Superintendent says emergency notification system proves its worth

BY BECKY KRAMER Shaw Media GRANVILLE — The Illinois Valley is losing at least two school administrators this year.

Current Putnam County Primary School Principal Ronda Cross will be leaving her current position in mid-June, said Superintendent Carl Carlson.

Carlson said Cross has been principal at the primary school for eight years, and she will be relocating with her husband, Mark Cross, who is currently superintendent of Peru Elementary District.

Earlier this winter, the school board at Cass School District 73 approved Cross as the next superintendent of a grade school district in the west-suburban Chicago communities of Darien and Hinsdale.

Tuesday night, the Putnam County School board hired Chawn Huffaker to be the district’s primary school principal.

He is currently principal at Allen Junior High School in LaMoille and Van Orin Grade School. Huffaker’s salary at Putnam County will be roughly $74,000, and he will start his new position Aug. 1, said Carlson.

Putnam County’s district had 20 applicants apply for the principal position, and then eight applicants were interviewed. Four candidates were narrowed down, and Huffaker was the best candidate chosen by the staff and administration, Carlson said.

The board also hired Cambria Robinson as a new speech pathologist; accepted resignations from Carrie Damekas, preschool special education teacher, Jennifer Dudek as science fair sponsor, Brandi LeQuia as sophomore class sponsor; and accepted maternity leave for Susan Sale, high school paraprofessional.

Carlson shared with board members Tuesday a recent weather issue that affected a bus route during a snowfall Feb. 12.

At about 4 p.m. Carlson was notified the pre-K bus was stuck on Spotted Dutchman’s Hill due to snow-covered roads.

“The bus remained on the road but as it tried to climb the curved areas it began to slide toward the ravine side of the road,” Carlson said. “It

Carlson sent out updated alerts through the notification system.

Parents were advised not to come pick up their children in order to allow the crews to place salt and cinders on the road. Carlson told the board that this type of situation reaffirms the district’s acquisition of the notification service as being extremely valuable.

The weather continued to affect the roads the following day but Carlson applauded the road crews that were already out taking care of the roads when he was checking road conditions at 5 a.m.

Carlson said, “While the roads were not great due to the winter conditions, they were able to be traveled with precautionary measures being taken. I wanted to tip our hats to those crews for their work because it very likely saved our district from taking a snow day.”

Safety Committee meeting A School Safety Committee meeting was held prior to the regular meeting Tuesday night; the committee discussed the hiring of a school resource officer. Carlson will post the position and a detailed job description will be created.

The committee also heard an update concerning the entryway work that will be done at the junior high and high school to create a secure vestibule area. Quotes are being solidified.

Board member Emily Chiado shared information with the committee concerning cyber safety and cyber bullying that she heard during the Triple I Conference. Carlson will look into whether the same presenter would be available to present to the PC staff members.

In other news: • Twenty-six people attended a recent phase I strategic planning session where the strengths and weaknesses of the school district were discussed. On Feb. 29 there will be a second meeting to continue the discussion and devise a plan concerning the facility, curriculum and finances. Carlson said that he believes this is a good process.

• Annette Davis updated the board on the 2020 Illinois State Library Grant, which she applied for in October. Davis was notified in December that the district was receiving $750.

• Coach Jerry Kriewald addressed the board about the wrestling program. Sophomore Connor Brooker is the first Putnam County student to qualify for state, which Kriewald said was an indication that the junior high wrestling program is working. Kriewald would like the board to think about finding a place for the wrestling program to be housed. Currently they are using the media center and it takes 20 minutes to set up and 20 minutes to clean up every day.

• The board heard an investment report presented by Carlson. A Certificate of Deposit was ready for renewal and the best interest rate was from First State Bank at 1.81 percent for 36 months.

Carlson said, “This is down from the recent interest rates that were over 2 percent. However, with uncertainty in futures, the recommendation is to lock in this rate for a longer term. The shorter term rates were much lower and getting at least close to 2 percent is much better than the less than 1 percent we were receiving three years ago.”

Carlson said that the state of Illinois is up to date on their payments and the school should receive their next categorical payment in the next few weeks.

