Henderson hearing delayed

Suspect in Diamond Bradley homicide will appear in court March 1

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Richard A. Henderson, a suspect in the Diamond Bradley killing, will next appear in court on March 1 after Putnam County State’s Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie requested to reschedule the hearing originally set for Feb. 15.

Henderson, 26, of Standard faces the initial charges of concealment of a homicide death, but additional charges are expected.

Mennie requested the change because more time was needed to review the case.

A charge of concealment of a Richard A. homicide death carries a possible Henderson penalty of probation up to five years of incarceration and is a Class 3 felony.

Henderson is being held in the LaSalle County Jail on a $1 million bond. He is being represented by public defender Roger Bolin.

Jason Judd, owner of Grandma Rosie’s, had previously been raising funds for a reward for any tip leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Since the arrest, made through the efforts of law enforcement and not the result of a tip from the public, Judd has been in contact with those who donated to ask them to allow the money to go to Bradley’s family.

“Even with the increase, we continue to be well below the state average for community colleges, less than half the cost of Northern Illinois University and approximately one-fourth the cost of Illinois State and the University of Illinois — even before you start adding in all fees,” Corcoran said.

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com STANDARD — Caregivers know the difficulty in maintaining a sense of normalcy in their lives, and those with a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease face additional stress.

However, caregivers must also provide care for themselves if they wish to be able to continue. A program hosted at the Putnam County Community Center on Feb. 8 focused on helping caregivers both identify and resolve the common problems they face.

“Isolation in caregivers is common; it’s a lonely journey, and it can be hard to find someone to talk to,” Jenna Wachtveitl, an educator with the Central Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, said.

Wachtveitl said providing care for someone with memory loss is both a labor of love and exhausting and stressful.

“We’re seeing an increase in health problems with caregivers.

Their focus becomes completely on those they’re caring for, and they begin ignoring the warning signs of their own health problems. If they continue, they can end up not being

“Perception is a big part of caregiving, and negative self-talk can creep in and affect you in many ways. It’s OK to seek help. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about,

and it’s important to know how to deal with these issues appropriately,” she said.

Wachtveitl stressed the need for caregivers, those they’re caring for, and their families to have the difficult conversations early on in order to avoid conflicts and future guilt, saying, “It’s best not to make promises because you don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.”

She said caregivers are more likely than others to miss doctor’s appointments and not reschedule them.

“Caregivers often laugh off suggestions of rest and relaxation, but they must realize if they don’t deal with their stress and exhaustion, it will cause physical problems,” Wachtveitl said.

Granville’s McCoy Street project expected to be completed before annual Cruise Night

BY DAVE COOK news@puntamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Owners of classic cars generally want to avoid driving on uneven, bumpy streets when they can.

Even more unappealing would be a route with the rocks, fresh asphalt and other debris associated with reconstruction.

That was a concern of Granville Village Board members during their Feb. 6 meeting.

The long-awaited McCoy Street project is expected to begin by May or early June, and members questioned how it could impact their biggest annual event, the Granville Cruise Night, which is held in early August.

Village engineer Mike Richetta, of Chamlin & Associates, said the preliminary engineering agreement is ready and that the expected $49,000 in costs ended up coming in at the

lower amount of $42,500.

He also said the plans will be ready for bidding by March 12 and that by beginning the estimated $700,000 project in May or June, that should allow enough time to complete the work by the time of the cruise night.

“We can ensure the street is ready for the cruise and can have a ‘no work weekend’ included in the contract, if needed, where all of the equipment is out of the way and everything is cleaned up. But, I’m sure we’ll have a very smooth street

by August,” Richetta said.

He also told the board the specifications for the improvement project at the water plant will be ready for bids by March.

The project is expected to take some time to complete as it will require a start-and-stop process that will include cleaning, removal, fabrication, installation and testing.

The board approved changes to its meeting schedule to work around a holiday and an election.

The July meetings were changed to July 10 and 24, the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. The Nov. 6 meeting was changed to Nov. 5.

Extension slates event for pesticide applicators

SPRING VALLEY — Robert “Gus” Ely, 54, of Spring Valley died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.

