Habitat Restore set to open in Peru this spring

Open Our Doors Campaign is seeking $375,000 to support the start-up of the store GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com PERU — Habitat for Humanity of La Salle, Bureau & Putnam Counties has kicked off its Open Our Doors Campaign for its new resale store set to open in Peru late spring.

Named the Habitat Restore, it will be located at 1001 Shooting Park Road.

The Open Our Doors Campaign seeks to raise $375,000 to help start the Restore.

During a reception Thursday in Peru’s Westclox building, Sally Van Cura, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of La Salle, Bureau & Putnam Counties, said the vision for Restore is “truly community teamwork.”

“We need you to sponsor and make gifts,” she said, adding the organization also is on the hunt for donations to fill the 28,000-square-foot location.

The Miller Group Charitable Trust has provided the lead gift of the campaign, which came in the form of a $100,000 grant on Christmas Eve. The Habitat for Humanity Board also has been able to secure a $175,000 joint loan from 13 area banks to help finance the Habitat Restore project so it could open to the community sooner.

Thomas Pigati, vice president of the Habitat Board, said Thursday the support of the banks came with a little help from John McCormick, president and CEO of Eureka Savings Bank.

Pigati said it was McCormick who networked with the area banks and asked if they would be willing to make a donation toward the Habitat mission, which they all agreed. The Eureka Savings Bank Board was so supportive of the Restore project, they approved a $15,000 donation.

“John, you don’t know how much Habitat appreciates what you did,” Pigati said Thursday.

“It’s important to understand community and give back to worthwhile things like Habitat,” he said.

McCormick was gifted with a homemade sign for his key role in bringing the Habitat Restore mission to fruition.

Joyce McCullough, trustee of the Miller Group’s Charitable Trust, also accepted a gift on behalf of the Habitat Board for the campaign’s lead gift.

What will the Habitat Restore do for the area?

The proceeds raised at the Habitat Restore will provide a funding source for the local Habitat for Humanity organization to provide housing and homeowner repair opportunities. These repairs will in turn assist with property values in the three counties it serves.

The Habitat Restore will provide nine jobs to start, pay local and state taxes, provide a community center for trainings, meetings and gatherings, assist local businesses by providing tax and marketing alternatives to donations as the organization clears out its surplus inventory, provides a recyclable alternative and allows for a destination shopping experience.

Peru Mayor Scott Harl was present at Thursday’s reception and said it’s wonderful Peru was chosen for the Habitat Restore.

“You’re going to be at an intersection that’s probably one of the busiest intersections in La Salle County, so you’re going to have a great location and with your signage you’ll be a busy place. There’s no doubt about it.”

Harl mentioned the ball is rolling to soon begin building a new Habitat home in Peru. The location is yet to be determined.

Donations are now being accepted

Donations to the Habitat Restore are now being accepted at the Peru location (1001 Shooting Park Road) on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. To schedule a weekend delivery, call 815-434-2041.

PERU — Manor Court of Peru held its second COVID-19 vaccine clinic for residents and staff on Jan. 20. The clinic vaccinated residents and staff members with the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

“We are pleased to be able to offer the COVID-19 vaccine to our residents and staff,” said Lorrie Lieske, administrator. “Our residents have a much higher risk of getting sick, being hospitalized or dying from COVID-19. Our caregivers live in the community where the virus continues to spread, and yet despite cir-

cumstances, they continue to risk their lives caring for our most vulnerable. The vaccine has been shown to provide a great deal of protection against the virus and will save many lives.”

Manor Court of Peru will continue to follow all necessary precautions, including wearing personal protective equipment and conducting regular testing to ensure the utmost safety.

“We are grateful that federal and state officials designated long-term care residents and staff a priority

for the first phase of distribution for the vaccine,” said Michelle Sommer, marketing director. “This has been a very challenging year for our staff, our residents and their families. With COVID-19 cases continuing to rise, we know we have a long road ahead.

However, we are encouraged that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found the vaccine to be safe and effective. We are hopeful that we can begin to put this pandemic behind us and look ahead to brighter days.”

