locations Monday through Friday

during their business hours: • Marshall-Putnam County Farm Bureau, 509 Front St., Henry.

• Bureau County Farm Bureau, 1407 N. Main St., Princeton.

• Bureau County Health Department, 526 S. Bureau Valley Pkwy., Princeton.

• Putnam County Health Department, 220 E. High St., Suite 102, Hennepin (closed Fridays).

• Marshall County Health Department, 319 Sixth St., Lacon.

PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Sheriff issues appeal to citizens to help fight against crime Responding to the increasing number of people wanting to assist law enforcement officials and build a stronger partnership in the fight against crime, Sheriff Kevin Doyle announced that Putnam county citizens are being invited to become Associate Members of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association.

Membership appeals will go out in the mail shortly. Individuals choosing to join the voluntary program can do so for as little as $20, while businesses can show their support

for a $50 contribution.

The funding provides critically important technical resources, training and legislative support on key criminal justice issues.

Contributions are tax-deductible, and unlike other organizations in Illinois, the membership program does not solicit membership by telephone.

“With government funding becoming increasingly difficult to secure, the membership drive has taken on greater importance than ever before,” Doyle said. “The funding

is vital to helping us carry out our mission of making our communities safer places to live, work and play.”

The program is committed to its “no telemarketing” policy and only sends invitations to citizens to become members by mail. Starved Rock murderer released from prison Weger, 80, now lives at Chicago ministry SHAW MEDIA STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS Nearly six decades after he was sentenced, Chester Weger was released Feb. 21 from the Pickneyville Correctional Center.

The 80-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for the killing of one of three suburban Chicago women whose bodies were found in Starved Rock State Park. Weger was granted parole in November on his 24th try.

Weger maintained his innocence in an interview with KFVS-12, a CBS-TV affiliate of Cape Girardeau, Mo. “They ruined my life,” Weger said of the conviction.

Weger was convicted in 1961 of killing of Lillian Oetting, 50. Her remains were found at Starved Rock State Park in March 1960 along with the bodies of Frances Murphy, 47, and Mildred Lindquist, 50.

The three women, who were hiking together, were found bound, par-

tially nude and bludgeoned to death near the park’s popular St. Louis Canyon, which is framed by a scenic waterfall and a 100foot wall.

Weger, who turns 81 Chester in the coming weeks Weger and suffers from asthma and rheumatoid arthritis, will live and receive support services at St. Leonard’s Ministries in Chicago.

As a veteran, he will receive Social Security benefits and medical coverage from Veterans Affairs, his attorneys said.

Weger also told media Feb. 21 he didn’t think “this day would come” and he was going to spend time with his relatives. He thanked supporters, calling Friday “a good day.”

His release was delayed for 90 days because Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office sought to have him evaluated under the state’s Sexually Violent Persons Commitment Act. That law allows the state to hold people indefinitely in a secured facility in the custody of the Illinois Department of Human Services for

sex offender treatment if an evaluation deems that necessary.

Experts who conducted Weger’s evaluation concluded that he didn’t meet the legal criteria for the law to apply, a spokeswoman for Raoul said last week.

Granddaughters of the slain women have spoken out publicly against Weger’s planned release, as has the LaSalle County state’s attorney. But his supporters insist he poses no threat to public safety.

“I don’t believe anyone who has ever talked to this man believes he’s going to go out and hurt anyone,” Celeste Stack, one of Weger’s attorneys, told the Chicago Tribune.

Weger won’t be able to go near Starved Rock State Park.

Though the Illinois Prisoner Review Board wouldn’t confirm it, an attorney with knowledge of the Illinois corrections system said Weger’s terms of release would include a provision keeping him away from the scene of the 1960 triple murder.

GRANVILLE — The Special Education Office for Putnam County School District 535 has announced that it plans to destroy all temporary special education records of students who have transferred, graduated or have otherwise permanently withdrawn from school by the end of the

2013-14 school year. Information to be destroyed includes intelligence test scores, evaluations, IEPs, psychological reports, social/developmental histories, and other data classified as “temporary records” in the Illinois Records Act. The files will not include academic transcripts, attendance

records or other records contained in the student permanent record.

Danika Falkenhayn delivered a healthy baby boy Feb. 25 in her mom’s car, which they stopped outside Horizon House after it became clear she wouldn’t make it to Illinois Valley Community Hospital in time.