Gus was born Nov. 3, 1963, in Spring Valley to Charles and Rita (Merdian) Ely. He graduated from LaSalle-Peru High School. Gus was a boat detailer at Hennepin Marine in Hennepin for 30 years.

Survivors include his mother, Rita Ely of Putnam; five brothers, Joe (Nancy) Ely of Spring Valley, Steve (Laura) Ely of Dixon, Dave Ely of Putnam, Bill Ely of Putnam and Kevin (Debbie) Ely of Granville; and one sister, Charlene (Dave) Ryckaert of LaMoille.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Ely, in 1994.

A prayer service was held Sunday, Feb. 11, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with Father Patrick De Meulemeester officiating. Cremation rites were accorded. Visitation was also held Sunday at the funeral home.

She said it’s a necessity for caregivers to continue to do what they’ve always enjoyed.

“Church may not be the same, your time with your friends may not be the same, but you have to adapt to the situation and find a way in which you can continue to participate in what you enjoy,” she said.

Wachtveitl advised caregivers to focus on the things they have control over and to think of the things their loved ones can do rather than those that they can’t.

She said finding the silver lining in things, sharing feelings, a proper diet, rest, and avoiding the tunnel vision often associated with caregiving are all important aspects of acceptance and the lowering of dangerous stress.

The Alzheimer’s Association offers caregivers a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week helpline that caregivers can utilize by calling 1-800-272-3900. There are several webinars available that can be found at www.ALZWebinars.org, and additional help is located at www.alz.org/illinois.

There’s also a Caregiver Buddy app for smartphones that provides immediate access to care tips and easy contact with the helpline.

Hometown Heroes salutes caring volunteers V

Community volunteers come from all walks of life, but they have something in common: positive attitudes, community-mindedness and unselfishness as they do good for the community while expecting nothing in return. We salute 16 such individuals in our special publication, Hometown Heroes.

olunteering is the rent people pay to live in a community, so the saying goes.

Most of us can think of other people who go out of their way to give back to the community.

They’re the ones who keep organizations alive and active, who step forward to help community festivals function smoothly, who give of themselves to enrich the lives of others.

To us, people like that epitomize what it means to be a volunteer.

Thankfully, the spirit of volunteerism lives on in 2018.

Today’s edition includes a section

titled Hometown Heroes, in which 16 local and area volunteers are featured.

Some of them are older, while some of them are younger.

Some have volunteered for quite a while, while others are just getting their feet wet.

Some of them got involved of their own volition, while others were asked to step forward, and they did.

All play important roles in their respective groups, organizations and entities for which they volunteer.

And all share a belief that volun-

teering enriches their own lives as much, maybe even more so, than their actual volunteer work enriches others.

We’ve found other traits that volunteers share.

They have positive attitudes.

They are community-minded and future-oriented.

They are unselfish and altruistic — wanting to do good for the community while expecting nothing in return.

Such admirable qualities are worth recognizing in public — hence our annual Hometown

Heroes section.

They’re also an inspiration to the rest of us who ought to get off our duffs a bit more often and do something for one or more of the many worthy causes that exist locally.

We are pleased to salute volunteers everywhere for all they do to improve the community.

If volunteerism is the rent one pays for living in a community, we’d say this year’s Hometown Heroes have paid their rent in full, and then some.

A love story fitting for Valentine’s Day

rue love lasts forever. Bob Peterson met his sweetheart and wife, Ardene Bonucchi, at his first birthday party.

Bob’s parents, Alvin (Swede) and Bertha Peterson, invited Ardene and her parents, Albert and Evelyn Bonucchi, to Bob’s birthday celebration in their Granville home.

This was the day their friendship bloomed.

COMMENTARY Darrell Alleman and Ardene was born on Feb. 12 of the same year.

Both Bob and Ardene grew up in Granville, attending Granville Grade School and Hopkins High School together. They graduated in 1961.

Ardene’s father owned the Royal Blue Grocery store in Granville where they both worked from their 8th-grade year through high school.

After high school, they pursued careers and eventually went their separate ways. Ardene moved to Chicago to airline school and later was employed by American Airlines.

Bob continued his education at LPO and Northern Illinois University and then ventured to the Toledo National School of Meat Cutting.

Ardene remained in the Chicago area and married, while Bob returned to the Granville area, also married, and then moved to Rockford to work for Jewel Foods.

