Chicagoan Melvin Jones was soon to step aside from his prosperous insurance business, and he used his inspiration to devote himself solely to the development of the Lions Club and the betterment of others.

“You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else,” Jones said.

With that humanitarian spirit in mind, Lions Club International would like to establish itself locally in Putnam County.

“Membership offers fellowship with people in the communi-

ties and being part of an organization that’s international. It’s a group of people wanting to help and give back to their communities. It enhances the ability to assist people in need and introduce new projects to their communities,” Lion Pat Gaffney said.

Gaffney said members are caring people who want to be able to help those in need, saying they can be family, young adults, people you work with, friends, and former Leo Club members.

The Leos are a Lions-affiliated club for younger members, typically in high school, and they not only help with regular projects, but also engage in their own

community improvement work.

Whether locally, within their district or state, or around the world, the club with more than a million members, 46,000 clubs and located in more than 200 countries, helps people with vision and eye glasses needs, hearing aids, community hunger, diabetes, environmental and hunger relief, and pediatric cancer.

Their most wellknown work involves sight-related assistance, and although they were moving in this direction from their creation, the Lions’ connection with Helen Keller inspired them toward even greater help.

Winter program Sunday features decoys, calls, hunting in Illinois

OGLESBY — A cooperative program on conservation and soil health will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the University of Illinois Extension on the Illinois Valley Community College campus, Room CTC 124.

University of Illinois Extension, Soil Health Partnership, Illinois Department of Agriculture and USDA/NRCS are co-sponsoring the program.

Electronics collection guaranteed in county At least one joint event will be held

have 20 people. If they don’t have that, they can start a branch club with another active Lions Club, for which they need eight people. They don’t meet with the branch club, so much as get help and guidance. At the time they have 20 members, they can charter their own club,� Gaffney said.

Tonya Frasco and Mother’s on McCoy revive popular menu and more GRANVILLE — Tonya Frasco has a lifetime of experience in the hospitality industry. The previous owner of Coneheads Cafe has since combined everything she’s learned with multiple establishments to open Granville’s newest destination, Mother’s on McCoy. “It was finally time to put food and drinks together,” she said of Mother’s offerings.

For those who’ve missed eating at Coneheads, Frasco has good news.

“We’ll be serving everything that was there, more than 20 items, plus much more,” she said, stressing that pizza, a fan favorite, was among the first menu items to be relaunched.

Frasco’s knowledge of the business has taught her that customers are looking for “good food at affordable prices.”

Mother’s on McCoy, at 304 S. McCoy St., opened on Jan. 24 after

what Frasco described as “a long, grueling three weeks of 19-hour days” to prepare her new venture for patrons.

Saying her biggest challenge so far has been staying awake, Frasco, with help from her twin daughters who also inspired the name, is up to the challenge of providing an entertaining destination.

Starting with an essentially empty building, she quickly added darts and two 55-inch televisions for entertainment. Gaming machines are on the way as well, and Frasco also hinted at the possibility of an outdoor seating area.

While drinks and entertainment are important components of Mother’s on McCoy, it’s the menu of which Frasco is most proud.

“Our pizza crust and sauce are both homemade and so is our wrap sauce, pasta and barbecue. We also roast our PCR photo/Dave Cook gyro meat on a spit,” she said.

OBITUARY DELORES SHEVOKAS GRANVILLE — Delores J. Shevokas, 83, of Granville passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.

Delores was born April 14, 1934, in Spring Valley to Joseph and Severina “Jean” (Cavatorta) Ellena.

She married Stanley Shevokas Jr. on Oct. 18, 1952, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville.

Delores graduated from Hopkins High School. She was a homemaker and helped her husband with the farming. She had previously worked at Hobbs and Bassick’s in Spring Valley. She was also a telephone operator for Granville and Hennepin.