Early voting will begin Thursday, Feb. 25, and will continue through

Monday, April 5, on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and also on Saturday, April 3, from 9 a.m. to noon. Any voter that is a valid registrant in Putnam County may vote during the early voting period after showing proper identification. However, any vote cast

Police had generally turned a blind eye to minor traffic infractions during the pandemic, but some now are stepping up enforcement regardless of whether they’re vaccinated — and many aren’t.

Law enforcement officers and first responders were among the first to be offered COVID-19 vaccines, but participation to date has been about seven in 10, according to a Shaw Media poll of local police chiefs.

Participation rates varied, but every agency reported at least some optouts. No department is 100% vaccinated.

Spring Valley Police Department had the highest vaccination rate, with Chief Adam Curran reporting “about 90%” participation.

“That includes both full-time and part-time officers,” said Curran, who also has stepped up traffic patrols. “Most of the part-time officers have been able to get their vaccinations through their full-time employment, but we have accommodated any part-time officer that wasn’t able to do so through their other employer.”

At the other end was Oglesby, where just two of nine officers have been vaccinated, for a participation rate of 22%.

“All were offered,” Chief Doug Hayse said. And with regards to patrol protocols, “I don’t see this changing anything. We have slowed down on traffic stops, but I have recently seen an increase in stops.”

Most other agencies reported vac-

cination rates near or above the two-thirds mark. Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and Streator Police Department did not respond to queries.

Mendota officers are 70% vaccinated. Chief Greg Kellen said traffic protocols will not change for the time being.

“Officers will continue to make traffic stops,” Kellen said. “However, they will continue wearing masks, disinfect their hands equipment and squads frequently, maintain social distancing and take reasonable precautionary measures whenever applicable. This is our plan until this pandemic is under control.”

Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei received his shot Dec. 20, and most subordinates followed suit, as his officers are certified emergency medical first responders and thus were entitled to priority shots. Bernabei said 17 of his 25 sworn officers (68%) have been vaccinated and he anticipates more will follow.

Why are there opt-outs? Opinions varied among the chiefs surveyed, but some officers are wary of being first to get the shot.

“It’s probably wait-and-see,” Bernabei speculated. “I personally had zero side-effects — no different from getting the flu shot.”

Another issue is which shot to take. With some police officers being generally young, fit and not at-risk, the chiefs expect more takers once the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine becomes available.

Side effects have been reported, too, as was the case in Princeton.

Chief Tom Kammerer declined to provide a participation rate — “I have had a few vaccinated” — but he did confirm “some did get sick after the second dose.”

“As far as traffic stops, we are starting to get back to normal,” Kammerer said. “We are being as

Ottawa Police Chief Brent Roalson reported 64% participation, with 23 officers vaccinated and 13 who “opted out for the time being.”

“We have been increasing [traffic] enforcement, however,” Roalson said. “We still follow our heightened safety protocols to prevent or do our part in stopping the spread of the virus.”

LaSalle Police Chief Mike Smudzinski reported just 40% participation, with eight of his 20 officers so far vaccinated. As with Roalson, however, Smudzinski anticipates participation will increase. And while some chiefs directed patrol officers to disregard minor offenses, Smudzinski wasn’t one of them.

“I’ve never been forthright in saying, ‘Do not stop cars,’ ” he said.

“I’ve just called my guys to be as careful as they can be.”

LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Tem-

pleton put his rate at “a little over half,” but also anticipates more immunizations as officers overcome their hesitancy and have more products to choose from.

“It certainly is open to others,” Templeton said. “If they change their minds, we’ll certainly offer it to them.”

“The traffic protocol will remain about the same,” he said. “When they have a necessary traffic stop, we want them to use proper protective equipment while making the stop.”

Smaller agencies (Oglesby notwithstanding) tended to have higher participation rates. Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle reported that 77% of his staff has been vaccinated.

In Utica, Police Chief Rod Damron said all but two were vaccinated.

“One [opted out] because of choice,” Damron said, “the other because of allergic reasons.”