Years later, Ardene moved back to Granville and worked for LaSalle County Travel, which she pur-

That same year, Bob and Ardene reconnected at their 25th class reunion. Their friendship reignited, and Bob began asking Ardene to schedule his twice-a-year golf trips for this friends and him.

In 2003, their class had a 60th-year old-birthday party. It was here that they discovered that they were both single again. Bob invited Ardene to lunch, and from that day forward, they were a couple. They married on April 3, 2004, which

was Ardene’s father’s birthday, and look forward to their 14th anniversary this April.

Together, they are the proud parents of three children and are blessed with five grandchildren, one great grandchild, with two more due this year.

Theirs is a true love story fitting for Valentine’s Day.

The program will be held at the Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau Building in Henry. There is no fee to participate. Pre-registration is requested

by Tuesday, Feb. 20, to the Extension office at 309-364-2356. CCA Credits have been applied for.

Topics of discussion include: • Need to promote soil health and improve fertility. • Control erosion and weed management. • Increase organic matter, improve soil value and quality. • How to manage and lessen damage due to resistant weeds coming into the area. • Modern tillage practices. • How to identify resistant weeds. • How up-to-date chemical control can be used against resistant weeds.

The increase, expected to generate approximately $174,000, is recommended in anticipation of state funding remaining at 85 percent of 2015 levels — the year before the state budget impasse.

In addition, fee increases for 42 courses and fees for two new courses were approved.

The board also approved:

• A three-year contract extension with auditor Wipfli LLP of Sterling.

• 161 fall graduates earned a total of 202 degrees and certificates compared to 220 graduates earning a total of 283 degrees and certificates in fall 2016. • IVCC is one of the taxing bodies involved in discussions over a proposed downtown Marseilles TIF district. “For 16 years, our practice has been to work with others and strike a balance between doing everything we can to support economic growth, yet reminding everyone of our dependence upon the college’s tax base as a vital stream of operating revenue,â€? Corcoran said. • The annual academic challenge Feb. 2 in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre attracted 238 students from 11 high schools: Ottawa, L-P, Streator, Seneca, Mendota, Hall, St. Bede, Midland, Putnam County, Marquette and LaMoille. • The Jan. 23 Agriculture Night at the IVCC basketball games vs. Kishwaukee provided “great exposure for our new ag program,â€? Granville’s Slingsby honored at Eureka College’s banquet Michael Slingsby of Granville was presented with his 2017 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) All-Conference football First Team Award by Eureka Coach Kurt Barth on Jan. 27 during Eureka College’s banquet.

Slingsby played right guard for Eureka and started 41 straight games for the Eureka Red Devils.

Slingsby’s senior year highlights include Eureka College winning its first conference title in the UMAC and the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.

Slingsby and the other offensive line members efforts allowed the Red Devils to produce a record-breaking ground attack for the Red Devils to rank sixth in the country through the 2017 regular season. Slingsby was part of Eureka’s offensive line that churned out a school-record 2,987 rushing yards in 2017, smash-

ing the previous program record by more than 700 yards. The Red Devils produced 4,322 yards of total offense this season.

Eureka finished as the top scoring offense with 41.3 points per game in UMAC play and 430.7 yards of offense per game, which was third most in the league. Slingsby helped Eureka tally 40 rushing touchdowns.

Slingsby also was a part of a line that allowed just three sacks for the 2017 regular season which placed them tied for first in the nation. Eureka’s offense also lead the nation in time of possession 36:16 minutes/seconds per game.

Slingsby completed his college playing career by playing in the Dream Bowl on Jan. 15 at Salem Football Stadium, Salem, Va. The Dream Bowl is a College Football All-Star game Showcasing the best FCS, D-II and D-III players from across the country.

IVCC hosts softball clinic Feb. 17-18 OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College softball team will host the 19th annual IVCC Eagles Softball Clinic Saturday, Feb. 17, and Sunday, Feb. 18, in IVCC’s gym.

Coaches and current players will offer softball instruction in hitting, bunting, fielding, throwing, base running and communication.

There will be two sessions each day. On Saturday, participants in grades 2-4 will meet from 8 to 10:30 a.m., and participants in grades 5-8 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Sunday, grades 2-4 will meet 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and grades 5-8

from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Cost of the clinic is $30 per player and includes five hours of instruction and a clinic T-shirt. If a player can come only one day, the cost is $20.