Mother and baby both did fine and were scheduled to be discharged the next day from IVCH. The safe delivery was a group effort. Danika’s mom, Jenny Churchill, was at the wheel and her sister, fourth-year medical student Nadia Churchill-Gilstrap, helped deliver

“I’m really glad she was there,” Danika said of her sis, who’ll be a doctor this spring.

House lot and little Luke quickly made his debut, measuring a shade under 8 pounds, 19 1/2 inches, after a whirlwind delivery of about 20 minutes. They wrapped him in a blanket and resumed the drive to the hospital.

Luke’s father happened to be en route, too.

“I was leaving work in Spring Valley and I’m thinking it’s going to be a long night,” Adam Falkenhayn recalled. “Then the nurse tells me, ‘Have you been told? They gave birth in the car.’”

The biggest surprise, though, was learning the baby’s gender.

“In the chaos, we didn’t check right away,” Danika admitted. “Then I got to the hospital and I thought, ‘Oh, I could check and see if it’s a boy or a girl.’ It was kind of an afterthought.”

Luke was brought home to Princeton, where he joined big brother Oliver. The family will get to see his aunt graduate in May from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford.

Nadia is going into family medicine. Of course.

friend and I recently had our first dining experience at The Study Supper Club, located in downtown LaSalle at 414 First St. The weather that day was cold and gloomy, but our excitement grew throughout the day, as we anxiously waited to chow down on what we hoped would be a lot of delicious food for dinner.

We weren’t disappointed.

The two of us were promptly noticed and seated upon entering.

The dim lighting added to the cozy atmosphere, illuminated by candles on the tables.

In line with the restaurant’s name, the “Study” has tons of books lining the walls in shelves.

Our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and specials. She was quick to bring us our sides, meals and drinks. My friend loved that we were given our own pitcher of water at the table, and asked that I include that detail in this piece.

We started with an appetizer, Wisconsin Cheese Curds ($7), which are crispy battered white cheddar with a side of homestyle meat sauce.

Entrées include a basket of fresh, warm rolls, plus a choice of two of the following: cup of homemade soup of the day; side salad with choice of dressing; choice of baked potato, seasoned waffle fries or American fries; side of pasta; or vegetable of the day.

For my dinner, I ordered Smothered Chicken ($17). The meal was boneless, skinless breast, sauteed and smothered with mushrooms, onions and mozzarella cheese.

My chicken was soft and flavorsome, and I loved the amount of cheese, mushrooms and onions on top.

My friend ordered Chicken Pasta Parmesan ($17) — a pan-seared chicken breast, meat sauce, melted mozzarella cheese with a side pasta.

My friend said the chicken was tender but crispy on the outside.

We agreed that the meal was very filling, and there was more than enough food for us to have boxed up to eat after we left.

Although we did not have any cocktails during dinner, the restaurant includes a full bar, which has an inviting shape and location

for conversation. When looking around the restaurant, other guests appeared to be pleased with their experiences and food.

This restaurant drove deep into my heart when the check came — in a good way. The check was delivered inside a book. As a lover of words, this thoughtful action really spoke to me.

We plan to visit The Study Supper

SHADOWS OF THE BLUE AND GRAY

Third drawdown planned for Civil War re-enactment Event will be March 14 at Moose Lodge PRINCETON — The third annual fundraiser drawdown to benefit Shadows of the Blue and Gray is fast approaching.

It will be held Saturday, March 14, at the Princeton Moose Lodge.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $40, which includes dinner for two. The drawdown’s grand prize is $750, second is $500, and third is $250.

“You do not have to be present to win, but the purchase of a ticket is required,” Edd Robinson, event organizer, stated.

The money raised will help support the 23rd annual Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War living history re-enactment in Princeton, which is scheduled for October.

“The Princeton Shadows of the

Blue and Gray has been active for over two decades,” Robinson stated, “sharing and portraying the history of the American Civil War not only across the nation, but here in Illinois hometowns and small cities in each county of the state.”

In order to host the event and continue to make it one of the best in Illinois, funds must be raised to cover the costs.

“If you would just like to come and have dinner with Civil War-era re-enactors dressed in period clothing, tickets for dinner alone will be $15 per person,” Robinson stated.

People are invited to come and spend the evening, bid on silent auction items and help support the event. Robinson said 100 percent of the donations made at the fundraiser are put right back into the Civil War re-enactment event.

