Marquis Energy eyes expansion within Enterprise Zone

Ethanol producer is adding acres to business park through enterprise zone agreements KIM SHUTE kshute@shawmedia.com HENNEPIN — Marquis Energy is working with Putnam and Bureau counties to expand its appeal to employers, recently gaining board approvals to expand its business park enterprise zones.

The Bureau/Putnam Area Enterprise Zone is made up of eight local governing bodies in Bureau and Putnam counties and includes Granville, Hennepin, Mark, Ladd, Princeton, Spring Valley and some unincorporated areas of the counties of Bureau and Putnam.

Bureau and Putnam county boards, along with Spring Valley and Princeton city councils this month, approved expansion of the enterprise zones aimed at marketing Marquis as a premier location for incoming businesses. A total of 1,051 acres will be added.

Danielle Anderson, director of government affairs and public relations at Marquis, said the energy company currently has over 2,000 acres surrounding its property that is zoned industrial. She said some of those parcels are in the enterprise zone and Marquis is going through the process now to have the remaining parcels included.

The business park originated as a marine logistics center on the Illinois River in 2001. Marquis Energy broke ground in 2006 and started production two years later after CEO Mark Marquis determined the site was an ideal location for an ethanol facility. Marquis doubled its facility in 2016, becoming the largest dry-mill ethanol facility in the world.

Marquis markets the location as ideal due to access to export markets via the American inland waterway system and the Gulf Coast.

Additionally, Marquis’ railroad

trackage connects to the Norfolk Southern Railroad, which covers the Eastern Seaboard, according to marketing materials for the land.

Those who bring their business to the enterprise zone are promised nearly 100% real estate tax abatement for 10 years, 6.25% sales tax exemption for building materials, a 0.5% investment tax credit and a $500 per job credit for hiring eligible workers. Additionally, Marquis is hoping to entice corporations with Illinois’ competitive energy market and natural gas supply lines located on the property.

“We know businesses will flourish due to the many benefits our area has to offer and this will further benefit our local community,” Anderson said.

Ottawa family chosen as homeowners of the Habitat for Humanity build in Ladd

‘Our prayers were answered’ family says of selection GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com LADD — The Heath family of Ottawa received a warm welcome in Ladd on Friday at the site of their soon-to-be Habitat for Humanity home on South Iowa Avenue.

The family includes father, Justin; mother, Kayla; daughter, Hazel, and little Evelynn, due in April. The Heath family was selected from a group of applicants by a committee representing the Habitat for Humanity chapter of LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties.

Dan Fitzgerald, president of Habitat-LBPC, spoke Friday, saying there were many families to choose from who were very deserving, but it was the Heath family who best

matched the criteria.

Justin works full-time at Dohrn Transfer Company as a diesel mechanic. He has been turning wrenches his whole life and is proud of what he does. Kayla is a stay-athome mom, which was a decision she was forced to make after a car accident in October of 2018.

“Not being able to work and help provide financially, my husband bears all of the responsibility [of] making sure that we never go without,” she said in a letter when applying to be a Habitat family. “I do my best to make each place we live in a loving and happy environment.”

The Heath family heard about Habitat for Humanity from a friend after the friend heard that they had been renting different places each year to accommodate finances while growing their family. The Heaths discussed buying a home because they wanted somewhere stable for

• HABITAT their children, but they were afraid they’d never be able to reach that goal.

“We were hoping to save up so one day we could buy a family home. It seemed like no matter what we did, it just wasn’t going to happen. Challenges appeared, and one thing after another made things that much harder for us,” Kayla said.

Justin and Kayla decided to apply for the Habitat home and relied on prayers and faith that things would be alright.

“After many tears and praying and just holding on to hope, our prayers were answered. We received the visit that will forever change our lives,” Kayla said. “It’s amazing the amount of support and love that is behind a family and community. We could not have asked for a better blessing for our family. Our children will be able to grow up in a true home.”

The new Habitat home in Ladd will be located at 319 S. Iowa Ave., just blocks away from the Ladd Community Consolidated School.

The plan is to break ground on the home project as soon as the ground thaws this spring. Habitat continues to need volunteers, donations of construction material and services and funding for the project.

The residents of Ladd and Club Ladd 89 members are the true “can-do” commitment behind this Habitat project, said Sally Van Cura, executive director of Habitat-LBPC. “The Ladd build is a story of the Habitat mission as it is actually being played out in Ladd. It’s a community coming together to volunteer, fundraise, donate and provide services to make the dream of home ownership possible for a qualified family.

It’s welcoming a family and giving them a change for a safe and affordable place to call home,” she said.