Delores loved working outdoors and was a garden enthusiast. She also enjoyed going to garage sales, farm shows and various vacation spots.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley Shevokas Jr. of Granville; one son, Stanley Joseph (Patty) Shevokas III of Hennepin; one daughter, Susan (Floyd) Holocker

of Granville; one brother, Joseph (Shirley) Ellena of Standard; six grandchildren, Aaron, Erica, Floyd “BJ”, Elizabeth, Amanda and Stan IV; two stepgrandchildren, Ben and Brianna; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Feb. 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Granville.

Visitation was held Friday at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville.

Pallbearers were Aaron Holocker, BJ Holocker, Russell Shevokas, Bobby Ellena, Steve Pokinghorne and Stan Shevokas IV. Contributions may be made to Putnam County Community Center in Standard or the Standard Fire-Rescue Department.

County clerk shares early primary voting information HENNEPIN — Putnam County Clerk Dan Kuhn announces that early voting in the March 20 general primary election for registered voters in all Putnam County precincts, pursuant to election law, will take place at his office at the Putnam County Courthouse at 120 N. Fourth St. Early voting began Feb. 8 and will continue through Monday, March 19, on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and also on Saturday, March 17, from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

Kuhn said any voter who is a valid

registrant in Putnam County may vote during the early voting period after showing proper identification.

“However, any vote cast is final and may not be revoked,” Kuhn said. “As a result, the early voter is not eligible to cast a vote on Election Day.” Kuhn invited people with any questions or who would like further information on early voting to contact his office at 815-925-7129.

Kuhn noted the voter registration deadline of Tuesday, Feb. 20, for people wishing to vote in the March 20 primary.

BUREAU-PUTNAM COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT The Bureau/Putnam County Health Department makes routine and unannounced visits each month to various food service establishments in Bureau and Putnam counties to inspect the operations.

Health inspectors use an identical scorecard at each facility, where they check for health code compliance in 45 areas. Each

area carries a rating from one to five, with five being the most critical. Inspectors check the entire operations of the facility in 14 different categories, such as food protection, personnel, and garbage and refuse disposal.

Course will be held on March 3 in Henry HENRY — Agriculture is the most dangerous industry. Each year unnecessary deaths and injuries affect farmers and their families, farm employees and rescuers.

For this reason, local Farm Bureaus have joined with the Illinois Fire Service Institute and Country Insurance to sponsor a course for fire, rescue and EMS providers in Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties.

This course will take place on Saturday, March 3, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Henry Fire Station in Henry.

This class will provide an overview of farm fires and brings strategies, tactics, operations and water supply logistics together.

Today, rural fire departments can extinguish most farm fires. With an emphasis on pre-planning,

thinking “beyond your own backyard” and encouraging joint training and practice, rural fires can have successful outcomes.

The class covers response capabilities, strengths and weakness of the department as well as considerations for farm fires in buildings, areas involving common farm chemicals, machinery, fields and/or crops. Training will be provided by David Newcomb of the Illinois Fire Service Institute.

A passing food inspection score is 65 or above.

At 65, the Bureau/Putnam County ordinance allows the health department to close an establishment, but a score doesn’t have to be that low for the department to close it. It

depends on the number of critical and non-critical violations and the type of violations. Certain combinations can create a domino effect for food-borne outbreaks.

Ideas on how to reduce the number of abortions A

bortion is the defining, underlying issue of the Illinois GOP gubernatorial primary. Not taxes, not the budget deficit, nor the pension burden, nor education nor infrastructure — matters the governor and Legislature can do something about.

This column is not about anti-abortion or abortion rights arguments, but about whether the two sides could ever come together to work on efforts both sides might agree on— how to reduce the number of abortions. My friend Perry Klopfenstein of Gridley (north of Bloomington) thinks it is possible.

First, the governor’s race. Earlier this year Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill that provides taxpayer funding for abortions, after declaring on several occasions, even to the Catholic cardinal of Chicago, that he would veto the bill.

This action prompted outrage among anti-abortion conservative Christian groups in the state. And it was the catalyst for the GOP gubernatorial run of conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton.

and transgender persons as well as those who have abortions. Ives declares that Rauner is their friend.