LASALLE — The Women’s Inspired Network will host its 2020 kickoff gathering at Lock 16 Café and Visitor’s Center in LaSalle on Tuesday, March 10.

The evening will include a program about the 100th anniversary of the 19th Constitutional Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote. The featured guests, former Appellate Court Judge Peg Breslin and Justice Mary Kay O’Brien, will present an interesting history of the Women’ Suffrage Movement and share plans for other upcoming area events.

The gathering will begin at 5:30 p.m., and includes soup, sandwich and the traditional WIN dessert bar.

WIN is a women’s giving circle hosted by the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation, one of 850 similar organizations in the U.S., and one of 35 in Illinois. Community Foundations encourage collective giving and combine the financial resources of individuals, families, charitable organizations and corporations to improve their respective communities. Grants and scholarships from the SRCCF positively impact social services, health care, education, disaster relief, the environment, the arts, tourism and economic development. Until 2015, Starved Rock Country, comprised of LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties, was one of the few areas in Illinois not support-

ed by a community foundation.

The Women’s Inspired Network is part of a growing international movement and is made up of local women who recognize the exponential effect collective giving has in enhancing the quality of life.

Members of WIN have raised more than $52,000, awarded eight competitive grants and have created a substantial $10,000 endowment in the past three years. Grant recipients have received more than $33,000 and include Freedom House, Arukah Institute of Healing, Safe Journeys, the Starved Rock Regional Center, Second Story, Open Table Community Teen Outreach Center, Community Food Basket of Ottawa and the Starved Rock Associates for Vocational and Technical Education.

Women of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend the gathering to learn more about WIN and the Women’s Suffrage movement.

‘Minimalist IVCC’ photographic exhibit on display through May OGLESBY — “Minimalist IVCC,” a photographic exhibit by Dr. Michael J. Grabowski of Peru, will continue on display through May 29 in the B Building main hallway at Illinois Valley Community College.

The public exhibit directly across from Room B210 features about 25 images of IVCC exteriors and interiors. Grabowski has admired the college’s architecture since his days as a student in the late 1970s.

In his introduction to the display, Grabowski said, “The landscape of patterns, the shapes of light and shadows, the composition of the lines of a building seen from just the right angle, the richness of the colors of nature; these can bring me peace even on a stressful day. Once I began to look for it, I discovered that art is everywhere.

“This concept is the heart of my minimalist photography. Less becomes more not because less is inherently better, but through the camera I remove a moment from its

busy surroundings, looking at it as composition, as color, as art. … I try not to force a conclusion but to present a reflection.”

Minimalist IVCC and an extensive gallery of Grabowski’s work can be viewed online at his website Lost Cat Studio (lostcatstudio.com).

He believes students, employees and visitors will enjoy a respite while viewing the IVCC exhibit.

“Beauty and harmony can exist in the simplest things: the interplay of light and shadow, texture and patterns, shape and color. In a world cluttered by daily stresses, demands on our time and attention, deadlines, and pressure to perform, our surroundings easily fade into the background. Burdened and in need of rest, too busy to travel to see beautiful scenery or art, we can become drained.

“However, we do not always need to travel to decompress, but, for a moment, to breathe, relax, and look for the beauty that surrounds us.”

ROCK ISLAND — On Feb. 16 and 17, Augustana College hosted its annual Honor Band Festival in Rock Island.

The festival consists of students from all over Illinois, as well as various schools from Iowa. Students are selected for participation based on director nominations and playing experience.

Nine Putnam County High School students attended this two-day event.

Members of the festival’s Gold band, under the direction of guest conductor David Beans, were Kalyn Grant, clarinet; Mayra Macias, clarinet; Jentsie Petersen, alto saxophone; Arianna Rivera, alto saxophone; Mavrick Holocker, trumpet; Samantha Cirilo, trumpet; Isaac Wujek, trumpet; and Lillian Sandberg, percussion.

The festival focuses on preparing music for a finale concert after many hours of rehearsal over the two-day event.

TCOC announces 2020 scholarships Reba L. Ratliff of Oglesby turned 100 on Jan. 13. She was born in Ethel, Mo., and married William Ratliff on Dec. 23, 1939. He passed away in 1994. She has two daughters, Barb Pierson of Oglesby and Sharon (Ken) DeWitt of Granville. She also has six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

ROCK FALLS — At least 12 scholarships will be awarded by Tri-County Opportunities Council to income-eligible students residing in the agency’s service area.