IVCC is part of Compeer Financial’s $1.9 million Agriculture and Rural Initiative OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College is partnering with Compeer Financial, a Farm Credit cooperative based in the upper-Midwest, and other community and technical colleges to bolster vocational agriculture education programs and make them more accessible to young adults.

Compeer has committed $1.9 million in grants and scholarships over the next five years through its Agriculture and Rural Initiative to 30 post-secondary colleges.

Representatives from Compeer’s Fund for Rural America Board met with the colleges to announce the first major gift from its Agriculture and Rural Initiative. The initiative provides training for young adults pursuing agriculture-related careers.

A shortage of skilled workers is an ongoing challenge for farmers and other agriculture-related businesses. Compeer Financial is addressing the problem and putting significant financial support behind the effort.

IVCC ag program co-coordinator Willard Mott said, “IVCC is excited about the opportunities the Compeer partnership will provide for students, farmers and businesses in the area.”

Co-coordinator Kathryn Seebruck agrees. “These grants will provide us with even more class-

room technology as well as ease the financial burden on students.”

The Agriculture and Rural Initiative invests in programs and projects that directly address the needs of farmers and others who work in agriculture. Compeer Financial clients often list workforce development among their highest concerns.

Compeer is investing $1.6 million in grants and $375,000 in scholarships. Participating schools serve 144 counties in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin and each has an established agriculture program.

Colleges may use the grants for equipment and technology, recruitment, retention and teacher training.

Partner colleges will receive two annual $1,250 ag scholarships over the next five years.

In addition to extending financial support, Compeer will also connect partner colleges with team members who are alumni or live in the area to serve as resources to the ag programs.

Compeer will be a conduit between graduates looking to put their training to work and clients who have jobs available.

“Compeer is a strong supporter of high school programs and organizations focused on agricultural education for youth,” said Roger Newell, a trustee of the Fund for Rural America.

Kinzinger says he is ‘at peace’ with vote on impeachment

BY ALEX ORTIZ aortiz@shawmedia.com U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he’s not losing a lot of sleep about efforts to censure him among county GOP organizations in his district.

The Republican from Channahon has received blowback from his vote to impeach President Donald Trump and his rejection of the falsehood about widespread voter fraud.

When asked on a press call with reporters Tuesday for his thoughts on being censured by his fellow Republicans, he touted his support for them, but appeared to shake off their condemnation.

“Quite honestly, I don’t care,” he said. “It’s not something I focus on.”

What he has focused on in his many media appearances since voicing support for impeaching Trump, is a call for his party to move beyond the path it’s taken the last four years.

Kinzinger argued that after the storming of the U.S. Capitol by proTrump insurrectionists, he would have regretted voting against impeachment.

“I’m at peace,” he said. “I have zero regrets whatsoever.”

have been “overwhelmingly supportive.”

Still, among some Republican county organizations, the reaction has been mixed to a degree.

The La Salle County Adma GOP voted by an 88% Kinzinger margin to censure Kinzinger earlier this month.

By contrast, the Grundy County Republicans decided against censuring Kinzinger by a vote of 11-2, according to Chairman Aren Hansen. He argued censuring the congressman didn’t help further the goals of Republicans in his county.

“The cons outweigh the pros, essentially,” Hansen said.

While Hansen said he understands the anger among local Republicans and didn’t like Kinzinger’s “grandstanding” on Trump’s impeachment, he conceded the congressman is “speaking his truth.”

Kinzinger said he hasn’t done any polling to better measure the blowback, but he insisted he didn’t take his position on impeachment with a political angle. He added that “it’s fine” that people are upset with him.

U.S. Rep Adam Kinzinger day goes by, there are going to be more and more people who kind of get away from the emotion of it and see the reality of what’s been happening, which is, man, that is a bad precedent to set,” he said.

Hansen said he expects to be on a call with Kinzinger and other county GOP chairs in the coming days. He said he hopes the congressman can “calm down the real fired-up faction of our base.”