All players should bring a glove and tennis shoes (no spikes or cleats allowed). If a player has her own bat, she is allowed to bring it.

New DAR chapter in Henry area Official celebration and installation of officers planned for April 8 HENRY — On Feb. 5, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution chartered the Chief Senachwine Chapter for Henry and the surrounding areas.

The official Illinois celebration will be held April 8; more details will be forthcoming.

Installation of chapter officers will be held on April 8 with state officials in attendance. State Regent Gloria Perkins Flathom will install the officers of the new Chief Senachwine Chapter. Those installed will be Nancy Gillfillan, chapter regent; Dolores Dace, vice regent; Diana Williamson, chaplain; Judy Schwiderski, recording secretary; Carrie Schwiderski, corresponding secretary; Wendy Welch, treasurer; Sharon Bittner, registrar; and Jean Watkins, historian-librarian. Nearly two dozen members will be in attendance to celebrate the establishment of this 105th Illinois DAR chapter.

more about membership in DAR is invited to attend.

The name for the new chapter, Chief Senachwine Chapter, was proposed by a group of DAR members interested in founding a new chapter and was approved by the NSDAR in January 2018.

The word Senachwine has been a familiar term in the Henry and Putnam-Marshall counties for about 200 years.

Senachwine comes from the name of a Potawatomi Indian chief (c. 1744-1834) who became chieftan following the death of his brother Gomo. These Illinois River Indians were the last major Potawotami chieftans to live in the area. Chief Senachwine is buried on a high bluff overlooking the site of his Indian settlement north of the village of Putnam, which lies north of Henry.

As a geographical name, the area today has the Senachwine Valley Road, Senachwine Lake, Senachwine Creek, Henry-Senachwine School District, the Lower Illinois-Senachwine Lake Watershed and the Lake Senachwine Reservoir, among other locations.

Area students receive honors at Lincoln College - ABE LINCOLN — Twelve area students have been named to honors lists for the fall 2017 semester in Lincoln College’s Accelerated Bridge to Education (ABE Program).

The list includes seven students who received special honors for a perfect 4.0 grade point average. They include: Kristen Goodchild and Jordan Roetker of Ottawa; Madaline Hubbard of Oglesby; Jill Kowalczyk of Peru; Ashley Mecum of Princeton; Pearson Dillon of Van Orin; and Michelle Story of Granville.

Five area students were named to the dean’s list. Dean’s list students are recognized for a grade point average of 3.25 to 3.74. They include: Audrey Becker and Alicia Wear of Mendota; Uriel Briones of Ottawa; Erick Fuentes of Spring Valley; and Deirdre Weide of Oglesby.

The Accelerated Bridge to Education program is geared toward adult learners and is currently offered in Oglesby on the campus of Illinois Valley Community College; in Peoria on the campus of Illinois Central College; and on the Lincoln College campus in Normal. Students take one class at a time under an accelerated schedule, which combines classroom instruction one

night per week with online learning that is equivalent to a traditional 14-week course.

Multiple start dates are offered during the year, giving adult students greater flexibility to balance their class load with their work and personal schedules.

Lincoln College recently announced that it will begin offered ABE classes on its Lincoln Campus as well.

Pratt named to dean’s list SPRINGFIELD — Dalton Pratt of Hennepin was named to the 2017 fall semester dean’s list at the University of Illinois Springfield. In order to qualify for the dean’s list, a student must be an undergraduate who took at least eight graded semester hours and maintained a grade point average of at least 3.75 for the semester.

Area students named Distinguished Scholars ROCKFORD — Austin Smith and Madison Pearson of Peru, full-time students attending Rockford University, were named Distinguished Scholars for the fall 2017 semester, earning at least a 3.75 grade point average with no grades below “C” and having completed all requirements for the semester.

‘Tumbleweeds’ auditions scheduled for Feb. 16 and 17 PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council has announced auditions for the children’s musical, “Tumbleweeds.”