Pedestrian bridge to link village, vast preserve Hennepin mayor hopes to attract tourists, families, hikers and cyclists

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media HENNEPIN — The Dixon Waterfowl Refuge has made Hennepin a popular destination for birdwatchers, anglers and hikers.

Hennepin could become a bicyclists destination, too, whenever a prefabricated bridge over Coffee Creek is finally put into place to link the village to the Marquis Oak Ridge Trail — the first bicycle-friendly trail at the refuge.

Part of the trail along the north side of the refuge parallels Coffee Creek.

When the bridge goes in, it can create a loop including the village and refuge, one village official hopes.

When the village of Hennepin widened High Street, it became better for bicyclists and pedestrians.

High Street is the main road that leads from Route 26 directly into town and toward the riverfront, courthouse and parks. There’s a parking lot for the Marquis trail to the south of Coffee Creek and west of Route 26.

He said he hopes bids can be let and the bridge can be installed this spring.

lands Initiative, which manages the preserve, noted there is not a bike lane on Route 26. He does, however, like the idea of providing a bicycling link between the village and the trail at the north edge of the preserve.

Botts said naturalists and others at TWI had some concerns about allowing bicycles into the preserve,

but if they stay strictly on the trail, it would be a win-win for the village and the project. He said one of The Wetlands Initiative’s goals in the past couple of years has been to attract more visitors to appreciate and understand the nature restoration efforts that are happening south of Hennepin.

TWI and the village have worked out an understanding for the village to install the bridge on TWI property and then allow TWI to use it.

The 2.7-mile Marquis Oak Ridge Trail leads through rich, restored wetland, prairie, and savanna habitats at the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge,

according to The Wetlands Initiative, which is varied types of habitat at the refuge.

A $100,000 grant from Marquis Energy, LLC, of Hennepin made the 2.7-mile trail’s construction possible. Additional funding from Dr. Scholl Foundation, Dynegy Henne-

pin Power Station and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Illinois Wildlife Preservation Fund supported completion of the trail amenities and signage over the past two years, along with contributions from individual donors to The Wetlands Initiative, according to TWI.

PUTNAM — John William Yates Jr., 69, of Lake Thunderbird, Putnam, passed away at 6:35 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, at his home.

John was born Jan. 23, 1951, in South Charleston, W.Va., to John William and Phyllis (Drake) Yates Sr. John retired from Georgia Pacific after 30 years of service. He was an accomplished self-taught guitar player who loved to sing and entertain family members and friends with hours of beautiful music. He was also an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, with experiences that were the genesis of many a great tale! John was a master at family storytelling, with a quick wit who could write so prolifically, one thought they were there. An opinionated thinker who was wellread, and ready to speak and debate any subject. His personality was magnetic, with an infectious laugh. His family has lost a giant of a man … fly high John.

Surviving are his children, Kimberley (Stephen) DeTombe of Taylor Ridge, Cassandra Yates of Johnsburg and Bryan (Laura) Yates of Elmhurst; five grandchildren, Rheise, Troy, Eden, Ella and Parker; and four sisters, Beverly (Donald) Stamper of East Bank W.Va., Miriam (Rick) Thornton of Charleston, W.Va., Sally Yates of Cross Lanes, W.Va., and Tammy Watson of Ripley, W.Va. Cremation rites have been accorded and a celebration of his life will be held in West Virginia this summer.

Memorials may be directed to the West Virginia University Mountaineer Athletic Club fund or donations can be directed to Calvert & Johnson Memorial Home in Henry for the celebration of life, which will be held in June.

HENNEPIN — Michael “Mike” J. Larkin, 77, of Hennepin passed away on Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, at his residence.

Mike was born on Dec. 5, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Charles and Lillian (Haun) Larkin. He married Linda Naumann on Jan. 16, 1965, in Spring Valley.

He graduated from Hall High School. Mike worked for A.D.M. Grain Elevator as a laborer in the scale house for 42 years. He was a former EMT for Putnam County.

He was an avid sports fan, and he was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Larkin of Hennepin; one son, Scott (Gina) Larkin of Williamsville; one daughter, Tracy Larkin of Nashville, Tenn.; one brother, Dan (Pam) Larkin of Anderson, S.C.; one sister, Pat (John) Coyer of Indiana; and two grandchildren, Claire Larkin and William Larkin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be a private service. Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the donor’s choice.