The congressman also offered some more insight on his goals with his new political action committee Country First. He said he hopes to back other candidates for office, but he added there will be a couple of rules to win his support.

“You’ve got to commit to telling people the truth and you got to commit to not peddling conspiracy theories,” Kinzinger said. “It seems like a low bar, but unfortunately, even

that low bar eliminates a lot of people.”

As for his own political future, while there has been much speculation about his ambitions to run for statewide office, Kinzinger said that’s not his intention, though he didn’t rule out the possibility.

Kinzinger said his ultimate goal is to “build a movement” and make a party with no place for conspiracy theories like QAnon or white supremacy that leads to violence like he saw on Jan. 6. He added he’s not making these appeals to be a “hero.”

“I’m doing something that I think should be actually a basic job of a member of Congress,” he said. “But I am putting it all on the line, because quite honestly, at the end of my life, I need to look in the mirror and know I did everything I could with the privilege that I have to be able to serve in this position.”

Release date, distributor all pending TOM COLLINS tcollins@shawmedia.com He will be 82 soon, and he looks it. He sounds it. Sixty years behind bars have given Chester Weger scant access to the public and limited chances to tell his story — until now.

The Starved Rock murderer has been filmed and interviewed before, but not as a free man. That changes in a forthcoming documentary that not only includes footage of a Chester post-release Weger but Weger also archival footage of the many players, most of whom are gone now, from the 1960 murders that caught the world’s attention and still ignites hot dispute.

“I want to thank them for everything they done for me,” Weger said from the passenger seat of a car that drove him from prison to a transitional facility. “I appreciate everything that everybody’s done to try to get me out of here.”

His won’t be the last word in the sprawling documentary, which is in post-production but not yet slated for release. Jody McVeigh-Schultz, the director, deferred comment until the project approaches a release date, noting post-production details remain fluid, including a distributor or broadcast network.

Others attached to the project were just as tight-lipped. Although cameras were spotted about Starved Rock Country in recent months, those interviewed disclosed they are subject to nondisclosure agreements and presently barred from detailing what they discussed when the cameras were rolling.

A few segments may yet be added as well. McVeigh-Schultz had requested permission (so far denied) to take cameras in the LaSalle County courtroom, where Weger’s lawyers still are trying to win a fresh trip to the crime lab. Andy Hale and Celeste Stack have argued, so far without success, that DNA techniques are sufficiently advanced that perhaps old pieces of evidence

Whatever the outcome, the documentary will provide not only a case update but also rare glimpses of past case participants, thanks to entrepreneur-photographer David Raccuglia, who lent his own footage to the project. Raccuglia, a LaSalle native whose father prosecuted Weger for murder in 1961, had sought out investigators, jurors and Weger himself after being caught up in the case somewhat unwillingly.

“Growing up, I got into many fistfights with people who came up to me and said that my father put an innocent man in jail,” Raccuglia recalled.

The footage Raccuglia compiled includes not only his late father, prosecutor Anthony Raccuglia, but also the lead investigator, the first reporter on the crime scene and the

last surviving juror, plus journalists and attorneys who took up the case later. The key figure, of course, is Weger, who was depicted in “30 or 40 hours” of footage culled from four interviews, three of them while he was in prison, and through interviews of Weger’s family.

“Chester’s family was very, very nice,” Raccuglia said. “It wasn’t easy. It took a bit of convincing to show them I was going to make an honest film. I don’t know that ‘trust’ is the right word, but they came around.”

Raccuglia emphasized that he took an open-minded approach to the case as he started filming around 2003, noting he had questioned (and at times sparred with) his father over facts of the case. Raccuglia recalled that his father could get animated when asked about con-

spiracies, for which Anthony had little stomach, but otherwise was willing to discuss the case, answer questions and defend his legal conclusions.

“My dad was my hero,” Raccuglia said. “He looked at this case from every angle, reached a conclusion, took it to the jury and got a verdict that was based on the law and the facts. I undertook this project not because I think my father was wrong but because there was room for other points of view, whether I agree with them or not.