2018 marks the 20th anniversary of children’s theater at PAC, and to celebrate, they are reviving “Tumbleweeds,” their first-ever children’s production. Based on the comic strip created by Tom K. Ryan, “Tumbleweeds” centers around the title character, a cowpoke who returns to his hometown of Grimy Gulch, population 49. After venturing out of the Wild West, Tumbleweeds is determined to improve his town. Unfortunately, this interferes with the nefarious plans of Throckmorton Fleesum, his partner, Clementine Greedy, and Clementine’s not-so-bright cousin, Snake-Eye McFoul, who plan to demolish the town and sell the land for development to the Choo-Choo Railroad Company.

With a cast of zany characters, such as Hildegard Hamhocker, who has everything she wants EXCEPT a man – ANY man, the trio of Undertaker Claude Clay, his Gravedigger, Wart Wimble, and the Hangman, Hogarth Hemp, the Poohawk Indian

tribe, a group of visiting schoolgirls, their teacher, Miss Prudence Lovely, the Grimy Gulch townspeople, and, of course, Tumbleweeds’ faithful horse, Epic, the show has many speaking parts and both singing and non-singing roles.

Rehearsals take place evenings and weekends, approximately two to four rehearsals/week for cast members with speaking roles (every effort is made to work around everyone’s busy schedules), until the last two weeks before the show, when the rehearsal schedule increases. Performances will be April 27-29. David and Shelley Gorenz and Rachel Gorenz-Johnson will co-direct “Tumbleweeds.” David and Shelley are directing “Tumbleweeds” for the third time; Rachel portrayed Hildegard Hamhocker in the 1998 production and helped direct the 2008 10th anniversary show.

Auditions are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, and 9:30 a.m.

so second graders with a strong desire to perform and an ability to follow direction are welcome to audition. Children will be asked to sing “America the Beautiful;” those interested in a speaking role will be provided with a scene selection at the audition.

A parent or guardian is required to accompany their child to the audition unless previous arrangements are made with the director, and should come prepared to list their child’s height, clothing sizes and any schedule conflicts. A parent meeting will be held at the same time as the auditions to organize

volunteers for the production tasks associated with such a large production. It takes many volunteers to produce a show of this magnitude, and all families are expected to help in some way.

LASALLE — Stage 212 in LaSalle is currently seeking submissions from directors for the 2019 season.

The organization is seeking wellknown, highly recognizable shows for the winter, spring, summer and fall slots, but will also entertain proposals for a special “Off-Season” production, typically small cast and a little out of the ordinary, to run in a slot outside of the regular season.

Winter productions are typically small musicals or comedy/dramas, the spring and fall shows are comedy/dramas and the summer production is traditionally a big musical, but other proposals will be considered. The organization will consider all submissions, including repeats of past shows if they have not been performed in the last 20 years.

Peru library will host orphan train program on Feb. 15 PERU — On Thursday, Feb. 15, Carol Chandler will present Orphan Trains of Northern Illinois at the Peru Public Library.

Between 1854 and 1929, more than 250,000 homeless and orphaned children from crowded eastern U.S. cities were transported to new homes all over the country. These orphan trains, the largest child migration program in the United States, had a significant impact on the settlement of the Midwest.

Chandler became aware of orphan trains when she learned

a friend’s grandmother came west on an orphan train. Her research covers northwestern Illinois and adjoining counties in Wisconsin and Iowa.

The program will begin at 6 p.m. and end about 7:30 p.m. The library is located at 1409 11th Street in Peru.

This program is free and all ages are invited. However, registration is requested so sufficient chairs are available to everyone.

$1,000 scholarship created at IVCC to honor memory of Randy Swinford OGLESBY — A scholarship has been created with the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation to honor the memory of former Princeton High School teacher and coach Randy Swinford, who died Oct. 25 at age 64 after battling cancer.

His widow and high school sweetheart, Lani Frandsen Swinford, created the Randy Swinford Legacy Scholarship for students pursuing technical or digital technology careers with a $10,000 endowment.

The $1,000 annual award, to be awarded for the first time in September, will benefit students in technical areas such as automotive, HVAC, industrial maintenance, tool and die making and welding, among others. In addition, students in digital careers such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), computer networking, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and electronics also qualify. Preference will be given to Princeton High School graduates.