A 40-year-old Granville man died early Sunday in a snowmobile accident in Iron County in northern Wisconsin.

According to the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Ryan Kramarsic’s snowmobile went off a trail near Mercer and struck a tree.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at 12:53 a.m. Sunday. Emergency personnel who arrived at the scene attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful, according to the sheriff’s office. The county coroner pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Iron County Sheriff’s Office and a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warden are investigating the cause of the crash.

Two other snowmobile accident fatalities involving Illinois residents also were reported Saturday in nearby Vilas County, one near St. Germain and another near Plum Lake, according to press reports.

In addition to Iron County Sheriff’s deputies, Mercer Area Ambulance and Rescue and Mercer Fire Department’s snowmobile rescue unit responded.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Burgess Funeral Home.

County board approves changes at Monday meeting

visions for cannabis growers and/or dispensaries.

take place within industrial or agriculture zones only.

Cannabis -related bus ines s es also would need to be approved by means of a special use permit issued by the board.

All cannabis-related business will be prohibited in residential and conservation areas.

Currently, Mid-American Growers, formerly ColorPoint in rural Granville, is in the process of applying for a craft g rowers

license in order to add cannabis to its hemp-growing facility. Those licenses are expected to be issued by the state in July.

County Board Chairman Steve Malavolti said after the meeting that the county is in a unique position of having an existing operation applying for a cannabis license, but doesn’t think there’s any reason to believe there will be a large number of other entities looking to come to the area.

Anyone wishing to vote absentee in person may stop by the county clerk’s office between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The county clerk’s office will also be open on Saturday, March 14, for in-person absentee voting from 9 a.m. to noon.

The last day for in-person absentee voting is Monday, March 16, during regular office hours.

New director will lead transportation agency

Amber Biddix begins new role at BPART PRINCETON — Bureau Putnam Area Rural Transit (BPART) has a new director of transportation leading its program.

Amber Biddix, who had been employed at Gateway Services for 10 years, assumed the position on Feb. 3.

Biddix first began at Gateway as a direct support professional. She

then worked as a team supervisor in the Princeton day program location before being selected as quality assurance coordinator in July 2017.

“In her 10 years of Amber service, Amber has Biddix learned the history and all aspects of the services and support provided by Gateway and has made numerous community connections that will prove valuable in her new position,” Tracy Wright,

CEO of Gateway Services, said.

“As the quality assurance coordinator, Amber quickly learned the DHS rules and regulations and how to apply those to each program we offer,” Wright said.

“She has been responsible for all quality aspects of our committees, case records and documentation and ensuring rules and standards are met. Amber was also critical to our success in our April 2018 accreditation with the Council on Quality and Leadership as she provided extensive training and guidance to

all of us. She will be a tremendous asset to the continually growing BPART program,” Wright said.

BPART is the public transportation system for Bureau and Putnam counties and consists of Gateway Services as the lead administrator and partners St. Margaret’s Hospital, Putnam County Senior Center and Bureau County Senior Center.

OGLESBY — The retirements of longtime electronics instructor Jim Gibson of Hennepin and truck driver training program coordinator Bruce Hartman of Sandwich were announced at the Feb. 13 meeting of the Illinois Valley Community College Board of Trustees.

For 26 years, Gibson taught electricity, electronics and renewable energy and created the apprenticeship program with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

“Jim has had a monumental impact on our college and students in the trades,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said.

“He facilitated the electrician’s apprenticeship with the IBEW and was critically important to the success of our Making Industry Meaningful in College (MIMIC) program and our National Science Foundation grants,” Corcoran said.

Gibson, who will retire officially July 31, wrote in his retirement letter, “Thank you for all the wonderful support over the years. The programs are in much better shape than when I was hired all those years ago.”

More than 2,500 drivers have completed IVCC’s truck driver training program since it opened under Hartman’s lead in 2000. Hartman, who will retire May 1, said, “We’ve helped so many people improve their family situation with careers in trucking.”

Corcoran praised Hartman, saying, “Bruce has been the ‘face’ of our program.”