Animal shelter receives $5 donation they’ll never forget TOM COLLINS tcollins@shawmedia.com

Chris Tomsha receives donations all the time for Illinois Valley Animal Rescue. Usually, it takes a pretty big number to get her to raise her eyebrows — but it was a recent donation of $5 that brought tears to her eyes.

Tomsha is executive director of IVAR, and last week she opened an envelope containing a Walmart gift card for $5. It had come from Avery Sontheimer, a 14-year-old from Corry, Pennsylvania, who’s battling a rare cancer. Avery had launched a fundraiser for animal shelters and, as word of her illness spread, donations have poured in. IVAR is one of nearly 2,900 shelters to which Avery has sent money.

“You’re one of the places I chose to help because of my passion for animals,” Avery wrote. “Thanks for everything you do.”

Tomsha had a reply for that: No, Avery, thank you.

“I started crying,” Tomsha said. “My life is pretty good right now.”

Avery launched her fundraiser, Avery’s Pawsitive Change, in March 2020 and kept at it even after a diagnosis in July: Ewing sarcoma, a cancer affecting the bones or adjoining tissue.

Before and especially after Avery’s diagnosis, people responded enthusiastically to her appeals, and she amassed an impressive $1,100 in her first three months alone.

As donations continued to arrive, Avery extended her donations across the map, and 2,862 shelters have received gift cards as of Valentine’s Day. “I love helping animals,” Avery said. “I’ve seen the need with the pandemic and so many animal shelters closing their doors, which means so many animals were not able to get a second chance. I was hoping by sending gift cards to shelters I could help just a little and also an encouraging letter because animal shelter life is not easy.”

Life hasn’t been easy for Avery, either. Her site includes updates on her 14 rounds of chemotherapy. She’s on round 12 and is hopeful.

“I am doing good,” she reported cheerfully.

“After the 14 rounds of chemo they will do scans.

I will have to either have surgery and radiation to my lungs or just radiation depending on what the scans say. My dream is to open my own shelter here in Corry. Our closest shelter is an hour away.”

She may get her wish, as donations have snowballed and she’s won accolades from animal rights groups. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals honored her with the Hero to Animals Award after she passed 2,000 gift cards and drew more than 7,000 to her fundraiser page.

“We celebrate this wonderful, selfless girl who is making the world a better place by caring for others,” wrote Michelle Feinberg, a senior writer for PETA. “Her determination and passion for helping animals make us all want to be better

Doyle: With government funding becoming increasingly difficult to secure, the membership drive has taken on greater importance than ever before Responding to the increasing number of people wanting to assist law enforcement officials and build a stronger partnership in the fight against crime, Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle has announced that Putnam County citizens are being invited to become associate members of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association.

Membership appeals go out in the mail shortly.

Individuals choosing to join the voluntary program can do so for as little as $20, while business-

es can show their support for a $50 contribution.

The funding provides critically important technical resources, training and legislative support on key criminal justice issues.

Contributions are tax-deductible, and unlike other organizations in our state, the membership program does not solicit membership by telephone.

“With government funding becoming increasingly difficult to secure, the membership drive has taken on greater importance than ever before,” said Doyle. “The funding is vital to helping us carry out our mission of making our communities safer places to live, work and play.”

The program is committed to its “no telemarketing” policy and only sends invitations to citizens to become members by mail. Individuals that do not receive a membership appeal and would like more information can visit online

CLARK H. IRVEN MAGNOLIA — Clark H. Irven, 71, of Magnolia passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, with his wife of almost 50 years and his longtime best friend at his bed side.

He was born on February 18, 1949, in Chicago to Eugene and Merry (Sonnenshine) Irven. He attended Junior Military Academy in Chicago grades 1 through 8, St. George High School in Evanston, and received his Bachelor of Science at Christian Brothers College in Memphis.

Clark married his childhood sweetheart (the girl next door), Laurel Clifton, on June 12, 1971, at St. Ignatius Church in Rogers Park.

Clark worked for the post office in Schaumburg, where he started out as a carrier and advanced to management position. He retired from the Postal Service in 2004 where he relocated to his farm in Magnolia.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Streamwood. He enjoyed

Clark loved “the country life” which included a 5:00 o’clock cocktail by the creek and rooting for the Bears and Cubs with his buddies in his man cave. Clark also enjoyed traveling to Disney World, Mexico and Hawaii. He always looked forward to spending the winter months at his Arizona home in San Tan Valley, Arizona.