“Thanks to the compassion and generosity of Mr. Swinford’s wonderful family, his legacy will endure at IVCC and Princeton High School and in death he will continue to support hard-working and industrious students,” said IVCC President Jerry

Corcoran.

In 1976, Swinford moved to Princeton to teach industrial arts at Princeton High. He was a beloved wrestling and football coach at the school from 1976 until his retirement in 2011, when he was inducted into the IWCOA Coaching Hall of Fame. He served in the Naval Air Reserve.

For 20-plus years, Swinford taught IVCC classes at Princeton High School.

“He would come directly off the (wrestling) mat to teach night class,” said friend and colleague Brian Church. “And he’d be up to drive the school bus early the next morning.”

Lani said throughout his life, Randy worked to help people including the hundreds of “sons” he coached.

The Swinfords have three daughters: Katie (Joel Hanlon), Jillian and Elise, and a grandson, Lucas.

More than 1,000 guests attended his life celebration in rural Princeton.

Rather than a somber affair, Randy insisted in his final wishes that he “buy one more round” for friends and family.

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s 13th annual Edible Car Contest will begin at noon Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the cafeteria.

The contest, which celebrates National Engineering Week, was originally sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Dorene Data, organizer and coordinator of Computer-Aided Design said, “Our purpose is to demonstrate that STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math, can be creative and fun.”

In addition to IVCC students, faculty and staff, area high schools are also invited to compete. Participants work in teams to come up with creative and workable car designs.

In 2016, the contest received its fourth nomination for a prestigious Bellwether Award, a national award recognizing outstanding and innovative community college projects. In 2012, the contest was one of 10 finalists.

Bureau County Genealogical Society will host Abraham Lincoln speaker PRINCETON — When the Bureau County Genealogical Society convenes for its regular meeting on Thursday, Feb. 22, the program will be given by Bill Kemp.

Kemp is the librarian and co-curator from the McLean County History Museum. He has been favorably received here in the recent past speaking on another topic.

This time his program will be “The ‘Lost Speech’ Found.” The public is invited to attend this free program, which will be presented at the BCGS library at 629 S. Main St. in Princeton. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

On May 29, 1856, Lincoln delivered what has become known as the “Lost Speech.” Participants will learn about Lincoln’s role in the founding of the new Republican Party and the significance of the Lost Speech.

Four Seasons Gardening is topic of winter programs First sessions are scheduled for Feb. 27 and March 1 The winter series of University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening program, which focuses on environmental stewardship, home gardening and backyard food production, will get underway this month.

The first session of the series is titled “The Green Pathway to Invasion: Ornamental Invasive Plants.”

The program is offered twice — at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the LaSalle County Extension Office in Ottawa, and again at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, March 1, at the Bureau County Extension Office in Princeton. Both sessions will be presented via computer.

Chris Evans, Forestry Extension and Research Specialist, will present the program. Participants are

invited to join him as he explores why some plants end up becoming invasive, discusses some invaders that are still in the ornamental trade, and gives recommendations on how landowners can influence the surrounding natural landscapes through their planning decisions.

Why do you volunteer: I learned very young it’s better to give. I have something to offer, I enjoy sharing it, and I’m filling a need.

What gaps do you see in your organization that need to be filled: We need more people to join our board and who can be called to fill in where necessary.

What would people be surprised to know about you: I can tell them why seat belts on a school bus are not a good thing.

What are your hobbies: Woodworking, and I just started teaching a Sunday school class.

What activities do you do for the organization(s): Edit and publish the church newsletter. Gold Coat — delivering mail and running errands.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: I feel it is important to give back to the community — being retired on a fixed income, I don’t have a lot of cash to spare, but I do have plenty of time and a few “talents” to offer.

What do you enjoy about your community: Small town atmosphere with many of the conveniences of a

city. Looked at several places before deciding to move here. Princeton had the basics I wanted: access to grocery stores (there were three at the time), health care, basic shopping facilities, entertainment, restaurants, etc.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: I would definitely encourage others, especially retirees like myself, to get involved with volunteering. There are lots of different opportunities out there to suit a variety of interests, whether it is with a church, hospital, library, youth group or whatever. It doesn’t require a great deal of effort or research to find the right position to suit one’s individual talents.