• College and Career Start program tuition reductions. Students enrolled in IVCC courses taught at high schools by high school instructors, will pay just $30 per course.

Board members learned: • The annual Academic Challenge Feb. 7 attracted 11 high schools and 217 students to compete in two 40-minute exams in biolog y, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, mathematics or physics.

Competing high schools were L-P, Streator, Ottawa, Hall, Mendota, Seneca, St. Bede, Midland, LaMoille, Putnam County and Marquette. Firstand second-place teams from the three divisions advance to the Eureka College Sectional March 13.

• Of 53 IVCC RN students taking the NCLEX state board exam, 48 passed on the first attempt for a 91 percent pass rate compared to the national and state averages of 88 percent. The five students who did not pass the first attempt, passed on the second. Of 12 LPN students, 10 passed on the first attempt for an 83 percent pass rate compared to national and state averages of 86 and 89 percent. The two who did not pass were successful the second time.

• A recent agreement allows IVCC ag students to transfer seamlessly to the ag program at Illinois State University. The articulation allows students with AAS degrees in agronomy and agribusiness to pursue ISU bachelor’s degrees in agriculture.

• Total budget for 42 student organizations was $102,914 in 2019-20, down from $112,604 in 2018-19 and $129,689 in 2017-18.

• Part-time theater and speech instructor Donna Stone retired and assistant volleyball coach Mariela Bima resigned.

• IVCC’s Chem Club, led by faculty advisers Matthew Johll and Richard “Larry” Ault, earned the American Chemical Society’s top award for 2018-19. Of 380 chapters submitting reports, IVCC was one of just 59 designated “Outstanding.”

• The American Red Cross commended the college’s new Rotaract Club for leading a Jan. 23 blood drive that collected 48 units.

• There were 153 fall graduates earning 178 degrees and certificates compared to 165 earning 186 degrees in fall 2018.

• The college added $12,157 in course scheduling consulting work from RSM US LLP. RSM enables the college to make better use of its resources by identifying trends in course enrollments.

Upcoming library programs announced

The Putnam County Library District has announced upcoming events for March.

Hennepin • Thursday, March 5 — “Dr. Seuss is on the Loose: The life of Theodor Seuss Geisel.” Historian Jim Gibbons will present the life of Theodor Seuss Geisel, whose life was not boring, not even a trifle. Participants can hear about “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “If I ran the Zoo,” “Ten Apples up on Top” and more.

• Thursday, March 12 — Tricia Kelly, back after October’s terrifying Lizzie Borden program, will present “Irish Ghost Stories” at 6:30 p.m. Her stories are all original pieces, handwritten using paper and fountain pen. Some stories are quite scary.

• Every Thursday — Story time is presented at 3:30 p.m. for children ages 2 to 5.

• During library hours — Starting in Hennepin this spring, students are welcome to work on homework at the library during library hours.

Granville • Mondays, March 2 and 16 — The book discussion group will meet at 1 p.m. The meetings are group directed and there is no assigned book to read. Members are encouraged to share their own insights, opinions and views, and make recommendations. The group meets the first and third Monday of every month. • Tuesday, March 7 — A St. Patrick’s Day craft time, where participants can make a Marshmallow Shamrock Stamping and a leprechaun craft with a fork bear, will be at 10 a.m.

• Tuesday, March 10 — Kids will have the opportunity to explore STEM activities through handson activities during a Sphero & Makey Makey event. This is part of the IEEE Chicago Section Grant.

• Tuesday, March 24 — “Dead People of Illinois” will be presented from 6 to 7 p.m. by John Lynn. This “underground” presentation explores hundreds of Illinois cemeteries to find interesting graves and headstones, intriguing lives and deaths, and lots and plots of funny names.

• Every Tuesday — A preschool story time will be at 11 a.m. for children ages 2 to 5. There will be stories, crafts, activities and more.

• Every Thursday — Wee Ones, 30 minutes of stories and songs ideal for little ones under 3 years of age, will be at 10 a.m.

Putnam • Saturday, March 7 — Books and Brunch will be from 9 a.m. to noon. This monthly gathering, held the first Saturday of the month, is a time to enjoy coffee and a light breakfast with fellow readers.