Survivors include his wife, Laurel, and their beloved beagle, Maggy; he is also survived by his father, Gene O’Malley of Lakewood, Colorado; three sisters, Lynn (James) Walsh, Jeanie (Joseph) Sucec and Barbara (Mike) Riley; two brothers, Phillip (Julie) Irven and Patrick (Deb) Michaels/ White; as well as his best friend, “Jimmy” Repsold; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, maternal grandparents, his beloved paternal grandmother, Alvira; his paternal grandfather; and a stepsister.

Cremation rites were accorded on Ash Wednesday. Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements.

A celebration of life is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 12, 2021, on the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary.

HENRY — Students from three local high schools were honored this month by the Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR as DAR Good Citizens.

In the past two years, Good Citizens students, parents and school personnel were invited to a tea and program, but with COVID restrictions in effect this year, Good Citizens Chapter Chair Diana Williamson called on the students at their respective schools to extend chapter congratulations and recognition. Each received a certificate, a wallet card designating them as a DAR Good Citizens and a pin.

All students also received a U.S. flag magnet, created by member Nancy Gillfillan.

Honored by Putnam County High School and the Chief Senachwine DAR Chapter was Emma Edens, the daughter of Eric and Michelle Edens of McNabb.

Good Citizens recipients are selected by their peers and faculty on the basis of dependability (truthfulness, honesty, punctuality), service (cooperation, helpfulness, responsibility), leadership (personality, self-control, initiative) and patriotism (unselfish loyalty to American ideals).

Emma’s activities include Interact Service Organization Club, National Honor Society (currently president), Girls’ State nominee, Sportsmanship award, library assistant, Handbook Emma Edens Committee member, Peer Tutor, nominee of the Oglesby Elks Teen of the Month and participant in Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Competition. She plans to attend college and become a nutritionist.

Other honorees within the Chief Senachwine Chapter area were Keil Endress, the son of Nicholas and Kimberly Endress of Lacon, and Erin Hufnagle, the daughter of Greg and Tara Hufnagle of Henry. Keil and Erin were selected as Good Citizens from Midland and Henry-Senachwine high schools respectively.

Students vying for the Good Citizens contest complete forms about their school and community activities. In addition, they are invited to

write an essay. The title for 2020 was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.” The focus question was “How do the combined actions of so many good citizens keep our nation moving forward?”

A winning student application and essay are forwarded to district competition. From the seven DAR districts in Illinois, two outstanding applicants are chosen from the female

and male students. Monetary awards are provided at the state level. State winners advance to national competition where monetary amounts are also awarded.

The Chief Senachwine Chapter feels that the Good Citizens program is an excellent way to honor outstanding students and their families and express appreciation for their accomplishments.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Lady Panthers beat Wethersfield, Henry Three players scored in double figures Saturday as the Putnam County girls basketball team earned a 49-23 victory over Wethersfield in a non-conference game in Kewanee. Sophia Harris scored 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers, while Caitlyn Cioni had 11 points and three steals and Ava Hatton added 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists.

PC 48, Henry 46 The Lady Panthers held off Henry for a 48-46 win on Feb. 25. Harris had 18 points, four rebounds and one block; Cioni had 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals; Hatton had nine points and five rebounds; and Chloe Linton had a team-high 13 rebounds with four points.

GRANVILLE — More than two weeks ago, in their first meeting the season, the Seneca boys basketball team used a fourth-quarter rally to beat visiting Putnam County by five points.

In Saturday afternoon’s rematch at R.M. Germano Gymnasium the Panthers, who didn’t shoot well from the field Feb. 12 against the Fighting Irish, made good on 50% of their attempts, including 10 of 18 [63%] from beyond the arc.

Putnam County didn’t allow the visitors a second comeback, and despite seeing a 17-point lead sliced to nine in the final minutes the Panthers held on for a 54-45 Tri-County Conference victory over the Fighting Irish. PC improved to 7-4 overall and in the conference and Seneca fell to 6-5 in both.

“We’ve been in a little bit of a funk lately, and we haven’t been playing very well but for whatever reason we came in here this afternoon recharged,” said Putnam County coach Harold Fay. “We played hard for 32 minutes.

“In transition, both offensively and defensively, we sprinted instead of jogging. We still aren’t diving on the floor for loose balls like I’d like us to, and I’m a little disappointed with how we finished, but overall I was happy with how we played today.

“We really haven’t shot the ball to our capabilities all season, to be honest. We have been getting open shots, but we just haven’t been able to knock them down on a consistent basis. We did that today.”