Why do you volunteer: Gold Coating provides me with plenty of exercise, an opportunity to meet people, a chance to socialize with like-minded souls I might not otherwise meet, and it gives me a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

How does volunteering make you feel: How does it make me feel? Tired!

Seriously though, I can’t really say that I’ve ever thought about it. It is like any job, with ups and downs, elations and frustrations, but the positives must outweigh the negatives or I wouldn’t keep on going back!

What gaps do you see in your organization that need to be filled: There always seems to be a shortage of Gold Coats, particularly at this time of year when a number of our regulars are vacationing in Florida, which puts an additional work load on those remaining, and we aren’t getting any younger!

What would people be surprised to know about you: I rather think a number of people will be surprised that I’ve agreed to take part in this in the first place!

What are your hobbies: Reading, knitting, activities with my dogs, cooking.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: I worked concession stands for volleyball games, the food pantry in Lacon, kettle corn in Princeton, breakfast events, and afterschool tutoring in the middle school.

What activities do you do for the organization(s): In the food pantry we put boxes of food together for families who don’t have much.

I went to the middle school and helped them with their homework, and I also popped popcorn for a kettle corn business in Princeton.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: I feel as a teenager we need to see how society works, how the world is outside of high school.

What do you enjoy about your community: It is very quiet and small. I feel like I have so many opportunities.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: I’d tell my peers it’s a good feeling, knowing you’re not getting in trouble, but you’re helping someone and they’re appreciating you. It’s a very good feeling.

How did you get involved with volunteering: My mom has always encouraged me to give back to the community in every way I can. She’s

my motivation.

Why do you volunteer: I do it because it opens my eyes to see how the world is, I love to give back, and I want to be a good role model for my siblings.

How does volunteering make you feel: Giving back is such a great feeling. I learned, and still am learning, that people really do appreciate it when you make an effort to do something good for the community.

What would people be surprised to know about you: I enjoy seeing historical artifacts, I love to learn about history. I’m planning to involve history in my college career.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: Look for a cause you feel is important or a mission perhaps that has touched your life in some fashion.

Look beyond the work or time commitment. Try to see the bigger picture of what your contribution of energy and time will do for you fellow citizens. Start with your church or a civic club like Jaycees or Junior Women’s, or link up with an organization that has a mission you find interesting, like history, for example.

I helped develop a Health Care Needs Survey for Bureau County. We had representatives from every township go to homes and complete the survey to get 98 percent return. The result is the VNA ( Visiting Nurses Association) in Princeton today. It has had various changes since 1976.

What are your hobbies: I like to walk, read, sew, and be with family and grandkids. Children are fun and our future. I like helping and watching them grow. I like gardening and canning foods from the garden. I also like sports, playing cards and traveling.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: Illinois Valley Animal Rescue; I-Read Literacy tutoring through IVCC; driving for Mobile Meals, now coordinated by IVCIL in Peru; and I regularly donate blood at the Red Cross.

What activities do you do for the organization(s): IVAR: I started writing thank-you notes for donations, then added cat building cleaning and care. I like sewing, so I design and sew the seasonal fabric hammocks hanging in our cat pens. I also do both inside and outside maintenance jobs. I’ve also fostered a few dogs and sponsored medical attention for some at-risk cats and helped get them adopted, which is a pleasure for me. I’ve learned I can volunteer and not be compelled to take every needy animal home. It’s not a sad place, it’s a safe and well run way station before adoption and a real home.

How long have you served the organization(s): 10 years.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: Like most of the volunteers at IVAR, I do these things because I enjoy them and they’re important to the animals and the community. The biggest pleasures of retirement are having the time, energy and skills to be useful, productive and knowing each day will see something good accomplished. The three groups I volunteer for provide variety, and that’s a must for me. Problem solving for each keeps things fresh and interesting, too.

What do you enjoy about your community: I love being back home in the area of my childhood. The years in Minnesota were wonderful and full of work and fun, but being back amid my family is terrific.

When there aren’t enough hands to go around or take a break, burnout is a frequent outcome. A shelter can only do what it has the hands and funding to do, so get in there and be a positive help.

If not you, then who? Until you’re active in an organization, you probably don’t understand the constraints and reality.

We’re blessed to have people who respond to our pleas for supplies, water, supplements, bedding and financial help with sudden emergencies and other one-of-a-kind requests.