“And it’s almost impossible to believe that a man, one of your own, could bludgeon three women to death – almost to the point of being decapitated. It’s really mind-boggling to accept that, and that had a lot of people believing his innocence.”

St. Bede ambassadors made Valentine cards for local seniors St. Bede Academy students are spreading the Valentine’s Day spirit to area seniors.

The St. Bede students created over 200 Valentine’s day cards for Sen. Sue Rezin’s Valentines for Seniors card drive. After hearing about the card drive, students were determined to help uplift the spirits of long-term care facility residents.

“It means a lot for us to share our love with the community and to remind people that they are not forgotten during these tough times,” said St. Bede ambassadors Alyssa Heitz and Yadi Garcia.

Every day over the past few weeks, members from the Ambassador Team gathered in small groups to make as many cards as possible. Faculty and staff have been impressed by their dedication and compassion.

“As a Catholic school we instill within our students the importance of kindness and service.” said Abbot Philip Davey, OSB. “When I started to see some of the cards and the words that were written, I was amazed. We are blessed to have such good students who are selfless and kind.”

CARBON MONOXIDE AWARENESS

The cold winter winds for Illinoisans mean turning up the thermostat in order to stay warm. The State Fire Marshal encourages residents to have their furnaces checked, change furnace filters and to make sure carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are functioning properly.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is a leading cause of home fires in the United States.

Local fire departments responded to an average of 52,050 fires involving heating equipment each year from 2012-2016. These instances accounted for roughly 15 percent of all reported home fires during that time.

Annually, these fires lead to the loss of 490 civilians’ lives, 1,400 civilian injuries and account for around $1 billion in direct property damage. Half of the home heating fires are reported during the months of December, January and February.

• Create a 3-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

• Test smoke and CO alarms at least once a month and be familiar with the sounds they make.

• Never use an oven or range to heat your home.

• Remember to turn off portable or space heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.

• Install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors on each floor of your home and within 15 feet of each sleeping area.

• CO detectors have a limited life span, check manufacturer’s instructions for information on replacement.

According to the National Fire Incident Reporting System, in 2019 Illinois Fire Departments responded to over 23,000 calls about carbon monoxide and were able to determine a CO leak at nearly 11,000 of those calls.

Symptoms of CO poisoning are very

similar to the flu and include headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness. Other possible signs of CO presence include condensation on walls and windows, house pets becoming sluggish and chronic odors from malfunctioning appliances.

HENRY — Learning about women’s heart health is one of the health topics emphasized by the National Society Daughters of the Revolutionary War for 2021, and so the program at Chief Senachwine Chapter’s Zoom meeting on Feb. 5 covered the topic in depth. Retired nurse and member Carol Byrd explained her topic, “Understanding and Preventing Heart Disease in Women.” Members wore red to recognize February as Heart Month.

Heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined, taking one woman every 80 seconds.

Astoundingly, your heart beats 100,000 times per day, resulting in 2.5 billion heartbeats in a normal lifetime. Your heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood per day, 1 million gallons per lifetime. Symptoms of a heart attack in a woman are often different from those in a man. For example, jaw pain and back pain between the shoulder blades may indicate an impending heart attack for a woman.

Risk factors are smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a family history of heart disease, obesity, unhealthy eating and older age.

If a suspicion exists that a heart attack is pending, Byrd warned against driving to the hospital. Call 911 since an ambulance is outfitted with necessary medical equipment.

Also check-in is avoided, and treatment and tests are quickly ordered.

Chief Senachwine NSDAR members, under Regent Dolores Dace, heard reports from chairmen and officers. From the blog of President General, Denise Doring VanBuren, members learned that 3 million hours of service to communities and chapters have been reported. The goal during VanBuren’s three-year term is 10 million hours.

The National Defense Report explained the many versions of Presidents Day, which in some states is used to honor all U.S. presidents.

In other states, the day honors solely George Washington, its original intention, and in some states the day honors both Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carlson will note 80th wedding anniversary Carl (101 years) and Helen (100 years) Carlson of Peru will celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary.