The scholarships are worth up to $1,250 and have been made available by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development (DCEO) through its Community Services Block Grant funds.

Mustangs go on to win regional title

BY TOMMY ROSE Shaw Media GRANVILLE — The Yorkville Christian Mustangs extended their season one more game while ending Putnam County’s in the Feb. 26 semifinal action at the Putnam County 1A regional with a 74-43 win over the host Panthers.

Maintaining a lead throughout the game, but with the Panthers in the rear-view mirror in the first half, the Mustangs stepped on the gas in the third quarter, outscoring Putnam County 29-6 to turn a commanding lead into a decisive victory.

Yorkville Christian went on to defeat Gardner-South Wilmington, 68-47, in the regional title game on Feb. 28.

“We’re excited to play in another regional championship,” Yorkville Christian coach Aaron Sovern said.

“This was our 23rd win, and that’s the most we’ve ever had as a school, so we’ve got to keep moving forward. Survive and advance,” he said with a laugh.

The game was anybody’s in the first half with Yorkville Christian ahead in the first period, but only by three, 16-13.

A hat trick of 3-pointers by Long helped the Mustangs extend their advantage to 38-27 at halftime, but Putnam County head coach Harold Fay still thought he had a lot of game time to work with.

“I wasn’t even too discouraged with their 11-point lead at the half,” Fay said. “We were gonna play that zone and put people in spots where we could test shots.

“It worked for a while. It worked until halftime.”

The rubber hit the road for the Mustangs in the second half, however, going on a 19-0 run to find themselves with a 57-27 lead, ending the

“We were a little disappointed being up only 11 at halftime, because we had some empty possessions that we could’ve extended,” Sovern said. “So we made a couple of little adjustments, the boys came out with energy and got after it defensively, so that was good to see.”

Fay said missed opportunities cost the Panthers in the early second half.

“We had four good looks down here, and they didn’t go in,” Fay said. “And they’re the type of team that you want to make take the ball out of bounds, not rebound and play up the floor. It just got away from us.”

Putnam County ends its season at 12-20.

However, the home squad was ready, coming out fast and leading the game from wire-to-wire for an impressive 73-57 postseason victory.

“We worked on trying to stop their big three scorers, and I felt we made them work for their points,” said Putnam County coach Harold Fay.

“We stayed up on them and helped out well defensively. I was also happy the way we were patient on offense and got good shots and knocked them down, especially early.

The game began with the Panthers clamping down defensively, while a pair of 3-balls from Luke Pederson and Jacob Williams created a 6-0 lead. PC’s Stephen Mecagni rolled in a layup to stake the hosts to an 8-0 advantage with 4:30 to play in period number one.

The Mallards were finally able to answer as Griffin Self drained a 3 to break the ice. After a Pederson layup, the Mallards tightened things up further with a pair of hoops from Logan Kiesewetter and Holdyn Carr to tighten the score to 10-7.

But the Panthers fought back as freshman Jackson McDonald started his big night (a game-high 21 points) with a short jumper. Mecagni added a layup and again PC extended its lead to 14-7 with three minutes left in the first. The teams would exchange points for the rest of the quarter and the Panthers would take a 23-12 lead into the second period.

Henry scored five of the next seven points to tighten the game to 25-17 before Putnam County returned the favor with a 7-3 run of its own. That burst, capped off by a Jake Pyszka putback, gave the Panthers a 32-19 edge with four minutes to play in the half.

Henry’s Jacob Miller then began to heat up, scoring his team’s next seven points, but the Panthers kept pace with Pederson dropping in four

of his own and at the intermission, PC held a 38-26 lead.

The teams traded hoops in the early going after half before Henry went on an 8-0 run fueled by hoops from Miller and a pair from Self, cutting the deficit to 44-38 with three minutes showing in the third period.

However, the Panthers responded in kind with a 6-0 streak with McDonald accounting for four of those points. The Mallards outscored the

Panthers 4-2 to finish the quarter, but PC took a 10-point lead into the final stanza.

There, the Panthers slowly pulled away, mainly on the inside play of McDonald. When Matthew Liebhart drained a pair from the foul line with 2:30 to play, the Panthers held an insurmountable 70-50 lead.

Henry wouldn’t quit as Miller score six more points in the waning minutes to create the final score.