• Tuesday, March 17 — A St. Patrick’s Day tradition of Irish soda bread will be available to taste at 2:30 p.m. at the library.

Magnolia • Saturday, March 7 — A story hour will be at 10 a.m.

• Tuesday, March 10 — Historian Jim Gibbons will present “The Story of Anne Frank,” a young

girl of faith, hope, relentless spirit and wisdom beyond her years. Her story, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” has been read by millions throughout the world and transcribed into 67 different languages.

Anne’s diary was turned into major stage productions, won the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and became a 1950s movie that won three Academy Awards.

• Thursdays, March 12 and 26 — Freedom House will be doing children programs on topics about feelings, being unique and self-esteem from 4 to 5 p.m.

• Tuesday, March 17 — St. Patrick’s Day treat will be available at the library at 4 p.m.

• Saturday, March 19 — Hands-on experiments will be done at 4 p.m.

• Saturday, March 21 — Participants can build with LEGOs at 10:30 a.m.

Standard • Tuesday, March 31 — “From Prairie to Farm to City: Illinois history through music” will be presented at 1:30 p.m. This is an Illinois Humanities funded program. Originally developed to commemorate Illinois’ bicentennial, the program of music reflects the story of Illinois, which is shaped not only by the land (prairie, Great Lakes, Mississippi River), but also by the many cultures that have thrived in it, beginning with Native Americans, and including French, German, African-Americans, Mexican and other immigrant groups. The program includes songs about farmers, workers and labor struggles, as well as disasters and tragedies. Showcasing even a little blues and rock and roll, the program is an informative and entertaining look at Illinois, its history and its people. Few musicians play the hammered dulcimer. Stage 212 will present ‘Cocktails & Classics: Swingin’ to the Golden Oldies!’

LASALLE — Stage 212 is kicking off a new benefit concert series, “212 Sings,” with “Cocktails & Classics: Swingin’ to the Golden Oldies!”

The ’50s and ’60s were filled with the new sound of rock and roll, the cool beat of Motown and the sweet harmonies of the girl groups. “Cocktails & Classics” takes a tour of the songs made famous on American Bandstand and played repeatedly on jukeboxes in diners across the country.

Pam Lange will speak on Lovejoy Homestead PRINCETON — The Bureau County Genealogical Society will meet for its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Society library, located at 629 S. Main St. in Princeton. The speaker for the evening will be Pam Lange of Princeton.

Lange is highly knowledgeable about Bureau County history, having been the executive director for the last 15 years of her 25 years working at the Bureau County Historical Society. While in college, she wrote her master’s thesis on Owen Lovejoy, the well-known “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, minister and congressman from Illinois.

Lange has also been a member of the Lovejoy Homestead Board of Trustees for 27 years. Her presentation

will focus on the Lovejoy Homestead, located on the east edge of Princeton, which is a public museum at this time. She will talk about the Denham and Lovejoy families who occupied the home for almost 100 years, and the Underground Railroad, which was a part of Bureau County’s history.

Lange has recently updated a 1949 booklet on the history of the homestead with more information on the family and an update of its history since the first printing. Copies will be available for purchase at the meeting. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Anyone wanting further information about the program may call the BCGS library at 815-879-3133 during regular hours of operation, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The library is also open those same hours the first Saturday of each month especially for those who cannot research during the work week, but anyone is welcome to research on Saturdays as well.

The Expansion and Review Committee is made up of youths and adults who look at the county 4-H program’s enrollment trends and participation data. BOYS BASKETBALL: PUTNAM COUNTY 55, ST. BEDE 51

BY BRAD MARTIN SR. Shaw Media GRANVILLE — It was a hardfought battle among rivals Feb. 18, and in the end, the Putnam County boys basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to come away with a 55-51 victory over St. Bede in non-conference action.

The Bruins led 44-41 going into the final eight minutes, and after the Panthers split a couple of free throws, Jakob Pyszka drove to the hoop and tied the game at 44-44.

Gunnar Jauch then put the Bruins back up with a 3-pointer, but over the next few possessions, Luke Pederson hit a 3-pointer for Putnam County and then drove the baseline for a bucket to put the Panthers ahead 50-49.