Many, including the head of the state GOP, are calling for Ives to pull the commercials, but she persists. Ives is obviously trying to arouse the base of social conservatives, which is hard to do in primary elections. Only a small fraction, 15 percent or less, of persons 18 and over typically cast Republican primary ballots in Illinois.

Now to my friend Perry Klopfenstein. Perry is a smart guy, a successful small businessman, Republican activist, staunchly anti-abortion.

As with many people, I am opposed to abortion, yet come down on the abortion rights side of the divide.

Perry thinks people like the two of us should come together to work on generally non-governmental policies that would reduce abortions. I still have in my files an op-ed column

by Perry that appeared in the April

5, 1998, edition of the Peoria Journal-Star.

In his piece, Perry declares that rhetorical warfare has not produced positive results. “It’s time to break the stalemate,” Perry says.

He lays out seven “incentives for life,” which include adoption, informed and parental consent, and medical and living assistance for those who would carry-to-term, this last a rather liberal position.

Perry encourages the abortion rights side to come up with their suggestions as well. I think of better sex education and making adoption easier. I hear from couples wanting to adopt that the process is often more difficult that it needs to be.

Then there is an idea I have offered before and which many find way too harsh, to wit: In return for the state’s safety net for a single mother and her first child, a woman would agree to wear a long-term birth control patch.

The ideas above may have merit, or not. Perry’s point is that both sides could come together in support of efforts to reduce abortions, and not wait for court decisions that may or may not ever come. Roe v. Wade (1973), which laid out a constitution-

al right to abortion, is not likely to be overturned in the near future, though it might be down the line, as more conservative justices are appointed.

The Guttmacher Institute, an abortion rights research group, reports that almost one-fifth (19 percent) of all pregnancies in 2014 ended in abortion. The number of abortions that year is estimated to have been 926,000, or 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44.

This is a startling number to me, yet it is way down from earlier years. So, possibly the intense public debate between anti-abortion and abortion rights positions has made young men and women more conscious of their options to unintended pregnancy and abortion.

Yet wouldn’t it be great if Bruce Rauner and Jeanne Ives took joint leadership in exhorting us to create community groups of both anti-abortion and abortion rights folks to see how we might reduce unintended pregnancy and abortion even further?

The real Pritzker looks down his nose at Emil Jones

PRINGFIELD — Could it be that billionaire J.B. Pritzker, scion of the Hyatt hotel fortune, looks down his nose at Emil Jones, a man who rose from being a Chicago sewer inspector to president of the Illinois Senate?

It sure looks that way.

The Chicago Tribune recently released an FBI recording of a wiretapped conversation between thenGov. Rod Blagojevich and Pritzker.

Pritzker is not only the current front-runner for the Democratic nomination but also a first-class snob.

Shortly after Barack Obama was elected president, Blagojevich was talking to Pritzker about who to appoint to fill the U.S. Senate seat Obama was vacating.

Two of the names that came up were Secretary of State Jesse White and Jones.

Here is an excerpt of the conversation: “Pritkzer: I’m sure you, I’m sure you thought of this one, but: Jesse White. Even though I know you guys aren’t like, you know, bosom buddies or anything. It covers you on the African American thing.

“Blagojevich: Correct.

“Pritzker: He’s totally, he’s totally, you know … he’s Senate material in a way that Emil Jones isn’t, if I may say.

“Blagojevich: Okay.

“Pritzker: I mean, you know,

he’s just, I don’t know how to say it exactly. But Emil’s a little more crass.

“Blagojevich: Right.”

So, what does this hoity-toity Pritzker mean by “crass”?

Webster’s dictionary says crass means: “lacking sensitivity, refinement, or intelligence.”

I’ve interviewed Jones many times over the years. I’ve always found him to be quite intelligent. And I’ve seen him nearly in tears talking about a family member who struggled after returning from Vietnam.

He is also a sensitive person.

So, could it be that Pritzker thinks Jones lacks refinement? It would appear so.