Carl “Kelly’ J. Carlson and the former Helen Marie Peterson were united in marriage Feb. 20, 1941, in Varna at the home of the bride’s parents. Pastor Carl Olson officiated the service. Their attendants were Virginia (Peterson) Holz and Richard Johnson, both now deceased.

The couple are the parents of four children, Don (Patty) Carlson of The Villages, Fla., John (deceased) and wife, Kalynn Carlson of Aurora, Phil (Sherrie) Carlson of Granville and Chris (Vaun) Meinhold of Lostant.

They have 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Carl retired as a commissioned agent for Amoco after 35 years. They are members of Emmaus Lutheran Church, McNabb.

Reduced health screening dates announced PRINCETON — Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton announced the 2021 dates for reduced health screenings. Screening will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, March 4, July 15 and Nov. 11, in the White Oak Classroom at Perry.

A Lipid Profile test, which includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides, will be offered at $25.

Additional tests offered will be: A1C for $25, Chemistry Profile for $31, Thyroid-TSH for $23 and Hemogram for $9. All tests, except the Hemogram and Thyroid-TSH, require a 12-hour fasting.

When performed outside of the screening, these five tests cost $926.

Even after insurance, they can still

be expensive. The reduced health screening costs only $113 for all five tests. In addition, the tests do not require an order from a provider, and the results are ready within two or three business days. Pre-registration is required by calling 815-876-2050 or 815-876-3313.

No additional lab tests will be performed, and results are available on MyPerryHealth portal within two business days. For tests to be completed, participants must bring their provider name and address to the screening. Gugerty will present Bureau County Genealogical Society program by Zoom on Feb. 25 PRINCETON — The Bureau County Genealogical Society has announced the program for the society on Thursday, Feb. 25, will be presented by David Gugerty on the topic of the Henry Immke Collection. Gugerty is the curator of the Bureau County Historical Society Museum where the Immke Collection is housed. His experience includes work at the university museum at SIU Carbondale and positions at arts centers in Kentucky and North Carolina.

This rare and valuable collection is the result of the photography work done by Immke during the time period from 1866 until 1923 in Princeton and the Bureau County area. The meeting will be presented online via Zoom, and the program is open to the public. GRANVILLE — Under Ted O’Boyle, full court pressure has been a signature of the Seneca girls basketball team.

The press was effective once again Thursday night, but the Lady Irish paired it with excellent execution with their half-court offense as they ran away for a 64-39 victory over Putnam County in a Tri-County Conference game.

“That’s kind of the name of our game,” O’Boyle said about the press. “In the past, we haven’t been a real good half-court offensive team, so we kind of offset that with heavy pressure and tried to wear teams down. Tonight was a mixture of both. The press was pretty effective and we were pretty good in the half court. Overall, it was a great night for us against an always quality opponent.”

Seneca’s pressure bothered the Lady Panthers from the start as Kennedy Hartwig swiped a steal on PC’s first possession and turned it

into a fastbreak layup.

The Irish forced nine turnovers in the first quarter and converted them into 13 points as they built a 22-6 lead.

“I think we played really well,” said senior Brooklyn Giertz, who scored 10 of her 15 points in the first quarter. “I think our press was pretty good, but honestly, our offensive performance was one of the best we’ve had as a team. We played really well offensively. We really focused on our shots and our rebounding was really good too.”

Seneca scored on its first four possessions of the second quarter — bookended by 3-pointers from Giertz and Brooke Roseland — to push the lead to 32-9.

The Irish connected on 56.7 percent (17-of-30) of their shots, including 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from 3-point range, in the first half as they took a 40-16 halftime lead.

“I think overall our execution was as good as we’ve had in a long time,” O’Boyle said. “We ran some really nice sets into their zone. The girls are excited to be out here and

There’s a good chance, however, you’re going to need your favorite device to watch it.

Most schools are allowing a limited number of home spectators (generally two per athlete), while most schools are not allowing visiting fans.

However, in the Interstate Eight Conference – which includes La Salle-Peru – each visiting player is allowed one spectator.