Luke Pederson hit three 3-pointers in the first half and netted 13 of his 15 points in the first 16 minutes to help stake the Panthers to a 33-17 halftime lead. Panthers’ sophomore Jackson McDonald, who made three 3s, scored seven of his game-high 17 points in the second quarter for PC. Nick Mattern added four points and Andrew Pyszka [team-high six rebounds] scored three of his eight points in the game on one of his two 3s as PC outscored the Irish 22-8 in the frame. “[Putnam County] shot the ball extremely well today overall and knocked down 10 3s. We haven’t given up that many 3s in a game since Marquette in our second game of this season,” said Seneca coach Russell Witte, who’s team shot only 33% from the floor and 5 of 21 from deep.

“We tried to do a couple of things in our zone defense differently kind of on the fly, than in our first meeting. That first game they were setting back screens on the weak side and skipping the ball over the top.

We tried to counter that today, but Harold did a good job of adjusting to what we were trying to do by going four-low and putting shooters in each corner.

“Like I told the kids after the game, when you give good shooters like No. 2 [Pederson] open shots and they see the ball go through the hoop that comfortably early, then it’s game on the rest of the game. I thought we did a much better job in the second half closing out on shooters. Our energy was pretty good, but they were still able to score all but one of their baskets from beyond the arc.

“In the first game against Putnam County at our place, they didn’t shoot well. We did the same thing here at theirs.”

“We played good defense today,” Fay said. “It’s all about the effort, and we have been really preaching

to the kids about giving all they can every minute on the court. It’s been a crazy season and with no postseason to really play for we are just trying to find motivation in other things. Really, that motivation is playing hard and the best we can each game.”

LaSalle-Peru’s shooting, energy best Panthers, McDonald CHARLIE ELLERBROCK cellerbrock@shawmedia.com LASALLE — Putnam County boys basketball coach Harold Fay knew that if his 1A Panthers didn’t play pretty well against 3A LaSalle-Peru on the Cavaliers’ home floor Thursday night, it could potentially be a long night for his Panthers.

When the Cavaliers’ Michael Jereb hit the first 3-pointer 1:21 into the game and Drake Weber soon followed with two more bombs from beyond the arc, a longer night for the visitors seemed a little more certain.

However, when the Cavs’ had two guys come off the bench to hit three 3s in a single quarter, they needed a calendar to count the minutes as L-P earned a 68-54 victory.

Weber, who on Monday night against Sandwich passed the 1,000-

point threshold, connected on two of his five 3s as L-P claimed a commanding 19-6 lead late in the first quarter, and reserve Ozzie Hernandez connected on three treys in a 23-10 second period that boosted that Cavs edge to 44-20 at the half.

Backup Joe Pohar later capped the hosts’ big night from the arc with three more bombs in the final period to close out the victory.

Weber ended with five 3s and 17 points to pace the Cavaliers, who drained 8-of-14 from the arc while shooting a sizzling 60.7% on their way to that halftime lead and ended up connecting on 13-of-31 (41.9%) from the 3-point line on the night.

Panthers sophomore Jackson McDonald took game scoring honors with 24 points, 12 in the third quarter and 16 in the latter half when PC (7-4) fought its way back to the respectable score.

However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the perimeter barrage and an efficient and aggressive offense from a tired yet energized home club (7-3).

“Coming off two really tough

road wins (at Sandwich, Plano), we’d love to go 3-0 for the week,” said L-P coach Jim Cherveny. “But to do that, we have to play with discipline, we have to play with teamwork and we have to play with good communication. In the first half tonight, I thought our discipline was great, we really worked together teamwork-wise, moving the ball around to find the open shooters, and we got them the ball.

We shot the ball well tonight right at the start and the defense just picked it up from there.

“One of our other goals is to play fast as a team. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing, we want to get the ball up the floor as quick as we can and I thought we looked fast tonight. That’s a credit to the guys after the late nights we’ve had this week. They brought the energy.”

Weber’s eight points and six from Tyler Hartman opened up that first-period lead before Hernandez’s trio of treys in the second ignited the L-P bench. McDonald’s big third stanza only closed the gap to 22 points heading to the fourth.

But there, Pohar’s three triples

helped offset Matt Liebhart’s nine points, with the last seven of those coming in the final 1:31 to get Putnam County as close as the final score.

“I’ve been pointing to the fact to the kids that they’ve got to get back, get ahead of everything and then filter back and find your guys,” said Fay of L-P’s controlled push on each possession. “Beside the fact that they were shooting so well, we gave them too many second chances ... But when a team shoots like that, it’s going to be a long night.

“I don’t know if coming in here he might have been a little intimidated, but once we got into it and he relaxed, (McDonald) did a better job … But the kids worked hard.

It was a 20-point game at halftime and we could have hung our heads, but we didn’t. I know we weren’t going against their horses at the end, but the kids still went after it and I’m proud of that.”