Webster’s defines refinement as: “cultured elegance in behavior or manner.”

If “cultured elegance” was

required of Illinois politicians, Abraham Lincoln would never have been president.

While I often don’t agree with Jones on many issues, I’ve always admired the political pluck he exhibited in his rise in politics. It may surprise Pritzker, but some folks aren’t born at the top.

Some, like Jones, have had to fight their way there.

Of course, Pritzker will tell you, he had no idea that anyone but Blagojevich would hear his words.

But one definition of character is “what you say or do when you think no one else is paying attention.”

Forgive the crassness, J.B., but you, sir, lack character.

Amount of clay in soil a determining factor U of I Extension URBANA — Deer infected with chronic wasting disease are doomed to a slow and certain death, eventually wasting away as they lose the ability to eat and drink. There is no cure and no vaccine, and the number of infected deer continues to rise every year.

But University of Illinois scientists recently published a new study that could help explain the movement of the disease across the landscape. “Our biggest goal is to support the management of this non-curable disease in an animal that is an economically important resource for the state of Illinois,� Michelle Green, research assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at U of I and co-author of the study, said.

Chronic wasting disease is caused by a prion, a sort of mutant

protein with an unusual folding pattern that tricks the body’s own proteins into mutating, too. After enough proteins get in on the act, holes begin to form in the brain, causing physiological and behavioral changes.

The disease is part of a group known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, which includes mad cow and a few other rare diseases.

A key element to managing the disease is reducing exposure to the prion. The disease is primarily passed from deer to deer through direct physical contact, but it can also be passed from mother to fetus or picked up indirectly when a deer comes in contact with the disease agent in the environment.

The new study focuses on the indirect pathway. “When infected deer urinate, defecate, or salivate, they can shed prions. When a susceptible deer comes along and licks, ingests, or inhales infected soil, it could pick up a prion. But soil is complex.

It’s not clear what soil characteristics are associated with the

And the data clearly indicated a break point that could be useful in future management schemes: Soils with more than 18 percent clay were associated with a steep drop in cases of the disease. “Clay can tend to immobilize molecules, and we think at these higher concentrations, clay is holding onto the prions so they’re not bioavailable,� Dorak said.

Soil pH was also influential, with “With these results, we can now look at the entire state and say, for example, there are a lot of infected deer in one area and not too far away, there are soils that have the right mix of conditions to hold prions persistently should an infected deer contaminate the area,� Green said. “We would recommend a management scheme to keep the infected deer out of such high-risk areas.�

The first step was to break the five-county area into one-mile square sections that either had a strong history of the disease or not. The researchers laid this grid over a detailed soils map and created a statistical model to predict the likelihood that the disease



PCE students play ‘The Incredible Journey’ PCHS plans

freshman orientation on Feb. 26

HENNEPIN — Water molecules are in constant motion throughout our Earth.

To illustrate the varied paths they might take, fifth grade students at Putnam County Elementary recently played “The Incredible Journey” game provided by University of Illinois Extension Marshall Putnam Ag in the Classroom.

This game illustrates to the student how water travels through the water cycle.

Instead of a predictable two dimensional path as many simple diagrams illustrate, individual drops circulate from one state of matter to another in a random path.

Students identified the different places water might move.

During the game they used dice to determine their drop’s path.

They drew diagrams of the irregular path unique to their individual water drop.

Students then explained their diagram and how it might have happened.

GRANVILLE — Putnam County High School will host a freshman student orientation for all current eighth graders who will be transitioning to the high school for the 2018-19 school year.

The orientation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at the high school. All incoming students are encouraged to attend with their parents/guardians. Course registration and general expectations will be presented by administration, student representatives and other personnel. This evening will serve as the primary opportunity to review the registration process and expectations as a child moves from junior high to secondary level.

PRINCETON — Madison singer-songwriter Josh Harty will perform at the Princeton Coffeehouse at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24.