Princeton High School has chosen not to allow any spectators, opting instead to allow its pep band and poms perform, per school tradition, within the restraints of IDPH spectator limitations.

But you can still see your team’s games.

Most schools are streaming to bring the games into your home, either via a free YouTube chan-

nel or Facebook page or a paid subscription to NFHS ($10.99 per month or $69.99 annually). A portion of the subscription fee goes back to the school.

“Due to the current spectator limitations, it has never been more important to offer live streamed sporting events to our St. Bede family, friends and fans,” St. Bede athletic director Nick McLaughlin said.

However, some fans have had issues with the broadcast going out during the game, and L-P athletic director Dan Le said the school has had an issue with the score on its NFHS broadcasts.

L-P invested in a Pixellot camera to broadcast games from Sellett Gymnasium and Howard Fellows Stadium. L-P games on NFHS can be found at http://bit. ly/LPHSlivestream.

For contests not in the gym or stadium, such as swimming, L-P is using Facebook Live on its L-P athletics and activities page (www. facebook.com/LPHSActivities).

Charles “Red” Ruffing was born in Granville in 1905 and attended Hopkins High School before dropping out to work in a coal mine.

He began playing baseball with a coal miner’s team as an outfielder and first baseman before becoming a pitcher after a mining injury to his foot.

Ruffing signed a contact with the Boston Red Sox organization and pitched for its parent club from 192430 before being traded to the Yankees.

He won 240 career games and pitched for six World Series champions, going 7-2 with a 2.63 ERA in the World Series.

There’s information about Ruffing — who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1967 — and many other area greats in a recently published book titled “A Home Run in the Illinois Valley.”

Area residents Robert “Bo” Windy, Bernie McGraw and Ed Krolak, along with Jim Stancl, put together the book.

“It took about a year,” Windy said.

“We were very thorough doing it.

We did a lot of research on the internet and through libraries, along with personal contacts and phone calls. If we had a lead, we followed up on it. We wanted to get the complete story. We had a lot of fun with it, but it took a lot of time also.”

The book features small biographies on many area players who were signed to professional contracts, including Hall of Famer James “Sunny Jim” Bottomley, current MLB pitcher J.A. Happ and current Chicago Cubs minor leaguer Michael Hermosillo, among others, dating back to the late 1800s.

“I knew some of them, but we wanted to find out as many who signed with MLB teams in the area as we could,” Windy said. “We researched all the players. We interviewed Ed Krolak, who is 88 years old and worked at the NewsTribune.

He has a great memory, and brought us back into the olden days and many leagues from our area. He also brought back a lot of players who were well-known players and area favorites.”

The book also includes stories on barnstorming teams playing in the area, including stops by the House of David and the Kansas City Monarchs, the answer to the question on whether or not Satchel Paige pitched at Washington Park, information on well-known teams such as the Thompson Rexall Girls Softball team (led by Mary Dagreadt), the Peru American Legion and the Ladd Merchants, and history of area venues such as Washington Park and Bennett Field.

“It’s amazing the amount of work they put in to put this together,” retired longtime WLPO broadcaster Lanny Slevin said. “It’s very well done. The printing and pictures are very crisp and clear. It’s very well put together. I learned a lot going through it.

“It has a lot of information. The research they did into this is phenomenal. It really is. I think anybody in the Illinois Valley of any age who is interested in the history of baseball in the Illinois Valley would be extremely interested in it.”

Windy said the initial printing has been sold out, but a second printing will occur soon.

“We printed 60 books, and 60 are sold from the internet and word of mouth,” Windy said. “The first

Illinois Valley Community Hospital receives Lighthouse Award for improving cardiac arrest survival Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru, now St. Margaret’s Health-Peru, has been designated as an RQI Lighthouse Organization for demonstrating resuscitation best practices using the RQI program.

IVCH was the first hospital in Illinois to use the RQI system to train nurses and other clinical providers in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, hospital officials said. The hospital implemented the system – which is endorsed by the American Heart Association – four years ago.