The real world needs real action, real hands and real problems solved. I’ll bet there’s a local volunteer opportunity for nearly every interest and skill, and if it isn’t exactly what you thought it would be, being stretched and challenged can be good exercise.

How did you get involved with volunteering: My husband died eight years ago, shortly after we built our home and moved to Spring Valley, so my time became my own to plan and fill. After the all-consuming years of owning and operating a business, retirement loomed open and free. I only sit to read; staying busy with activities I love is way more fun.

Why do you volunteer: I have

Volunteering helps others, boosts health There’s something gratifying about volunteering.

We already know about the mental health benefits of volunteering.

Studies have shown that volunteering helps people who donate their time feel more socially connected, thus warding off loneliness and depression. But I was surprised to learn that volunteering has positive implications that go beyond mental health. A growing body of evidence suggests that people who give their time to others might also be rewarded with better physical health — including lower blood pressure and a longer lifespan.

Evidence of volunteerism’s physical effects can be found in a recent study from Carnegie Mellon University, published in Psychology and Aging. Adults over age 50 who volunteered on a regular basis were less likely to develop high blood pressure than non-volunteers. High blood pressure is an important indicator of

health because it contributes to heart disease, stroke and premature death.

It’s impossible for this study to prove that volunteering was directly responsible for the lower blood pressure readings. People who volunteer may be more likely to do other things, like eat a healthy diet or exercise, that lower blood pressure.

But the results are in line with other findings on the topic.

How might volunteering contribute to lower blood pressure?

Performing volunteer work could increase physical activity among people who aren’t otherwise very active, says lead study author Rodlescia Sneed, a doctoral candidate in social and health psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. It may also reduce stress.

“Many people find volunteer work to be helpful with respect to stress reduction, and we know that stress is very strongly linked to health outcomes,” she says.

As with any activity thought to improve health, researchers are trying to identify the specific characteristics of volunteering that provide the greatest benefit.

In the Carnegie Mellon study, 200 hours of volunteering per year correlated to lower blood pressure.

Other studies have found a health benefit from as little as 100 hours of volunteering a year.

Which types of volunteer activities improve health the most? No one really knows.

Sneed speculates that mentally stimulating activities, like tutoring or reading, might be helpful for maintaining memory and thinking skills, while “activities that promote physical activity would be helpful with respect to cardiovascular health, but no studies have really explored this.”

What do you enjoy about your community: I enjoy the small-town feeling and mutual support organizations receive from the Henry community. I was privileged to be able to teach three generations of students during my 36-year teaching career at Henry-Senachwine Grade School.

During those years and since, I’ve received tremendous support. I’ve always found if there’s a need and the community was aware, it’d be filled somehow, some way, by someone. This is a very giving community.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: Evaluate your strengths, talents and interests and find an organization or cause you can be passionate about. Mine include teaching art, working with children and honoring our military, so that’s where I direct my volunteer efforts.

How did you get involved with volunteering: My first efforts began once I had children of my own. I enjoyed helping with the activities and organizations my sons were involved in.

After retiring from teaching in 2010, I had more time to pursue more of my volunteer passions and try some new ones, like working with individuals served by Gateway.

Why do you volunteer: Even at the age of 66, I feel I have a lot more to give and a lot more life left in me. I was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma in 2008 and have been in remission since 2009. I feel truly blessed to be alive and active and intend to keep going and doing as long as I can.

How does volunteering make you feel: I get such a sense of satisfaction from doing something I enjoy that also brings enjoyment to someone else or helps someone who’s perhaps less fortunate.

What would people be surprised to know about you: I’ve painted some demo derby cars, and my favorite TV show is “The Walking Dead.”

What are your hobbies: When I’m not volunteering, I enjoy scrapbooking, flea markets, thrift store shopping, activities with my granddaughter Olivia, watching the Bears, and teaching art part-time at Malden Grade School and Bradford Grade School.

Additional comments: When I retired from teaching, I never imagined I’d be volunteering to teach art to adults with disabilities and that I’d love it so much. It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Even if I’ve had a difficult day when I arrive at Gateway, I leave feeling appreciated and loved by the individuals who attend the day program at the Henry site.