Raised in North Dakota, Harty is a third generation musician. As the son of a small town police chief and preacher, he often muses that growing up he figured he’d end up going to jail or going to hell. Between the ages of 5 and 11 he sang gospel and country with his father in just about every Lutheran Church, Eagles Club and senior center in the Midwest.

After playing in several bands in Fargo during his teens, Harty set to work writing songs that became the material for his first album, “Three Day Notice.” Shortly thereafter, he amazingly opened for blues legend BB King, receiving a standing ovation and an encore request. His musical career was launched.

“With a broad country

twang to his vocals and set that nicely straddles the rock/county/blue divide, ‘Holding On’ (Harty’s newest album) is both atmospheric and gripping,” wrote Pete Whalley of the UK’s Get Ready to Rock.

The Princeton Coffeehouse is located at the Open Prairie UCC Church, 25 E. Marion St. in downtown Princeton. Admission is $15 at the door. The venue is completely accessible and there is ample free parking nearby. Doors open at 7 p.m. Fair trade coffee, tea and homemade desserts are available.

Relay for Life team will host spaghetti supper HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Team, Relay for Life, will hold its annual spaghetti supper from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, March 1, in the community room of the Hennepin Park District.

The menu will consist of spaghetti

with homemade sauce, salad, bread, garlic butter and homemade dessert.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for ages 5 to 12 and free for those under 5 years old.

The next card party will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Hennepin Park District Community Room.

Starved Rock Country Community Foundation announces scholarships Deadline to submit applications is March 31 OTTAWA — The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation has announced the availability of scholarship applications.

The Carol and Dick Janko Scholarship was created for recent and upcoming high school graduates who are enrolled in an accredited university or college for the fall semester, and who can demonstrate recent studies or work related activities focused on entrepreneurship.

The five $1,000 scholarships reflect the Janko family’s commitment to youth, education, economic development and philanthropy.

Applications for the scholarships are available at all high schools in LaSalle, Livingston, Bureau and Putnam counties, and at www.srccf.org.

Illinois Valley Community College plans Agriculture Spring Open House March 2

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will host its second Agriculture Spring Open House for all prospective students and parents from 7:45 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 2.

Guests will interact with current IVCC students and faculty, hear an overview on the revitalized program, tour campus and participate in an activity in the ag lab. Enrollment, financial aid and scholarship

information will also be provided.

In less than two years, the program led by instructor Willard Mott has grown to over 30 students taking at least one ag course. Four classes were offered this spring and 10 will be offered in fall.

Students are asked to preregister online by Monday, Feb. 26, at ivcc.edu/agriculture or by contacting Mott at 815-224-0413 or willard_ mott@ivcc.edu.

Feb. 26 — Lasagna with meat sauce, salad with toppings, garlic bread, yogurt with fruit.

Diacamba application training set for Feb. 22 PRINCETON — Farmers raising soybeans who plan to use crop protection products containing dicamba in 2018 must be certified to do so.

Several groups have joined together to offer an opportunity for farmers to take part in a certification class on Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Becker Building in Princeton.

Reservations are required by calling 815-875-6468 or by visiting https://ifca.com/illinoisdicambatraining/ and selecting

the date. Space is limited.

The class begins at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude by 10 a.m. Farmers need to attend this meeting to receive certification for handling dicamba. There is no charge.

Illinois is following the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) parameters as it relates to dicamba use in 2018. Applicators using dicamba-containing crop protectants must be a certified applicator to apply it. Those applicators

must also prove that they have been to dicamba-specific training in order to apply the product. This session fulfills that requirement.

The Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, County Farm Bureaus and their Growmark affiliates, Illinois Corn Growers Association and Illinois Soybean Association are working closely with the Illinois Department of Agriculture and University of Illinois to ensure farmers and other applicators have a broad

array of training venues this winter.

Jean Payne, Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association president, said, “If you intend on applying dicamba, you need to get to a training session.”

Payne added: “It’s a mandatory requirement of the label. If you get caught applying this product without having training and keeping a record, there’s monetary penalties and ultimately you could lose your applicator license.”