“With RQI, our staff practices hands-on CPR skills with a manikin every three months through a system that provides live feedback,”

nurse educator Ashley Freitag said in a news release. “This allows staff to provide the best quality CPR in an emergent situation. IVCH is honored to be at the leading edge in CPR certification while bringing the most up-to-date CPR training to our providers and staff.”

Officials from IVCH said the RQI training techniques have helped the hospital’s clinical staff achieve mastery of high-quality CPR skills and competence, which has improved their outcome.

The RQI Lighthouse Organizations align with the RQI mission to eliminate preventable death from sudden cardiac arrest.

The IDPH initially required that schools must maintain a 30-foot distance between spectators and the court of play, which made it nearly impossible for many small schools such as LaMoille, Ohio and DePue. The IDPH has since relaxed on that distance, pulling it to 12 feet, making it more feasible for those smaller gymnasiums.

Per Little Ten Conference rules, LaMoille and Earlville are allowing two spectators per home athlete.

LaMoille will stream games through the school’s athletic Facebook page, while Earlville will stream through the NFHS Network at www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/earlville-highschool-earlville-il.

DePue is still working out the details for handling fans, but will be streaming home games on its YouTube page.

Henry-Senachwine athletic director Matt Emmons said the school was still discussing spectators, but nothing was definitive yet. No fans were allowed at the girls basketball team’s game Monday or the boys game Tuesday.

To enter games at Bureau Valley, spectators should look to the colored lights at the front of the school. When red, spectators are required to stay in their vehicles; when green, spectators will have 15 minutes to enter through the front entrance of the high school.

“Obviously, it’s a tough one,” PC coach Jared Sale said. “In terms of our depth, I feel like we’re way more athletic. I think we can go 8-9 deep and we don’t lose a lot of athleticism. However, that athleticism is super green. Cioni is out with a concussion. That’s like cutting the head off the snake. Things run through her. We had a freshman and sophomore out there. They’re getting thrown to the wolves, but I thought they did a good job in terms of handling the ball. We got some opportunities, but we shot (6-of-26) unfortunately in the first

half and Seneca shot (56.7 percent).

When you have the combination of turnovers and their shooting, we’re putting ourselves in a bad spot early.

“One positive though is we cut (the deficit) down to 16. We played hard. We finally started to see some shots fall in the second half. That wasn’t something we saw the first two games. We’re getting there. It’s going to take time and it’s going to be a learning process.”

Kennedy Hartwig scored 15 points for the Irish (4-0), while Madi Bromberek added nine points and eight rebounds.

“It’s been outstanding,” O’Boyle said. “There are a lot of reasons the girls could have had to not give their best as seniors knowing they don’t have a postseason. Instead, they have gone the other way. The effort in practice is awesome. The excitement level is awesome. We want to try to have an undefeated season. We’ve taken that mentality every night. It’s a fun group to coach.”

Scholarship created in memory of Christine Jordan Kalil OGLESBY — A scholarship for students planning to teach in the fine arts has been established in memory of Christine Jordan Kalil.

The $1,000 annual award will support students pursuing teaching careers in art, music, theatre or other fine arts. Demonstrated financial need and a minimum 3.0 GPA are also required.

Kalil of Lexington Park, Md., died Jan. 27, 2020, at age 42 after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

The scholarship was created by

her parents, Lynne and Alan Weber of Princeton, and husband, David Kalil of Lexington Park. Lynne Weber teaches Early Childhood Education part-time at Illinois Valley Community College.

The former Christy Jordan graduated from Princeton High School in 1995. She attended IVCC and graduated from Bradley University in 1999 with a bachelor’s in art. She later earned a master’s in school guidance counseling from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

She was employed for a year by Disney World as the character Chip, and sometimes Dale. At Disney, Kalil discovered her love for children and her desire to enter the educational system.

She taught art in Nashville for five years before moving to southern Maryland where she worked as an elementary school guidance counselor.

Kalil had a passion for theater and was actively involved on stage from high school through adulthood. She