Throughout the night, the teams were physical with each other but were allowed to play on, but on a 3-point attempt, Paul Hart was able to draw contact and hit 2-of-3 from the line for a 51-50 edge for the Bruins.

“Pederson had a big game for Putnam County,” St. Bede coach Brian Hanson said.

“Gunnar Jauch hit some big threes for us, but I don’t get all the contact. I’m told (Hart) is drawing the contact, but nothing is called either way. It’s very frustrating at times.”

With 38.3 seconds left, Pyszka missed a 3-pointer, but St. Bede knocked the ball out of bounds.

The Panthers took advantage of the extra possession as Pederson again drained a shot behind the arc for a 53-51 lead.

After a St. Bede timeout, Luke Story got the ball deep in the corner but was unable to hit the shot, and Pederson then iced the game with a pair of free throws for a 55-51 victory.

“Heck of a basketball game,” Hanson said. “Just frustrating. Very frustrating. We’re young, and we need to learn to close out games, and that’s on me. I have to come up with a way to teach them that.”

With the score tied at 2-2 early, Jacob Williams hit a long-range shot to put Putnam County ahead 5-2.

Hart then battled for position down low in the paint and was able to get the ball through three defend-

ers for a layup to cut St. Bede’s deficit to 7-6.

Jackson McDonald used a pump fake to drive around Bruin defenders for an 11-6 PC lead.

Jauch drained his first 3-pointer of the night to make it 11-9 in favor of the Panthers heading into the second quarter.

Once again, Hart battled through triple teams and tied the game at 11-11, but McDonald, who also had a solid night for the Panthers, showed poise in the paint before adding a strong drive to the hoop the next time down the court to give Putnam County a 17-13 lead.

The Panthers finished a 10-2 run with a drive to the hoop from Pyszka, but the Bruins finished off the half strong with Hart hitting a 3-pointer to jump-start St. Bede before Jauch and Story stepped behind the arc for 3-pointers as well to give the Bruins a 22-21 lead.

Pederson briefly gave the lead back to the Panthers with a 3-pointer, but a basket and free throw from Hart helped the Bruins take a 25-24 halftime lead.

In the third, Hart grabbed another of his game-high 17 rebounds and got

the putback for a 27-24 advantage.

Jacob Wiesbrock then tied the game with a 3-pointer.

The next two times down the floor, Hart had a putback and then a stepback 3-pointer to put St. Bede ahead 32-27.

The Panthers came roaring back with Pederson hitting another 3-pointer before a putback from Mathew Liebhart tied the game.

The Panthers took the lead on yet another shot from downtown by Pederson.

Nathan Potthoff got an old-fashioned 3-point play and the Bruins took the lead at 38-37 on a 3-pointer from Jauch.

The seesaw affair continued with a pair of free throws from Liebhart to put Putnam County ahead 41-39.

The Bruins bounced right back with a Hart putback before a 25-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer that put St. Bede ahead 44-41 heading into the fourth.

Putnam County was led by Pederson with 22 points, while Liebhart added 10 points and 11 boards.

Hart led all scorers with 28 points and 17 rebounds to go along with 13 points from Jauch.

PUTNAM COUNTY JUNIOR HIGH SOCCER CLUB U14

Successful season for junior high soccer club

Team claims title for its division over Barb City The Putnam County Junior High Soccer Club U14 team finished the first winter indoor league session in DeKalb with a record of 7-1-1. On Saturday, Jan. 25, they defeated Barb City 6-5 to claim the firstplace title for their division.

The Putnam County Soccer Club was started in 2018 by a group of parents who wanted to bring soccer to the Putnam County area. The team participates in the DeKalb Park District’s winter league from October to April. They also compete in local leagues throughout the year and have been winning championships.

With the help of the Putnam County School District, they have been able to use the school facilities to hold indoor practices. Joey Twardowski’s Eagle Scout project of placing soccer goals at the high school has enabled them to practice during the warmer months.

The club’s ultimate goal is to establish a soccer team within the Putnam County school system. The club has expanded from 10 Putnam County students to more than 40 since adding a program to include a program for K-5 kids. They are hoping to add more teams in the future.
